New developments are taking place in the recovery of gold from leached pulps that are based upon the adsorption of the metal cyanide species onto ion exchange resins. Despite the success of several resin-in-pulp pilot plant operations in the Western World and large-scale plants in the former Soviet Union, the process is yet to gain recognition as a viable alternative to the carbon-in-pulp process. An experimental research program has investigated the use of a variety of different types of resins for the recovery of gold, but to-date no resin studied has the desired properties of high selective loading capacity for gold cyanide and a simple inexpensive elution procedure. In addition very little is known concerning the physical strength of resins and their ability to resist shattering due to osmotic shock during cycles of adsorption and elution. The ability of ion exchange resins to enhance the leaching of refractory and re-adsorbing ores has not been investigated. This paper highlights the necessary factors that need to be addressed before commercialisation of ion exchange technology for gold extraction is feasible.

Rock stress measurement is cast in the more general context of the determination of boundary conditions for rock engineering. A study on the effect of elastic anisotropy on underground excavations reveals that this effect is actually controlled by the imposed boundary conditions. Applications to tunneling and to the Underground Research Laboratory (URL), Canada, exemplify a procedure for boundary condition estimation formerly developed by the authors. The procedure displayed fast convergence despite the complex geometry, and the high degree of non-linearity of the models. In the URL application, the 3-D model was able to completely reproduce the complex measured stress pattern, and the 90° rotation of the principal in situ stresses with depth. In order to reliably estimate the boundary conditions reproducing the current in situ state of stress, response measurements of the rock mass to current disturbances are necessary as input data. La mesure des contraintes in situ tombe dans le domaine général de la détermination des conditions aux limites pour les problèmes de mécanique des roches. Une étude sur le rôle de l’anisotropie élastique sur les excavations souterraines montre que ce rôle est contrôlé par les conditions aux limites qui sont imposées. L’application aux tunnels et au Laboratoire Souterrain de Recherche (URL) au Canada, nous permet de présenter une méthode de détermination des conditions aux limites. La méthode converge rapidement bien que le géométrie soit complexe et que le problème soit non-linéaire. Pour le URL, le modèle 3D est capable de reproduire la distribution des contraintes qui ont été mesurées ainsi que la rotation de 90 degrés des contraintes in situ avec la profondeur. Afin de déterminer avec précision les conditions aux limites responsables pour la distribution actuelle des contraintes, la réponse du massif rocheux doit être connue et mesurée. In der Felsentechnik sind die Spannungsmessungen in Gestein an die Bestimmung der Randbedingungen gebunden. Eine Studie legt dar, dass der Effekt elastischer Anisotropie in unterirdischen Aushoehlungen von den Randbedingungen kontrolliert ist. Eine von den Authoren entwickelte Methode zur Bestimmung der Randbedingungen wird an Beispielen im Tunnelbau und im Underground Research Laboratory (URL) in Kanada illustriert. Auch bei komplexer Geometrie und einem hohen Grad an Nicht-Linearitaet zeigt diese Methode ein schnelles Konvergenzverhalten. Ein 3D-Model und dessen 90° Drehung der lokalen Hauptspannungen mit der Tiefe, kann bei einer URL Anwendung vollstaendig reproduziert werden. Um mit dieser Methode die Randbedingungen zuverlaessig abschaetzen zu koennen, werden der gegenwaertige lokale Spannungszustand sowie die Antwort des Gesteins und die resultierenden Stoerungen als Eingabedaten benoetigt.

Calcium ferrite slags are often associated with Professor Yazawa due to his pioneering work on the thermodynamics of this type of melts. Over the past years CSIRO has invested some effort in studying physico-chemical properties of such melts to fill in some gaps in our knowledge and explore opportunities for application of the understanding developed. These investigations cover thermodynamics, transport properties of calcium ferrite based slags, as well as the kinetics of reactions of such slags with refractories. The present paper provides an overview of some of these studies and highlights some of the interesting behavior of such melts, The oxidation state of copper and arsenic in calcium ferrite based slags are predominantly Cu+ and As3+, respectively, at oxygen potentials below 10-7 atm. The concentration of CU2+ in such slags becomes significant at oxygen potentials of greater than 10-7 atm at 1300 °C. The activities of CuO0.5 and AsO1.5 in calcium ferrite slags show strong deviations from the Raoultian Law, while that of CoO is very close to ideal behaviour with respect to pure solid CoO. Addition of SiO2 to calcium ferrite slags can have significant effects on the activities of FeO and Fe2O3 and hence the stability of magnetite phase. Transfer of oxygen in calcium ferrite slags is fast with diffusivity of 2x 103 cm2/s at 1350 °C and activation energy of 16 kcal/mol. Presence of solid phases, such as magnetite, has pronounced effect on the viscosity of calcium ferrite slags. The observed dependence on solid loading and shear rate indicates deviation from Newtonian behaviour. The interfacial tension between copper mattes and calcium ferrite slags is strongly dependent on the matte grade, with the determined values being much lower than the corresponding ones for interfacial tension between similar mattes and iron silicate slags. MgO, Cr2O3 and MgCr2O4 have low solubility in calcium ferrite slags and their solubility increases with increasing copper oxide content of the slag at 1300°C. The oxidation state of the slag has strong effects on phase transformation, dissolution rate and disintegration of refractories in calcium ferrite slags. This study investigates the use of a horizontally- baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feedrate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

Expansive soil formations can be found throughout the United States. When subjected to wetting, these formations have the potential to swell and exert large uplift forces on buildings and foundations. Lightly loaded structures, such as single family residences founded in areas of expansive soils, can be significantly damaged due to uplift movement from swelling actions. Designing an economical deep foundation that can resist uplift forces is critical to prevent damage to these structures. The current solutions to control uplift due to swelling soils, such as over-excavation and replacement of the expansive material or the use of drilled shafts can be costly. Piles made from recycled polymer materials could provide a solution. Due to a lower coefficient of friction along the interface of the soil-pile interface compared to traditional pile materials, solid recycled plastic piles can allow expansive soils to move nearly independently from the pile when wetted. This results in a much smaller magnitude of uplift force being transferred to the structure, which minimizes the risk of significant structural damage from excessive movements. This paper presents the results of research conducted on the use of recycled plastic piles in an expansive shale environment. The preliminary phase of the project involved the installation of six recycled plastic piles at a test site on the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology campus. Two of the piles were subjected to a full-scale compression load test in order to determine ultimate capacity. The remaining four piles were subjected to long-term monitoring of uplift movement during the course of the project. A concrete anchor was also installed at the test site for uplift monitoring. Data gathered during the field and laboratory testing was utilized in a non-linear soil-structure interaction model to predict the displacement behavior and internal stresses within a plastic pile and concrete anchor subjected to uplift forces from the swelling shale. While more research is needed to further understand the application for recycled plastic piles, the results from this research indicate that their use is a viable alternative for support of lightly loaded structures in expansive soil environments.

The Melbourne City Link Project has two tunnels, the Domain and Burnley Tunnels, which have been constructed by Transfield Obayashi Joint Venture (TOJV) under a design and construct contract. The two tunnels are located essentially under the Kings Domain, the Yarra River and, in the case of the longer Burnley Tunnel, under the inner suburb of Richmond. The Burnley Tunnel is 3.5 km long and reaches a depth of 65 m at the central Swan Street Shaft, the invert being at RL -60 m. The Domain Tunnel is 1.6 km long, with the invert reaching RL -20. The tunnels were driven, for the most part, in the siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian Age Melbourne Formation. Construction aspects of the driven tunnels as related to the engineering geology have been described by Hutchison et al (1998). The Silurian bedrock is a fractured rock aquifer that is connected to overlying alluvial aquifers. Excavation of the tunnels allowed temporary groundwater inflows which substantially de-pressurised portions of the various aquifers. This de-pressurisation provided the potential to accelerate on-going secondary consolidation rates of the Holocene Aged Coode Island Silt (CIS) and the older Quaternary Fishermens Bend Silt (FBS) deposits, in areas where these materials directly overly the aquifers. As a large portion of the urban area of South Melbourne and the old river course of the Yarra River contain extensive CIS deposits, and were within the drawdown influence of the tunnels, the management of the hydrogeological regime was very important. The permanent design of the tunnels comprised drained and undrained sections (a partially tanked design) which, along with some permanent recharge, provide long-term protection against the possibility of accelerated settlement rates. During construction TOJV implemented a comprehensive groundwater management plan to deal with issues related to the temporary drawdown of the aquifers and the temporary acceleration of settlement. This paper describes the hydrogeological regime, the effects of the tunnelling, the monitoring programs, the extensive temporary recharge system, and the consultation program that TOJV utilised to manage the hydrogeological issues.

This paper describes the evaluation method of dispersion and coagulation of silica nano-particles by means of interactive force apparatus. The apparatus measures the size of fine particles in aqueous solution or organic solvent of high concentration and/or low optical transparency. Other conventional apparatus for size measurements (such as, apparatus utilizing dynamic light scattering) are difficult to measure the size of particles in such conditions accurately, due to multi-scattering of light in the sample solution or solvent. The apparatus measures the interactive force between two surfaces, i.e. the gold-coated glass hemisphere and the brass flat plate, (which is fixed at the bottom of the sample cell). The apparatus has three parts, i.e. main part (which consists of electric balance, hemisphere and flat plate), control part (i.e. personal computer, piezo-stage controller and voltage supplier), and detecting part (i.e. multi-meter and oscilloscope). During the measurement, electric field is applied between the hemisphere and flat plate, and thus dielectric particles are arranged toward the direction of electric field in the area between two plates. When the two plates are close to each other, two different forces (i.e. repulsive force and attractive force) will alternately act on particles due to the structure change of the particles. The repulsive force occurs when the structure of particles is stretched by compressive force; whereas the attractive force occurs when the aggregate structure is broken. The cycle of the repulsive and attractive forces is a primary size of particle or size of aggregate, which depends on the degree of agglomeration. The measured size of particles, which is varied depending on their degree of dispersion and coagulation, determined the characteristics of the silica particles. In this research work, the effect of size and concentration of particles in aqueous solution on the degree of dispersion and coagulation of the silica particles were investigated. Spherical silica particles were selected for this investigation due to their variety of size. This apparatus can be used to evaluate the degree of dispersion and coagulation of other nano-particles in various solvents in many process industries.

"An innovative process for removing copper cyanide complexes including silver and zinc from cyanidation circuits has been developed. The technology was based on the inducing the nucleated precipitation of copper and silver in a tube serpentine reactor, using sodium sulfide as the precipitate and sulfuric acid as pH control. The results showed that pH had a great effect on copper cyanide removal efficiency and the optimum pH was about 3 to 3.5. At this pH value copper cyanide removal efficiency could be achieved above 97 and 99 % ,when influent copper concentration ions were 650 and 900 ppm respectively. In this process (sulphidizaton-acidification-recycle-thickening), the cyanide associated with the copper cyanide complexes is released as HCN gas under weakly acidic conditions, allowing it to be recycled back to the cyanidation process as free cyanide. This system was successfully commercial applied at Minera William in Mexico.IntroductionThe recovery of gold and silver from minerals and concentrates with cyanide is an important hydrometallurgical process, which has been studied for more than 124 years. Patented by MacArthur in 1888 [1], the process relies on the fact that gold dissolves in aerated cyanide solutions to produce the gold cyanide complex. The stoichiometry by wich this reaction occurs is known as the Elsner equation as shown here. Silver is accomplished in the same fashion."

The study of the possibility of effecting a lower cost in the manufacture of pig iron reveals the importance of the ever present question of slag chemistry and volume. Factors that determine slag chemistry and volume are the impurities in the ore available, the ash-sulphur content of the coke, and a flux material necessary to promote removal of sulphur. Of these, the ores present by far the major source of impurities and what may prove to be the lowest practical slag volume with desired chemistry in one locality may be considered low or high in some other center of iron manufacture. The Chicago district is not only blessed with ores of high quality, but with excellent coke and flux materials as well. It is the intent of this paper to discuss slag problems at the South Works only, where burdens consist of Mesabi ores, Michigan stone, and coke ranging from 7 to 9 per cent ash and containing an average of 0.57 per cent sulphur. Early in the development of modern blast-furnace practice, the consideration of slags was secondary to the many adjustments of mechanical difficulties, such as furnace lines, stock distribution, stove design for obtaining higher blast temperatures, improved chemical segregation and size of raw materials. Furnace operators, after making these improvements, turned their attention to the study of other refinements in practice, of which slag chemistry appeared to be the most important. It is only within the last two decades that operators have become familiar with the various aspects of slag compositions. The industry, while rather slow in its recognition, is indebted to such investigators as Rankin,1 Wright,1 Feild,2 Royster,2 McCaffery,3 Kinney,4 Holbrook,5 and Joseph,5 whose researches concerning the elimination of sulphur within the blast furnace and the effect of slag composition upon melting point, viscosity, and desulphurizing power have established criteria for the selection of slags of the requisite quality. A commercial enargite concentrate was mechanically milled in inert and oxidising atmospheres for 10 hours. No substantial effect was observed in either an inert atmosphere or in air other than a broadening and weakening of the diffraction peaks. Milling dry in oxygen or wet in air was dramatic with a significant reaction occurring which formed arsenolite, As2O3 and CuSO4.5H2O, both of which are readily soluble.A small amount of SO2 was also formed. Dissolution in acid left CuS as the major phase implying incomplete oxidation. The small fraction of tennantite in the sample was comparatively resistant to oxidation.

Ventilation 'is currently used in mines to sustain human life, prevent explosions, and provide a more healthful work place. Future automated-mining systems could use ventilation techniques quite. different from today's practices. The Bureau of Mines is anticipating various methodologies for ventilating the automated mining systems which are now beginning to emerge in the mining industry. This paper examines the special ventilation requirements for automated mining systems. Topics include requirements for automated systems, current studies with blowup ventilation tubing, and ventilation of two types of highwall -ripper type mining machines.

The test work was done in two parts. In Part I, five 6 x 16 mesh activated coconut shell carbon samples made by four different manufacturers were evaluated as to their gold loading rate and total gold loading. The five carbon samples tested are not identified by manufacturer and are simply designated as Types A through E. Then from the carbons tested, a suitable highly active carbon was selected for subsequent studies on impurity effects upon loading, Part II. Test Procedures The procedures and tests descriptions are given for the ultimate gold carbon loading tests and the dynamic gold carbon loading tests.

LIMESTONE, as a name, covers a great variety of stone consisting of varying amounts of calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and impurities such as silica, alumina, and sulphate of lime. In the iron and steel industry, limestone is roughly divided into two classes, namely Calcite, when the magnesium carbonate content is below 10 per cent, and Dolomite, when the magnesium carbonate is over 10 per cent. In practically all metallurgical melting, the quality of the finished product is related to the character of the slag, and limestone is used as a flux to achieve the proper analysis and consistency. The function of the slag is to absorb the undesired elements of the bath and also to act as a protective cover over the metal. The carbonates of calcium and magnesium are the effective agents in fluxing, and the silica, alumina, sulphur, and other foreign matter are objectionable impurities which should be as low as possible, totalling not over S per cent and preferably below 3 per cent, since all of these so-called impurities must be fluxed by the lime and magnesia of the stone. When the lime and magnesia of the stone have to be used to flux its own impurities, there is that much less of these two oxides left for fluxing the impurities from the balance of the charge, and, as a result, more lime-stone must be used than is desirable with good practice.

The number and the type of trucks and shovels are two important factors in determining the optimal design parameters of an open-pit mining system. Characteristics of trucks' arrival and service-time distributions determine the performance measures of a truck-shovel system when it is modeled as a closed queuing network. In all of the previous analytical queuing studies of truck-shovel systems, trucks are assumed to be identical with respect to their arrival and service-time distributions. This assumption, although desirable for reducing computational difficulties, causes either underestimation or overestimation of the performance measures depending on the number and type of equipment used in the model. The relative error in performance measures could be significant when the number of different types of trucks and shovels is large. In this paper an analytical method is proposed to model the truck-shovel system as a multiple-chain closed queuing network. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures for planning purposes when the truck fleet is not necessarily composed of identical trucks. An example of truck-shovel systems is discussed to show how the incorporation of different types of trucks does affect performance measures.

After the discovery of the rare-earth mineral deposit in the Clark Mountain area near Mountain Pass, San Bernardino County, Calif., two samples wore obtained through the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines for investigation of possible method of concentration. Three other samples were received later from different locations in the same area. The rare-earth mineral in this ore had been identified by E. T. Schonk as bastnaesite, a fluocarbonate of the rare-earth metals containing cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, thorium, uranium, etc. Associated with the bastnaesite were barite, silica, and some calcite. The bastnaesite contained a small amount of iron as a coloration and some manganese. Twenty to fifty percent of the weight of the samples studied was bastnaesite, or ten to twenty-five percent total rare-earth oxides; about half was cerium oxide. Apparently, none of this mineral occurred in pure form. Even the highest-grade particles 'wore contaminated by fine, interlocked grains of barite, calcite, and silica; barite contamination predominated, and the barite was interlocked with varying amounts of bastnaesite. While the specific gravities of pure bastnaesite and barite (approximately 5.0 and 4.50 respectively) differ enough to allow separation by gravity, the interlocking of the minerals nullified this difference. Consequently, only a partial separation could be made by gravity concentration. The extremely fine grained texture of most of the ore prevented grinding to a size that would make concentration by flotation practicable; a partial separation of barite by this means was effected.

"The petrology and mineralogy of porphyry copper deposits are thoroughly described in recent literature and cited as the definitive characteristics for this type of deposit. The magmatic-hydrothermal aspect of genesis is also dealt with in detail. However, descriptions of their internal structure and regional setting are not as rigorous, and the genesis of this structure is simply stated as the release of high fluid pressures in a cooling magma emplaced along large fault zones. Genetic relationships between internal structure, regional setting and the tectonic evolution of continents has been alluded to infrequently in the past, but can now be considered together within the developing concept of orogeny at the margins of drifting crustal plates.Tensional structures, on both local and regional scale, and a Triassic to Tertiary age are described for porphyry copper deposits. We contend that such structure and age are distinct and unifying characteristics for this type of deposit and are genetically related to major crustal movements. British Columbia has porphyry copper deposits contemporaneous with plutons 180 to 200 million years old and 40 to 60 million years old. The former age group correlates with early stages of the continent's westward drift, and the latter group with a change in tectonic style during late development of the Canadian Cordillera. Hence, one can in British Columbia reflect on the genesis of a deposit's structure in the broader context of tectonic evolution. Such consideration should lead to more definitive criteria for area selection in exploration."

THE supercooling behavior of pure liquid metal droplets has been described.' The solidification behavior of small droplets of Cu-Ni alloys as a function of composition is described herein. The Cu-Ni system is of interest for such an investigation because the components are miscible in all proportions in both the liquid and solid state and the phase diagram of the system, Fig. 1, is a type often encountered in metal systems. It was noted by Van Riemsdyk2 and others that the nature of the "blick" of gold droplets during assaying is not perceptibly affected by the content of the platinum group metals that are soluble in both liquid and solid gold. With the exception of these very qualitative observations there appear to have been no prior investigations of the supercooling of alloy droplets. A series of nine alloys varying in composition by 10 pct (nominal weight) steps was made using certified OFHC copper, 99.996 pct purity, obtained from the American Brass Co., and electrolytic nickel pellets, 99.92 pct purity, obtained from the International Nickel Co. The alloys were melted and cast in vacuo in a high frequency induction furnace. Segregation was minimized by chill casting into 1-in. diam steel molds. Each alloy rod was homogenized at a temperature 50°C lower than the solidus for 100 hr in dry hydrogen. Samples for solidification experiments and chemical analysis were machined from the same portion of each rod and at a depth of in. from the rod surface. A Car-boloy tool was used in taking turnings to minimize contamination of sample by the cutting tool. As a check, a number of samples for microscopic observation were chipped from the ingot with a fragment of pyrex glass. The resultant data in all cases agreed, within experimental error, with the data obtained from machined turnings. A number of small particles, 30 to 50 micron diam, of a Cu-Ni alloy were placed in a quartz vial 1/32 in. diam x % in. long. This was inserted into a platinum ribbon heater and mounted in a high temperature microscope stage. The general procedure followed in inserting samples into the stage and measuring the temperature of melting and solidification was the same as described in an earlier paper.' A chromel-alumel thermocouple was used to study alloys of 88.93 pct Cu, 80.62 pct Cu, and 72.27 pct Cu. A platinum-10 pct rhodium thermocouple was used for the remainder of the alloys. Procedure The assembled high temperature microscope stage was first evacuated and the sample given a 2 min in situ treatment at 900 °C in dry hydrogen to remove surface oxides which might otherwise catalyze crystal nucleation. After this treatment the atmosphere was changed to purified helium and melting and solidification were observed microscopically. It was not possible to determine the solidus with certainty. However, the liquidus temperature was measured very accurately since the surface of the particle changed in appearance from coarse and uneven to smooth, mirror-like within a few degrees. The visually determined liquidus temperature was checked by finding the highest temperature to which the particle could be heated such that it did not supercool upon lowering the temperature. This temperature which checked within experimental error with that found by observing surface change was assumed to be characteristic of the thermody-namic liquidus. In order to minimize the effect of selective evaporation of copper from the alloy, samples were changed frequently and the droplets were heated no more than 50 °C in excess of the liquidus temperature T,. When the latter conditions were fulfilled, T, values were reproducible. After melting, the temperature was decreased slowly until the particles solidified. THE immediate vicinity of the sea-shore, affording special facility for the exportation of ores, makes it possible to work certain mines in the Vladivostok district, which, in more remote places of Siberia, would remain unproductive. Outside of the city of Vladivostok the population is small and the country is very little prospected. Additional discoveries of valuable deposits like the large body of calamine which has recently been opened in the neighborhood of earlier worked lead-silver ores, in the Tetiuhe valley, are still in the field of possibilities. For many years gold alone was produced, in part from the coastal rivers and in part from a quartz-vein on Askold island near Vladivostok. But the production is diminishing, and prospectors are looking for other rivers in the interior, such as the tributaries of the Ussuri. These rivers are now more accessible than formerly, due to the slow but gradual development, of colonization by the Russian peasants. The few natives of the country, called Orodjones, are of the Chinese race. They resemble the North American Indian and are hardy fur-hunters. They have given some attention to placers and have already shown good specimens of gold-dust from the rivers Iman, Bikin, Noto, etc. Coal-mining was begun in the Vladivostok region more than 20 years ago, but in a somewhat irregular way. The industry is not as yet important and the best coal-seams are badly prospected, or ire even neglected. Copper, lead, and iron exist in several places. The amounts give some encouragement to the anticipation that the discoveries will give rise to important metallurgical works. I here present a review of the various deposits, based upon such safe information as is in hand, when I have not drawn upon my personal observations. Blasters are usually strictly liable for injury or damage caused by flyrock (trespassory invasion) and blast-induced vibrations (non-trespassory invasion). The application of strict liability to non-trespassory invasions has resulted in significant litigation that has hampered the use of blasting and the blasting industry. Stark (2002) proposes that blasters should not be held strictly liable for non-trespassory invasions but should be liable only if their conduct is proven to be negligent. This change in legal standard was proposed because improvements in blasting technology over the last thirty years allow blasting to be conducted without substantial risk of harm to property and thus the amount of harm imposed by a blast can be related to the level of care exercised by the blaster. It is anticipated that negligence standard will reduce the amount of litigation because a plaintiff will have a greater burden to overcome. To facilitate the acceptance of negligence standard by a court of law, this paper illustrates the application of the negligence and strict tort liability frameworks using actual cases in which a decision was rendered. It is evident from these cases that some of the successful claims under the strict liability framework would not have been successful, and probably not litigated, under a negligence framework, which could result in substantial cost savings to the blasting industry and consumers.
