Northern ecosystems are dominated by a harsh physical environment which dictates a need for biological adaptation. As yet, it is unknown just how these adapted plants and animals will tolerate industrial development. Our work, sponsored by university, government and industry, is part of an effort to evaluate this developmental impact. Our present studies and the results to date will be discussed. Other problems to which the environmental student may address himself in the future to ensure against environ-mental degradation will be suggested.

W-hile the litle of this paper embraces the entire West Coast, the author, in the interest of simplification, has confined the discussion to California—particularly the central section. California's population has risen 45 pct since 1940. Its electric requirements have also increased, not only because of the growth in industry and population but also because of the widespread tendency of all types of electric consumers to use more electricity than ever before. The growth of California's electric utilities is shown by published data covering operations of three of its large systems and is given in Table 1. New Capacity Steam Driven In meeting these additional electric loads there has been a substantial increase in generation from fuel burning plants as shown by the published energy statistics given in Table 2. Increased Fuel Oil Consumption A study of construction plans of the three electric utility systems named in Table 2 clearly shows that expected new electric loads are to be met, to a large extent, by new steam generating capacity as shown by Table 3. D. D. Smalley, Vice President of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., in an address before the Pacific Coast Electrical Association in June 1948, stated that California utilities plan to meet new electric loads through greater use of steal11 plank and that in 1951 approximately 45 pct of the area's electric production would be by steam as compared to 33.6 pct in 1946. He stated that if load growth develops as expected and if the year 1952 is dry, thereby requiring high load factor steam operation, the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. would need the equivalent of nearly 25 million barrels of fuel oil. Federal Power Commission reports show that the energy input to the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. system was approximately one billion kilowatt-hours greater in 1947 than in 1946. They also show that the steam plant operating capacity factor in 1946 was approximately 35 pct; in 1947 it, was 72 pct due, probably, to the extreme drought. able 3 shows that Pacific Gas and Electric Co. now has under construction 327,000 kw of hydro capacity which, by 1950, will bring its total hydro generating capacity to 1,313,899 kw. In addition to hydro capacity under construction that company also has 975,000 kw of steam generating capacity under construction, which by 1951 will bring its total steam capacity to 1,560,834 kw. If it is assumed that this total steam electric capacity is operated at a capacity factor of 45 pct, in 1951, over 6 billion kilowatt-hours would be generated. If the load growth on the Pacific Gas and Electric system continues at the current rate of approximately one billion kilowatt-hours per year and if it is assumed that 70 pct of this increase would be generated by steam (30 pct assumed to be generated by hydro facilities with average water conditions), the steam electric production in 1960 would amount to 12 billion kilowatt-hours, which would require fuel the equivalent of 24 million barrels of oil or 6 million tons of coal. Government Projects Inadequate Much has been written with respecl to the plans of the Department of Interior in regard to the installation of hydroelectric plants as a part of multipurpose dams relating to reclamation. flood control, and power generation. An examination of the effect of such plans on the power supply for central and northern California is of interest. The Depart,ment of Interior now has five 73,000 kw units at its Shasta hydro plant on the Sacramento River. It now appears that its three 25,000 kw unit Keswick hydro plant on the same river will be available during the winter of 1949 to 1950. Its estimates show that in a dry year there is sufficient water for operation of Shasta units at an average load factor of 36 pct and Keswick units at a load factor of 41 pct. It is also giving consideration to the development of the Pine Flat and Haas hydroelectric plants on Kings River for generating capacities of 45,000 kw each. Waste waters from mine sites may be screened for all constituents of significance as a first step in establishing water quality criteria for protection of aquatic ecosystems. Inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) offers the capability to screen water samples and digest solutions for virtually all elements in the periodic table. This technique is therefore able to identify elements whose concentrations are elevated in waste waters and may be rarely present in background surface or ground waters. Such elements may be present in waters at only a few ¦g/L. ICP-MS has sufficient sensitivity to detect sub-¦g/L or even ng/L levels of many elements. Waste waters from most mining activities in the Northern Territory have been examined by ICP-MS. The concentration data provide the basis of a contaminant data base. The data can show specific tracers in the ore or mineral itself, subsequently found in waste water. An example is the presence of rhenium in uranium ore. Such trace elements may be present in soluble or insoluble chemical forms and are more useful as indicators when soluble and exemplifying conservative chemical behaviour. The approach described, based on ICP-MS screening of mine site waste waters, together with general physico-chemical variables, provides the most comprehensive means yet available of selecting variables for monitoring programs and ensures that key elements and/or their chemical species are not excluded from monitoring programs.

A pure scandium solution was concentrated from 10-4 mole per liter to 0.5 mole per liter by continuous foam fractionation in a spaced, packed column. Recovery in the foam was 77 percent using a spaced, packed draining column with sodium n-methyl-n-"coconut oil acid" taurate as the surfactant. The technique was first studied batchwise in a small unpacked column to determine the more important variables. Optimum surfactant concentration was found to depend on scandium concentration. Extraction and, in general, enrichment ratios were highest in the 2.5 to 3.5 pH range at temperatures ranging from 50° to 70° C. An airflow rate of 136 ml./min. was satisfactory in the equipment used.

"Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances due to ore changes and equipment malfunctions. One of the challenges faced by the operators is the detection of a disturbance, the identification of its origin and of the action needed to minimize its impact on the process. Hydrocyclones overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes of the units of a nest, surging and internal liner detachment may cause a loss of classification capacity and quality. Recovery losses in downstream leaching or flotation circuits justify the effort in developing techniques for the detection of hydrocyclone malfunction. Two approaches for the detection of hydrocyclone fault are presented in this paper. The first proposed method uses the conventional sensors available in a grinding circuit allowing real time detection of hydrocyclone abnormal operation. The second technique is based on the use of vibration sensors installed on the hydrocyclone of a nest. This last technique enables the classification of the hydrocyclone malfunction as surging, overloading and plugged apex. The two techniques can be combined to increase the robustness of the problem detection.INTRODUCTIONHydrocyclones are used for many purposes ranging from water separation, fines removal and obviously for the preparation of the feed for subsequent concentration circuits in a mineral processing plant. The strategic role of the hydrocyclones for the preparation of the feed to the concentration circuit is often underestimated because of their simplicity of operation and robustness (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; McIvor, 1988). It remains that despite their simplicity, hydrocyclones have been studied extensively from 1970 to 1990 with the objective of developing mathematical models of their operation to be incorporated into grinding circuit simulators (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; Lynch, 1977; Flintoff et al., 1987). Such a development effort is already an acknowledgement of the importance of these units in a mineral processing plant. Several authors (Del Villar et al., 1996; Plitt and Kawatra, 1979; Casali et al., 1998) proposed soft sensors to estimate the classification efficiency of hydrocyclones using sensor measurements. However, few of the proposed sensors are used in the industry. More recently several papers were published to discuss the application of 3-D modelling of the hydrocyclones (Narasimha et al., 2005; Cullivan et al., 2004) and sensors (Bond et al., 1999; Neesse et al., 2003; Hou et al., 1998; Olson and Waterman, 2004; Williams et al., 1995; Willams et al., 1997) to help in the detection of hydrocyclone malfunction."

Background Research on the respiratory health of coal miners has focused predominately on the relationship between coal mine dust exposure and ventilatory function impairment (Lapp et al., 1972; Jacobsen, 1976), on the prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (Lainhart et al., 1969; Morgan et al., 1973), and on coal miner mortality (Ortmeyer et al., 1974; Rockette, 1977). Lesser attention has been paid to the effects of other mining exposures. For example, underground exposure to diesel exhaust emissions (Reger et al., 1980; Ames et al., 1982,1984). An omission in US coal mining research, however, has been identified by the US Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) as the failure to study the effects of inhaled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) thermal decomposition and combustion products (Seltzer, 1979). These products may be released in the mine environment by cable fires, cable explosions, smoldering cables, and conveyor belt fires. In addition to the OTA concern, recent findings of chronic respiratory conditions and other health complications resulting from exposure to PVC decomposition and combustion products in firefighters (Peters et al., 1974; NBS, 1980; NIOSH, 1982; Wallace, 1982), and in survivors of several large scale PVC-fueled fires (Dyer and Esch, 1976; Wallace, 1981, 1982), add immediacy to the concerns. PVC decomposition and combustion PVC decomposition is initiated at temperatures far below ignition (Hartstein and Forshey, 1974; Wallace, 1981). Hence, exposures to decomposition products from smoldering cables may be important health hazards in addition to cable insulation combustion products. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) appears to be the principle toxic substance from the thermal decomposition of PVC since up to 60% by weight is released as HCL (Barrow et al., 1979). HCL is released both as a gas and as an adsorbant on soot particles (Stone et al., 1973), thus allowing penetration of respiratory defenses. In addition, laboratory results indicate that phosgene (carbonyl chloride), a potentially lethal gas, may be produced in significant quantities from electrical arcing of wires covered with PVC insulation (Woolley, 1971; Brown and Birky, 1980). Health concerns related to PVC Toxic effects resulting from high level exposures to PVC pyrolysis and combustion products in animals (Cornish and Abar, 1969) and in humans (Wallace, 1981) is beyond question. Analyses have reported acute, or short-term, health effects resulting from exposure to PVC decomposition and combustion products (Peters et al., 1974; Polakoff et al., 1975). Recently, however, several studies have found that acute effects are often followed first by apparent healing, and then by delayed chronic effects. This pattern of consequential respiratory involvement among persons involved in major PVC-fueled fires has been noted in firefighters, specifically the 1975 New York Telephone Exchange fire (Dyer and Esch, 1976; Wallace, 1982), and the survivors of the 1977 Beverly Hills Supper Club fire (Wallace, 1981). An obstructive syndrome (low FVC and FEV1) was seen in 15% of workers three months following fighting a PVC-fueled fire (Colardyn et al., 1976). Long-term respiratory symptoms seen in studies of survivors of PVC-fueled fires include the bronchitis symptoms of cough and phlegm, and lung dysfunction (Wallace, 1981). Additional support for the thesis of longer-term respiratory effects resulting from PVC-fueled fires is derived from the finding that four persons who initially survived the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire died within nine months of the fire of severe respiratory impairment (Wallace, 1981).

It is hoped that the information presented in these reports will develop sufficient interest among lime- plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the Bureau their own experiences , for it is believed by such an interchange of ideas conclusions will be reached that will be of practical benefit to the entire industry . Much valuable information has been obtained from replies to the papers already issued , but a more general response is greatly desired . It is hoped that many operators will contribute additions to the information on transportation systems now at hand by answering the questions on the final page .

During the last half century major steel industries of the world have become dependent on iron and manganese resources derived from siliceous ironformation sediments. More than two billion years ago vast amounts of iron and manganese were deposited in ironformation sediments on all continents and until recent years their genesis was considered to be a uniquely Precambrian phenomenon. Research work has demonstrated that the origin of the banded ironformations was related to major tectonic features and associated volcanogenic processes that were active throughout geological history. Similar sedimentary-tectonic environments are being explored on the seafloor where metalliferous sediments are forming today. Ironformations are now considered to be a major part of the stratafer group of stratiform metalliferous deposits. They developed in sedimentary basins in areas where deep tectonic fracturing intersected high thermal gradients in the earth?s crust and gave rise to profuse volcanism and the hydrothermal effusive discharge of metals in the vicinity of the volcanic centres. Concepts for the genesis and metamorphism of stratafer deposits as revised in the last half century have had a profound impact in the development of iron ore resources and have had a dramatic impact in the use of metallogenetic concepts for guiding exploration for other mineral resources. They are based on the tectonic history and stratigraphy in the sedimentary basins, the role of hydrothermal volcanogenic processes , as well as environmental and sedimentation factors which influence the deposition of silica, iron , and other metals that were emphasized in the past. Topics of special interest in the genesis of ironformation and stratafer deposits and for guiding mineral exploration are: biomediation in their sedimentation and genesis, the significance of metamorphism in the processing and beneficiation of iron ore and in the genesis of iron ore by natural enrichment processes, syngenetic concentrations of Mn, Ti, Cu. Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, REE, F, Ba, B, As, Hg, W and Au in ironformations and stratafer lithofacies, and the mobilization of gold and other elements by alkaline solutions during diagenesis of ironformation and other stratafer metalliferous sediments.

MR. T. L. McCALL: Planning ahead in coal-mining is essential, but the question may be raised, just how far ahead can we plan. You can overdo it: chat is, you can get in a rut. Never let planning get a hold on you to chat extent. You must be prepared to deal intelligently with any new conditions that arise, and to apply new discoveries. It may become necessary to abandon ? .your plan, make the best you can of the ground you have developed, and start again, with a new plan. So far as the submarine workings of the Dominion Steel and Coal Company are concerned, we cannot know definitely what lies ahead of us under the sea: we must ?base our tentative plans on assumptions, and, as we meet changing conditions, we must change our plans. In the case of inland mines it is possible to bore in advance, and consequently it is generally possible to set out your plans in advance, block out a section of the mine, and develop to obtain a uniform product for a whole year, or perhaps even longer. MR. J. B. MORROW: While planning in coal mining, we must bear in mind chat the consumer also is planning ahead. Some people will tell you that, in ten years time, the demand is going to be all for pulverized co al; others believe that the field for such fuel is limited. Needless to state, planning for a pulverized-coal market is quite a different matter to planning for a general grade, ore stoker, market. In planning, therefore, our endeavour must be to keep a jump ahead of the work being undertaken by the anthracite producers. This year, they are spending about two million dollars-money contributed, not by the Government, but by the industry itself-in the study and promotion of new and improved ways of burning anthracite. For example, they are perfecting small hot-water heaters, and one they have brought out weighs only about ten pounds. I feel that research of this type must be regarded as an essential part of planning in coal mining. We, in the soft-coal industry, are also planning types of more efficient burning equipment and doing other investigational work.

The Ti-Cr-O ternary system has been studied in detail near the titanium-rich corner within the limits of 10 wt pct 0, and 20 wt pct Cr. Studies were extended, but not in detail, to the region beyond 25 wt pct 0, (50 atomic pct) and 62 wt pct Cr (60 atomic pct). Four isothermal sections at 1400°, 1200°, 1000°, and 800°C are presented as well as two vertical sections at 1 and 2 wt pct 02. DURING the last decade much interest has been shown in the development of high strength titanium alloys for high temperature and corrosion resistant applications. Extensive research is being carried out at present, as the current literature indicates, in order to study the properties of titanium and to develop improved alloys. Two of the important alloying elements in commercial titanium alloys are chromium and oxygen and it would be desirable to know their combined influence upon titanium. For this purpose the present work was carried out to investigate the titanium-rich corner of the ternary system TiICr-0. The binary systems Ti-Cr and Ti-0 have been published recently. The Ti-Cr system was studied by several investigators " and their results are in close agreement. The eutectoid decomposition of the B phase has been shown to be extremely sluggish. TiCr, was the only intermetallic compound found in this binary system and was formed at 1350°C by a transformation from the p phase. TiCr? was established as the cubic C 15 (MgCu,) type of structure with 24 atoms per unit cell and was designated as the y phase. This terminology will be adopted in the present work. There was disagreement about the actual composition of this compound among the several investigators, although it is evident from their data that the compound probably has a solubility range of about 2 to 3 pct and is in the vicinity of 65 pct Cr. It has been indicated recently that a high temperature modification of this y phase (TiCr,) existed at a temperature above 1300°C." ' This high temperature modification was identified as a hexagonal C 14 (MgZn,) type of structure with 12 atoms per unit cell. The exact transformation temperature from the high temperature phase to the low temperature phase has not been established. A considerable hysteresis was observed and, due to the sluggishness of this transformation, the high temperature phase often co-existed with the low temperature phase at temperatures below 1300°C. A preliminary study of several Ti-0 compounds and the Ti-0 system had been carried out by Ehr-1ich."-"' The most complete binary Ti-0 system was the one reported recently by Bumps, Kessler, and Hansen." The first intermediate phase found in the system was the 8 phase which formed by a peritec-toid reaction of the phases a and Ti0 at temperatures below 925 °C. This reaction is extremely sluggish. The structure of this 8 phase was tentatively identified by these authors as being tetragonal and the lattice constants were found as c,, - 6.645A, a,, = 5.333A and c/a = 1.246A. Experimental Procedure The raw materials used for this investigation were TiO,, electrolytic chromium, iodide titanium, and sponge titanium. The TiO, was in the form of powder of chemically pure grade (99.8 pct pure). The chemical analysis of the electrolytic chromium was: 0, 0.50 pct; Fe, 0.07; Cu, N, and C, 0.01; and Pb, 0.001. The oxygen in the chromium was calculated as part of the final oxygen content of the alloys. The alloys were prepared by the cold crucible method using a tungsten arc. The entire system was evacuated and flushed with purified helium three times and then filled with helium. Each alloy was melted, turned over, and remelted at least four times to insure homogeneity. The total melting time was generally from 6 to 10 min. A master alloy of 25 pct 0,-75 pct Ti was prepared to facilitate alloying by melting compacts of TiOl powder with either iodide or sponge titanium, yielding the compound TiO. It was found necessary to bake the TiO, powder compact at about 150°C to remove adsorbed moisture. This was done to prevent the disintegration and spattering of the compact when the arc was struck. TiO, powder dissolved quite readily into the melt and no other trouble was encountered.

In situ stope leaching is an innovative mining system that reduces the surface impacts of conventional underground mining. As in any leaching operation, stope leaching requires hydrologic site characterization and control of leaching solutions. Several tracer tests, using sodium chloride (NaCl) in various concentrations, were conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in an underground experimental stope to simulate a leaching environment. The tests were conducted in fractured crystalline rock that was partially saturated. As tests progressed, the surrounding fractures became more saturated. A predominant flow direction away from the stope was found during testing. Testing procedures, preliminary results, and remediation ideas based on field observations are presented in this paper.

Sustainable closure of coal mines in Australia to a safe, stable, non-polluting condition remains one of the industry’s biggest environmental and social challenges. A significant proportion of mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland have dispersive spoil. Based on an estimated area of 20,000ha and a rehabilitation cost of AUD$100,000 to AUD$150,000/ha, the instantaneous rehabilitation liability for the Bowen Basin alone is estimated at AUD$2 to $3 billion.Dispersive spoils present problems in post-mining rehabilitated landforms due to increased potential for surface and tunnel erosion, compromising the ability to achieve fundamental mine closure objectives of a safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining post-mining landform (Minserve, 2004). Dispersion results in clay particles being mobilised and transported in water, even at low flow velocities (So et al., 1998; Minserve, 2004), and blocking of soil pores, resulting in surface sealing, crusting and reduced permeability (DNR, 1997; Vacher et al., 2004) which, in turn, further increases runoff (Dang et al., 2018).CITATION:Dale, G, Reardon-Smith, K, Thomas, E, Bennett, J, McCallum, L and Raine, S, 2018. The effect of various flotation depressants and surface treatments on the floatability of coal derived pyrites in the presence of XIBC was investigated with a modified Hallimond tube microflotation cell. The floatability of pyrite particles which had been cleaned with hot dilute (5%) hydrochloric acid was relatively large. However, the floatability of such particles was reduced greatly by the addition of specific depressants such as calcium hydroxide and also by treating the pyrite with an aerated warm alkaline solution. Although this treatment and these depressants also had some effect on the floatability of coal particles, the effect was much less than on the pyrite particles.

The Division is concerned with physical methods as applied to geo-logical research and mapping. An at-tempt is made to describe long-term goals, illustrated by examples of projects in the fields of aeromagnetic interpretation, palaeomagnetic re-search, Pleistocene and groundwater geophysics, seismic surveying, electromagnetic research and instrument development. Cooperative projects in surveys and research, with universities, private companies and provincial organizations, are frequently undertaken. An outstanding example of this is the recently approved Federal-Provincial Aeromagnetic Survey Plan, the purpose of which is discussed both from an economic and a scientific point of view. However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. THE Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140° 06' N., Long. 86° 36' W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Teguci-galpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle P. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 lb. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo service. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced.

The electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) production through electrodeposition from manganese nodules by reduction leaching in H2SO4 medium using sucrose as reductant followed by purification through 2-stage precipitation methods is described. The purified leach liquor was the starting solution for electrodeposition. Influence of in situ addition of a cationic surfactant Cetyltri-methylammonium bromide (CTAB) (0–500 mg dm −3) on the surface morphology and electrochemical properties of the EMD was examined. The XRD patterns of the deposited material were indexed to the c-MnO2 phase. FESEM results demonstrated that in the presence of CTAB uniform nanofibrous type grains were formed. Higher concentration of CTAB in the electrolytic bath however, drastically decreased the current efficiency (CE) and increased the energy consumption (EC) during electrodeposition. Under the optimum CTAB concentration of 100 mg dm −3 the obtained CE and EC values were 87.64% and 1.70 kWh/Kg respectively.

An innovative hybrid technology for beneficiation of difficult-to-process sedimentary copper ores comprising acidic leaching stage of the feed combined with subsequent flotation has been presented. Acidic leaching, preceding the flotation process, plays a beneficial role of efficient chemical grinding for liberation of copper sulphide minerals finely disseminated in the copper-bearing carbonate-shale rocks. The process was applied on a fully industrial scale. Flotation results were analysed for both chemically modified and unmodified flotation feeds. After several months of industrial scale operation, it was found that both metals recovery and concentrate grade remarkably increased as a result of application of chemical modification of the flotation feed. Beneficial effects of chemical pre-treatment of flotation middlings on selectivity at a comparable concentrate yield in industrial flotation scale, revealed a considerable increase of the total copper recovery by 3.5percent. Based on the industrial and laboratory investigations we consider a further development of the process and introduction of hydrometallurgy for better recovering of metals from low-grade copper concentrates
