The Bureau of Mines investigated the potential availability of magnesium from 45 properties in market economy countries (MEC's). The 38 significant deposits evaluated have demonstrated resources of approximately 29 billion short tons (st) magnesium-bearing material containing 416 million short tons (MMst) magnesium oxide (MgO). Using data it gathered, the Bureau determined the magnesium production potential for each property including a 15-pct rate of return on invested capital. Total and annual availability assessments for the next 30 yr were completed for magnesium (Mg) metal, deadburned MgO, and caustic calcined MgO. At a January 1984 market price of $1.34/Ib Mg metal, the properties evaluated could economically produce an estimated 13 MMst Mg metal. At a market price of $400/st nonmetal magnesium product, these properties could economically produce 109 MMst deadburned MgO and 43 MMst caustic MgO. These properties could produce approximately 301,000 st Mg metal, 3.0 MMst deadburned MgO, and 430,000 st caustic MgO annually at current full production levels and 1984 market prices until at least the year 2000. Total 1984 MEC production assessed in this study was 153,000 st Mg metal and 4.3 MMst nonmetallic MgO products.

The legacy issues from mining can, and have often, extended well beyond the closure of operations. However, conventional cost-benefit analysis provides little incentive to implement initiatives at the project development stages of a new mining project as the costs that will be incurred towards the end of the mine life, 20 years or longer, appear minor in net present value (NPV) terms. This analysis can be misleading as the true costs of managing post-mining land can continue for many years, or decades, after mining ceases and any resulting unfavourable legacy issues can delay or prevent government permits or licences to develop new resources. Proper upfront planning is critical for implementing successful rehabilitation and closure strategies. The investment in this planning needs to be done in a structured and rigorous manner taking into consideration the long-term and broad benefits of sustainable land uses after mine closure. The advantages of such an approach could include the streamlining of regulatory approvals by early advice to the regulator of identified issues and responses to those issues, and clear evidence that a strong social licence to operate ethic with local, regional and national benefits is included in the decision-making process. This paper investigates the potential closure options for two case studies at the early stages of project development - concept and prefeasibility. By using a sustainability framework that can identify opportunities and risks, prospective initiatives that deliver enhanced environmental, community and social benefits will be compared with compliance-orientated approaches. This comparison is made across the Five Capitals Sustainability Model - natural, human, social, manufactured and financial. The results of this analysis demonstrate that upfront planning during project development and due care and effort during the life of the working mine will reduce the risks of long-term detrimental legacy issues. Autonomous fragmentation measurement systems designed for shovels have been in operation for nearly two decades, however fragmentation systems capable of performing in the dynamic conditions of the front-end loaders (FEL) were only recently introduced to the market. This paper presents an in-depth evaluation of an automated digital fragmentation measurement system specifically designed to perform under the dynamic operational conditions of the FEL in two of Teck’s mine sites. As early adopters of this novel application, Teck embarked on a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) trial phase, defining a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) to qualify the performance of the digital solution in tough mining operating environments. The KPIs focused primarily on the hardware robustness, quality of image and segmentation, both day and night, availability of the system and sample ratio. The benefits expected from using this technology include increasing the safety of the current fragmentation measurement process, improving the quality of the analysis, increasing the sample representativeness, and using the attributes of the system to create an oversize detection alert to inform the loading operation process. A critical part of the evaluation was verifying the system’s effectiveness on the particle segmentation algorithm as this element often gets overlooked, especially when dealing with the large number of samples autonomous systems can generate; minor misclassifications due to inadequate segmentation are often dismissed as they might not be statistically significant, however systematic misclassifications can cause unacceptable deviation in the data and limit the intended application of the technology. The system’s performance was further validated through several tests that involved identifying objects of known sizes to ensure the reliability on the consistency of the particles’ segmentation.

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. At the risk of belaboring certain facts which have so often been stated in the past, please bear with me while I set the stage. What are the projected electrical power needs of the nation and of the Northwest during the next 15 to 20 years? No one who has researched the subject over its historical past has reached a substantially different result than the following simple conclusion: electrical power requirements are doubling every decade. There are some who question the necessity of a power company's need to install capacity every ten years equal to what it has done during its entire previous history; there are even those who would argue that such growth should be arbitrarily curtailed. We are not here today to decide who should have light, heat, jobs and comfort, for we know that a power company must, by law, meet its responsibilities of providing the energy the public expects when the switch is thrown. The Northwest area (the States of Oregon and Washington), for which I speak, has the same case history of electrical power need as does the nation as a whole, and the requirement boils down to roughly an average of a million kilowatts of new capacity each year over the next ten years and we can estimate an average two million kilowatts per year in the 1980's. This is simple arithmetic, but the problems of meeting this exhausting schedule are a real challenge. The subject to which I address this paper is the role that Western Coal will play in the 6 billion dollar investment in these power generation stations. That 6 billion dollar figure represents today's dollar value and you may wish to apply your own escalation - frankly, I haven't the courage.

Annually, the United States uses more than 4 billion tons of new mineral materials, or about 40,000 pounds per person-about half being mineral fuels and the other half being metals and nonmetallics. Stable and economic domestic mining, mineral, metal, and mineral reclamation industries are essential to the economy. The value of United States energy and processed materials of mineral origin exceds $200 billion annually. Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

AMMONIA is an essential constituent in the production of the ammonium-sulphate and ammonium-phosohate soil fertilizers manufactured by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The fertilizer plant, built in 1930 at Warfield, near Trail, provides a means of utilizing the large amount of sulphuric acid produced from the sulphur dioxide which is removed from the smelter smoke. The plant has an avail-able source of cheap power which makes the production of fertilizer economically possible. The fundamental operations involved in the production of ammonia at the Warfield plant are, first, the manufacture of hydrogen by the electrolytic dissociation of water; next, the recovery of nitrogen by the fractional distillation of liquid air; and finally, the combination of hydrogen and nitrogen in proper proportions and under suitable conditions to form ammonia.

Froth flotation has been the heart of mineral beneficiation for over a century. Over the years, developments have been made in flotation cell design, size, and in many other aspects of flotation technology. Despite the overall effectiveness of these improvements, valuable mineral particles are often lost along with waste material. These particles are lost when the froth recovery process within a flotation system is not designed for variable froth conditions seen in plant operations. Both the amount of froth generated and the type of froth in a flotation cell change as concentrate is removed down a row of cells. Traditionally, froth recovery has been designed using a froth carry rate averaged over the entire row of flotation cells with a static amount of open area at the top of the cell.

The Bureau of Mines has in its files additional, more detailed data upon many of the topics presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and the public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. It will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later editions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully the bureau's mineral files pertaining to sulphur. Throughout this paper sulphur is used to designate crude sulphur or brimstone, not sulphur produced from pyrites or' smelter gases.

The analysis of equipment trends in The AusIMMÆs revision of Monograph 19 - Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) (in prep) in the paper by Graham Lumley raised some interesting, and in parts disturbing, trends in the Australian open cut mining industry. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2011) the productivity of the whole mining industry is down by 34 per cent since 2001. In terms of open cut equipment, median output for draglines is down by 15 per cent since 2003, electric rope shovels are down by 41 per cent since 2003, hydraulic excavators are down by 39 per cent since 2008, front-end loaders are down by 39 per cent since 2007 and trucks are down by 41 per cent since 2006. Clearly e boom has not been good for the efficiency of the mines. During this same time, best practice (defined as the average of the top ten per cent by annual output per unit of input) has declined, but not by as much as the median (eg shovels down by eight per cent, excavators down by 19 per cent and FELs down by five per cent). This paper will build on the analysis of AMMOP to understand the differences occurring between median and best practice and identify the factors contributing to the decline in performance. As the industry enters a period of potentially lower prices for commodities and reduced margins, pressure will be brought to bear on mine sites to start moving more with the equipment they have. An understanding of where efficiency has been lost will be a key component in that. The information contained in AMMOP, and the subsequent analysis of that information in papers such as this one, will be crucial to reversing the decline in open cut equipment performance.CITATION:Lumley, G, Trott, T and Lewis, M, 2012. Despite the claims of energy efficiency and the considerable development that has gone into dramatically extending rolls? life and facilitating rolls? change-out, in the six years since the last SAG conference, only a few HPGR operations have entered the realm of mineral processing. Risk barriers to the take-up of new equipment or processes are: a massive increase in materials handling issues as well as in the number of pieces of equipment required, low total circuit potential energy savings, and similar or higher capital costs. An alternative route is to make use of the complementary strengths of the HPGR and SAG in hybrid circuits. Minimising materials handling issues, providing an ideal balanced feed to the AG or SAG mill, and improving controllability through shifting grinding load as the RoM feed changes, are all potential major advantages to this approach. Conceptual circuit layouts, based on real measured ore and equipment data, are presented here to illustrate the potential production upside, the reduction in operating costs and the reduction in the physical and energy footprints.

"THIS PAPER will trace the work done in bringing the Munro underground ""A"" •Orebody into production to replace the open pit, which was scheduled to be completed early in 1959. Included will be an outline of the exploration work and early planning, and of the final decisions on mining methods. Some of the more detailed work will be described and reasons will be given for the decisions made regarding development work, mine ventilation, ground support, and equipment. Brief mention will be made of open pit operations, as these have had some influence on underground development. Also, some of the main geological features of the ore occurrence will be de-scri0bed, as these had to be taken into consideration when making decisions on ore development and mining methods.LOCATION AND HISTORYhe Munro mine of Canadian Johns-Manville is in Ontario, approximately 50 miles east of Timmins and 40 miles west of the Que-bec-Ontari-0 boundary. The producing orebody is in the southwestern part of Munro township. Property controlled by the Company extends nortl1westerly about 2¥2 miles into Beatty township, on which two other interesting asbestos-bearing zones have been partially expl-0red. Active exploration work on the property was started in March, 194.9, and continued until the summer of 1950."

"Predicting how coal seams will be beneficiated through the coal handling processing plant (CHPP) has long been challenging within BHP Coal. Various coal seams from different areas are mined and stockpiled separately, often depending upon a deleterious coal quality parameter; high/low trace elements for example. These stockpiles are then fed in different ratios into the CHPP to produce the desired product/s. In understanding the washability characteristics of the feed source, mine geologists and process engineers work together to improve the beneficiation of different coal materials through the CHPP.For the majority of the BHP Coal deposits, the washability data is available for the coal seams across the deposits. However, no previous standardised modelling and prediction technique existed that could ensure the correct information was available for forecasting and refining CHPP processes. This paper will discuss the steps undertaken to implement a geometallurgical prediction tool that simplified and streamlined the washability modelling and yield estimation process. The value realised to the BHP Coal assets resulting from this process was: improved compliance to plan increased throughput increased CHPP recovery through improved efficiencies and increased revenues.CITATION:Handley, P J, 2017. The Israel Mining Industries Institute for Research and Development has developed, during recent years, a number of new processes for fertilizer materials. Their phosphoric acid processes, however, are capable of producing an acid of far higher quality than that normally associated with fertilizer grade acid. This paper will discuss two of these processes showing the quality attainable and the capital and operating costs for, U. S. conditions. The Standard IMI Process is based on the acidulation of phosphate rock with hydrochloric acid and involves solvent extraction for the separation of high quality, phosphoric acid from the resulting solution. The IMI Purification Process applies the same solvent extraction technique to the purification of a wet process phosphoric acid from sulfuric acidulated rock. IMI has built and operated a semi-works scale demonstration plant for the standard process. The first commercial plant was started up in; Japan in 1962. This small seven metric ton per day plant is currently producing a furnace quality acid. A larger 50 metric ton per day plant is nearing completion in Brazil. Another 50 metric ton per day plant is under design while a large plant with a capacity in excess of 150 metric ton per day is in the planning stage. Both of the latter facilities are for Israel.

According to the 2010-2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accidents in U.S. longwall mines were caused by roof instability. Gateroads are subject to significant changes in loading conditions from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases. When combined with thinly bedded shale roof, found in many U.S. longwall coal mines, the design of efficient roof support becomes challenging. In previous work, the Bonded Block Method (BBM) modeling of roof by UDEC was validated against field extensometer measurements in a longwall gateroad entry roof at a 180-m depth of cover. The BBM was shown as capable of capturing delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. This paper presents the recent findings on the roof-support interaction using BBM models of the same longwall entry. The effects of cable bolts, roof bolt density, and strap support on potential roof instability are studied. These types of studies are difficult and costly to conduct in an operating mine. Results show how the contribution of bolts, straps, and cable bolts can be quantified using the BBM models. The study demonstrates the potential for BBM numerical models to help understand the complex roof and support system interactions and to assist with optimizing gateroad support systems.

A new process has been developed for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates at atmospheric pressure using air or oxygen plus nitrogen dioxide in dissolved or gaseous form as? an oxygen carrier. The process is flexible and can cope with variations in the degrees of retention and regeneration of dissolved nitrogen dioxide in the leaching phase. By controlled addition of concentrate a leach solution with low residual nitrate concentration can be produced. Following separation by filtration of unleached solids and elementa1 sulphur and conventional oxidation/precipitation of dissolved iron, the leach liquor can be treated with metallic zinc to remove the remaining nitrate and other meta111c impurities such as copper, cadmium and cobalt to provide a solution suitable for electrolytic recovery of zinc. Pilot scale testing of the process .has given zinc recoveries in the high nlnet1es, production of a hi.gh grade jarosite-free Pb/Ag residue (50% Pb.) and a saleable high grade of elemental sulphur. .A wide range of concentrates can be treated containing substantial levels of lead and copper as well as zinc. Indicative cost estimates suggest that the new process is competitive with alternative procedures such as pressure leaching.

Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple, powerful metric that provides a comprehensive measure of classification system performance. CSE directly quantifies the amount of coarse solids in the mill, and as a result, also directly quantifies the percentage of mill power being used effectively. In this manner, it is an effective, practical grinding energy efficiency metric.Three independent variables drive CSE: circulating load ratio, sharpness of classification, and classifier bypass. Due to practical downstream constrains on per cent solids, improvements realised by increasing circulating load reach diminishing returns as sharpness of classification and bypass deteriorate in the most commonly used classification device, the hydrocyclone. This combination of effects leads to the use of CSE, and its relationship to operational economics, as an objective circuit optimisation criterion.Its simplicity in measurement makes CSE a useful tool for the plant metallurgist, and it is not subject to a great amount of experimental error. CSE provides the plant operator a fast, simple, and effective means to evaluate the performance of the plant classification system. Improvements in CSE relate directly to circuit throughput and energy efficiency. The mineral industry of Montana in 1963 used 36.5 billion gallons of new water, and reused or recirculated an additional 53.5 billion gallons for a total water requirement or usage of 90 billion gallons. The petroleum industry was the major water user, followed by the copper and zinc industries. Many mineral industry operators provide their own water, and new water is withdrawn largely from surface sources. At present, sufficient water is available in rivers, streams, and reservoirs in Montana; however, shortages do exist locally near mineral industry operations using large quantities of water. Some is supplied from sources up to 44 miles distant. New water withdrawn by the State of Montana mineral industry is expected to increase from 36.5 billion gallons in 1963 to 51.1 billion gallons by the year 2000. The total-water requirement is expected to more than double, or reach 182 billion gallons by the year 2000.
