In April of 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. One of the areas excavated systematically was the furnace taphole. The aim was to obtain a refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area, together with affected hearth and sidewall refractory. Subsequently, thermodynamic modelling was applied to quantify the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area.

INFACON XI has no doubt earned the distinction as the first such Congress in India. This prestigious occasion could become a reality of a long cherished dream of the Indian Ferroalloy Producers, consumers and ex-porters. The International Committee of Ferro Alloys (ICFA), South Africa, the august body for organising INFACON, every three years, could be convinced by the Indian Ferro Alloy Producers? Association (IFAPA) to award INFACON (XI) to India. This Congresss, organized by IFAPA, has opened a window for the Ferroalloy Community of India, the up-coming Asian Tiger, to register their strength and weakness to the world forum with the principal objectives of evolving long and short-term optimum road-maps for development. It is to be reckoned that India is poised to be a steel giant by 2020 when it is envisaged that the steel production may reach a level of 120 million tons of which significant proportion has to be in the categories of alloy and special steels, requiring standard and high grade ferroalloys. Keeping the above objective in view, the theme of this Congress has been rightfully designed as ?Innovations in Ferro Alloy Industry.? This Congress has also earned a distinction of more than eighty papers, finally selected for inclusion in the Proceedings. More than 100 internationally and nationally reputed experts in the field of ferroalloys (technology and manufacturing practices as well as world scenario) have been approached for critical review of abstracts and selection for the proceedings. It needs to be mentioned without the cooperation received from ICFA the high standard of INFACON could not have been assured. The papers are suitably grouped under seventeen heads, starting from world situation to production and operation followed by present and future technologies and finally to modelling and simulation. It is a Herculean task to the Technical Committee to fit these papers in proper sequence. The Commit-tee members kept no stone unturned to ensure the cogency with the subject matters and at the same timekeeping the flexibility of interests of the participant, especially in the context of three parallel sessions. The Proceedings containing only refereed papers of high quality, will serve the entire gamut of ferroalloy industry and will also highlight the present status of concerned countries. The areas of attention to make the industries globally competitive and at the same time laying emphasis on the prevailing practices, will help the industry leaders to formulate an appropriate global approach. Following the break-through step, instilled by INFACON XI, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in searchable electronic CD-ROM format. I, as the Chairman of the Technical Committee would like to express thanks and high appreciation to all the Committee members for their whole hearted efforts in all respects without which it would not have been possible to complete these proceedings in the scheduled time. Technical Committee desires to place on record their gratitude to Organising Committee for their synergic cooperation all through in successfully executing multifarious tasks, associated with such a grand international technical Congress.

Since early days in coal mining, it has been known that some coals and the carbonaceous materials associated with them will heat and fire spontaneously. Many theories have been advanced to account for this phenomenon, but it is only within comparatively recent years that any scientific research has been carried out to determine the causes of this heating, the conditions which bring about its occurrence, and the reason why different coals heat with a varying degree of readiness. So far, this research has not cleared up these points entirely, but a great advance has been made in our knowledge of the matter. In general, any coal will fire spontaneously, although with a varying degree of readiness, provided conditions for its doing so are favourable enough. These conditions are that the coal must be in a fine state of division, that sufficient oxygen must be present for rapid oxidation, and that the air current passing must be so small that it is insufficient to carry off the heat produced by this oxidation. Many other minor factors, however, contribute to bring about spontaneous heating, either by producing initial heat themselves or by inducing the other major conditions.

A detailed analysis of faulting indicatcs that blocks of "greenstone" have been thrust beneath the southern end of the Mt. Isa orebodies.This "greenstone" basement is considered to be a major structural control in the localization of these orebodies.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on exploration carried out by Mining Corporation (Aust.) N.L. from 1956 to 1960 in the area immediately south of Mt. Isa, Queensland. During this period over 20,000 ft of diamond drilling was completed together with costeaning and geochemical exploration.Early in 1959, it became apparent that diamond drill information could not be correlated with the current geological concepts of this area and a detailed geological appraisal became necessary. In all, sixty square miles were mapped at a scale of 1 in. to 500 ft, using enlarged aerial photographs. All drill core was logged and sections re-interpreted.Professor K. C. Dunham of the University of Durham consulted on this project and contributed through valuable discussion. Dr. A. Day of the University of Sydney carried out a gravity survey in February 1960 and Dr. H. Wilshire of the same University undertook microscopic examination of rocks from the area. Certain sections of the area were investigated geochemically by Mr. K. K. Hughes of New Consolidated Gold Fields (Asia) Pty. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter’s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag’s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector’s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing and show that nearly 100% of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector’s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

THE year 1950 was one of increased activity in almost all branches of the abrasives industry, with nearly all abrasive materials showing a marked increase in tonnage and value. New records were made In the production of tripoli, ground sand and sandstone, pumice and pumicite, and garnet. Total production of crude artificial abrasives in the United States and Canada increased 17 percent in tonnage and 30 percent in value. Imports of industrial diamonds increased 100 percent in total value and 72 percent by weight, the 1950 importation being the largest since 1944. Imports of corundum increased 76 percent in tonnage and 4 percent in value.

Rock bolting or anchoring are methods of stabilization which are not being fully utilized in California and probably in other parts of the world due to lack of understanding of the principles, or due to poor results in actual installation. The problem is greater in California because so much of the rock is either soft or badly fractured and broken. Almost any recognized type of rock bolt or anchor will perform successfully is hard, fresh rock, but the problems become many-fold when working in decomposed granites, shales, soft sandstones or other soft, highly-broken rock. There has been an enormous amount of research by manufacturers, consultants, private organizations, and governmental agencies on rock bolting. It would be impossible to discuss all the methods and philosophies of rock bolting in this paper. Therefore, with the indulgence of the experts, I will give only a very generalized coverage on rock bolting techniques. However, My main purpose is to point out some of the problems of rock bolting in soft rock.

A magnesium-base incendiary alloy, containing about 20 percent cadmium, 4 percent aluminum, and 0.5 percent zinc, was investigated in a series of vacuum-distillation experiments to determine the feasibility of recovering magnesium and cadmium as refined metals. Alloys prepared in the laboratory and actual bomb-casing alloy were studied at temperatures of 550° to 750° C. and pressures of 100 to 150 microns. Simple distillation and fractional distillation methods were only partly effective in separating the cadmium and magnesium. They were separated satisfactorily, however, with a special vapor baffle designed to condense the metals selectively. Magnesium and cadmium products were 99 percent pure and together comprised 82 percent of the total condensate. About 17 percent of the condensate was intermediate-grade alloy that could be recycled with new charge and contained about 70 percent magnesium and 30 percent cadmium.

A method of establishing the relationship between the mineralogy of a sinter and its subsequent processing behaviour in a lead blast furnace is demonstrated. It involves: 1) analyzing the Zn-spinels, hardystonite, larsenite, Pb-silicates, Pb-arsenates, Pb-(Ca)-sulphates and other femtes with an electron microprobe; 2) determining the extent of elemental substitutions in various mineral structures; 3) establishing a sequence in which the various phases formed during sintering. In this manner the relationship between the bulk chemistry of a sinter formulation and the speciation of elements into various phases in the sinter can be established. Specifically, the-substitution of Mg for Zn in hardystonite significantly influences sinter production. Mg substitution releases Zn into the surrounding matrix. This Zn reacts with the Pb-silicate to form larsenite thereby reducing the amount of Pb-silicate available for anhydrite digestion. Excessive amounts of residual anhydrite thus result if the sinter formulation is based solely on the CaO/Si& ratio.

BRAZIL has had an industry based on ocean beach deposits of heavy minerals containing monazite, zircon, rutile, and ilmenite for well over 40 years, but except at the very earliest period, prior to 1906, and again during World War 11, has this industry been at all comparable in size with similar operations in other countries. Limiting factors have been neither a lack of reserves nor lack of markets (except for zircon). Although poor local transportation and shipping facilities have handicapped the development in Brazil, these conditions were perhaps equally bad (when mining operations started) in the Indian State of Travancore, and in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, in which states the principal production of beach deposits of heavy minerals has occurred. The outstanding restraints on the Brazilian industry have been the lower quality of the Brazilian minerals, the relative small size of individual deposits that were known until recently, the lack of interest of Brazilian investors in mining ventures, and the unfavorable climate for investment of foreign capital under Brazilian mining law. The lower quality of the minerals is indicated by the fact that the Brazilian monazite carries only 5 to 6 pct Tho2*, and the ilmenite 561/2 pct TiO2, whereas the corresponding Travancore minerals carry 9 pct Tho, and 60 pct TiO, respectively. The Brazilian zircon is a dirty brown color (which can be removed readily) as compared with the gleaming whiteness of the Australian zircon. An inadequate market for the abundant zircon that will be available in any operation in Brazil is certainly a heavy restraint, since otherwise it could be an important byproduct. The oxide of zirconia, baddeleyite, that has come from Brazil is from other sources.' Since the Brazilian beach sands carry only a little rutile, that mineral has not been available as a valuable byproduct to help finance the operations. Substantial tonnages of rutile have been exported from Brazil. The sources of this mineral are stream placers and residual deposits over gneisses in the States of Goyaz, Minas Geraes, Ceara, etc. (Leonardos,' and Chambers". With these handicaps, Brazilian production from beach sands has been marginal, and there has been only one consistent producer. This is a company, originally French, which was called Companie de Franco-BrazilliCne, but, with the downfall of France in 1940, became Brazilian under the name Monazita e Ilmenita do Brasil ("Mibra"). This company has operated several deposits in the vicinity of Guara-pary, in the State of Espirito Santo. Its office and plant has been at Guarapary. Recently a company called, "Fomil" (Fomento Monazita-Ilmenita) started operations. This company was organized by the Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia, and such share as a foreign company can hold under Brazilian law has now been acquired by the Lindsay Light and Chemical Co. of Chicago. When the writer went to Brazil in the fall of 1940, he found that no general survey of the beaches had been made except for a thorough study of part of the area by Abreu.4 The paper by Miranda6 had not then been written. The federal Geological Survey and Department of Mines knew only of the existence of the deposits in Espirito Santo south of Vitoria, and had a hazy idea that others might be found north of Vitoria. INTRODUCTION This paper summarizes the result of a two and a half year research program. The objective of the research was to develop a fundamental understanding of the Rib-in-Roc method. Through the development of a new model technology, namely three-dimensional physical models which powerfully exploit the results of dimensional analysis Stillborg, Stephansson and Swan (1), it has been possible to establish the contribution to both permanent and immediate stabilization of a large underground opening pre-reinforced by the Rib-in-Roc method. Using the results from these physical models and earlier work by Stillborg and Stephansson (2) and Åkesson (3), a conceptual synthesis is given in this paper so demonstrating the Rib-in-Roc method to be a practical working system of pre-reinforcement. DESCRIPTION OF THE RIB-IN-ROC METHOD To give the reader an idea of how this method of pre-reinforcement is performed, a short description will be given, Figure 1. Before any full-scale excavation takes place an entry is made in the host rock and rib raises are driven around the proposed opening. These raises are made at a spacing that is dependent upon rock quality; an opening in poor rock needs more ribs per length of opening. As the ribs are driven they are used as a site from which very competent rock bolting can be done. As a rib is excavated it is filled with reinforced concrete. Finally after having in this way reinforced the zone around the proposed opening, (a reinforced arch is formed) the displacements are automatically controlled as the opening is being excavated. Using this method openings with a span of 50-60 meters (160-200 ft) and a height of 60-80 meters (200-260 ft) are likely to be realised.

Deepening of harbours has become a priority, necessary to the ongoing operation of the wharves in the face of deeper draft merchant vessels and cruise ships. It is now standard practice in many areas to provide for harbours to be dredged to significant depths below mean sea level, in the order of 12.00 m (39 ft) for existing berths and 15.00 m (49 ft) for new wharf construction. The Ravenna Port Authority initiated a project to deepen the harbour bottom at selected wharves to a depth of 12.00 m (39 ft). In preference to reconstruction of the wharves with longer and heavier sheet piling or other equally disruptive reconstruction, they identified the structural reinforcement of the existing wharves by means of deep underwater tie rods as a possible alternative cost-effective solution. Having defined the design concept, effort was concentrated on developing the required technology. A technique, already in use for the installation of tie rods by means of robotics, was identified as potentially suitable for underwater use. It was decided to carry out the fine tuning and the evolution of the technology for a marine environment of the robot unit and of the related remote control software that controls the installation of the tie rods. An experimental test site was set up to refine the drilling, installation, grouting, monitoring and testing of underwater tie rods. The purpose was to confirm the feasibility of the proposed solution and the reliability of these tie rods for use in the reinforcement and construction of wharves. The paper also discusses the theoretical and experimental study of underwater tie rods dealing with the theoretical analysis of the interaction between tie rod and soil, aimed at identifying the correlation between the forces of applied traction and the corresponding measured elongations. A series of tests were carried out with positive results, both at the operating load of 300 kN (67 kips) and at the nominal maximum load of 630 kN (142 kips). The tests were carried out on seven tie rods, of which three were installed at a depth of 5.00 m (16 ft), principally to test the reliability of the operating and remote control systems in the presence of a significant hydrostatic pressure, and four were placed at a depth of 8.00 m (26 ft) to check the load bearing capability of the tie rods positioned at the depth called for by the current project.

"In longwall mines, atmospheric or barometric pressure fluctuations can disturb the pressure balance between the gob and the ventilated working area of the mine, resulting in a phenomenon known as “gob breathing”. Gob breathing triggers a gas flow across the gob and the working areas and may result in a condition where a methane accumulation in the gob flows into the face area forming an explosive mixtures. This paper discusses results of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling carried out to analyze this phenomenon and its impact on the explosive mixture development under a bleeder-ventilated longwall gob panel scheme. Modeling results indicate that the gas inflow and outflow across the gob and the formation of Explosive Gas Zones (EGZs) are directly affected by the barometric pressure changes. Methane gas and EGZs in the gob expand out toward the face and bleeder entries during the falling barometric pressure. Where methane zones interface with mine air, EGZ fringes may form along the face and in the bleeder entries. When the atmospheric pressure increases, an ingression of oxygen into the gob is observed that can also increase EGZs in volume. The findings from this study help assess the methane ignition and explosion risks associated with fluctuating atmospheric pressures. INTRODUCTION Methane explosions continue to be a daunting risk for underground coal miners, although the number of related fatalities and injuries in the U.S. coal mining industry has steadily decreased since the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910. Still, the consequences of a methane explosion are often disastrous with multiple fatalities and property damage often leading to permanent shutdown of the mine. Methane is formed during the coalification process and is released from the coal seam to the mine atmosphere when the coalbed is disturbed by mining or natural causes such as earthquakes. If not properly diluted by appropriate mine ventilation, this methane may accumulate in the active mine workings and gob areas. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have developed numerical models showing how and where explosive methane may accumulate in gob areas. Historical mine explosions appear to show a connection between mine explosions and fluctuating barometric pressure as a result of stormy weather. McIntosh (1957), Boyer (1964), and Kissell et al. (1973) studied the influence of barometric drops on major coal mine disasters in the United States prior to 1970. Their statistical analyses found that a majority of these disasters occurred in the fall and winter months when the barometric pressures were influenced by unstable weather conditions and noted increased methane content in the mine workings during times of falling pressure. Studies conducted by Fauconnier (1992) and Hemp (1994) found similar connections between methane explosions and barometric pressure fluctuations in a majority of gas explosions in South African mines. Ten out of twelve major mine explosions with five or more fatalities in the U.S. after 1970 were found to have occurred during the months of November through April when barometric pressure swings were more abrupt and intense (Lolon et al., 2015)."

Bureau of Mines in 1930 and 1931 made a study of the properties and characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) at the request of one of the largest users, in order to determine and eliminate the hazards attending its use.This report deals with the examination of absorbents for L.O.X. to (1) determine their most desirable and most undesirable characteristics, (2) to find ways and means of desensitizing absorbents to mechanical shock, and (3) to determine the effect that such desensitization of absorbents has on the explosive Characteristics of L.O.X.ABSORBENT MATERIALS The absorbent used in driving the Simplon Tunnel, the earliest project in which L.O.X. was used, was composed of crude petroleum, soot, and kieselguhr. During the World War, powdered cork, soot, sawdust, powdered straw, or other similar powdered materials were mentioned in the German military instructions for use of ""liquid air"" explosives. "Blast vibrations are essentially a strain/stress wave propagating in rock or structures inthe vicinity of a blast. However, blast vibration has always been quantified in terms ofpeak particle velocity (PPV) or acceleration (PPA), and a meaningful relationshipbetween blast vibration and strain/stress has not been established. The determination ofthe dynamic strain from blast vibration may improve quantification of blast damage andselection of a blast vibration limit for critical structures or high walls. Dynamic strainrelates to rock mechanics or material strength more directly than peak particle velocity(PPV). This paper documents a method to calculate the three-dimensional dynamic straintensor from recorded blast vibration signals. The method is based on determination of thedisplacement gradient at a point of interest for each time instance during the vibrationduration. The method to calculate dynamic strain is applicable to generic seismicwaveforms including near and far field blast vibration from a production blast withmultiple blast holes.
