This publication contains analyses and related source data for 162 natural gas samples from 15 states and 4 foreign countries. Of the total samples, 154 were collected during calendar year 1992. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1992. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free-market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

"Cyclopentane, a flammable hydrocarbon, is being considered as a working fluid for waste heat recovery applications using Organic Rankine Cycles with Direct Evaporators. A postulated failure mode consisting of a pinhole leak in a heat exchanger tube raises safety concerns due to autoignition of the working fluid. Experiments were conducted to determine the ignition delay time (IDT) of cyclopentane using an Ignition Quality Test™ (IQT™) device. Two sets of experiments were conducted per ASTM D6890 (with exception to charge pressure and temperature) to determine ignition delay of the fuel at atmospheric pressure for standard air (-20.95% oxygen) and vitiated air (13.3% oxygen) at a temperature of 803 K. Operation of the IQT device at a much lower pressure (1 bar) than normal operation (21.4 bar) with a standard injector led to very rich conditions and wetting of the stainless steel chamber walls. Catalytic effects are postulated to produce the small IDTs observed. Experiments were repeated with a modified injector to prevent wall wetting, resulting in average IDTs that are substantially longer.IntroductionCyclopentane is being considered for use as a working fluid in a Direct Evaporator of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). In this configuration, the heat exchanger is placed directly in the flow of the hot exhaust gas, rather than using a secondary heat transfer loop to isolate the flammable working fluid from the heat source. This configuration offers the advantages of approximately 15% lower cost and improved efficiency over a standard ORC. However, placing a heat exchanger operating with a flammable hydrocarbon in the hot exhaust gas stream presents potential safety risks. If a pinhole leak were to occur in the heat exchanger, working fluid could leak into the hot exhaust stream. Gas turbine exhaust is provided to the Direct Evaporator at a temperature of approximately 803 K, whereas the autoignition temperature of cyclopentane is 634 K (Gallant and Yaws, 1993). Autoignition of the working fluid has been identified as the key risk for this type of system.Autoignition occurs when sufficient self-heating by chemical reactions takes place to accelerate reaction rates to produce full-scale combustion. This is in contrast to forced ignition, in which an external source (e.g., spark) is employed to initiate the combustion process. For combustion to occur, the fuel to oxidizer concentration must be between the lower (lean) and upper (rich) flammable limits. The reaction rate depends on the species concentration of the fuel and oxidant, the local temperature and pressure. Ignition processes are comprised of steps that take a fmite amount of time. This latent period prior to the start of combustion is referred to as ignition delay time (IDT)."

The Yayoi period, from about 300 B.C. to A.O. 300, represents a time of important changes in Japanese history. During this period the advanced rice culture of the Asian continent was introduced to Japan, along with the techniques of animal husbandry, spinning, bronze casting and metal working(1) . As was the case in the Jomon period (11000 B.C. to 300 B.C.), the Yayoi period is traditionally defined by a particular type of pottery, characterized by the use of the potter's wheel and an extreme simplicity of decoration and form(2) . Pieces of this pottery were found in 1884 in a district of Tokyo, known as Yayoi-Cho, not far from Tokyo University. Within a decade the name Yayoi had come to be used for the period which also saw the first casting of metals in Japan121. During the Yayoi period, the foundation of the ancient Japanese state was laid as the individual small communities were unified and as labour specialization and social levels developed. In fact, the Yayoi may be the true ancestral culture of Japan(3) . However, the origin of the Yayoi is not definitely known. One theory indicates that the Yayoi people may have been driven from the Asian mainland (via Korea) by the dynastic wars that accompanied the unification of China under the Ch'in and Han and that these settlers rapidly displaced the Jomon. Bronze objects and the cultivation of rice may have arrived about the same time - in the third century B.C. Iron was in Japan within another century, but since it rusts badly and disintegrates, only a few small pieces are known from such an early date(4) . After about 50 B.C., the Yayoi cultures of western Japan were in fairly close and regular contact with the continent via Korea(5)

Recent research by the investigators has evaluated the oxidation roasting of refractory gold concentrates in the presence of hydrated lime. (Taylor, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993). These results have indicated that it may be possible to roast concentrates in such a way as to contain nearly all of the sulfur and arsenic in the roaster calcine and that cyanidation may be possible. To further evaluate the behavior of this type of roasting system a laboratory cyclone reactor was built and operated using pyrite and hydrated lime as a .model system. Approximately 50 years ago, the principle of cyclone firing entered practical boiler construction. The appeal of the cyclone configuration was that it afforded the flash combustion process greater efficiency due to turbulence-induced increased mass transfer, heat exchange, and combustion rates.

"INTRODUCTION By far the greater part of the high-grade manganese ore used in the United States is imported from overseas. During the early part of the recent World War importations of manganese ore were seriously threated, and it appeared that it would be necessary to utilize low-grade domestic ores to the fullest possible extent. Among the processes that appeared to offer the best possibilities for beneficating low-grade domestic oxide manganese ores, which ordinarily are net readily amenable concentration by ore-dressing methods, were those involving leaching with sulfur dioxide. The Bureau of Mines therefore investigated the amenability of a large number of such ores to sulfur dioxide leaching.Several sulfur dioxide processes for beneficiating low-grade oxide manganese ores have been proposed. 3/ One of these, based on a patent by Van Arsdale and Maier, 4/ was used recently in a plant constructed to treat 1,000 tons per day of 20-percent manganese ore from the Three Kids deposit near Las Vegas, Nev. 5/ In this process the ore slurry is leached with sulfur dioxide gas, the resulting solution is evaporated to crystallize the manganese sulfate, the crystals are decomposed thermally to produce high-grade manganese oxide and regenerate sulfur dioxide, and the manganese oxide product is nodulized. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a process 6/ in which a suspension of the ore in calcium dithionate solution is leached with dilute S02 gas, the manganese is recovered from the resulting solution by a simple lime precipitation, and the precipitate is nodulized or sintered to form a high-grade manga¬nese oxide product."

An understanding of the origin of mineral deposits and their relationship to local and global geotectonics is essential if regional targets for mineral exploration are to be chosen. Volcanism, metamorphism and tectonism are especially significant for the origin and emplacement of mineral deposits, which, far from being fortuitous oddities of nature, occupy well defined positions within distinctive lithofacies. Thus, suggestions for mineral exploration targets can be made taking into consideration the position of 'fossil' convergent and divergent plate tectonic boundaries to indicate areas of specific types of mineralisation. To be borne in mind, though, that level of exposure, time and location of magma generation are all additional and important controlling factors. To further understand the importance of the above parameters, one must refer to the concept of paired metamorphic belts (Miyashiro 1973) which develop during an orognic cycle. These belts are generally constructed in such a way that an ophiolite type complex with metamorphic grades related to high pressure and moderate temperature regimes is flanked by an area of calc-alkaline volcanism and granitic activity with metamorphic grades within a region of high temperature and low pressure. The former situation is usually the seat of primary magmatic mineralisation, whereas the latter contains base metal. Deposits of acid plutonic and volcanic association. As will be seen later, this particular metamorphic-volcano-orogenic situation is well developed in some parts of New Zealand. For the present purpose a distribution of potential ores as related to plate tectonic processes is given below:a) Divergent plate boundaries: primary magmatic Ni-Cu, Pt,Cr, PeS2 and Cu, Pb,Zn in hot brines-hydrothermal environments Mn deposits.b) Convergent plate boundaries: stratabound Cu-Fb-Zn-Ag of felsic volcanogenic association. Porphyry eu-Au of island arc type, porphyry Cu-Mo of continental type. Cu, Au, Y, Sn, Hg, Sb of vein type and replacement lode related to granitic activity.c) Au of hydrothermal vein association, related to late dynamo-metamorphic events. By virtue of ocean floor spreading, regions of divergent plate boundaries are eventually juxtaposed or welded n to areas where plate collisions occur. This is then followed by partial melting due to various causes, just above the descending plate; thus creating a zone of acid to intermediate magmatism. The final picture is that of an orogenic zone with the paired metamorphic belts outlined above.

Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.

THE Geological Survey was created in 1842 to aid the development of Canada's mineral resources. Although the institution has been in existence for nearly 100 years and has accomplished an immense amount of work, the need for its services remains as great as ever and, indeed, it is difficult to imagine a time when the country will no longer require a Geological Survey. This is so because of the tremendous effort required to make an adequate geological examination of so large an area as is embraced by Canada and partly because what today may seem an adequate geological examination proves, later on, to be inadequate. The ultimate objective of the Geological Survey is to complete the study of all phases of the geology of Canada, that is, to determine how and when the physical features originated, how and when the soils and other unconsolidated deposits were formed, and how and when the solid rocks and associated deposits were produced and assumed their present conditions. When the study has been completed, any only then, will it be possible to make a reliable estimate of the country's mineral resources. This appraisal embraces more than determining the value of already discovered deposits: it also involves attempting to establish what kinds of undiscovered deposits may be present and where they may occur. The estimating of the potential mineral wealth can be clone only after the geology of the country is known. Not until then will it be possible to forecast what types of valued deposits may occur in a district and what types will almost certainly be lacking. A thorough knowledge of the geology of the country is desirable not only to permit estimating the potential mineral resources but also as an aid in locating and developing mineral deposits whether these are of the nature of a bed of limestone, a seam of coal, a reservoir of petroleum, a vein, an irregular body of sulphides, or any other type of deposit.

"The size distribution of coal mine dust is one of its most important characteristics because the particle size is known to govern the region of deposition of dust within the human respiratory tract. In addition, dust characteristics, particle settling rate, transportability of the dust and the efficiency of dust control measures are all affected by the particle size. As a result, particle size distribution of the airborne dust in a coal mine is a fundamental property that impacts on the health of underground workers.This paper deals with some basic findings on the size distribution of cool mine dust based upon the results of data collection in six underground coal mines using continuous miners. All airborne dust sampling was performed on development sections using eight stage cascade impactors and permissible 2. O l / min pumps. Samplers locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roofbolter or with respect to the intake and return airways • Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours , depending upon the dust concentration. The first topic of analysis was the test to determine whether the commonly used lognonnal distribution is valid when applied to airborne coal mine dust. Secondly, the conventional method of representing the· distribution using two parameters, the geometric mean and the geometric standard deviation, is questioned. Since almost all size data were found to show some degree of bimodality, the two parameter lognonnal distribution may not represent the total airborne coal mine dust size , quite adequately. Bimodal lognonnal distribution was tested to be a good approximation in the case with two modes in the size distribution.The final topic discussed in this paper is the 'locational variation of the airborne dust size distributions within the continuous mining section. The size distributions varied considerably at the different sampling locations with the continuous miner and roofbolter producing the coarser distributions. Fine size modes in the range of 2 to 4µ m including mostly respirable dust particles were present in almost all samples • Second dust generating sources such as the shuttle car movement were found to be major causes of high respirable dust concentrations in some cases ."

Historically, the presence of methane has been a problem, mainly in and around the working areas of active coal mines, and only in these area has drainage been considered. Drainage, where practical, has been achieved through the drilling of holes forward into the coal and the surrounding strata from the working area. These holes generally have been short in length, although where methane drain- age operations around a longwall face have been undertaken, the holes have had to be longer in order to adequately drain from the center of the face into the access gate roads. In recent years, attempts have been made to degasify the coal seams in advance of mining, without disruption of the mining cycle. This is done by drilling much longer horizontal holes through the coal in advance of the working area. Under the aegis of the Federal Government, methods have also been developed for draining seams of coal of their methane content in advance of mining, but from shafts sunk from the surface, without using the active area of the mine as the location for the drill holes.

In another paper the author described the electrolytic preparation of highly-purified lead. One of the most difficult parts, yet perhaps the most essential part, of that research was to ensure, firstly, that the purification process should be effective; secondly, that it should remain effective; thirdly, that the lead should not be contaminated during the tests that were done on it. All this necessitated periodic analyses of the lead.The purpose of this paper is to describe the work done by the author to check the accuracy of some known rapid methods for the estimation of impurities in highly-purified lead, with the intention of applying them to the control of the electrolytic process above-mentioned.METHODS ALREADY IN USEThe literature sets out accurate methods for the estimation of impurities in lead, but these methods are both lengthy and expensive. For example, the method described by Hemingway is used in the Port Pirie laboratory of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., but it requires a sample as large as 1000 grm., and the time required to analyse a sample extends over days, and is too long to allow of quick control over a running process. This method was used by the Associated Smelters to obtain the analyses quoted in another paper by the author.

Studies were undertaken to investigate the effects of manganese content on the machinability and other Properties of a free machining martensitic stainless steel (AISI Type 416). Machinability was found to be significantly improved in steels of high manganese content, and a direct relationship was obtained between machinability and steel Mn:S ratio. As the manganese content of the steel increases, the sulfide Phase present changes from CrS to (FeMn)Cr2S4 to (MnFeCr)S, and finally to MnS. The average sulfide inclusion hardness decreases through the same range of increasing manganese content. The mechanism for machinability improvement is discussed in terms of a soft ductile sulfide affecting deformation in the secondary shear zone. Type 416 containing relatively high manganese for improved machinability shows good general properties. The effects of increasing manganese content on mechanical properties, cold formability, and corrosion resistance are described. THE addition of sulfur is commonly used to improve the machinability of stainless steels. However, little attention has been paid in the past to the composition and characteristics of the sulfur-containing phase or phases present in these resulfurized steels. Recent information on the properties of sulfide phases, and their role in metal cutting, suggests that variations in these phases could have critical effects on machin-ability, as well as important effects on formability and other properties such as corrosion resistance. Manganese, chromium, and iron are strong sulfide forming elements present in stainless steels! of these, manganese has the greatest sulfide forming tendency and iron the least.1"1 The manganese content of resul-furized 13 pct Cr steels, often about 0.5 pct, can be insufficient or only barely sufficient to combine with the sulfur that is present; thus, the precise level of manganese can strongly influence the nature of the sulfide phase. Sulfide phases which may be present in stainless steels have been reported to include CrS, a spinel-type sulfide, chromium-rich manganese sul-fide, and manganese Sulfide.5,6 Detailed phase relationships for the Fel3Cr-Mn-S system have been reported by the present investigators,7 and a portion of this work will be referred to subsequently in this paper. Recent work by Kiessling6 and Chao et a1.8 has shown that sulfide phases can display wide variations in hardness, and may undergo considerable plastic deformation under isostatic loading.9-12 Early theories of metal cutting attributed the influence of sulfur to a lubricating effect. It is now apparent that the influence of the nonmetallic inclusions and their properties on crack initiation, deformation in the shear zones, and boundary films must also be considered in relation to the machining process. This paper presents the results of studies conducted to relate machinability to the various sulfide phases which occur in stainless steels. This work has led to the development of alloys with improved machinability, and has generated information on the effects of inclusions on metal cutting processes. Effects of sulfide inclusions and steel composition on other important metallurgical properties are also discussed. MATERIALS For drill machinability and inclusion studies, 10 lb laboratory heats were melted in an air induction furnace. These heats were made with sulfur contents be tween 0.10 and 0.50 pct and manganese contents be tween 0.05 and 3.0 pct. Residual elements were added to the heats in amounts typical for commercial steels. The typical compositional range covered by the heats is shown below: C Mn P S Si Ni Cr Mo Cu N 0.10 0.05 0.007 (M0 0.40 0.40 13.0 0.20 0.10 0.03 3.0 0750 The laboratory ingots were forged in the temperature range of 1800" to 2100°F to 3/4-in. sq bars, and all bars tempered to a hardness aim of 200 Bhn prior to testing. Because of differences in composition and tempering response, the tempered bars showed some variation in hardness (175 to 275 Bhn) as well as variations in delta ferrite content (0 to 50 pct). Composition, hardness, and delta ferrite content were considered in the analysis of the machinability data. Additional tests involving tool-life evaluation and determination of other properties were conducted on materials from commercially melted and processed 15-ton electric furnace heats. TESTS AND PROCEDURES Machinability of the laboratory heats was evaluated in a drill test. In this test, 1/4-in. diam holes, 0.4 in. deep, were drilled alternately in a test bar and in a standard bar for a total of four holes in each. This sequence was repeated three times using a freshly sharpened drill each time. The average time required to drill a hole in the test bar was compared to that for the standard bar. Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separators, for short, WHIMS are used for recovery of Iron ores with low magnetic susceptibility. A Jones patent WHIMS with "grooved plates" matrix is being used in Dry Tailing processing line in Hematite Recovery Plant at Golgohar mining & Industrial Co. for recovery of Hematite. In this kind of separators Matrices are used for increasing the Magnetic field intensity and providing high magnetic field gradient. The laboratory WHIMS in Golgohar Iron Ore and Steel research Institute is capable to provide a background magnetic field strength up to 0.85 Tesla and in presence of ‚expanded metal? matrix, magnetic field intensity could increase up to 0.9 Tesla. More than 50% of feed particles in this separator were finer than 36 micron and recovery of these particles needs more magnetic field intensity. Hence, ‚Grooved Plates? matrices with Js= 2 Tesla and 3.8 mm gap were constructed. Measurements indicated that magnetic field intensity around the matrix will increase to 1.25 Tesla. Graph of Magnetic field intensity around the matrix to background magnetic field intensity was plotted and a model with Rsquare= 0.9 was offered. In addition, magnetic field gradient and magnetic force were calculated. In WHIMS with feed top size of 150 micron, the main effective forces on separation process are the magnetic force and the hydrodynamic drag force. With assuming that the particles are smooth and spherical and the flow is laminar, Recovery of fine magnetic particles is problematic in this separator because of drag force. Considering these facts and mentioned model, finest particles that are recoverable in different magnetic field intensities were calculated. Computations illustrated that with magnetic field intensity more than 0.8 Tesla, particles as fine as 4 micron are theoretically separable but it should be noted that in practice a larger attractable particle size would be expected.

Piles are frequently subjected to lateral forces and moments in addition to vertical forces and hence the piles have to be designed for both lateral loads as well as vertical loads. In the design of such pile foundations, two criterias must be satisfied. First an adequate factor of safety against ultimate failure and second, as acceptable deflection at working loads. In this study the work has been carriedout to study the lateral deflection pattern of the pile. The solutions to the problem primarily depend on soil modulus. Equations for computing the values of slope, deflection and coefficients for many types of soil conditions have been developed for static loading for long piles. As analysis part is not available for the above methods for the values of depth coefficients in the tables. It is required to go for linear interpolation which is not valid and highly unreliable. In this present method, coefficients can be obtained for any value of depth coefficient (z) with simple calculation. The present method is very concise and allows one to ana­lyse any type of pile with varying depth coefficient (z) even without the availability of any practical data regarding applied lateral load (P1) and moment (M1).

Most coal mines in Chongqing Area are highly gassy mines and liable to outburst of coal cnd methane. In order to harness mine environment and raise the Prodction capacity, methane predrainage is generally taken as a main preventive measure against outburst by all mines. In the recent ten years, the drainage volume per year has increased from 38.25 million m3 to mote than 100 million m3 with a volume over 12 m3 per tome of coal. In some mines, the draining rate is approaching to 50 percent, the rate in mining districts is up to 60 to 70 percent. The predrainage volume accounts for one fourth of total drainage volume. All these have effectively prevented the occurrence of coal and methane outbursts.This is the current situation of methane predrainage in coal mines in Chongqing area, the methods of predrainage to prevent outbursts and related parametres comprise:1. methods, technologies, supervision and effect of predrainage in different geological and mining conditions,2. the change of methane parametres pre-and post-drainage and the analysis of the effect of methane predrainage to prevent outbursts, and3. ways to improve the effect of methane predrainage.Thus the safety, reliability and production of Changqing Coal Mines will be enhanced.

Finnish mining traditions date back 400 years. The country was then one of Europe's major iron producers. Most of the mines in current operation, however, were started during the last 20 to 30 years. The Finnish mining industry must make do with limited resources. Deposits are usually low grade and small in size. Open-pit methods are used where possible. But thin ore bodies and harsh winters can impose severe restrictions. Underground mining is often the only option. Despite these handicaps, Finnish metal miners produce copper, nickel, zinc, vanadium, iron ore, cobalt, and ferrochrome. Ironically, the success of Finnish mining is rooted in a crisis the industry faced several decades ago. Mining costs were rising. High grade mineral deposits were nearly exhausted. It was vital that Finland develop new mining machinery and methods that afforded higher productivity. Cooperation between the Finnish mining industry and its equipment manufacturers was good. Partly as a result, the Finnish mining industry has turned itself into one of the most modern and efficient in the world. The Finns did this while continuing to meet the stringent safety and environmental requirements in force in the Nordic countries. Today, the share of domestic raw materials used by the Finnish metallurgical industry is decreasing. So the country increasingly depends on imports of ores and concentrates. To better provide these imports, Finnish mining companies have expanded their foreign operations. And, while importing raw materials, the mining industry has been exporting its technological and equipment know-how and expertise. Mining methods Conventional mining methods and machinery are used in surface mines. Drilling is the exception. It is done with Tamrock hydraulic track drills and 100 to 150 mm-diam (4 to 6-in.-diam) drill holes. Pumpable slurry explosives are used in larger open pits. Underground, sublevel stoping with open stopes is the most common mining method. It accounts for about 80% of all underground stoping. The main benefits of this method are low production costs, high mechanization, and easy control. The best productivity figures exceed 10 t (11 st) per man-hour, including all mining personnel. The development of cable bolting has made it possible to use sublevel open stoping even in relatively weak rock. Cut-and-fill methods, such as concrete-pillar stoping, inclined-wall stoping, and traditional cut-and-fill have also been used, combined with sublevel caving and room-and-pillar methods, according to local demands. Various fill materials and stabilization components have been investigated and tested for cut-and-fill methods. Sublevel open stopes are often later filled, to stabilize the surface or to allow pillar recovery.

Threshold blasting involves the use of small amounts of high explosive to break and fragment hard rock without having to evacuate mining personnel. The method is easily assimilated and effective in rockbreaking, but requires rigid control on drilling, charging and timing. Current underground trials are aimed at fine-tuning the amount of explosive energy and blast hole geometry to allow the firing of multiple sets of shot holes in a continuous manner. Through correct procedures, the after-blast fumes, dust and fly rock can be contained so as to provide a safe working environment. Threshold blasting hugely reduces the volumes of explosives used in mining and brings to maturity the potential of the process begun by Alfred Nobel when he introduced nitroglycerine, and later dynamite, to mining. Its key contribution is its enabling of continuous mining operations with well understood and relatively low cost technologies. The use of batch blasting, employing large burdens holds the greatest potential for delivering high flow rates of ore at minimal cost. There is good potential for rapid evolution of the concept.
