As a result of a changing market pattern for anthracite, there is now an increasing demand for steam size and a decreasing demand for domestic sizes. To help the producer meet this new demand, the authors present the technical aspects of the problem of crushing domestic sizes to steam fineness and size. The market pattern for anthracite coal has changed considerably in recent years. The demand for domestic sizes has been gradually decreasing and the demand for the steam sizes has been increasing. The companies however aim for a maximum production of domestic sizes, since these sizes command premium prices. To meet the market demands, particularly in certain periods of the year, further size reduction of the coarse clean coal is necessary. The present practice of multistage crushing in toothed rolls leads to complicated flow arrangements and is high in cost. Data presented herein indicate that crushers with high reduction ratios could be used with a resulting simplification of crushing flows and an appreciable reduction of capital and operating costs. The different types of crushing equipment investigated included the rotary-type breaker, the jaw crusher, the impactor-type crusher, and the Aerofall mill. CURRENT PRACTICE The standard sizes of anthracite are presented in Table I and market specifications require that any given size be maintained with only a limited amount of oversize and undersize material. The 1958 prices of the various sizes also are presented, so it may be seen that size reduction is only performed when dictated by market demands. At the present time the general practice of crushing anthracite consists of removing the top size and crushing it in a toothed double roll crusher to the next largest size. Consequently, to reduce the domestic egg, stove, and nut sizes to steam sizes of pea, buck, rice, and barley, the original material must be screened to produce the three top sizes and each size must be crushed in three separate rolls to the next largest size. Each crushed product must then be rescreened to remove the oversize for re crush ing. Thus a typical operation would consist of scalping the egg size from a mixture, crushing it to stove size, and rescreening the product. This same cycle would be repeated for the stove and nut sizes requiring three screens and three crushers as well as conveying equipment to handle the crushed products. This results in an expensive series of operations to make a product which sells for a lower price. If the three top sizes are crushed in one operation to the smaller sizes then the yield of steam sizes is low and the production of Nos. 4 and 5 sizes is large. These sizes sell for lower prices than the steam sizes. A typical operation is presented in Fig. 1. From the figure it may be seen that the original cleaned anthracite contains 67.4 pet domestic sizes, 26.4 pct steam sizes, and 6.2 pct fines. After multistage crushing of the domestic to steam sizes the composition of the product is 0.6 pct domestic sizes, 89.6 pct steam sizes, and 9.8 pct fines. A surface of a magnesium slab (hereinafter, referred to as Mg slab) or magnesium alloy slab (hereinafter, referred to as Mg alloy slab) becomes black with the use of conventional manufacturing methods. The methods also involve a danger that an explosion of the molten magnesium occurs through contact with cooling water. Thus, it has been impossible to produce a slab having a smooth surface. In the present method, a molten magnesium alloy is supplied into a mold, which is sheltered from the surroundings, from a pool in tundish, which is shielded from the surroundings. AZ31B slab formed in the mold is drawn horizontally out to the outside from an outlet of the mold by revolving of the pinch rolls. A cooling water is jetted at an acute angle onto the slab on the outer side of the mold outlet. Further, an inert gas is sprayed at the inner side of the mold outlet in order to seal in a gap between a free surface of the molten magnesium alloy and a sheltered board surrounding an upper surface of the mold. As a result, oxygen and droplets of the cooling water are prevented from running back to the mold side through the gap. AZ31B slab has a smooth surface condition and high quality without a gas porosity, a segregation or the like. Further, the slab has a size of a width of 100 to 120 mm, a thickness of 5 to 20 mm and a span of 10 m or more.

A drilled displacement pile program was utilized for the expansion of an existing power plant in Cohasset MN adjacent to the Mississippi River. The drilled displacement (DD) pile is an innovative foundation type that provides exceptional value in some geologies. In the U.S., DD piles have typically been used in coarse-grained soils due to the large friction capacities that can be generated by the piles in these conditions. This project was the first large scale experience for the project team where it was anticipated that significant portions of the DD pile capacity would be developed in primarily fine-grained soils. The project site consisted primarily of variable amounts of fill overlying predominantly low plasticity alluvial silts. In some cases, alluvial silty sand layers were encountered within the expected pile installation depths. Alluvial sands were typically encountered below the silts, in some cases within the expected pile installation depths. The project team developed a probe and pile load test program to address the variable subsurface conditions across the site. The program included monitoring various parameters (including applied torque and tool penetration rate) during the drilling portion of the pile installation using recently developed data acquisition techniques. This data was used to estimate the rig energy, or Installation Effort (IE), required for pile installation. IE profiles from the test and indicator piles were compared with subsurface data available from a number of previous site characterizations. Additionally, Cumulative IE values were compared to an in-house database of IE vs. DD Pile Capacity. Final production pile toe levels were based primarily on IE values selected from this comparison. The IE data collected during production was also used to address large variations in pile-cutoff elevation (relative to a fairly uniform ground surface elevation).

"Abstract - Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres .The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 1950s and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. ln recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors.There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."

Reduce shaft sinking costs and workers exposure to mechanical hazards, drill dust, blast dangers, and fumes. Approach Replace drilling and blasting by using a large, cab-mounted impact breaker suspended from the bottom work deck of the galloway. How It Works The pneumatically actuated impact breaker is positioned by an articulated boom con-trolled from an operators cab. The breaker delivers 2,000 ft-lb blows that fragment the rock at the shaft bottom. Mucking is accomplished by a backhoe bucket on an articulated boom mounted on the cab. See photograph. The mucked material can be removed either by dumping into a previously drilled borehole or by being lifted out in a muck bucket as shown in the drawing. Positioning of the breaker, rotating the cab around its vertical axis, and moving the cab support frame around the perimeter of the shaft are all controlled by one joystick. Separate controls position the mucker boom, which can be swung horizontally through a 180° degree arc towards either side of the cab. Because the cab can be rotated to any position around its vertical axis, and can also be moved in a horizontal circle around the shaft, virtually any position on the bottom of the shaft can be reached by the breaker and mucker.

Methods of chemical analysis of clays for the following constituents are presented: moisture, ignition loss Fe2O3, TiO2, P2O5, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, total. carbon, carbonate carbon total sulfur, soluble salts, and soluble sulfate. In these procedures the attainment of accuracy has been the primary consideration sample was taken to insure accuracy, with ordinary precautions. The procedures may therefore be somewhat somewhat and will not be suited for routine work on samples for which the approximate analysis is already known and in which the need for accuracy is not very exacting. However, the method shod be as a set of detailed directions, that have been tested and shown to yield accurate results with clays and other aluminum silicate minerals. Among these minerals are clays of all types, bentonite bauxite, shale, brick; soil, calcined refractory, and sand. Although some of the methods are Unusual, no particular claim is laid to originality. The material was drawn frail many sources, put together and tested.

The ability to understand stress redistribution within a mine allows greater extraction efficiency with reduced safety concerns. Stress redistribution has been examined at the laboratory scale using ultrasonic tomography and numerical modeling using PFC3D. A data acquisition system was built to obtain tomograms as samples are loaded in uniaxial compression. Limestone samples were loaded to failure. Three-dimensional tomograms of the samples correlate to various stress distributions. The tomograms are compared to analytical and PFC3D results.

"Gravity concentrators are evaluated either in closed or open circuit. The process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (/98Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator's product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. In addition to allowing for a more accurate and detailed recovery analysis, this process significantly reduces the time and cost required for unit evaluation when compared to other gold recovery analysis procedures. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems.IntroductionThe surge in gold prices of the late 1970s and early 1980s was followed closely by a renewed interest in gravity concentration processes, especially in concentrators claiming efficient recovery of fine placer gold. Cones, spirals, spinning bowls, jigs and cyclones are all considered potential fine gold concentrators. Fine gold, in this context, is defined as not only that gold finer than 250 um (60 mesh""), but also coarser gold, whose low shape factor may decrease its recovery by conventional, large-scale sluicing operations.Adoption of fine gold concentrators by the Alaskan placer milling industry was retarded by the lack of reliable, accurate, and reproducible data on concentrator efficiency with respect to fine placer gold recovery. In most cases, concentrator performance was based on a limited number of tests run on placer material, about which only slight knowledge of gold size and shape characteristics existed. In order to be prepared for the resurgence of interest in fine gold concentrators, which will follow the next upturn in gold prices, a detailed study of the fine gold recovery characteristics of gravity concentrators needs to be conducted."

The selection of the mode of transport for moving bulk materials is never a simple task as there are various concerns/considerations applied to the selection of the most practical and cost-effective mode of transport to be used to move bulk materials. This paper examines various alternatives for moving ore from a mine at the top of a mountain to a process plant below (some 5000 m apart and a vertical drop of 650 m). The terrain of the mountain section of the route has added its own specific requirements, resulting in the final selection of a pipe conveyor for this application. The paper further addresses the final selection of hardware used in the implementation of the solution.

This paper presents the physical modelling results of subsurface fracture development associated with Iongwall mining operations and an application of image processing techniques to interpretion of the results. Physical modelling results haióbeen obtained by employing a large sand and plaster model loaded purely by gravity as a means of fracturing the subsurface strata above the longwall excavation. The results have shown fracture development and crack propagation as a longwall face advances and demonstrated that the strength of stratified rocks, the presence and position of a weak band-, and the extraction thickness, have significant effects upon the overall fracture patterns above the excavation. Binary images of fracture patterns were scanned from the black and white photographs of the tested models using an image analyser coupled to a video camels. These images were manipulated by a custom written C program which allows the images to be processed in both vertical and horizontal direction. The images were filtered to quantitatively differentiate between vertical and horizontal fracture intensities. The vertical fracture intensity is particularly important as vertical fractures are considered to provide the main avenues for surface and subsurface water inflow into the excavation. The use of the image analysis techniques has shown a promising improvement in image enhancement and in model results interpretation in a quantitative manner. The numerical nature of the image analysis results will allow further statistical comparison with other modelling techniques to be undertaken and significantly increase the scope for use of the modelling technique results.

INTRODUCTION THE Western Canada sedimentary basin has one feature in common with the Precambrian Shield area: it also was a great chemical laboratory. The mining industry of Canada exploits the end products of chemical experiments that occurred on the Shield during periods of repeated disturbances in Precambrian times. The petroleum industry on the other band exploits what also appears to be the final results of chemical experiments that took place throughout all of post-Precambrian up to Tertiary times. Since the subject of this paper is a factual study of Alberta well waters, no attempt is made to answer significant questions pertaining to the probable role waters play in the generation of oil, or to the significance of the effects of structure and depth on waters. Data from several hundred well-water analyses were compiled by the writer in a series of charts and diagrams, of which those included in this paper are representative. Early studies indicated the possibility that outstanding anomalies in general concentration of waters and in greatly increased concentration of elements such as calcium, magnesium, bromine, and iodine for example, might be expected from wells that produced oil or were in the immediate vicinity of producers. The water analyses from wells which? were drilled at a later date did not confirm this possibility, and it is suggested that, aside from their initial value to the petroleum engineer or to. those interested in the commercial possibilities of brines, no definite significance as an aid in oil discovery can be attributed to water analyses.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory \matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol %is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.L) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramms metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, n, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and there. fore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .' . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. Copper sulfate pentahydrate is recovered from the spent etchant waste stream of a printed circuit board manufacturing facility by cooling crystallization. The fluidized bed crystallizer contains submerged cooling surfaces which are bathed in a stream of air. The air bubbles provide agitation which improve heat transfer, reduce fouling and maintain crystals in suspension. The recently patented apparatus (US 5,523,064) has advantages when compared to a conventional surface cooled crystallizer including capital cost, ease of operation and production of larger more uniform crystals

LaModel is a boundary-element program capable of calculating the displacements and stresses in thin bedded deposits such as coal, salt, or potash. Throughout its history, it has continually been upgraded in order to expand analysis detail and stay current with the latest advances in computer technology. The most recent enhancements include: an increased grid size capability, a significant increase in the speed of the automatic grid generation using an AutoCAD visual interface, implementation of subsidence-based horizontal strain calculations for multiple-seam situations, and pillar safety factor calculations. To demonstrate these new features, a multiple-seam case study of a longwall panel undermining an active set of main entries is presented.

"This paper compares the behaviour of gold and ore in the grinding circuit of Hemlo Gold Ltd. Particular attention is given to grinding kinetics, classification behaviour, and liberation. For grinding kinetics, laboratory grinding of gold flakes and silica, 840-1200 um in size (14/20 mesh), was also performed to provide a standard for comparison and to study in a controlled environment the mechanisms of breakage, folding, smearing and impacting.Grinding kinetics were characterized at laboratory scale with breakage and selection functions. The breakage function showed that 75% of gold disappearing from the 840-1200 um class reported to the 600-840 um; this figure is much higher than for silica ( 46%) or most other minerals, and implies that comparatively fewer fine fragments are produced from the breakage of gold flakes, on account of gold's malleability. The selection function of silica was four times that of gold. At plant scale, the ratio of the selection function of ore and gold increased from 6 for at 50-100 um to 20 at 500-1000 um.Observation of original flakes and their fragments with the scanning electron microscope showed that the main mechanism of ""grinding"" from the 840-1200 um to the 600-840 um class was folding rather than actual breakage. This was confirmed by a measure of individual flake weight. The postulated breakage cycle is that relatively globular flakes become increasingly serrated through grinding; they can then regain their original shape through folding and reflattening into cylindrical and spherical shapes, as the majority does; however, some fragments will at this point undergo actual breakage. Photographic evidence is presented to support the proposed mechanisms.Smearing of gold unto silica was observed when silica was ground after a gold, and embedding of silica into gold flakes when gold was ground after a silica. Both mechanisms occur whenever gold and harder minerals are jointly ground, and result in ""unliberation"" of gold. It is postulated that smearing of gold onto other minerals plays an important role in explaining how gravity recovery can increase overall gold metallurgy, especially when used ahead of flotation.Classification of gold in the primary hydrocyclones takes place at a much finer cut-size than ore, 20 vs. 57 um. This and the slower grinding kinetics result in high gold circulating loads in the primary loop, 6700%, and a gold content in the primary cyclone underflow (PCUF) is twenty four times that of the ore. The gold size distribution for primary cyclone overflow is much finer than that of the ore, although they are essentially similar in the PCUF.Liberation, or more accurately ""gravity recoverability"", was assessed with a 7.5 cm (3"") Knelson concentrator. It varied between the thirties for the primary mill discharge and two cyclone overflows, to highs of 89 to 92% for the PCUF and secondary mill discharge, 89 and 92%, respectfully."

The iron ore beneficiation plant at Serra-Azul Mines of ArcelorMittal, Brazil operates at a rated capacity of 3.2 million tons per year. The ore is concentrated using magnetic separation, jigging, hydrocyclones and spiral concentrators. The tailings from the process plant are generated from classifier overflow of 135 tons per hour dry solids and thickener underflow of 48 tons per hour dry solids. A systematic experimental program was carried out using Multi-gravity separator (MGS), and wet high-intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS) for recovering the iron values from both of the tailing streams while minimizing the total quantity of tailings to be discarded. The classifier overflow contained 32.3 percent iron, 49.9 percent silica and 2.18 percent alumina and was 45 percent finer than 45 microns in size. The thickener underflow sample contained 47.3 percent iron, 27.6 percent silica and 2.49 percent alumina and was 16 percent finer than 45 microns in size. Separation results on the classifier overflow sample with the MGS indicated that a concentrate containing 62.1 percent of iron, 10.8 percent silica and 0.36 percent alumina can be achieved with a weight recovery of 24.5 percent. The results with WHIMS at 6500 Gauss indicated that concentrate containing 62.6 percent iron, 8.3 percent silica, and 0.65 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 34.7 percent. 4.7 percent. WHIMS studies at 6500 Gauss on thickener underflow sample indicated that a concentrate containing 61.4 percent iron, 8.8 percent silica, and 1.74 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 57.2 percent. Based on these results, and further in-house test works, a WHIMS installation was adopted for the recovery of iron values from the tailings in the operating plant at ArcelorMittal Serra Azul Mines, Brazil.

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. In the past five years Cuba has been attempting to more than double its nickel production by constructing two new ammonia leaching plants. No metals are yet produced on commercial scale but a variety of oxides and sulfides. This report updates the Cuban nickel industry as a result of two visits : one at the invitation of the Cuban Ministry of Basic Industries in 1987 and the other as a consultant to the United Nations for the Cuban Laterite Project in 1989.
