A series of 15, stations beginning with Potsdam and Budapest and ending with Budapest and Potsdam were occupied inn the period August, 1908, to January, 1909. The intermediate stations were all at points which had been connected by Baron Eötvös with torsion-balance traverses. The observations were made with an invariable pendulum of the standard four-pendulum type of instrument of the Geodetic Institute, made by Stückrath at Berlin-Friedenau. The observations at each of the field stations lasted-one to three days with one exception; two or three time determinations were made; four to eight series of pendulum observations were made; the error of determination of the elevation of the instrument above mean sea level ranged from 0.30 meter to 1.10 meters, with the exception of the Arad and Baja stations, where the elevation was known more accurately and averaged about ± 0.8 m, which would cause an error of ± 0.25 x 10-3 dynes. No topographic correction was applied. The values for ?g were taken from Eötvös: Report on Geodetic Observations in Hungary, especially Observations with the Torsion Balance, Budapest, 1910. The differences in ?g as determined, by the torsion balance and by the unvariable pendulum were: Kuvin-Hidegkut 1.2 km. 0.001, Livada-Kuvin 9 km. 0.001, Pankota-Livada 13 km. 0.004, Kuvin-Arad 20 km. 0.000, Pankota-Arad via Kuvin 42 42 km.0.005, Pankota- Arad via Kurtics 50 km.0.000 dynes. Oltay concludes that if the stations are close enough together and if the terrane is rather flat, the measurement of ?g with the Eötvös torsion balance is as accurate as with the invariable pendulum. -- Donald C. INTRODUCTION At present, the capability of production planning software based on Linear Programming (LP) is still limited to the optimization of the single LP-run. This is due to the LP-model itself which cannot consider the interdependencies between individual LP- runs. With regard to planning of selective mining this limited way of optimization frequently leads to situations, where the remaining and accessible ore blocks do no longer allow to produce ROM-ore in the qualitative composition required by the ore processing plant. However, many of the aspects taken into consideration when setting up production plans built from mutually dependent LP-runs cannot be modelled in a system of linear equations. They are thus unsuited for treatment with LP and have to be taken care of by the planning engineer without any assistance by the system. The KBS currently under development is intended to assist the planning engineer in designing a production plan under special consideration of the combination of consecutive LP-runs and blending beds. It is not necessarily intended to find the optimum solution within a given planning situation which is, anyway, hard to determine due to the multitude of influences. The objective is rather to work out a good and - from the practical point of view - feasible production plan. The new aspect with respect to mine planning is the integration of expert knowledge and experiences via the KBS into the planning process in order to support the planning engineer. The planning system is being developed in close cooperation with an iron-ore open pit mine. COMPONENTS OF THE PLANNING SYSTEM The software is being developed on a workstation under UNIX and comprises the components LP, CAD-module and the KBS. The applied multi-goal LP-algorithm is an in-house development of the Department of Mining Engineering at Technical University Berlin. It was already successfully implemented within other mine planning programmes and was only slightly adapted to the specific needs of the present system. Within individual LP- runs it finds the optimum qualitative composition of ore production in the sense of the selected optimizing criterion and under the given restrictions: i.e. it determines tonnages to be mined from blocks in order to optimally meet the requirements of the ore pro- cessing plant. A CAD-module based on the commercial SURPAC package in combination with a simulation device is used to graphically depict the block model and progress of mining. Both LP-algorithm and CAD-package are integrated in the KBS. It has been decided to use the shell NEXPERT OBJECT as it is a hybrid system which supports both rule-based and object-oriented knowledge representation. MINE-MODEL AND LP-MODEL KBS have to be tailor-made for specific planning problems. Therefore, it had to be decided which specifications of the iron-ore mine should be represented in the model. As the limited possibilities of a university institute do not allow to develop a KBS for mine planning which is ready to use in industry, it was decided to concentrate on those characteristics that can be regarded as typical for iron-ore surface mines and that seemed to be suited for treatment with knowledge-based techniques. The following chapter summarizes the most important features of the mine model. The description of the requirements to the mine's sales products is followed by an outline of the applied LP-model. Mine model • The model of the mine as it is used for planning consists of • the block model of the deposit, • the mobile equipment, • stockpiles and blending bed and • the requirements to the sales products. The deposit is described by a block model which contains data on the chemical composition, LOI, grain size and tonnages. Grain size was included as it is important for the two sales products of the mine. Furthermore, it is known whichs blocks require and which don't require blasting; this is relevant to the assignment of loading equipment to individual blocks. The blocks are devided in three categories: • ore, which will directly be taken to the blending bed; • waste, which will be put on the waste dump; and • blocks which will be either transported to the blending bed, to stockpiles or to the waste dump depending on the specific planning situation. This decision is made during planning. Neighboring blocks are combined in mining areas to which the loading equipment is individually assigned. Mobile equipment comprises shovels and wheel-loaders as well as trucks. The characteristics of the loading equipment are important for their ability to load different blocks and for the permissible degree of their re-positioning etc. The mine disposes of a blending bed for homogenization of the production, of a waste dump, and of several stockpiles with different ore qualities. The requirement to make only limited use of the stockpiles for economic reasons is included in the KBS. According to long term planning two commercial products have to be produced, which differ both in grain size and qualitative composition (TABLE 1). Their mass-proportions in the blending bed have to be within a fixed range. Not considered in long term planning is the occasional need for lump ore, which occurs at very short notice and has to be produced in a "campaign-like" manner. As the flaws in the population balance model (PBM) comminution model are examined more deeply, further errors and problems were discovered. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations was used to solve the dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The fact that the PBM model equation Inverse Problem is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same PBM equations are provided. It is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the Arbiter-Bhrany normalization assumption. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution to a dynamic PBM, while giving the same prediction for a given grinding time interval, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. Actual experimental grinding data was assessed to determine the functionality of mill selection and breakage functions.

Within the mining industry computers have made their most significant impact with 3D design, visualisation and resource modelling/ optimisation. Recently, the application of computers to data gathering and accounting functions has also started to reap benefits. These two areas of application cover the beginning and end of the mining process. There has been limited use of computers on the middle section, the actual mining process. This is interesting when considering the relative proportion of overall mining costs that this section produces. There is a certain amount of irony in the lack of mining application software for developing accurate budgets compared to the systems/software then used to review performance against budget. Computers have been used extensively in the manufacturing industry to design, model and simulate the manufacturing process. This has not been extended to the mining process. But, we all strive to have an open pit that replicates a manufacturing plant û smooth, efficient, optimal production. If we could model mining operations with the confidence of plastic box makers we would reduce risk by an order of magnitude, improve planning and focus on value drivers. Cost û benefit analysis would be easy. The extrapolation of manufacturing to mining process models is difficult. The variables in the manufacturing process are fewer in number, have low volatility and are highly predictable. The time between a box falling on a conveyor belt and falling off is very consistent. Mining is quite the opposite. It has large numbers of variables, some of which are unpredictable and volatile. The time to fill an excavator bucket could vary by 30 per cent and the frequency distribution is unlikely to be a mathematically simple normal distribution. Further, each of these variables can be distorted by one-another û they are interrelated. The mining process is a disjointed flow of parcels whereas manufacturing is a controlled continuous feed. A loaded truck might join a ramp and follow a slow water cart up. This is the equivalent of a localised voltage drop on equipment in a manufacturing plant. The manufacturing plant is quite likely to rapidly recover to full capacity. Whereas the slow truck might throw the mining fleet cycle out of balance for hours û trucks queuing at the ROM bin and so on. A mining process simulation has been created that addresses these mining variable issues to produce a highly accurate model of the open pit mining process. The number of uses for such a model is growing rapidly as it is being utilised for a variety of projects within the industry. This paper discusses the need for and application of mining process models.

Experiment results and operation practice on reutilizing old tailings dumped at SCIM (Shang-chang Iron Mine) of KISCO (Kunming Iron and Steel Corp.) are presented. In a production period over 30 years SCIM dumped about 8 million tons of iron ore tailings. For improving resources utilization instead of wasting, experiments on processing for reutilization of the old tailings are con-ducted. These tailings are fine size fractions of weathered iluvial ores rejected out by classification- des-liming in ore washing and dressing processes, containing TFe 21%~22% in hematite mainly and limonite occasionally. Their particle size distribution, in average, is of 72.26% minus 0.037mm and 30.88% minus 0.005mm. Existence of plenty of micro-fine particles makes the tailings refractory to process, resulting in poor metallurgy. The whole sample of the old tailings without size-classification is fed into experimental process. Slon-100 type high grads WHIMS (wet high intensity magnetic separator) with cyc-pulsing is adopted, which magnetism-focusing rod?s diameter is changed from 3mm into 2mm. Operational conditions of optimizing rougher separation tests are strengthened. An iron concentrate assaying 52.21% Fe at quantity rate of 18.39% and iron recovery of 44.40% is obtained. Operational practice shows that metallurgy and economy of the old tailings treatment are close to what achieved at experiments. It is estimated, therefore, that some 1.4 million tons of this iron concentrate may be recovered from the old tailings. This means that KISCO has moved its key one-step in re-mining and reutilizing the secondary resources, which would be a good demonstration in this industry. This is also of social and economic significance in response to China government?s request on reducing consumption of resources and establishing society with economy for achieving sustainable development.

Rheological measurements have found a wide array of applications in mineral processing research. Rheological properties of mineral suspensions are highly dependent on the mineral surface properties as described by DLVO theory, and the relationship between these properties and inter-particle interactions is well established. In this paper, rheological properties of mineral suspensions are used to study the differences in behaviour of isotropic talc and anisotropic zirconia minerals as a function of varying properties of the suspension medium, such as pH and polymer dosage, specifically carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). It was found that the rheological tests when carried out in parallel with electrophoretic or point of zero charge measurements, clearly reveal differences between behaviour of the suspensions of isotropic and anisotropic minerals. These differences are further accentuated with the addition of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).

IN a recent technical paper of the Central Committee of the French Coal Mines (Note technique No. 198, by L. Lahoussay) the author points out that continuous in¬crease in depth of mine shafts makes it more and more necessary to look for appropriate means to reduce the weights and dimensions of the hoisting ropes. Increasing depth demands a larger section and weight for the cable if the useful load is not to be cut down at the same time. This naturally leads to increased cost per ton, and at the same time creates serious mechanical difficulties. The dimensions of the hoisting engine must be increased, acceleration at the start must be decreased so as to avoid periods of excessive peak power loads, and a longer time be allowed to slow down the speed of the hoist when applying brakes. The hoisting rope, upon which depend the dimensions and hence the mass of the hoisting engine, presents the greatest obstacle to the development of hoisting from greater depths. Evidently, for a given depth, the total weight of the rope can be notably reduced by utilizing a wire rope of decreasing section, approaching the theoretical logarithmic form. This is a solution frequently adopted for great depths. Of course, the weight of the rope could be easily' diminished by reducing the useful load, but it is certain that with increasing depth of mining, more effort must be made to confine the hoisting to a small number of shafts, and increase the load hoisted per trip.

Ground control hazards, coal quality, ore reserve estimation, and pollution modeling seem unrelated topics from most mining perspectives. However, geostatistical methods can be used to characterize each of these, and more topics. Exploratory drill core data, and continued drilling and field measurements, can provide a wealth of information related to each of the above areas and are often severely underutilized. Recent studies have led to the development of the Multiple Parameter Mapping (MPM) technology, which utilizes geostatistics and other numerical modeling methods, to generate a "hazard index" map, often from exploratory drill core data. This mapping has been presented for ground control hazards relating roof quality, floor quality, numerically modelled stresses due to mining geometry, and geologic features. A review of the MPM method, future directions with the MPM, and a discussion of using these and other geostatistical methods to quantify coal quality, ore reserve estimation, and pollutant modeling are presented in this paper.

The Bureau of Mines has developed two experimental designs for deter- mining the volumes and relative proportions of the various gas species, particularly methane (CH4), occluded in rock salt. To date, the rock salt samples analyzed have been relatively small (400- to 1,000-gram) grab samples from Louisiana Gulf Coast domal salt mines. The results obtained are comparable to results in Polish domal salt mines, in terms of occluded gas volumes per mass of rock salt. The notable difference between the Louisiana and Polish occluded gas mixtures is in the relative proportions of the individual gas species. The two methods used by the Bureau are ballmill crushing and dissolution. Of the two, the dissolution method appears to be more versatile because it can be performed in situ. The relevance and applicability of data on the occluded gas contents of rock salt are dependent on sample size, sample collection method, geologic context of the sample, and the correlation with gas emissions that occur as a result of mining-induced fractures and pressure differentials.

Ore deposits in the Southern Appalachians are ( 1) sedimentary or syngenetic, ( 2) epigenetic, and ( 3) residual. In general, deposits characteristic of high temperature and pressure are found in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces and those of low and intermediate temperature and pressure, including the sedimentary ores, are found in the Valley and Ridge and Appalachian Plateaus provinces. Residual deposits are present throughout the area. Recognition of several periods of intrusion and metamorphism in the Appalachians has changed former concepts which held that most mineralization was of late Paleozoic age in a zonal pattern including all four provinces. Many deposits probably are of early or midPaleozoic age. Similarly, recent studies in geomorphology indicate that the formation of residual deposits is a continuous process and not related to specific cycles of peneplanation.

Ground instability is among the major causes of serious incidents and production disruptions in the mining industry and has a significant impact on safety. Mining companies may have operations in a number of jurisdictions with varied regulatory requirements for ground control management. As these companies expand into countries where mining regulations are formative or lacking clear definition, ground control practices are usually developed by local mine personnel based on their experience. In many cases, inconsistent procedures and standards are generated, which can lead to an increase in occurrence of underground incidents due to difficulties and confusion in implementation. This situation has forced some mining companies to standardize their ground control practices by geographic regions or divisions. Though this approach is an improvement, it may not lead to effective management of ground control issues across all operations of a global mining company. Barrick Gold Corporation, with operations in North and South America, Australia and Africa, decided to adopt a global approach to ground control management. This global approach requires all Barrick operations to prepare and implement an effective ground control management plan (GCMP) based on site specific conditions and company guidelines. It is also required that the GCMP be developed through application of sound geotechnical engineering practices and be consistent with local regulatory requirements and Barrick safety policies. All Barrick underground operations have GCMPs in place, and its surface operations are now involved in the initiative. This paper presents Barrick?s global approach to underground mine ground control management and outlines the content and process for the development of a GCMP.

A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. Local soils, typically dermosols and vertosols derived from sandstones or overlying basalt flows, are suited to grazing but are marginal for cropping.CITATION:Clewett, J F, Newsome, T, Paton, C, Bennett, J, Melland, A, Eberhard, J and Baillie, C, 2018. Cryogenic grinding of Printed Circuit Board will bring less pollution, reduce energy costs, smaller particles, regular particle size, efficient process, separation various materials due to different fracture toughness. Systemic studies of recycling discarded Printed Circuit Board (PCB) by low-temperature modification and cryogenic grinding have been made in this paper. Firstly test mechanical property of PCB at different low-temperature, including impact strength, flexural strength, and shear strength. Do experiment on the power consumption of different cooling temperature, The results show that the average power consumption is lower between -30? to -60? and the average power is decrease in evidence at -30?. Use ZKB type double roll shear crusher to crush PCB to 20mm×20mm particle size, in a temperature range of -10 ~ -30? Used R type mill to grind sample to minus 3mm under different working condition, the average power consumption is decrease in evidence from -10 ? to -30 ?, power consumption is the lest at rotational speed is 1180rpm.

Experience indicates that rockbolting is the most efficient and cost effective means of supporting gateroads of retreating longwalls. However, gateroads supported solely by rockboltiug currently accounts for less than 16% of the 4500km of annual gatemad drivage in China According to a stated target of the Ministry of Coal Industry, this percentage should be at least 50% by the year 2000. Since the learning stage of the technology which is indicated by low drivage rates and frequent roof falls in rockbolted gateroads must be overcome , strategies for the application of rockbolting to gateroads have become the focus of discussions on this topic. This pap presents the recent development on longwall gateroad rockbolting technology in China The development work has concentrated on understanding the mechanism of rockbolting; establishing new design procedures of bolting parameters fix gateroad support upgrading the consumable; optimizing bolt installation procedures; adopting better roofbolting machines; and developing adequate secondary reinforcement technique. The authors believe that this development work together with the on-going wok in other aspects of gaterosd rockbolting, as discussed in this paper 9 represent the rational strategies for the application of rockbolting technology to a wider range of longwall gateroads in Chinese d mines .

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of lignite char for producing carbon disulfide; CS2 production rates were as high as when wood charcoal was used as raw material. The maximum space velocity for CS2 produced in the bench-scale study was 9,280 hour-1, reacting sulfur and lignite char at 792° C. The reaction temperature and the temperature at which the char was carbonized were the two most important factors in determining CS2 production rates. Increasing the carbonization temperature in nitrogen from 400° to 900° C advanced the temperature at which carbon disulfide was first produced from 550° to 850° C. The average activation energy for reacting chars with sulfur was 44,000 cal/g mole. The reaction was first order with respect to the partial pressure of sulfur. Increasing the rate of sulfur admission caused a decrease in rate of production at otherwise similar conditions. Rates were not affected by either char size or sodium carbonate catalysis. High space velocities at moderate temperatures using inexpensive lignite chars could offer an economic advantage in the manufacture of carbon disulfide provided that yields were attractive.

To speed up multivariate geostatistical simulation it is common to transform the set of attributes into spatially uncorrelated factors that can be simulated independently. One decorrelation method is the method of minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF), where a two structure linear model of coregionalisation is assumed. The transformation decorrelates the theoretical model exactly, but the actual data are only approximately decorrelated. The MAF transformation can therefore be seen as a special case of a non-orthogonal approximate diagonaliser of a set of symmetric matrices. A more general approach for approximate joint diagonalisation (AJD) has been developed in the context of blind source separation. For these AJD algorithms no assumptions are made beyond symmetry of the individual matrices and so they can be applied to a family of experimental semivariogram matrices. In their application there are no restrictions on the number of structures in the linear model of coregionalisation (LMC) thus removing one of the conditions placed on the subsequent modelling of the spatial structure of the factors. In this paper the general background for the U-WEDGE AJD method is presented. It is shown that the U-WEDGE method achieves better spatial decorrelation than the MAF method. The factors derived from U-WEDGE are simulated using conditional turning bands simulation and then backtransformed to attribute space.

"The main objective of this research is to identify the mechanisms of control of respirable dust generation in coal mines. Full understanding of the mechanics of crack propagation in coal is of fundamental importance in studies of the generation and control of respirable dust.The main objectives of this fracture investigation are: 1) to determine reliable data on the fracture toughness of coal as a parameter controlling unstable crack propagation; 2) to determine fracture propagation velocity in coal providing data on the terminal velocity at which crack bifurcation occurs and fine fragments of coal material are generated; and 3) to apply the critical strain energy density criterion to model mixed mode crack propagation in coal.The development of the protocol, laboratory procedure and equipment necessary to conduct an extensive mixed mode fracture toughness testing program has been completed. About 80 mixed mode fracture toughness tests, 10 good fracture velocity records and over 50 fracture surface examination with the SME are available. The details of the mixed mode fracture toughness testing are available in a paper titled, ""Development of Mixed Mode Testing System for Geologic Materials"" which is available from the center. The average fracture toughness and critical strain energy density values for the three seams investigated to date are included in the attached Figures 71, 72, 73."

Federal Regulations require that coal producers conduct a written, in-house investigation with every lost time injury accident. Besides their obvious value in accident prevention, competently conducted investigations can provide a number of additional benefits to include positive supervisor involvement, the control of rising worker's compensation costs and a measure of protection from civil/criminal proceedings. The paper describes such topics as MSHA minimum requirements, investigator selection and training, accident site procedures, witness interview techniques and the management review process. The reader is also presented with a number of information resources available through MSHA, the National Safety Council and other sources.

STRATEGIC METALS! Recently, this money accented cry has been heard in such diverse locales as Mining company boardrooms, Banker's offices, Stockbroker's quarters, Swindler's dens and Congressional committee rooms. (In some cases, these locales are one and the same). Is the strategic metals rush for real? Should it be? Our paper attempts to give a very generalized view of the subject for a few metals, points to a few potential, but generally overlooked sources of these metals, and offers conclusions based on our studies.
