Two coal samples (810 Panel and Area 900) collected from Clarence Colliery have been tested under a controlled heating procedure to evaluate the gas evolution trends corresponding to increasing temperature. Gas evolution data are normally used to identify key gas indicators and validate the trigger action response plan settings for the mine as part of the Principal Hazard Management Plan for Spontaneous Combustion. The samples were located some 6 km apart and there is a significant coal-type difference between them. At low temperatures (<100°C), the Graham’s ratio (GR) values for the two samples are almost identical. However, at elevated temperatures, there is a significant difference, with the 810 Panel coal having higher GR values than the Area 900 coal. This is most likely due to a difference in the coal reactivity. The 810 Panel coal does not evolve ethylene until temperatures in excess of 140°C are reached, whereas Area 900 coal evolves ethylene once temperatures in excess of 120°C are reached. The 810 Panel coal also produces significant ethane evolution (200 ppm) at low temperatures (50°C) due to the presence of retained ethane seam gas, which decreases as the temperature increases due to desorption from the coal. Once the coal temperature exceeds 130°C, the ethane evolution increases again due to coal oxidation reactions, reaching levels of 50 ppm. In contrast, the Area 900 coal has no significant low-temperature ethane evolution, and ethane evolution only increases once the coal temperature exceeds 120°C. There are also noticeable differences in the trends of other gases evolved from the coal. These findings have implications for the interpretation of gas monitoring results from the two different areas of the mine. To exploit an underground mine effectively and safely, it is important to have a good understanding of the geotechnical behavior of the rockmass surrounding the underground mine excavation. The aim of this study was to investigate, at the threedimensional level, the geotechnical behavior around a tunnel excavated in a metal mine in China. A three-dimensional numerical model was built by using the 3DEC software package to simulate a tunnel excavation under a high in situ stress condition and by relying on the information available on lithology, geological structures, in situ stress measurements, physical and mechanical properties of intact rock, discontinuities, and interfaces between different rocks. The authors also investigated the effect of the discontinuity network, possible intact rock and discontinuity parameter variability, representation of rock masses as discontinuum or equivalent continuum material and rock support system on the deformation, and stability around the tunnel. A very good agreement was obtained between the collected field deformation monitoring results and the results of the conducted numerical stress analyses with appropriate geomechanical property values.

During the last 20 years, experimenters have sought to utilize pulverized coal in boiler plants, but refractory and slag troubles have usually overbalanced any gains in efficiency that were obtained. These troubles were caused largely by lack of knowledge of the proper methods of coal preparation and lack of a furnace design that would be adaptable to pulverized-coal firing. When this information was obtained the results were so much more satisfactory that within the last 5 years approximately 80,000 boiler hp. have been installed in plants ranging from 1000 to 20,000 boiler hp. rated capacity, which are operating at an average of 174 per cent. of rating. The first commercial installation for burning pulverized coal under boilers was made at the Parsons shops of the M. K. & T. railroad in 1916. Of eight 250-hp. water-tube boilers thus fitted, six were operated continuously for 3 yr., when oil was obtained at such a low price as to warrant its use. Since then, this plant has been operating alternately on pulverized coal and oil, depending on prevailing prices. Recently gas has been discovered within 20 mi. of this plant, so that this fuel may also be used. No change in furnace design was made when changing from pulverized coal to oil or gas firing. One of the principal advantages of this method of firing is its ability to utilize, with maximum efficiency, all kinds of coal, irrespective of quality or physical characteristics. In fact, quite a number of the present pulverized-coal installations were made for the purpose of utilizing coal that could not be marketed or used in any other way. The Pacific Coast Coal Co., at Black Diamond, Wash., formerly hand fired the boilers, using approximately 125 tons of prepared steam-size coal daily. The Black Diamond steam coal is the best quality of coal for steaming purposes mined in that section of the country, and there is a market for all that can be produced. By installing a pulverizing plant, it was possible to substitute coal of a size and quality that had no commercial value, so that 125 tons daily of the best steam coal formerly used at the mines is now marketed. "The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Gas Association investigating the relation of properties of gas oils to the gum-forming properties of carbureted water gas. The present report deals with the effects of operating practice on the composition of the light oils from carbureted water gas. A general outline of the gummy meter problem has been presented in a previous paper.*Carbureted water gas is a mixture roughly of 80 per cent water gas by volume and 20 per cent oil gas. The latter, though small in relative volume, supplies more than half of the heating value of the gas under the present-day standard. Therefore, it is logical that the oil used in the carbureting process and the operating practices involved should be subjected to scientific study. The electrostatic beneficiation of coal is based on tribocharging characteristics of ash forming minerals and coal particles. The tribocharging of quartz, pyrite and coal particles contacted with various metals and polymeric materials have been measured and the charge acquisition is assessed through surface energy calculations from liquid contact angle data. The contact angles, before and after tribocharging of solids, are measured using Krüss tensiometer and Washburn?s method where the sample holders in tensiometer are specially constructed with tribocharger materials. The charge polarity and amount of charge acquired by quartz, pyrite and carbon with metal tribochargers were found in good agreement with the reported work functions of the contacting surfaces. The charge results with polymer materials differed from the work function values, presumably caused by surface contamination. The surface energy of quartz calculated by all the theoretical approaches in the literature showed that the tribocharging increases the surface energy. Both polar and non-polar components computed from Fowkes and Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kaelble approaches dis-play that both these components increased after triboelectrification. However, the polar component divided into acid and base components, as in van Oss approach, manifest decreasing acid part and increasing base part. Since quartz charged negatively during tribocharging with metal surfaces and therefore accepted electrons, the determined acid and base surface energy components are consistent with charge transfer process. The results also elucidate an explicit correlation between the charges generated by powders and the surface acceptor (acid) and donor (base) electronic states and thereby the work functions. A novel fluidized bed tribocharger was designed and developed with internal baffle system for efficient contact electrification of mineral and maceral to produce high differential charging for efficient separation. The results achieved on coal with 45% ash content are presented and discussed.

This paper shows about pigment characteristics and film condition of antistatic transparency paint which contained PASS TRAN.L.IntroductionRecently rapid development of electronics technology diffused electronic devices and products to Office, Factory, Laboratory and our life. But the other side, there are many problems for electronics parts which were caused electrostatic damage under static electricity. Demand of antistatic materials were become lager by this situation.There is close relationship between surface resistivity of material and static electricity. If the surface resistivity of object is enough low (under 109 Q /Sq), static electricity is dissipated quickly. So it is necessary for prevention of electrostatic charge to decrease surface resistivity of material using electroconductive coating.1) There are many type of electroconductive materials, for example, carbon black, metal powder, electroconductive polymer and so on. Especially, carbon black is used for general purpose by reason of its low cost, but it has big problem of black color. Due to the world's ever increasing minerals and energy demands, process plants have to cope economically with ever growing throughput rates. This trend has accelerated the development of high capacity vibrating screens. Screens with screening areas of 30 to 50 square meter (322 to 540 square feet) and width of 5.5 meter (18') are technically possible and are being used presently with great success. This paper will concern itself with the general aspects of large screen design, by using modern technology and the latest findings with regards to fatigue strengths relative to the laws of vibration. It also will investigate the technical and economical limits of such designs.

Frequency of reports on premature failure of rock bolts and cable bolts have increased in past two decades. Such a failure threatens both the safety of underground mine workers and the economic viability of the operations. Herein, we report on analysis of rock bolts and cable bolts failed recently in three underground mines in Australia. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were used to study the failed bolts. MPI showed a number of subcritical cracks on the surface of the bolts. The majority of the cracks in both cable bolts and rock bolts were initiated from the base of ribs (indentation) where the stress concentration was high. SEM examinations showed tearing topography surface (TTS) in all failed rock bolts and cable bolts. These indicated that the failure occurred through hydrogen assisted stress corrosion cracking (HISCC). Tunnels in urban areas generally require deep excavations in soils under the groundwater table. In The Netherlands uplift loads are generally taken by piles installed into dense sand layers, which are hard to penetrate. To avoid nuisance and damage to the environment, piles often need to be installed using vibration free methods, which also have the advantage of low noise levels during installation. Drilling piles and obtaining a high uplift resistance is a contradiction in itself. Franki has adopted several installation methods based on the injection of grout during drilling and/or post grouting to overcome the difficulty of hard layers. This report presents two projects, situated in Rotterdam and Sneek, where vertical tension piles in floors, subject to high uplift loads, have been used. It also explores a project in Zeebrugge (Belgium), where tension piles are installed at an inclination of 1:1 to anchor a diaphragm wall for a quay construction. Test results presented in this report show, that vibration free and soil displacing piles can be installed in very dense sand layers and that a high uplift resistance can be achieved. It is also shown, that a variety of installation methods is available, even in limited space.

Mae Moh mine, operated by Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand (EGAT), is the largest open pit mine in Southeast Asia. Its production is approximately 15 million lignite tons and 90 million m3 of waste, annually. The bottom of the final pit limit is designed to be approximately 500 m in depth. Presently, the pit depth is almost 250 m below original surface. The complexity of geological structures, such as faults, has caused a number of geotechnical difficulties. In a challenging lowwall area, called Area 4.1, an inclined weak bedding plane, G1, will be daylighted along the lowwall as following by mine plans. The dimensions of Area 4.1 are nearly 300 m wide and 90 m high. The friction and dip angles of the G1 interface are reportedly 12° and 15°, respectively. A three million m3 claystone block, resting above G1, would potentially slide down, and possibly cause a massive failure. EGAT engineers are acutely aware of the potential gigantic sliding failure and are modifying the mine plan in Area 4.1 to improve mine safety and minimize the displacement of the potential sliding block, reduce the possibility of failure and lower the additional mining cost as much as possible. The cut and fill mining technique was selected and studied to achieve those goals for mining in Area 4.1. With this mining technique, G1 will be partially daylighted. Therefore, an arch formation is induced with a sliding block above the mining area, which could perform as a temporary support undercutting a certain span. Initial studies of the behavior of the partially undercut slope are presented in this paper, along with a review of the similar failure history in Mae Moh mine and a 3-dimensional numerical model of the mine. The failure history review provides an estimation of undercut span without failure. The three-dimensional numerical model results, using 3DEC, gave an initial approximation of the displacement of the sliding block in Area 4.1. The next exciting study of the behavior of partially undercut slope is a trial undercut slope field experiment in Area 4.1. Currently, a trial undercut slope field experiment in Area 4.1 is under construction. In the field experiment, a number of monitoring programs will be installed in Area 4.1 to monitor and obtain information to allow a better understanding of the behavior.

Conventionally, cement deep mixing (CDM) columns are designed to have constant diameters over the improved depth as this facilitates the construction procedures. However, this design pattern may be inefficient in cases of spread footings or shallow foundations. This paper first briefly introduces principles of an improved CDM method that can create head-enlarged CDM (termed PF) columns. A simple analysis approach was introduced to obtain optimal shape of PF columns that results in minimum settlement. The effectiveness of this improved method over the conventional CDM method was then illustrated by settlement analysis for an actual footing in a case study using two recommended analytical methods in the literature. Analysis results from the case indicated that by using the same amount of soil-cement mixed volumes, settlement from a footing on PF columns can reduce up to 10 % compared with that from the same footing on CDM columns. In addition, a material quantity comparison for the case indicated that to have the same settlement values the volume of each PF column can be reduced of around 10% compared with that of the CDM column. INTRODUCTION The cement deep mixing (CDM) method is one of the most popular methods in ground improvement works. Details on the method such as construction procedures, necessary equipment and recommendations are described in many references or manuals (e.g. Bruce et al. 2013, BS EN 2015, Kitazume and Terashi 2013). Conventionally, CDM columns are designed to have constant diameters over the improved depth as this facilitates the construction procedures. However, this design pattern is found inefficient in cases of spread footings or shallow foundations as the upper soil layers are naturally weaker than the deeper ones but are subjected to larger amount of induced stress from the superstructures.

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust was established in August 1983, at the request of the Bureau of Mines, to conduct research that affords ""...each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of (his/her) adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupational disease"". The Center consists of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRI) of The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with the MRIs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). (FIGURE 34) Michigan Technological University (MTU) is also affiliated with the Center in the area of diesel particulates.The Center brings together experts concerned with particles causing potentially disabling or fatal diseases including pneumoconiosis (""black-lung""), silicosis, and asbestosis. The latter is of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace. The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The research program of the Generic Mineral Technology Center explores these scientific, engineering or medical concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniquesand technology that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. During the past 50 years, significant research has been performed in the ecology and physiology of plants that colonize soils containing elevated concentrations of heavy metals. Similar work has also been performed on plants that are able to survive acidic and saline environments. Efforts have focused on the ecological analysis of plant communities that occur over a range of metalliferous mining wastes. Investigations have been performed on the mechanisms that allow selected varieties of plant species to survive in normally phytotoxic environments and on the potential applications of metal-tolerant varieties of plant species. The purpose is the remediation and reclamation of mining wastes and soils that contain unusually high concentrations of so-called heavy metals. Characteristics of some mineral wastes Metalliferous mining wastes present special environmental restoration problems because of their toxicity. Potential toxicities are mostly caused by residual metals derived from weathering of low-grade ore or the waste products of mineral processing. In cases where pyrite forms a part of the mining waste, acid generation by oxidation may exacerbate the toxicity problem by promoting heavy-metal mobilization in aqueous solution.

Nowadays along with population growth, industry development, consumption of mineral resources and the fact that the reserves on hand are running out, the depth of surface and underground mines for further exploitation are increasing. During recent years, in underground mining, the block caving method for low-grade and large-scale deposits has shown a growing rate of application. This method is very cost effective and economically affordable. The dimensions of blocks are one of the most important parameters which should be taken into account since it has been proved to have a great deal of effect on technical issues such as commencement of caving and mine design. Proper calculation of the length and width for a block in this method leads to proper caving and discharging which are the most important stages. Therefore, in this method, the calculation of the optimized dimensions (length and width) of blocks is not only important but also directly helps the productivity of extraction. In this study, firstly for the purpose of facilitation, some assumptions were considered and having used these assumptions for estimation of optimized length and width of block, a relationship based on rock mechanics and physics was explored. Furthermore, some necessary details were added to the said relationship and finally, it was transformed into an inequality. Solving this inequality provides us with the optimized length and width of the block. The explored relationship was analyzed with MATLAB software and the graphs thereof were drawn. In these graphs, each time one of the input parameters has been drawn up in a logical range so that it could be compared with previous states.

L'exploration géologique pour les EOP (EOP: platine, palladium, iridium, osmium, ruthénium, rhodium) requiert avant tout des méthodes appropriees à la mesure de ces élémenIs. L'approche analytique choisie doit tenir compte de plusieurs facteurs, les plus importants étant: le type de materiel analysé, sa representativite, la sensibitite de la methode et les cotits reliés à son utilisation. Dans cette optique, plusieurs démarches ana/ytiquessont possibles, toutes requérant une étape de préconcentration. L 'une des plus adéquate consiste à effectuer une préconcentration par fusion plombeuse suivie d'une analyse par émission au plasma, cette procédure permettant de mesurer Ie platine, la palladium et Ie rhodium à des couts compétitifs (15 $/échantillon). Advenant 10 presence de teneurs appréciables de l'un ou plusieurs de ces éléments, une préconcentration par fusion au sulfure de nickel suivie d 'une analyse par activation neutronique assure alors la mesure de tous les EGP ainsi que celie de l’or (90 $/échantillon). Il est important de noter que Ie nickel, ades teneurs superieures à 4%, interfère au cours de l'étape de préconcentration par fusion plombeuse, ce qui se traduit pas sous-dosage des concentrations en platine, effectivement presentes dans l'échantillon. Ainsi, les géologues à la recherche d'EPG dans des environnements géologiques riches en nickel devraient s'assurer que l'analyse utilise, au cours de l'étape de préconcentration, une fusion au sulfure de nickel.

"Current closure objectives and criteria are often difficult to achieve and are not delivering value for money outcomes at closure. Current mine closure processes tend to focus on rehabilitation and revegetation of landform structures to as close to premining condition as possible, rather than focusing on the functions of those structures and values they provided. Because mining has highly disturbed the environment, premining conditions and vegetation are often not achievable and objectives and criteria aimed at achieving close to these conditions have been shown to be very costly.The authors have developed a broader approach to developing mine closure plans that is based on environmental risk and gaining post-closure social, environmental and economic value. We think the focus should shift from trying to return the original landscape to returning functions and values provided on- and off-site. If it is not possible to return values on-site in a cost-effective manner, investment should be provided to deliver equivalent values elsewhere.This process can provide better stakeholder acceptance, deliver better environmental outcomes on the tenement and within the catchment and significantly reduce costs, whist fulfilling closure obligations.This framework should enable closure teams to: focus on the functions and services that are important to achieve as outcomes post-closure, rather than a focus on revegetation and replacing the premining biophysical structure engage meaningfully with stakeholders regarding closure outcomes and link outcomes to stakeholder values conduct transparent option evaluations that enable stakeholders to clearly understand the costs and benefits associated with each option and to participate in dialogue on option selection.We present examples of how the framework could be applied to identify alternate closure options that achieve equivalent value outcomes while reducing the costs of closing the mines.CITATION:Howard, B, Pershke, D and Jones, M, 2014. In many instances, blasting exerts the dominant control over the economics and safety of excavation, where the materials involved are too hard and tough to be fragmented efficiently by other means. However, associated with the fragmentation process other effects very often result that are not desirable and may even be hazardous, such as fly rock, air blast, excessive overbreak, and damaging ground virbrations. It has always been the desire of those concerned with blasting to better control the forces involved so as to improve the breakage of materials, but at the same time reduce, or eliminate if possible, the unwanted side effects. Until the last decade or two, little was known of the phenomena concerned with blasting. However, since that time many investigators have studied blast mechanisms produced from both chemical and nuclear explosions, with the result that general concepts of the principles have been developed. But, in general, it is assumed that the energy from the explosion would be propagated spherically throughout the material, the latter of which for convenience of analyses is considered homogeneous and isotropic, i.e., the properties are the same in all directions, However, rocks are not isotropic as a rule, and evidence clearly indicates blasting forces rarely function uniformly or in spherical form as theorized.

A study of the combustion emission products of rigid ventilation ducting was completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The ducting was composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. Four properties of the ducting were evaluated: (1) propensity to ignite, (2) smoke characteristics, (3) gas emissions, and (4) heat release. Particle sizes, obscuration, optical densities, and production constants for gas and smoke were also calculated. These results provide comprehensive data about the emission products, detectability, and relative hazards of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting and other mine combustibles under realistic fire conditions.
