Various factors that control the natural flotability of talc, including differences due to crystal face and edge effects, were delineated. For study of talc depression phenomena, dextrin was used as a model depressant. For the enhancement of talc flotation, dodecylammonium acetate (DDAA) was used as the collector. The interaction of DDAA with talc was assessed by flotation experiments and electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements, from which the role of hydrophobic bonding can be demonstrated. The results presented in this paper provide useful information on how the crystal chemistry and surface chemistry control the electrical double layer, adsorption phenomena, wettability, and flotation behavior of talc in aqueous media.

THIS paper is a brief discussion of the past and present methods employed by the Huntington Works of The International Nickel Co., Inc., in the production of nickel and high nickel alloy seamless tubing. The various operations for both hot and cold processing will be considered in their natural sequence, together with the processing characteristics of the high nickel alloys and some descriptions of the equipment used. The tools and lubricants currently in use will be described. This discussion will relate primarily to nickel, Monel,† and Inconel,† since these are the most common of the many alloys processed into tubing at the Huntington Works. The nominal compositions of the materials are shown in Table I. CONVERSION FROM SOLID BILLETS TO TUBE SHELLS History The commercial production of seamless nickel and high nickel alloy tube shells is a comparatively recent development, the first nickel shells having been produced in 1922, Monel in 1930, and Inconel in 1931 on rotary-type piercing mills. Rolled or forged billets, ranging from 3 ½ - to 7 ½ in. diam, were pierced to produce shells ranging' in size from 4 3/8 in. OD X 0.180 in. wall to 8 3/8 in. OD X 1.0 in. wall. After piercing, the shells. were further processed by hot rolling, reeling, and sizing. Subsequent to these operations the shells were either supplied to the trade as "hot finished" tubes, or were processed by cold drawing to smaller sizes at the Huntington Works of the International Nickel Co. The extrusion of nickel and high nickel alloys also may be classed as a relative newcomer to the field of hot-forming methods, for it was not until 1928 that the commercial extrusion of these alloys was begun on a 600 long ton vertical extrusion press installed at Zenith Works of Henry Wiggin and Co., Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland. This press did considerable pioneer work and the results were so favorable that in 1937 a -2200 long ton horizontal press was installed. The quality of the inside surface of the tubing produced on this press was superior to that produced by piercing on a rotary-type mill and, as a result of this experience, a 4000 ton horizontal extrusion press was installed at the Huntington Works in 1943. Billet Preparation The first step in the extrusion, process is the selection of ingots with good hot malleability, as indicated by the test described by Martin and Bieber.1 Ingots then are forged into rough rounds which are machined to the desired billet diameter on a "bar peeler." This machine consists of a rotary head which carries the cutting tools and is driven by a 200 hp, dc motor. The feed mechanism consists of hydraulically driven input and output carriages on the respective sides of the cutter head. This study aims to evaluate the effect of specimen preparation on the dry sliding wear behavior of CA-6 NM stainless steel. Two different surface finishing manufacturing processes were applied: lapping and metallographic polishing. The wear tests were conducted in reciprocating ball-on-flat system, performed for two loads: 5 or 8 N. For all test conditions, hardmetal ball was employed as counterbody. The surfaces were evaluated using 3D interferometry technique to determine their surface roughness, including texture analysis regarding isotropy. Surface characterization results indicated the presence of texturing and preferential orientation, since the parameter Str was smaller than 0.5 for samples of both the studied conditions. Two distinct levels of isotropy evaluated through Str parameter were achieved: 0.13 for lapping and 0.3 for metallographic polishing process. It is clear from wear tests that the variation of average surface roughness is the key point for tribological behavior of CA-6 NM stainless steel.

The U.s. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the utilization and design of mine roof support systems. This report describes methods to evaluate resultant loading on longwall shields, defined as external resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy and base. Four models are considered: two rigid-body models, an elastic model, and a numerical model. The rigid-body models equate measured internal shield forces to unknown external resultant shield forces (loads) through rigid-body analysis of static equilibrium requirements. The elastic model develops a solution to shield mechanics by evaluation of the load-displacement relationship and stiffness characteristics of the support structure. The numerical model is a two-dimensional finite-element representation of a shield structure. Model determination of resultant shield loading is compared to controlled loading of a shield in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Parameters investigated are shield height, canopy contact configuration, canopy and base horizontal constrainment, and boundary conditions imposed by vertical and horizontal shield displacements. It is concluded that rigid-body models are most applicable to in situ measurement of shield loading. Applications requirements and potential error sources are discussed.

Two alternative processes for the manufacturing of zircon products were investigated by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa). These were the synthesis of doped-zircon pigments from plasma dissociated zircon, and an upgrading process to convert an inferior grade of zircon into a superior opacifier for ceramic applications. A solid-state reaction process was used to produce doped-zircon pigments. The influence on the colour intensity of the pigments on a ceramic tile were compared for milled and un-milled plasma dissociated zircon (PDZ) material, prior to calcination. Pr-yellow and V-blue zircon pigments produced from PDZ with different degrees of dissociation, were also evaluated. The second zircon beneficiation process entails the upgrading of an inferior grade of zircon to a superior opacifier for ceramic applications. A calcining process in the presence of mineralizers was used to produce the product in a conventional muffle furnace. A pre-milled inferior grade zircon concentrate, with a relatively high iron and alumina content generally not suitable for high quality ceramic applications, was used in this study. The influence of the upgrading process on the opacifying properties of the zircon material was compared to that of commercially available prime grade zircon opacifier products currently being produced in South Africa. The influence of a calcining step in the presence of mineralizers with regard to the milling characteristics of the treated zircon material was also evaluated.

The need for a better understanding of the heap biooxidation pretreatment of pyritic refractory gold ores has prompted us to develop a rigorous mathematical model of the process. The hydrological structure of the model takes the form of lateral stagnant pores in contact with a uniformly distributed gas stream and connected to vertical plug flow channels, as suggested by the results of an independent study of column hydrology. A model of pyrite oxidation kinetics was derived based on electrochemical leaching theory and the results of potentiostatic stirred tank and column tests. The growth rates of attached and planktonic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing cells are modeled with separate Monod expressions over three separate temperature ranges corresponding to mesophiles, moderate thermophiles, and extreme thermophiles. Isothermal column tests validate the model simulations. Excellent fits of several leaching indicators (potential, extent of sulfide oxidation, iron concentration, cell numbers) reveal the rate-limiting step to shift from particle kinetics to oxygen gas/liquid mass transfer with increasing temperatures and pyrite head grades. Competition for oxygen between sulfur- and iron-oxidizing microorganisms lowers potentials and slows down pyrite oxidation. This modeling tool may assist engineers in the design and operation of heaps to give more complete gold liberation in a shorter time.

The discussion will highlight the implementation of the Codes to date, risk management principles embodied in the Codes and the use of risk registers as a projectmanagement tool and the management of risk.

"The adoption of high-pressure grinding throughout the cement industry has yielded enormous savings in energy and wear material costs. There are also a number of installations, which are applied in iron ore and kimberlite processing operations. High pressure grinding offers the same potential for energy and media savings, as well as opportunities for improved, downstream metallurgical performance, in hard rock mineral processing. This paper focuses on developments in machine design and wear surface engineering for high-pressure grinding of the hard rock ores in the mineral processing industry.INTRODUCTIONIn the early eighties 3.4 % of the world electric energy was consumed for crushing and grinding operations of minerals and 0.6 % in the ore dressing industry. During that time using a laboratory press Prof. Schönert found that interparticle comminution at high pressure requires remarkably less energy as conventional grinding technologies. In grinding of cement clinker he expected energy savings between 33 and 50 % compared to ball mills [1]. Piston presses are limited in throughput. Thus, the principle of interparticle comminution was adapted by the use of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) to a continuous plant process. Figure 1 shows the main components of a roller press: The roller nip of width s is formed between the floating roller (1) and the fixed roller (2). The diameter of the rolls will be denoted with D, the width with B. The total press force F can be adjusted using a hydraulic system with two or four pistons (3). Without insulation we could not survive on this planet. This may sound like a self-serving statement but it is a fact. The blanket of air which surrounds us is a very effective insulating blanket, allowing some shortwave solar radiation to warm us during the day while retaining the longer infrared radiation at night. Our life on earth is very much dependent on materials performing an insulating function without being thought of as insulation, clothing, fur, window glass, the ice of an igloo etc. The mechanisms of heat transfer involved in these materials are analogous to those involved in engineered insulations - Engineered insulations are designed for maximum effectiveness for given conditions within the applicable retraints. Engineered insulations are very effective! As an illustration let us consider this graph (Figure 1). It represents: 1. The radiative heat transfer between two 1 foot2 (0.0932) radiantly black surfaces, one at 100F (38C) and the other at the temperature indicated on the bottom scale. This does not include the convective and conductive heat flow of the air, both of which are significant but small in comparison. 2. The heat transfer resulting from the placement of 1 inch (25.4 mm) of insulation [10 pcf (160 kg/m3) ceramic fiber] between these two plates.

Cyprus Pima Mining Company is located in the Mineral Hill District of southern Arizona, approximately 22 miles south-southeast of Tucson. Cyprus Pima Mining Company is owned 50.01% by Cyprus Mines Corporation, 24.99% by Utah International Incorporated, and 25% by Union Oil Company of California, with Cyprus having the management responsibility. Cyprus Pima's history has been one of continued expansion from an initial plant of 3,000 TPD in 1957; 6,000 TPD in 1963; 18,000 TPD in 1966; 36,000 TPD in 1967; and 53,500 TPD in 1972. The major reason for Expansion IV was that a large volume of low-grade ore had to be moved to get at a higher grade ore in the course of proper pit development. With mining costs already defrayed, this relatively hard, low-grade material became economically profitable for subsequent milling and concentrating treatment. Similar material previously stockpiled was available for ore treatment. In an effort to meet the continuing search for lower unit costs, the largest milling and concentrating equipment had to be examined. The management of Cyprus Pima Mining Company began investigating autogenous, and semi-autogenous milling in 1964 when two carloads of ore selected from the Cyprus Pima pit were sent to the Koppers--Hardinge Operation at York, Pennsylvania for testing. One car contained approximately 40 tons of hard arkosite and the other contained approximately 40 tons of ore classified as soft Hornfels. The purpose of the testing was to determine the amenability of both ore types to autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding.

This paper summarises the findings of 27 model-scale bench blasts in magnetic mortar, which were conducted from 2011 to 2014 at the blasting site of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.The aim of the study was the investigation of the influence of blasthole delay times in small-scale bench blasts on the face characteristics and cracking damage created in the surrounding rock, which affects the fragmentation in subsequent rows.The test specimens or blocks, which were produced out of magnetite concrete, were roughly 1:100 in scale to normal bench blasts. The confinement of the testing blocks at the sides and back ensured the similarity to normal bench blasts with regard to the wave transmission into the surrounding rock. The specimen contained three or four rows with five blastholes each and were shot row by row, with virgin (undamaged) material in row 1 and increasingly damaged or preconditioned material in the following rows.The tested delay times varied between 0, 28, 73 and 140 µs, which corresponds to 0, 0.4, 1.0 and 2.0 ms/m of burden.The evaluation of the material properties showed that the use of magnetite concrete eliminated the inhomogeneous behaviour of rock, but some unexpected differences of the individual production cycles were still detected.The characteristics of the bench after each blast was evaluated along three horizontal lines out of a 3D model of the bench face. The tested delay time sequences of the virgin (first row) and single preconditioned blasts (second row) produced more overbreak for longer delays, while the third-row shots resulted in a smoothened surface independent of the chosen delay.The introduced damage after every blast was evaluated by an observation of irregularities on the newly blasted bench face. The visible cracks at the top of the testing blocks were documented and divided into several crack families according to their angle, length and origin. The remaining block was broken out of the blasting site after blasting, cut into several horizontal and vertical slices and dye penetrant spray was used to visualise the cracks created. Some of the detected crack families showed an influence of the delay time. The calculated mean crack density and mean crack intersection density showed that longer delays resulted in a higher degree of damage.The fragmentation results were well reproduced by the basic three-parameter Swebrec function. The observed improvement of fragmentation in the second- and third-row blasts was linked to the preconditioning of the burden for the following row while blasting the actual row. With the exception of the simultaneously initiated blastholes, the blasts showed coarser fragmentation for the shortest delays, while the longest delays generated the finest fragmentation.CITATION:Schimek, P, Ouchterlony, F and Moser, P, 2015. "In the presence of sulfidic refractory ores, increasing the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration can positively affect the gold leaching rate. To identify the role of DO in gold cyanidation, electrochemical behavior was studied in the presence of 3 different ores. Sample 1 was a low sulfide pyrite ore, contained 5.14% pyrite, 0.19% galena and 3.09% S. Sample 2 was a pyriticore as well, contained more sulfide as 8.35% S, and 12.4% of pyrite. Sample 3 was a tailing of silicate gold ore, still containing75 g/tAu, 0.13% Pb and 0.18% S. Gold cyanidation kinetics were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry tests. With sample 1, the gold oxidation peak current density from CV curve was increased to 1.38mA/cm2under oxygen injection, while it was only 0.66 mA/cm2with air injection. From chronoamperometry test, the reaction rate was also faster under oxygen injection. Sample 2 showed similar behavior with sample 1, but the gold oxidation peaks higher than sample 1, i.e. 1.75 and 2.27 mA/cm2, under air and oxygen injection, respectively. However, it seemed that the gold oxidation was impeded by sulfide ions for a longer period. In the presence of sample 3, the gold oxidation peak was the highest among three ores –2.75mA/cm2under oxygen injection, because of its lowest sulfide content. However, from chronoamperometry test, it was also shown that the gold oxidation was impeded because of a significant amount of Pb in the ore sample.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that gold is leached under oxidative condition (Marsden &House, 2006). Through the most representative and oldest gold leaching technique, cyanidation, more than 90% of gold can be selectively leached from an ore. According to Elsner’s equation, gold is leached in cyanide solution by forming cyanide complex [Au (CN)2–], and oxygen is consumed as an oxidant(Eq. 1)."

Mining employees undertaking shift work are at considerable risk of experiencing sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruptions. In the complex, high-risk environment of mining, these sleep and circadian disruptions lead to adverse impacts on employee health, alertness and safety. Evidence-based tools that effectively target improvements in sleep health amongst shift workers are needed. Variability in work hours and individual differences in the response to shift work mean that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution is often insufficient in complex work environments. Currently no interventions provide tailored support for shift workers based on their rosters, personal commitments and sleep habits. Existing technologies, such as smartphone applications and watches, allow sleep monitoring, but their strategies are targeted towards night sleepers, which does not translate to shift work contexts. To address this, our team has developed an innovative digital tool that implements biomathematical models to provide automated, personalised sleep and circadian intervention strategies to optimise sleep, alertness and performance during shift work. The tool uses mathematical models of sleep and alertness regulation that provide physiologically optimal times for an individual to sleep when experiencing circadian disruption. This program of work included co-designed development of a world-first app with shift workers and the examination of the preliminary efficacy of the intervention for improving sleep, alertness and performance.

The Peace River iron ore deposit represents the sole source of raw material for an integrated steel industry in Alberta. The ore has proved refractory to beneficiation by a number of techniques. A selective oil-phase agglomeration technique is described. Medium-grade concentrates, analyzing 48-53% Fe and 10-14% SiO2 were obtained with recoveries of about 75% of the total iron. These results appear to represent the optimum possible for this ore body.

The combination of shot-firing and stage loader, and a prop and bar support system is an accepted drivage method. The support configuration is based on the final prop density, and assumes relitively uniform load sharing between the props. During the development of a longwall faceline at a medium depth (approximately 600m) British coal mine using such a drivage method, a fall occured overnight, effectively closing approximately 40m of the drivage. The severity and speed of the fall prompted an investigation into the performance of the temporary support system installed prior to chock installation. This paper deals with the investigation which disclosed some major contributory factors towards loss of strata control.

The use of QemSCAN in providing mineralogical input to detailed ore and product characterization has proved of immense value in recent years. In this paper, a brief review of selected Cu-case studies is presented to demonstrate the versatility of automated, quantitative mineralogy by QemSCAN. This versatility ranges from measurement and analysis strategies through to data processing and presentation. As a rapid diagnostic service, it is common to find that only grain size, the degrees of liberation and/or ore mineral modal mineralogy are of interest. By contrast, the detail afforded by the simultaneous determination of both gangue and ore minerals can alert mineral engineers to fatal flaws and attributes deleterious to processing that are directly a function of silicate and other gangue mineralogy. Examples of the latter effects include the influence of micaceous minerals and acid consuming species, while the former include fluorine minerals, which can provide both processing and environmental challenges.

Different gas purging methods to metallurgical baths have been applied to date, among which are top lancing and bottom blowing through tuyeres or porous plugs. Among these, the porous plug bottom blowing technique has shown higher efficiency in gas utilization than tuyeres and top blowing, due to smaller bubble size and lower liquid velocity. However, the studies related to bottom stirring of metallurgical baths are limited to slag-less or thin slag-covered melts. In particular, there is no examination of stirring ability in conditions similar to Falconbridge's Slag Make Converter, where the bath is covered with a thick slag layer and a stream of solids is charged on the bath from top. This study was undertaken to investigate the application of gas purging through a porous plug in stirring in and melting of the solid feeds. The spreading behaviour and melting time of a solid layer forming on a plume created by stirring were calculated using the existing models. The results show that formation of a thick solid layer, specifically in areas beyond the plume region is very likely. Nevertheless, the thickness of the layer and melting time do not appear unreasonably high. It is predicted that by proper controlling of gas flowrate and plug configurations, successful solid charging through the mouth can be practiced.
