"Predictive maintenance (also known as PHM or equipment ‘health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future equipment failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:reduction of equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetimeautomatic determination of the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis avoidance of costs of unnecessary maintenance and unexpected failures improved safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data preprocessing is performed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques. In the case that data isn’t available for the full range of operating modes, operating scenarios can be simulated. Machine learning techniques are then used to estimate equipment health. Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be operationalised in an IT environment such as a server or cloud. Alternatively, algorithms may be implemented in an embedded system directly on the equipment, allowing for faster response times and significantly reducing the amount of data sent over the network.In this paper, we use both historical and simulated data of the plant under various modes of operation including run to failure, and we then leverage machine learning techniques in MATLAB to estimate degradation and remaining useful life. This technique, of combining both simulation models and machine learning, in the areas of predictive maintenance and equipment health monitoring has been adopted by Safran, makers of aircraft jet engines, since 2007. Bench-scale research at the Bureau of Mines has resulted in the successful development of a combination electrorefining-electrowinning method for recycling all the lead in scrap batteries. The method reduces energy consumption and eliminates toxic emissions, in contrast to present pyrometallurgical smelting, and the lead produced is pure enough for use in maintenance-free batteries. Anodes cast from molten lead scrap were electrorefined in 1-and 2-liter plastic cells using an electrolyte composition of 70 g/l Pb and 90 g/l free H2SiF6 (fluosilicic acid). Both reagent-grade and waste H2SiF6 were used. Cathode starting sheets were made from refined lead. Aloes, and later bone gelatin, and calcium lignin sulfonate addition agents were employed. The sludge remaining after separation of the lead metal was treated in a two-step leaching operation to solubilize the lead for recovery by electrowinning. Conditions for electrowinning were essentially the same as for electro-refining, except that insoluble Pb02-Ti (lead dioxide-coated titanium) anodes were used. The best results for both electrorefining and electrowinning were obtained with a current density of 170 amp/m2 and a cell temperature of 25° to 35° C. Cathode purity ranged from about 99.9 to 99.99+ pct Pb. Maximum energy consumption after 3 days, for electrorefining and electrowinning, was 90 and 700 kwhr per metric ton of refined lead, respectively.

The selection of a process for treating a gold ore is governed primarily by the characteristics of the ore under consideration. The form in which the gold occurs, its mode of association with other minerals, and the size and surface condition of the gold particles are important factors which influence materially the choice of procedure for recovering gold. A knowledge of these characteristics may be obtained by microscopic and chemical methods combined with experimental testing. Cyanidation and amalgamation, either alone or in conjunction with flotation and gravity methods, are peculiarly adapted to the treatment of gold ores, especially those of relatively low grade. Gold alloys readily with mercury provided both present clean surfaces. The presence of oils and grease, antimony and arsenic minerals, or soluble sulphides have a harmful effect. Very small, flaky particles of gold frequently are lost in amalgamation because of noncontact with the mercury. Fine gold in pyrite, or gold having rusty or contaminated surfaces, is often lost for the same reason. Grinding or some form of abrasion sometimes removes surface films of iron oxide or substances of a similar nature, and alkalies or other chemicals are used to remove grease. Gold is readily soluble in cyanide solution, and this method of treatment is particularly effective in the recovery of gold from the tailings resulting from other types of concen¬tration procedure. Cyanide solutions must contact the gold to insure recovery, and the porosity of the ore treated and the fineness of grinding required are important governing factors. The use of lime in cyanidation is necessary to protect the cyanide, to precipitate undesirable substances, and to settle slimes. Certain substances in ores are harmful in cyanidation; chief among them are those that combine with cyanide, forming cyanides, and carbon which precipitates gold from solution. Arsenic and antimony are also harmful if present in sufficient quantity. These and other difficulties encountered in cyaniding certain ores often are overcome by roasting prior to leaching. Zinc dust is used almost universally for precipitating precious metals from cyanide solutions. The refining and melting of the product may be accomplished by oxidizing the zinc before melting it in graphite pots with fluxes, although sulphuric acid is now used largely to remove the zinc before melting. Straight cyanidaticn practice is being replaced by flotation as a major process, followed by cyanide leaching of the tailings, but amalgamation is still needed as a primary process for the recovery of coarse gold before either flotation or cyanidation.

"There are a number of nitrate-containing wastewater sources, as concentrated as 30 wt % NO3 and as large as 2000 m3/day, in the nuclear fuel cycle. The biological reduction of nitrate in waste water to gaseous nitrogen, accompanied by the oxidation of a nutrient carbon source to gaseous carbon dioxide, is an ecologically sound and cost-effective method of nitrate waste disposal. These nitrate-containing wastewater sources can be successfully biologically denitrified to meet discharge standards in the range of 10 to 20 g N(NO3-)/m3 by the use of a fluidized bed bioreactor. The denitrification bacteria are a mixed culture derived from garden soil; the major strain is Pseudomonas. In the fluidized-bed bioreactor, the bacteria are allowed to attach to 0.25- to 0.50-mm-diam. coal fluidization particles, which are then fluidized by the upward flow of influent wastewater. Maintaining the bacteria-to-coal weight ratio at approximately 1:10 results in a bioreactor bacteria loading of greater than 20,000 g/m3,This paper describes the results of a bio denitrification R&D program based on the use of fluidized bioreactors capable of operating at nitrate levels of up to 7000 g/m3 and achieving denitrification rates as high as 80 g N(N03-) per day per litre of empty bioreactor volume. "The surface of many concentrate thickeners has traditionally looked like that of a flotation cell. Over the last three years Normandy Golden Grove Concentrator, in partnership with Outokumpu Technology have developed and implemented an innovative breakthrough deaeration technology to address this problem.When installed in the thickener feedline, the system successfully detached air bubbles adhering to the solid particles and removed air bubbles from the feed stream, subsequently presenting a fully deaerated feed to the thickener feedwell.Tests to date have shown an 80% reduction in overflow solids. As a result, costs associated with concentrate loss and measures to recover concentrate that settles in process tanks and ponds have been minimized.MOTIVATIONIt is recognised in mineral processing operations that the entrainment of finely divided air in thickener feeds can cause significant problems in the operation of a thickener. This is particularly the case with thickening of flotation concentrates, in which air bubbles are strongly attached to the mineral particles and are difficult to remove. Such particles attached to fine air bubbles rise to the thickener surface, and hence over the weir and into the thickener overflow. High solids carryover can lead to a direct loss of mineral product, and if the product settles in process water tanks and ponds, the recovery of this product by means of intermittent dredging operations is usually expensive and inconvenient.Many concentrate thickeners are fitted with devices which attempt to alleviate this problem. Froth rings or baffles, skimmers and froth sprays, all play a part in reducing the amount of solids carried over into the overflow. However, many froths are very stable and persist despite these measures. In the worst cases, a thick froth layer forms which builds up to a depth greater than the froth ring, and hence may overflow or pass beneath the ring . Any concentrate that finds its way past the froth ring can also cause blockage of the overflow weir and launder, and has the potential to upset clarification performance by cutting off sections of the overflow handling system. The formation of a froth layer on the thickener also makes it more difficult for the operator to monitor the clarification performance."

The 2-mile Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel was constructed in 1954 to then-current mining and construction standards. Due to its lifespan and deteriorating condition it is now being stabilized and rehabilitated using conventional excavation and ground support. At its southern end, below the prestigious Three Arch Bay community, the original tunnel alignment passes under a historic landslide where the tunnel was sand-backfilled and capped by bulkheads in 1957 due to severe and caving ground conditions. Video footage of the existing 21- inch clay pipe showed that the pipe is severely damaged, which could potentially cause a catastrophic pipeline failure and sewage spill into the Pacific Ocean. This paper summarizes the thorough investigation and design process, tunnel realignment construction and monitoring, and the notable cooperation between all parties to overcome the project risks.

Este trabalho trata da deposição de um nanofilme de sílica através do processo sol-gel na superfície de um substrato vítreo para sua aplicação em usinas térmicas de energia solar. Os filmes foram confeccionados pelo processo de revestimento por imersão utilizando-se um equipamento dip-coating e passaram por um tratamento térmico à 425°C durante 30 minutos. Na etapa de caracterização foram feitos ensaios de espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios-X, refletância difusa no UV-Vis, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e medidas de molhabilidade. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por teste de adesão da fita e dureza a lápis. Resultados dos ensaios de espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios-X confirmaram haver a deposição de sílica sobre o substrato. Foi obtida uma refletância difusa de 2,72% para o filme antirreflexivo. Imagens no MEV revelaram uma superfície lisa, uniforme e isenta de trincas. Medidas de molhabilidade mostraram que houve o molhamento dos filmes pela água, caracterizando-os como hidrofílicos. Os filmes apresentaram uma adesão de 4B e dureza de 3H. Os nanofilmes de sílica confeccionados apresentaram propriedades ópticas e mecânicas satisfatórias para a aplicação solar.

The Electric Discharge Impulse Crushing System (EDICS) is a technology for carrying out crushing by using electrical power and nitromethane. It is designed for construction tasks such as splitting of concrete and rocks.The EDICS consists of an electric discharge generator that supplies a high-voltage high-current pulse, a cartridge that generates power by using electric discharge energy, and cables that connect the electric discharge generator and the cartridge. The cartridge contains a thin metal wire that evaporates because of the electric discharge energy and a nitromethane that reacts with this evaporated metal wire. The cartridge can be used to generate a high pressure on the order of gigapascals within a time interval of several hundred microseconds, and crushing power equivalent to that generated by explosives is generated during this period. In recent years, the EDICS has been widely used in Japan because of its good performance and favorable characteristics.

Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of field tests to improve the understanding of the support interaction mechanics between fully grouted bolts and coal mine roofs and to help lay the foundation for improved design and evaluation techniques. Strain gauges were installed on 14 fully grouted bolts placed in shale roof rock at four mines in Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania to determine how load was transferred between the bolts and the rock. The results of field tests on elastic bolt behavior compared well with previous laboratory work and numerical models. The field tests showed that the anchorage length of grouted bolts installed in shale was slightly longer than the anchorage length determined in laboratory tests conducted in concrete blocks. The field results produced more variability because of geological variations. Tests run past the yield point of the steel bolt indicate that the yield zone varies significantly and translates down the length of the bolt anywhere from 4 to 22 in.

THE nickel-chromium alloys of importance are those containing iron and those free from iron. The most important alloys containing iron, with regard to high tonnage, are the nickel-chromium steels. Straight nickel steel was introduced about the year 1889, but it was not until 1895, when it was found that the addition of chromium greatly increased the FIG. 1.-RESISTIVITY OF NICKEL-CHROMIUM-IRON ALLOYS. strength and resistance to shock, that nickel-chromium steels came into use. The three types of nickel-chromium steels developed at this time were: Type 1, containing 3.50 per -cent. nickel and 1.50 per cent. chromium; type 2, containing 2.00 per cent. nickel and 1.00 per cent. chromium; and type 3, containing 1.50 per cent. nickel and 0.50 per cent. chromium.

Traditional kinematic and statistical analyses of geological structure for geotechnical engineering applications, while considered industry standard practice, have some limitations and unrealistic assumptions. An improved approach involves a discrete fracture network (DFN), a numerical model that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through the rock mass. The DFN technique utilises the structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models used for visualisation and stability analyses.The early development of the DFN approach was largely associated with modelling fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs and nuclear waste isolation programs. With recent improvements to computational power it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses. For tunnelling or slope stability projects DFN modelling provides visualisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a tunnel within the Ashfield Shale unit of the Sydney Basin, Australia. The necessary input parameters and derivation of these, along with the importance of both an accurate engineering geology model and validation of the synthetic fracture network are demonstrated. Multiple realisations of the DFN were analysed to provide an indication of the number and volume of unstable blocks for the proposed tunnel geometry, enhancing support design. In this study the effects of T4 and T6 heat treatments on microstructural characteristics of AZ91 alloy containing Rare Earth elements have been investigated. Formation of intermetallic Al1 1RE3 needle shape particles which have a good thermal stability reduces both formation of ß(Mg17A112) and discontinues precipitation in AZ91 alloy which are dominated at the grain boundaries and are responsible for poor mechanical properties specially in elevated temperatures. For AZ91-RE samples both T4 and T6 heat treatments led to a continuous precipitation of ß particles at the grain boundaries after aging. However, in AZ91 samples (with no Rare Earths) precipitation was discontinuous at grain boundary areas. This type of precipitation is one of the main reasons of poor mechanical properties of this alloy at elevated temperatures.

The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix, widely used as the construction material world-wide. Billions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of CO2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic CO2 emission each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon foot print of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the non-metallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned to extract some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major non-metallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study exhibited that the compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of the conventional concrete prepared using the OPC.

In past drilling programs for a multi-seam Texas lignite reserve, extensive e-log data was collected; however, little laboratory analyses were performed. As a cost and time saving incentive, sampling of lignite was intensified. In a recent drilling program in east-central Texas, detailed laboratory analyses and e-log information was gathered on a multi-seam lignite reserve of the upper Wilcox Group. This data will undergo statistical and geostatistical techniques in an attempt to discern whether or not predicted Ash and Btu/lb values can be derived from the e-log gamma-density relationships. Final characterization of the dataset will be used in a geostatistical model of that reserve. This model will be the basis for further geological investigations and mine planning.

The rate of decay of the energy from a hammer blow to a coal mine roof is related to the size and nature of the contacts between the rock being struck and its surroundings The use of this principle as a basis for testing roof condition in South African coal mines has been investigated under a SIMRAC funded project, with the objective of reducing the number of roof falls. ( I ) A prototype instrument having a simple numeric display related to the energy decay rate (the Acoustic Energy Meter) was constructed and used to carry out surveys at mines covering the range of coal mine roof geology and condition. The equipment was simple to use and provided excellent discrimination between visually intact roof and less stable conditions, once the normal/abnormal threshold had been established for a given site. Areas of potential roof failure were identified close to roof slips and igneous dykes, and confirmed in areas of visible deterioration. Directional stress effects on roof condition were also identified at some sites, with consistent differences in readings obtained depending on the direction of drivage. Repeat surveys also indicated areas where roof conditions were deteriorating with time. Based on the success of the prototype, a hand held version of the instrument. has been developed to a specification from Anglo Coal. This incorporates a simple 'traffic light' green / amber/ red display, making the device suitable for routine use by mine operatives This version is now undergoing trials at an Anglo Coal mine. It is concluded that the Acoustic Energy Meter shows great potential as a test instrument providing output which relates to the stability of the immediate roof.

"The Safety Pays in Mining web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app groups injuries by type, either by the cause of the injury or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 30 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries, including an estimate of additional indirect costs, the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits, and provide some examples of other items (services, equipment) on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining web application by discussing the development of the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app. INTRODUCTION Injuries on the job cause pain and suffering. They can also profoundly affect profits and daily operations. In addition to paying direct costs or increased premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, a company might need to pay overtime for other workers to fill an injured worker’s job role, cover training costs for a replacement worker, or divert administrative resources in the wake of an injury. Safety Pays in Mining is a web app that estimates the distribution of these injury costs and assesses the impact that occupational injuries have on a company’s profits. The costs of specific types of occupational injuries in mining are not readily available as mining and insurance companies don’t usually share this information. As a consequence, companies only have cost information based on previous experience with their own employees. Therefore, if a mine never experienced a finger amputation for one of its miners, it would not be aware of the possible costs associated with this type of injury. In addition, injury costs are unique in that the cost distribution is so wide — with half of the injuries in our dataset having mean costs higher than 90th percentile costs — just using the average cost of a specific injury type does not provide adequate information. Some injuries involve immensely high costs, and even though the risk of these high-cost injuries occurring is low, mines need to be aware of their potential impact on their company’s financial health."

Matching the productivity gains of continuous mining machines with the ever increasing performance levels achieved by longwall units has required creative thinking to assure that development is completed in time for uninterrupted longwall production. By using management information systems to coordinate support operations, the most productive planning decisions can be made. This paper focuses on the role of computer technology tools in achieving improved productivity from both longwall and continuous miner sections. The primary emphasis is on the planning process and the methodology developed to guarantee the best allocation of management and manpower resources.

In a small-scale mining in Brazil?s northeast, scheelite were exploited since 1940?s using a traditional gravity concentration flowchart (composed by jigs and shacking tables) that operates with low efficient for fine particles. Tailing of this plant was submitted to chemical, mineralogical and size characterization. Results pointed 50% smaller than 74µm with a grade of 0.11% WO3. The particle?s size is an important operational variable to heighten recuperation by shacking tables. Tests using Falcon SB40 centrifuge concentrators and shacking table were realized, optimizing their operational variables. Based on the tests results a new flowchart was proposed for concentrating and tailings recovery.
