For the moment reserves of high-grade ores are practically depleted requiring ever-increased involvement of low assay raw materials, such as black-shale ores, in industrial operations. Black-shale ores are constituted of minerals containing such valuable components as vanadium, uranium, molybdenum, manganese, and rare-earth elements (REE). We studied technogenic solutions of black-shale ores processing, after uranium, molybdenum, and vanadium were recovered. Mentioned solutions contain rare-earth elements in substantial quantities (S REE 70-100 mg/dm3) that is very important factor taking into consideration the world demand ever-increasing last years. Higher concentrations of iron and aluminum inhibiting REE sorption and extraction recovery are found in solutions. We propose a method of hydrolytic deposition to cleaning solutions from impurity elements (Fe, Al). Study of hydrolytic deposition kinetics allowed identifying optimal conditions to run this process. Rare-earth elements may be recovered from purified solutions through sorption process followed by their further deposition from eluates in form of concentrates. A grade separation was required to allow uninterrupted traffic crossing for a busy rail spur and a county road. The grade separation was achieved by creating a 30-foot (9-meter) high embankment that incorporates two multiplate tunnels and allows the passage of a rail spur and an existing county road. The site is located in an abandoned meander channel in the floodplain of the Mississippi River, near Osceola, Arkansas, and is underlain by more than 40 feet (12 meters) of soft clay and interlayered clays, sands and silts. Without soil improvement, the post-construction settlement would exceed 3 feet, slowly crushing the proposed tunnel structure and cutting off the railroad. Preloading, combined with vertical drains, was used to accelerate the consolidation of the underlying soil layers and to reduce the post-construction settlement under working loads. Six settlement plates were installed to monitor the progress of consolidation under surcharge load. The Asaoka observational method and the hyperbolic fitting method were used to analyze the measured settlement data to predict the end of primary settlement. The in-situ consolidation coefficient, ch, was back calculated from the measured settlement data. The stress release caused by the removal of the preloading surcharge load and the tunnel installation was determined using a Plaxis 3-D finite element model. The measured and predicted settlement using Hansbo's analytical solution demonstrated reasonable agreement. Early removal of the surcharge and construction of the tunnel prior to reaching the end of primary settlement was accomplished by analyzing the post-excavation stress reduction achieved via tunnel construction.

Abstract-Gahnite, a zinc-bearing spinel, is a resistate mineral that may be used as an indicator mineral of polymetallic deposits in high-grade metamorphic terrain. The Ontario Geological Survey recently completed surficial mapping and sampling programs in the Separation Lake area of northwestern Ontario and Kinniwabi Lake area of northeastern Ontario in which gahnite was recovered from samples of surficial sediments. Ternary plots of the composition (ZnO, MgO, FeO[t]) of gahnite recovered from these surficial studies reveal three distinct groups: Group 1 is characterized by low (< 1 wt%) MgO values; Group 2 by higher (>1 wt%) MgO values; and Group 3 by higher FeO(t) values than Groups 1 and 2. The composition of in situ gahnite recovered from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization, Zn-rich Sedex-type mineralization and peraluminous rare-element mineralized granite and pegmatite also was determined. The composition of the gahnite obtained from surficial samples was compared with that of in situ material. Gahnite from the peraluminous rareelement granite and pegmatite overlapped very well with surficial gahnite of Group 1. Gahnite from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization and Sedex-type mineralization overlapped well with surficial gahnite of Group 2. These results suggest that determination of gahnite composition in indicator mineral surveys may be useful in exploration programs when assessing the mineral potential of a region.

Post-mining landscapes are required to geomorphologically and ecologically integrate with their surrounds (Mart&#237;n Duque et al., 2015). Designing and constructing an erosionally stable landform is the first and arguably most important part of the rehabilitation process. Without an erosionally stable landform topsoil and nutrients are lost, shallow groundwater is depleted as well as when excessive erosion occurs, expose suboptimal materials. Here we examine the ideas of geomorphic design and rehabilitation and how the landform can be tested and enhanced using computer based design and landscape evolution models. Specifically we evaluate the complementary capabilities of landscape modelling (SIBERIA) (Hancock and Willgoose, 2017) and geomorphic design software (Natural Regrade with GeoFluv) (Bugosh et al., 2016), in order to maximise erosional stability on post-mining landscapes (Zapico et al., 2018). (e) Copper-cobalt-silicon and its pseudo-binary section Cu-Co2Si (formula of compound established with some probability but not as definitely as for Ni2Si). (f) Copper-chromium-silicon; formation of a compound definitely established (compare Figs. 1 and 2). The formula of this compound may be either Cr2Si or Cr3Si. (g) Copper-iron-silicon; presence of a phase containing both iron and silicon established in an indirect way only. No definite microconstituents observed. 2. Tunnels and underground projects are inherently more risky than vertical projects, which typically utilize more conventional design and construction approaches and are undertaken in the context of relatively ascertained and defined conditions. On tunnel and under-ground projects, there are a host of special risk factors, including unknowns and uncertainties as to the physical and behavioral characteristics of the ground, the inextricable interdependence and necessary interaction of design decisions and construction means and methods with those ground conditions as well as the manner in which risks are allocated among project participants for un-anticipated subsurface conditions. Public-private partnerships (PPP) projects, in their own respects (and independent of any major subsurface component), pose significant risk for all private sector participants. The main driver of owners to procure projects using PPP is financial, as often all, or substantially all, of the design and construction risk are transferred to the private sector consortium, including the design-build (D-B) team. For a concerning number of those public owners, that risk transfer regime includes rather onerous and aggressive contractual terms that allocate to the private sector participants substantially all risks associated with the encountering of unanticipated subsurface conditions. These aggressive risk allocation provisions, while directly impacting project participants upstream of the consulting engineer, have an indirect and corresponding risk intensifying effect upon consulting engineer professional liability exposure. There are many factors that result in increased professional liability exposure for consulting engineers involved in PPP projects. The more prominent and prevalent of those factors fall into the following categories:

IT has been said the British Empire was built on British Coal. In all the postwar planning for Great Britain the necessity for producing cheap coal and the prosperity of the coal industry are given first consideration. On Jan. 23, 1945, there was released in London a "Report to the Colliery Owners" which had been awaited with great interest. This was entitled "A Plan for Coal" and was the recommendation of Robert Foot, chairman of The Mining Association (Colliery Owners), prepared at their request. Presentation of the "Plan" at this time is particularly significant as it is an answer to the demand for nationalization of the coal industry by the Labour Party and at the same time is a carefully considered program for postwar reconstruction, prosperity, and stability. In the words of Mr. Foot, If the coal industry for the first ten years after this war is to find itself in a situation similar to the one it occupied for the ten years following the last war, with its record of disputes, strikes, stoppages, short-time working, unemployment, and, with it all, a completely insufficient margin of profit, and all the insecurity and instability in our basic industry that was brought with them, it is goodbye to any real prospect of full employment, social security, and high standard of living. It is well known that the anticipated mineral price at the start of a prospective mineral project can have an overwhelming effect on a property&apos;s ex ante value. However, possible price movements throughout the life of a project can also have an impact on this value. This paper demonstrates how different potential price paths can affect project value. When considering commodity price projections for mine valuations, it is thus necessary to estimate not only the expected commodity price at the start of the project, but also the manner in which that price is likely to fluctuate throughout the project&apos;s life.

The Bureau of Mines determined the costs associated with lithium production (in various products) from demonstrated resources in seven market economy countries (MEC&apos;s). This analysis evaluated the relative economic and resource position of 16 mines or deposits, including 6 producers and 1 (Bernic Lake) operating at pilot scale. The demonstrated resource of recoverable lithium within the deposits studied is approximately 2.2 million metric tons (mt). Virtually all known MEC resources and production were covered, including resources in Chile (59 pct of the total), the United States (13 pct), Australia (11 pct), Canada (10 pct), and Bolivia, Zaire, and Zimbabwe (combined 7 pct). In addition, the large potential of lithium-enriched brines is assessed, especially those in the Atacama Basin, Chile, where production began in 1984. The lithium resource consists of lithium in spodumene, brines, and to a small extent lepidolite and petalite. Most MEC lithium trade originates from the United States, though development of brine deposits in Chile, and potential development in Bolivia, could threaten the U.S. position. Economic analysis indicated that all lithium being recovered from producing properties could be produced at less than the published market price, and that MEC resources from these properties are adequate to supply any foreseeable demand.

"This work has as its objective to characterize an ash waste and to evaluate its incorporation into a clay to produce bricks and roofing tiles. The waste is a type of fly-ash resulting from the incineration of a selected part of urban garbage, which is basically constituted of organic matter and plastics. The waste was submitted to mineralogical and chemical characterization. Compositions were prepared with incorporation of the waste in amounts of up to 20wt.% into athe clay. Rectangular specimens were prepared by extrusion and fired in a laboratory furnace at 900°C. The physical and mechanical properties evaluated were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that the waste is predominantly composed of quartz and calcium compounds. The incorporation of the ash was deleterious to the evaluated properties of the clay. It is suggested that the incorporation should be made in amounts below 5wt. % to avoid deleterious effect in the mechanical strength and water absorption of the clayey ceramic.IntroductionThe world attention has turned to a subject of great concern today, the production and disposal of large amounts of industrial wastes as well as wastes of various sources. When deposed in an unsuitable place, these wastes can cause considerable harm to human health and to the environment. Our planet suffers with air pollution, groundwater and soil contamination as well as silting of rivers and lakes with the growing amounts of our society wastes.The recycling of waste materials is of great interest to the industries, mainly due to the environmental agencies legislation. One of the practices for correct disposal of these wastes being investigated is to incorporate into red ceramics, such as bricks and roofing tiles. The natural variability of the characteristics of the clays associated with the relatively simple processing techniques and also the low performance required for the products allow the presence of relatively high levels of impurities in clayey ceramics."

"Recent developments in image analysis techniques and the power of computer hardware have spurred international interest in the potential uses of image analysis techniques in a range of industrial applications. One of these applications is the control of the complex flotation process. Despite years of work, the flotation process is still poorly understood. Current attempts to control flotation cells focus on consistently duplicating the control achieved by human operators.In human control of flotation two of the dominant visual cues are the froth flow speed and the froth stability. These two factors can be measured and inferred respectively from image analysis of video of the froth surface. Two important hydrodynamic variables for control of the flotation process are the air addition rate and the level of the froth pulp interface.The current work focuses on the relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell. Results are presented that show a strong relationship between flow speed and concentrate yield. These results include tests where the conditions in the cell were not changed, as well as tests involving changes to the cell level and air addition rate. Preliminary results are presented which show a correlation between froth stability and froth percent solids.Future developments of the system will include comprehensive froth texture typing, colour space and stability analyses."

"The maintenance strategies in the mining industry are changing from operative and periodic inspection strategies to a condition-based, predictive maintenance strategy centred in vibration analysis plus complementary techniques. Condition monitoring can also help to improve availability by being able to pinpoint and diagnose problems on operating machinery at an early stage. This reduces unscheduled downtime and production losses.However, in mining, for shovels operating in transient modes, with variable load and/or speed, the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) standard approach is not directly applicable for analysis. This work illustrates how spectral order analysis and new transforms, called time-frequency transforms (TFT), allow us to monitor the shovel when it is working. Some practical examples showing the application of these analysis techniques to occasional vibrations measured on hoist and crowd transmission of a shovel are also presented. It is shown that at present, it is possible to carry out the vibration monitoring in the mining shovel while it is working, therefore avoiding the high cost of a loss of production which can occurr in traditional monitoring, where the measurement is taken while the shovel is out of production."

Endako Mine is an open pit molybdenum mine located in the north central region of British Columbia, Canada, approximately 160 km. west of Prince George. Production for the latter part of 1992 is expected to average at 63,500 tonnes per day of which 27,000 tpd constitute the mill feed. This production is achieved with five 15 to 19 cu. yd. electric shovels, six Euclid R190 and two Unit Rig M120 diesel-electric haul trucks, and three 121;.1 inch electric rotary drills. There are three ore zones delineated into pit areas called the Endako, Denak East and Denak West. Present mill feed source is the South East stage of the Endako Pit while the stripping is carried out in the South Wall stage also of the Endako Pit. The mine high grade aggregate is reduced in the primary and secondary crushing circuits before processing in conventional RM/BM/flotation circuits. The majority of the Molybdenum Sulphide (MoS2) is roasted on site to produce technical grade Molybdenum Oxide (MoO3) while a portion is further refined and treated to yield a 99.9% pure Molybdenum Sulphide (MoS2) "Ultrapure" product.

The factor of safety, the traditional measure of stability for earth embankments, is graphically presented in factor of safety charts in this Bureau of Mines report. Factor of safety contours are drawn for homogeneous earth embankments for two contrasting situations: (1) no phreatic surface and (2) a phreatic surface that assumes 10-pct freeboard. The factor of safety can be read directly from the charts if the physical properties of the soil and the geometry of the embankment are known. The curves provide a quick first approximation of the "most stable" and "least stable" condition of the embankment. The Simplified Bishop Method was used for the safety factor calculations, and a sequence of least squares curve fitting steps was used to present the factor of safety in final chart form.

The compound material of Nano-TiO2 Supported on the diatomite was prepared by the hydrolytic method with purified diatomite and TiCl4. The compound material was characterized by SEM, XRD, TEM, EDX, XPS, and the application test of the compound material was studied. The characterization test results showed that the Nano-TiO2 was coated on the surface of diatomite, the crystal of TiO2 is anatase, and the average crystal size is 12 nm. The pore diameter was reduced, but pore volume and surface area of the compound material are increased after Nano-TiO2 Supported on the diatomite. The application test results for treating coking waste water and formaldehyde gas show that the compound material of Nano-TiO2 / diatomite has adsorption and photo-catalytic function and strong degradation performance for phenol and formaldehyde.

SYNOPSIS Wet high-intensity magnetic separation was examined as a method for the recovery of copper and lead from Tsumeb flotation tailings. Bench-scale and pilot-plant tests were conducted and, despite the very low magnetic susceptibilities of all the complex copper and lead minerals, copper and lead recoveries of over 60 per cent and almost 50 per cent respectively were obtained at a combined copper and lead grade of up to 13,5 per cent. The recoveries were found to be practically independent of magnetic induction in the range 0,5 to 2,2 T, and the grade of the magnetic concentrate decreased with increasing magnetic induction. The grade of the magnetic concen¬trate improved when the flowrate of the slurry was increased, and desliming was found to have a profound effect on the. metallurgical process. Particles smaller than 10 µm were not recovered, and their presence in inefficiently deslimed samples impaired the overall performance of the magnetic separation
