A sampling and measurement program was undertaken on the reaction shaft of the Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. The object of the work was to provide information to validate a mathematical model of the burner and reaction shaft. Samples and measurements were undertaken through the burner inspection ports and the South East (SE) shaft sampling port about half way down the reaction shaft. Samples were collected to enable the calculation of particle loading of shaft gases, or sizing and chemical analysis of the partly-combusted feed, and the preparation of polished sections. Measurements were made of the temperature and sulfur dioxide content of the atmosphere, as well as plume velocity.To implement the program it was necessary to design and construct the following specialised items of equipment. For use at the burner inspection ports: a cup sampler for obtaining samples below the burners (temperature, solids loading and samples for characterisation).For use at the SE shaft sampling port and also at the settler level: trough sampler (plume definition and samples), isokinetic sampler (used as a velocity probe in this work), temperature probe (temperature traverses across the shaft), and sulfur dioxide probe (SO2 measurements across the shaft).The design of the sampling and measuring equipment is described, and examples are cited of the types of information obtained. The problems arising from working in a hot environment with molten or sticky particles are discussed.

Continuous laboratory solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions using LIX?79 guanidine based extractant has been investigated. Different variables that affected the selectivity and extraction include aqueous pH, extractant concentration, and modifier concentration. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to the other cyano anions were compared, and the following order of selectivity Au > Ag > Zn > Cu > Fe was observed. According to the pH isotherms, aurocyanide can be extracted in an alkaline media, and a better separation with respect to the other cyanoanions was obtained in the pH range 10.5-11.2. From the McCabe Thiele diagrams, better recovery was predicted when using LIX?79 extractant and tridecanol modifier at 10 vol.%. Stripping of the gold from the loaded organic was carried out at pH > 12 using NaOH and NaCN solution. The continuous tests indicate that a two-stage extraction followed by a single stage strip is adequate to obtain an overall process efficiency of >90%. Better results were obtained using a copper wash stage before gold stripping.

As partial implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM), Department of Interior, has requested each state to inventory hazardous abandoned mining areas within their boundaries. Primary interest is in such areas .as unstable waste-banks, subsidence and slumping, contamination of water supplies, and preservation of overall aesthetic qualities through reclamation. In addition to the concern expressed for abandoned mining areas, the legislation requires a complete inspection of operating mines quarterly and a partial inspection monthly. In Arizona copper has been mined for over 100 years and coal and uranium mining promises to expand in future years. The OSM requirement for a waste inventory and frequent monitoring of Arizona's large, widely spaced mines places a severe demand on limited personnel and operating budgets. Remote sensing by satellite provides an attractive and effective approach to aid the inventory and monitoring requirements of the OSM legislation.

MORE ORE is mined in the Bingham District than in any other mining district in Utah. In addition to the open-pit operations of the Utah Copper Co., there have been, many large underground mines. Until recent years the principal production was from the Jordan and Commercial limestones, but in the last eight years valuable ore deposits have been developed in the so-called alphabetical or "A," "B," "C," and "D" limestones, mainly by the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. The value of these developments has led the company just mentioned to acquire large holdings in the district and within the last year to install at the Niagara shaft a hoist capable of going to a vertical depth of 4000 ft., or 1800 ft. deeper than the present lowest level. Caterpillar and Fortescue Metals Group have moved forward with the delivery, installation and support of a complete Cat MineStar System at Fortescue?s Solomon iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The complete technology suite was implemented for the first phase of Solomon, the 20 Mt/a (22 million stpy) Firetail manned mine, in October 2012. As part of an autonomous mining solution for phase two, the 40-Mt/a (44-million stpy) Kings Mine, eight Command for hauling Cat 793F CMD trucks were commissioned and commenced operations in the second quarter of 2013. The mine plan calls for a progressive ramp up to 45 autonomous trucks during the next several years. In addition, other Cat MineStar System capability sets, Fleet, Terrain, Detect and Health, are being used across the mobile equipment fleet, including support equipment and light vehicles. Working closely with Fortescue and its mining contractor, Leighton Contractors, Caterpillar and the Cat dealer in Western Australia, WesTrac, are providing a full solution for managing, operating and supporting Cat MineStar System and Command for hauling. The greenfield Solomon Mine has brought together the skilled team from Caterpillar, Fortescue, Leighton Contractors and WesTrac to deliver an efficient, cost effective autonomous mining solution.

THE relationship between hardenability based on a 50 per cent martensite criterion, and that based on higher percentages of martensite in a number of low-alloy steels was discussed in a previous paper by the authors.1 It was found that the differences between the hardenability values based on the 50 per cent martensite and full martensite criterions increased as the hardenability increased and that, in the steels of higher hardenability, these differences were fairly large. Furthermore, it was found that these relationships could be expressed with reasonable accuracy as a function of the hardenability. The importance of the full martensite criterion of hardenability in relation to the attainment of the optimum mechanical properties of tempered martensite was emphasized in the earlier paper. The purpose of the present work is to study the effects of some of the individual alloying elements on hardenability, using three different percentages of martensite as criteria, and thereby to evaluate the role of these individual elements in the general hardenability relationships previously reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Induction-furnace heats weighing 17-lb., of the compositions given in Table I, were cast and forged into 1 ¼ in. round bars. All heats were killed with aluminum additions corresponding to 1 lb. per ton. The compositions were chosen to represent several series of steels, in which only one alloying element would vary and in which the nonmartensitic constituents on quenching would be predominantly bainitic. All bars were normalized from 1650°F. and tempered one hour at I 150°F. prior to the hardenability determinations. Hardenability values are based on metallographic examination of standard Jominy bars, quenched from 1600°F. (I hr. and 20 min. heating time). The general procedure was the same as outlined in detail in the previous paper; (I) that is, the distance from the quenched end of the bar to the point of 0.1 per cent transformation was first measured on the microscope and then the percentage of martensite was estimated at every 0.05 in. from the quenched end, and these percentage values plotted against the distance along the bar. In this case, samples 2 in. long were cut from the quenched end of the Jominy bars and 10 fields were examined and averaged at each distance. The conversion of Jominy distance to ideal diameter is based on a revised correlation curve (Fig. I). This curve is based on work carried out at the Research Department of the South Chicago Works, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, and represents a direct correlation between hardenability values as deter-

Following the recession of 2001, restrained consumer spending, declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output, and increased unemployment led to a lack-luster year in the domestic economy. In 2002, the U.S. real gross domestic product (GPD) grew only 2.4%. Significant production declines in the U.S. metals industry were registered by copper, lead and zinc producers. Steel producers, despite a slight improvement in shipments, continued to face strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. Homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors— major consumers of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above 2001 levels. A strong U.S. dollar relative to other national currencies continued to weaken the competitive stance of U.S. metal and non-metal mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

"INTRODUCTIONTerminal 46 is located just south of downtown Seattle, and is one of the Port of Seattle’s busiest container terminals. The Terminal 46 Redevelopment Project was undertaken to replace the existing 15-m-wide (50 ft) cranes along the apron with 30-m-wide (100 ft) cranes, which can unload larger, post- Panamax ships. The project included upgrading the existing waterside crane rail with new piles and constructing a new land-side rail behind the sheetpile bulkhead. The new piles had to be installed adjacent to the existing apron without causing damage, which was a signifi cant geotechnical challenge due to the soft soil conditions at the site. An instrumentation program performed during the test pile program evaluated this challenge and allowed for the development of specifi c production pile installation procedures that had the least possible effect on construction costs and schedule. SITE HISTORYThe site lies along the west side of Elliott Bay, north of the mouth of the Duwamish Waterway. Prior to development, this area was part of the tide fl ats where the Duwamish River drained into Elliott Bay. Prior to 1970, there were several existing timber piers and structures in the area. In the 1970s, the Port of Seattle constructed a 900-m-long (3,000 ft), 30- m-wide (100 ft) apron to support fi ve, 15-m-wide (50 ft) container cranes. The contained backland area was then fi lled with dredged spoils (sand and silt with organics) and the upper 5 to 20 m (16 to 65 ft) backfi lled with sand and gravel.The existing apron was constructed using 0.4 m (16 in) octagonal prestressed concrete piles to support the precast concrete deck and crane rails. The pile-supported bents were spaced at 6.1 m (20 ft), center-to-center, along the longitudinal direction. Pile lengths typically varied from about 20 to 40 m (65 to 130 ft) with 15 to 26 m penetration below mudline (50 to 85 ft penetration). The slope below the apron was constructed at about 1.75 horizontal to 1 vertical to allow for suffi cient water depth for cargo ships. In most areas, a riprap buttress was placed at the toe of the slope. A typical cross section of the apron is shown on Figure 2.Several stability, settlement and pile driving issues arose during the original construction of T-46 (Pita, 1983). Reportedly, movement of the submarine slope occurred during pile driving, resulting in settlement behind the bulkhead. Pile driving reportedly caused settlement of adjacent piles. In addition, some piles were “running” (dropping quickly under one hammer blow) during installation."

This study extends our information on solid-liquid slurries to the flow of sand in horizontal fractures. Inasmuch as this is basically an unsteady-state process, a comprehensive photographic study was undertaken in a 10-ft windowed cell to determine if the basic flow regimes described for steady-state flow in pipes applied to the subject process. Since the number of potential variables far exceeds the capacity of a single study, emphasis has been placed on the effects of sand concentration, oil viscosity and oil flow rate. The extensive photographic evidence obtained has proven very valuable in gaining an insight into the basic flow mechanisms. Being able to follow visually the flow characteristics that accompany the quantitative data is valuable in the application of the results. Although the use of dimensionless parameters was carefully investigated. it was found that the data obtained could be more easily, and as accurately, correlated by judicious use of the dimensional variables investigated. However, a study into the feasibility of scaling slurry flow was made in the event this technique is justified in future investigations. The data presented show that the pressure behavior observed in solids transport in pipes basically applies to slurry flow in horizontal fractures. The roles of the parameters are altered but a basic equivalence exists. The most significant correlating parameter was the oil viscosity (µo) and the bulk velocity of the slurry (vn), expressed as ''µv" product. The most significant correlation expresses the rate of advance of the sand as a function of the variables investigated. There are many practical ramifications of this phase of the investigation that should aid in better treatment design. Evaluation of sand advance rates provides a means of estimating sand placement efficiencies during a treatment and the resulting sand distribution in the fracture. The results show that sand placement efficiencies are low under typical treatment conditions. A brief description of the effects of overflushing is also included. INTRODUCTION The flow of sand-oil slurries in fractures is an area in which little basic knowledge is available. This stems to some degree from the fact that it is impossible to duplicate fractures at the surface. They occur in various shapes and sizes with an infinite combination of irregularities. Unfortunately, we can never "see" these fractures except in cores and by indirect means of measurement. In spite of this inherent difficulty, it is desirable to develop some basic concepts that will provide a better understanding of the sand transport mechanism. An insight into the problem is provided by investigations of fluid flow in rectangular conduits. Several studies on the flow of liquids in non-circular conduits1,13 show that a Reynolds number-Fanning friction factor relationship can be written if the hydraulic diameter is substituted for the regular diameter in a circular pipe. This hydraulic, or equivalent, diameter is taken as four times the cross-sectional area occupied by the flowing fluid divided by the wetted perimeter. Eq. 1 expresses an extension of this same work when applied to infinite parallel planes b distance apart.' Eq. 1 is a theoretical equation expressing the friction factor as a function of the Reynolds number for laminar single-phase fluid flow. This expression has been verified experimentally. The equivalent expression for a smooth circular conduit differs only in that the value of the constant is 16 instead of 24. Numerous studies have related friction losses to Reynolds number in both circular and non-circular conduits. These results are widely used and are not reviewed here. Huitt' investigated the effect of surface roughness on fluid flow in simulated fractures. He concluded that fluid flow in fractures may be treated similarly to fluid flow in circular conduits. This work, together with that of Nikuradse,' shows that surface roughness has no appreciative effect upon the resistance to flow in the viscous flow region. In the region of turbulent flow, surface roughness is a prominent factor. Hydraulic conveyance literature is another important source of information. Durand3 has attempted to organize systematically the variables involved in hydraulic-solid transport in pipes. He has classified the modes of flow into three types according to the size of the particles in the mixture— homogeneous mixtures, intermediary mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures. With the usual concentrations and flow rates used in hydraulic transportation, particles with diameters of less than 20 or 30 microns form eszentially homogeneous mixtures with water. The data show, however, that even small materials will tend to settle out under laminar flow conditions. Mixtures containing solids over 50 microns in diameter do not achieve total homogeneity even under turbulent flow conditions. Particles from 50 microns to 0.2 mm in diameter may be transported in fully suspended flow at normal transport velocities although the concentration in the vertical plane is not uniform. Above 2 mm in diameter solid materials are transported along the bottom of the conduit at a velocity substantially less than that of the liquid itself. Between 0.2 and 2 mm in diameter, the particles tend to be in a transition zone between heterogeneous suspended flow and deposit flow at normal hydraulic transport velocities. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) imposed a no-blasting specification (blasting is restricted to the construction shaft and shaft bottom or boot) on the Deep Tunnel project in 1988. This was prompted by numerous complaints from the residents in the vicinity of the project, and controversies experienced on previous projects from blasting the rock overlying the tunnel. This paper will describe the methods utilized by two major contractors who are driving 20 km (12.5 of tunnel along with drilling over 36 shafts under this restrictive specification. The impacts on design, construction, schedule, cost, and the environment are detailed.

THE melting department is the heart of the foundry. From it clean metal flows to the molding floor, in the right quantity, at the right time and at a sufficiently low cost-or, if not, the foundry fails to thrive. Since it is our purpose here to discuss present-day melting practice in the foundry, it may be well at the start to emphasize the wide differences in foundries and the conditions under which they must operate in order to reach the goal stated in the first paragraph. In every foundry, large or small, jobbing or captive, the same factors must be dealt with but they are of varying consequence and must be dealt with in varying ways in different foundries. Particularly in the nonferrous industry, there is so wide a variation in the composition of alloys used and in the character of castings made that no one type of furnace, nor any one method of operation, can be expected to produce the best results at all times. The present discussion will not attempt to include all nonferrous metals. It is intended to cover only the copper-base alloys in which copper is the dominant element, most of which are commonly known as brass or bronze. The discussion is further limited to the melting of these copper-base alloys for use in sand-casting foundries. Die-casting plants, the brass-rolling mills and certain other metal industries have melting problems peculiar to those industries, which will not be considered here. The following considerations are elemental in all foundries and are listed in what is believed to be the relative order of their present-day importance: I. The melting department must meet the foundry's requirement for dean, fluid metal, of specified composition and purity, at a temperature suitable for the work the foundry has in hand. This is the prime consideration in any foundry, at any time, anywhere. 2. Working conditions surrounding the melting furnaces and attending their use must be good. 3. The cost of molten metal at the mold must be as low as possible. 4. The operating characteristics of the furnaces must be sufficiently flexible, to meet normal variations in foundry requirements. 5. The operation and maintenance of the melting equipment must not require more skill and experience than is available in the particular foundry in question. METAL QUALITY It is not a function of the melting furnace to refine or improve the quality of the metal but simply to melt it without impairing its quality. Good practice requires, therefore, that care must be taken to supply the melting department with metal of inherently good quality, assured by specification or otherwise, having all the properties necessary to produce the castings desired. An alloy contains a number of primary elements, which must be present in definite proportions if the castings made from it are to have the desired properties. If the castings are made to a customer's specification, this will state the range within which these principal elements (for example, copper, tin, lead and zinc) are permitted to vary.

Treatability studies were performed to determine the effectiveness of two commercially available treatment methods (solvent extraction and thermal desorption) for the removal of PCBs and PAHs from contaminated dredged riverbed sediments. The solvent extraction method evaluated was the B.E.S.T. process which extracts the contaminants with triethylamine. The thermal desorption method utilized was the ATP process which desorbs the contaminants at elevated temperature in an anaerobic atmosphere. A description of both methods and. an evaluation of the treatability study results is provided. Each treatment method was used to treat two separate samples (high and low concentration) from the site. Overall, both methods proved to be very effective with solvent extraction achieving 98% removal of both PCBs and PAHs and thermal desorption achieving better than 99% removal of both the PCBs and PAHs from the high concentration sample. Both solvent extraction and thermal desorption achieved greater than 99% removals of PCBs and PAHs from the low concentration sample. Vendor cost estimates for full scale treatment were roughly equivalent. The primary differences between the two methods lies in the realm of permitting, operational requirements, and emission concerns.

Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. "The purpose of this work was to study the reutilization of the steelmaking dust, derived from steel production in the electric arc furnace (EAF), in iron ore sintering process aiming zinc elimination. In each sintering process were collected sintered samples, these materials were analyzed by chemical analysis using atomic absorption spectrophotometry in order to determine the zinc content. Samples of not sintered mixtures were also characterized by chemical analysis aiming to determine the initial amounts of zinc, i.e. in order to check the zinc amounts present in the mixture before the sintering process. The comparation among the zinc contents of samples sintered and not sintered allowed to determine the elimination of zinc during the experiments. Results showed that the zinc elimination in the process is proportional to the ratio reducer/waste. The zinc removal was lower when the reducer/waste ratio was decreased.IntroductionThe electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a residue generated in the steelmaking process using electric arc furnace. Aproximately 30% of all steel produced (in the year 2009) was obtained through electric arc furance (EAF). In the United States of America the percentage of this process in the total crude steel production was about 62% in 2009, while in 2000 this percentage was only 47% [1].The iron ore sintering is a process that reuses wastes generated in metallurgical industries. However, the materials used must be physical and chemical characteristics compatible with the blast furnaces.The quantity of zinc, cadmium, chrome and other metals present in the EAFD depends on the quality of the scrap used to feed the EAF and the type of steel that it is been made [2,3]. The reuse of EAFD waste is interesting to steelmaking processes because of its iron content. However the presence of zinc inside a blast furnace is undesirable since the zinc oxide can be deposited on the blast furnace walls and in the drivers of gas output, interrupting the flow. Another part of the zinc oxide can form deposits on the refractory lining of the blast furnace [4,5]."

The Geology Division of Northern Pacific Railway Company has adapted to its exploration efforts field procedures for geochemical sampling and semi-quantitative analysis which have been developed through research by the U. S. Geological Survey. The sampling is done in conjunction with reconnaissance geologic mapping on aerial photographs or during field checking of maps which have been prepared largely by photogeologic interpretation.. Stream sediment or soil samples are taken and readily soluble combined heavy metals are extracted with ammonium citrate followed by colorimetric titration with dithizone at the sample site. The effectiveness of this approach has been demonstrated both in positive and negative results, thereby assisting in the elimination of large areas of land from further immediate attention and in providing targets for followup exploration. An occasional sample is submitted for spectrographic analysis as a check on the possible presence of other elements of economic significance. Field laboratory procedures are also being implemented for determining molybdenum, mercury, and other metals which may be valuable in themselves or useful as pathfinder elements in outlining mineralized areas. A lead-zinc occurrence in Oregon and a copper deposit in Montana were readily detected and outlined by stream sediment and soil sampling and a heavy metal anomaly that lacks obvious interpretation has been found in northwestern Montana. Detailed mapping and additional sampling are followed by other exploration techniques if warranted.

Powered haulage and haul truck-related fatal accidents are among the most frequent at surface mines. Industry organizations developed guidance on accident scenarios to address haul truck and mobile equipment collision-related accidents. However, there is a need to investigate accident data to prioritize these scenarios and identify factors relevant to developing validation methods for collision warning/avoidance technologies and determining their capabilities and limitations. Standards and effective validation methods are necessary for improving system efficacy within mining operations and promoting industry adoption. To address these needs, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated available powered-haulage and machinery-related fatal accident reports documented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Their objective was to gain a perspective for informing the development of test protocols and validation methods through determining the most prevalent accident scenarios and related factors. Our findings afford insight for addressing the most prevalent haul truck scenarios and relevant factors within U.S. surface mining environments.

Quarrying in Australia accounts for a total annual production of around 200 Mt/a of sand, aggregate and materials used in construction. This material has an annual value of the order of $2 billion and, combined with transport costs of a further $1 billion, the annual value of quarry products are in excess of $3 billion. Currently all of the production of construction materials in Australia is from open cut quarrying or dredging. This paper focuses on the extraction of material by underground mining methods, termed æunderground quarryingÆ. The paper considers a case study for future underground development expansion of the existing open cut Mt Coot-tha quarry, located 5 km from the centre of Brisbane, Queensland.
