Fifty years ago, belt scales were mechanical devices based on a complex weight balancing design. Today's systems use load cells to assess material weight, belt speed sensors and microprocessor-based integrators to continuously compute the rate of material transferred along a conveyor. Belt scales have become important assets to a plant. They help maximize the use of raw materials, control inventories and aid in the manufacture of a consistent product. Choosing and installing a belt scale system may seem complicated but it can be simplified by following a few guidelines.

Aim to the separation problem of high concentration V–Fe in stronger acidic leaching solution of vanadium slag, a novel chelating extraction system is proposed to separate V and Fe. Influence factors including initial pH value, the extractant concentration, the phase ratio, temperature and time are investigated. The experiment results show that single extraction rate of V and Fe reach 85.57 and 0.39% respectively, when pH value is −0.4, organic phase composition is 30% Mextral 973H + 70% sulfonated kerosene oil, O:A = 1:1, stirring time is 10 min, extraction temperature is 30 °C. The industrial experiment results of three levels countercurrent extraction show that the total extraction rate of vanadium and iron can reach 97.44 and 0.23%, separation factor is 6410. The effective separation of V and Fe in high acid and high iron solution can be accomplished.

The rheological properties of five kaolins, isostatically pressurized at 4 x10 Pa for 10 min in the presence/absence of water, was determined. Under dry conditions, measured viscosity values either decreased or remained the same. After treatment under wet conditions, measured viscosity values were 30-60% higher at high shear and 50-60% higher at low shear. These results correlate with variations in nanomorphology and structural order. Dry compaction degraded kaolinite crystals but wet-pressing appeared to cause an increase in the proportion of euhedral crystallites and a decrease in deformed crystals. Dry compaction decreased the low-defect phase proportion (ldp), but in contrast, the ldp in wet-treated kaolins remained constant or increased. Results show that hydrous pressure treatment produces a change in viscosity of kaolin suspensions, yielding the potential for improving paper coating performance, whereas anhydrous pressure treatment decreased or maintained the viscosity.

All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

"The human history is characterized by social development based on mineral and energy resources, and many conflicts to take the resources by power. This is shown by not only world wars but also many local conflicts as well as international supremacy.IntroductionThe world population after B. C. 10000, which is summarized in several papers, is approximated by four straight lines on a semilogarithmic diagram as shown in Figure 1 [l]. The annual rates of increasing are 0.0041, 0.071, 0.53, and 1.85 % from the old and young periods. The boundaries among four periods are approximately B. C. 4600, AD. 1670, and 1930. The start of the second period seems to correspond to the beginning of agriculture and cattle breeding. Precisely speaking, the usage of natural energy resources such as woods and domestic animals already began, but is inferred to have become common after the age. The third and fourth periods are characterized by the common usage of coal and oil, respectivety. Not only energy resources but also mineral resources including gold, copper, iron and others are also important for the human history.Mineral and energy resources have supported the development of the .human civilization, and have caused many conflicts because of this reason. Every day newspapers report conflicts, such as Chechnya, East Timor and Ache. We can easily point out the facts that the conflicts closely relate to mineral and energy resources. Groznyj, Capital of Chechnya, is located on the western margin of Caspian oil field. Many mineral deposits occur in Kavkaz Mountains running south of Chechnya. Subsea oil fields occur in Timor Gap located between East Timor and Australia. Ache is also one of oil fields in Indonesia. It is very difficult to state present conflicts independently of a political view of point. For this reason let us try to historically review the relation between mineral and energy resources and international domination and conflicts [2] based on many papers [3]."

Iron ore pellets experience degradation during handling due low energy impacts and stresses. These impacts lead to volume or surface breakage of the pellets, creating fine particles that accumulate along the process. Some of the particles are in contact with the air and are dragged as dust into the workplace or into the atmosphere. The aerodynamic size of the particles allows them to be potentially inhaled by the workers or to be carried to nearby communities. Dust emission becomes critical at specific locations, such as transfer chutes and stockpiles. This work models the dust generation that occurs in an iron ore pellet stockyard using a methodology that combines experiments to quantify the degradation of the pellets to mathematical modelling of the dust emission mechanisms in the stockyard. First, laboratory tests were used to characterise the amount of mass and the particle size distribution of the dust generated by degradation under controlled conditions. Second, the flow over a stockpile of an iron ore pellet company was simulated with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Third, semiempirical equations linked the data generated by simulations and laboratory tests to estimate the dust emission in the stockyard. Finally, results were validated with measured field data, obtained with a novel online measurement tool. Results suggest that the approach is able to predict dust emission with sufficient accuracy and can be used for further implementation in the management of operations and decision making in order to reduce the environmental impact of the process. FIVE days, extending from Monday, Feb. 18 to Friday, Feb. 22, inclusive, will be required for the annual meeting this year. The first fours days will be devoted to reading and discussion of papers, general and committee business meetings, two lectures, luncheons, dinners and all the pleasures of a big, general reunion. The fifth day will be given over to an all-day excursion for both men and women by special train to West Point, in celebration of the birthday of the first President of the United States. Washington having been an engineer and now after one hundred and thirty-one years the country having selected as President another engineer in the person of Herbert Hoover, our own past president and honorary member, it is proposed to celebrate with a good old-fashioned picnic and inspect the school. The authorities at the Military Academy have undertaken to welcome the engineers and do whatever they may to make our pilgrimage notable. Other social features planned for the week are numerous. Luncheon will be served as usual at the building each day of the meeting to all members and guests. This year a very nominal charge will be made, primarily to overcome deficits due to irregular attendance. Monday noon, the Non-metallic Minerals Committee will lunch at the Engineers' Club and in the evening the Milling Methods Committee will dine there. The Annual Smoker will be held at Hotel Astor after dinner. Professional entertainment of high order is promised, but not too much to interfere with the numerous group reunions that characterize this func- tion.

Blast designs can have productive and non-productive impacts on downstream stages, mine productivity and operating costs. On the other hand, ground vibration, fragmentation, and back break caused by blasting impose damage and financial penalties and which must be controlled by blast design. One of the significant variables in blast design is the burden. In this study, the potentials of artificial neural network are investigated in prediction of burden in the Sungun copper open-pit mine. Input data were assembled through 18 blasting blocks according to different levels and experimental geomechanical investigation. To construct the model blastability index, uniaxial compression strength, hole diameter, specific weight of rock, rock quality designation and cohesion strength are taken as input parameters, whereas, burden is considered as an output parameter. Mean square error was used as the performance function and back propagation algorithm as the training function, containing four hidden layers and 14 data sets. Four sets of data were used to make sure that correct training had been carried out. This produced the coefficient correlation of 0.662.

THE WORLDWIDE economic expansion that has characterized the first 3 years of the 1960's continued through 1964 and was reflected in North America by strength in the industrial economy of the United States, which again was dominant. Advances in production were recorded in virtually all industries, including the mineral industry; 1964 mineral production established a new high, 5.4 percent above the previous peak recorded in 1963. However, the percentage increase in value of North American mineral production was slightly below overall economic growth. For industry in general, consumer demand held firm throughout the year and overall commodity prices averaged 2 percent higher than in 1963. Wages and salary payments also were up. With the single exception of the dock strike in the United States, the year was free of serious labor troubles and unemployment in both Canada and the States was at a low level. Despite the Viet-Nam situation, relatively tranquil international relations contributed to the forward movement of North American business. Total gross national product (GNP) for Canada and United States, in current dollars, was estimated at US$672.2 billion; 6.8 percent above the previous year's figure. Combined national income in 1964 amounted to US$546.9 billion, which was nearly 7.0 percent more than in 1963. In 1964, gains were recorded in each of more than 50 metals, nonmetals, and fuels commodities that comprise the North American output. The greatest category increase was 13 percent in metals, which was in part attributable to the 14 percent rise to a new record in value of iron and steel in United States, a 29 percent higher value of Canadian iron ore and a 57 percent rise in Canadian zinc. Despite a moderate decline in prices of iron ore and iron and steel products, generally favorable markets and rising prices for metallic ores and metals were a stimulant to the metals industry. Nonmetallic materials, with a total value in excess of US$5.25 billion were 7.3 percent higher than in 1963. "Case 2. 100th Street Bus Depot: Elimination of Deep Caissons in Favor of Spread FootingsThe PROJECTThe 100th Street Bus Depot is a new five-story bus terminal for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority occupying one city block in Manhattan between 99th and 100th Streets, and between Lexington and Park Avenues. It replaces a former two-story garage, built in the 1890’s and initially used as a trolley-car barn. The new structure is a steelframed building with concrete floors and includes a partial basement near its middle. The easternmost column line with design loads of 10 MN (1,125 tons) is within 1.5 m of the underlying multi-tube Lexington Avenue subway system. To support the new columns along the subway line, the project bid plans had called for 1 m diameter and 17 m deep drilled shafts. The upper 14 m of each unit would have required 50 mm separation from the surrounding rock to prevent stress from being imposed on the roof and walls of the adjacent tunnel. The column loads were thus transferred to below the base of the tunnel and supported by 3 m long sockets in bedrock. The bid documents contained extensive test boring information, which revealed that the project site was underlain by massive Manhattan Mica Schist bedrock within just 3 m below street level. In fact, the Lexington Avenue two-level and multi-tube subway had been tunneled through this rock circa 1910, leaving an about 6 m thick solid roof over the upper-level subway. The NX rock core recovery values were near 100 %, with average RQD of 75 %.The CHANGEThe Bus Depot project was let as a design/build contract with a very aggressive fast-track schedule. Both the pre-bid preliminary design and the subsequent final design by the Contractor’s own hired design engineers relied heavily on very restrictive codes, including unnecessarily conservative approaches to seismic design. Any suggestion for value engineering change was undesirable and was strongly resisted. Yet, objecting against the blind reliance on codes in foundation design, the author questioned the real need for the deep drilled shafts to support the columns along the subway. The unsupported statement that no stresses from the new structure can be imposed on the roof and walls of the adjacent tunnel was not sufficient reason for the drilled-shaft design. Unconvinced that deep shafts were necessary, the author rushed to MTA’s warehouse where many rows of rock core boxes were neatly stacked. Careful inspection and some simple testing of the rock cores with the blows of a geologic hammer gave support to the reservations about the design. Later, as expected, the schist bedrock at this site was found to be hard to very hard with unconfined compressive strength values estimated to range from at least 70 MPa to over 100 MPa (10,000 psi to 15,000 psi). The tensile strength of the rock was assessed to be minimum 5 MPa (750 psi)."

In an effort to develop a novel flash ironmaking process, the chemistry of selected slags was investigated. In different ironmaking processes, the molten bath (iron-slag bath) is expected to be in contact with gas atmospheres of H2/H2O, CO/CO2/H2/H2O, and CO/CO2. The latter was investigated to allow comparison with the blast-furnace conditions. The slag composition was selected to resemble that of the blast furnace with CaO/SiO2 in the range 0.8 to 1.4. The temperature range was 1550 to 1650°C. The oxygen partial pressure was maintained in the range 10-10 to10-9 atm. The effect of water vapor on the chemistry of the slag as well as the equilibrium reactions involving the slag has been studied for the first time. H2O dramatically affects the chemistry of the slag and strongly affect the phase equilibria in the slag as well as the equilibrium distribution of elements between slag and molten metal.

After many years of research, ICI staff have developed a numerical modelling system for the study of detonator/primer/explosive configurations. Results from this work clearly identified that current primer designs were not as effective in delivering their energy potential as needed. Alternative designs were evaluated and several prototypes, all essentially spherical in shape, were built for testing. Results have shown a significant improvement in various aspects of primer performance, including omni-directional pressure transferral and increased energy release rates. Reliable, high performance priming of explosives is now achievable for a much wider application range.

THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

The Absaroka-Beartooth Study Area is a tract of approximately 1.4 million acres of National forest land in southern Montana, part of the Greater Yellowstone Area. This study evaluated the mineral potential of four mineral terranes containing undiscovered resources in the area. The geological data is probabilistic, with estimates of the possible number: of deposits and their grades and tonnages. Possible future development scenarios range from no development to many mines, including some very large. As two thirds of the study area is within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, the future development scenarios reflect the area's mineral potential, not what we expect to see in the foreseeable future. Based on the analysis performed on these four terranes, the most likely future scenario for the study area would include the potential for two medium sized, (predominately) gold, mines, each employing a few hundred workers. There is a small chance, less than 5%, that a large Porphyry Copper or Superior Iron deposit would be discovered and be economically feasible to develop.

The extraction and processing of metals and other minerals have played an important role in economic, political, and social development worldwide, from the early stages of prehistory to the present day (Gosner, 2020). In other words, mining has been a fundamental part of human civilization, providing the raw materials necessary for technological, infrastructure, and industrial advances. As society progresses, the importance of mining continues to grow, supporting the development of everything from the smallest electronic devices to the tallest skyscrapers (The Importance Of Mining In Modern Society, 2024). The mining industry is closely linked to a country’s economy and activities related to natural resources. The economy of a nation is connected to its extractive industries (Moreira & McMahon, 2014), which have seen dramatic growth in recent years (Pietrobelli et al., 2018). In a context of increasing demand for natural resources, driven by the development of emerging technologies, the expansion of infrastructure, and the foundation of engineering achievements for the coming decades (Importance Of Mining - Minerals Education Coalition, 2024), mining should focus efforts on global development, requiring a comprehensive approach to sustainability that addresses the planet’s needs and protects the well-being, primarily, of the communities and environments where mining operations take place (Figari, 2024). In these areas, diversity and inclusion should be promoted, thus fostering equitable and sustainable development. Speaking of sustainable development, diversity, and inclusion brings us to an interesting topic: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, which could serve as a key framework for fostering a strong social management culture in mining. The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals, n.d.). Companies have compelling reasons to align their actions with the SDGs, as their long-term success depends on healthy communities. This is a major challenge and requires collaborative efforts (Singh & Rahman, 2021). As Fraser (2021) mentions, achieving more sustainable outcomes may involve mining companies and communities working together collaboratively. This research proposes an innovative approach: Inclusive Mining for Sustainable Development, which aims not only to maximize economic profitability but also to promote social and environmental well-being by integrating the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily focused on diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved through the implementation of a key value-added initiative for mining companies: the Creation and operation of a corporate volunteering program aimed at developing and executing inclusive practices to promote gender equality, the inclusion of local communities and indigenous peoples, and accessibility for people with disabilities. This proposal will educate employees and stakeholders about sustainability and promote concrete actions through corporate volunteering to strengthen the mining company’s commitment to community development, improve social relations, and advance toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, establishing the company as a global change agent.

A large scale distributed process con-trol system has been successfully applied to the automatic control of aluminium reduction cells at Boyne Smelters. A three stage hierarchy of minicomputers and microcomputers is used to continuously monitor and control conditions in each cell and to manage the data generated during the process.The automation hardware was purchased on the basis of low cost, high reliability, prior use in the aluminium industry and a high level of backup under failure conditions. The hardware has met performance criteria to date.The process control strategies have continually been updated to minimise the energy and raw material consumptions in each cell. A major change to systems software has recently been made to decrease the development time for-future changes. Various low energy potline retrofit alterations are currently being investigated requiring significant changes to the process control strategies.

The effectiveness of induction fans in ventilating dead headings was studied in the laboratory and underground. The following fan attachments were evaluated: a. Aerodynamic nozzle b. Various lengths of vent tube c. Honeycomb airflow straightener. Various fan locations were also tested. The following conclusions were reached: a. A nozzle on a fan located against the drift wall gives the greatest jet penetration distance. b. Air straighteners are ineffective in increasing jet penetration. c. Induction fans are ineffective in removing contaminants from dead headings without sufficient main ventilation flow.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has conducted research to improve the nondestructive testing (NDT) of wire hoist ropes. Losses in the diameter of a wire hoist rope are used as one criterion for judging when a rope should be replaced. Losses are determined by periodically measuring the rope diameter and comparing this measurement with the original measured diameter; when the diameter reaches a specified minimum at any point along its length, the rope must be retired. Generally, these measurements are made at randomly selected locations along the length of the rope, using a hand caliper. To provide more accurate measurements and to allow measurements to be taken continuously along the length of a hoist rope, an optical diameter-monitoring system was built for the USBM under contract. Continuous measurements are preferable because, when combined with continuous electro-magnetic NDT results, they can indicate whether losses in metallic cross-sectional area originate from external wear or internal wear and corrosion. Tests of the system showed that the instrument met specifications when measuring wire rope at low rope speeds but was inaccurate at speeds over about 30 m/min (100 ft/min). This report describes the prototype system, presents the results of the test program, and describes the capabilities of the system.

Analysis of ground and airborne radiometric measurements in the Saquarema region (Rio de Janeiro) provides new insights into the breakdown and transport of mineral aggregates containing monazites, under sub-tropical weathering conditions. The breakdown process, accompanied by loss of low-density clay fractions in weathered materials is considered responsible for the observed patterns in relative enrichment of thorium and uranium along the migration paths of radionuclides. The characteristic features of these patterns provide clues as to the time and distance scales associated with processes of weathering and erosion. It is also possible to determine approximate locations of concentrations of accessory minerals. In this context, we advance the hypothesis that large under-water monazite deposits may be present along the offshore sand banks, in the coastal region of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

* Kennecott Copper Corp. gets Charles R. Cox as president on Jan. 1. Mr. Cox is resigning his position as president of Carnegie-Illinois to take the new post with Kennecott, left vacant by the death of Mr. Stannard in September. •The ECA signed a contract in December to advance X3,600,000 to Newmont Mining Corp. to aid development of lead and zinc mines in French Morocco. The funds are to be repaid in lead and zinc for the United States' stockpile over a period of seven years. The mines are owned by the Societe des Mines de Zellidja, with which organization Newmont is associated. • Under the direction of John M. Brooks, Jr., general manager, the Matahambra mine in Cuba, will probably produce sufficient tonnage to make 4 million lb of copper per month during 1950. The grade is presently running between 7 and 10 pet. •S. H. Ash reports that the fatality rate per million-man-hr for the anthracite industry for 1949, through November, is 0.78. This is 15 pct better than that achieved during 1948, which was the lowest fatal injury rate in coal mining history. The first full year on record without a major disaster was recorded in 1949 (p. 34). •The Atomic Energy Commission has authorized the production of 200 lb of uranium metal for use under AEC license in non-Commission research projects. •A national survey of projected 1950 purchases of new machine tools, machine tool accessories, materials handling equipment, etc., just completed by the American Society of Tool Engineers reveals that, of the companies reporting, 80 pct state that they plan to buy either more equipment or the same amount as in 1948. • Armour Research Foundation is conducting investigations for the use of clay and shale deposits to make lightweight aggregates. The material is heated until it expands and forms material suitable for mixing with cement which it is hoped will be lighter, stronger, have better insulating qualities and will lower the cost of concrete. •In the first six months of 1949 the bituminous coal miners' average hourly earnings were $1.94 -as compared with X1.392_ national average for all manufacturing. Average annual earnings of full-time employees in the bituminous coal mines in 1948 were $3387 as compared with $2809 for all industry. •LaSalle Business Bulletin reports: "year ends on a rising trend in industry and trade ... nearly record-breaking demand from almost all sources keeps business high... most indicators but little below postwar peak... forces keeping activity high arestill powerful--changes in general business conditions likely to be slow and moderate." •Office of Internal Trade of the Commerce Department requests that technical data significant to the national security which is to be sent outside of the United States be submitted to it for an official opinion on the desirability of transmitting such information. This voluntary compliance program is part of our national security control. • Blast furnace slag reduced to 12 to 16 mesh is being used for sanding track at the Mont Coal mines of Armco. The slag replaces silica sand which caused silicosis. It has proved so effective and cheap that tests are being made to use the slag for rock dusting.
