Research and development studies were carried out at the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to produce a synthetic forsterite sand from asbestos tailings for Les Sables Olimag Inc. The National Research Council of Canada also supported and collaborated to the project. Theoretically, the technological approach consists of a heat at over 1300°C; however, the process without additive would result in the production of an enstatite-rich product (MgSiO3) having a fusion temperature less than 1600°C. The purpose was to foster the formation of forsterite (Mg2SiO4), a more refractory compound. The fabrication of the forsterite product requires pre-agglomeration of serpentine-MgO with a binder, which is stable at high temperature, to prevent the loss of the powdered magnesium oxide as dust in the kiln off gases and to maintain the mixture homogeneous during the process. Characterization of the end products with respect to mineral composition and thermal resistance are described. The synthetic forsterite in sand form was tested with success under a bath of liquid steel maintained at 1700°C for up to two hours. The advantages of the new sand and its potential applications will be reviewed.

"Safe and efficient mining of extremely inclined thick coal seams less than 20m thick is one of the new challenges in China coal industry. In recent years, the extremely inclined thick coal seams have been encountered in some old mines and western China, and currently the top coal caving longwall mining method has been successfully applied to this kind of coal seams. Accordingly, this paper studies the roof movement and its impact on shield supports of top-coal caving longwall mining in extremely inclined thick coal seams. The structure of main roof before failure was simulated by the fix-ended beam, and provided the solutions for determination of maximum compressive stress of the bottom beam end and maximum tensile stress of the top beam end. The failure mode on the upper end of working face is mainly a combination of compression and shearing, while that for the bottom end is tension and shearing. Roof fracture begins at the upper end of working and propagates downward. The shape of collapsed roof strata can be described as parabolic and divided into three segments from top to bottom, including no filling, uneven filling and densely filling segments. The roof loading conditions of no filling segment is more likely to have dynamic burst impacts.INTRODUCTIONExtremely inclined thick coal seam refers to that the dip angle of coal seam is greater than 45° and the thickness is greater than 3.5m (Wang and Zhang, 2015a; Wang and Zhang, 2015b; Wang, 2005; Xie, Gao, and Shangguan, 2005; Wu, et al., 2014; Deng and Wang, 2014; He, et al., 2015). This type of coal seams can be divided into three categories: 1. The extremely inclined thick coal seam, of which the thickness is less than 5m and the dip angle is less than 60°, is usually mined by fully-mechanized longwall mining method. 2. The extremely inclined thick coal seam, of which the thickness is 5 m-20m, is usually mined by top coal caving longwall method. And 3. When the thickness of extremely inclined thick coal seam is greater than 20m, it is mined by the horizontal section top coal caving longwall method. For example, the average angle ofWudong coal mine in Xinjiang province is 45°, and the thickness is 27m. Wudong coal mine is applying the horizontal section top coal caving longwall mining, producing 3 million tons annually per working face (Figure 1)."

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of the underground mines operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). DMLZ is located approximately 1,500 m below ground level, where dominant rock types are skarn and diorite. The DMLZ mine and layout was designed based on the previous mine located above ground, the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ). The DOZ mine, located approximately 1,000 m below ground level, was a proven success, with a maximum capacity of 80K tonnes per day. During the production ramp up, which started in 2015, the DMLZ experienced several seismic events. The most significant event occurred in January 2018 with a recorded magnitude of more than 2.0 Mw, which resulted in a 14-month delay of the undercutting until March 2019. The significant event in January 2018 required the DMLZ to apply several adjustments related to the mining plan to help ensure it could continue development and achieve production target safely. This paper will describe the changes in the DMLZ mine plan as a response to the seismic activity at the mine, the reason behind the decisions being made to change the mine plan and strategy, as well as strengths and weaknesses between the previous plan compared with the new plan.

Os compósitos a base de cBN são produzidos sinterizando cBN e seus ligantes sob condições de altas pressões e altas temperaturas (APAT). O presente trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização microestrutural dos compósitos nanoestruturados de cBN, processados sob altas pressões e altas temperaturas, com parâmetros de pressão de 6,6 GPa e 1800oC e tempo de processamento cíclico e acíclico. Os compósitos produzidos foram testados na usinagem de aço 4140. Os resultados mostraram que uma melhor densificação e uma menor perda de massa dos compósitos durante a usinagem tem relação com os parâmetros de sinterização e com o tempo de processamento.

The art of rock mechanics has been applied in various forms since early man first used caves for housing and fashioned rocks into weapons, tools, and utensils. The development of the science of rock mechanics has occurred in a slow but steady fashion due to the complexity of the materials, geometries, and loading conditions involved. It encompasses a great diversity of topics ranging from techniques for rock destruction to those required for rock strengthening or support, and as such enters daily into the life of the mining engineer. Although today rock mechanics can be confidently used in competent geologic structures, the degree of confidence diminishes as the structures become more complex and the number of geologic defects become more numerous. Even so, the principles still give a better estimate of the structural behavior of underground openings than ever before, and the persons responsible for design and control draw freely and often on the subject. Although it was known some years ago at the Utah Copper Co. mills that fine grinding improved flotation recoveries, no accurate data were available until recently as to just how far the grinding could be carried economically. In 1923 the ultimate degree of fineness for flotation feed was supposed to be about 10 per cent. on 65 mesh, with approximately 55 per cent. through 200 mesh, which meant that most of the mineral would pass 100 mesh. At this time Garfield and Wilfley tables were used ahead of flotation and a good deal of the coarse mineral removed prior to the ball mill regrind. Shortly afterwards, mill-scale tests developed the fact that on a feed containing not over 10 per cent. +65-mesh material flotation alone would give a copper recovery equal to that obtained by the combination of tables and flotation, but that on much coarser feed the recovery with flotation alone was lowered. This was at a time when all the sulfide minerals were floated if possible, so that the only requisite was to grind fine enough to free the mineral from gangue. Earliest Use of Microscopic Examination of Tailings As early as 1921, the writer had attempted to determine by chemical analysis the relative proportions of copper minerals in tailings from an ore that made extremely poor flotation results. Chemical analysis was not satisfactory or conclusive, and samples of these tailings were sent to the U. S. Bureau of Mines Station at the University of Utah for microscopic examination. The question at that time was to determine, if possible, which copper minerals had been lost and why, but R. E. Head, in his report, revealed other interesting data. He said in part: Briefly stated, the mineral partieles or grains may be classified into scparate groups as follows: 1. Free grains of pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively, which contain 110 other included sulfides; 2. Grains in which all three of the copper sulfides are representel (the core may be of chalcopyrite, partially altered to boruite, these two minerals being cntirely surrounded by a shell of chalcocite); 3. Grains composed of equal amounts of bornite and chalcocite or chalcopyrite and chalcocite. The grains of free mineral particles are perhaps the most numerous, taking the ore as a whole, but it is noticeable that of the grains of combined or associated sulfides

"INTRODUCTION In the manufacture, storage, transportation, and use of combustible gases and vapors, explosion hazards, which at times may be present when air becomes mixed with the gases and vapors, become of primary importance. Such conditions are especially dangerous where large volumes of gaseous atmosphere are involved, because an explosion under such circumstances is capable of doing tremendous damage to both property and personnel.Because of its interest in safety in the mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated, and published results dealing with, the explosibility of various types of combutible atmospheres. The explosion hazards of natural gases have received attention, and results giving the limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures in air have been determined and published. 4/ Other investigations have shown how explosions of natural gas-air mixtures may be prevented by the addition of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. 5/Because of the increased demand for crude oil for war purposes, the application of secondary-recovery methods of stimulating oil production have received considerable attention during the last few years. The process consists in the injection of natural gas into partly depleted oil wells to cause the oil in the sands to flow into producing wells and so increase the amount of recoverable oil. 6/"

The design and construction of foundations for power transmission line towers present some special problems. This paper describes a system of design and construction for these foundations that was developed in Europe and has attained general use there because of its reliability and cost effectiveness. Transmission line foundations distinguish themselves by having to deal not only with compressive and lateral loads, but with uplift loads and, because of the wind (in some regions earthquakes), with dynamic loading. The construction of transmission line foundations distinguishes itself mainly in the great number of inaccesible locations involved, resulting in extensive geotechnical investigation and logistical problems in moving men, materials and equipment.

"In July 2004 workers at the ABI Smelter in Bécancour (Quebec, Canada) went on strike. Contingency plan were ready to face the situation and plan was done to operate one potline out of three. Two lines were stopped; keeping in mind the restart on cold metal after the strike was over. The subject to be presented and shared includes a summary of work organization including training, schedule of restart, pot cleaning, pot preparation, crash start method, follow up after crash start, safety and environment. This major project has been a very big challenge. It shows that people involvement is a must and the key success. It is then true to say : ""People who believe in success will work and act in order to get there"" and ""People who don't believe in success will act in such a way to fail"" Then both will prove they were right to think their own way ! Sharing such experience can be interesting because it's a true story and people like true stories."

In the event of damage to a tank car loaded with a pressurized flammable fluid, it may sometimes be necessary to perform controlled on-site vent, drain and burn operations. Existing techniques required refinement to achieve the desired safety and procedural reliability for use in emergency situations.

"INTRODUCTION Information on the exploeibility and ease of ignition of acetylene is important in connection with investigations by the Bureau of Mines and others seeking the causes of explosions in medium-pressure acetylene generators.A previous report 6/ gave preliminary results of an investigation made by this Bureau to determine the causes of these explosions. This report indicated the need of amending Federal specifications for ""1/4 by 1/12"" carbide to reduce the amount of fine sizes permitted under the specifications then in force. Tests described in the above report showed that certain sizes of carbide may, under certain conditions, attain excessively high temperatures when acetylene-water vapor mixtures are passed through carbides for extended periods.Federal specifications P-0-101, Amendment 5, June 28, 1944, are now in effect. These latest specifications permit a maximum of 7 percent of ""1/4 by 1/12"" carbide by weight to pass through a 0.0661-inch sieve and a maximum of 2 percent to pass through a 0.0555-inch sieve. Experience has shown that these specifications have insured a safer size range of carbide for medium-pressure acetylene generators.Although the improvement in the size range of the carbides has aided in the prevention of explosions, there have been explosions in which the carbide used at the time of the explosion met the latest Federal specifications."

In December 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed the widening of the eastbound tunnel on Interstate 70 (I-70) from two lanes to three. Work on the westbound tunnel began earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in December. The Twin Tunnels project is located in the mountains about 55 km (35 miles) west of Denver. They were bored during the 1960s when I-70 was being built and became the main access to Colorado?s growing number of ski areas and the state?s Western Slope. Throughout the decades following their construction, traffic on I-70 continued to increase and now the tunnels have a major bottleneck. Com-mutes to and from the mountain resorts, particularly on weekends, have become long and slow. Adding a third lane through the tunnels will help alleviate the congestion. (A complete report on the project can be found in T&UC, December 2013, page 61.) Once the eastbound tunnel was completed late last year, CDOT authorized the funding to begin work on the westbound side. That made economic sense, as the equipment used on the eastbound tunnel needed to only be shifted across I-70 to begin work on the westbound side, rather than removing it in December and bringing it back in March when construction began on the westbound tunnel. Work on the westbound tunnel uses essentially the methods that were used on the eastbound tunnel ? removal of the existing concrete lining and using drill-and-blast methods for tunneling widening. The main difference between the two tunnels is that the westbound side requires more blasting on both ends to widen I-70 to three lanes.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed Cu exchange capacity (CuEe) tests on Ca and Na mont-morillonites and attapulgite clays. Mathematical models were developed from the data that the CuEe's are derived from for each clay as a function of pH, Cu concentration, and the concentrations of metal ions, which compete with Cu for exchange sites. An analysis was made of the impact of competing ions on Cu losses due to ion exchange. The results show that the CuEC's of clays, and hence Cu losses, are decreased by the presence of competing ions, and that AI and Mg have the largest impact of those cat-ions normally present in Cu leaching solutions.

This report is the first of a series dealing with the oil-shale reserves of the Green River formation in the Rocky Mountain Region. The known oil-shale reserves of northwestern Colorado at present considered to have economic value apparently are confined to the Piceanco Creek basin between the Colorado and White Rivers. The number of sampled sections is small, but there can be little doubt that the Piceance Creek basin is a potential source of enormous quantities of liquid fuels and the related byproducts obtained from oil-shale processing. The partly blocked and inferred oil-shale reserves of 25-gallon-a-ton shale are estimated to have an oil yield of 125 billion barrels and the reserves of 15-gallon-a-ton shale are estimated to have an oil yield of 494 billion barrels. The number of available sampled sections is inadequate for making firm estimates.

Ever since British Columbia started the ball rolling in 1974 with the introduction of its now-defunct Mineral Royalties Act, all Canada's resource-based provinces have significantly altered their mining tax systems. The last resource-based province to abandon its pre -1974 mining tax structure is New Brunswick, which introduced a new mining tax regime in the summer of 1977 to take effect from April 1 1977. The new structure, which represents the outcome of considerable study and discussions with industry representatives, contains some intriguing concepts which make Nero Brunswick's new mining tax system unique among the Canadian provinces.

SINCE the inception of dredge mining, the attention of engineers and operators has been directed primarily toward mechanical improvements and refinements calculated to, reduce operating costs and to increase recoveries. The result has been to develop an efficient excavating and value-saving machine, which, in some instances, has an actual capacity of 15,000 cu yd. per day. Steel hulls and superstructures minimize the risk of destruction by fire and lengthen the life of the plant. Dredges now restore, to some extent, agricultural possibilities to mined ground. Large buckets, with correspondingly heavy parts, are able to handle heavy wash and massive boulders. Mechanical weaknesses have been strengthened. The use of manganese steel in bucket lines and tumblers permits the application too the bank of a digging force that can be withstood only by solid material, such as rock, cement or frozen ground. Various alloys of steel have been applied to certain duties and experiments in their heat treatment are still progressing. Haulage by tractor or truck is in common use. Discarded and worn steel parts are repaired or rebuilt by the use of the oxy-acetylene flame and the arc-welding machine. Gold and platinum saving is more efficient, although still subject to improvement. Dredging for tin ore is in successful operation. Crews are now highly specialized and experience has developed improved methods of work; particularly in the manipulation of dredges to build levees of tailings and to leave open waterways where desired. To sum up by the distribution of overhead expense over several units, ground under favorable conditions can now be dredge-mined for 5)2 c. per cu: yd., in spite of the increase in cost of supplies, power, and labor during, the past few years. Improvements in prospecting methods, however, have not kept pace with mechanical developments. Standard practices of ; testing ground today produce only wide approximations of values; although they obtain information concerning the character of the deposit and bedrock. It is interesting to note that few important changes in the methods of ten years ago are .to be recorded; the latest comparisons between pros¬pecting results and mined recoveries-have been at such variance as to cause confusion to the operator, and, in a degree, the sacrifice of the confidence of the capitalist. Three comparatively simple, efficient, and rapid extraction methods for the dissolution of yttrium and rare-earth elements from a euxenite carbonate residue have been developed, using dilute sulfuric acid as the solvent. Extraction processes have resulted in yields of 98+ percent of the total rare-earth elements and yttrium contained in the residue and have given preliminary separation between the cerium-group and the yttrium-group rare-earth elements. Extraction procedures presented are: Procedure 1. -The recovery of total rare-earth elements and yttrium by a cold dilute sulfuric acid leach at a pH of 2.5. Procedure 2. -The recovery of yttrium and yttrium-group rare-earth elements by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid at 125° F. and a pH of 3.0, with subsequent recovery of the cerium-group rare-earth elements by a cold dilute sulfuric acid leach of the residue at a pH of 2.5. Procedure 3. -The recovery of the total rare-earth elements and yttrium by fractional leaching as in procedure 1, followed by boiling the sulfate solution, which precipitates the cerium-group rare-earth elements and leaves the yttrium-group rare-earth elements in solution.

EFFECTIVE methods for determining grade and reserves of pegmatites in advance of mining have been developed in recent years. When intensive work began on the economic geology of pegmatites during the early years of World War 11, it was widely believed that grade and reserves could be estimated only in a most general way. The literature indicated that not all pegmatite deposits are unpredictable, but statements emphasizing unpredictability and irregularity seem to have been more widely accepted. Many standard references reflect the prevailing opinion that minerals: are unsystematic in their occurrence in pegmatites. Pegmatites have been described as "notorious for their irregular structure," and minerals within pegmatites as "irregularly distributed." "irregularly disseminated," of "erratic occurrence," "proverbially erratic in distribution," "characterized by extreme irregularity in ... size and distribution of the essential minerals, and variety and proportion of the accessory minerals," and "spotty.'"" Over many years, however, geologic techniques have been applied with increasing success to economic analysis of pegmatites. Investigations, chiefly since 1939, have shown that mineral distribution and structure of pegmatites are largely systematic and that detailed geologic study can be used to predict the size and shape of mineral deposits in pegmatites. Because the writers are most familiar with the pegmatites of the Black Hills, S. D., examples cited are from that area." Pegmatites mined in other dis- * All examples are described more cornpletely elsewhere.: tricts are similar to those in the Black Hills," and the techniques described here have been applied by geologists and engineers working in other districts. In actual practice few pegmatite mine operators attempt to make accurate estimates of grade and reserves in advance of mining. Many deposits are too small for mining except on a very small scale; few pegmatite mines have more than ten employes. Hence there is little systematic preparation for mining, and the capital outlay may be so small that only a general knowledge of reserves is necessary. Technical personnel are rarely employed by pegmatite mine operators to make such estimates. In the future, however, as capital outlay becomes larger, estimates of grade and reserves will have to be more accurate. Geologic Aspects of Determining Grade and Reserves Estimating grade and reserves requires that the type of pegmatite, the size and shape, and the internal structure be determined by detailed geologic mapping and careful mineralogic study. The wide variations in the texture and distribution of minerals within many pegmatite deposits make a thorough geologic study of this kind necessary before it is possible to decide what sampling methods should be used to determine mineral content or grade. Types of Pegmatites: The first step in economic appraisal of a pegmatite is to determine the min-eralogical and structural type. In general, pegmatites may be classified into two groups: 1) those in which component minerals are more or less evenly distributed throughout the entire body and show relatively minor variations in texture, and 2) those in which component minerals have been segregated into units with recognizable differences in texture, mineralogy. or both. Johnston" has classified these types of pegmatites as homogeneous and heterogeneous, respectively. Cameron et al.10 have used the terms ~inzoned and zoned for similar types. The difference between the homogeneous and heterogeneous types is of great commercial importance. Homogeneous pegmatites can seldom be mined where the products are concentrated by the hand methods now commonly used, but they have been mined in a few places where a milling process has

INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd's (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine's high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar's top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar's top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on.
