Ground support continues to be the most important safety consideration in underground mining. The Bureau of Mines has developed a yielding steel post with a capacity of 45 tons and b c1osure allowance of 24 inches in a 6 to 7 foot seam height. The post mechanism in a three piece unit consisting of a top and bottom leg made from standard steel pipe and a separate foot bracket. It develops its load carrying ability when the lower pipe, with an attached interference ring, is forced into the larger top leg. The walls of the top leg are deformed radially and along the axis. Yield continues until the unit bottoms out. Other advantages of the post is that due to its simplicity it can be made at the mine shop level and its cost should be about one-hundred dollars. Prototype units were tested in the laboratory. Based on these results, modifications were made that would make the post perform better as a mine support. Two field tests were conducted. The first test used the units as supplemental support for the wood crib rows in a longwall tailgate. The second and larger field teat had 84 posts placed on salvaged track rails. They were installed on two foot centers in the middle of the entry. Overall the supports functioned well during use in the headgate entry, but problems with the quality of some of the pipe caused localized failures. However, these problems can be attributed to one manufacturer of pipe and through tighter specifications can be eliminated. The use of the posts with the rails is showing additional benefits as a ground support system. By providing continuous support between the posts a beam is created that has much more load bearing. The additional support can reduce floor heave and in some cases eliminate the need for the rib side crib line.

Site conditions of China?s coal roadways are complex and changeable, and scientific classification of them is the fundamental basis for coal roadway support design, with great significance for ensuring proper roadway service. Upon analysis of the issues, a commentary regarding the research progress on classification of the stability of rocks surrounding coal roadways in China has been achieved from the point of view of classification methods and indexes. The shortcomings and applicable scope of rock stability classification methods related to coal roadways have been analyzed. It has been asserted that combining artificial neural networks with fuzzy mathematics, combining fuzzy mathematics with grey theory, applying new avenues such as support vector machine algorithms or unascertained average classification, and making classification indexes more scientific are future directions for development of rock stability classification for coal roadways.

For zinc hydrometallurgical extraction, reducing the electric power consumption of the electrowinning process is an important issue for energy savings. At the Zinc & Lead 2000 symposium, the authors suggested that by using the Pb-0.5%Ag-0.6%Ca alloy, the electrolysis energy can be decreased compared to the conventional Pb-0.9%Ag alloy. In this study, the corrosion behaviors of the Pb-Ag-Ca electrode in a sulfuric-acid electrolyte were investigated. Based on the results Or me Pb-0.5%Ag-0.6%Ca anode after 20 days of electrolysis, the bath voltage and the quantity of anode slime decreased compared to the Pb-I%Ag anode. Subsequently, beta-PbO2 on the electrode surface was detected by XRD and its peaks were sharper than the Pb-1 %Ag anode. Moreover, a dense beta-PbO2 layer on the 0.6%Ca a anode surface was observed. Therefore, it was suggested that the dense beta-PbO2 layer on the anode surface is one of the factors that leads to a lower bath voltage and decreasing quantity of anode slime.

"A comprehensive analysis of the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems has been investigated. Cations chosen for this analysis included groups 1A and 2A, rare-earth elements and other common transition metal ions such as Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Ag+, Cd2+, U4+, UO2 2+, Hg2+, Al3+ and Zn2+. The Newton-Raphson technique was used to calculate and plot various metal species over a wide range of pH. This study has clearly shown that by adjusting the concentration of OH-, the separation of Fe from Mn, U from V, Ce and Eu from other rare-earth elements, and In from Sn is possible. The effects of hydrated metal ions on the separation and removal of various metals from each other under various conditions is discussed.IntroductionThe primary purpose of hydrometallurgical processing is to extract, remove and purify various metals from diverse sources. Hydrometallurgists are frequently preoccupied by the extraction of cations in metallic form, but overlook the important role anions play in such processes. The adaptation of pelletizing processes involves the coordination of various factors such as temperatures, gas flows, productions, etc., in order to obtain optimum performance. The consequent problems are considerable due to the large number involved as well as the lack of knowledge of their correlation. It is therefore essential to establish a fundamental theory which takes into account the heat transfer phenomena and the secondary factors which are relevant to the properties of the product. Straight grate and grate kiln pelletizing processes involve heating of a stationary bed on a travelling grate. The heat transfer conditions are therefore of primary importance. This is why this article pays particular attention to conditions which obtain when a stationary bed is heated, in which certain special reactions occur. The conclusions drawn from this penetration of the heat transfer phenomena can be expressed in postulates acting as guide-lines for the establishment of proto-typal processes. Examples of elaborating such processes are also given in the article. Some operational experience at LKAB are also given.

Productivity achievements in underground coal mining over the past ten years highlight the improvement of management practices as well as the adoption of new technology. Research findings and results from operational studies characterize the aspects of good management that translate into high productivity. In concert with these findings, the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is being developed, under co-sponsorship of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia University Energy and Water Research Center, as a knowledge-based system to enhance more efficient management of underground coal mines. Concentrating on capturing the intricate knowledge needed to manage a mine effectively, MMSS will encompass information and rules on work scheduling, desired work practices, regulations impinging on operations and planning, responses to operating problems, and the labor-management work agreement.

On the bulk basis New York's contribution to the production of oil is small, representing, as it does, a bare half of one per cent of the annual total for the United States. Yet it has more importance than is implied by such a statement. Petroleum includes a variety of organic compounds, some more and some less valuable. It would be a fairer estimate of the situation to say that New York in recent years has produced around 10 to 12 per cent on the average of all Pennsylvania grade oil, the supply of which is strictly limited and the demand steady even in times of overproduction of other grades. One may not infer from this that New York and other Appalachian states enjoy an independent position in the market with a price structure uninfluenced by that of the Mid-Continent, Gulf or California fields. On the other hand, the recent market demoralization in the South and West brought about by uncontrolled production caused prices to drop to a point where the life of the local industry was seriously threatened. The current cost of producing oil in New York under the methods of water-flooding, by which most of the output is now obtained, has been estimated by competent authority at not less than $2.50 a barrel. The Sacaton open pit copper mine has recently been placed into production. Some problems have been encountered in maintaining grade control due to differences between early block estimates and actual production grade. A study was made using three methods for computing grade for 50' x 50' x 40' size blocks from exploration and development drill holes; 1) The polygonal method, 2) The inverse distance squared method, and 3) The geostatistical kriging method. The results of each were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blast holes drilled in the ore over three benches of the new pit. Results indicate that the kriging technique gave better estimates for grade of individual blocks than did the other two methods for this particular deposit.

The West Elk Mine is located near Somerset, Colorado approximately 70 miles southeast of Grand Junction, Colorado and 72 miles southwest of Glenwood Springs, Colorado on state highway 133 (Figure 1). The West Elk Mine was opened January 20, 1982 as the Mount Gunnison #1 Mine operated by the West Elk Coal Company, a division of ARCO Coal. In the early 1990?s ARCO changed the mine name to West Elk Mine and the operating company was renamed Mountain Coal Company. Arch Coal, Inc. purchased the West Elk Mine in 1998. West Elk Mine has produced coal from three different seams. Coal was first mined from the F Seam, the upper most seam in the stratigraphic sequence, from 1982 through 1991. Coal was produced from the B Seam, the lower most seam, starting with continuous miners in 1991 and transitioning to longwall mining in 1992and continued on through October 2008. The development of the E Seam, which is the middle seam in the stratigraphic column, started in 2004 with longwall production commencing in 2008. The ventilation conversion from exhausting to forcing for the E Seam portion of the West Elk Mine was implemented in late October 2009.

The combustion of pulverized coal is a century-old practice. Many people have investigated coal dust and the residual fly ash particles that re-main after combustion. But the combustion process and fly ash formation mechanism are not under-stood. Working at our Maysville, Kentucky lime plant, the Dravo Lime Company Research team has collected samples of partially burned coal dust from the flame of a pulverized coal burner. Specimens were placed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Microscopic examination of the particles, together with a large collection of micrographs of lime dust fused to fly ash particles, now make it possible to theorize as to how combustion advances through a piece of coal dust. Coal is a physical mixture of carbon-based compounds interspersed with bits of ash-forming materials, primarily alumina-silicate compounds. The alumina-silicate materials are commonly in angular nodules measuring 100 A to 700 A across their major dimension. It would appear that if the coal particle is in a well mixed gas stream, combustion starts at the surface and advances radially toward the particle center. With poor gas mixing, it is common that combustion moves from one end of a particle and advances on a broad front almost normal to some axis. In either case the combustion process and ash-forming mechanism are the same. As combustion occurs the carbon-based compounds oxidize in a highly exothermic reaction. Heat from the re-action melts the alumina-silicate nodules causing them to flow together and coalesce into an open sponge-like structure. As melting continues surface tension of the liquid and free surface energy causes the sponge-like structure to simplify into fewer, larger pores. Most likely the lighter molecular weight hydro-carbons burn before the heavier species. This means that as the melting ash structure is metamorphosing to a single large pore, there continues to be out-gasing throughout the structure due to combustion. Surface tension will form a spherical piece of fly ash if the ash material is liquid for a sufficient period of time. Out-gasing from combustion of the heavier hydro-carbons will provide internal gas pressure to keep the particle spherical until it freezes.

In the method used in the Health Branch of the Bureau of Mines for petro-graphic identification of the minerals in a rock, the sample is crushed, ground to a fine powder in a mortar, the powder is put on a slide, a drop of index oil and a cover slip are added, and the slide is ready for examination. The rock should be ground fine enough so that most of the particles consist of only one mineral, otherwise identification is difficult. Finally, the amounts of the minerals present in the sample are estimated to the nearest 5 or 10 percent. When quartz grains are mixed with some claylike minerals) of which by far the most common example is quartz and kaolinite in a shale, grinding in a mortar does not always separate the quartz from the kaolinite; instead, the quartz grains become coated with the kaolinite and are not visible, even after careful search. Talc acts Similarly, but muscovite and pyrophyllite do not. In evaluating the possible silicosis hazard of breathing dust from a shale, it is essential to be able to see and identify all of the quartz grains, as the other minerals present are relatively innocuous.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines paper is to provide the mineral industry with current information on high-speed data processing and to illustrate how some of these techniques can be applied to the industry. The need for applying these techniques is generally recognized, but not much information is readily available on specific applications. This paper briefly describes high-speed data processing and reduction equipment in an effort to familiarize the reader with the functions of the equipment. A list and explanation of some of the possible applications of high-speed data processing for the mineral industry are included. A few of these applications are illustrated by the use of specific examples of existing computer programs or processing methods, including their calculation times and costs. Some of the programs cited herein were developed by the author at the University of Arizona for a Masters thesis in mining engineering. When a reference is made to a specific computer, the reference is given to make the information that is being presented as factual as possible; most of the manufacturer's equipment that is mentioned in the references was available at the University of Arizona, and no specific endorsement of that manufacturer is intended.

"IntroductionCyanidation is the principal process for extracting gold from ores . Many primary gold ores, however, are partially or totally refractory in the conventional cyanidation process.Considerable success has been achieved with new gold leaching techniques, such as intensive cyanidation, pressure cyanidation, carbon-in-leach cyanidation, etc. These techniques however, do not offer substantial gains in gold extraction from refractory pyrites.The more drastic pretreatment processes such as roasting, chemical oxidation, autoclave oxidation, and bacterial oxidation all utilize oxidation to break down the structures of pyrite and arsenopyrite. This generally renders the gold amenable to cyanidation.Comparative cost studies indicate that the oldest commercial pretreatment method, i.e. high temperature roasting, is currently the least expensive option if the sulphuric acid can be sold. It operates with air at atmospheric pressure and is characterized by fast reaction rates. For an alternative hydrometallurgical con centrate treatment method to be competitive, it too should operate with air at atmospheric pressure and with fast reaction rates. The NITROX process meets these conditions."

Borehole (slurry) mining, in which a tool incorporating a water-jet cutter and a downhole slurry pump mines phosphate through a borehole, was field tested in northeastern Florida as part of a Bureau of Mines program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals. Approximately 1700 tons (1.54x106 kg) of phosphate ore were mined at 40 tph (10.1 kg/s) from a depth of 250 ft (76 m). The borehole was filled with water during mining for roof support and to assist slurry pumping. Underwater cutting was enhanced with an air-shrouded water jet. Mined cavities were backfilled to prevent subsidence after abandonment. Roof subsidence during mining was avoided only when the cavity was filled with water. Environmental monitoring before, during, and after mining included hydrological studies and measurements of water quality. Significant water quality changes occurred only in the zone being mined and were confined to the immediate area of the borehole.

"This paper outlines the history of steel linings in the Autogenous Mills, the factors influencing the decision to convert to rubber lining, and the operating and cost experience with the rubber liners to date. INTRODUCTIONSherman Mine is an open pit iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing operation located at Temagami, Ontario. The operation employs 392 hourly employees and 81 salaried employees and has an annual capacity of over one million L.T. of high quality iron ore pellets produced from low-grade magnetite ore.The Sherman Mine is a joint venture; 90% owned by Dominion Foundries and Steel Limited (Dofasco) of Hamilton, Ontario, and 10% owned by the Tetapaga Mining Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company of Cleveland, Ohio. The operation and management of the mine is by Cliffs of Canada, Limited. Development of the property was started in 1965, with pellet plant production beginning on March 17, 1968. At the present time, the orebodies contain sufficient reserves to sustain operations at current production levels for 30 years. Mining was originally carried out in three orebodies, the North, South, and West pits. The North Pit has been exhausted and mining operations ceased in the spring of 1980. A fourth pit, the East Pit, will be developed during the early 1980's."

"The solvent extraction of cerium(III) and samarium(III) from mixed solutions of all rare earth elements (REEs) except promethium using PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), an acidic extractant, was investigated. The effects of aqueous equilibrium pH, various acids (sulfuric acid (H2 SO4 ), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3 )), initial metal ion concentration and extractant concentration on the solvent extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III) were systematically studied. From the experimental results, HNO3 and HCl were found to be the preferred aqueous media for the solvent extraction of both Sm(III) and Ce(III). The most promising experimental conditions of pH, PC88A concentration and metal ion concentration were identified for the extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III). Separation results showed that H2 SO4 at pH 2 provided the best separation between Sm(III) and Ce(III). IntroductionIn recent years, demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has increased significantly because of their many commercial applications. REEs have especially important high-tech applications owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, and they are used in a wide range of areas such as catalysts, ceramics, magnets, lasers, glass, neutron absorption and alloys. As REEs have very similar physicochemical properties, their separation and purification from each other is challenging and gaining significant interest. Samarium (Sm) and cerium (Ce) are found in different REE minerals, including bastnäsite ((Ce,La,Nd(CO3)F), xenotime (YPO4) and monazite ((Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4) at major production sites in the United States and China, as listed in Table 1 (Bleiwas and Gambogi, 2013). The most common acidic organophosphorous extractants used for REEs extraction and separation are DEHPA (di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid), PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), Cyanex 272 (bis-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl phosphinic acid) and Cyanex 301 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid) (Sarangi, Reddy and Das, 1999; Surampally et al., 2012; Tian, Jia and Liao, 2013). Out of these extractants, PC88A is known for providing higher separation factors (Acharya, Mishra and Misra, 2015). El-Hefny et al. (2010) investigated the kinetics of the solvent extraction of Sm from chloride media using sodium salt of Cyanex 272 and reported the extracted species to be Sm(OH)A2•2HA. Lee et al. (2005) investigated the solvent extraction of Sm(III) with PC88A and saponified PC88A from chloride solutions and found the stoichiometry of the extraction reactions to be 1.5 with PC88A and 3 with saponified PC88A."
