There have been many different brands of high precision caps introduced on the US market in the last five years. High precision timing definitely effects the performance of the blast. One should be able to optimize fragmentation and minimize environmental effects with the use of high precision caps and selection of the proper time period. The consumer who purchases the caps may not be fully aware of the tolerances in firing times of caps used in the field. This paper will discuss results of field tests of cap tolerances from an independent study conducted by Precision Blasting Services.

The steel industry's increased demand for higher grade pellets has caused the pellet producers to investigate methods of upgrading their product. The Hanna Mining Company's Groveland plant is no exception. The Groveland Mine is located in Dickinson County on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The low grade iron deposit is a complex mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, quartz, jasper, and various iron silicates. (1) Beneficiation is by Humphrey spirals and anionic flotation of the iron minerals. (2) A general flowsheet is shown in Figure 1. Flotation of the spiral tailings makes up about 75% of the concentrate. A minor amount of concentrate, less than 3%, is produced in magnetic circuits. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 1.6 million tons per year.

This report is the first in a "final" series of publications on the Juneau Mining District (JMD). This volume summarizes the results of Bureau of Mines (Bureau) investigations in the JMD during the period 1984-1988. Volume 2 consists of a detailed description of Bureau investigations of mineral de-posits, prospects, and occurrences. Volume 3 is a report on industrial minerals within the district. This study has identified and examined more than 300 mines, prospects, and occurrences containing gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, and PGM. More than 20 of these were discovered during this study. An additional 20 prospects not mentioned in the literature were rediscovered during the JMD study.

Mine planning and production scheduling in surface mines are basically iterative processes which are ideally suited to the use of computer-based techniques. Both processes are truly three-dimensional and lend themselves to the application of 3-D interactive graphics. Until recently, this has applied the need for the costly, dedicated graphics screens and mid range minicomputers. However, ongoing advances in processor chip design led to the emergence of inexpensive and powerful 5 to 10 Mips desktop work- stations. These workstations have the processing power to support rapid, high resolution, 3-dimensional graphics. By combining these workstations with powerful 3-D CAD software and, with a suite of comprehensive mine planning and scheduling applications, Mincom has developed a most cost effective solution to modern mine planning challenges.

The LaModel program has been used successfully in the United States for many years to design pillars to ensure global stability of pillar recovery operations. However, the recent Crandall Canyon Mine collapse showed that further research was required to improve the design of pillar recovery under deep cover. Toward this end, a new calibration procedure was implemented in LaModel. This calibration procedure prescribes techniques for calibrating the critical LaModel input parameters based on empirical abutment loading and pillar strength, as utilized in the time-tested ALPS and ARMPS programs. The calibration procedure is intended to help guide a novice modeler in choosing calibrated input parameters that produce a standard model that fits within the verification database. However, the rigid parameter specification incorporated in the calibration procedure also removes most of the flexibility in LaModel for specific calibration to the unique conditions at a given mine site. In this paper, a number of the LaModel input parameters are varied outside the bounds of the suggested calibration and the effects on the model results are analyzed. Ultimately, it is shown how the LaModel user might vary certain input parameters to adjust the model to site-specific conditions, while still maintaining the general accuracy and philosophy of the recommended calibration.

During the first 6 months of 1948 the Bureau of Mines investigated the titania, deposit on the Wynn 0. Christy property in northern Hot Spring County, Ark. The property is situated in Magnet Cove, about half a mile north of the Magnet Store and U. S. Highway 270 (fig. 1). The purpose of the investigation was to determine the extent and grade of the ore body and to obtain a representative sample of the ore in as nearly natural condition as possible for use in metallurgical testing. All of the titania that has been marketed from Arkansas mines has been in the form of rutile from a deposit about 2 miles west of the Christy property. The titania in the Christy property occurs principally as brookite, which, with fragments of novaculite, quartz, and limonite, is imbedded in red clay. It is difficult to recover a core of the material. Three types of drills - a diamond drill, a bucket drill, and a Baker cable-coring tool operated on a churn rig - were employed in an effort to procure proper samples in their natural state. The Baker tool was found to be the most efficient and to be capable of drilling to a depth of 150 feet, making 80 to 100 percent core recovery (fig. 8). Total footage drilled was 1,536.9 in 21 holes, of which 7 were diamond-drill holes, 13 were bucket drill holes, and one was drilled with the Baker tool. The ore body was found to be 900 feet long, 500 feet wide, and more than 141 feet deep and contained 5.8 percent TiO2 and 0.52 percent 1720. Most of the deeper drill holes bottomed in ore, and there is a possibility that the ore may persist to a depth of several hundred feet. The Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines is conducting experimental work at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo., for the purpose of developing methods of concntrating and utilizing the ore.

n approach to the study of the electrical properlies of drilling muds, their cakes and their filtrates was made by treating the drilling fluid as a porous medium. Lluring this study it was found that the weight pararneter was omitted from previous investigations on electrical properties. Patnode in 1949 made a similar approach to ,his investigation. His work showed that there was a variation of resistivity relationships with per cent Puid present in a given suspension. This present study ex-tends Patnode's investigation to one in terms of the solids fraction of the drilling fluids. Previous investigations were made on low weight muds where the effect of the rolids fraction was obscured. The following equationr were fitted to data taken from 94 field muds and 47 laboratory muds (see Tables I and 2). The parameter, C, is a complex function of the solidr content, or mud weight, of a drilling fluid. It was also found that for all drilling muds examined. A nomograph is presented combining Eqs. I and 2. INTRODUCTION It is generally recognized that the materials present in drilling muds affect the relationship between mud filtrate and mud resistivities. However, most electric log interpretations proceed with the assumption that the mud resistivity and temperature are the only important parameters needed to obtain a filtrate resistivity or a mud cake resistivity. Lamont1 suggests that only average relationships exist between mud cake, mud filtrate and mud resistivities. He indicates that there is limited accuracy when these intercorrelated factors are used since no other measure-able variable is apparent. A previous paper by Patnode indicates that drilling fluids may be considered to be a system of fluids in solid particles which may be correlated electrically in a manner similar to rock solids. 1 he equation for the resistivity factor. F = (per cent fluid) is satisfied for a given clay type in water, but the value of m varies as different materials are used in the water. The resistivity factor is not constant for a given amount of clay. As is suspected it varies as the solids fraction conducts electrical current. Since both weighting material and clay solids are present in commonly used drilling fluids, it is expected that both materials contribute to the variation of the m factor in Eq. 3. An extension of Patnode's work is presented in this paper to show some of the interrelations which exist between the resistivities of mud cake, mud filtrate and mud. Use of these data enable a more accurate calculation of mud filtrate and mud cake resistivities if only the mud resistivity and weight are measured. EXPERIMENTAL The measurements of mud weight, fluid and solids resistivity, alkalinity, and chloride content of mud samples were made in this research. Mud samples representing drilling fluids from 94 Louisiana and Texas wells (Table 1) and 47 laboratory-constructed systems (Table 2) were used in the experimentation. The measurements of the mud properties were made both in the field and in the laboratory. The tests on the properties of weight, alkalinity and chloride ion were standard tests as described by API specifications. Tati Nickel is currently operating a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant in Botswana, using the Activox® process developed by LionOre Technology, to produce nickel cathode and a cobalt salt from a sulphide concentrate. Cobalt is extracted using Cyanex 272. This reagent also extracts all the iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, and manganese from the nickel stream. Versatic 10 carboxylic acid is then used as extractant to recover nickel from the stream, separating it from calcium and magnesium, and upgrading it to provide a suitable advance electrolyte for nickel electrowinning. However, the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium is limited, and gypsum formation in the extraction circuit is a problem when it is attempted to maximise the recovery of nickel. Mintek has developed a synergistic system with Versatic 10 for improved separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium. Laboratory test work was conducted on the raffinate of the cobalt solvent extraction circuit to optimise the Versatic 10/Nicksyn? (Mintek synergist) system to be employed. Extraction and stripping parameters suitable for this stream were optimised in the laboratory and then applied on the demonstration plant. A commercial batch (0.5 tons) of Nicksyn? reagent was produced for the demonstration plant. The laboratory test work results and the demonstration plant performance are discussed in detail in this paper.

"The modelling of bath type furnaces tends to be either fundamental in nature or total empirical ""black box models"". While models of the first kind are robust, they tend to lack accuracy, in cases where they are to be used for process control, and may take an overly long in development time. On the other hand, black box models tend to lack robustness of prediction for all circumstances and tend to be limited to interpolate based on historical data. While this may very often provide short-term accuracy, the models may have problems with stability in the long term. Moreover, the model structure may not reflect any of the fundamental properties of the system and remains opaque to fundamental analysis. The aim of the model development is in obtaining a model that have robustness, high accuracy, a short development time and which is adaptive to a changing environment. The models are specifically developed for on-line decision support or control of furnaces. The modelling approach is evaluated for a chromite bath smelting furnace. The role of systems analysis, mass balance smoothing, thermodynamic analysis are integrated into one generic algorithm for bath type furnaces. Not only are fundamental process relationships such the mass and energy balances satisfied through a scientific method of data reconciliation; the proposed modelling approach allows adaptive prediction, the first step towards predictive control or metallurgical decision support.It is shown that neither an ARMAX model only, nor a purely equilibrium model only, could predict the dynamics of the process very well. However, a combination of the two approaches more than doubled the accuracy as measured by the R2. It was noted for carbon dissolved in the alloy, that the improvement in R2 in using a hybrid modelling approach was more than the sum of the R2 of the individual traditional approaches. Similar improvements in modelling performance were noted for all other species.It shows further that process dynamics may totally overshadow the effect of thermochemical equilibrium (even when the thermochemical equilibrium prediction includes the recycled alloy and slag heels as additional feeds). The exclusion of process dynamics therefore leads to erroneous results."

The results of the process control improvement project aimed at improving the quality of Australian Bulk MineralsÆ (ABM) iron ore pellets produced by four vertical shaft furnaces are very positive. These results are achieved through process stabilisation and optimisation, improvement in process monitoring and taking early corrective actions when operating variables were outside the target ranges. A number of benefits are obtained from this project. These benefits include: More consistent and improved pellet quality. The average cold compression strength (CCS) value of pellets produced during the eight-month trial is 260 kg/pellet, which is 16 kg/pellet higher than that produced during the 12 months prior to the trial (244 kg/pellet). Reduction in the heat input by eight per cent, from 727 MJ/tonne to 668 MJ/tonne. Reduction in bentonite rate by six per cent, from 7.1 kg/tonne to 6.7 kg/tonne. Increase in the furnace throughput rate by four per cent and additional production of 10 000 tonnes per annum through process stabilisation. Better understanding of the process behaviour. This knowledge is valuable not only for setting the target operating conditions but also for developing the ABM expert system to control the process.

Heavy liquids have come into use in ore-dressing investigations, as they make possible the separation of an ore into its specific-gravity components. A paper containing a general dissertation on heavy liquids has been written by John D. Sullivan,4 and the practical application of heavy liquids is explained by Box and Crabtree5. Some heavy liquids become discolored after continued use, and the lack of transparency impairs their value. Since they are fairly expensive, reclaiming is desirable. This paper briefly discusses the preparation and care of some of the more common heavy liquids.

A RETURN to nonwar conditions characterized the year 1946. The acquisition and forced use, under Government auspices, of low-grade and uneconomic ores, both foreign and domestic, ceased in 1945, but there was some carry-over into the early months of 1946. The world shipping situation delayed the procurement of some foreign ores, but conditions were improving by the end of the year. No actual shortage of any important alloy was experienced, hence the industry was able to make prompt shipment of orders placed. Price levels of ferroalloys, which had remained virtually constant through the war years, were forced upward, with increases on specific products as conditions necessitated. Standard ferroman-ganese and low-carbon ferrochrome were notable exceptions in that their price did not change. No new ferroalloy smelting plants were constructed. The Defense Plant Corp.. sold the works at Ashtabula, Ohio, to the Electro Metallurgical Co. A new type of ferroalloy furnace was described at the Birmingham meeting of the Electrochemical Society. Solis from an abandoned Pb battery processing facility were characterized prior to the selection of the extraction technique. Reflected light microscopy and electron beam methods were used to locate Pb-bearing phases and to quantify the compositions of the phases. It was found that the soils are composed primarily of quartz and feldspars with minor amounts of iron and titanium oxides. Lead is primarily present as an oxide or sulfate that is associated with the silicate minerals. Specific phases identified were PbO; Pb02; cerrusite, PbCO3; angleslte, PbSO4; galena, PbS; and magnetoplumbite, 2PbO3Fe2O3; or plumboferrite PbO2Fe2O3?

Well logging techniques, as used successfully in oil and gas exploration, can also be used to give a detailed evaluation of drill holes through industrial mineral deposits such as sulphur. This paper describes the logging tools used gives the theory behind the well-log interpretation and discusses the application of the method in sulphur-bearing limestone and m more complex sulphur deposits.

The CTC (Certified Trading Chains) mineral certification system has been piloted in Rwanda since late 2008. CTC project implementation is jointly driven by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the Rwanda Geology and Mines Authority (OGMR), in cooperation with other national stakeholders. Five Rwandan mineral producers participate in the CTC project with their flagship mining concessions. Based on independent third-party audits, CTC certifies supply chain due diligence measures of these companies engaged in the artisanal mining sector through on-the-ground assessments of mining conditions, transparency, as well as mineral origin and traceability. The CTC system thus allows responsible mineral producers and their clients to verifiably demonstrate supply chain due diligence and good governance in conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

The design of solvent extraction plants has been generally based on the assumption of steady operating conditions in both the settler and the mixer units. However, recent experience in both large and small plants has shown this not to be the case. Mixer transients include start up aqueous locking and partial phase separation in secondary mixers, which both lead to reduced plant capacity or overflow of upstream mixers. Analysis of the hydraulic pressure profiles has generated new design methods to eliminate the effects of the partial or complete phase separation. Changes to the method of specification and selection of primary and secondary mixers have been made to eliminate the onset of partial separation during operation. The observation of settler operation has shown that it is also a dynamic process, even under "steady-state" conditions. Four transient phenomena have been identified that lead to internal circulating flows, poor disengagement of fine secondary haze and erratic and high entrainment levels in the discharges. A, first approximation analysis has shown that there are significant pressure differentials within settlers, and these change along the length and with the phase separation rates. A technique to control the effects of these transients was developed that allows plant performance to be improved beyond "standard" expectations. The process of excavating and mining coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata. The fractures provide pathways for gas released from coal seams and other gas-bearing strata to flow into the mine workings. Coal seam gas typically contains high concentrations of methane with lesser concentrations of carbon dioxide. Low concentrations of other gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide and ethane may also be present in some coal seams. In certain geological settings, particularly in close proximity to geological structures, such as faults and dykes, the concentration of gases contained in a coal seam can vary significantly between methane-rich to carbon dioxide-rich.In mine design and planning it is vital that mining engineers gather sufficient information to accurately determine the content and composition of the gas present in the coal seam and develop an understanding of changes in these parameters within the planned mining area.The longwall method of mining coal causes fracturing of the overlying and underlying strata behind the retreating longwall face. Where coal seams and other gas-bearing strata are present within the caving zone, gas will be released from the strata leading to contamination of the mine workings. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the mine ventilation, the concentration of gas in the mine may exceed the statutory limit, resulting in production delays and potentially unsafe conditions.CITATION:Black, D J, 2016. The characteristic problems related to drilling a hole for evaluation of an orebody are generally quite similar, whether we're drilling a core hole, or a hole to obtain chip samples. The basic objective in each case is fundamentally an economic factor; to produce the maximum amount of usable information per hole at a reasonable footage price. The success of the drilled hole depends largely upon the amount of investigation and research spent on the prospective area and the ability to forecast the capable personnel needed plus the right kind of drills, ancillary equipment such as bits, muds and various additives necessary to make the drilling program successful. The driller is confronted with a wide variation of drilling problems due to the nature of subsurface conditions. Some of these problems are: overburden, which may consist of clays; sand; boulders; or glacial till. These surface conditions may exist up to 2,000 feet in depth and upon reaching bedrock, formations may consist of swelling shales, broken sandstones, and every conceivable rock-type, coupled with every known structural problem such as dips, faults, folds, etc., and to this added extras such as permafrost and/or ground water problems combine to increase the necessity why an understanding of the problems along with the proper reaction of the driller plus the formula to compensate for ground conditions is necessary to complete a drill hole. Since most geologists are familiar with diamond core drilling techniques, I would like to discuss other methods used in evaluating ore deposits.

This morning I would like to speak to you about an area of chemistry that is enjoying a revival-organometallic compounds. This renewed interest, principally stimulated by defense needs, has already created new markets for the products of the mineral industry. Although the consumption of metals in these new products is modest at oresent, several hold promise of importance. Because this is a new and growing market, I am sure the Council of Economics is aware of many of its facets and is interested in new developments. Of course, the chemical industry has been a significant consumer of minerals for many years. I estimate that in 1957 the chemical-industry purchased a total of $1175 million worth of minerals as raw materials (not including fuels). This report describes the response to high- temperature sulfatization of a variety of manganese minerals and companion compounds which may occur either as a principal component or as a gangue material in low- grade manganese deposits . Fourteen manganese samples representing oxide , carbonate , and silicate minerals as well as seven compounds which might occur as gangue with manganese minerals were tested batchwise in a bench- scale apparatus under conditions which would be favorable for the sulfatization of manganese . The manganese minerals substantiated thermodynamic predictions and responded to sulfatization but to varying degrees . The gangue materials , MgO , MgCO,, CaO , and CaCO3 , were sulfatized readily in contrast to the iron oxides and the aluminacontaining material which were not .
