Cadmium telluride (CdTe) semiconductor has been well investigated as a CdS/CdTe heterojunction solar cell material since its band gap is suitable for energy conversion from sunlight into electricity. In this paper a new electrochemical processing of thin-layered CdTe using basic aqueous electrolytes is reviewed from the standpoint of thermodynamics using a potential-pH diagram. The cathodic electrodeposition of the stoichiometric CdTe with a flat surface morphology took place at more positive potentials than that of the Nernst potential for the bulk-Cd deposition and at more negative potentials than that for the hulk-To. In this potential region deviation from the stoichiometric composition of eleetrodeposited CdTe was controllable by the Cd(II)/Te(IV) concentration ratio, pH, or concentration of complexing agent for Cd2+ ions of the electrolytes, The deposition behaviors for ammoniacal media were well accounted for by the potential-pH diagram of the Cd-Te-NH3-H2O system devised by a combination of those of the Cd-NH3-H20 and the Te-H2O systems, Diagrams for other complexing agents, ethylenediamine and diethylenetriamine, were also constructed to investigate and discuss the electrodeposition conditions regarding the corresponding media.

Metallurgists operating Knelson Concentrators (KC) often rely on manufacturerÆs recommendations for selecting operating parameters, such as fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. Recent studies have shown that these parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics, such as size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. It is known that a particle entering a KC initially traverses a circular path within the bowl. For a particle to maintain a given orbit, the required centripetal force must be supplied by external means. It has been argued that this centripetal force, which is dependent on the mass of the particle, its radial position and the rotational speed of the bowl, is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the BagnoldÆs force created by the particle/particle collisions. Depending on the fluidising water flow rate, one of two situations can occur where the porosity of the bed increases or decreases, which influences the amount of material retained within the bowl. The amount of material of a given size and density retained in the bowl is thus dependent on the extent of the centripetal force provided. Based on the above concept, a criterion that can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It may also be construed that this criterion demarcates the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state. By identifying the transition values for the different constituent mineral particles in the feed, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. In addition, the kinetics of gangue displacement by incoming heavy mineral particles were also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build-up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum. A model has been proposed to predict the optimal batch cycle time for a KC in terms of the feed characteristics and machine operating parameters.

The current study investigates the effect of microwave processing on low-grade banded iron ore using charcoal, coking coal, and non-coking coal. Charcoal showed better microwave heating response at low temperatures, and the coals exhibit better heating response at higher temperatures. Low carbon dosage ~ 12% is sufficient to generate concentrate with 61.8% iron grade and ~6% for 94.8% iron recovery comprising of magnetite phase suitable for iron-making applications. The process separation efficiency of ~ 95% is achieved at 6% carbon dosage and decreases with an increase in carbon due to formation of the fayalite phase. The metallization degree showed a strong dependency on reductant dosage and achieved amaximumvalue of 22.7%at 18%charcoal. The comparison of ore with pure iron oxide and the synthetic mixture of iron oxide indicated that the underlying bonding due to banded structure enhances the Joule heating during microwave irradiation and thereby aids in attaining higher temperature and better separation.

Among the iron-bearing ores of the world, the titaniferous iron sands of New Zealand are probably the least known to American engineers. This is not surprising in view of the fact that American ironmasters look with disfavor on any, even domestic, ores containing over 1 per cent. titanium. The possibilities of smelting titanium-bearing ores in the blast furnace are still undetermined, but the problem of their efficient reduction is becoming more important each year. There seems to be little inclination on the part of American furnace operators to tackle this problem, and they will no doubt continue to utilize the non-titanium ores at their command, leaving research and experiment to those countries not so fortunately endowed. New Zealand has, however, been intensely interested in her deposits of titanium-bearing iron sand, and during the last 50 years considerable English and New Zealand capital has been expended on this problem. The extent of the New Zealand iron-sand deposits is almost beyond measure. From Patea north to Manuka Heads, along almost the entire west coast of the North Island, these deposits exist. Wherever there is beach sand along this 300 mi. of coast line, the sand is iron bearing. It varies considerably in grade; but wherever the contour of the coast affords small bays and inlets, large dunes are found that are remarkably uniform in quality. Several of these large deposits, especially those at New Plymouth and Patea, are noted for their high iron content. The dune at New Plymouth runs between 55 and 60 per cent. of metallic iron; the panning action of the prevailing westerly winds and northwesterly currents has no doubt resulted in this concentration. Whatever the origin of this material may be, there is no doubt that deposition is going on continuously. At New Plymouth, a small artificial harbor, protected from the drifting sand by a large breakwall, has been dredged. Here sailing vessels have for years been loaded with iron sand for ballast by means of a crane and grab bucket operated from the wall of the breakwater. Thousands of tons of sand have been removed from this spot yet each succeeding storm renews the supply. The sand dune shown in Fig. 1 has been tested to a depth of 50 ft. (15 m.) without losing its

Zwolle oil field of Sabine Parish, La., is different from most oil producing areas of the State in that the oil is obtained from marl and chalk-rock formations. The thickness of the reservoir rocks averages 500 feet; but production is not continuous throughout this thickness, as the oil apparently is localized in vertical and nearly vertical solution cavities and channelways or in porous zones of limited horizontal extent. The nature of the oil accumulation has caused two outstanding peculiarities of the field: (1) About 60 percent of the tests drilled were dry holes and (2) there were many instances of well interference. Commercial production was discovered in November 1928, after 17 years of prospecting in and around the present limits of the area now developed which has a length of about 22 miles and a maximum width of 4 miles. The field had produced 10,266,896 barrels of oil to January 1, 1934. The oil ranges in gravity from 400 to 420 A.P.I. Although the field is divided into several districts which are more or less clearly defined and separated by unproved territory the term Zwolle field", as used in this report, includes the entire area from Blue Lake on the west side, through Zwolle proper, and eastward, including the Many or Eastern extension.

The importance of the processing of secondary resources such as solid industrial wastes and liquid effluents as well as byroducts for the recovery of the associated metal values hardly needs any elaboration. Such processing contributes in no small measure.towards the augmentation of the availability and the supply position of resources. As an added benefit, it leads to a reduction in environmental pollution caused by the undesirable waste materials. As some typical examples of secondary resources in the Indian scenario, mention' can be made of spent catalysts, metal/alloy scrap, ash, consumed batteries, flue dust, slag, sludge and slime, pickling solutions, spent acids; plating rinse solutions, spent etchants, waste water from synthetic fibre manufacture and from tanneries etc. These wastes constitute a source of a variety of non ferrous metals. In the processing of secondary resources like these, the techniques of hydrometallurgy such as solvent extraction play a pivotal role. This paper outlines the efforts made to use solvent extraction to recover(1) base metals. such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt from a number of secondary resources like cake, and sludge(2) refractory metals like molybdenum and vanadium from sulphidic byproducts and spent catalyst and (3:) nuclear metal like uranium from phosphoric acid. In the case of base metals, process flowsheet involving the use of acidic extractants such as DEHPA and PC88A have been optimised. The problem of iron removal from the leach liquor, "which influences the metal recovery process significantly, has drawn a special emphasis. hi the case of refractory metals, basic extractants .like Alamine 336 has been pressed into service to produce kilogramme. quantities of pure salts of molybdenum and vanadium, Finally, the paper gives a brief account of plant experience in recovering uranium from phosphoric acid, using 'a solvent system comosed of DEHPA and TOPO.

The present study has been conducted in surface limestone mine to select the controllable blasting design parameters affecting the peak particle velocity (PPV) for assessment of ground vibration. The study aims at using two prominent statistical tools, namely, principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise selection and elimination (SSE) techniques for identifying the key controllable parameters affecting the PPV. For determining the correlation coefficient between blasting design parameters and PPV from 44 field scale trial blasts, multi-variate linear regression (MLR) technique was done. It was found that the PCA and SSE eliminated a huge number of controllable parameters to identify the most important parameters, affecting the PPV. The PCA eliminated 6 number of parameters while SSE eliminated 5 number of parameters, and the coefficients of determination (R2) obtained were 0.616 and 0.584 for PCA and SSE respectively. The predictor equations were evolved, and these equations were used to validate the PPV results for another set of 21 field scale trial blasts. The predictor equations have been found to be fairly accurate in predicting the PPV values. Further, the PCA technique provides very near prediction of PPV with high degree of correlation in comparison to SSE technique. The paper highlights the role of state-of-art statistical tools in selecting the blasting design parameters affecting the PPV in field-scale blasting.

The paper outlines the adoption and evolution of ‘sustainable development’ as a concept in tailings management practices in the mining industry over the last 30 years. Over 500 lives have been lost in tailings facility accidents since World War 2. The paper outlines commonalities in many of these accidents, particularly the role of excess water. It considers the role effective tailings management can play in enhancing the social acceptability of mining in the future.Tailings management is a major operating cost at many mines while the cost of successfully closing tailings facilities is also very high. Current tailings management practices in the industry are outlined. The technical and engineering challenges of reducing potential risks associated with tailings by reducing water entrainment are described. The successful development of practical techniques to better manage tailings and reduce water consumption and wastage are described. For example, water removal in the alumina industry to produce a paste for dry stacking is now a reality.The future adoption of these new risk reducing techniques by the industry is discussed and the implications of the adoption or non-adoption of these techniques on the industry’s future ‘social licence’ is considered.

Kaiser Steel Corporation's Eagle Mountain Mine is located in the Colorado Desert, 60 miles east of Indio, California. Concentrates from the mine are shipped by rail 164 miles to the company's steel mill at Fontana, and also to Longbeach, California for export. Temperatures are typical of the lower desert ranging from a high of 120 degrees in the summer to a low of 25 degrees in the winter. The average annual rainfall of about two inches comes mainly as cloud bursts during the summer months. From its inception, the Eagle Mountain Mine has had the problem of breaking its mine rock. Practices followed from 1949 until 1962 were very costly, did not produce uniformly good fragmentation, and were incapable of sustaining high production. During this period, every conventional type of explosive then in use was tried and found to be unsatisfactory for one reason or another. The first slurry test work at Eagle Mountain was started in 195E and finally by 1962, after having tried all the slurry mixtures then available including some "home made" formulas, a metallized slurry was perfected at the mine which overcame all of the disadvantages of former blasting methods.

Heat content and entropy data at high temperatures were obtained for cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and cupric oxide (CuO). Experimental results and smooth values are reported. Equations are given for heat content increments and heat capacities above 2980 K. Low-temperature heat capacity data were obtained for cuprous oxide. Evaluation of the 2980 K entropy gave, S°298.15(Cu2O) = 22.08 ± 0.10 cal/deg mole. Heat of formation values were determined for cuprous and cupric oxides. The values are: AH°298.15(Cu2O) = -40,830 ± 300 cal/mole, and AH°298.15(CuO) = -37,230 ± 150 cal/mole.

As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and obtained samples of ore from two properties in the vicinity of Bettie Mountain, Lander County, Nev. In addition, samples from three claims in the Carico Lake region, Lander County, Nev., were submitted by private interests. RS the ores were too low in grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore dressing was investigated. The Black Bock property is 16 miles south of Valmy, Nev., and is owned by Western Alloys, Inc., Salt Lake City, Utah. The deposit is a replacement of sedimentary rock by manganese oxides. Ore occurs in two main ore bodies designated as the "upper bench" and "lower bench", which could be mined separately. Examining engineers obtained samples from each ore body, and laboratory experiments were made on each sample. The Black Eagle group of claims is in Lander County, Nov., about 43 miles southwest of Battle Mountain. Ore occurs as a replacement of manganese oxides in shale and chert. The 2-ton sample of ore used for laboratory testing was taken by a Bureau of Mines examining engineer from an adit that partly transversed a 28-foot bed of ore. The property is controlled by Western Alloys, Inc.

The German Ruhrgebiet is slowly transitioning into a post-mining state. It has been subjected to industrial-grade hard coal mining operations for more than 150 years. Due to a political decision, German hard coal mining will come to an end in 2018. By then the surface will have subsided up to 20 meters. After all mining activities in the area have ended, there will be no need to maintain the current mine water level. Accordingly, the company operating the last remaining coal mines has decided to let the water level rise to an as yet undetermined level. Alongside other issues that may be caused by rising groundwater levels, the protection of the area?s drinking water supply is of utmost importance. This notion is also represented by European and German law. The primary intent of the applicable laws is to protect the health of the citizenship. This means protecting ground water that may be used by humans from being contaminated by the mine water. This paper outlines the consequences of European and German legislature on mining aftercare using the example of one of Europe?s largest agglomerations.

"Dithiophosphate (DTP) collectors have the lowest affinity for sulfide mineral surfaces compared to other common sulfide mineral collectors, such as xanthates and dithiocarbamates. In some cases it has been found that DTP does not adsorb onto the mineral surface at all and yet increases in recoveries and grades are noticed with the addition of DTP. Many studies have investigated the interactive effects of collector mixtures. However, there have been relatively few studies on the interactive effects between frother molecules and collectors. This study investigates the interactions between different types of frothers and sodium diethyl dithiophosphate.The study found that there were large increases in pyrite and galena microflotation recoveries at both pH4 and pH9 when DTP was mixed with small amounts of frother at a constant bubble size, showing that these increases were neither mineral-specific nor pH-specific. The same effect was not present when xanthate was used as a collector. The increases in recovery when using the DTP-frother mixture were similar irrespective of the type of alcohol or polypropylene glycol frother that was used. In an attempt to distinguish the mechanism of enhanced flotation recovery, various supplementary experiments were performed. It was found through adsorption experiments that no DTP was adsorbing on to the mineral surface. Therefore, interactions at the air-water interface were performed. Surface tension and critical coalescence concentration tests showed that, while DTP is a weak surfactant at the air-water interface, it does not have a synergistic effect in the presence of frother. DTP-frother mixtures do, however, show interactions in the froth phase, indicating an interaction in the thin films. It is proposed that there is a DTP-frother interaction on the bubble surface that enhances the rate of film thinning at the 3-phase bubble-particle contact."

Introduction In 1969, the US devalued the dollar. This action, over the ensuing four years, resulted in the deregulation of the price of gold. It also resulted in the rebirth of the US gold mining industry. The extreme inflation of the 1970s led to a dramatic increase in the price of precious metals. Consequently an increased interest in the exploration for and mining of gold has occurred. The enthusiasm began among the few existing producers who had survived on marginal profits during a prolonged period of fixed prices and constantly rising costs. Then came the newcomers. They saw the opportunity to enter an industry that historically had been characterized by small operations with low capital costs. It was not until the late 1970s that large mining companies recognized that investment in gold projects could generate cash flows that previously were associated only with world class deposits. Today, gold mining has tremendous appeal for the entire mining community, despite the dramatic price drop from 1980-81 levels. There are even major firms with no mining experience attempting to gain a foothold. But how easy is it to enter the US gold mining industry? What are the basic factors that influence the economics, and what are they likely to be for the remainder of the decade? How has the industry changed, and what is the composition of the active companies? An examination of the industry will help to answer these questions. US Gold Mining History The current gold rush is actually the fifth in the 208-year history of the US. The first recorded commercial mining of gold occurred in the Southeast in 1799. It produced from small, yet relatively rich placer deposits. The famous California gold rush of 1848 placed the US as a major producer with 62.2 t (2 million oz) of output by 1850. More than 93.3 t (3 million oz) was mined by 1853, equivalent to 63% of world production. But the richest placers were soon depleted. By the end of the Civil War, annual production had declined to well below 62.2 t (2 million oz). The government then relaxed prices and the industry again began to recover. The 1870-80s saw the great mines of the California Mother Lode and Grass Valley brought into production. This was followed by development of Nevada's Comstock, which later became one of the world's largest producers. Discovery of gold at Cripple Creek in 1892, coupled with technological advances in the use of large dredges in the California placers, resulted in significant production increases. And, with the expansion of the Homestake mine at Lead, SD, in 1898, US output again surpassed the 93.3-t (3 million-oz) level. By 1905, produc¬tion climbed to 124.4 t (4 million oz) with the addition of the Alaskan deposits, new output at Goldfields, NV, and the introduction of the cyanidation process. During World War I, the government forced the shutdown of gold mines. By 1920, total production had dropped to little more than 62.2 t (2 million oz). Many mines remained closed until the Great Depression. This, combined with the devaluation of the US dollar in 1934, resulted in a gold price increase to about $1.13/g ($35 per oz). Then began the fourth gold rush. By 1937, output had again surpassed 124.4 t (4 million oz). This was due to an increase in primary production and new byproduct production from base metal operations. In making any canvass of secondary metals great care must be exercised to avoid duplication or exaggeration of net consumption. One of the major difficulties is to trace the metal accurately as it passes through the many cycles of manufacture. Greater or less duplication probably occurs in any canvass. The manufacturer of tin plate, for instance, purchases primary pig tin exclusively as a raw material. Most of it goes into the coating on the steel sheet, but a substantial part emerges in the form of byproducts such as scruffs and drosses. These are sold to other plants, where they are used in the manufacture of alloys and chemicals. Alloys and chemicals, however, are not necessarily articles for final consumption. The alloy may be sold in ingot form to a bearing manufacturer, who, in turn may produce some scrap, which he may sell to still' another plant that may make still other products. There is a considerable return of tin in the form of waste products from chemicals sold to the silk industry. Even tin plate does not represent an ultimate use of tin because the tin-can maker produces large amounts of clippings, which are sold to detinning plants, where the tin is recovered and used again for some other purpose. Thus the degree of duplication in consumption statistics depends on the point in the industrial cycle where consumption is measured.

Refractory copper ores (CROs) in central Africa contain copper minerals that are locked up in a micacious solid matrix or associated with carbonate, sulfide and phosphate minerals. Several researchers have reported that the recovery of copper from CRO material by an acid-leaching process is not economically feasible, due to the presence of excess gangue-acid-consuming minerals such as calcites, dolomite, asbolane and iron oxides. Since the proportion of acid-insoluble copper (CuS) is about 28% of total copper and total free sulfur is extremely small, sulfide flotation was considered unfavorable. Consequently, hundreds of millions of tons of CRO material have been stockpiled specifically at the Nchanga Mine of Zambia. In terms of copper distribution in CRO material, a significant portion of total copper exists as carbonates (39%) and oxides (17%), while 28% of the copper is acidinsoluble (CuS). The rest of the copper is in the form of carbonates (16%) and (hydr) oxides (17%). This means that only about 72% of total copper is recoverable through the non-oxidative acid-leaching process. In this study, batch leach tests were performed on CRO solids (d95 = 95%) to establish the gangue acid consumption values at different feed pH values and to evaluate the leaching characteristics of copper, manganese and iron within the CRO material. Subsequently, continuous leach tests were performed on CRO solids (106 um, 80% passing) using optimum leach conditions derived from batch tests. This paper aims to show that sustainable copper recovery can be achieved by selecting leaching conditions whereby gangue acid consumption (GAC) values become significantly small and the final concentration of manganese and iron in the leach solution are appreciably low.

As a part of the Bureau of Mines' intensive; 'investigation of domestic manganese deposits, ore-dressing studies were conducted on three samples of oxide and silicate manganese ores from various Wyoming properties. The samples wore as follows: 1. A 2-ton sample of ore was obtained by a Bureau engineer during examination of the Caulkins-McGuckin property in the center of Crook County, 10 miles north of Sundance, Wyo. The ore body was described as a vein deposit in rhyolite porphyry. 2. The J. B. C. Mining Co. submitted a 1-ton sample of oxide manganese ore from a property located 44 miles northeast of Rock River in Albany County, Wyoming. 3. A 1-ton sample of oxide-silicate-ore was obtained by a Bureau examining engineer from the Gheen property in the northeast corner of Washakie County, Wyo. The ore body was described as a replacement deposit in a country rock of silicified limestone. As the samples differed widely in physical and chemical characteristics and also in their response to methods of concentration, ore from each property was considered a separate ore-dressing problem.

"CMP will be an essential process in the production of integrated circuits containing copper interconnects. This study aims to improve our mechanistic understanding of the role that organic chelating agents might play in the reactive slurries used in copper CMP. Copper dissolution behavior in EDTA arid glycine was first examined by producing potential-pH diagrams for the copper-water-EDTA and copper-water-glycine 'systems. The results of potentiodynamic polarization experiments were then considered in light of these diagrams. . In-situ polarization experiments were conducted to gain insight into the electrochemistry of copper during dynamic polishing in slurries prepared from EDT A and glycine.IntroductionCopper has recently started to replace aluminum as the interconnect metal in integrated circuits. Copper interconnection offers faster and more reliable integrated circuits due to its higher electrical conductivity and superior electromigration resistance (1). The damascene method is used to form multilevel interconnects in the manufacture of integrated circuit devices with copper metallization (2, 3). Copper is deposited by CVD or electroplating into vias and trenches etched in the interlayer dielectric (IDL), over a diffusion barrier usually made from titanium, tantalum or their nitrides. Chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) then prepares the wafer for the next deposition step, by removing excess copper and planarizing the surface. During CMP, the wafer is rotated and pressed against a rotating platen covered with a polishing pad. Chemically active slurries containing submicron size abrasive particles (Si02, Al20 3, ceria, diamond, etc.) are applied. Both the mechanical action of the abrasive particles and the chemical action of slurry constituents remove material from the wafer surface. Planarization results because material is removed faster from protruding regions on the surface than from recessed regions. Since CMP can globally planarize .the entire wafer, it has become one of the key technologies for producing integrated circuits with copper metallization."

The Karst asbestos deposit, discovered seventy years ago, is 32 miles south of Bozeman in southwestern Montana. The deposit is about one-half mile west of the Gallatin River which flows in a deep V-shaped valley flanked on either side by rugged mountains. The Madison range is west of the river and the Gallatin range lies to the east. A busy all-weather highway, U.S. No. 191, follows the river and is the major north-south route between Bozeman and the Gallatin valley to the north and Idaho and the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park to the south. The asbestos deposit is a large body of serpentinized peridotite in which anthophy11ite.occurs, both as distinct veins and as a disseminated mineral in the peridotite mass. The known exposures of the asbestos-bearing rock occur on a steen south slope at an "elevation of about 7000 feet, an elevation 'which is about 1200 feet above the Gallatin River. Over the years, a number of small companies have attempted to exploit the Karst asbestos deposit without continuing success. The present operator, Galaxy Mining Corporation, has attempted a systematic approach to the problem by utilizing geologic and engineering surveys to determine the economic and technical feasibility of a mine and plant to produce a finished asbestos pro-duct. The results of this work indicate a high probability of success for the project.
