Understanding sources of dissolved metals and transport characteristics of acid drainage is needed to assist land-use strategies in mineralized regions, particularly in the semi-arid southwestern United States. Water- quality samples were collected from mined and un-mined parts of the Patagonia and southern Santa Rita Mountains of southern Arizona from streams, springs, seeps, adits, alluvial wells, and bedrock wells. Water quality during base-flow conditions was compared with that *of runoff samples from infrequent winter and summer storms. The largest fraction of annual discharge in these ephemeral streams consists of storm runoff, although springs provide a steady source of low discharge base flow to numerous intermittent perennial reaches. Several abandoned mines in the northern Patagonia Mountains contribute acid and heavy metals to streams. During base-flow conditions in mineralized areas, natural springs and intermittent stream reaches produce acidity but the volume is typically low and acidity is often diluted or neutralized down gradient. Overland runoff contains low concentrations of dissolved metals and moderate acidity, however, stream waters were strongly acidified and metal-laden from contact with abundant pyrite-bearing stream sediments derived from erosion of waste-rock material in and along the sides of the stream channel.

The recent paper by Bain (1981) contains an unfortunate, and potentially misleading typographic error. On page 9, second paragraph, Bain states that, "some samples of drill core from the (Candlow) Formation ... contain up to 90 ppm gold and 2 000 ppm arsenic". The gold value should read 90 ppb. In fact, in the original version of the paper (Bain, 1980), the gold value quoted was actually 60 ppb.Bain also refers briefly to some geochemical data which is attributed to me, and which I feel require some clarification.In addition, the paper contains some factual errors relating to the occurrence of carbonate and potential host rocks to Carlin-type gold deposits in the Candlow Formation.

Placer/Nautilus currently holds approximately 15,000 km2 of tenements in PNG waters, either granted or under application, covering all reported seafloor hydrothermal vent occurrences.

A RECONNAISSANCE Of the manganese-and chrome-ore deposits of Cuba was made by the writer, as a representative of the U. S. Geological Survey, in company with Mr. Albert Burch of the Bureau of Mines under instructions of the Secretary of the. Interior, in the Spring of 1918. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for the use of the United States Government as to the location, character, quantity, and availability of the manganese and chrome-ore deposits in Cuba. Accordingly, the work comprised the examination of such deposits as seemed to be of promise, without regard to stage of development, with a view to determination of the quantity and quality of ore likely to become available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve. While it was possible to visit most of the deposits that seemed to be of promise, there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Manganese ore is found in Cuba in Oriente, Santa Clara, and Pinar del Rio Provinces, but in Oriente Province only does it occur in large commercial quantities. There, the deposits are in three areas: one north of Santiago de Cuba, one south of Bayamo and Baire, and one on the Caribbean coast between Torquino Peak and Portillo. In Santa Clara Province, a little ore has been found near the Caribbean coast west of Trinidad; and in Pinar del Rio Province, manganiferous material occurs north of the city of Pinar del Rio and farther west near Mendoza. The manganese ores of Cuba occur, principally, in sedimentary rocks, such as limestone, sandstone, and shale, that are in places metamorphosed, and. in beds that originally may have been water-laid tuff

Extracellular bacterial protein (EBP) from Paenibacillus polymyxa was isolated. Adsorption of bacterial cells of Paenibacillus polymyxa as well as EBP onto pyrite, galena and sphalerite was studied. Both bacterial cells and EBP was found to have different adsorption density for different minerals. Protein from mineral surfaces were extrated and examined through SDS PAGE electrophoresis. Specific group of protein was found to be adsorbing, specific to respective minerals. EBP was fractionated through FPLC. Adsorption studies were carried out with each fractions. Difference in adsorption density was observed for individual minerals. Flocculation and flotation experiment were carried out with these mineral specific EBP. Pyrite was selectively removed from ternary mixture of galena and spharite through flocculation anf flotation using pyrite specific EBP. Mineral specific EBP was found to selectively separated remove pyrite from the complex sulphide mixture.Zetapotential studies were carried out to examine the surface chemical changes of the minerals on interaction with EBP. Hydrophobicity of the minerals were carried out on interaction with bacterial cells as well as mineral specific EBP.

In order that the use of continuous mining machines be most economic, the equipment must be operated at rated capacity as much of the time as possible and downtime for repairs kept at a minimum. A large factor influencing any proposals for maintenance programs is the complexity of the machines—often the intricacies of the precision-built equipment requires engineering knowledge byond the scope of mine maintenance personnel. A training program is part of the answer; there are others. In addition to investigating a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program, Mountaineer Coal Co. has launched a detailed preventive maintenance program to combat extensive downtime often encountered when continuous miners are used. Everyone in the coal industry knows the importance of operating continuous miners at their rated capacity as much of the time as possible. The potential capacity of the miner is such that l-min. delay means from 3 to 8 tons of coal lost. Today's miner is a well designed, precision-built machine, complicated with hydraulic and electrical equipment and complex mechanical assemblies with all possible combinations of gears, levers, and rods. As the machine becomes more complex, the problem of maintenance becomes more acute. The transition from conventional to continuous mining has taken place so rapidly that the mine mechanic has been unable to keep pace. When there is a machine failure, the maintenance man usually employs either the trial-and-error or the play -it-by-ear method of repair, but this represents an expensive proposition. Mine mechanics, maintenance superintendents, and mine managers complain about the complexity of the machines and how difficult it is to keep them running. There is no shortage of skill in the design offices. Machines are designed by good engineers, but for engineers. What's the answer? Better trained maintenance men—better maintenance instruction—better field service. These are all good corrective measures, but the real cure is to provide for the men at the do it level. Designers have got to cooperate with men to simplify maintenance on the increasingly complex machine. The designer must be aware of how his machine can be maintained. Sometimes a simple design change in a bearing, oil seal, or a bushing will correct recurrent breakdowns. Parts such as filters, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pivot pins can be better arranged on the machine to make them accessible so that the mine mechanic can easily keep the machine producing. Therefore, to get our maintenance off on the right foot, the program must begin back in the design office, before the machine is delivered to the mine property. Realizing the importance of this aspect, our company set out on a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program. This is a formal program in which quarterly reports are written covering machine defects, design weakness, and general problems relating to machine maintenance and performance. The manufacturer in turn comments on each and every item appearing in these reports, indicating the action he proposes to take. In addition to the written reply, meetings are scheduled with manufacturer representatives to discuss further the outlined problems. The benefits realized from this organized program are both substantial and far reaching. Good maintenance begins with a good design. The subject of preventive maintenance is not a new one. Volumes have already been written on the subject. It consists primarily of doing the maintenance work when you want to rather than when the machine demands it. However, a preventive maintenance program can be overdone. Theoretically, if carried to ridiculous extreme, all working time could be spent inspecting and repairing the machines and no time would be left for production output. Our goal in maintenance is to maximize running time for all machines, and to prevent or at least minimize production downtime. The high temperature properties of Fe-Cr-Co-Ni base alloys and the effects of hardening element additions on these properties are rationalized on the basis of general principles of alloying. DURING the past few years the base elements in high temperature austenitic alloys have gradually been changed from iron-rich materials to nickel-rich, then to cobalt-rich and more recently to various iron, cobalt, and nickel combinations, all with an approximately constant chromium content of 20 pct. Concurrently, the hardening additions of the incongruous* elements, have been shifted from small amounts of a single element to various ratios of molybdenum, tungsten, columbium, carbon, titanium, and aluminum with the percentages of these constituents continually increasing. It has been known that the typical soft high temperature alloy (such as Inconel) consisted of face-centered cubic austenite, but the effect of varying the composition of the base elements, iron, chromium, nickel, and cobalt, has not been broadly analyzed. Therefore, it was reasoned that the first major problem in the understanding of the properties or the further development of high temperature alloys was to study systematically the effect of composition upon the mechanical properties of face-centered cubic Fe-Ni-Co-Cr austenitic solid solutions. The matrix of the strong high temperature alloys (such as Inconel X) is usually also a face-centered cubic solid solution of iron, nickel, chromium, and cobalt but with additional phases which can be generally classified as intermetallic compounds and carbides. It is usually observed that combinations of the hardening elements, tungsten, molybdenum, columbium, tantalum, titanium, aluminum, carbon, and others have been used in these strong high temperature alloys. (written discussiont).-For electrical measuring instruments, especially those types that involve the Wheat-stone bridge or potentiometer principle and standards of electrical resist-ance, there has been, for a considerable time, a need for better resistance materials. For a satisfactory resistance material, much depends on the purposes for which it is to be used. For potentiometers and Wheatstone bridges, such as are in more or less general use, and the more common forms of resistance standards, a good quality of manganin answers fairly well. However, it should not be presumed that manganin is considered ideal for the purpose, for in measuring instruments and resistance stand-ards, there is still much to be desired. An experience of more than 10 years in the study of the resistance standards and resistance apparatus shows that manganin resistances change with time in a way that is very annoying and the maintenance of the unit of resistance to the desired accuracy requires an excessive amount of work or may be said to be prac-tically impossible. The changes in resistance are generally most rapid and erratic in resistances of very low and very high values. In resist-ances of low value, the resistance material is often in the form of thin sheets so that the surface is large and usually more or less unprotected from the atmosphere, or the oil in. the case of oil-immersed standards. In resistances of high value, the resistance material is in the form of fine wire and, therefore, the surface is large compared with the cross-section. In resistances of medium value, the surface is less, compared with the cross-section, or better protected, usually by a silk wrapping impregnated with shellac. This suggests that one of the difficulties with manganin is slow surface action or oxidation, even when an effort has been made to protect the surface from such action However, the changes observed cannot all be accounted for on this basis. There are, presumably, also some internal changes in the resistance material even when it has been annealed. Further; the changes in manganin resistances seem to be more or less independent of its electrical properties. In other respects, too, manganin is not ideal.

A GREAT deal of work has been done at Britannia during the past three years in improving and standardizing rounds for development headings, and the results obtained have been very gratifying. The round which has recently been adopted as a standard for all drifts and cross-cuts has, in some instances, doubled the average length of break formerly obtained. It has also increased the footage of advance per labour shift and reduced explosives' consumption. At the present time, with a shortage of skilled labour, more control is necessar7 in directing the drilling of rounds. The use of a standard round has been o great assistance to the foremen and shiftbosses. NATURE OF GROUND Most of the ground encountered consists of a moderately silicified chlorite schist, known locally as G.M.S (green-mottled schist). It cannot be termed hard ground, because a three and one-half inch Leyner will drill at an average rate of twelve inches per minute. Due to the abrasive nature of the ground, the gauge of the steel wears rapidly and in most cases one set of steel is needed for each hole. The ground is not 'free breaking and holes must be spaced correctly to obtain a maximum break. DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARD ROUND FOR THREE-SHIFT OPERATION Late in 1940, a development programme was started involving 7,000 feet of drifting, 6 ft. By 7 1/2 ft. In cross-section, in two headings. Plans were drawn up to advance the headings on three shifts. Equipment used in the headings was as follows: D.A.35 Leyner?machines, Eimco Model 12B mucking machines, nine one-ton end-dump cars, one Mancha Little Trammer on the longest heading, 20-pound rail, 4-in. 15 compressed-air line, 15-in. Fan pipe connected to 5 h. P. Coppus fan. Diamond-drill cross-cuts, 16 feet in length, were cut every 250 feet. Switches were installed at these cross-cuts and they served as passing points for the cars. One siding seventy feet in length was cut in each heading at approximately the half-way point. The cycle of operations planned was to muck out, drill, and blast each shift. Previous performance in this type of ground indicated that a daily advance of 12 feet to 14 feet might be made. However, if a better type of round could be developed, an increased daily advance would be possible. A study of the time available for each operation in a net working shift of six and one-half hours indicated that the maximum depth of round that could be mucked, drilled, and blasted each shift would be six and one-half feet. When this maximum depth was decided upon, the next problem was to develop a satisfactory round. Due to ventilation difficulties and to the short net working shift, the whole round had to be blasted at one time. In other words, no blasting of the cut-holes could be done.

The applicability of the Q-system [Barton et al. 1974] to Australian underground metal mines is discussed with reference to two common design issues: ground support for horizontal mine development, and assessing the stability of bored raises. Installed ground support in mine development is com-pared to empirical estimates using the Q-system and associated support capacity calculations. Data are graphically presented from 59 specially selected sites at 15 contributing mines. The actual performance of large-diameter raise-bored shafts is also compared to empirical stability assessments using a modified version of Q (Qr, after McCracken and Stacey [1989]). Lower-bound Qr values are plotted against raise diameter for 47 selected sites at 23 mines in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The influence on Q and Qr of some geotechnical aspects of the Australian landscape, the dynamic nature of mines (compared to civil construction), and occupational health and safety regulations are discussed. Stability and support assessments that are based just on Q or Qr are not always conclusive. It is often necessary to consider other rock mass parameters, the regulatory environment, and risk issues. These results are interim; further data collection and analysis are required with regard to comparing actual performance versus empirical assessments.

The constitution of the system silver-mercury has attracted the attention of many investigators during the last two decades, but since their results are for the most part in poor agreement, there is little need for a review of their individual contributions. It remained for the very careful thermal and microscopic investigation of Murphy1 in 1931 to give the constitutional diagram in its present and unquestioned form, which is shown in Fig. 1. He devised methods for taking cooling curves on alloys under high pressures and for the microscopic observation of alloys which contained liquid mercury as a structural constituent at ordinary temperatures. The compositions of the intermediate phases were confirmed and supplemented through X-ray analyses by Preston2 and Stenbeck.3 According to Murphy, at 2760 C. silver is able to dissolve 44 to 45 weight per cent of mercury, which may increase at lower temperatures to about 50 per cent. Preston concluded that the saturation boundary occurred at 46 ± 2 per cent at 100° C. From the values reported in the literature, these are the only ones that may be accepted as lying even in the right region. Preparation of Alloys The silver used in the present investigation was supplied by the United States Metals Refining Co. through the courtesy of the Committee on Industrial Uses of Silver and, since a complete spectrographic and chemical analysis was furnished, no attempt was made to purify it or to further establish the impurities present. The analyses reported by the company are shown in Table 1. Milligan4 has found that the magnesium content is probably less than 0.0005 per cent.

While conducting an investigation on electrolytic reduction of magnesium oxide in 1943, it became necessary to obtain accurate data on the conductivity and density of various mixtures of fused chlorides. AZ the required information was not available in the technical literature, or there were inconsistencies in the data from several investigators, an independent study was made at the Bureau of. Mines laboratory at Salt Lake City on the conductivity and density of the molten chlorides MgCl2, CaCl2, BaCl2, KCl, and NaCl and the binary mixtures of MgCl2 with the other four chlorides. Studies were also made on the binary system KCl-CaCl2 and on certain portions of several ternary systems. Measurements covered a temperature range from the melting point to 1,000° C. The results of this study were reported in an intra-Bureau report prepared early in 1944. Since then the Bureau of Mines has received several requests for data on fused chlorides; the results of the previous study, therefore, are being published to make the data available.

The removal of dissolved arsenic from mine waste waters utilizing a lime/phosphate precipitation technique has been studied on a laboratory scale at Montana Tech of The University of Montana and on a pilot scale at MSE Technology Applications as a wastewater treatment process potentially capable of removing dissolved arsenic to <50 µg/L. Arsenic bearing lime and lime/phosphate slurries were subjected to laboratory extended-time air-sparged aging for over four years. The lime slurries released their arsenic back into solution in a relatively short period of time, whereas the lime/phosphate slurries showed limited release of arsenic. The developed process has been pilot scale tested by MSE-TA for the EPA Mine Waste Technology Program on three waters, ASARCO smelter blowdown water, ASARCO thickener overflow water, and Mineral Hill Mine groundwater. The laboratory study results will be presented and discussed in this presentation. The pilot scale results will be presented and discussed in a companion presentation. In order to investigate locations, source parameters, and source mechanisms of mining induced seismic events, a local network of seismic stations was installed at a coal mine in the eastern part of the Ruhr District (Germany). The recorded events were located with the help of an anisotropic velocity model, which accounts for the fine layering of the carboniferous strata. Most of the events took place about 50 m above the working Luise 76-10. Their locations correlated with the advancing working face, and the number of events increased when pillar edges were undercut. The source mechanism, i.e., the orientation of the fracture plane and the direction of displacement on this plane, could be determined for several seismic events. The majority of them was characterized by a fracture plane parallel to the working face and an almost vertical dislocation on this plane towards the goaf a mechanism resembling the breaking down of the hanging wall. The fracture plane had a dimension of about 100 m. Probably the fracturing of a sandstone layer, located approximately 40 m above seam Luise, was responsible for the observed seismicity

The value of Alabama&apos;s nonfuel mineral production in 1983 was $361.3 million, an increase of $61.9 million over that of 1982. The increase reversed a downward trend that started in 1980 and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State. Output of most nonfuel minerals increased to some degree with unit value increases creating the record-high value year. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and crushed stone were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; fourth in ferroalloys, dimension marble, common clay, and fire clay; fifth in bentonite and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the seventeenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes.

The auto-oxidation of sulfur dioxide to form sulfuric acid in commercially produced barren and recycle liquors, containing 1.66 and 4.56 gpl Fe respectively, from Elliot Lake was studied. A gas mixture, containing 3.5% SO2 and air was introduced into these liquors through a frit at a rate of 6.0g SO2 per hour per liter of solution. The barren and recycle were heated to 60°C. At the end of the first 24 hours of the process the concentrations of acid produced were 158 and 220 gpl H2SO4 for the barren and recycle respectively. Corresponding conversion efficiencies were 70 and 83%. In the period from 24 to 36 hours the rate of acid production decreased so that the H2SO4 concentrations at the end of 36 hours were 180 gpl for the barren and 260 gpl for the recycle; average conversions for the initial 36 hours were 55 and 68% respectively. Many investigators1&apos;2&apos;3 have considered the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to form sulfuric acid in aqueous solutions containing metallic ions. A summary of the work performed on this subject prior to 1946 has been presented by Keyes4 who described the auto-oxidation process as follows. Keyes also suggested that in this second reaction ferric ion serves as a catalyst for the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid. Neytzell-de Wilde and Taverner5 have reported on the use of auto-oxidation to produce a 4 to 5% sulfuric acid solution for use in a cyclic leach process at South African uranium plants. This paper describes investigations carried out to determine the feasibility of using the auto-oxidation process to produce sulfuric acid solutions of as high concentration as possible using commercially produced uranium plant barren and recycle liquors from the Elliot Lake region of Ontario. These liquors contained 1.66 and 4.56 gpl respectively of iron, chiefly in the ferrous state. This investigation is of particular interest to the uranium producers in Elliot Lake where the ores contain 3 to 4% sulfur, as sulfides. Flotation of these sulfides and roasting of same to produce SO, bearing gases have been successfully demonstrated using conventional methods.6&apos;7 Barren and recycle solutions, as described previously, are also produced in large tonnages by these uranium producers. The experimental method and apparatus used to examine the auto-oxidation process will be described first. Then the tests carried out on laboratory prepared aqueous solutions containing ferric sulfate to determine optimum conditions will be presented. The next section will describe the tests using the commercial barren and recycle liquors. A final section will summarize the conclusions of the work. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURES Two types of solutions were used in the tests, a laboratory prepared aqueous solution containing definite amounts of ferric sulfate, and commercially produced iron bearing solution obtained from a uranium leaching plant in the Elliot Lake area. Two liters of a solution to be examined were placed in a 3 in. diam by 30 in. long glass cylinder with a cross-sectional area of 7 sq in. A mixture of air, and SO2 supplied from a lecture bottle for convenience, was introduced into the bottom of the vessel through a standard 30 mm glass frit, 700 sq mm in area. The temperature of the apparatus was controlled by a heating tape and variable transformer. Exhaust gases were vented to atmosphere. At the end of the test period the gas flow was shut off and the solution was analysed for H2SO4, Fe ++, and Fe +++, by conventional means. Four variables were examined using the laboratory prepared aqueous solution of ferric sulfate. First, the effect of SO2 concentration, from 1 to 1076, in the feed gas mixture was considered. A Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) geophysical survey was trialled in Bowen Basin Permian coal measures overprinted by Cretaceous intrusion. The trial’s intention was to compare whether TEM could assess residual coal more accurately and economically than drilling.TEM results were promising but had limitations. TEM did not compare to drilling for defining coal thickness or relative level definition. However, TEM resolved conductive anomalies laterally; providing a qualitative picture of remnant coal.Three material types and associated conductivities occur within the trial area: overburden (sandstone/siltstone), intrusive sills and heat affected coal.Ground conductivity was analysed by measuring decay of residual current within the TEM loop. Fast decay related to resistive overburden and intrusion, attenuated decay related to conductive coal.Generally speaking, carbon content governs coal resistivity where good quality, low ash, bright coal is more resistive relative to dull, high ash coal. Though in the trial area, relative to intrusion and overburden, coal was found to be the most conductive of the three materials.By modelling conductive anomalies, a general picture emerged of remnant coal regions. Aliar baixo custo à qualidade do aço é um desafio vital na siderurgia. Neste cenário, o conhecimento do efeito das variáveis de processo sobre o produto é uma ferramenta essencial. O vazamento do aço dos conversores LD é tradicionalmente dividido em vazamento acalmado e efervescente. Neste estudo avaliou-se o efeito de algumas das variáveis das práticas de vazamento de aços ABNT 1006 sobre composição química, rendimento de adições e limpeza interna. Esta classe de aço representou cerca de 35% da produção da CSN em 2012. Através da comparação dos resultados industriais e avaliações teóricas, o estudo busca orientar os aciaristas sobre o efeito da escolha da pratica de vazamento e desoxidação na qualidade final e no custo de produção do aço em questão.
