"This is a panel discussion on the milling experience with large volume flotation machines in Canada. Over the past ten years, the Canadian milling industry has been characterized by treatment of ever increasing tonnages of lower grade ores. In order to treat these ores efficiently, mineral processors have been employing increasingly larger volume flotation machines. In older established mills, standard flotation cells have been replaced by the larger volume models with very apparent savings in mill floor space as noted in the Opemiska copper mill.We are pleased to hear from four mill operators with extensive experience on large volume flotation machines. They are:1. I. E. Wahn, metallurgist with Falconbridge-Manibridge, who will describe their mill experiences with the Tank cell and the Maxwell cell.2. G. M. Hughes, mill superintendent of Sherritt Gordon-Ruttan, will detail recent experience with the Agitair cell.3. J. R. Maxwell, mill superintendent of Opemiska Copper, will report on their Maxwell cell installation and operation.4. A. H. The study of the volatilization kinetics of zinc and lead in pellets made of zinc-leadbearing dust mixed with coal powder, in a nitrogen atmosphere and at a temperature range between 1100 °C and 1300 °C, shows that the reduction temperature has a significant effect on the volatilization rates of zinc and lead, and that both the particle size of the coal powder and the extra carbon content has no effect on the volatilization rates. The obtained activation energies for the volatilization of zinc and lead are 79.42kJ/mol and 88.74kJ/mol respectively. The volatilization rate of zinc is controlled by the reaction between the zinc oxide and carbon monoxide while that of lead is controlled by the lead evaporation reaction, and the diffusion of gaseous lead through the gas boundary layer covering the surface of the reduced liquid lead.

As a result of a field examination made during the Bureau of Mines intensive manganese program, three lots of ore were procured from the famous old Paymaster District, 7 miles from Midway Wells, Imperial County, Calif. This district is an old producer and shipped approximately 10,000 tons of 45-percent manganese ore during World War I. A 2-ton lot of ore was taken of a Bureau engineer from the exposure of a small fissure vein in conglomerate on the Turtle Group of claims; 1 mile east of the Pacific Coast Manganese Corp. claims. The vein material consisted of manganese oxides, calcite, and quartz in fairly coarse association.

The intent was coequality among three, (studies of mankind, of science, and of technological empirics). After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. "A study of the geological features of known occurrences of mineralization in Gaspe is the basis for a classification. Nickel, chromite, asbestos and some copper are pre-or syn-Taconic, whereas the most important deposits are tied to granitic post-Taconic stocks. Most occurrences are clearly related to igneous rocks: nickel, chromium and asbestos to Ordovician serpentinite; copper to volcanic rocks of different ages; and copper, zinc and lead to acidic intrusions with apparent zoning. Some lead-zinc deposits lying between the Grande Greve and York Lake formations are stratigraphically controlled. Some occurrences are tied to faults; e.g., the nickel-copper mineralization along the North Grand Pabos fault. Northerly-trending transverse structures appear to coincide with the Gaspe Copper, Mount McGerrigle (Tabletop) granite and Lemieux dome areas of mineralization. JEAN DUGAS, after graduating"

The Bureau of Mines developed cost estimates fur the disposal of phosphate rock washer slimes by pond settling, from a study of the method used at the International Minerals a Chemical Corp., Moralyn Phosphate Operations, Polk County, Fla. Data were obtained by basing phosphate production and slime generation statistics on plant capacity rather than on actual company records. Cost estimates, which were prepared as a guide in evaluating alternative disposal methods and in identifying needed areas of research, could be applicable to any Florida plant using the same disposal method. To conserve mineral resources and to improve environmental conditions, the Bureau recommends further research directed toward developing alternative methods of disposal, including the recovery of water and P205 values from the slimes.

Shear-thickening suspensions abound throughout the hydraulic conveying industry; at least this is the perception of many engineers running plants where hydraulic conveying is commonplace. In reality, shear thickening behaviour is limited, in the main, to high concentrations of fine particles, including colloidal and biological suspensions, at moderate to high shear rates. In the authors? experience most cases of shear-thickening behaviour have been either simple ?coarse? particle interactions, poor instrumentation techniques, or both. In some cases these were obviously heterogeneous flows, while in others flows that were homogenous, or were thought to be homogenous. Examples, which illustrate this erroneous perception are given. However, the trend towards pastes and complex suspensions that use high concentration carrier fluids means that the underlying slurries for many of these flows may now be truly shear-thickening. Unfortunately, suspensions that might exhibit shear thickening also invariably exhibit slip, or wall-particle depletion. These separate phenomena are difficult to resolve experimentally and many observations of apparent shear-thickening behaviour are in fact obscured or convoluted by slip effects. A method is presented whereby the true flow properties of these high concentration suspensions, and hence accurate prediction of pipeline flows, can be made using a parallel plate rheometer.

The Sheep Creek iron deposits, Meagher County, Mont., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 and 1944. Work undertaken included exploratory trenching, churn drilling, petrographic studies, and detailed beneficiation tests. It was determined that the Sheep Creek ores occur both as fissure filling and bedding replacements in thin-bedded shale and arenaceous limestones of the Algonkian Belt series. At least five stratigraphic horizons were found to be mineralized. Metallurgical studies indicate that the ores are not amenable to beneficiation by present-day low-cost methods. Details of geology, sampling, and beneficiation tests are presented in this report.

The following methods have been selected from a large number tried while assaying several hundred samples of placer concentrates. It is thought that some of these methods may be useful to those who are required to assay similar products containing large quantities of metallic articles, such as jeweler's sweepings. No great difficulties will be encountered in assaying black sand from beaches or river bars. Such samples require care in grinding and sifting so that no oversize particles of sold or platinum are lost. It is also necessary to have sufficient silica in the flux to form a fluid slag with the excess of iron, magnesium, or chromium Which such samples contain.

"THE TOWN OF HEDLEY is in the valley of the Similkameen River, about 200 miles east of Vancouver and 25 miles north of the International Boundary between British Columbia and the State of Washington. The main ore deposits are located on Nickel Plate Mountain, northeast of the town.The outcrop of the Nickel Plate system of orebodies is at an elevation of 5,900 feet. It was discovered in 1898 by prospectors and sold in the following year to the Marcus Daly interests of Butte, Montana. Production commenced in 1904 under the name of Daly Reduction Company. In 1909 control passed into the hands of the Hedley Gold Mining Company. Operation of the mine continued until 1930, when exhaustion of known ore reserves forced it to close. Upon the recommendation of Paul Billingsley (3) the mine was optioned by the 1. W. Mercer Exploration Company in 1932. Production began once more in 1934 under the name of Kelowna Exploration Company Limited, and was practically continuous until August 1955, when the mine was again shut down. The name of the latter company was changed in 1951 to Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited.The Mascot Fraction, a small wedge-shaped claim lying astride the Nickel Plate orebodies, was mined by Hedley Mascot Gold Mines Limited between 1935 and 1949. The geological setting and structural control of ore are essentially the same as in the adjoining Nickel Plate Mine.Total production from all operations on Nickel Plate Mountain to the end of 1954 was approximately 3,800,000 tons of gold ore, with a gross value in excess of $48,000,000.General GeologyNickel Plate Mountain occupies the gentle westerly dipping limb of an asymmetrical anticline, the axis of which trends northeasterly. The rocks are composed of a thick pile of Triassic limestone, limy argillite, and quartzite, -resting on a flattish floor of granodiorite near the base of the mountain. Associated with these sediments is a host of porphyritic sills and dykes of gabbro-diorite composition. In the mine area east-west brown soda-rhyolite dykes and north-south black andesite dykes crosscut all the other formations and the ore, probably following steep later fractures."

Introduction and Historical Background The office and mining operations of Pacific Asbestos Corporation are located near Copperopolis, California in the foothills of the Sierras about fifty miles east of Stockton. This is historic country in the heart of the old Mother Lode gold district. Mark Twain's famous story of the jumping frog, written here, is still commemorated in an annual contest in Calaveras County,' and the camp at Poker Flats, described by Bret Harte, was only a few miles from the present mine.2 Joaquin Murrieta, the famous Mexican bandit started his three year reign of terror in this vicinity,3 and Black Bart, the P08 laureate of the stagecoach robbers, held up his first stage at Funk Hill, just three miles north of the mine. His last robbery was at almost the place, on the top of the hill overlooking the Stanislaus River ferry crossing. Although this was his favorite country, and he traveled extensively through it, he was not a credit to his acclaimed profession of Mining Engineer because there is no evidence that he ever recognized the asbestos, and he was finally caught as a consequence of the robbery at the ferry.4 One of the old stagecoach roads crossed the Stanislaus River at the mine site, and the ferry landing may still be seen from the main haul road into the pit. The road itself is partly buried under the rock dumps. In spite of its location and apparently prominent exposure, the first work on the asbestos deposit was not recorded until 1904.5 Development of the present operations was started in 1959 by Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corporation, a subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company. Management control of the company changed hands several times and it was later reorganized under the name of Pacific Asbestos Corporation. In December, 1968, a controlling interest was acquired by H. K. Porter Company, Inc. Figure (1) shows the mill and office buildings as seen from a site near the entry road. The offices are at the left with the mill warehouse in the foreground. The conveyor at left center carrys mine concentrates up the hill from the crusher. In the background are the dry rock storage building and mill tailings piles. Since the beginning of mining operations in 1962, seven and three-quarter million tons of ore and fifteen million tons of waste have been removed from the open pit which now measures about 1400 x 1800 feet at its widest points. The lowest operating level is at an elevation of 726 feet about 325 feet below the original surface. Figure (2) shows the open pit looking toward the west end. The main haul road can be seen along the side of the pit. A shovel is operating at the bottom of the pit while a front end loader on the level above provides ore for blending. In the background are rock dumps for waste stripping. The company markets an annual production of 30-35,000 tons of chrysotile fibre in groups 4 through 7, under the Mother Lode Brand

The reactivity of a porous solid is a strong function of its pore structure (porosity, pore surface area and pore size distribution). It follows that reactivity could be altered by altering pore structure; one way to achieve this is by chemical vapor infiltration whereby a gaseous species is reacted in the porous solid to produce a solid. Experiments were carried out in which the pore structures of various carbons were modified by cracking methane within the pores; oxidation rates of the carbons were then measured for both infiltrated and original samples. For coke it was found that two indices of coke performance used in the steel industry (CRI and CSR) can be greatly improved following a small amount of infiltration. Infiltration/oxidation results are interpreted in terms of measured pore structure changes.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated prospects and mineralized areas in and adjacent to the Indian Pass and Picacho Peak study areas in 1983 and 1984. The Indian Pass study area contains 33,640 acres and the Picacho Peak study area contains 5,450 acres. The study areas are located in the southeast corner of California and are underlain by Precambrian gneiss, Pre-Tertiary metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, and Tertiary volcanic and non-marine clastic rocks. Low-grade gold-silver resources may be present in hydrothermally altered gneiss in the upper plate and altered schist in the lower plate of the Chocolate Mountain thrust fault. The thrust fault is exposed in the study areas for about 3.5 miles west and 5 miles east of Indian Pass. Mineralized zones in the thrust plates were not discovered until 1983. Earlier prospecting explored areas containing minor copper carbonate occurrences in schist and sedimentary and volcanic rocks that are younger than the thrust. Twenty-three mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences inside the study areas and fourteen outs; de were examined for this study. These surficial copper occurrences have been prospected extensively in the study areas; large areas have been scraped, pitted, and trenched by bulldozers. However, they appear to be of limited economic significance. Slightly mineralized zones are in the northwest part of the Indian Pass study area where granite contacts sedimentary and volcanic rocks.

A series of batch roasting tests was performed on minus 1/2 inch gold bearing refractory samples from the Gold Acres deposit, and 67 select particles were polished and the sulfide alterations were examined microscopically. The suite of specimens represents two hour batch roast treatments at 600°C, 700°C, 725°C, 750°c, 800°C, and 900°C. Auriferous pyrites were found to alter sequencially to pyrrhotite, magnetite and finally to hematite. It was found that the decrease in cyanidation extraction with high temperature roasting is likely due to the increas ing stability of magnetite and more crystalline hematite, and the decrease in porosity with these phases which occlude the gold. Gold has been noted to occur very early in the mineralizing sequence, with gold being found in quartz and in clay/carbonate rock matrix. No gold was found in the two pyrite phases, but numerous gold grains were found in pyrrhotite after pyrite and in subsequent iron oxides. Gold mineralization had apparently ended by the time base metals were introduced into the deposit.

The magnetic reflux classifier, which utilizes the combined effects of magnetic fields and a hindered settling classifier, is a new tool for determining the quantity and quality of middlings in fine-sized magnetite concentrates. Results are given for processing a typical taconite ore, and a sketch of the apparatus is included. IN examining magnetite ores and beneficiated products it often becomes necessary to make critical studies of the amount of grinding necessary to produce the desired degree of magnetite liberation. In the past this has been accomplished by laboratory heavy-liquid tests, which provide a method for selectively removing middling particles and free magnetite from various-sized fractions. Examination of the various products under the microscope results in fairly accurate determination of the degree of liberation. The method is quite efficient on sizes coarser than 325 mesh. Thus the heavy-liquid method of middling separation was satisfactory until the advent of present day magnetic taconite studies. When magnetite concentrates ranging from 70 to 100 pct —325 mesh are studied it becomes apparent that older methods of determining liberation size are not satisfactory and that there is need for a new method. For example, some of the low-grade magnetite ores of the Wisconsin and Michigan iron ranges require grinding to 100 pct —325 mesh to produce a magnetic concentrate containing less than 12 pct silica. Examination of concentrates from such ores often reveals that many of the middling particles consist of only very minor proportions of iron mineral. Thus it becomes important to be able to determine the degree of grinding necessary not only for complete liberation, but also for liberation of only 80, 85, or 90 pct of the total iron mineral content. Actually, complete liberation is never attained, but is often used to designate that degree of liberation necessary for production of high-grade concentrates. A rougher concentrate, produced after elimination of a coarse-sized tailing, can usually be subjected to a second grinding stage and concentrated into a higher grade product than could be produced from the same crude ore with one stage of grinding resulting in the same overall size reduction. This fact adds to the importance of being able to determine partial degrees of liberation on any magnetite ore. Standard laboratory methods such as heavy-liquid separation, microscopic grain counts, Davis tube magnetic separation, magnetic flocculation, classification, flotation, and others often are not applicable, or are prohibitive because of time requirements when large numbers of fine-sized magnetite samples are investigated. The Davis tube magnetic separator is an efficient tool to use in rejecting the non-magnetic mineral particles from an ore sample. The middlings discarded by the tube separator usually are so low in iron content that they can be considered relatively unimportant in liberation studies. This condition is caused by the extremely high flux density used in the Davis tube. This flux density ranges from four to eight times the flux density produced by most of the powerful commercial machines in use today. Thus the problem resolves itself into a search for a method of selectively removing middlings from Davis tube magnetic concentrates which will be both rapid and efficient. Those methods showing most promise in the development of a process for isolating middlings from extremely fine-sized magnetic concentrates were flotation and magnetic flocculation. The use of flotation to remove middlings from magnetic concentrates is reported in the literature.'.' The flotation process is effective in removing middlings from a magnetite concentrate, but physical entrapment of fine-sized free magnetite in the silica-bearing froth is an undesirable feature. The flotation method of removing middlings requires time, effort, and precise control of many variables, and does not meet the required degree of middling isolation. Magnetic Flocculation Magnetic flocculation has long been resorted to"-" in efforts to upgrade magnetite concentrates. One of the new magnetic taconite plants now under construction on the Mesabi Range includes magnetic flocculation in the flowsheet' as an accessory process to remove high-silica middlings and free silica which has been mechanically entrapped in magnetite flocs. The use of magnetic flocculation as a laboratory method of making precise separation of middlings was further investigated, since it offered a rapid, simple method of accomplishing the desired result. Magnetic flocculation involves the subjection of a magnetic concentrate to a strong magnetic field, passing the concentrate in a highly flocculated condition to a hydroseparator or other classifiers of various types, and removing free silica and middlings as overflow products. Among petroleum refinery employees and officials throughout the United States there has been marked effort to reduce accident frequency and severity. For the interest and benefit of refineries both in Louisiana and in other petroleum-refining States it has been possible to obtain from five refineries, representing 70 per cent of the production of Louisiana, tae accident experience for the past 3 to 6 years. The companies concerned have requested that their names be not used. For tide reason the four plants listed and discussed are designated as refineries A, E, C, and D. The size of the plant as regards largest to smallest number of employees is indicated by the alphabetical order.

This report presents a method of utilizing the Coulomb strength criteria for estimating the strength and stability of pillars and pit slopes containing planes of weakness. It is assumed that the Coulomb theory, as a special case of the Mohr envelope, is a satisfactory first approximation of failure in uniaxial compression or triaxial loading with low lateral loads. Accepting this assumption for brittle materials, an expression for the strength decrease of rock pillars containing a plane of weakness or fracture at any angle of orientation is derived. As few as six samples (three solid cores and three fractured cores at a failure-oriented angle) are required for testing uniaxially and triaxially to statistically determine the coefficients of friction and the shear strengths of both the solid rock and the fracture plane and the range of failure angles of the fracture plane. Interpretation of the data shows that the mean normal stress and maximum shear stress technique of analyzing the data is superior for solid core and that shear and normal stress values using angles of failure should be used for fractured specimens with failure-oriented angles. Plots of either the strength or strength ratios against fracture angles obtained from oriented drill core samples give a useful first approximation of strength decrease due to fracture. Using the same test conditions for both fractured and unfractured material increases the validity of the tests.

The potential application of fluidized beds in several sectors of the ferroalloy industry is promising. They can be used in the direct reduction of iron ores to produce a feed for steelmaking, in the reduction of manganese dioxide to produce a lesser oxide for feeding to smelters, in the preheating of chromite for the production of ferrochrome, and in the calcining and pre-reduction of nickel laterites for the production of ferronickel. This paper discusses the potential of fluidized beds in theses processes and highlights the advantages of the technology over other technologies, such as rotary kilns. Two primary advantages?(1) that fluidized beds can treat fine materials and (2) that fluidized beds can be integrated with smelters in a way that allows for more efficient use of energy?may well see the technology gain prominence as more deposits of lower grade are mined and industries strive to use their resources more efficiently. In discussing the potential of the technology in the ferroalloy industry, this paper focuses on the application of fluidized beds in the smelting of chromite, nickel laterites, and manganese ores. Central to the successful operation of this technology is a knowledge of how particle properties influence the behaviour and design of fluidized beds.
