"A mechanistic model for tumbling mills was developed during PhD studies at the JKMRC. The concept was presented at the IMPC of 2014, followed by progress in a sub-process of the model presented at the IMPC of 2016. Additionally, a number of papers on the sub-models and breakage function have been published. This paper provides a consolidated summary of the outcomes and status of the model. The overall model structure is presented along with the sub-models such as appearance functions, breakage rate functions, energy distribution, transport, and multicomponent grinding interaction model. The strengths and capabilities of the model structure as achieved to date are presented. The gaps in knowledge and sub-processes are also presented, providing a guide to the areas that require further research and development. It is proposed that the approach developed in this paper provides a structure that can accommodate future mechanistic, dynamic mill model evolution that can incorporate the latest research outcomes and provide a platform to test modelling improvements. This can assist in substantially improving the predictive mill modelling capability in the industry, the importance of which should not be underestimated for this workhorse of mineral processing.INTRODUCTION Grinding is almost the largest single energy-consuming process in the mineral processing industry, which was estimated that about 0.2% of global, and 1.3% of Australia’s electricity is consumed by comminution of gold and copper ores (Ballantyne and Powell, 2014). Everyone forms his own mental picture when the subject of copper is mentioned. To an architect, copper is a warm, enduring metal with a quiet beauty; to the historian, man's first metal; to the product engineer, the best electrical and thermal conductor of all commercial metals; to the investor, a volatile stock; to the speculator, the daily price quotation; to those in the mining industry, the challenge of producing copper for rising needs in the face of rising costs and lower grades of ore. At this meeting, we will look upon copper as a key raw material in industry, in national defense, in technology, in world trade, and as a principal commodity in the economies of several developing countries. As miners, and most of us here are miners, we are prone to view our role as suppliers of copper. We locate, mine, smelt and refine the metal. In the complexities of today's world, however, following a period of the longest domestic copper strike in history which caused critical world-wide shortages and widely fluctuating prices; it becomes necessary for all of us to concern ourselves with the whole spectrum of copper affairs -"from mine to consumer " But first we need to look at the miner's side of the picture -- capacity and production. We will examine these functions in terms of the whole world -- not simply the free world. Nature did not endow all regions of the earth equally, and copper in world trade has a way of ignoring political boundaries. Science and technology, as well, know no national boundaries. It is said that the "Engineering & Mining Journal" has as many readers in the Communist World as in the Free World. Nor is this a one-way street. We presently have available to us in the. U.S., cover-to-cover translations of many Communist World mining and metallurgical journals.

"While the National Academy of Sciences has stated that gravimetric sampling technology for compliance purposes is adequate, research into various aspects of respirable dust control require data on many other parameters of airborne dust. These, in turn, have created the need to use many instruments, other than personal gravimetric samplers, in mi ne environments for dust measurement. There is a need to evaluate the performance of these instruments under conditions of potential use.As part of research in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, cascade impactors, gravimetric personal samplers and gravimetric samplers collecting dust using isokinetic sampling principles were employed for dust measurements under identical conditions in a mine airway. During the course of the experiments, 8-stage cascade impactors and gravimetric samplers drawing air isokinetically were located in the center of a mine airway at various stations. Two types of data were examined - concentration of dust and size distribution of the dust collected in the samplers. The data show that the amount of dust collected by an impactor is less than half the amount collected isokinetically. The size distributions of the dusts collected from the two instruments, though comparable, show a consistent difference in median diameters. The cause for this bias is examined.The paper presents and discusses the results of the tests, including the concentrations and size distributions obtained from the two instruments for different experimental conditions. There is a need to document the performance of various dust measuring devices in mine airflow conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe sampling of airborne dust in mines can be done for several purposes. Traditionally, dust sampling has been restricted to the gravimetric measurement of airborne respirable dust to comply with the regulations governing the mining industry. Instruments such as the MRE gravimetric sampler, and personal gravimetric samplers that have collection characteristics similar to the human respiratory system have been in use for the last two decades. Presently available instrumentation for the purpose of regulation have been considered adequate by the Committee on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines (National Academy of Sciences, 1980),"

Small tonnage ore bodies can be developed at a profit on a short life basis. Such is the case of the Bardon Mine in. the Big Indian Mining District in San Juan County. Utah. Faced with a small initial tonnage of high grade uranium ore, the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation Engineers developed some new ideas for sinking the shaft and planned extraction to warrant the capital risk to mine a limited reserve. The Bardon Mine is located fifty miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the south end of the Big Indian Mining -district. Shattuck Denn Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation, manages and operates the property under an operating agreement with Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc. of. Oklahoma City. Oklahoma, and Anderson Development Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Based. on Kerr-McGee drilling., a tabular ore body about 350 feet long by 250 feet wide with an average thickness in excess of seven feet was indicated.- The ore body strikes easterly-westerly and dips from nine to twelve degrees to the south. Uraninite is the dominant uranium ore mineral associated with vanadium. The ore occurs in an arkosic conglomeratic sandstone with some interfingering of mudstone and shale in the Mossback member of the Chinle formation in contact with the underlying Cutler formation. The ore horizon is overlain with 40 to 60 feet of mudstone and shale. Fortunately, the back. immediately over the ore is a reasonable competent shaley sandstone which has made a fairly good. environment for roof bolting.

"Canada became the world's largest uranium producer in 1984. That leadership position is likely to be maintained for many years into the future because of a firm production base, many undeveloped known deposits with commercial promise, and a large geologicalpotential for new discoveries.There are some uncertainties on the horizon, principally because of restrictive actions in process within the U.S.A., which are aimed at preserving a deteriorating domestic uranium industry. Should such actions result in import restrictions, for example, there would be a negative effect on foreign producers at least in the short term. Canada may avoid such difficulties under a tentative U.S.-Canada free-trade agreement where restrictions on the import of Canadian uranium into the United States would be eliminated. Over the longer term, demand for Canada's uranium resources will grow because of the foreseen growth in the world's installed nuclear power capacity. IntroductionSince the phenomenon of nuclear fission was discovered in 1938, the utilization of uranium has grown substantially. Initially, the principal use for uranium was in the production of nuclear weapons. However, once civilian nuclear power reactors began to be built in the 1950s, an increasing fraction of uranium output was directed to the production of fuel elements for use in electricity generating stations.The cumulative uranium production by those countries in the World Outside Centrally-Planned-Economies Areas, WOCA, during the period 1938 to 1985 exceeded 800 000 tonnes of uranium. Some 60% of that was mined in the United States and Canada, as indicated in Figure 1. In 1986, nearly 80% of WOCA output came from five countries, Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, and Namibia, as indicated in Table 1 and illustrated in Figure 2.During the past decade the world annual consumption of nuclear energy has more than tripled (Fig. 3). As of December 31, 1986, the world total of nuclear power reactors had reached 394 with a total net capacity of 270 GWe. The thermal output from nuclear power plants in 1985 exceeded 60% of the energy contained in all of the oil produced that year in the Middle East. Thus, nuclear power has already become an important component in the world energy supply picture."

"The pure mineral chromite, FeO.Cr203, consists of ferrous and chromic oxides, chemically united in equal molecular proportions. Unfortunately, pure chromite as defined above appears to be a rare exception. In most chrome ores the mineral may be considered a combination of spinel, MgO.Al203, and chromite, with the latter predominating. The ratios between the four common constituents Fe0, Mg0, Cr203 and A203 vary greatly, and other minor constituents such as TiO2 and. Fe203 may also be present.In the mechanical concentration of chromite ores the maximum grade of concentrates that can be produced is thus limited by the composition of the chrome minerals present. Pure chromite contains 68 per cent Cr203, but the Cr203 content of the chrome minerals in commercial ores varies between 45 and 60 per cent and the average is not far from 55 per cent.Chromite is usually associated with serpentine. Other silicates, quartz, dolomite, magnetite, ilmenite and other iron Minerals are frequently present.The amenability of a chrome ore to concentration, depends upon the kind and amount of the various gangue minerals present and the amount .of crushing necessary to separate the chromite from them.A relatively small amount of chrome ore is concentrated by milling. In most cases the mine product is simply hand-sorted. Such chrome deposits as are known in the United. States can not be worked in this way on account of one or both of the following conditions: High cost of labor and finely disseminated impurities. There are, however, several deposits in the United States, Canada, and Alaska which may be able to compete with imported or by efficiently utilizing modern ore-dressing and milling methods."

THE method of making coke that has been adopted at the Kaiping and other collieries in northern China resembles, to some extent, the familiar bee-hive oven process of the United States, except that a kiln with permanent sides is used instead of a closed oven, and the products of combustion are drawn off at the bottom, In building coke-kilns in China, two circular holes, 8 ft. 6 in. in diameter at the bottom and 13 ft. in diameter at the top, are excavated in the ground, both being .connected at the bottom by a flue as shown in Fig. 1. The sides and bottom of the kiln are lined with fire-bricks, and covered with a layer of fire-clay, and a rectangular opening, 6 in. by 8 in., connects the bottom of each kiln with the main flue. Around the edge of the hole, and overlapping the lining, is a wall of fire-brick extending .2 ft. 6 in. above the level of the ground. An open space 5 ft. wide is left in this wall, through which the coal is carried into the kiln and the resultant coke removed. This space, of course, is bricked up during the time that the coking operation is being carried on. The wall is pierced with nine flue-openings uniformly placed around the circumference, each intervening space in the wall being strengthened with a brick buttress, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The floor of the kiln, as well as the main flue, is lined with fire-brick. Before charging the coal, it is first placed in shallow bamboo sieves, 2 ft. in diameter, and immersed in a trough 10 ft. long, and 3 ft. wide, fed with pit-water; in which it is washed by hand. Fig. 3 shows the manner in which the washing is done. From 25 tons of good " dust" coal, 22.5 tons of washed coal are obtained. An experimental hydraulic jetting device intended to operate in a 16-in-diam borehole was designed, fabricated, and used to cut coal and simulated coal samples. This device consisted of two 0.107-in-diam nozzles that rotated in a plane perpendicuIar to a 50-inch length of high-pressure tubing. Experi¬ments were also conducted with stationary jets issuing from a single 0.142-in-diam nozzle. Numerous experiments were performed using systematic variations of jet parameters coupled with assessments of cutting rates. These Bureau of Mines tests showed that when operated at 4,000 psi pressure and a 40-gpm flow rate (1) the device can fragment coal up to a distance of 8 feet from the nozzle, (2) 4,000-psi jets cut more effectively than lower pressure jets with the same nozzle diameter, (3) stationary jets do not cut as effectively as moving jets, (4) interkerf breaking occurs when the kerf spacing is less than 2 inches, and (5) if the kerfs are spaced <1/2 inch, the jet is deflected and thereby reduces cutting effectiveness.

An ongoing research program at the Spokane Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is directed toward investigating drilling parameters (thrust, torque, penetration rate, and drill revolutions) during the drilling of roof bolt holes. A system that measures these drilling parameters calculates the specific energy of drilling, and determines drill bit position has been developed by the Bureau and mounted on a roof bolting/drilling machine, through the use of a microcomputer, critical drilling parameters can be immediately interpreted and analyzed. This makes it possible to inform the operator of hazardous roof conditions. Initial results of this program are presented here.

Neste trabalho, foi desenvolvido um modelo de elementos finitos para simular o primeiro passe da laminação a quente do trem acabador de tiras de aço C-Mn. O comportamento desse aço é definido por equações constitutivas que descrevem os mecanismos de encruamento e recristalização acoplados aos campos de tensões, deformações e temperatura. Foi implementada uma sub-rotina em linguagem FORTRAN disponível no programa de elementos finitos ABAQUS/Standard. O modelo foi estabelecido no estado plano de deformação por meio de elementos finitos com acoplamento dos campos de temperatura e deformação para o cilindro de trabalho e tira. As dimensões e condições de processo foram obtidas a partir de dados industriais do laminador de tiras a quente da CSN. O modelo prevê as distribuições de temperaturas e valor de carga de laminação em boa concordância com as medidas industriais. Os resultados do modelo evidenciam que há ocorrência de recristalização dinâmica durante o primeiro passe e, apontam que em determinadas regiões da tira a fração recristalizada dinamicamente chega a 100%. A análise de sensibilidade dos parâmetros do modelo foi feita para determinar o seu impacto nos resultados das simulações, notadamente na força de laminação e no tamanho de grão austenítico final.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The Copper Range Company&apos;s mining properties are located in the Upper Penisula of Michigan. (Fig.). Early work indicated the presence of copper ore in a bedded deposit, confined to the base of the Upper Keweenawan Nonesuch shale, and exploitation of this deposit on a portion of the Company&apos;s property was undertaken by White Pine Copper Company. Diamond drilling of the White Pine orebody indicated that a major fault pattern terminated the values to the South-west. Further drilling Southwest of the fault zone proved a downward displacement of the ore bearing horizon some 1,500 feet and a lateral displacement of approximately 4,000 feet; and in this area an ore deposit was outlined in a large asymmetrical syncline locally plunging to the South-west. Use of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) for pressure tunnel liners is gaining popularity with contractors, engineers, and owners. This paper presents loading considerations and a beam-spring computer model approach to tunnel liner analysis, together with ultimate strength (US) and service load (SL) procedures for liner design. The US procedure is best suited to check for adequate liner strength under extreme loading conditions. The SL procedure, based on conventional pipeline design practice, is considered more appropriate when addressing crack control and serviceability under normal working load conditions. Other design and construction considerations are discussed and a design example is presented.

In the article "Concentration of Oil Shale,"(1) Dr. N. Arbiter stated, "One of the major factors in the delayed utilization of oil shale as an energy raw material is the low grade or content of hydrocarbon (kerogen) in oil shale as compared with coal and even more so to the liquid and gaseous fuels. " When the availability of high-grade deposits decreased, mineral industries started adopting prebeneficiation procedures for the low-grade deposits. This practice, which is becoming standard in these other industries, has been largely overlooked by the oil shale industry in its drive to produce oil from oil shale. If a major portion of this mineral matter can be removed, there can be potentially large savings in the capital and operating costs of oil shale retorts. Moreover, the environmental impact, associated with recovering the shale oil, could be reduced considerably. In 1980 Roberts & Schaefer Resource Service (RSRS) completed successfully the first set of demonstration runs with a 20-ton oil shale sample from Cathedral Bluffs (C-b tract), Colorado. This relatively low grade (~12 gpt oil content) oil shale was beneficiated applying the Dutch State Mines Heavy Medium Cyclone process. (2)

Recent research has shown that froth flotation is not effective at treating fine coals (-28 mesh) containing a large portion of middling particles. Due to their relatively large density differences, middling particles can be separated more efficiently using gravity-based processes. The ability of gravity separators to treat fine particles has been limited by the lack of particle inertia relative to the surface drag forces. However, particle inertia can be enhanced by the application of a centrifugal field. A commercial-scale centrifugal Falcon concentrator capable of treating a mass flow rate of greater than 1 tph continuously has been used to evaluate its feasibility for treating fine coal as an alternative to froth flotation. Tests conducted on a -28 mesh fine coal circuit feed have found the Falcon concentrator to be very effective at cleaning the 28 x 325 mesh size fraction. For an Illinois No. 5 coal sample, the ash content was reduced in the 100 x 325 mesh size fraction from about 18% to 8% while achieving a high combustible recovery value of nearly 97%. In addition, the total sulfur content was substantially decreased from 2.6% to 1.7%. The effects of the critical operating parameters on separation performance have been studied and their values optimized.

The major threat to the sustainability of Aluminium Industry is its significant contribution to global warming by way of generation of non eco-friendly gases during its production cycle from Bauxite to the finished product. Though reduction measures are taken in control and effective recovery of values from pot room gases, efforts in use of environment friendly additives in the final products production line is warranted. In this line, the present paper describes our efforts in the use of a new generation refining flux which apart from helping in effective removal of alkali metals, reduction in inclusions and ensure a better metal cleanliness shall also aide in reduction of obnoxious gases generated during the metal refining process prior to casting. The aim of the current work was to reconcile the practical results with the old generation fluxes used. Further improvements to bring in a better metal cleanliness will also be discussed.

Teck&apos;s approach in eastern Canada is designed to fulfill corporate objectives while recognizing certain unique parameters for exploration in the area. The elements of this approach include clearly defined objectives, technical considerations and personnel policies, all of which are equally important. The goal is a significant discovery before the mid-1990s and the company is confident that this target will be achieved.

Experience from Australia had identified what is referred to as nonconventional surface subsidence behavior. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence,” and far-field horizontal movements, occurring even beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behavior recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam, leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900 ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 to 720 ft. Investigations, including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program, found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and farfield horizontal movements may have occurred, resulting from the adjacent mining. Besides discussing the phenomenon of nonconventional subsidence behavior and the Ryerson State Park case study, this paper includes an assessment of the mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioral mechanisms.

Ontario, one of the richest mining districts in the world, is a natural storehouse for much of the earth&apos;s fresh water supply. Covering over 344,000 square miles, the surface of this Canadian Province is dotted with 250,000 fresh water lakes and is laced with uncounted thousands of fresh water rivers and streams. The southern portion of the Province, for the most part, is flat or lazily rolling farmland. This is where most of the people in Ontario live. Although it is not a major mining area, southern Ontario does possess important deposits of salt, oil, gas and gypsum. Most of these deposits are being actively worked. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, lies deep in the southern region. Here the climate is mild and the winters are short. The total annual precipitation consists of 27 inches of rain and 65 inches of snow. Most of the major mining companies that do business in Canada have made Toronto their Canadian headquarters. There are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is money. Toronto is the gathering place of many well- known financial institutions. The second is access. Toronto lies within a few hundred miles of some of the most spectacular mining enterprises that exist in the world.
