The purity of rectorite is only about 70% after preliminary mineral processing, which has limited its application. In this research, different pulp densities, different dispersants, different dispersing methods and purification flow sheets were used to purify rectorite. The results show that it is possible to obtain high pure rectorite clay with the purity above 90% and concentrate yield between 24.9% and 29.4% by the purification process with composite dispersants, stirred mill grinding dispersion and so on. The obtained high pure rectorite can be further used in rectorite nanocomposites.

With the end of active copper mining in 1983, the extensive underground mine workings and the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines in the United States, began to flood. Daily in- flow to the pit is about five million gallons per day, with the water level rising at a rate of 30 feet per year. To support the remedial investigation and feasibility study, a six-layer, three-dimensional MODFLOW-based ground water flow model was constructed to simulate the 9,100-acre site. The vertical domain of the model extended over 1,060 feet of elevation difference and consisted of a finite difference grid of 89 rows by 54 columns. All work was PC- based. Model boundaries were assigned to correspond to natural hydrologic features such as geologic contacts, faults, and surface water features. The fully calibrated model was approved by the State of Montana and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in the site remediation. The computer model was used to determine ground water flow velocities and contaminant travel times within the alluvial sediments adjacent to the Berkeley Pit. The purpose of the model was to predict future alluvial ground water flow directions should acid- and heavy metal-laden flood waters filling the Berkeley Pit rise up and enter the Alluvial Aquifer.

The data obtained from this study cover test areas that are gassy to ultragassy and pillared areas of different sizes and degrees of tightness. The methods of controlling ventilation, applying bleeders, and supporting bleeder entries varied in the different test areas. It was not possible to study all conditions likely to be encountered in coal mines. Undoubtedly, there are areas where bleeder entries, even though properly planned and maintained, might prove unsatisfactory. However, on the basis of this study, the following observations were made: 1. Tests showed that each bleeder system studied provided some movement of air through the pillared area; the quantities of air delivered to the pillar line, ranged from 23 to 82 percent, depending mainly on the extent to which bleeder re-turns were used as main returns from the section. 2. Pressure measurements taken across pillared areas showed maximum pressure drops ranging from 0.05 inch of water for a shallow gob to 2.69 inches for a very deep gob. The pressure differentials varied with the size and tightness of the gob but proved adequate to induce airflow across worked-out areas or through fringes of the gob to the bleeder return system.

This paper covers the development of the D600, KW-Dart's articulated loader, which combines massive size with new concepts to increase its working speed. The objective of this paper is to share the optimisation journey of a pilot Reflux classifier (RC) circuit in the Exxaro GG1 plant, at Grootegeluk beneficiation complex in Lephalale, South Africa. The RC circuit was commissioned in 2016 to produce semi-soft coking coal at its fines circuit; however the stability of operation as well as the quality control of the coal product was not fully achieved. Various test campaigns and optimisation studies were conducted to understand and optimise the RC circuit at GG1. The studies revealed circuit design inefficiencies; provided an improved technical understanding of the current pilot circuit and the parameters required for the circuit to reach a stable operation. The operation was stabilised with its current inefficiencies to produce an average 12.5% ash semi-soft coking coal product for sustained periods, above the initial target of 10.3% ash. This paper describes geomechanical criteria employed by Consol Energy for selecting mine-specific longwall face supports in the past decade. The criteria include immediate and main roof rock characteristics, floor rock characteristics, critical tip-to-face distance and shield operating range. Detailed roof rock properties from high-density core holes as well as in-mine scope holes are used to evaluate the set load density and shield stiffness required to control the immediate roof and the yield load density required to absorb the load density developed from main roof weighting. Detailed floor rock properties from core holes and in-mine floor bearing capacity tests are used to specify the maximum peak toe pressure as calculated by the Jackson method. The critical tip-to-face distance is evaluated based on the immediate roof rock strength, layering and thickness. The shield operating range is evaluated based on main bench thickness, the presence of thick draw slate, the potential of minor roof falls at the face and transportation restriction. Three case examples representing three different geologic conditions are presented to illustrate the successful application of these geomechanical criteria for selecting longwall face supports within Consol Energy in the past decade.

The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. Mining and plant disciplines can benefit from pre-concentration of UG2 platinum ores in a dense medium separation (DMS) plant. The main benefit of DMS is the selective discard of waste from the feed stream, thus improving project economics while reducing the power and water requirements for processing. On the mining side, with the correct combination of variables, implementing DMS as a pre-concentration step can reduce cut-off grades and, as a result, increase ore reserves. In addition, the use of DMS technology gives the mine team the opportunity to consider alternative mining methods for an operation. The challenges of balancing the mining tonnage, methods, and resulting grades with the process plant size, recoveries, and DMS discard volumes have resulted in the development of a model to optimize value on new projects or existing operations. This paper will focus on these benefits from a mining and plant perspective, quantifying the water and power savings, and look at the economic benefits of pre-concentration and the effect of metal prices, plant feed grade, and DMS efficiency in different mining environments.

LABOR disputes caused considerable turbulence in the coal mining industry during 1946. As an outcome of these disputes, a definitely fundamental change in safety procedure was instituted: establishment of safety regultions for coal mines through the agency of agreements between the miners' union and the agency or agencies operating the coal mines. Although a temporary plan at present, the future will determine the. extent to which it may become permanent. Notwithstanding the turmoil in the industry extending through much of the year, the safety record for the first eleven months of 1946 was the best in the history of the industry for that period. The fatality rate for 1946 is lower than in any other year in the history of coal mining in the United States. This follows a pattern inasmuch as new low coal-mine fatality records were also made in 1945, 1944, and 1943. The five-year period 1942 to 1946 inclusive has a coal-mining fatality rate far lower than any other five-year period in the history of the industry. It is significant that this period exactly coincides with the operation of Federal coal mine inspection which got under way early in 1942.

D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. The Mildred Lake Settling Basin (MLSB) is the largest disposal site for mature fine tailings (MFT) at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. oil sands plant. Over the past years (since 1996), there has been a marked change in the densification behaviour of MFT in the MLSB. Methane-producing microorganisms, known as methanogens, have become very active, and large amounts of biogas (mainly methane) have been produced. Continued field monitoring of the MLSB has provided convincing evidence of the rapid densification process (rapid water drainage from the tailings) at the area with intense microbial activity. This rapid densification has caused pumping challenges in the transfer of fine tailings from the Mildred Lake Settling Basin for the creation of composite tailings. It may also have potential positive effects in accelerating the reclamation of the oil sands fine tailings. A field and laboratory research program was carried out to study the mechanism leading to the rapid densification phenomenon. A review and discussion of the research program is given and some results from the field investigations and small-scale column tests are presented in this paper.

"With the increasing proportion of bituminous coal in blend coal, the safety of blend coal during pulverization and transportation is gradually being paid more and more attention. Therefore, the explosivity of bituminous pulverized coal (PC) with different volatile content from 25 to 38% was studied by measuring the combustion flame length after its injection into a glass pipe with the heat source installed in the center. The results indicated that high volatile content bituminous PC is apt to have higher explosivity. By blending different bituminous PC with 10% anthracite, the explosivity of bituminous PC showed a positive correlation with the proportion –OH radical. However, different bituminous PC seemed to have the same explosivity when the addition of anthracite increased to 20%. With the further increasing proportion of anthracite to 30%, the explosivity of bituminous PC with high –OH proportion became negligible while a weak explosivity of high –CH3 proportion bituminous PC still remained.IntroductionWith the increasing iron ore prices and decreasing steel prices, it has become critical for iron and steel enterprises to control the cost in ironmaking and steelmaking process. Blast furnaces (BF) are the main consumer in ironmaking process, which occupies 70% fuel consumption of total steelmaking process [1]. In this circumstance, any means necessary is taken by BF operators to lower the cost of iron in production. Coke and iron ore are the main expense in this process, who takes up a very high proportion in total cost. Pulverized coal injection (PCI) is the most efficient way to reduce coke ratio, which replace coke with relatively cheaper PC.At present, most of BF is injected with blend coal in the consideration of decent combustion property and quantity of heat. Simultaneously, bituminite and anthracite blending is an effective method to obtain blend coals with required composition and performance, such as volatile and ash content, etc. Nevertheless, a very huge gap was found between the price of bituminous coal and anthracite in some regions of China, in which the price of bituminite can be just 70% of the price of anthracite. Thus, iron enterprises in these regions attempt to possibly amplify the proportion of bituminite in blend coal. Increasing proportion of bituminite results in higher volatile content in blend coal, by which the safety of blend coal during pulverization or transportation was deteriorated.Relatively, coals with higher volatile content usually possess stronger explosivity, which means that volatile and explosivity may related to some extent. However, the relationship between volatile and explosivity is not of certainty for some PC with high volatile content around 40% was found to be inexplosive in comparison to the coals with lower volatile content. With the increasing proportion of bituminous coal in blend coal, investigations on the factors of PC explosivity have become more and more important. Therefore, bituminous coals with different volatile content were selected. The explosivity of blend coal and its relationship between volatile content and functionality was investigated in this research."

Stope layout optimization is an important feature of underground mining that maximizes the economic value of the project while taking mining limits into account. The large number of parameters and constraints makes it difficult to obtain the optimum condition. Several algorithms have been created to address these problems using a variety of methods. However, the circulating method has not explicitly included stope dimension stability analysis, resulting in a solution that is not stability-proven, which can result in a suboptimal solution. This study integrates the Mathews stability graph into the stope optimization algorithm so that the optimized stope layout considers stability conditions directly through an assessment of the available geomechanical data within the block model. The proposed algorithm is validated through a case study of a synthetic block model created by considering variations in grade and the geomechanical conditions of the rock. Furthermore, several scenarios are created to compare the performance of the algorithm that applies variations in stope sizes with the common case study of stope sizes that remain fixed. A more detailed assessment is also conducted on each final stope layout wall to ensure the successful application of stability analysis in the proposed algorithm through back analysis on the Mathews stability graph. The optimization results show that all walls in the final stope layout fall into the stable condition. Also, the proposed algorithm is also capable of maintaining the project’s economic value. Ultimately, the proposed algorithm can be deemed applicable and suitable for use in the initial stages of mining as a comprehensive assessment of the optimal stope layout, taking into account the stability conditions of the stope.

A numerical simulation of the stress field of the solidified shell in the mold during continuous casting of peritectic steel slab was calculated with commercial software. The results showed that the maximal stress on wide face of the solidified shell was located at the corner and near middle of the slab, and it increased with increasing the width of slab. In addition, the stress was also influenced by operating parameters such as superheat degree, drawing speed and cooling intensity of the mold, and the maximal stress value and its position changed with these parameters. For the slab with section size of 3200mm×150mm, the proper drawing speed was around 1.2m/min, with cooling intensity of 5500L/min while the superheat degree was 15°C to 25°C in order to prevent longitudinal crack occurring during peritectic steel continuous casting.

In view of the alarm expressed in many quarters over the increased production of copper to come from Canada and Africa in the future, it is of interest to study the history of the principal producing districts of the world and to attempt to forecast the future part to be played by them. Tables 1 and 2 record the world production and that of the United States, together with their respective rates of increase, both in percentage and actual amounts. The important point in this record is the decline in rates of increase for both the world and the United States, but more particularly in that of the latter, since 1881. The increase for the United States in the last decade is less than that for any decade since 1881, and is only 20 per cent of that for the decade 1911-20. The increase for the world is less than that for the two preceding decades, and is only about 65 per cent of the war decade 1911-20. Referring to Table 1, the decade 1871to1880 showed an increase of 32.l per cent in the world's production, which was the low until the last decade, ending 1930, which shows an increase of only 24.5 per cent. These decades both represent periods of economic stress following wars. In the first case the recovery was very sharp, the percentage increase in 1881-90 reaching a high of 86.4 per cent. It would seem dangerous, however, to assume that a similar high will be reached in the next ten years, because of the severity of the depression brought about by the Great War and the probability of its influence extending well into the next decade.

Traditional vat leaching methods have had limited success, primarily due to the high cost of loading and unloading the vats. In general, such batch methods are labor-intensive and costly. Heap leaching has emerged as a viable, low- cost alternative, but low recoveries, normally in the 70% range, offer opportunities for improvement. Also increased regulatory guidlelines for effluent and spent heap leach pads disposal offer potential for alternative methods. The Mackie Vat Leaching Jig (MVLJ) has had its incubation at Ortech International, where bench scale through pilot scale testing continues. Design developments and testwork over the past two years indicate that the time may be right for field trials.

Abstract: Data are presented from two sites in southeast England, where problems were encountered in tunnelling through ground containing flint. In response to the difficulties, substantial laboratory testing programmes were initiated to determine the strength of the flints.It is shown that the strength varies very considerably, even within a single flint particle and that the practice of estimating unconfined compressive strength by a single multiplier applied to the point load strength index (Is(50)) may give misleading results. The preparation of UCS specimens for testing was found to be very difficult and it is recommended that tunnel machine capacity is assessed relative to Is(50). Résumé: Des données sont presentées sur deux sites dans le sud-ouest de l’Angleterre,où le perçage d’un tunnel dans un sol contenant du silex a posé des problémes. En consequences de ces difficultés, des programmes substatiels de recherché en laboratoire ont été initiés afin de déterminer la resistance des silex. Il est demontré que la resistance varie considérablement, même au sein d’une particule de silex, et que la pratique de estimation de la résistance en compression non confinée, (UCS) par le biais d’un simple coefficient appliqué au ‘point load strength index (Is50)’ pourrait donner des resultants trompeurs. La préparation de specimens UCS destinés aux tests s’est avérée trés difficile et il est recommandé que la capacité de la machine de perçage de tunnels soit calculée relativement au Is50. Zusammenfassung: Daten von zwei Standorten in Südosten von England, wo Probleme beim Tunnelbau durch feuersteinhaltigen Grund antraffen, sind angegeben. Wegen diesen Schwierigkeiten wurden Laboratoriumsforschungsprogramme eingeleitet, um die Festigkeit von Feuersteinen zu bestimmen. Es wurde gefunden, dass die Festigkeit sehr unterschiedlich war, selbst bei einzelnen Feuersteinstücken, und dass die Praxis, die unbegrenzte Kompressionsfestigkeit (uKf) auf Grund eines einzigen Multiplikationsfaktors vom Punktladefestigkeitsindex (Is50) abzuschätzen, zu irreführenden Resultaten führt. Die Vorbereitung der uKf Prüfstücke war sehr schwierig und es wird vorgeschlagen, dass die Kapazität der Tunnelbaumaschine in Abhang der Is50 bestimmt wird.
