Whether the mining engineer is concerned with stress problems in a mine at depth, the development of a new drill bit, or the efficiency of a comminution process, the mechanical properties of the rock with which he must work are of the utmost importance. One of the most popular topics in rock mechanics circles today is ?Is it possible to utilize directly parameters determined from laboratory tests on rock specimens in the analysis of mining engineering problems?? It is the author's opinion that laboratory and .field investigations have not yet reached the stage of development where this question can be answered with any degree of certainty. At present, great difficulties are involved in applying the results of laboratory tests to a mining engineering problem. However, this is due in part to the lack of detailed measurements of stress and deformation in the field and in part to the lack of development of satisfactory structural theories to correlate laboratory and field measurements. Furthermore, if mechanical properties measured in the laboratory are to be directly applied to the analysis of mining engineering problems, the critical mechanical properties must be identified, reliable test procedures must be developed and extensive test programs must be carried out.

Xstrata Copper at Mount Isa in Australia has operated one copper Isasmelt furnace and four P-S converters. The phenomena of foaming occur in above 10% of converter operations. A thermodynamic model of copper P-S converter and a viscosity model of converter slag have been developed to simulate the slag blow and copper blow. The model predicts the chemistry and viscosity of copper skims during copper blow. The effects of oxygen potential, charge of dirty materials, slag carry-over, under-blowing, over-blowing, and temperature on the foaming and viscosity of copper skims have been discussed. Some improvements of the industrial operations have been presented.

Pea Ridge Iron Ore Co., previously Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property, now wholly owned by St. Joe, is located near Sullivan, MO, about 112 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drill¬ing in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was minable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Pro¬duction commenced in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 396 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 792 m (2600 ft) long, and up to 182 m (600 ft) thick. It dips about 1.39 rad (80°) and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 45-m (150-ft) intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the ore body on 58-m (190-ft) centers. Banks of stopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modi¬fied shrinkage stoping method (Fig. 1). This was done by undercutting a 12 m (40 ft) wide by 45-m (150-ft) long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 1.5-m (5-ft) intervals. A 20-m (65-ft) sill was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fin¬gers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a "lattice" of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar re¬covery program was necessary (Fig. 2). INITIAL PILLAR RECOVERY PROGRAM The program was started in the upper western por¬tion of the ore body, furthest from the shafts. Due to the fact that the ore body narrows in the western extremity, the stope orientation was changed to mini¬mize required development. This left pillars 18 to 24 m (60 to 80 ft) wide and up to 79 m (260 ft) in length. The area selected for the start of the program had been developed between the uppermost level at 419 m (1375 ft) below surface and the 510-m (1675-ft) level. Due to the 91-m (300-ft) difference in depth, sublevels were driven on 15-m (50-ft) intervals and the ore was taken by rather classical sublevel stoping methods (Fig. 3). This left a structure with accesses compatible with drilling with 114-mm (41/2-in.) bore drifters mounted on columns. Most holes were drilled 63.5 mm (21h in.) diam and reamed to 100 or 127 mm (4 or 5 in.). Practical depth capability was about 21 m (70 ft) for holes above horizontal and 13 to 15 m (45 to 50 ft) for holes below horizontal. The interdependence of these long pillars necessitated that several of them be blasted simultaneously, making large blasts the only practical approach. Due to the required length of such loading cam¬paigns, it was necessary to select an explosive which could stand in the hole in an underground mine for a 4 to 6 week period. After some consideration a pump¬ able water gel was selected for both uphole and down¬hole loading. This afforded a high velocity, high density explosive which could be handled in large quantities. Loading the downholes was a fairly straightforward process. The holes were lined with an 8 mil polybutylene plastic sleeve and water gel was pumped into them with a double diaphragm pump mounted on the bottom of a stainless steel tub with a 81-kg (180-1b) capacity. This information circular. deais primarily with an engineering descrip- tion of a type of longwall cutting and loading machine developed by Eick- hoff Maschinenfabrik, Bochum, Germany..: This machine is supposed to have been developed and tested during the latter part of 1941 and early 1942. The only source of information is con- tained in certain literature and engineering data, with drawings which were acquired by the Allied Military Authorities when Germany was occupied; and the information will have to be limited because the writer has not seen the machine in the factory or in operation. However, the information may be of interest to the coal-mining industry in this country, and for this reason our Government has decided to publish the data procured so far. The Eickhoff cutting and loading machine is particularly suitable for the longwall mining system. It can only be used under that type of mining system and is not suitable for the more common type known in this country as room-and-pillar work. The material for the description of the machine and its operation was compiled and translated from German drawings and operating instructions. These detailed drawings and instructions are on file with the Bureau of Mines and are available for inspection by any responsible person interested in the details of the construction of the machine.

"As the US coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity.Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 68% of the nations underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-mid-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.IntroductionThe ultimate goal for any coal mining company is to effectively use its human and financial resources to maximize its profits through the extraction of its reserves. Although recent workforce reductions in the industry have resulted in a more efficient use of labor and increased productivity, there comes a point in time when further reductions in the numbers of workers in each operating section are impossible with existing equipment. For example, Farinelli and Bise (1987) found that labor cost constituted 62% - 73% of the cost per ton of coal at the mining section, with a minimum crew size. Thereafter, efforts to increase productivity must focus on more efficient mine plans and technology.The fact that an increase in productivity can be realized by reducing non-productive time (change-out and tram time) and converting it to productive time has been known and demonstrated for quite some time. What has not been demonstrated frequently is the quantification of the potential productivity increase of currently emerging technology or ""add-on"" equipment. It is one thing to be able to say that a piece of equipment will make an operation more productive, but it is another thing to be able to quantify the productivity increase that will justify the purchase of the new equipment. Not only is a financial benefit possible in room-and-pillar mining with an increase in productivity, but a decrease in the time necessary to develop a longwall panel can also occur.The purpose of this paper is an analyze the impacts of a changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to several scenarios incorporating emerging technology. To do this, four cases will be developed. A base case, consisting of the typical manner in which continuous-miner sections are currently operating, is compared to three layouts incorporating: (1) flooded-bed scrubbers on radio remote-controlled continuous miners, (2)a continuous miner with side-mounted roofbolters, and (3) a continuous miner with side-mounted roofbolters used in conjunction with a continuous-haulage system."

Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

IntroductionAutogenous or semi-autogenous mills in conjunction with rod or ball mills are used with preference for ore processing. Most ball mills are of closed-circuit design and operate with mechanical classifiers (spiral or rake classifiers) or hydrocyclones. In other words, the ores undergo wet primary grinding, since slurries are required for the downstream separation stages anyway. This paper presents a new grinding system based on high pressure comminution of ores. This grinding process allows:- Energy savings of up to 20 % or more- Capacity increases of up to 100 % and more- Reduction of wear costs- Smaller units for new installation and thus- Reduced investment costsThese advantages are highly interesting for both new installations and conversion projects, particulary in cases where an increasing hardeness of the ore, i.e. rising Bond Work Index, reduces the output of the plants or where the metal assay of the ore decreases and the capacity of the existing systems has to be increased. POLYCOM high-pressure grinding rolls have established themselves with great success already for grinding cement clinker, granulated blast furnace slag, limestone, cement raw materials, coal and other materials.Meanwhile more than 250 high pressure grinding rolls have been installed worldwide. The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins sustained mining for over a century. They include the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of more than 3,660-m (12,000-ft) and vertical continuity in excess of 1,370-m (4,500-ft) with mining widths from 1.5- to 15-m (5- to 50-ft). These characteristics are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district. It eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970s. Openpit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines.

High stress in rock masses can cause significant instability problems such as squeezing deformation in soft rock and rock bursts in hard rock. The support system applied in burst-prone areas in high-stress conditions is required to be able to carry high load and accommodate large deformation of the rock mass without experiencing any serious damage. Yielding support systems are promising to provide support for both squeezing and burst-prone rock mass encountered in mining or tunnelling at depth. They are ideally strong and stiff initially and then ductile after yielding (Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou, 2020). With respect to support design, a ground support system has to create a safe working environment under both static and dynamic loading conditions by providing the functions of reinforcing, retaining, holding and connecting elements (Cai and Kasier, 2018). Rigid rock bolts and cable bolts perform reinforcing and holding functions of a ground support system. In highly fractured ground or with large excavation spans (eg at roadway intersections or in caverns), unstable ground depth can exceed the length of typical rigid rock bolts (ie greater than ~3.0 m). In such cases, flexible cable bolts are needed to tie the reinforced and retained rock mass back to deeper and more stable rock. The flexibility of cable bolts allows anchor lengths greater than the tunnel opening that would otherwise restrict rigid bolts. Cable bolts also offer higher strength to weight ratio, with tensile strengths 2–3 times that of standard rebar bolts. This high strength comes at the cost of lower strain tolerance, typically around 5–7 per cent at break. Despite the lower strain tolerance, cable bolts are often used as dynamic support in demanding burst-prone ground conditions. The lower strain tolerance is compensated by allowing sufficient free length for stretching or incorporating a yielding device. There are a number of dynamic cable bolts available on the market and a number of testing campaigns have been undertaken to quantify the dynamic performance of these cable bolts. This paper reviews the existing range of dynamic cable bolts and discusses the potential areas for improvement and further research.

A commercial titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo has been gas nitrided in this work, in pure nitrogen atmosphere in order to improve its surface properties. The nitriding was performed at two different temperatures, 950 and 1050°C, and for different periods of time. The influence of the initial surface roughness on the diffusion process and on the surface properties of this material was studied. The influence of the processing parameters of gas nitriding on the surface roughness, phase modifications and the microstructure of the nitrided layers has been analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Microhardness profiles were obtained on cross-sections of the samples after gas nitriding applying a Knoop indenter.

The Finnish Defence Forces Technical Research Centre (PVTT) studied the effect of shape of boost-er to its ability to ignite insensitive (IM) plastic bonded explosive (PBX). Therefore an explosive fac-tory produced 20 insensitive (IM) plastic bonded explosive (PBX) charges for the tests. The mass of each of the charges was exactly 9.2 kg (20.3 lb). The charges were equipped by two different type of boosters; RDX and PETN. Both the explosives contained some parts of plasticizers. The weight of all the boosters was exactly 300 g (0.66lb). On the bases of their shape, the boosters were also divid-ed into two different groups, cylindrical and “pancake”. In the middle of the “pancakes” there was also shaped a small cone in such away that the detonation could accelerate to its full speed after the charge was ignited. DURING the closing days of the last Congress a resolution was passed, creating the Senate Com-mission of Gold and Silver Inquiry. The resolu-tion charges the Commission with the responsibility to investigate and report to the Congress on Jan. 1, 1924, upon the following subjects: 1. The causes of the continuing decrease in the production of gold and silver. 2. The causes of the depressed condition of the gold and silver industry in the United States. 3. The production, reduction, refining, transportation, mar-keting, sale, and uses of gold and silver in the United States and elsewhere. 4. The effect of the decreased production of gold and silver upon commerce, industry, exchange, and prices. The personnel of the Commission is as follows: Senators Pittman, Sterling, Goodling, Walsh and Oddie. At a meeting on May 8, H. N. Lawrie, a mining engi-neer and economist, was appointed as Assistant to the Commission. The present situation with respect to the gold and silver mining industries is well illustrated by the follow-ing data: The total world production of gold (in dollars) for 1915 was $468,724,918, and for 1921, $329,915,101; as shown by the reports of the U. S. Mint; and for the year 1922, $306,793,000, which is based oh a prelimi-nary estimate; this indicates a decrease of 34.5 per cent. between 1915 and 1922. The total world production of silver (in fine ounces) for 1915 was 178,850,000 oz.; for 1921, 175,268,234 oz., a decrease of 2 per cent.

The use of hydraulically placed backfill in the deep gold mines of South Africa has increased rapidly over the past decade. The backfill that is delivered to the placement areas has a relatively high moisture content, and it is therefore pumped into geotextile containment bags that allow excess water to drain out but retain solid particles. The specific problems associated with this process that are addressed in this paper include the loss of solid particles entrained in the excess water, the rate of strength gain of the backfill, and the post-placement shrinkage of the backfill. The results of laboratory, surface stope, and underground tests are described. The parameters that were varied included the slurry density, the particle-size distribution, and the feed rate of the slurry the concentration of added flocculant; and the type of geotextile used as containment. Suggestions are given for the optimization of the placement properties of backfill.

"Ground freezing was successfully used to create an impermeable barrier wall along 3,000 feet of the downtown Seattle waterfront as part of the Seattle Seawall Replacement Project. This $360 million re-development involved removing the original 1930-era seawall and replacing it with a new, seismically resistant concrete wall supported on fill soil improved by jet-grout. The replacement wall was one of the largest construction projects in the state of Washington at the time. Ground freezing is typically used as both a structural shoring wall and groundwater cutoff. However, at this project it was used primarily as a cutoff wall to stop groundwater seepage into the 16-foot deep excavation from the landside areas.The project was divided into ten boxes (sections), each typically 200 to 600 feet in length. Only a few boxes were under construction at one time to reduce the impact on tourist-dependent local businesses. Soil conditions in the freeze zone consisted of sand, gravel and silt fill with abundant wood and debris. Tidally influenced groundwater, much of it contaminated, was difficult and expensive to control using wells during initial stages of construction. For all subsequent stages, a frozen soil wall extending to about 35 feet in depth was used to stop groundwater seepage into the excavation. An additional benefit of ground freezing included elimination of potential settlement beneath nearby buildings, utilities, and the Alaskan Way Viaduct that would likely have occurred with the use of conventional dewatering wells. The frozen soil wall crossed more than 130 buried utility locations (including water, sewer, storm, electrical, fiber optic, phone, gas, steam) with no damage. The frozen soil wall was very successful and limited groundwater influx from the landside to the seawall excavation to a negligible amount so that pumping, storage and treatment of contaminated groundwater was essentially eliminated."

While a sizable amount of data exist as to the activity and distribution of minor elements between matte and metal, there has been no unifying theory presented delineating the form of dissolution of these elements in molten sulfides. In order to alleviate that deficiency the literature concerning the behavior of As, Sb, Bi and Pb in mattes is reviewed. Models present in the literature, regarding the thermochemical behavior of minor elements, are tested, and new models are presented and evaluated using thermodynamic theory. The results of those analyses are used to predict optimum conditions for the volatilization of minor elements. The dearth of data on the behavior of minor elements in nickel mattes requires that this review focus on copper- iron mattes. An effort is made, however, to utilize basic knowledge regarding nickel sulfides and the interaction of nickel with the minor elements to predict the behavior of those elements in nickel-copper and nickel-iron mattes.

INTRODUCTION Dry concentration or pneumatic cleaning uses air currents as the separating medium. Pneumatic cleaning in the United States today is limited to three or four operations. In fact, the quantity of bituminous coal cleaned pneumatically has declined from its peak in 1965 of about 25.4 million tons (23.1 Mt) to its current level (1988) of less than 4 million tons (3.64 Mt) annually, as shown in Fig. 7-9 1. In 1940, pneumatic methods accounted for 15% of the bituminous coal and lignite cleaned in the United States as given in Table 7-32. Currently, pneumatic methods account for less than 2%. The largest air plant was built in Pennsylvania about 1968 with 14 units processing 1400 tph (1280 t/h) of 3/, in. X 0 (19 mm X 0) raw feed and two additional units retreating middlings. This same plant is one of only three or four plants still operating air-cleaning devices in the US. A wet plant was added in 1985 to increase the efficiency of cleaning the fines. The air plant is still used as a scalping operation for the coarse material. Five additional operations are either no longer in production or have discontinued the use of air tables within the last year. Wet cleaning methods are now being employed at the facilities that have discontinued air table operation. he advantage of dry cleaning techniques is the low moisture content of the clean coal product. However, to decrease respirable dust, mining operations must use water sprays on modem mining equipment. This water adds to the moisture content of the run-of-mine coal and decreases the effectiveness of dry cleaning processes that rely on low surface moistures in the feed to allow for good separations. Wet cleaning methods are preferred, especially since they also allow for much sharper separations. The advantage of dry cleaning techniques is the low moisture content of the clean coal product. However, to decrease respirable dust, mining operations must use water sprays on modem mining equipment. This water adds to the moisture content of the run-of-mine coal and decreases the effectiveness of dry cleaning processes that rely on low surface moistures in the feed to allow for good separations. Wet cleaning methods are preferred, especially since they also allow for much sharper separations. Despite dry concentration's drawbacks, research has continued into dry concentrating methods, including both electrostatic and magnetic separation techniques. The real application for future dry cleaning processes is probably at the power plant between the pulverizer and the boiler feed where particles are already dry and ground to fine sizes (- 200 mesh [ -0.075 mm]), increasing the effectiveness of the separation and also, possibly, increasing the liberation of clean coal from finely disseminated impurities. From a utility's viewpoint, pneumatic cleaning offers the best delivered Btu cost, based on the premise that a percent of moisture is just as detrimental as a percent of ash. The precipitation of hematite from ferric sulphate - cupric sulphate - lithium chloride acidic solutions was studied in a batch reactor. The effect of several variables on the extent of hematite precipitation as well as on its crystallinity and purity was investigated. The variables studied include: initial ferric concentration (1.5 - 30 g/L), retention time (0 - 12 h), initial sulphuric acid concentration (0 - 30 g/L), temperature (150 - 220 °C) and chloride concentration (0 - 25 g/L). The results show that hematite is preferentially precipitated at lower initial iron concentrations. Longer retention times increased the fraction of hematite in the precipitates but did not affect its crystallinity to a significant extent. On the other hand, higher temperatures increased the purity and crystallinity of the hematite. At lower acid concentrations hematite and goethite were precipitated. However, only hematite was precipitated when the initial acid concentration was > 12.5 g/L. Better crystalline hematite was formed at lower acidities. Increasing chloride concentration increased the amount of hematite and decreased the amount of iron sulphate hydroxide phases, but did not affect the crystallinity of the hematite.

The normal spectral emissivities of liquid Ti, V, Zr, Mo, and Pt were determined at the fusion temperatures in an electron-beam furnace using a water-cooled copper hearth. The normal spectral emissivities were estimated above the melting points by using adjusted two-color temperatures as approximations of the true temperatures for substitution in Wien's equation. Simultaneous brightness temperatures were determined with a micro-optical pyrometer. The true temperature ranges covered were 1,668° to 1,885° C for Ti; 1,919° to 2,013° C for V; 1,855° to 2,367° C for Zr; 2,610° to 2,751° C for Mo, and 1,772° to 1,990° C for Pt. The spectral emissivities for titanium and zirconium decreased with increasing temperature. At an effective wavelength (?) of 658 mµ the emissivity of titanium ranged from 0.51 to 0.45 and zirconium, from 0.47 to 0.41. The emissivities of vanadium (? = 658 mµ) and molybdenum (? = 657 mµ) were constant at 0.41±0.02 and 0.33±0.01, respectively. The spectral emissivity of platinum (? = 658 mµ) was constant at 0.39±0.02 up to 1,900° C; above that temperature anomalous data were obtained. A mass spectrometric study indicated that platinum was reacting with back-streaming silicon vapors from the diffusion pump when the ambient pressure was greater than 2 X 10-5 torr.
