Underground coal mines in Australia have embraced the use of various inertisation techniques both proactively and reactively. The use of such techniques can have a significant influence on ratios and trends used to monitor the status of the underground environment. Whilst control strategies should never be ignored in favour of preserving the integrity of ratios, the influence and significance of the changes likely to be seen should be anticipated and understood for reliable interpretation of the situation. Zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4), one of the major forms of zinc in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust and zinc leaching residue, is very difficult to chemically dissolve in either acidic or alkaline solutions. In spite of the zinc resources in the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust and zinc leaching residue are abundant, there is no mature utilization technology. This situation not only causes the waste of resources, but also produces the harm to the environment. In the paper, the basic principle of this process has been established by revealing the phase equilibria in the CaO–Fe2O3–ZnO system, where Ca2Fe2O5 can be in equilibrium with ZnO rather than ZnFe2O4 at higher CaO region. It has also been demonstrated that the formed ZnO can be solved by ammonia-leaching and Ca2Fe2O5 keep in solid residue, which can be used as a flux for steel refining.

The Wobbler Feeder is a comparatively new materials handling and separating device. It is essentially a materials separating or scalping machine, particularly adaptable to separation of oversize particles from mine-run ore and to the separation of oversize materials from overburden, where the removal of oversize materials is necessary, as is the case in conveyor stripping. In construction, the Wobbler Feeder is simply a set of transverse bars of manganese steel, or other wear-resisting alloy steel, each having an elliptical cross-section with the major axes of adjacent bars displaced by ninety degrees so when rotating in unison, the pre-determined space between the bars remains constant.

It is known that the introduction of electronic timing in the sequencing of blasting has changed the vision and way in which mining is developed. It is possible to deal with more complex and sophisticated drilling designs, without compromising productivity or safety. It has been shown in various studies, that a correct timing of the blasting provides an improvement in the improvement of the processes downstream, due to a decrease in the resistance of the resulting fragments coming from the interaction of the waves generated in the detonation of explosive loads. On the other hand, it has also been shown that variations in the composition of a same type of explosive, has a significant influence over the resistance of the blasted material, also the energy associated to break it, affecting directly its degree of fragmentation. This paper is aimed to display the new advancements of blasting engineering done in different mining sites throughout the country, associated to electronic sequencing, energy of the explosive and its impact on the fragmented rock. This document explains how to define and implement selective sequencing in the blasting in order to promote the propagation of cracks, therefore impacting positively the productivity through the use of the LaGrange diagram. The LaGrange diagram is a very convenient and illustrative method to present the dynamic behavior associated with wave and crack propagation (Rossmanith. H, 2002). This study focused on the methodology of the formation and measurement of seismic pulses, through the rock massif. For this purpose, seismic pulses were acquired in the field and then, the different dynamic phases of the wave were molded mathematically, with the purpose of favoring the coupling between them.

The Bureau of Mines studied environmental blast effects in six occupied residential structures. Airblast, ground, and structure vibrations were measured both inside and outside residences for seven quarry production blasts. Walls and floors responded to the blast noise and vibration by shaking at their own natural frequencies, often with greater peak particle velocities than the ground outside the structures or their foundations. The vibrations of the houses generated noticeable internal noise, correlating with the arrival of the groundborne energy. The later arriving airblast wave was predominantly at low infrasonic frequencies (1.0 to 1.5 Hz) and had similar amplitude and frequency characteristics both inside and out-side the structures. Significant structural motions resulted from the air-blast overpressures for at least two of the seven blasts. The most severe airblast effect occurred at a house 1,800 feet from a 5,047-pound (200-lb/ delay) blast. This stucture was subjected to a peak 0.16-in/sec particle velocity and 130 dB(L) airblast. The wall of the second floor responded to the ground vibration and airblast by shaking at particle velocities of 0.15 and 0.28 in/sec, respectively. Analysis of these data and those from additional field studies will be used to identify appropriate, safe, and reasonable impulsive noise levels, measurement techniques, and factors of design applicable to minimizing the adverse environmental effects of blasting.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the methane content of a coal, which depends primarily upon rank and pressure, from the adsorption equation V kpn, where k and n are constants related to rank. By incorporating corrections for moisture, ash, and temperature, and estimating pressure and temperature as a function of depth, the methane content of coal in place can be estimated from the following equation: [ ] Values calculated with this equation generally are in reasonable agreement with direct determinations. By assuming a standard moisture and ash content, and using the hydrostatic head to estimate pressure, a graph of rank and depth versus gas content was constructed. Although estimated values were consistently high for several high-volatile bituminous coals from an area where the pressure is known to be less than hydrostatic, the estimated methane content for most coals shows reasonable agreement with values determined by the direct method.

Operations downstream of mining and beneficiation are still being subjected to increasing scrutiny as highly capitalized projects have been either slow to achieve their targets or have actually failed to do so. Leaching and smelting projects have fundamentally high calls on capital and technology as reaction rates are increased and the capture and disposal of unwanted products are subjected to greater restrictions. Separating value from waste inherently becomes riskier as the purification of the desired product imposes greater demands on the process to produce benign wastes. When we superimpose on the chemistry of the project severe predictions of throughput rates, that bring in facets of manufacturing, we are introducing complexities that the records show are not handled well. This paper discusses some of the more common challenges that operators face and what methods are available and are likely to be successful in preventing the loss of value as projects are brought on-stream. This thinking needs to start much earlier and at greater intensity than our industry has normally chosen to employ.

Iron-free titanium oxycarbonitride (TiOxCyNz) is a promising feedstock for production of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) at low temperatures. In this study, the effects of leaching variables such as temperature, time, particle size of staring material and concentration of the leaching solutions were evaluated on iron removal from nitrided Malaysian ilmenite by Becher process. The nitrided ilmenite was prepared by isothermal reduction with graphite at 1200 °C for 3 h in H2-N2 atmosphere. The aerated leaching experiments were conducted at 50–90 °C with addition of 0.3–2.0 wt% of NH4Cl catalyst. The highest extent of iron removal (XFe) was obtained at about 96.2% for the sample leached at 90 °C for 7 h with 2.0 wt% NH4Cl. The iron concentrate and titanium oxycarbonitride product were characterized by ICP-OES, XRD, XRF and SEM-EDX analyses. The results indicated that the aeration leaching process was a successful route to prepare low-iron titanium oxycarbonitride.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 377 natural gas samples from 19 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 373 samples were collected during calendar year 1970. The remaining four samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting per-mission to publish the analyses were not received until 1970. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Twelve previous publications have presented the results of 9,050 gas analyses prior to 1970. This paper presents the results of 18 high-G centrifuge tests performed at the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal Cleaning Test Facility in January 1985. These tests, using -28 mesh (0.6mm) froth flotation product, show that the high-G, solid-bowl centrifuge can produce clean-coal moistures of less than 12 percent at solids recovery rates exceeding 98 percent. The high-G centrifuge achieved these low moistures by applying centrifugal forces up to 2,000 times gravity. Because these forces are two to three times the forces used in a screen-bowl centrifuge, the high-G centrifuge can use a solid bowl and still produce a low-moisture product. The solid bowl captures ultrafines that would pass through a screen bowl, and thus obtains higher recovery rates than a screen-bowl centrifuge.

PRODUCTION COSTS, profits, and quality are the primary factors in the peacetime production of iron and steel. In a war emergency, as high production rates and as complete utilization of readily available raw materials as possible, consistent with securing passable quality, become the most important factors. In this connection a discussion of some of the recent developments in the German iron and steel industry, where the problem of scarcity has naturally always been more acute than in the U.S.A., maybe of interest. To get more pig iron out of the existing blast furnaces it was necessary to obtain the maximum efficiency from the iron-bearing raw materials. This was achieved by eliminating all "excess baggage," chiefly by beneficiating the ore. The preparatory work for this was done by various methods which are effective when the ore either is too poor or contains too many impurities or too much gangue. Some of the beneficiation methods are well known, some are combinations of wet-mechanical, magnetic, roasting, sintering, and other treatments.

Scattering of delay interval around nominal value is an important issue in blasting practice. The scatter interval, as becomes wider, increases a probability of time delay overlapping adjacent blastholes. An excessive flyrock, ground vibrations, air blast and poor fragmentation are the symptoms for scattering related problems. Utilization of the short delays in the blastholes and longer delays on the surface are recommended solution to overcome mentioned problems. In contrast to global trends manifested through the application of electronic detonators and non-electric shock tube systems, revitalization of inexpensive electric detonators in combination with an accurate initiation system may be an acceptable solution. An extensive work was carried out at the Blasting Center Laboratory at the College of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade, to develop a precise initiation system. As a result, Sequential Blasting Initiation System – Radio Frequency (SBIS-RF) was developed. It is expected that this system will increase blasting productivity, and reduce negative environmental impacts and total blasting costs.

Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation is a high-capacity flotation technology originally developed in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah for processing mineral resources. However, the technology has been found to be useful in industrial waste processing, in the recycle of secondary resources, and in remediation of environmental problems. For example, areas in which the ASH technology is expected to have potential application include cleaning of waste coal fines, air stripping to remove volatile organics from drinking and process water, water disinfection by ozone or chlorine sparging, dispersed oil removal from water, and contaminated soil remediation. Recently, the ASH has been studied extensively for deinking flotation in the wastepaper recycling industry and has been shown to have excellent efficiency/capacity. In fact, a 20-million-dollar plant has been in operation since June 1992. The ASH technology can provide a specific capacity hundreds of times more than that which can be achieved with conventional flotation equipment and in certain instances is expected to provide superior separation efficiencies when compared to other technologies. The design and principles of ASH flotation are described. Experimental data for fine coal flotation, volatile organics stripping, and deinking flotation for paper recycle are presented and discussed. Finally, other potential areas of application for environmental technology are considered.

A Federal statute, enacted several years since, provides for the preparation of a geologic map of the United States. There are three requisites for a geologic map. The first is a suitable base- or surface-map upon which the rock-formations may be platted by means of conventions ; the second is a classification of the rocks and formations, and the third is a system of conventions by which the rocks and formations may be represented on the map. When the work of the Federal bureau created to prepare the geologic map was commenced, a topographic survey of the country was undertaken for the purpose of making maps suitable for the use of geologists in the field and for the representation of the geology; and this work has ever since been continued. The surveys have now extended over about one-fifth of the national domain, and are mapped on a series of atlas-sheets, each constituting a section of the great map of the United States. About 700 of these atlas-sheets are completed. They are in extended use among engineers, miners, prospectors, map-publishers and educators, and are thus widely known; moreover, these base-maps have been exhibited, described and discussed at meetings of the Institute, and thus do not require detailed consideration. "Cohoes, New York 12047 Intermetallics are an attractive class of advanced materials. The aluminide intermetallics offer advantages including: (1) lower density, (2) oxidation resistance, (3) carburization resistance, and (4) interesting mechanical properties because of their ordered crystal structure. Even though the attractive properties of the aluminides and other intermetallics have been known for nearly four decades, their practical applications have not been developed for two reasons: (1) the poor ductility (in some cases, both ambient and high temperatures) and (2) the lack of processability into meaningful components. Recent advances such as ductilization of Ni3Al by small additions of boron and the knowledge that environmental effects are the major cause of poor ductility in Fe3Al and FeAl systems have brought the intelmetallics into the forefront of research and their commercial applications. This paper has described a method for melting Ni3AI-based alloys that successfully utilize the exotherrn for the formation of NiAl from the elemental materials. The reaction-synthesis method has also been utilized for the production of NiAI and NiAI-based alloy powders from the elemental powders. The reaction-synthesized powders of NiAI and NiAI-based alloys were consolidated by hot extrusion and evaluated for tensile properties over a temperature range from room temperature to 1050ºC. The powder-processing conditions have been found to have more influence on the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of NiAI than the powder-production method.IntroductionIntermetallics are an attractive class of advanced materials [1-11]. Following initial plant scale work on the development and performance of 'spray' oil lances, a full scale room temperature model of the blowpipe-tuyere region of a blast furnace was built to study the basic aerodynamic features of auxiliary fuel injection procedures. Mobilwax 2305 was used as a substitute for Bunker C oil fuel in view of its similar physical properties and the fact that the atomised droplets could be frozen in flight and size, distribution analyses made for various operating procedures. It was shown that secondary atomisation processes far outweighed the importance of any primary atomisation procedures in determining mean Sauter Diameters particularly at high windrates typical of current blast furnace technology. It was also found that good spray dispersions across the blow pipe could only be obtaind for liquid fuels and that the lateral rate of spray dispersion was substantially enhanced by primary atomisation procedures. Mean particle diameters of sprays were found to be predictable on the basis of elementary stability theory and fell within the size range necessary for good combustion at all liquid fuel rates studied. The possible effects of high oil injection rates on flooding phenomena in the furnace bosh were considered. Comparisons show that high oil rates can lead to significant increases in the hanging factor (e.g. 'V 10% at 135 kg oil/thm) owing to increased gas flow rates/thm resulting from the presence of hydrogen.

Pastefill technology has gained an increasing popularity over the past decade. The main advantages are: environmental performance (mainly in tailings disposal), low operation costs and ease of operation, as well as homogeneous properties. However, its weaker nature compared to other types of fill makes it more vulnerable to blast damage. In the last few years, Louvicourt Mine has experienced some cases of pastefill sloughage during the mining of secondary stopes. In order to reduce pastefill sloughage, some studies have been undertaken to investigate the causes and to find possible solutions by looking at stope design, extraction sequence, ground support and blast design. This paper presents the results of a blast damage study carried out at Louvicourt on the 860m level. The instrumentation included vibration monitors (using 6 sets of triaxial geophones grouted in the pastefill), a borehole camera to observe the damage in the pastefill, and a cavity monitoring system for three-dimensional surveys of the blasted stope. The test stope was mined out by four slot blasts and three mass blasts. Most of the damage was created by the mass blasts. It was found that the accumulation of ground vibration was mainly due to the low seismic velocities in the pastefill and the relatively tight delay between blastholes. In addition, there was a substantial difference between the critical PPV in the confined and unconfined pastefill. In practice, these findings have led to modifications of blast design to minimise the exposure time of pastefill walls to air. Such modifications included changes of blast sequence in secondary stopes and delay layout between heavily loaded blastholes. Over the paste two years, the implementation of new blast sequence has shown encouraging results in terms of reduced pastefill sloughage and dilution.

The production of bituminous coal in Pennsylvania started a few years after that in Virginia. For forty-five years all the production came from the Pittsburgh bed, and since that time its total output in value has exceeded that of any other single mineral deposit in the world. It has been impossible to separate the outputs of the four counties producing it at that time, as none of it came from Greene County until many years later, and the figures in the first column of Table 49 represent all the coal coming from Allegheny, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland Counties. The years prior to 1790 are grouped on account of space limitations, they were made in the same manner as the later ones. All outputs have been rounded into hundreds, or thousands of tons because their accuracy does not warrant further subdivision. All figures are net tons, and all represent production and not shipments; this distinction in the early days when transportation facilities were scarce meant a great deal. In the period 1820-1835, more coal was used in salt-making in western Pennsylvania than for any other single purpose, but not a ton of such coal was handled by any transport agency. Later the iron industry used large quantities of local coal without shipment, and other instances can be cited. Prior to 1832, the only means of shipment of coal, excepting by wagons, was by the rivers, and this tonnage was larger than is generally believed. In Table 23, all of the available data about production from the Pittsburgh bed have been shown. After 1844 the river shipments above Pittsburgh are accurately reported by the Monongahela Navigation Company, but its figures do not include tonnage loaded on the river below Dam No. 1, nor that brought down Saw Mill Run. Prior to 1844 no tonnage records were kept although the amount moved was considerable. The information about local production, not shipped, whether used domestically or for manufacturing is necessarily incomplete. Column 7, shipments by railroad, river and canal, includes the figures in column 4, and until at least 1857 are quite evidently too low. The figures in column 9 are largely estimates based on the data shown and prior to 1870, and perhaps later, are much more likely to be lower, rather than higher, than the actual ones. This table was prepared over a period of years, and as additional data were found the revisions necessary were almost always upward. Clearfield County was the next producer in the state, shipments-in small amounts going down the Susquehanna River; some were made later via the West Branch Canal. Railroad facilities became available in 1862, and the growth in production increased rapidly and steadily. All available data and the estimated totals are in Table 24.
