All projects that are implemented, have been given corporate go-ahead on the basis of a set of clearly defined targets. These are typically a production goal at a capital cost, operating cost and production schedule, that will yield an acceptable return on investment by the companies internal criteria. The challenge for the implementation team is two-fold, firstly to properly define the project criteria prior to board approval and secondly to deliver an operating facility that meets these objectives, in particular the ROI. The paper addresses the issues a project team and the company management must address for a successful project. Key questions that will be explored are: ? What is the status of key technologies? Are they well proven in commercial practice, completely novel or in between? ? Is the project schedule driven by market constraints or cash flow constraints? ? Are the risks of fast tracking worth the potential rewards? ? For a retrofit project, are all the technical and production interfaces and issues known at the time of approval to proceed? ? How much should be invested in technological development and engineering and at which phase? ? For an owner-operator, how much responsibility is it wise or appropriate to push down to vendors? The answers to these questions for a specific project will define how you go about a project, the resources required, the contracting strategies, the phasing and the appropriate level of investment in the definition and procurement phases, prior to starting major capital commitments and construction.

INTRODUCTION Dynamic (seismic or microseismic) methods of determining the stability of structures in rock are based on detecting and analyzing the characteristics of seismic energy that has originated from or traveled through the rock mass. This seismic energy can be in the form of naturally occurring rock noise energy resulting from structural adjustments within the rock or can be introduced into the structure by physical means, such as by blasting or impact. In either case, the seismic energy radiating through the rock mass can be detected using standard equipment and can be analyzed by established techniques to reveal a wide variety of information concerning the condition and stability of the rock mass through which the energy has traveled. In the following sections, the basic instrumentation required for seismic and microseismic studies is described, and some of the presently used applications of these methods are discussed to exemplify the state of the art. INSTRUMENTATION Seismic disturbances in a rock structure generate two types of seismic wave radiation, body waves and sometimes surface waves, which radiate outward in all direc¬tions from the source of the disturbance. Underground mining applications are generally concerned only with discerning the characteristics of the resulting body waves, i.e., the compressional (p-wave) and the shear (s-wave) energy. As these two forms of energy travel through the rock structure, the particles of the rock mass are caused to vibrate, and the vibration character¬istics resulting from each of the two types of wave are distinct. Some important differences are: 1) Compressional and shear waves travel at different velocities through the rock structure. 2) The frequency at which each wave causes particles to vibrate is different, and may range from about 50 to 100 000 Hz. 3) The amplitude or energy level of each wave is different, with the shear energy usually being the greatest. These differences form the basis for equipment se¬lection for individual studies and for modern data analysis techniques. The following sections describe the basic equipment necessary to detect and record seismic wave energy data and show several examples of analysis procedures and how these procedures have been used. In principle, seismic equipment is very simple. It consists of a geophone (or geophones) to detect the seismic energy vibration and convert that vibration to an electric signal, an amplification system to increase the level of that signal, and a means of monitoring and/or recording the signals detected. Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a typical system. The following sections offer a very brief discussion of system components and their individual functions. A more complete discussion is given by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Geophones The function of the geophone is to detect the vibrations caused by the passing of the seismic wave energy and to convert that vibration into an electrical signal that displays both the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the vibration. Particle motion or vibration can be quantified and measured by measuring displacement, velocity, or acceleration of the particles. Thus, there are three types of geophones: displacement gages, velocity gages, and accelerometers. The choice of gage depends on the characteristic frequencies of the seismic energy to be monitored and the sensitivities of each type of geophone. In general, displacement gages are used for low-frequency monitoring (periods to 1.0 Hz), velocity gages for medium-frequency monitoring (1.0 to 250 Hz), and accelerometers for high-frequency monitoring (250 to 10 000+ Hz). Experience has shown that in underground studies, the choice of which gage to use lies between velocity gages and accelerometers. An easy, accurate method for selection of gage type is discussed by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Once the type of geophone has been selected for use, it must be properly installed, and in the installation procedure the most important step is insuring that the gage is firmly attached to a competent portion of the rock structure. Poorly mounted geophones may entirely fail to recognize low-level seismic signals and will distort the information from signals they do see. Amplifiers Seismic events associated with mine structures occur over a very broad range of energy which results in a broad range of geophone output levels. In general, geophone output levels occur in the microvolt to low milli-volt range, and it is necessary to amplify these signals in order to drive recording or monitoring equipment. Ceramic filtration plates are used for dewatering slurries with high solid concentrations and particles in the size range of 30 μm to 150 μm. After extensive operating times, the ceramic filter plates at Minas Rio in Brazil begin to blind due to the precipitation of barium sulphate on the surface of the ceramic filter plate, which reduces the overall efficiency of the filtration process. Further research is needed to identify the barium precipitate phases on the blocked filter plates and its thermodynamic and kinetic behaviour in the system. A crystallography analysis was performed on the sample and the results showed that there are two different sets of precipitates formed on the filter plate: grey crystals which were large and scatted on the filter plate and red micro crystals that covered the entire surface of the filter plate. The red microcrystals on the sample were identified with XRD, which indicated that the sample contained barium sulphate in the mineral form barite. Experiments were conducted to determine the optimum conditions under which barium precipitation will occur. The conditions tested as a possible driving force for barium sulphate precipitation were the effect of temperature, pH and concentration. The pH and temperature ranges were pushed to both the lower and higher boundaries. The effect of temperatures as low as 15oC was studied and pH levels of 7 and upwards. The first nuclei started appearing at a pH of 7 but significant growth is promoted at higher pH levels. The X-Ray diffraction analysis confirmed the phase of the precipitates formed, and the orthorhombic crystallographic structure formed is a characteristic of barium sulphate. In the plant where the 800m diameter cyclone was tested, 500 STPH of 50m x 0 raw coal was pulped in a heavy medium tank and pumped originally to four 700mm heavy medium cyclones. For the test one of these units was replaced by an 800mm diameter cyclone with the subsequent feed pressure for both units sets at approximately 15.0 psi. Since this was a feed to zero plant, an appropriate bleed of heavy medium to the dilute medium circuit was established to en- sure that the cleaning of the 500m x 0.5mm raw coal would not be adversely affected by high levels of 0.5mm x 0 fine coal present in the heavy medium. The medium gravity measured varied between 1.41 and 1.43. During a three-hour test on June 10, 1983, the raw coal sample was collected from the feed belt while the clean coal and refuse samples were collected separately at proper locations along the product streams of the two different diameter cyclones. All of these samples were shipped to the laboratory for screen and sink- float analyses. The raw coal screen and ash analyses are shown in Table 1.

In this investigation, TiH2 powders were coated with copper and nickel by electroless plating to delay hydrogen evolution. Copper-coated samples were found to have a mixed acicular (2D growth) and cauliflower (3D growth) morphology whereas the nickel-coated samples had a cauliflower morphology. Examinations of the coated powder cross-sections revealed that the coating thickness ranges from 0.2 µm to 4 µm. Uncoated areas on the powder surface and coating flakes unattached to TiH2 particles suggest poor adhesion between the coating and the substrate. The phase transformation undergone by the TiH2 during dehydrogenation was studied in samples taken at intermediary points in the heating cycles and examined by XRD. The findings reveal that as the powder is heated from room temperature to 800°C, it changes from TiH1.971 to Tiu and to aTi. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) was performed to study the effects of the coatings on the temperature of hydrogen release. It was found that increasing the number of plating iterations, and therefore the thickness of the coating, creates a significant shift in the temperature of gas release.

Pumped storage power plants are one of the options to store the fluctuating production of electric energy from renewable sources in a sustainable manner and is able to provide Europe with the opportunity to overcome the effects of climate change. However, due to the extensive land use required when planning the water reservoirs, several projects have been declined after social conflicts raised, even in Germany. Nonetheless, after the flooding and drought periods in northern Germany, the catastrophic floods of July 2021 in south west Germany, the country’s need to decrease its dependency on import of gas and energy supply, and the energy transition goals set for 2030 and 2050, it has become clear that the implementation for water reservoirs must increase in the coming years, whether above ground or underground. Furthermore, not only Germany is interested in the use of underground cavities for water and energy storage, other European countries as Sweden are currently developing studies and solutions to bring this concept soon to reality in Europe. This article introduces the systematic approach for planning and designing large underground cavities for water reservoirs as a sustainable energy transition approach and a climate change response by showcasing the process of selection and results of the “Energy and Water Storage Harz” (EWAZ) research project. Additionally, the results of the evaluation of the effect of implementing the selected underground and surface infrastructure into the current water management system in the region is presented. Finally, the different possibilities evaluated for the underground cavities within the project and the technical challenges involved are be discussed.

This organization is intended to work and cooperate in the closest possible way with existing mine or plant safety organizations in conducting educational , social , and recreational activities for the promotion of health , safety , and efficiency .

All uranium mills are required to perform sampling and analysis for radioactive particulates in their gaseous effluent streams and in the environment. Pacific Northwest Laboratory was requested by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to provide technical assistance to them for their Uranium Mill Health Physics Appraisal Program. In conducting appraisals, air sampling methods used at NRC-licensed mills were reviewed and several deficiencies noted. This paper includes only environmental and effluent particulate sampling although much of the information is applicable to both in-plant and environmental samples. First, the components of a proper sampling program are discussed: program objectives, program design, sampler design, analyses, quality assurance, and data handling. Then the specific deficiencies, or the "pitfalls" from the first 8 mill appraisals are discussed. The first consideration in establishing an air sampling program is defining the objectives of the program. What is air sampling suppose to accomplish? Many of the deficiencies we have observed have resulted because the desired objectives were not clearly established in the minds of the radiation safety staff. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES An environmental air sampling program ought to fulfill the following seven objectives. The first is to: 1) [demonstrate regulatory compliance]. Although a goal of most programs, regulatory compliance, is not well understood. One has not only to comply with the conditions of the source materials licensee, but one must also demonstrate compliance with 10CFR20 and 40CFR190. For example, 10CFR20.106 states: "A licensee shall not possess, use, or transfer licensed material so as to release to an unrestricted area radioactive material in concentrations which exceed the limits specified in Appendix B, Table II of this part .... For purposes of this section, concentrations may be averaged over a period not greater than one year." Even if a mill's license does not require sampling at the site boundary of maximum concentration, a sample may be necessary to demonstrate compliance with 10CFR20. Most mill personnel are painfully familiar with 40CFRl90.10, which states: "Operations.... shall be conducted in such a manner as to provide reasonable assurance that: (a) The annual dose equivalent does not exceed 25 millirems to the whole body.... of any member of the public as the result of exposures to planned discharges of radioactive materials, radon and its daughters excepted... from uranium fuel cycle operations..." This means a licensee's sampling program must give "reasonable assurance" that the member of the general public receiving in the most exposure gets no more than 25 millirems per year. The sampling program necessary to provide that assurance may or may not be a license requirement. However, merely meeting the license requirements and the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessariarly ensure an adequate effluent and environmental air sampling program. The second objective of the environmental air sampling program, is to 2) [identify the source(s) of contaminants]. This will include not only the routine program, but special sampling for verification of sources and nonsources. Only after sampling can a mill operator be assured that roof vents, laboratory hoods, and other localized ventilation systems are not making a significant contribution to environmental releases. An environmental sampling program should also allow the mill operator to fulfill the third objective, to 3) [estimate exposures]. Even before 40CFR190, a sampling program should have provided the mill operator with the information necessary to determine the dose to the "fence post" person, or at least to determine if doses were well below the 10CFR20 limits previously allowed. The program should 4) [detect and measure unplanned releases]. If there is a fire, a scrubber failure, or if a drum of yellowcake breaks open, measured releases will almost always be lower than conservative estimates. Whether or not a system to provide sampling during accidents is needed is almost always a cost-benefit decision. In general, uranium operations do not sample just in case an accident may occur. Yet they may decide on continuous air sampling in lieu of intermittant sampling partially because of the potential for accidents. Another objective of air sampling is 5) [to provide information on the effectiveness of control systems]. This is always a concern with new or modified equipment and may dictate sampling frequency in other situations as well. For instance, if a small leak in a bag filter cannot be detected by other means, then more frequent stack sampling may be indicated. A routine effluent and environmental monitoring program should also fulfill the sixth objective,

"Difficulties arise in implementing environmental technologies in the mining sector because important fundamental processes, which lead to the environmental degradation, are ignored. Weathering rates, the role of bacteria in the process and the incomplete application of the matching principle of accounting at the time the mining disturbance take place. Mining is a multi-stakeholder activity and the environmental problems have multivariate dimensions also effecting process.The limiting factors in the contaminant generation process are the transport of oxygen by advection, convection or diffusion in air or water and the associated microbial activity. Weathering products are transported from the mineral surface by atmospheric precipitation to surface and groundwater. This contamination takes place at different rates, requiring a long time to evaluate technological choices.Restoration efforts have to focus on slow reaction rates in the contaminant generating processes. Technology, which does not address the reaction rates and is selected based on inappropriate time scales, will not provide long-term solutions. Natural approaches to reduce acid generation, based on Ecological Engineering principles have required decades of research and field testing, but now show promise in addressing the cause of AMD and ameliorating its effects."

Purification of molybdenite concentrate from copper concentrates was performed by sulfation. The sulfation of molybdenite concentrates was carried out with pure sulfuric acid (> 96%) at 160–190 °C to study the influence of the reaction temperature and reaction time on the residual copper in the molybdenite concentrates. A purified concentrate with less than 0.1 wt% copper and low levels of other metals were obtained. For up to 7.1 wt% copper, the conditions required are a temperature of 190 °C, a reaction time of 14 h, and a moly/acid weight ratio of 1/1. Furthermore, several designs of sulfation reactors were evaluated in order to obtain the desired level of copper in the product and to analyze the influence of the operational and design parameters on the reactor dispersion number (Le). The basic design for an 80-t/day plant fed with 4 wt% copper molybdenite concentrate requires five backmixed reactors in series, each measuring 8 m3, operating at 190 °C and with a reaction time of 10 h. The reactor must be protected against severe corrosion by the hot sulfuric acid with either Teflon, glass or ceramic.

The Western Australian Mining and Petroleum Research Institute (WAMPRI) was established in 1981 by the Western Australian Government as a funding and co-ordinating Institute to foster research into the mining and petroleum industry within this State. To June 1984, the Institute has sponsored 34 projects with a total notional value of $2.5 million and an actual cash commitment of $1.5 million. Strong support for WAMPRI has come from Industry with 60 companies contributing half the money needed for the research grants.The 34 WAMPRI projects funded so far cover all aspects of the mining and petroleum geosciences.Several WAMPRI projects are concerned with gold including processing technology and the development of exploration models and techniques, they are providing successful results.Although well supported by Industry there is a surprising lack of applications being submitted to the Institute in the area of mining engineering, where it is felt there is much scope for research projects.

"Ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) nodules and crusts are prime targets for future deep-sea mining ventures due to their unusual enrichment of critical metals, such as Ni, Co, Cu, Ti, Te, Zr, Hf, Nb, Y, and REE. These metals are used in an ever increasing variety of high- and green-tech applications such as alloys, batteries for hybrid cars, fiber-optic cables, or liquid-crystal displays.1 Recovery and processing of these deposits will most likely be cost-intensive and require new solutions.2 Thus, innovative approaches towards the development of sustainable metallurgical processes represent one component that can positively affect the marine mining value chain. Dynamic mineral recrystallization of Fe- Mn oxide phases is a geochemical process that may have notable potential for future hydrometallurgical applications.Our research focuses on Mn oxides – potent trace metal scavengers with high sorptive capacity3 – and biogeochemical mechanisms that control Fe-Mn nodule and crust formation, alteration, and trace element enrichment. Biogeochemical redox cycling of Mn is characterized by microbial oxidation of aqueous Mn(II) to Mn(III,IV) oxides and (a)biotic reduction of these oxides to Mn(II)aq. During this cycling dissolved Mn(II) is in direct contact with solid-phase Mn(III,IV) oxides and can back-react via abiotic pathways (e.g., 4 and references therein). This results in continuous dynamic recrystallization of the Mn mineral substrate through coupled dissolution (trace metal release) – reprecipitation (trace metal incorporation) processes.4 We recently demonstrated in new experiments, that Ni is cycled during manganite recrystallization. It has been shown that, although Ni readily undergoes mineral-fluid repartitioning in the absence of Mn(II)aq, dissolved Mn(II) significantly catalyzes Ni exchange between solid phase and solution. Over a period of 50 days about 30 percent of the Ni atoms in Ni-substituted manganite (natural abundance composition) were exchanged with a 62Ni(II)aq isotope tracer at pH 7.5. Based on these outcomes we employed similar techniques to investigate the impact of dynamic recrystallization on Mn oxide phases in deep-sea ferromanganese nodules and crusts from three circum-Australian locations (South Tasman Rise, Lord Howe Rise, Coral Sea) and the Central Pacific Basin."

Goedehoop Colliery produces 8 million tonnes of coal a year, principally from room and pillar mining, and is situated in the Witbank Coalfield in the Republic of South Africa. The mine has a long and successful record of producing export quality coal from the 2,4 and 5 seams at depths ranging from 20 to 100 metres using modem mining equipment. Following a number of fatalities caused by large and unexplained roof falls in roadways and intersections of supported ground, a review of the roof control system at Goedehoop was carried out. This led in turn to a programme of underground measurements and surveys. This included detailed investigation of the roof falls, horizontal stress mapping, stress measurement and short encapsulation pull testing on roofbolts. These investigations led to a number of important conclusions in relation to the state of stress in the ground, the roof failure mechanisms, standard of rootbolt installation and performance of the roofbolt system. As a result of the work Goedehoop Colliery has made a number of substantive changes to the roof control management system at the mine. These include: 1. A recognition of the importance of horizontal stress as the main factor responsible for roof falls. 2 The forward planning of roof support based on known features which cause the stresses to be elevated. 3. The introduction of a more effective roofbolt system, which can be more easily installed to a high standard. 4. A response system based on risk assessment and monitoring roof movement on a routine basis. The paper describes the knowledge acquired, the conclusions drawn, the changes made and progress to date.

The volume of electric arc furnace (EAF) plus oxygen (BOF) slag produced yearly in the world is about 84 million ton. Because of this, the study of recycling processes as a way to solve the storage problem of these slags rise in importance. There are, however, some inconvenients on using this byproduct: lime, which takes part of the process of steel production, remains as a non-reactive raw product in the slag. Since lime reacts in presence of humidity, forming expansive compounds, slag use is strongly limited. There are some utilizations for the electric arc furnace and oxygen slag in the Civil Construction Industry, mainly as base, subbase and asphalt covering in highways. However, independently of the type of recycling, a period of "cure" of about six months is necessary. Because of this slow cure process this byproduct may turn non-competitive in some regions if compared, for example, with the natural aggregate. The objective of this work is to present the flowsheet of the slags production as a residue both at the electric and oxygen steel plants and, through a bibliographic review, to analize the possibilities and limiting factors for the use of steelmaking slags in the Civil Construction Industry.

The Cigar Lake uranium deposit was discovered in 1981 at the south western end of Waterbury Lake, approximately 660 km north of Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan (see Figure 1). It is the largest undeveloped high grade uranium deposit in the world. It contains proven and probable reserves of more than 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7%. The world average grade is less than 1% U3O8. [ ] The ore body is located about 450 m below surface at the interface between sandstone above and basement rock below (see Figure 2). The sandstone is fractured rock and saturated with water. This makes water inflow a real hazard at the mine. In fact there have already been two significant mine inflow events. The first of these occurred in October 2006 and resulted in the flooding of the mine. The second occurred in August, 2008 during mine recovery activities.

The work of the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines may be considered to have had its beginning in April , 1909 , when H. H. Clark was , appointed electrical engineer in the U. S. Geological Survey. The first manuscript prepared by members of this section was Miners Circular 5, which was issued in October , 1911. During each succeeding year additional papers have been published dealing with questions relating to electrical safety. Since 1916 the electrical section has also conducted laboratory investigations on flame safety lamps and gas- detecting devices and has published reports relating thereto . The following selected list of publications covering safety studies and activities of the electrical section has been prepared for the convenience of those who wish to keep themselves advised concerning electrical safety matters . The list includes only such publications as are applicable to present-day prac tices .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs fur improving mine safety. One area of interest to the Bureau is new and improved means for minimizing the hazards of accidental gas ignition or electrical shock should the frame of an off-track machine assume potential above ground. Various means presently used to prevent such occurences are the use of ground fault detectors for phase to ground faults in ac machines, and grounding conductors and diodes in dc machines. In a three phase ac power center, a phase to ground fault may be detected by monitoring the current in the grounding resistor which is required between the power center neutral on the load side of the power center transformer and ground. Another method for detecting a ground fault is to pass the three load conductors through a toroidal core transformer. The phase currents vectorially add up to zero if none of the phases are faulted, and hence the voltage of the transformer secondary is either zero or not zero if one of the phases is unbalanced or faulted.

The symposium on production for the year 1943 contains few papers on the foreign situation. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. A noteworthy feature of the reports on Texas this year is the map on page 469, which shows the districts covered by the statistics. Excerpts from Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each place in the table may represent one of three possibilities; either the proper entry is determinable and can be supplied by the author, or an approximate figure can be supplied which is the author's best guess and should be entered followed by an x, or it does not apply to the particular field and the space is left blank. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determina-tion. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are suficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on ''Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone. The net thickness of the producing formation should be the thickness of the producing zone, less the estimated amount to cover the portions of the zone that do not yield oil, such as dense shales, etc. It is recognized that for some fields the authors can only make rough guesses; in such cases, they should enter their best estimate followed by an x. Average production per acre-foot need not be reported as it can be calculated by those interested from the figures given. In classifying wells as to producing methods, enter all wells that are not "flowing" in the column headed "Artificial Lift." If possible, add footnotes to indicate whether the lift is "pumping," "gas lift" or "air lift."

Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1945 resulted in the discovery of 23 new fields; one Miocene, eight Frio, three Cockfield-Yegua and eleven along the Wilcox trend. The Wilcox trend appears to he the most active at this time. Producing depths of the new Wilcox discoveries range from 2050 to 10,050 ft. Drilling along the Frio trend has been, for the greater part, projected to the deeper downdip sands. Eighteen of the new discoveries are classified as oil or condensate and five are gas discoveries.
