Several years of rock-burst research conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the mining companies of the Coeur d?Alene Mining District, Idaho, in addition to progress made by others throughout the world, have led to a good understanding of the rock-burst problem. This paper describes conditions which have caused specific bursts, present capabilities of detecting stress buildup and bursts, control methods, and a suggested approach to analyzing any individual mine-burst problem.

An alternative leaching system for rare earth element recovery from monazite is under development. The initial stage utilises oxalic acid to convert the rare earth phosphate into an oxalate salt through dissolution and reprecipitation and it is the efficiency of this stage that governs the overall recovery achieved. It has previously been proposed that lixiviant consumption is the primary limitation in this process. This work further investigates a range of conditions in an attempt to further elucidate the factors influencing the achievable conversion in this stage. It has been shown that the pH may be governed by multiple reactions both consuming and producing acid (thus the mild change over time). The importance of proper mixing and potential to operate at lower temperature with only moderate impact on kinetics has also been demonstrated. Staged/sequential leaching is more effective in fresh solution as opposed to restoring the lixiviant concentration with subsequent reagent addition, suggesting some impact of solution composition. However, contrary to previous findings, subjecting the leach residue to fresh solution resulted in significant decline in leach rate and overall dissolution. This may be because a greater proportion of conversion was achieved in stage 1 in this work than in previous investigation. This may indicate that eventual passivation or the presence of some more refractory REE minerals limits dissolution. Iron dissolution was relatively consistent upon exposure to fresh solution, displaying the ability of the solution to continue to leach the goethite component of the concentrate.

TRANSFER to the Bureau of Mines of the responsibility for conservation and production of helium, and announcement that a proposal has been made to the President for commercial operation of the Los Angeles has attracted new attention to the helium program of the Government. The matter is one in which mining engineers, and the mining industry in general, have a peculiar interest. Helium is a byproduct of the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is found in certain of the natural gases which have themselves been discovered, in the main, in the search for oil. If it is to be produced on a large scale, the conservation and development of the fields will necessarily be done by the men of the oil and gas industry. There is no known or expected source of supply of quantities of commercial importance save in the natural gas fields. Not all gas wells supply helium and none of them supply it in important percentages. If it were necessary to prospect a field, develop it, lay pipe lines and build production plants for the helium alone, the cost would be prohibitive. On that basis helium would necessarily be restricted to essential war uses, where cost is subordinate to need. As a byproduct of the natural gas in certain, at least, of the fields in the United States there is distinct reason for anticipating that it may be produced in amounts and at a cost that will permit its regular use in commercial airships.

The ultrafast load cell (UFLC) has proved to be an exceptionally good device for the study of the fundamental processes associated with the impact fracture of particulate material. A new high- sensitivity UFLC has been commissioned at the Utah Comminution Center for the study of low-impact energy single-particle fracture. The force-time histories of individual fracture events have been measured. The force and energy absorbed at crack initiation have been measured at several particle sizes. The mass specific energy for fracture and the associated breakage function have been determined. The distributions of particle breakage energy and particle strength have been measured as a function of particle size.

The philosophical context of many activities in mine geology can be an important lever in adding value to operations. For mine geologists (including resource and grade control geologists) we argue that the tasks of problem formulation, observation and data collection, interpretation and modelling invoke various philosophical considerations whether the practitioner is aware of them or not.Constructing testable models to explain reality is the definitive aspect of any activity claiming to be ‘scientific’. A primary goal of mining geology is to build models that accurately predict reality to an acceptable degree and these include litho-structural, stratigraphic, grade control, resource or reconciliation models. What’s more, in mine geology we are often able collect additional drill samples or access new underground openings, for example, that can provide relatively rapid feedback on how predictive, and therefore useful, our models are. In this paper, we describe the key philosophical frameworks proposed for conducting scientific investigations, including falsification, the method of multiple working hypotheses and structural concepts of scientific theory. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are discussed and an attempt is made to relate them to activities undertaken by mine geologists. Common perceptions of what constitutes the scientific method have been dominated by how scientists do experimental physics and chemistry in particular. There are very important differences in the types of problem confronted in these experimental sciences compared to the ‘historical sciences’, such as geology, where the processes studied are unique and only evidential traces of past events are available. The philosophical implications of attempting to validate numerical geological models, such as resource estimates are also briefly considered.Some practical conclusions are drawn about how mine geology activities can be better implemented if practitioners are cognisant of the importance of philosophical considerations when attempting to gain new knowledge through a scientific investigation. We believe that the implications for creating additional value to a project or operation can be very significant when geology is applied by a practitioner with an understanding of the philosophical basis of the activities we think of as constituting a scientific investigation.Remember that all models are wrong; the practical question is how wrong do they have to be to not be useful? (Box and Draper, 1987, 74 p).The demand that theories be highly falsifiable has the attractive consequence that theories should be clearly stated and precise. If a theory is so vaguely stated that it is not exactly clear what it is claiming, then when tested by observation or experiment it can always be interpreted so as to be consistent with the results of the test. "Abstract-Grass roots exploration has an emphasis on good precision at low (sub-economic) concentrations of an element, in order to identify "anomalies" which may lead to drilling targets. Although it is wise to have well-defined quality controls in place during early stage sampling, the control procedures at this stage tend to be rudimentary. When a deposit warrants detailed delineation, the need for accurate geological characterization and assaying of ore-grade rock must be supported by appropriate quality control procedures.As a project returns more promising results, and the likelihood of the project warranting a prefeasibility study increases, it is time to tighten quality assurance requirements and quality control protocols. Delays in instituting adequate quality control and verification procedures may lead to costly remedial actions that can also delay completion of the prefeasibility or feasibility study. Sometimes, as a project matures, the quality control and quality assurance aspects fail to keep pace with the changing nature of the work: an increasing emphasis on precise and accurate assaying of oregrade rock.A resource model is like a house of cards. The foundation of the house is the geological observations, the sampling methods and the geological interpretations performed upon those samples. Upon the sampling, which includes all the sub-sampling steps of sample preparation, rest the assay results. The quality of the assays can be no better than the quality of the sampling. Good assaying technique will preserve all biases and imprecisions introduced during sampling and sample preparation; it cannot remove them. If the sub-samples and/or assays are bad and must be redone, all the succeeding levels of the house of cards must also be rebuilt, or at least patched up.From geological observations, a geological interpretation is built, the quality of which is critical to the construction of an acceptable resource model. Geological elements are difficult to assess, and are not discussed here; they are dependent upon the expertise of the geologists involved. Geological knowledge contributes essential quality control elements to resource/reserve determinations (Sinclair and Postolski, 1999; Postolski and Sinclair, 1999).This paper consists of five sections: (1) overview of quality control protocols, (2) maintaining quality control of databases, (3) quality control of drill sampling, (4) optimizing crushing and grinding requirements, and (5) quality control of assay data acquisition."

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. "Booster fans are relatively rare in Australian coal mines. However, as mines become progressivelydeeper it is likely that such fans will be increasingly adopted as a method to sustain or improve the ventilation of underground workings. The reasons why booster fans may be an att ractive alternative include: increased cost of sinking additional ventilation shafts with greater seam depths; environmental objections to shaft sinking projects; and increasing urbanisation and surface constraints limiting availability of potential ventilation shaft sites. As Tahmoor Colliery movedinto its northern lease the ventilation constraints became the limiting factor on production. Thelimitations of the old workings meant that the existing ventilation system would be inadequateto sustain the required production. Extensive ventilation modelling was carried out to evaluatevarious potential solutions and the recommended option was the installation of a booster fanor fans, to gain underground access to an already approved shaft site in the northern lease.Proposals were sought from recognised fan manufacturers and various alternative arrangements were tendered. Ultimately the choice was between one large centrifugal fan and a set (three or four) of smaller æauxiliary-likeÆ fans in parallel. The successful tender was for a single centrifugal, an arrangement very similar to the booster fans that have been operating eff ectively at Westcliff Colliery for a number of years. This paper describes the current ventilation network, evaluation of the ventilation options, the fan selection process, and the project status to date."

Mining-induced microseismicity data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in a hard-rock mine were analyzed for spatial and temporal patterns that might prove useful for prediction of rock bursts or assessment of rock mass damage changes. Pattern attributes described and illustrated in the previous report (part 1) were applied to the study of aftershock sequences associated with two different stopes. The aftershock sequences were spatially and temporally fractal, and the fractality was maintained for up to 16 h following a sequence progenitor. This suggests mechanical interdependency among the after-shocks. No statistical difference was found in the distributions of fractal dimensions when comparing two different stopes or when comparing aftershock sequences initiated by blasts or bumps. This suggests a lack of sensitivity to both stress perturbation mechanism and local damage states. However, differences between the two stopes were found in other sequence attributes that support inferred differences in the magnitude of stress concentrations and damage near each stope, and over time as a stope is developed.

"Metro Line 5 in Sao Paulo is being constructed. This lot extends for 4,940 m with twin EPB shield tunnels under a dense and busy urban area, with an excavation diameter of 6.9 m. The tunnels run predominantly in the tertiary soils of Sao Paulo where extensive experience exists from previous EPB shield tunnel projects. However, new experience is being gained in Sao Paulo in shield tunnelling through Saprolite, the weathered product of the underlying Gneiss crystalline basement, through the resulting residual soils and in rock-soil mixed face conditions. Furthermore, experiences in difficult mixed face soil conditions with overconsolidated clay at the face in combination with loose sands at the crown under the groundwater table will be presented. Additionally, the design, operational and controlling approach followed for the shield drive at particular critical cross-sections where the shields were driven close or under buildings. INTRODUCTION Within the framework of Sao Paulo´s metro network expansion, the excavation of the shield tunnels for Metro Sao Paulo Line 5 is currently taking place. The present paper deals with the description of the most relevant features from the construction of the Line 5 – Lot 3 tunnels. The paper presents how particular challenges were dealt maximising potential of EPB shield tunnelling technology. Challenges were posed not only by the difficult boundary conditions of urban shield tunnelling, such as shield drive under buildings, but also by complex geotechnical situations. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The great urban area of São Paulo is one of the biggest cities in the world, with around 20 Million people living in the city and in the suburb area. The city faces great mobility problems and in the last years the government has been investing great amounts on the megacity´s metro expansion. The Line 5 Extension plays an important role to connect the south area to the central area of the city, with a whole extension of 11 kilometres, including 11 new stations. It is estimated that this line will transport almost 900.000 passengers/day. The first stretch of the expansion, Lot 3, consists of two single tunnels, almost 5 kilometres long each, crossing 4 stations. Figure 1 shows details of the Line 5 Expansion."

Currently, spent V2O5–WO3/TiO2 catalysts contribute significant amounts of solid waste following increasing levels of global demand. V2O5–WO3/ TiO2 catalysts usually consist of TiO2 anatase as a supporting oxide, vanadium as a catalytic agent, and other promoters such as tungsten, silicon, and calcium. Although vanadium is the main catalytic agent, a relatively high content of tungsten (WO3, 7–10 wt%) typically exists compared to vanadium (0.5–1.5 wt%). Considering the irreplaceable properties and industrial importance of tungsten, a feasible method for the recycling of spent V2O5–WO3/TiO2 catalyst should be established to utilize it as a secondary source. This paper presents a process to recover tungsten from spent V2O5–WO3/TiO2 catalyst. The processes proposed here involving roasting, decomposition using HCl, ammonia leaching, and crystallization. Within the process, ammonium paratungstate (71 wt% as WO3) is obtained as a final product. The total yield rate of tungsten from feedstock was found to be 96.3%.

Introduction Loading and hauling systems are evaluated in open pit mining for new properties, expanding existing operations, changing systems or equipment, and equipment replacement analysis. The objective of such evaluations is to determine the equipment needed to handle planned tonnages at the lowest cash flow cost. Cash flow costs are used to combine capital outlays with operating and maintenance costs. Leasing costs could be substituted for capital costs with appropriate modifications to calculation procedures. These modifications will not be covered. This chapter will describe methods of evaluating loading and hauling systems, concentrating on some of the more often raised questions concerning quantitative data. While the methods described are not the only ones in current use, they have a record of proven reliability. The shovel and haulage truck system is used In the examples because of its common use in open pit mines. In medium to large open pit mines, electric shovels and diesel-electric drive haulage trucks are normally used. The basic ideas presented in this chapter apply to all loading and hauling systems, with appropriate modifications. The process of performing a shovel and haulage truck evaluation can be time-consuming and tedious because of the quantity of data involved, but it is not particularly difficult. The examples used to Illustrate shovel and haulage truck evaluation are based on a hypothetical open pit mine operating 350 days per year producing 31 750- 000 t (35,000,000 st, 100,000 stpd) annually, of which 11 110 000 t ( 12,250,000 st, 35,000 stpd) are ore. Selection of the optimum shovel and haulage truck fleets will be shown. The principal sources of data for the examples or any other equipment evaluation are equipment manufacturers and actual operations. Whenever possible, actual operating experience should be used to verify estimates. The quantitative data presented herein are unrelated to a specific existing mining operation.

"INTRODCICTIONSilicosis is the chronic fibrosing disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica. However, inhalation of crystalline silica, may induce three distinctly different disease patterns; i.e., chrome silicosis, accelerated silicosis, and acute silicosis. These three disease patterns differ in their pathologic characteristics, clinical symptoms, onset of disease, and mortality. Many studies in the past have focused on the elucidation of mechanisms involved in the development of chrome silicosis. We recently reported that freshly fractured silica has surface properties that could make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity of freshly fractured silica may be involved in the pathogenesis of acute silicosis (Dalal et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988; Shi et II., 1988). Because freshly fractured silica could contain some moieties in an ""excited state,"" due to the breakage of silicon oxygen bonds, we postulated that the de-excitation of these moieties could produce light which could be monitored by a luminescence measurement technique. In addition, if this ""excited state'' of silica could trigger a greater biologic response by phagocytic cells, this activation could be monitored by a chemiluminescence technique in the presence of appropriate enhancers.This investigation describes for the first time the use of luminescence in the study of freshly fractured silica and its properties. Enhanced biologic reactivity of the freshly fractured silica with alveolar macrophages was monitored by the chemiluminescence technique.MATERIALS AND METHODSNative silica was obtained from the dust bank of the GenericRespirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA, and ground for 3~ min in an agate ball mill. It was then sieved through a 20 micron mesh filter and used within 1 O min as fresh silica or stored in glass bottles for aging. X-ray energy spectrometry and X-ray powder diffraction studies on representative samples were made to confirm the mineralogic purity. All the silica samples were found to be 99 % pure with minimal detectable conlamination by metal ions."

Molten salt reactor (MSR) is a promising advanced reactor system aiming to the transmutation of minor actinides such as americium in order to reduce the inventory of ultimate nuclear waste. The fuel is a molten salt in which actinides are homogeneously dissolved in the liquid phase. A chloride salt may be retained for this concept, as it provides low melting point, high solubility of actinides, harder neutron spectrum. To avoid corrosion and precipitation issues, molten salt composition has to be carefully controlled with impurity content as low as possible. Obtaining pure actinide chlorides without contaminants such as oxide, oxychloride, hydroxide and water is still a challenge. To prepare actinide-bearing salt, the chlorination of actinides oxides was investigated in an unstirred reactor under flowing gas as solid-gas reaction. The carbochlorination of PuO2 were performed in the temperature range of 600 to 800°C with chlorine gas as a chlorinating agent and the presence of solid carbon. PuCl3 was successfully synthesised by this method and characterised by X-ray diffraction measurements but some impurities such as oxide phase remain inside the formed product. Refinements of anhydrous and hydrated PuCl3 phases by Le Bail method were also performed for crystalline materials definition. Conversion mainly depends on the chlorinating temperature and the contact between the oxide and the chlorinating agent. A conversion value of 70–80 per cent was achieved at 700°C from PuO2 with quite high specific surface area. The conversion rate was not improved with increasing the chlorination time. The volatilisation of Pu was observed during the carbochlorination experiments. To avoid a loss of Pu caused by sublimation, the chlorination temperature should be limited to 650°C despite that the conversion of PuO2 to PuCl3 was enhanced by increasing temperature. Both carbochlorination and hydrochlorination of AmO2 were also carried out leading to the formation of AmCl3. These first results suggest that americium oxide was chlorinated more readily than plutonium oxide. The purity of produced PuCl3 and AmCl3 still deserves further investigations.

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

"TBM cutter life evaluation in abrasive granitic rocks is a very important issue, especially in pressurized face tunneling with mixshield TBM for which the planning of costly interventions becomes crucial. This paper presents an overview of methodologies for cutter life evaluation in rock. A comparative study is performed to indicate the predictability of cutter life evaluation methods based on detail data from the NS3 tunnel project in Singapore. A new model is developed based upon the cutter wear information of eight TBM tunnels from around the world. New methods are proposed to evaluate the optimum intervention interval length and the number of worn-out disc cutters for a tunnel project. Finally, two new laboratory tests in the evaluation of disc cutter abrasion, including a full-scale and a small-scale test, are introduced, and their test results are discussed. INTRODUCTION The issue of wear evaluation for hard rocks has been extensively studied in drilling and pavement industry. In this regard, several tests and evaluation methods have been proposed to estimate or evaluate the state of tool life (e.g. bit life for drilling). In the case of TBM tunneling, tool wear may depend on several factors such as mineral composition, strength, or type of cutting, but as the abrasion is usually the major mechanism for the tool wear in hard rock, the developed methods for cutter wear or cutter life evaluation are mostly based on the abrasion indices such as Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI). This paper attempts to review the major methodologies for disc cutter wear and life evaluation and to propose new methods to evaluate cutter life and intervention interval evaluation based on detail information of a mixshield tunnel project in Singapore as well as general information of some other projects from Iran, Italy, South Africa, and France. As the laboratory tests are crucial in the process of evaluation, two new lab tests are developed and used to inspect suitability of the new proposed model for disc cutter wear evaluation."

THE production of isotropic fine-grained ingot iron would be most useful since physical measurements associated with the elastic properties of iron are influenced by the size and orientation of the individual grains. This can be accomplished at present for small samples by established metallurgical procedures, but for large samples (in excess of 2 in. diam by 1 in. thick) it is virtually impossible to produce reasonably small uniform grains with random orientation. Such pieces can, however, be produced by impulsive loading followed by a suitable recrystallization treatment. The shock loading system employed is diagrammed in Fig. l. Here the 3/8-in. iron plate is accelerated by the plane-wave initiated high explosive charge through a 1 5/8-in. air space. Collision of this plate and the specimen of interest generates a shock wave in excess of 300 kbars which passes through the specimen. For this type of work it is not necessary to use machined parts: for example, the ingot iron pieces are saw cut from the billet so that they can be inserted in short sections of iron pipe. The recovered specimens are less distorted, however, if the air gap between the iron sample and pipe is filled with Woods metal. The dimensional changes resulting from this type of loading technique are minor, usually less than a 10 pct reduction in thickness. Compressive yield

On the basis of nonequilibrium zeta potential measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established. The results are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory. This recent electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble-salt flotation systems suggests that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation results confirm this surface-charge/collector-colloid adsorption model and are presented herein.

"Repairing and replacing the nation’s aging and crumbling infrastructure has become a major issue with the American public. It is no secret that the upkeep of roads, tunnels, bridges, and water and waste water facilities has been neglected for decades. Cities, states and towns across the United States are now grappling with these issues, ones that will take decades and billions of dollars to fix.Because of this infrastructure issue, the North American tunneling industry is flourishing. Cities across the country are looking to go underground to alleviate traffic issues, transporting water and waste water to more people in more efficient ways.In October, the seventh annual Cutting Edge conference was held in Atlanta, GA. Put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Britain’s Tunnelling Journal, about 175 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world attended. Attendees included owners, designers and contractors. An accompanying exhibit included 28 companies.The theme of the two-day conference was Advances in Tunneling Technology. Speakers examined the latest advances in tunneling technology, its methodology and how these advances can be harnessed to assist upcoming major tunneling projects. The conference featured a tailored, high-end, single-track program of subject-specific presentations that focused on innovation and practical experience. Two in-depth panel discussions at the end of each day were also included.Patricia Mulroy was a keynote speaker on Monday. She is senior fellow for climate adaptation and environmental policy at The Brookings Institution. Like many others, Mulroy believes the U.S. infrastructure in in a state of disrepair. But, she said, no one wants to talk about it. “We need to have a conversation about infrastructure. We cannot be afraid to talk about building it and the cost.” For this to happen, though, the nation needs leadership."

An hcp phase may be induced by cold working the ß&apos; phase of the Ag-Zn system. This phase reverts to ß&apos; on subsequent aging. No phase change occurs on cold working the o phase, but ß&apos; is formed when the deformed alloy is subsequently aged at room temperature. It is concluded that for alloys near 50 at pct Zn the ordered bcc ß&apos; phase is the equilibrium structure at room temperature. WhEN the disordered bcc ß phase of the Ag-Zn system is cooled to temperatures below 258o to 274oC, it transforms to a complex hexagonal phase <o.1,2 The nature of the o ß=o transformation has been the subject of some discussion,2&apos;3 and the structure of o has been described in detail.&apos; The latter phase appears to be stable on aging at room temperature but decomposes following cold work. When alloys containing approximately 50 at. pct Zn are rapidly quenched from the 0 phase field, the ß ? o transformation may be suppressed; but the ß phase undergoes an ordering reaction (ß ? ß&apos;). The ß&apos; structure may also be obtained as a result of cold working and aging at room temperature.4 Kitchingman, Hall, and Buckley4 have suggested that the decomposition of (o following cold work proceeds in two stages, (o ? ß followed by ß ? ß&apos;, but did not confirm this by experiment. When the ordered &apos; phases in the systems Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 are cold worked, they become unstable and transform to a close-packed hexagonal phase (( ) indicating that when order is destroyed in a ß&apos; structure the close-packed hexagonal phase may in many cases be more stable. It thus became of interest to study more closely the effect of cold work and annealing on the stability of both the ß&apos; and o phases in a Ag-50 at. pct Zn alloy. Predetermined weights of spectroscopically-pure Ag and Zn, supplied by Johnson and Matthey, were melted and cast under 1/2 atm of He in transparent vycor tubing. The ingot was homogenized for 1 week at 630°C and quenched into iced brine. Since mechanical polishing was found to induce a phase change, sections were first polished at room temperature, sealed in tubes under 1/2 atm of He, reannealed for several days at 630o or 200°C and then quenched into iced brine. Sections of the alloy thus prepared were found to be homogeneous when examined under the microscope. The sample quenched from 630°C (ß -phase region) was pink in color, whereas the sample quenched from 200°C (o-phase region) was silver. The latter sample showed the characteristic hexagonal anisotropy when examined under polarized light. Filings of the alloy were examined at room temperature, after various heat treatments, using an RCA-Siemens Crystalloflex IV diffractometer with filtered CuKa radiation. The X-ray reflections from flat powder specimens quenched from 630o and 200°C and sieved through 230 mesh were recorded graphically at a scanning speed of 1/2 deg per min. The resultant patterns are shown in Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) and may be identified as those of the 8&apos; and <02 structures respectively. The lattice parameter of the ß&apos; phase was determined as 3.1566Å.* This value compares very well withthatto be expected for a 50 at. pct Zn alloy from the data of Owen and Edmunds? and indicates that no loss of Zn occurred during casting. In order to study the effect of cold work upon the ß&apos; and o phases, filings made at room temperature and sieved through 230 mesh were mounted immediately in the diffractometer-i.e., without a strain-relief anneal. Changes in structure on subsequent aging were followed by scanning repeatedly over the regions of the low index reflections of the ß&apos; and o structures-i.e. , 28 from 35 to 44 deg. Immediately after filing the 8&apos; specimen, additional diffraction peaks were observed in the low-index region of the pattern, as shown in Fig. 1(c). These additional peaks do not coincide with those of the o structure, Fig. l(b), but may be indexed as the (10.0), (00.2), and (10.1) reflections of an hcp phase (<) with nearly ideal axial ratio. However, this hexagonal phase appears to be very unstable since within a very short time at room temperature it reverts back to the ordered ß&apos; phase, the reversion being complete within seven hours. The 5 ? ß&apos; reversion reaction is, therefore, very similar to those already reported in Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 7&apos;alloys. The action of filing caused the deformed surface of the originally pink ingot to become silver in color, indi-cating that the ( phase possesses similar reflecting properties to the o phase.
