Roof falls are one of the leading ground control problems that adversely influence productivity and worker safety in underground mines, construction sites, and nuclear waste repositories. To control roof stability problems, the operator needs to have practical methods for measuring changes in strata conditions and criteria for defining the timing of secondary support installation. The objective of this study was to develop measurement techniques and criteria for assessing roof conditions at the mining face. An integrated rock deformation and tomographic imaging method was developed and applied at two sites in a western U.S. trona mine. It was shown that rock damage occurred at a deformation of 30 to 60 mm (1.2 to 2.4 in) (2 to 4 pct strain) and was associated with a significant (16 pct) reduction in wave velocity. Thus, supplementary support may be installed when there is a measured change in wave velocity of at least 16 pct. Tomographic measurements can be obtained in rocks rapidly, thus providing a powerful tool for analyzing growth of failure and for installing supplementary support systems in a timely manner.

Established in the 60-ies, the Zlatna Panega quarry is a cement raw materials quarry supplying 95% of the needs of the Zlatna Panega Cement Plant with limestone, marl and other silica-aluminates. The two major types of raw materials are formed by accordingly dipping strata of Upper Jurassic limestones and lower Cretaceous marls. Between them there is a ?transition-zone? or ?contact-zone? of a high-silica content layer, about 5-m thick, defined as ?flint? by investigations including spot sampling throughout the quarry. For many years this ?contact-zone? layer was neglected due its negligible thickness. Further, with the increasing demand on the quality of the raw materials feed to the Plant and the focus on variability of the chemical and mineralogical components, it was decided not to mine any of the parts of the quarry contaminated by this material, for about three years. The latter had an impact on the availability of operating benches that could result in a substantial decrease in the total recoverable re-serves of Zlatna Panega, particularly with respect to marls. There were considerations for resorting to a partial, selective excavation of the quarry pit with a reduced lifetime for the lime-stones and re-opening of an other (currently in-active) marl quarry at a distance of 6 Km from the Plant. The Quarry Team of the Zlatna Panega quarry was assigned to study the problem. The ?contact? layer was duly confirmed with systematic geological (including mineralogy) studies, statistical analysis of available data, surface sampling and shallow exploration drills, resulted into distinguishing a third type of reserves and their credible subsurface delineation by means of geological 3-D modeling and quarry design. A new quarry design was finally elaborated with a view of providing flexibility in mining, utilization of the total volume of all available reserves and maximizing the mine life of Zlatna Panega quarry. An industrial test took place in December 2005, by using the contaminated parts of the quarry (co-mining of the ?contact-zone? materials) at a contribution of 15-20% in the raw materials mix, as dictated by their contribution in the total recoverable resources of the quarry. The purpose was to investigate the viability of this solution ? in line with improved quarry planning ? without compromising the quality of cement production and the efficiency of Plant Operations. "To obtain large-sized billets with fine grains and homogeneous elements distribution, uniform direct chill (UDC) casting process, based on annular electromagnetic stirring coupling with intercooling, was employed to produce 7055 alloy billets with a size of F584 mm in this study. The results indicated that there were the coupled effects of annular electromagnetic stirring and intercooling on grain refinement and element homogenization, and also the billets produced by the UDC casting process showed excellent hot workability in comparison to the normal direct chill casting process.INTRODUCTION The high solute 7055 aluminium alloy has a wonderful combination of high specific strength and hardness, good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and high fracture toughness, which is very useful in aerospace application (Yan et al., 2013; Mondal & Mukhopadhyay, 2005). The production of large-sized 7055 alloy billets with high quality is the basic condition for the subsequent application of 7055 alloy to the aircraft. Inhomogeneous microstructures and performances of 7055 billets result from the high alloying element content and the inhomogeneous cooling condition in different regions of billets during the conventional direct chill casting (Paramatmuni et al., 2004; Lalpoor et al., 2011), which will bring bad influence to processing property, functional performance and utilization rate of materials. To alleviate segregation and obtain fine and uniform grains, some effective treatment methods were proposed including electromagnetic stirring (EMS) (Vives, 1989), ultrasonic vibrating (Zhang et al., 2011) and melt conditioning (Fan et al., 2013), on the melt to obtain fine and uniform grains. However, these methods could not effectively decrease the large temperature difference between central and periphery parts of the billet, because the solidification mainly depends on outside cooling including mould cooling and water spraying cooling. To change the heat extraction pattern of the billet functioned solely from the outer surface, based on annular electromagnetic stirring (A-EMS) invented by Xu et al. (2010), Luo et al. (2017) proposed uniform direct chill (UDC) casting coupling A-EMS with intercooling in the direct chill (DC) casting process. An in-mold cooler was inserted to the melt sump, and thus the alloy melt temperature and concentration at solidification front become more uniform."

THE diffusion of magnesium and silicon from the core into the high-purity coating of Alclad sheet is important commercially, and led to the use of a duplex product for the study of diffusion by means of spectro-graphic analysis of successive layers. It has been found that in the duplex materials the diffusion of magne-sium from an undersaturated aluminum-magnesium alloy into its high-purity aluminum coating is approximately of the same order of magnitude as the diffusion of silicon from a saturated aluminum-silicon alloy into its high-purity aluminum coating. However, if magnesium and silicon are both present in the alloy in the ratio of Mg2Si they appear to diffuse in the approximate ratio of this compound. Finally, if the alloy contains silicon in excess of the amount required by magnesium silicide, the amount of diffused silicon in the high-purity aluminum coating will also be in excess. The interdiffusion of metals in the solid state is of both scientific and technical interest, because it is helpful in the study of the alloy structure and in the solution of problems pertaining to the strength and surface condition of the fabricated product. W. C. Roberts-Austen1 carried out the first quantitative determination of the coefficient of diffusion of gold into lead. This classical experiment was followed by a series of investigations on the diffusion of metals and nonmetals in iron and steel and in nonferrous metals and alloys. Recently the diffusion of copper in coated strong aluminum alloys was investigated by A. Burkhardt2. This appeared to be the first published investigation on the diffusion of metals into aluminum.

The basic compression-yield concept of roof support for mine roadways requires that the mine roof be placed in a state of compressive stress. The compressive stress may be achieved using a support system such as an entry truss or other specialty truss device. Furthermore, the roof must be allowed to yield, but with great resistance when abutment loads are placed on the roadway. The resisted yielding may be provided using a new yieldable steel prop, known by the trade name, YIPP~. The yieldable steel prop can allow as much as 1.5 m[5 ft] of yield, or up to approximately 40% of the opening height, while providing a resistance in excess of 60 mt[66st]. More than fifteen mining operations including coal, trona and hard rock mines have field tested the YIPPI . Present results indicate that the yieldable prop provides a cost-effective alternative to wood cribs, concrete cribs, hydraulic props and other steel prop supports. The paper describes the YIPPI including its unique principle of operation, its applications and actual field performance.

ackleg rock drills are widely used in the mining industry and are known to generate high levels of hand-arm vibration which contribute to the development of the hand-arm vibration syndrome for exposed miners.1-3 To reduce the vibration levels, a prototype of an antivibration handle was developed as part of a previous study.4 To provide some bench marking for this handle prototype and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. As the current ISO 8662 series of standards could not apply directly to this type of tool, there was a need to design and validate a test bench to evaluate the vibration emission values of jackleg drills, while taking into account the conditions specific to the operation of this type of tool. Methods A test bench including an energy absorber, was developed for testing jackleg drills based on the ISO 8662-3 standard 5. The energy absorber was bolted to a 3300 kg concrete block to ensure tool stability. A pictorial view of the device is given in Figure 1. For validation purposes, acceleration measurements at the handle of a conventional jackleg drill were taken simultaneously along the three axes (xh, yh and zh) in an underground rock drilling operation as well as on the test bench. The handle accelerations were measured for three different jackleg angles (13º, 28º and 43º) determined with respect to the floor. Moreover, each measurement was repeated at least three times to asses the data repeatability. [ ] Results As a preliminary validation of the test bench, Figure 2 provides a comparison of the frequency weighted rms acceleration spectrum measured along the zh-axis, for both underground drilling and operation on the test bench (28º jackleg angle in both cases). It is shown that the vibration measured on the handle of a jackleg drill operating on the test bench is representative of that recorded during typical rock drilling operations, despite the fact that some harmonics of the percussion frequencies are generated with a higher amplitude on the test bench. Geological information plays a significant, cost effective role, in the Mt Whaleback iron ore mining operations. The geology and structure are complex. Good communication between the Mine Planning Production Scheduling and Quality Control Sections is the key to utilisation of geological information to its full potential.Drilling and pit face mapping are the two basic sources of detailed data sets which are processed to prepare up to date geological cross sections and benchwise geological plans. This information is used directly for the blast pattern design and production scheduling. Physical ore type estimation is also undertaken. Orebody models are generated from the geological information.

"During the early summer of 1989, Ontario Hydro removed a concrete portion of the North Channel Dam at Crystal Falls Generating Station by blasting and excavating in marine conditions. Because of the severity of underwater blasting and because the site was in close proximity to the replacement dam, there was concern that hydraulic shock waves generated by the detonation could damage either the new dam or its control structures. This paper examines the data associated with the hydraulic shock waves generated by underwater blasting, and studies the effectiveness of an air curtain in reducing the peak pressures. In previous trials using the air curtain technique, a rule-of-thumb factor was used to estimate that only 10% of the original pressure pulse would propagate across the air curtain. However, this value had little basis in theory. A theoretical formulation of the problem by Karney in 1989 indicated a provisional value of 0.18 for this factor, but was heavily dependent on confirmation from in-field testing. Data provided by Ontario Hydro from an actual blasting procedure indicate that a more conservative value of 0.32 may be more appropriate. Thus.although the air curtain did provide considerable reduction of peak pressures, the data at Crystal Falls indicates its performance was below the anticipated level. However, due to problems with the instrumentation and some inconsistencies in the resulting data. it is recommended that this value be further refined as additional data become available."

"Mineral floatability is a function of mineral properties such as size, liberation, shape, surface composition, reagent coverage on the surface, level of oxidation on the surface, etc.; pulp chemistry: Eh, pH, temperature, DO, reagent type, etc. and hydrodynamic conditions: turbulence, gas dispersion, D32, etc. The biggest challenge with predicting the floatability of an ore is finding a measurement method that would take into account the effect of all of the variables on the floatability of the minerals. The particle-bubble attachment time measurement is considered as an alternative way to predict the floatability of minerals instead of using expensive and time consuming flotation tests because it takes into considerations both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters present in the froth flotation. The existing particle-bubble attachment time method is suitable for studying some significant flotation variables such as pH, temperature, particle size, reagent type and concentration. Nevertheless, measuring the attachment time as a function of collector coverage or surface oxidation is much more challenging. This paper introduces a new induction timer designed to measure the effect of galvanic interaction on the attachment time of particles. The new setup employs an array of needles to create 6 bubbles with the average size of 2.1 mm. Imaging system is used to set the initial distance between the particle bed and the array of bubbles. The attached particles are collected and sent for further analysis. One of the main benefits of the new experimental setup is that the attached particles can be physically separated from the unattached particles therefore many of the particle properties can be analysed and evaluated.INTRODUCTIONSchumann (1942), and Tomlinson and Fleming (1963) proposed that the flotation rate constant is dependent on four probabilities: particle-bubble collision (PC), particle-bubble attachment (PA), particlebubble aggregate stability in turbulent environment (PE), and particle-bubble aggregate stability in froth phase (PF). Any change in any of these probabilities will affect the overall flotation rate constant. All of the above-introduced probabilities are influenced by stream- variables and mechanical variables but their extent of influence vary. The stream variables are particle properties that have been shown to affect flotation rate constant such as size, shape, liberation, mineralogical composition, reagent surface coverage, surface oxidation, etc. The mechanical variables are the direct and indirect properties of the flotation unit affecting flotation rate constant such as cell and impeller geometry, air rate, impeller speed, air holdup, bubble size, residence time, hydrodynamics, froth depth, etc. For instance, the probability of collision is affected by many mechanical variables (bubble size, hydrodynamics, bubbles holdup etc.) but only one stream variable (particle size) has a major effect on it. On the other hand the probability of attachment is affected by much more stream variables: particle size, shape, liberation, surface composition, particle surface oxidation and collector coverage, Eh, pH, etc."

Ore in pillars constitutes a significant proportion of the ore reserve at PasmincoÆs Broken Hill Mine. Many of these pillars are narrow (5 -6 m) and high (16 û 35 m) vertical blocks. High-grade ore has been left between primary horizontal cut and fill stopes. These stopes were mined from the late-1960s until the early-1980s. Fill material is a variety of hydraulically stowed sand, sand-cement, and remnant timber support. Many pillar cut-throughs were made between the old stopes. In order to gain access for the current pillar recovery operations, it has been necessary to develop pillar drill drives through, and adjacent to, the hydraulic filled stopes. Whilst long hole recovery of vertical pillars is not new, some notable successes using innovative ideas have been achieved during 1997. These innovations include:The use of steel mesh reinforcing in shotcrete when mining through, or adjacent to, hydraulic fill. Construction of steel sets to support vent rises and haulage ways encountered in the cut-throughs. The use of ground movement monitoring equipment. Survey lasers with chain droppers and convergence monitors were installed in the 18 Pillar to detect any movement of the pillar block and decrease risk to personnel. The development of a three-dimensional computer model of primary stoping, using Vulcan software, to assist in the design of pillars. Maximisation of recovery using different drilling and firing practices.

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. Conflict is commonly considered in a two-party sense, but this can deeply over-simplify the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

The Birmingham district, Alabama, is distinctive in the proximity to one another of its deposits of iron ore, coal and flux. These three basic requisites for the making of iron and steel are found within a radius of 10 miles. Both dolomite and limestone are produced, the former for blast-furnace flux and the latter for basic open-hearth operations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, operates a limestone mine at Muscoda, near Bessemer, 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, served by its own railroad transportation system. The mine has a capacity of 130 tons per hour. Average analyses of a recent month's production arc as follows: Fe²zO³ SiO² Al²O³ CaCO³ MgCO³ Lump, percent............................. 0.51 0.22 98.63 0.14 Crushed and washed, per cent,................ 0.70 0.26 98.36 0.18 Lump stone, 2 1/2 to 755 in., is used in open-hearth operations at Fairfield Steel Works. Fine crushed and washed stone, 1% to 0.063 in., is calcined at the lime-burning plant and used for lime charges at the Ensley open hearths. Geology The district's deposits of hematite ore occur in the Clinton formation, and the limestone beds mined are stratigraphically 330 ft. above the ore beds worked. A cross section on the center line of the mine is shown in Fig. 1. This limestone formation, 130 ft. thick, is in the Warsaw horizon of the Lower Mississippian. It lies above 100 ft. of Fort Payne chert, which is immediately above the Clinton formation, and is composcd of layers of chert and cherty limestone, approximately 50 per cent of the material being pure chert. The chert is extremely hard, and the cost of driving raises through it is very high. Both iron ore and limestone deposits lie on the southwest limb of the Jones Valley anticline, the formations dipping from 15' to 32' to the southeast. The iron-ore seam outcrops along the crest of Red Mountain, a ridge with northeast-southwest trend rising 200 to 300 ft. above Jones and Shades valleys at the

Because of an urgent national need for manganese, the deposits in the Little Florida Mountains of Lune County N. Mex., were visited by O.H. Metzger, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 12 and 13, 1940, accompanied on the second day by S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey. After this preliminary examination, it was recommended that exploratory work be done by the Bureau of Mines on several properties in the district. An exploratory project of trenching, sampling, and core drilling was started by the Bureau of Mines in September 1940 and completed in May 1941.2/ Work was done on three properties - the Luna mine, the American group of claims, and the Manganese Valley mine. The Little Florida manganese district is situated on the eastern slope of the Little Florida Mountains about 2 miles south of U. S. Highway 80-90, 12 to 14 miles southeast of Deming, Luna County, N. Mex. The principal claims comprise the Luna Manganese, American, and Manganese Valley groups.

Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unworked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 501 s saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in production of natural iron concentrate s. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 601 s as agglomerated products and foreign ores began to dominate the U. S. market.

An engineering project was undertaken at the Cominco Alaska Red Dog Mine to determine the extent that Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill throughput could be increased by blasting differently. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center (JKMRC) blast fragmentation, jaw crusher, and SAG mill breakage models were used to relate changes in the blast design to the SAG mill performance. For optimum performance a SAG mill requires a particular size distribution; a number of large rocks to facilitate breakage by impact, as few as possible middle size rocks that become critical size, and the maximum fines which will pass quickly through an open-circuit mill. Physical constraints of drill and charging equipment size limit the extent that pattern geometry can be changed and the powder factor increased to maximize fines. However, JKMRC research had shown that it appeared possible to increase primary breakage by blasting to such an extent that SAG mill throughput could reach a plateau or even begin to decrease. Modeling was carried out on a range of blast pattern geometries and emulsion explosive blends to determine if a plateau existed and at what powder factor it would be reached. It was found that the relationship between powder factor and grinding throughput was nonlinear. Modeling was also used to compare the SAG mill throughput which could be expected from different emulsion explosive blends to determine which blends should be used in dry and wet holes to provide similar fragmentation. For heavy-ANFO mixtures, the highest modeled throughput was at a ratio of 30/70, with ratios on either side indicating lower throughput. For emulsion blends, the highest modeled throughput was at a ratio of 80/20; however, ratios from 80/20 to lOO/O were similar. Crusher product size distributions were obtained from belt cuts early in the analysis to confirm model predictions. At later stages, actual SAG mill throughput was compared to predicted. The economic benetit from the different blast designs was calculated by accounting for the reduction in recovery due to the higher throughput and the additional drilling and blasting costs. Increasing the powder factor by 150% from the 0.29kg/t {0.58lb/st] being used to 0.72kg/t { 1.44lb/st}, the maximum feasible with mine equipment, could provide a sign&ant net benefit of $3OWyr due to the increased concentrate production. However, because the relationship between throughput and recovery is affected by other factors which were not modeled, a more conservative approach was taken. The powder factor was instead increased by 50°h, providing 45% of the gain. This was possible because the relationship between powder factor and grinding throughput was nonlinear.

The application of similarity analysis derived from regional geochemical mapping data to the location of Ni-bearing intrusions was tested in southwest Finland, where a well-known nickel belt is situated. Samples of till from the vicinity of the Vammala and Kylmakoski Ni-Cu deposits, which were collected independently of the Geological Survey of Finland's regional geochemical mapping programme, were used to provide geochemical modelling data. The data consist of the aqua regia-leachable concentrations of 20 elements from the less than 0.06-mm fraction of glacial till. The variables used in the similarity analysis were selected on the basis of a factor analysis in which the method of oblique rotation was used. A hierarchical clustering of the modelling samples produced two main groups. The first group was described as the "nickel deposit environment model" and the second as the "nickel deposit location model". The data for the standardised variables were compared sample by sample with the model data by similarity analysis using the Simana program with a cos theta measure of pattern similarity. The nickel deposit environment model delineated the known Ni belt and indicated an extension to the east. The nickel deposit location model identified target areas of reasonable size with the greatest potential for Ni ores within the nickel belt

Beneficiation of the pyrite concentrate of the Kastomonu-Küre (Northern Turkey) copper ore seems to be attractive due to its high Cu, Co, and Zn contents. Pyrite concentrate were used in the experimental studies. Cu, Co, and Zn were recovered from the concentrate by the sulphatizing roasting, leaching and the precipitation using H2S. Sulphatizing roasting experiments were carried out in a rotary furnace and the optimal roasting conditions were found to be at 650°C roasting temperature and 3.0 h roasting period and addition of Na2SO4 of 3 % for the concentrate containing 0.58% Cu, 0.22% Co, and 0.04% Zn. Then, the roasted product was repeatedly leached with 10 g/L H2SO4 solution. Optimal conditions were found to be 60 oC leaching temperature, 2 h leaching period, and 30% pulp density. Leaching efficiencies for Cu and Co were over 99 %. The valuable metals in the pregnant solution were selectively precipitated by H2S as sulfides. Selective precipitation of Cu, Zn, Co was achieved by adjusting the pH and the temperature of the leach solution. Final metal recoveries of 99.20% Cu, 99.40% Co, and 95.60% Zn were attained. The precipitated sulphides are marketable products. Roasting gases with their 15% SO2 content are suitable for the production of H2SO4 and the leach residues can be integrated with the iron ore processing plant as they contain 57.50 % Fe, 17.70% gangue (SiO2, CaO, etc.), 0.04% S, and 0.06% non-ferrous metals.
