"Sampling is an important step for ore body evaluation and daily plant material balances. The Gy’s equation is regularly used to assess the size of the samples to be collected and to estimate the reproducibility of the collected samples. The equation works well for iron and base metal ores but seems to produce pessimistic estimates of the gold content reproducibility for gold ores. A model is proposed to simulate the division of samples using a standard splitter and discrepancies are observed between the Gy’s equation predictions and simulated samples reproducibility for crushed gold ore. Results of the simulation show that sampling a pile of ore crushed to -2 mm should lead to more reproducible gold content than it is observed in practice and predicted by the Gy’s equation.INTRODUCTION With current gold prices above $1400 per troy ounce operators seek for new economical ore bodies. The metallurgical evaluation of an ore body is one of the numerous steps required to justify the investment for the development of a gold mine. Metallurgical testing requires to sample the ore body and to prepare the ore sample for the grinding and separation tests. The preparation implies crushing the ore usually to less than 2mm and its division into batches of a given weight for subsequent processing. For gold ore testing a batch of crushed ore is ground in a laboratory mill and leached using cyanide. Gold recovered in the solution is used as an indicator of the ore processing amenability. One difficulty associated with ore testing is due to the reproducibility of gold content measurements of the feed sample. According to the Gy’s equation (Gy, 1979; Morisson, 2009) the division of a 20 kg batch of -2 mm ore containing 5 g/t of gold into batches of 1 kg may lead to batches containing 5 ± 5 g/t of gold. For this reason the gold content of a feed sample is usually back calculated from the assays of the solution and solids residues of the leaching process. However, these two assays may contain measurement errors that can propagate through the calculation of the gold recovery. The use of the feed assays as a redundant information could add robustness in the evaluation of ore amenability to processing. This paper discusses the problem of sampling reproducibility for a gold ore. The analysis is carried out with reference to the Gy’s equation for the sampling of particular materials."

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that utilizes gravitational force for mining massive, steeply dipping, and deep-seated ore deposits at a lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. Since caving is a dynamic process, the design of an effective ventilation system is a challenging task, and therefore, estimation of airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. The complex and dynamic nature of caving also makes it difficult to predict the airflow resistance by using traditional approaches. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

The Twin Buttes camp embraces eight mines in the Pima mining district. The first mining claims in the camp are said to have been located in 1876, but little mining was done until 1905. Intermittent operation of five of the mi.nes to 1928 yielded 388,231 tons of ore averaging 6.19 percent copper and 8 small tonnage of high-grade oxidized zinc ore. While the Bureau was investigating the area, one mine was active, and it started to produce in 1944. The mines of the Twin Buttes camp are at or near contacts of intrusive granite with Paleozoic limestones and quartzite. The ore shoots lie in metamorphosed sediments adjacent to a zone of garnet rock that separates the ore from the footwall granite. Small fissures that originate at the contact and cut the sedimentaries appear to have been controlling factors in ore deposition. No important ore bodies are exposed at the surface, and those developed wore discovered by sinking on the fissure veins to the contact zone. Most of the area overlying the favorable ore zone is covered by alluvium ranging in thickness from 5 to more than 20 feet.

A number of innovative techniques exist for solving heap leaching problems in special situations. Some of these techniques have been successfully applied and others await an opportunity for application. Discussions in this paper will deal with gold heap leaching under severe thermal conditions, in tropical rainfall circumstances, in the absence of fresh water, and in other situations removed from the ordinary. CLIMATIC CONSIDERATIONS The success or failure of precious metal dissolution operations may be strongly dependent upon proper attention to the influence of climate. A few examples are given in the following paragraphs.

"New Gold Inc.’s New Afton concentrator commenced operation in June 2012, producing a copper-gold-silver concentrate. During the first two years of operation, various optimization efforts have improved mill throughput, recoveries and concentrate grade. Daily mill throughput has increased 20% above the design rate. This was achieved through more consistent instantaneous feed rate and size distribution from the mine reclaim stockpile, higher pebble crusher reliability, changes to the SAG and ball mill grinding media sizes, larger SAG grate openings, reduced SAG discharge screen-deck aperture size and an increase in the maximum ball mill power draw limit. Metal recoveries at New Afton are primarily limited by liberation in the coarser size fractions; therefore, improving the grind size at a given mill throughput has been the main means of improving recovery. The average rougher flotation feed F80 size was reduced from 175µm in Q1 2013 to 165µm in Q1 2014, while the average operating mill throughput increased by 25%. Other flotation circuit changes focusing on recovery improvement include the addition of froth crowders to the rougher cells and the use of a stronger frother. The average concentrate grade increased from 22% Cu in Q1 2013 to 25% Cu in Q1 2014. This was achieved by redirecting the flash flotation concentrate stream to the regrind circuit and by the addition of lime to the cleaner circuit.This paper describes the above improvements made at the New Afton mill. The paper describes the objectives, timing and end result of each area of improvement.IntroductionThe New Afton Mine is situated approximately 10km west of Kamloops, British Columbia, 340km north-east of Vancouver. The mine has a moderate climate, access to transportation and electrical infrastructure, nearby fresh water supply, and close proximity to industrial and mining service businesses. The population of Kamloops is around 90,000 with most mine employees living in or around the city."

The Mesozoides of North-Eastern Asia represent a collage of exotic terranes which were accreted to the margins of the Siberian continent. In the Late Precambrian and Phanerozoic, the passive margin of the Siberian continent (the current north-east) broke up into a number of discrete fragments as a result of rifting events in the Riphean, Early and Middle Paleozoic. Rift related mineralisation includes stratiform and stratabound copper and base metal mineralisation in the structures of the Omulevka, Okhotsk and Prikolyma basement terranes, as well as along the edge of the Siberian continent in the Paleozoic sediments of the Verkhoyansk passive margin. During the Late Mesozoic the terranes were reassembled in a series of accretionary events. At the end of the Jurassic, the velocity of the Kula plate increased, and the opening of the Canadian Basin in the Arctic commenced, changing the vectors along which the Siberian and North American plates moved. Island arcs terranes were pushed back onto the Omolon super-terrane which was in turn pushed onto the Siberian Craton in a series of massive collisional events that resulted in the restructuring of the whole region. Numerous granitoids characterised by collisional and island arc chemistries with Au and accompanying Sn, and W mineralisation were emplaced. Mesothermal gold-quartz mineralisation was emplaced in a series of narrow belts that adjoin major crustal sutures and that spatially overlap belts of granitoids and zones of subgreenschist metamorphism. Each of these gold-quartz vein belts corresponds with a specific collisional phase. In the middle Cretaceous, the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt developed along the paleo-Pacific margin of the Siberian continent. Epithermal Au-Ag developed in the volcanics and shallow mesothermal Au-Ag-quartz and Au-Sb mineralisation developed in the Mesozoides. Porphyry and skarn style mineralisation developed in both the island arcs and in the continental Okhotsk-Chukotka Volcanic Belt.

"A study was conducted on the N125 project in Seattle to investigate the use of apparent density as an assessment tool for the effectiveness of soil conditioning. The formation of an air bubble as well as the plugging of cutterhead and excavation chamber can be a result of improper soil conditioning. Both air bubble formation at the top of the excavation chamber and developing plugging issues can be identified by analyzing the apparent densities in the excavation chamber. In this study, apparent densities less than unity were observed in the upper portion of both northbound and southbound TBMs, suggesting the presence of an air bubble. Apparent densities greater than the in-situ soil density were observed in the lower portion of the excavation chamber. Particularly high values of apparent density were coincident with clogging observed at multiple locations along the alignment. The combination of less than unity upper chamber apparent density and very high apparent density in the lower portion of the chamber are related, and indicate the inability of the TBM to effectively condition and mix the soil in the chamber.INTRODUCTIONProper soil conditioning in EPB tunneling offers many advantages to the quality and productivity of the project. There are few operational parameters that can be used to assess the soil conditioning performance such as advance rate, torque, thrust, chamber pressure signature, etc. One of the other parameters that potentially can be used is the apparent density. The apparent density of the material in the chamber was introduced by Guglielmetti et al. (2003) as the vertical chamber pressure gradient calculated from the physical relation between the horizontally measured chamber pressures and the vertical distance between the pressure sensors. Guglielmetti et al. (2003) introduced apparent density as a measure to ensure the excavation chamber is filled with material. To guarantee face stability the authors suggest to keep the apparent density over a certain limit so the material is able to transfer effective stress to the virgin soil, and thus provide support of the excavation face. They implemented this method at the Metro project in Porto, Portugal.Comparing the vertical gradient of the horizontal chamber pressures to the densities of excavation chamber samples, Bezuijen et al. (2005) discovered that the gradient is not necessarily representative of the muck density. They assumed that the yield stress of the muck as well as the adhesion between the muck and the cutterhead and bulkhead material have an influence on the vertical gradient during mining (Bezuijen et al. 2005, Bezuijen & Talmon 2014)."

David LeCount Evans (Consulting Petroleum and Mining Geologist, Wichita, Kans.)-—Not only E. B. Mayo but also W. C. Lacy, who apparently urged the preparation of this analysis, is to be commended. Regional thinking of this type is needed to assure future success in the never-ending search for new mineralized and petroliferous districts. As is usually the case, here is a regional study that will be read by the mining geologist alone. It is ironic that several of the trends established in this study have suggested themselves in northern mid-continent, detailed, and regional studies. These, where established, have offered new keys to petroleum exploration and have provided a possible basis for unraveling a number of broad generalities. The oil geologists, active in Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma, would find much food for thought in Mr. Mayo's projections. To be more specific: 1) The parallelism between E. B. Mayo's Texas Lineament and the Amarillo Uplift, the Wichita Complex and the Arbuckle Complex of the Texas Panhandle and Southern Oklahoma is viewed with interest and appears especially significant when compared with the similar northwest trend of the Central Kansas Uplift, a major trend of production. 2) Considering the various northeast zones of Fig. 2, and with particular reference to Mayo's C-C, the Jemez Zone is on direct line with one of several northeast-southwest controls which the present writer has been using with some success in Kansas subsurface correlations. Considering zones of shearing, with no apparent vertical displacement, but suggesting strike-slip movement, because of the staggered effect on other features which cross such trends, Mayo's philosophy presents regional possibilities for lines of weakness, considered to this time of only local significance. 3) And, finally, in an area as distant from the Southwest as central Kansas, the north-south trends of the Fiarport-Ruggles anticline, the Voshel-Hol-low Nikkel-Burrton structures, the Dayton to Stut-gart trend, the north, slightly east trend of the Ne-maha structural complex, and others all seem to approach the north-south alignments, a through f, of Mayo's Fig. 3. Mayo's employment of structural intersections to pinpoint crustal weakness, to localize igneous activity and its accompanying mineralization is not, perhaps, a new concept, but it is a 1958 model, produced by tools improved from the ever-increasing accumulation of geological observations. The use of intersecting trends in petroleum geology is not a new idea, since much production in earlier days was encountered via the straight line projections of established trends to centers of intersection. A tragedy in this age of specialization is that iron curtains have been raised between groups, all seeking raw materials, all acolytes at the altar of structural geology, but all smugly content in and protected by the ivory towers of petroleum geology, engineering geology, mining geology, and geophysics. Mayo presents basic ideas which can stimulate mid-continent structural thinking and, in the case of cen- tral Kansas. he provides a key to replace the broad and overworked simple monoclinal, sinkhole-dotted, Karst topography credo, which is not finding its share of new oil in a state where the declining discovery ratio is disconcerting. The American Association of Petroleum Geologists would do well to add E. B. Mayo to its list of Distinguished Lecturers. Evans B. Mayo (author's reply)—In reply to David LeCount Evans' comments, it is pleasing to learn that some of the elements discussed in my paper may interest petroleum geologists as well as mining geologists. This should not be surprising, however, because the lineaments make up the framework of the continent, and the oil-bearing sediments must reflect to varying degrees adjustments of basement blocks along their boundaries. A further possibility that petroleum geologists must have considered is that the slow escape of heat from buried lineaments and their intersections has aided the separation of oil from the sediments and started the migration into traps. Regarding the specific points listed by Evans, the following are suggested: 1) The branch of Texas Lineament marked 1' (Fig. 3) is thought to extend eastward through the Capitan Mts., New Mexico, through the long Tertiary dikes east of Roswell, and beyond via the Matador and Electra ranges of the Red River Uplift, Texas. Its further continuation might be the eastern flank of the Ouachita Fold Belt. The Amarillo-Wichita-Arbuckle zone of uplifts appears to continue east-southeastward the Spanish Peaks belt (3-5, Fig. 3). The northwest-trending Central Kansas Uplift would not belong to the above set, except insofar as the Central Kansas Uplift is traversed by west-northwest folds, possible continuations of the Uinta belt (5-5, Fig. 3). 2) The possible continuations into Kansas of the Jemez zone are new to me and are most welcome suggestions. 3) Most of the nearly north-south Kansan structures mentioned by Evans are unfamiliar to me, but the Nemaha Uplift itself appears to be part of a very pronounced structure traceable from the Cerralvo Fault Zone, south of the Rio Grande, through the Bend Arch, Texas, and the Nemaha Uplift, into the Pre-Cambrian of Minnesota (?). This nearly meridional zone is crossed and broken by the Rio Grande Embayment and by the Red River-Wichita Syntaxis. Petroleum geologists realize the economic importance of these features. Perhaps it is inevitable that some papers of general interest be buried in the journals of specialized groups. Moreover, papers dealing with regional, or lineament, tectonics and its applications to exploration for economic mineral deposits are as yet few in the American literature. The opportunity to advance this field is open to all those who are not ultra-conservative and who have a lively curiosity, plenty of patience, and not too many business restrictions. Rare earth element (REE)-and gold-bearing breccia pipes are a potentially significant economic target in the Pea Ridge iron ore mine, Washington County, Missouri. The Pea Ridge deposit is one of eight known volcanic-hosted iron ore deposits in the Middle Proterozoic St. Francois terrane, which are similar to the Olympic Dam-type deposits of Australia. The iron orebody is steeply dipping, tabular-shaped, and cuts across the host rhyolite. The footwall of the deposit is zoned from the massive apatite-bearing magnetite core outward to heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, specular hematite zone, to an extensive silicified zone. The hanging wall is zoned from the massive magnetite core outward to a heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, and an amphibole skarn zone. The REE-rich breccia pipes cut through the various lithologies along the footwall at or near contacts. They are typically 60 m long, 15 m wide, and extend at least 120 m vertically. The pipes are comprised of fragments of rhyolite host rock, massive magnetite zone, specular hematite zone, and silicified zone rocks supported in a matrix of rock flour, barite, feldspar, monazite, apatite, chlorite, xenotime, and, locally, gold. Total REE oxide content of samples of the ground mass material, which are not diluted with lithic fragments, average about 20 weight percent. Grades from working faces in the mine are lower and average about 12 weight percent. Gold distribution is erratic, but concentrations are as high as 371 parts per million.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue minimizar la concentración de teluro en la solución de agua madre, producto de la lixiviación de lodo anódico, mediante el proceso de cementación de teluro con cobre. En las pruebas desarrolladas en planta se alcanzó una extracción de 24% de Te, lo que hizo posible dar mayor valor agregado a los subproductos de la refinería.

The pile capacity gain with time evaluated and implemented for the construction of the Route 21 Viaduct in Newark, NJ, U.S.A is discussed in this paper. The project consisted of the replacement of more than 3.2 km of viaduct and ramps. The project site consists of thick residual materials deposited by the Wisconsin Glacier over sedimentary rocks. The upper portion is glacial-lacustrine deposit underlain by marginal morainic till and stratified drift. Subsurface investigations identified significant variations in layer thickness and grain size consistency. The site was characterized into 4 Soil types, based on subsurface soil behavior. Closed end 600 mm and 450 mm diameter driven pipe piles were used for the foundation. Loading tests conducted during an advanced construction contract, established that a significant soil set-up could be expected. For the first construction contract, a pilot loading test program consisting of 112 dynamic loading tests and 77 re-strikes (at 2 to 4 weeks) using the PDA (Pile Driving Analyzer) with CAPWAP (Case Pile Wave Analyses Program) was conducted to establish the soil set-up behavior. Nine (9) quick static loading tests were conducted to substantiate the long-term pile capacity. Based on the loading test results, average set-up factors were established and utilized for developing production pile driving criteria. Bearing resistance with depth was analyzed and reviewed. The set-up factors varied significantly, ranging from 1.05 to 1.89, and averaged about 1.30. Conclusions are derived. Set-up factors behavior for each soil type plotted by linear regression are presented and discussed. An appropriate set-up with time relationship for a glacial soil is suggested.

CUSHMAN TUNNEL No. 2 is adjacent to the Hood Canal, near potlatch, Wash. It is 17 ft. inside .diameter, about 13,000 ft., or two and one- half, miles in length, and is a part of the second unit of the Cushman power project. It connects Cushman ' Dam No. 2 and the penstocks that lead to the power house on the beach about 400 ft. vertically below the outlet of the tunnel. One shaft, 190 ft. deep, and two adits between 300 and 400 ft. long, were provided to speed up driving operations. his arrangement gave 6 working headings, which were operated 24 hr. daily. The shaft provided a manway, cageway, and skipway.

As one of its projects for degasification of major panels of coal prior to mining within them, the Bureau of Mines conducted methane emission studies during development of a set of three headings 1,800 feet in a major coal panel (2,700 by 3,500 feet) which had been completely isolated by sets of main headings for 12 months in the Federal No. 2 mine (Pittsburgh coalbed) in northern West Virginia. Similar emission studies were conducted in the development of two sets of main headings in virgin coal areas nearby. Comparing the two sets of data indicated that the isolated coal panel had been degasified by approximately 70 percent.

ABSTRACTMechanised cut and fill stoping in the Racecourse orebodies between II and 9 levels was started in 1964.Five stopes are in progress over the two level interval, extracting the full strike length (600-2,000 ft) of each orebody without transverse pillars.Each stope is served by a central 10 ft by 12 ft service intake ventilation raise and an 8 ft by 8 ft return air raise at each end of the stope. Each stope is divided into two sections for drilling. firing. mucking, and fillingto maintain steady production. All equipment is kept in the stope for one level lift stoping. Gardner-Denver 2 boom jumbos are used for uphole drilling and Wagner ST 5 Scooptrams for loading and transport to ore passes located in the footwall of the orebody. A Wagner PTIO is used for materials handling and scaling of the stope backs.Mill tailings, after one stage of cycloning are used to fill the stope, one section at a time. About 80 per cent of the water is removed by decantation while the remainder percolates through hessian-covered pipes and boxes.The ore is passed to 11 level where it is hauled by the 3 ft 6 in. gauge train to the tipple at the shaft area. The ore is crushed underground before hoisting to the surface.A performance of about 100 ton/manshift is achieved by the drilling, blasting, and mucking crews in the stopes.

Deep lead mining by methods other thanconventional open-cut techniques has not been effectively employed in Australia in -the second half of this century. The reasons for this are essentially economic, and are related particularly to the labour intensive nature of the methods involved as well as the high consumption of support materials. These methods have been adapted in recent times to undertake bulk sampling programmes in deep leads. Although some consideration is given to surface-oriented hydraulic and solution mining applications, the prime function of this paper is to investigate the possible application of modern underground methods to deep lead exploitation. As deep leads are not currently being worked (with the exception of some minor operations on the Eastern seaboard), these applications remain essentially untested. They have, however, been conceptually developed following several years of small scale deep lead development. Current mineral economics, particularly with respect to gold, combined with the known extent of partially - or totally - unexploited mineralised leads demonstrates the necessity to investigate all possible means of ore extraction.

Industry and regulatory agencies have requested guidance on safe blasting near transmission pipelines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and AMAX Coal Company have studied surface coal mine overburden blasting near four steel and one PVC pipe-line of 15 to 5l-cm diameter, monitoring vibration, strain, and pressure. Unlike tests simulating construction blasting, these were up to 1000 kg per delay in 3l-cm blastholes. Worst case comparisons showed that 12.7 cm/s blasting vibrations produced strains about 1/4 that of pressurization and 10-18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No failures occurred from blasting as close as 15 m which produced vibrations over 60 cm/s.

The microstructural relationships in dolomitic fluxed taconite pellets were studied. The influence of basicity (in the range 0.75 to 2.1) and firing temperature (to 1340°C) on the grain structure, macrostructure, and mineralogical phase relationships are described. Extensive slag bonding of hematite grains begins at temperatures between 1220 and 1230°C, and results in fundamental changes in grain structure. Successive temperature increases result in little change in grain structure until 1340°C, when extensive coalescence of the hematite grains begins.' Increasing flux additions have little effect on grain structure but greatly influence pore character. The compressive strength decreases with increasing flux addition, increases with increasing firing temperature, and is related to the macrostructure of the pellet. The compositions of the slag phases are represented on the CaO-Fe2O3-SiO2 phase diagram, and the compositional path of slag development is described.

Important recent developments in the melting and annealing of non-ferrous metals include: 1. Melting of nickel silver in the vertical ring induction furnace. 2. Electric melting of stereotype metal. 3. The rotary-drum gas-fired brass melting furnace. 4. The low-frequency coreless induction furnace. 5. Finishing annealing of brass sheets with city gas1 replacing wood in the large brass-rolling mill. 6. Electric annealing of brass and copper tubing and sheets. 7. Replacement of oil by gas and electricity in the annealing of nickel-silver shells and stampings. Melting Nickel Silver in Vertical Ring Induction Furnace Although over 90 per cent. of the output of the brass rolling mills in the United States is now melted in electric furnaces,2 until recently a considerable part of the output of nickel silver has been the product of the pit fire. The application of the electric furnace to the melting of nickel silver has been slow for several reasons: (I) Until recently no lining has been available that gave a satisfactory life in the vertical ring induction furnace when melting nickel silver; (2) the rocking arc furnace so widely used in the foundry does not appear to have been favored by the rolling mill for melting nickel silver, possibly because the gases present may affect the quality of the alloy; and (3) the exclusive rights to the use of the high-frequency coreless induction furnace (which has proved very satisfactory for melting nickel silver) for the wrought brass industry are controlled by one concern. A little over one year ago the first vertical ring induction furnace to be used for melting nickel silver in the Naugatuck Valley was placed in operation. The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver, as well as of the manganese, contained in some domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method consists of an initial leach of manganese with aqueous sulfur dioxide (S02) followed first by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach with cyanide solution for the extraction of silver. Refractory silver in these ores was either (1) intimately associated with the manganese, (2) chemically resistant to cyanide leaching, or (3) rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when minus 2.5-plus 1.3-cm ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct of the silver and 65 to 96 pet of the manganese were attained in laboratory column-leach tests using the dual leaching method on equivalent-sized ore pieces from seven domestic deposits.
