During the continuous casting (CC) process of Ti-Stabilized Stainless Steel, the nozzle clogging or even the crusts composed of TiN, Al2O3, TixOy and the complex inclusions MgOAl2O3, Al2O3 is often occurred. The main objective of the present study is to research the reaction between refining slag or mold flux and Ti-Stabilized Stainless Steel by thermodynamic calculation. A suitable refining slag composition was sought to absorb Al2O3, Tix Oy inclusions, and the reactions between different mold flux and steel was calculated and compared. It was found that a suitable refining slag was difficult to adjust aluminum and titanium to meet requirement simultaneously. The target refined slag is composited of 3–8.7% SiO2, 56–59% CaO, 33–38% Al2O3 and 4% MgO with low melting point and high absorption capacity of inclusions for in the refining of the 321 stainless steel. SiO2, Fe2O3, Na2O and B2O3 of mold flux would react with titanium in the steel. The CaO–SiO2 based mold flux had a strong reactivity than CaO–SiO2–Al2O3 and CaO–Al2O3 based mold flux.

A certain amount of "give and take" must be adopted in the treatment of small local cavities and mounds.In all cases it is desirable that the surveys made should be tied on to the lease surveys for the purpose of location, and that all levels should be reduced to the mine datum. It is also desirable to obtain levels of the original surface before deposition of the material to be estimated. If these have not been obtained beforehand, levels and transfers round the top will be the next best. The disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has been a long-continuing problem to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. .An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal lead to the conclusion that study of the technical considerations, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem . Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude 1n certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement w s made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.

DuXing 1942, Louisiana attained the rank of fourth among the great oil-producing states of this country. Its present prominent position is the result of an orderly and systematic program of exploitation with emphasis on conservation. Even before the functioning of M-68, the Federal spacing order, development and production in Louisiana were regulated by various acts of legislation, the most recent of which and by far the most effective is Act 157 of 1940. Under the authority of this act, it has been possible for the Department of Conservation to hold many public hearings and thereby to secure data and evidence regarding the feasibility of issuing rules and regulations for development of various oil and gas fields in the state. As a result of information compiled at such public hearings, many orders have been issued by the Commissioner of Conservation that have in most cases provided reasonable solutions to the problems that arise in the exploitation and development of fields in this state. Probably one of the most effective powers granted the Commissioner of Conservation in the state of Louisiana has been the authority to provide for fieldwide unitiza-tion and pooling of condensate fields. This has led to the erection of huge cycling plants in Louisiana, which permit the most efficient recovery of the liquid content of the reservoirs, and further conserve most of the gas reserve that undoubtedly will be of considerable future value. Many months have passed since various orders of the Department of Conservation were put into effect, and all are accomplishing their purpose; namely, the elimination of waste. Although the effectiveness of these orders provides considerable satisfaction to the members of the Department of Conservation, it is also a tribute to the members of the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, who, in addition to providing carefully prepared technical data, have also given unstinting cooperation and have thereby enabled the Department to cope intelligently with the many problems. Production On Dec. 31, 1942, oil and/or gas was being produced in 50 parishes, or 78 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 12 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. This is indeed an enviable record for any state. However, it is reasonable to assume that eventually all parishes in the state of Louisiana will be productive. From a geological viewpoint, there is no apparent reason to assume otherwise—a point that a11 operators seeking oil and gas production in this state may well bear in mind. Twenty new fields were found during 1942—a rate of discovery that does not compare favorably with the 30 new fields found during 1941. The record of discoveries in Louisiana during 1942 is further disappointing when it is realized that 8 of the 20 new fields discovered were gas fields. The role of growth conditions and adhesion of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on the leaching of chalcopyrite was investigated. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans grown on sulfur, thiosulfate and ferrous ion substrates was used in this comparative study. Growth on sulfur, a solid substrate, requires bacterial adhesion unlike that required in the presence of soluble thiosulfate and ferrous ion in a mineral-salts medium. Solid substrate-grown cells showed higher rates of leaching than those grown in liquid media. An initial lag period noticed during leaching by solution-grown cells was absent when solid substrate-grown cells were used. Such a behavior is attributed to the presence of an inducible proteinaceous cell-surface appendage on the sulfur-grown cells. This appendage aids in bacterial adhesion onto the mineral surfaces. Such an appendage is absent in solution-grown cells, as substantiated by electrophoretic measurements. The importance of bacterial adhesion and the direct mechanism in leaching by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans are demonstrated.

IT has been observed by Grange and Garvey' that the homogenization of boron-treated steels could lead to complete elimination of the hardenability effect caused by boron. The experimental conditions leading to this conclusion involved the heating of steel specimens with and without boron at 2350°F for 24 hr. To prevent oxidation and decarburization, the specimens were encapsulated under vacuum in silica tubes. This observation of permanent deterioration of boron effect was noted in both a 0.63 pct plain carbon steel and a 0.25 pct C low alloy steel, both of which had been treated with ferroboron and homogenized at 2350°F for 24 hr. In another series of boron-treated steels which had been homogenized for shorter times, the effect was to reduce, but not completely eliminate, the boron effect. Under these circumstances, it was presumed that longer heating times would cause permanent deterioration of the boron effect in this series of steels also. Since the characteristic grain boundary constituent could not be formed in any of these steels after homogenization, it was concluded that possibly boron was being converted into an ineffective form through chemical combination resulting from prolonged heating at high temperatures. Assuming the validity of this observation, a series of experiments to establish the relationship between temperature of homogenization and kinetics of deterioration was contemplated. Initially an attempt was made to reproduce the results just described. For this purpose commercial lots of AISI 8640 and AISI 86B40 steels were used. The analyses of these steels appear in Table I. Hardenability evaluation was on the basis of the hardness of normalized sections. Grange and Garvey' pointed out that these steels are air hardening to some extent and such a technique can be used. For these tests the specimens were held for 20 min in a salt bath at 1600°F and then cooled in still air. Several evacuated silica capsules containing pairs of the test steels were made up and heated for 24 hr at 2350°F. A number of failures occurred among these capsules, but evaluation of the specimens successfully treated indicated a complete deterioration of the boron effect. However, examination of the surface of the treated specimens showed that some reaction, probably with the silica tube, had taken place, since none of the specimens was bright. One further test was made at 2350°F for 12 hr, using a pair of specimens wrapped in tantalum foil prior to encapsulation. These specimens appeared bright after treatment, and their hardenability evaluation showed that no deterioration had taken place. Since these steels are extremely sensitive to de-boronization at high temperatures and particularly at long times of holding, the experimental observations raised some doubt as to the real occurrence of the permanent deterioration effect. To resolve this question an experiment was undertaken in which the high temperature portion of the treatment was completed in vacuum. For this purpose a molybdenum wound resistance furnace capable of maintaining good vacuum was used. All the pertinent accessories to this furnace were machined from molybdenum stock in order to withstand the high temperature involved in the experiment. With this equipment a temperature of 2400 °F was obtained and held under a pressure of 5x10-" mm Hg for 24 hr. A specimen of each of the two test steels was suspended in the furnace and both were heated simultaneously. Temperature was measured with a standardized Pt—Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple, whose millivoltage at 2400°F was extrapolated from the standardization equation, good up to 2200°F. The complete evaluation of these specimens is shown in Table 11. The hardness values attained by each steel after normalizing, both before and after the prolonged high temperature treatment, remain the same. A microscopic study of the decomposition products present in the microstructures of specimens at various points in the heat treatment correlated with the hardness values observed. It seems that no permanent loss of boron hardenability effect occurs, at least in these Grainal-treated steels, when deboronization is circumvented. A uniform hoisting-signal code for mines hoisting from more than one level, if adopted by all mining States, would be beneficial to employees and owners alike and should largely reduce the number of hoisting accidents. Misunderstood hoisting signals cause many shaft accidents involving injuries to men, damage to equipment, and loss of production from the resultant delay. Many of the metal-mining States have adopted codes for hoisting that are effective within the borders of that State but usually entirely different from the signal code, if any, in use in an adjoining State. For many years safety engineers have recognized this lack of uniformity as a distinct hazard, but a uniform code has never been adopted by the States or by the mining industry in those States that have not incorporated signal codes in their mining laws or mining regulations.

Ammonium Nitrate Emulsions (ANE) are a large segment of the explosives market for the mining industry. These emulsions are generally designed to be very stable but when breakdown does occur, removal of the resulting thick, crystallized material can be difficult, hazardous, time consuming and costly. A heavily crystallized emulsion cannot be pumped, so manual removal often becomes necessary. Buildup of semi-solid layers of crystallized emulsion can occur in bulk storage tanks or in truck compartments. In these situations, a manual cleanup involving hazardous confined-space entry and a significant amount of downtime is usually required. Once the crystallized emulsion is removed from the equipment, there is very expensive disposal of the resultant waste via a licensed trade-waste company. A much more desirable solution for dealing with waste emulsion is to completely break the emulsion, allowing the oxidizer and fuel phases to separate into two distinct layers. These layers would then be readily pumpable and could be disposed of much more economically. It may even be possible that the separated oxidizer phase could be repurposed as fertilizer and the fuel phase could be used to manufacture granular ANFO explosives. There are some existing products on the market for breaking emulsion explosives, but these generally need a high degree of mixing into the emulsion to achieve adequate breakdown. The aim of this study was to identify surfactants systems (demulsifiers) capable of effectively breaking a range of waste emulsions with minimized agitation. This paper describes the development and performance testing of novel demulsifier products. The test work involved a comprehensive series of laboratory screening tests, where the demulsifier formulations were optimized. A highly efficient formulation was identified, and field trials were conducted on real world, full-scale waste emulsions. Results will be presented that demonstrate a viable solution for the disposal, and potential re-use, of waste ANE in the explosives industry.

"In 2017, Nutrien Allan Potash remediated a portion of the concrete liner in the production shaft. A set of underslung work platforms and collection boxes were used in conjunction with hydraulic splitters, jackleg drills and hand chippers to excavate and remove the broken concrete. New concrete was placed with the original pressure relief design, using a shaft slip form. Shortly after excavating, it was found that the estimated breaking rate and amount of original concrete in-situ was under estimated. Fifteen feet of excavated concrete (2719cu.ft) and ten feet (of replaced concrete was completed on April 28, 2017, and operation of the production shaft was returned to mine operations. During February 2019, Nutrien Allan Potash began remediation of a portion of the concrete liner in the service shaft. The project is different than the 2017 project, as the remediation has occurred during normal running operations and occurred only on night shift. Rather than hydraulic splitters and hand chippers, the new method includes a concrete saw and mechanical excavator from a working platform. The selected method is based on the lessons learned from the 2017 project in the production shaft. The service shaft project was scheduled to be completed in July, 2019. INTRODUCTION Nutrien Allan Potash is located approximated 75 km east of the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. There are currently two shafts at Nutrien Allan Potash: the Production Shaft and the Service Shaft, transporting people and material from surface to a depth of 3,335 ft. The Production Shaft was completed in 1967, with one section of grey cast iron tubbing installed in the Blairmore formation between the 1605 and 2037 ft Levels. A second set of cast iron tubbing was installed in the Duperow formation between 2203 and 2463 ft Levels in 1999. The remainder of the concrete as of todays standards is designed as a pressure relief liner. The Service Shaft was completed in 1968, with one section of grey cast iron tubbing installed in the Blairmore formation between the 1600 and 2048 ft Levels. A second set of cast iron tubbing was installed in 1981, with 169 ft installed through the Duperow formation. The remainder of the concrete as of todays standards is designed as a pressure relief liner. PRODUCTION SHAFT REMEDIATION During the second quarter of 2015, the Mine Engineering team were notified of an area of concern in the production shaft. The shaft specialists of Golder Associates Ltd (Golder, formerly Alan Auld Canada) were contacted to complete an inspection of the production shaft liner with emphasis on the area of concern. Based on the inspection and documentation review, it was determined that the concrete at the 2804 foot elevation had been broken out for some time and was retained with #8 rebar bolts with resin encapsulation. The broken concrete was encroaching on the clearance to the conveyance."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an alternative electrochemical process for the production of calcium metal. The current industrial practice is costly, complex, and inefficient. The Bureau method involved electrowinning of a calcium-tin alloy followed by electrorefining to produce calcium metal. In the electrowinning cell, CaCI2 was fed to a KCI2-CaCI2 electrolyte. The calcium was electrowon at 6500 C into the pure molten tin cathode until the cathode contained 7.5 wt pct Ca. Current efficiency for electrowinning averaged over 90 pct. The resulting calcium-tin alloy served as the anode for the electrorefming cell, which employed a [CaC~-CaF2] fused salt as the electrolyte. Calcium metal was electrorefmed at 8500 C with a current efficiency of 85 pct based on calcium metal recovered. The calcium metal analyzed 99.2 pct, which is purer than commercially produced calcium.

Problems in new strip mine development is a subject that could require several days to cover adequately. Coupled with the fertile imagination of television writers, we could probably expand it into a series rivaling Gunsmoke in longevity with just as many shootouts at sundown. It would-of course-be subject to a high Neilson Rating. To bring the subject into perspective, we will limit the comments to a general discussion covering western strip coal developments. Stimulated by increased demand for low sulfur coal, surface mineable western coal operations began a shift into high gear approximately four years ago. Then came last year's "energy crisis" that increased the pressure on coal development not only in the west, but nationwide. Several eastern power plants having dual oil and coal burning facilities were directed to discontinue using oil. Also, a number of new south and southwestern power plants scheduled to burn natural gas or of I commenced an ordered conversion to other fuels, namely, coal. The involved utilities with reserve positions accelerated their planning while others began the search for long-term commitments from coal producing companies. In addition, announcements were made for proposed mine mouth coal gasification projects in New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Dakota.

In this study, the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC) was investigated for fluorite beneficiation. The structure and principle of the specially designed column are described. Fluorite samples from the tungsten separation tailings of the Shizhuyuan Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, P.R. China, were tested using a small-scale continuous flotation test unit, and concentrates with a fluorite grade higher than 98% were obtained. One rougher and three cleaner stages in the FCSMC achieved the same separation performance as one rougher and eight cleaners in conventional flotation cells. This greatly simplified the flotation circuit and reduced operating costs.

Europe’s second-largest seaport has installed a new combi wall consisting of pipe piles, sheet piles and inclined shaft grouted piles to support it. The new Liebherr piling rig with swinging leader was used to drive shaft grouted piles into a very dense soil layer of sand with glauconite. The 60 m Liebherr swinging leader was suspended at an inclination of 45° via a suspension frame and suspension ropes from the crawler crane. This inclined installation of shaft grouted piles via freely hanging swinging leader, as used for this project, is unique in Belgium. Moreover, the pile length of 43 m is a novelty for this type of pile. Shaft grouted piles consist of a steel profile with a separate box-like pile shoe with an open top. A thin grout is injected via an injection pipe during driving and emerges just above the pile shoe. As the pile is driven further down, so compressing the ground, the space above the pile foot is immediately filled with grout under pressure. This piling system is ideally suited for the transfer of high tensile loadings. It is a method to increase geotechnical load-bearing capacity and to reduce negative skin friction during pile driving.

From a scientific point of view , the zircon is by far the most remarkable of the gem stones , and a satisfactory solution of the problems offered by its characters and constitution has not yet been made . 3 Three distinct forms have been recognized , differing in specific gravity , hardness , optical properties , behavior when heated , and color.4 ( See section of this paper entitled "Description and Properties . " ) Zircon as a gem stone has not been as well known as its properties warrant . It is one of the most brilliant of the precious stones (having a high refractive index) . The colorless zircon rivals the diamond in brilliance and fire play to such an extent that a judgment based entirely upon optical inspection might be erroneous . In the opinion of gem authorities , the colored stones likewise have much merit . The blue zircon ( " Starlite" ) was so named by Kunz because of its resemblance to a " star twinkling in the night . " Another gem authority describes the leaf- green stone as one possessing a restful beauty , the red stone as having a certain ( though somber) grandeur , and the golden-yellow stone as being unsurpassed in magnificence . The slowness with which the zircon , a stone frequently mentioned in ancient literature , has come into use in modern jewelery may be owing to the fact that authorities differ as to whether the colorless and the blue zircons are found as such in nature or are treated stones . Any treated stone , although the material of which it is composed may be essentially genuine , has been considered a deception . However , according to Kunz , " Starlite is now sold over the entire world ; never has anything been so well introduced. "7 Dr. Foshag, mineral curator of the United States National Museum, states that the first allotment of zircons to enter the United States was obtained in 1921 from Siam ( through France ) for scientific or museum purposes and that four or five years later the stones were adopted by the jewelers of this country . Retail jewelers are displaying the colorless type and the blue stones , especially , in finger rings , necklaces , and like ornaments . Fine crystals have been used somewhat extensively in jewelling watches and as supports for the edges of fine balances . At one time zircons were though to be appropriate in mourning jewelery .

This paper describes measurements of current and voltage done on submerged arc furnaces. The aim is to focus on and attempt to separate from one another the electric arc current and the current bypassing the arc through the charge. Toward this goal two measurement campaigns on AC-arcs burning on coke beds are ac-counted for. The first was done on a 150 kVA pilot furnace at SINTEF in Trondheim Norway, and the second one was done on a 48 MVA industrial furnace run by Icelandic Alloys in Iceland. The measurements were compared to simulations employing an advanced MFD arc model. The main results are that a coke bed does not necessarily behave as a linear conductor. However the warmer chemically transformed part of an operating Si-metal or FeSi furnace probably exhibits linear behaviour and passes a considerable fraction of the phase current, perhaps on some operating conditions, as much as 50%.

With decreasing ore grades, the tailings of mining operations are becoming of increasing interest as metal-containing secondary raw materials. The objective of the current work was to investigate chloride leaching of gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc present in the flotation tailings. In the current study, the effect of cupric ion as an oxidant (0–50 g/L) and NaCl (150–250 g/L) on metals extraction was investigated. The other parameters, such as pH (1.8), temperature (95 °C), solid/liquid ratio (25%), oxygen feed rate (1200 mL/min), leaching time (24 h), and stirring rate (950 rpm), were kept constant. Gold dissolution rate was shown to increase with increase in cupric ion concentrations up to 50 g/L. Also, increase in NaCl concentration up to 250 g/L increased gold extraction. Majority of the copper present in the flotation tailings could be dissolved with all the all solutions investigated. The other base metals, cobalt, nickel, and zinc extractions were also shown to increase with increase in the cupric ion and sodium chloride concentration. However, even in the absence of cupric ion addition (t = 72 h, 250 g/L NaCl), the final extraction of Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, and Fe increased up to 98, 93, 83, 76, and 80%, respectively. This shows the power of inherently originating oxidants present in the tailings. Furthermore, the solid analysis of the leach residue indicated that leaching the flotation tailings in pure NaCl may result in partial gold dissolution. The results demonstrate that significant amount of metals present in the tailings could be extracted even with only NaCl as added chemical in the presence of oxygen feed, oxidizing agents originating directly from the raw material. This can provide an advantageous cyanide-free method for extraction of metals from very low-grade tailings with low chemical consumption.

Relatively lower recoveries (60%) of coarse phosphate (-16 +35 mesh) particles are attributed to the difficulty in transportation of coarse particles from the pulp to the froth column and rapid drainage of these particles from the froth column to the pulp. Increasing the hydrophobicity of coarse particles by higher, more efficient coating of the collector and using larger froth volumes have been suggested to overcome these problems. In this study, the role of emulsification of the fatty acid-fuel oil collector on the flotation recovery of coarse particles was examined. It was determined that emulsification can not only increase the coarse particle recovery, but do so at higher fractions of fuel oil in the collector, thereby reducing the reagent cost as well.
