Within the exploration programs carried on by the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables, the one with the largest coverage (more than 75, 000 square kilometers) is the northern Coahuila Exploration Project. Due to its nature, geochemical exploration methods were selected to obtain quick results. The program included essentially, three main stages : 1. - A regional geochemical stream sediment survey. 2. - Semi-detailed studies of the anomalous areas selected in the previous stage, and 3. - Detailed exploration of the promising areas. To the date, the first two stages have been completed, and the third one is being carried on. The work was started on september 1972, and it will probably take one more year before drilling can be started, but at the end of stage three it is expected that at least 5 important targets will have been detected. The regional work was conducted by 3 field crews, but the detailed program is being done by only one.

Bureau of Mines researchers investigated the combined effect of copper and tin additions on the mechanical properties of hot-rolled steels. Wrought steels containing 0.2 wt-pct C and up to 0.2 and 1.0 wt-pct Sn and Cu, respectively, were made and evaluated by conducting tensile and impact tests and electron-beam microprobe and electron microscopy examination. Tin additions did not significantly affect the tensile properties of steel at different copper contents in the hot-rolled condition. Tin lowered the copper content at which strengthening by copper precipitation normally starts, 0.8 wt-pct, and decreased the strength of steel aged at 1,022° F (550° C). The most adverse effect of tin was lowering the notch toughness of steels at most copper contents.

A lack of experimental data illustrating the effect of composition, particularly in respect to impurities, on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum-alloy die castings induced the authors and their associates to undertake a limited study of these relations. A number of commercial alloys and several experimental variations of a commercial alloy were used for the investigation. Mechanical property, growth, steam, paraffin, salt spray and atmospheric exposure tests were employed. This paper deals with the more accelerated tests and the results they have produced. It is concluded that a high-silicon alloy with all impurities except iron strictly limited to small amounts will develop an excellent resistance to corrosion and retain satisfactory mechanical properties and casting characteristics. As a direct result of this investigation an alloy of this character with superior corrosion resistance is now available commercially. In general, copper increases the strength and decreases the elongation and corrosion resistance. Tin reduces the mechanical properties and the resistance to corrosion. Iron reduces the elongation and, if excessively high, may adversely affect the tensile strength. Even excessively high iron contents do not affect the corrosion resistance, which is fortunate for the die caster as it is this element that is the most difficult to control. Nickel and zinc in limited amounts do not seem to affect the properties or corrosion resistance of at least the high-silicon alloy. Growth tests have confirmed the previous common belief that dimensional changes under either dry or wet conditions at 100" C. are too small to be of practical importance. The predominant methods for mining coal in the USA are room and pillar and longwall. Approximately 95 percent of the coal is mined by room and pillar and 5 percent by longwall. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has an ongoing program to improve the rate, quality, and cost effectiveness of stabilizing the roof for both of these mining systems. In room and pillar mining, the installation of permanent roof support is often the task which paces the system operation, and it thus controls the level of production achieved during any mining shift. Two automatic roof bolt insertion equipment developments are discussed, as well as a flexible drill for operation in thinner seams. Progress will be reported on under- ground trials of a particular flexible drill which has been combined with a bolt inserter to form a compact, reliable module for retrofitting to continuous mining machines. In longwall mining, the use of hydraulic supports on the working face provides roof stability. The DOE has several trials ongoing with shield- type supports in difficult strata conditions which are described, as well as a co-funded project with the Bureau of Mines on a resin injection remedial method for consolidating a shear zone at one site. A project to improve the match of strata conditions to shield design is also described, which involves the use of a 1360 tonne vertical load mine roof simulator.

Minnesota contains a major low- grade copper-nickel sulfide resource within the Duluth Gabbro Complex. Several companies have actively explored this resource. Open pit mining would be required to develop portions of the resource, and as a result, large quantities of sulfide-bearing lean ore and waste rock would be stockpiled. Although the problems associated with high-sulfide tailings and acid mine drainage are well documented, the leaching characteristics of low-grade mineralized stockpiles must be understood for environmental impact assessment, siting, and planning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and AMAX have cooperated in a research program to study leaching and revegetation -of test stock- piles, Six small (1600 'tons) stockpiles were constructed at the MINNAMAX Project Site and they range in composition from 0.29 to 043 g % copper, 0.075 to 0.09% nickel, and 0.6 to 1.45% sulfur. Two of the stockpiles were covered with mineral soil, one was covered with topsoil, and three were not treated Revegetation plots were established on the piles which received a soil cover. Leachate samples and flow measurements were collected at the base of the piles. Initial results indicate that metal concentrations in leachate samples range from 10 to 10,000 times the concentrations found in the streams of the area. During the first growing season, the test pile covered with topsoil yielded 30% less water than untreated test piles. No reduction in yield was observed for the piles that were covered with the less fertile mineral soil. First-year vegetative growth, expressed as biomass, was four times greater on the-topsoil pile than on the mineral soil piles. The long-term effects of vegetation on leachate quantity and quality continue to be investigated.

None of these fields, with the exception of West Delhi, is as yet of any great consequence. The Weeks Island field in Iberia Parish may eventually develop into a considerable reserve.

In any manufacturing organization internal logistics plays a vital role in improving and maintaining the productivity. In Ferro Alloys manufacturing organization where there is huge input of raw material in terms of ore, reductants and variety of fluxes amounting to about four times of the mass of alloy produced need to be handled from yard to furnaces , internal logistics requires utmost attention. Any deviation or mismatch between stock and requirement will affect furnace operation. Though the activities are being outsourced by most of the organization, these require close monitoring. This communication presents an optimization model which can work as a ready reference for the manager to decide upon the material quantity and the furnace to be fed with an objective of minimizing the cost of handling and zero production loss.

"Four sulphide minerals - pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), pentlandite ([Ni,Fe]9S8), and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) - contain the base metals and most of the iron in concentrates of platinum group metals (PGMs). In the pyrometallurgical processing of PGM concentrates these sulphides form a matte during smelting, and iron and sulphur are removed from the matte during the converting process. This paper discusses the roasting of Merensky concentrate in air before smelting, with the purpose of reducing the matte load to the converter.Roasting tests were conducted in a bench-scale rotary kiln at temperatures from 350°C to 700°C. The concentrate tested contained 17.4% sulphur and consisted of 23% pyrrhotite, 16% pentlandite, 11% chalcopyrite, and 2% pyrite. The particles were fine (d50 = 22 µm), and all the sulphide particles were liberated. Roasting in air at 550°C and 650°C for 20 minutes removed respectively 60% and 70% of the sulphur. The iron in the sulphides was oxidized to Fe3O4 (magnetite) at temperatures below 500°C and to Fe2O3 (haematite) at temperatures above 550°C. At 700°C the bed sintered and copper oxides formed. At temperatures below 450°C oxidation was incomplete: pyrrhotite remained and only 30% of the sulphur was removed. Smelting tests were conducted to assess matte fall and the deportment of copper and nickel to matte. It was evident that roasting resulted in lower matte falls (a drop of approximately 60%) compared with matte falls from unroasted concentrate. The iron and sulphur levels in the matte were reduced to below 3.5% and 22% respectively.This paper also briefly describes the mechanisms by which pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are oxidized during roasting. For chalcopyrite, the mechanism proceeds through an intermediate solid solution phase, which extends from Cu1.02Fe1.04S2 to Cu2.04Fe0.72S2 to a copper-rich solid solution of bornite (Cu4Fe1.4S4-Cu2S). The oxidation of pentlandite proceeds through a monosulphide solid solution (Ni0.39Fe0.53S-Ni0.74Fe0.15S) to a solid solution of heazlewoodite ([Ni,Fe]3}xS2). These mechanisms are explored in relation to chemical thermodynamics and microstructures."

Modern technology and the need for published results have created the tendency for exploration to concentrate on drilling and assaying rather than building a broader geological understanding. Though grade is vitally important to a resource estimate, density and volume are also very important aspects that require equal consideration. Wet tropical nickel laterites are developed in humid environments over ultramafic bedrock where the nickel and cobalt are enriched to economic levels by weathering, leaching and supergene processes. These laterites often occur over rugged terrain at higher elevations where there is sufficient rain and stability for the long lateritisation process to occur. For nickel laterite profiles, the variable terrain and significant material type changes within the relatively thin profile make density and particularly volume estimation, just as significant as grade in resource estimation and assessment of resource risk. Drilling alone is generally not a cost-effective way to reduce the risk in laterite volume estimation to acceptable levels. Surface geological mapping, high resolution topographic data and other information such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be used very effectively to improve volume estimates. These data types are all differently structured, have different data density and quality and may potentially overlap. Integration of these disparate data types provide the most cost-effective approach to modelling wet tropical nickel laterite volumes and minimising risk. Grouting technologies are ground treatment techniques used for modifying the behaviour of a mass of soil or rock by injecting a mixture. The sleeved port pipes (also called Tube A Manchette) are highly diffused for grouting treatment of coarse soils and fissured rocks. This paper describes a combination of jet grouting and rock grouting with MPSP (multiple packer sleeve pipe) technique that has been used to realize waterproof curtains under fluvial structures for a cascade hydro-power plant. This is composed by five mini hydro-power plants, placed along the Iskar River, in Bulgaria, and composed by a penstock followed by the power house, a spillway, and an earth dam containing the reservoir. The geology of the site is characterized by an upper alluvial deposit lying over the bedrock. In each site, similar treatments were carried out: an impervious curtain along the plant section, obtained by executing jet-grouting columns in the surficial alluvial layers and grouting the underlying fractured rock by means of port pipes. The temporary embankment, built during the works for protecting each site from the possible river floods, has been waterproofed and stabilized by reinforced jet-grouting columns. The grouting processes have been controlled and monitored by a computerized system. INTRODUCTION The Iskar river cascade hydropower plant is situated northern of Sofia, Bulgaria, and it is composed by nine plants. Actually five of them have been built and produce energy. Each plant is composed by a penstock followed by the turbine building, a spillway, and an earth dam that contains the reservoir. The Iskar rivers runs in a narrow valley characterized by diorite or diabase rocks, with an upper deposit of alluvial soil, composed mainly by gravel and sand. Each plant requires an impervious curtain under the structures and in correspondence of the earth dam: this has been obtained by means of a jet grouting treatment of the alluvial coarse soil, and a grouting treatment with cement mixtures of the underlying rock using the MPSP technology. During the construction of the structures, the site has been shielded from the river water by a temporary earth embankment that has been statically improved and waterproofed by jet grouting columns reinforced with steel tubes; this allowed to work without interruption even in case of flood of the Iskar river.

The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. "ABSTRACT: In the year 2010 the State of Denmark together with the Municipality of Copenhagen, launched a very important and complex Project : the complete construction of a new double Subway Line :the CITYRINGEN.Copenhagen is the capital with a metropolitan population of 1,9 million.This line is like a ring placed in the very town center which includes all the most historical and monumental buildings and churches, with a total length of 17 km, and the presence of 17 stations plus 4 service shafts.The buildings have been built in the last centuries in an area where the groundwater is near to the surface and there are lakes and channels: the techniques adopted were advanced for those times, but limited as far as regards settlements and resistance to horizontal movements.The soil consists in 2 main groups.1.Upper sediments of the glacial ages : thickness total = 5-20 m composed by clay- silt-sand-gravelcobbles- granite boulders and flint in blocs and in layers : frequency and size of these obstacles wherenot determined.2.Limestone layers : 2a. upper limestone : highly fractured ,highly permeable2b.Itermediate limestone : less fractured, medium permeability.2c. Lower limestone : almost not fractured, low permeability.2d Bryozoan limestone : composed by fossils with microscopic dimensionsIn all the limestone formations there are important layers of flint , having thickness variable up to 3 m and important extensions. Benzene areas have been identified, and for those areas special protections against pollution have been implemented.METROSELSKABET ,the public owner of the Cityringen,has set as priority to operate for the construction of the Cityringen the full protection of the environment and the respect of all the stakeholders :Very strong limits for the exhausted gas emissions have been introduced, by far stronger than those applied from the State of Denmark, very strong limits for the acceptable noise emission. And last but not least very important safety measures and procedure to avoid any accident on site."

Fluorspar is the commercial name for fluorite, a mineral that is calcium fluoride, CaF2. The name, derived from the Latin word fluere (to flow), refers to its low melting point and its early use in metallurgy as a flux. It is the principal industrial source of the element fluorine. Cryolite, sodium aluminum fluoride, Na3AlF6, is a rare mineral which has been found in commercial quantities only in Greenland. The natural material has been supplanted by synthetic cryolite for its principal industrial use in the manufacture of aluminum. History Fluorspar was used by the early Greeks and Romans for ornamental purposes as vases, drinking cups, and table tops. Various peoples, including the Chinese and the American Indians, carved ornaments and figurines from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola in sixteenth century Europe. Fluorspar mining began in England about 1775 and at various places in the United States between 1820 and 1840. Production grew substantially following the development of basic open-hearth steelmaking, wherein it is used as a flux. Use was stimulated by growth of the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries, particularly during World Wars I and II. Fluorocarbons entered the picture in 1931. The use of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel began in 1942. Differential flotation for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and common gangue minerals in the 1930s, and the application of heavy-media concentrating methods to the treatment of low-grade ores in the 1940s were outstanding technological advances that facilitated increased production. Recently, pelletizing and briquetting of flotation concentrates for use in steel furnaces and the development of flotation schemes for beneficiating ores containing abundant dolomite and barite have been major improvements in the industry. Uses of Fluorspar Fluorspar is used to make hydrogen fluoride, also called hydrofluoric acid, an intermediate for fluorocarbons, aluminum fluoride, and synthetic cryolite. It is used as a flux in the steel and ceramic industries, in iron foundry and ferroalloy practice, and has many minor specialized uses. Hydrogen fluoride (HF) is produced by reacting acid grade (97% CaF2) fluorspar with sulfuric acid in a heated kiln or retort to produce HF gas and calcium sulfate. After purification by scrubbing, condensing, and distillation, the HF is marketed as anhydrous HF, a colorless fuming liquid, or it may be absorbed in water to form the aqueous acid, usually 70% HF. Synthetic cryolite, organic and inorganic fluoride chemicals, and elemental fluorine are made from hydrofluoric acid. The acid itself is important in catalysis in the manufacture of alkylate, which is an ingredient in high-octane fuel for aircraft and automobiles, in steel pickling, enamel stripping, glass etching and polishing, and in various electroplating operations. The manufacture of one ton of virgin aluminum requires about 50 to 60 lb of fluorine content in synthetic cryolite and alumnium fluoride. This quantity, through improved technology and recovery practices, is being lowered significantly.

Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly In the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decrease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft paper industry, especially in the South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This dean is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorable situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far removed from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4 ? 10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to meet consumer requirements. The water of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting, even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery oil production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-.waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J., has, for a number of rears, been investigating the commercial possibilities of treating the complex saline mineral polyhalite (K2SO4?NgSO4?2CaSO4?2H20) for the recovery of potash and magnesia. Certain proposed processes (1, 2, 3, 4)4/ yield waste liquors that contain the bulk of the magnesium and sulphate originally combined as magnesium sulphate in the polyhalite molecule. "Czochralski pulling has been a very widely used process for growing single crystals for electronic and optical applications. Dopant segregation can significantly degrade the quality and yield of single crystals. We have used the floating-crucible technique for segregation control in Czochralski pulling, our floating crucibles being unique in that the melt passageway is very long. As such, dopant back diffusion is suppressed, even when the cross-section of the melt passageway has to be relatively large to help the melt go through or when the pulling rate is very low. Single crystals of model materials K-doped NaN03 and Pb-doped Sn have been grown with very uniform dopant concentrations. IntroductionSingle crystals of electronic and optical materials are often doped with a small amount of impurities to develop required physical properties, e.g., P and B in Si for n-type and p-type semiconductors, respectively, and Nd in YAG lasers. Dopant segregation can result in nonuniform physical properties, thus degrading the quality and yield of the resultant crystals.Figure 1 is an illustration of the conventional Czochralski process for crystal growth. Several techniques have been developed to control dopant segregation in Czochralski pulling, including the push-pull technique (1,2), the drop-pull technique (3-7) and the floating-crucible technique (8-13). The first two techniques require precise sensing devices and feedback control systems to keep the feeding rate equal to the pulling rate. The last technique is simple since the feeding rate is automatically equal to the pulling rate."

"INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1942 a series of magnetometer surveys on deposits of black sand underlying Pleistocene raised marine terraces along the coast of southwestern Oregon was nada by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. A few preliminary tests had been made in the same area in May 1940 and December 1941.The sands contain fine gold and metals of the platinum group, and, beginning in 1852, extensive, but spasmodic mining and exploration have been done for these precious metals. There are many old placer, mines and prospects, although for the most part the yield of the metals has been small. The sands also contain other minerals of potential value, including ilmenite, magnetite, garnet, zircon, and particularly chromite, and the wartime demand for domestic chromite resulted in extensive testing and development of the known deposits. The purpose of the magnetometer surveys was to determine the efficacy of, magnetic methods in tracing and outlining these known deposits and in prospecting for new ones. The field work was done between March 17 and May 29, 1942, by the author assisted by W.W. Paulsen of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries."

Construction of a 13m shaft through approximately 100m of water bearing soils and another 100m of bedrock was attempted using the Slurry Diaphragm Wall Method with a combination of deep dewatering wells. During excavation within the slurry wall, unexpected groundwater inflows occurred in a structure of loose silty sands. Artificial ground freezing was selected as a remedial method to seal the leaking slurry wall, and as a primary excavation support and groundwater control method for the 30m of overburden material below the base of the wall. Design of the ground freezing system required analysis of both the structural requirements of the unsupported soil, the frost effects against the existing slurry wall and the groundwater control in the area of the breech in the wall. These design procedures are summarized, and construction and excavation techniques and corresponding schedules compared in this paper. Advanced drilling techniques, ground freezing quality control and general contractor procedures for efficient shaft construction are discussed.
