This report documents a systematic approach towards implementing an improved ensemble for the mine rescue team system that will protect against the hazards of mine rescue and recovery and will also afford improved performance through increased comfort and maneuverability, lighter burdens, and improved human engineering designs. In the first part (Task 1) the mine rescue team's protective needs were defined along with the test methods required to evaluate whether a particular piece of gear met these needs. Task 2 assessed existing gear against performance criteria and standards developed in Task 1. Task 3 consisted of the conceptual design and construction phases of the MRPE program. Special consideration was given to advanced concepts, materials, and equipment.

Two modes of collector addition techniques are applied in the column flotation for cleaning ultra fine coal. The collector can be: 1) added directly into the coal slurry through the feed system; and 2) gasified collector and transported in the gas phase through the bubbles. Operating parameters of the column flotation were investigated through three phases of work plans for Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. In present study, the column flotation using two modes of collector addition techniques were tested and compared. Ninety percent or higher combustible recovery can be achieved by using both methods. However, utilizing the gasified collector addition technique in column flotation has more potential than direct liquid addition technique to obtain the higher recovery at same collector dosage.

The empirical nature of this investigation required measurements of variables under operating conditions in underground coal mines. The variables to be measured were based on the postulated character¬istics of the loading function, as described in the previous chapter. One class of variables presumed to influence the loading function are geological variables. Accordingly, the sites for data collection were selected in different bituminous coal seams at dispersed locations in order that variation in geological conditions would exist. Seven mines in central and western Pennsylvania and one mine in northern West Virginia were selected as data collection sites. Five different coal seams were represented by these mines. The remaining classes of variables - geometric, mechanical, and procedural - were measured as they occurred in the mines. A description of the measurements, and the conversion of these measurements to forms which could be-analyzed for effect on the loading function is given. Mining Dimensions At the underground working face, the following dimensions were measured: a. Thickness of coal excavated. b. Thickness of shale excavated. c. Total height excavated. d. DESPITE the fact that American brimstone production has increased 2 ½ times since the prewar period 1935-1939, the demand for sulphur exceeds the supply. To alleviate this situation efforts are being made to increase the production of sulphur and bring the shortage to an end. The most important developments are being undertaken on the Gulf Coast. One new brimstone mine has been put into operation and three others are being developed. These projects are expected to account for a large part of the additional sulphur production now anticipated for the free world.1,2 Except for a small amount of byproduct sulphur from sour natural gas and refinery gases, American brimstone is produced by the same process devised by Frasch 60 years ago, consisting essentially of the injection of superheated water at about 325°F into sulphur-bearing formations through wells which are drilled from the surface by standard oilfield methods. Sulphur deposits vary in depth from a few hundred feet to 2500 ft from the surface; in a typical deposit the sulphur occurs as crystalline aggregates in porous limestone and gypsum in concentrations varying from 5 to 40 pct, the thickness of the formation ranging from a few feet to several hundred.3 The deposits are usually surrounded by formations impermeable to the flow of hot water, the top and sides being enclosed by impermeable sediments and the bottom by dense impermeable anhydrite. As the hot water leaves the well bore, it percolates through the formation and transmits its heat to the rock and sulphur. When the sulphur reaches 240°F it melts, separates from the rock, and flows through the hot channels downward to the bottom of the well. Here it is freed from incoming water and from formation water, which saturates the porous rock, by gravity separation, liquid sulphur being 1.8 times as heavy as water. It then is pumped to the surface in a relatively pure state, 99.5 pct or better. Chief contaminants are organic impurities, such as petroleum residues, which are soluble in sulphur and tend to discolor it.4 Sixteen deposits of commercial magnitude have been discovered in the Gulf Coast area. Five of these deposits have been depleted and abandoned with production totalling more than 26,886,000 tons. Eight properties are operating and have produced 65,875,000 tons to Jan. 1, 1952, for a total Frasch-type production of 92,761,000 tons. Three new deposits are under development. Aforementioned deposits are listed in Table I. Each of these deposits has been found in the caprock overlying shallow intrusive salt plugs or domes and buried in several hundred to as much as 2500 ft of sediments. All salt domes do not contain sulphur; only 16 sulphur deposits have been found in a total of 231 salt domes which are known to exist in the Gulf Coastal states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Ten of the salt domes lie in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Additional offshore domes may be found, but their value as a sulphur potential is questionable owing to the great hazard and high cost that can be visualized at these exposed locations where depths of water reach 50 ft. Marsh operations of Freeport Sulphur Co. are in the southeast section of Louisiana. In general, the country is low, flat, relatively uninhabited marshland broken by many shallow lakes and bayous which extend for irregular distances inland. Geologically, the coastal area is of sedimentary origin, having been built up gradually under the sea by deposition of material carried down by large streams to their deltas. The Bureau of Mines, as part of an agreement with the Bear Coal Co., Somerset, Col o., evaluated the response of a coal mine roof to time lapse. Time lapse, the interval between exposure and support of the roof, was studied using both instrumentation and statistics. Instrumentation studies were designed to equate displacement and rates of displacement with areas of roof left unsupported from 15 minutes to more than 4 days. A statistical study was completed to compare roof fall occurrence with time lapse intervals encountered during normal room-and-pillar mining. Results from this investigation show time lapse, in the Bear mine, to he insignificant with respect to roof stability after installation of permanent support.

Pebble Creek Geothermal Power project is associated with a massive recent volcanic eruption in Southwestern British Columbia Canada. Slim holes drilled to depths 1100 m in the prospect area, show very high temperature gradients around 80?100?C/km. The temperature and chemistry of the Pebble Creek hot springs indicate the possibility of a steam reservoir in the prospect area. In addition to high temperature gradients, presence of host rocks with high permeability, along with abundance of recharge waters (from the Lillooet River) provides clear signature of a high-grade geothermal power reservoir at depth 2000 to 3000 m. Data show that over five hundred Megawatt of green power can be generated from the prospect area in a commercially viable manner. The generated power will be base-load, which in comparison with large hydro has the advantage of lower capital costs and a significantly smaller footprint. The final hurdle to overcome, before starting the development phase, is deep exploratory drilling for resource confirmation. This paper is a summary of the data available on the Pebble Creek geothermal power prospect, presented in the context of viability of the resource for large-scale commercial power generation.

At Kobe Steel Ltd., various improvements in pellet quality have been carried out since beginning lime-fluxed pellet production. Especially, dolomite-fluxed pellets, developed in 1975, have superior high temperature properties. With this improvement, successful BF performance has been achieved. But, in order to achieve more successful BF performance, improvements of physical properties such as the shape factor, reposed angle, and the bulk density are desired. Now, crushed pellets have been developed for the improvement of those characters. The test operation with these new pellets in Kakogawa No. 2 BF was carried out with successful results. This report describes the development of crushed pellets and their use in BF.

Opencast Lignite Mining requires topwall strata of seams to be fully depleted and footwall aquifers sufficiently depressurized. To prevent a spread of the cone of depression into protected wetlands some distance away, alternatives had been investigated such as closing water works, underground slurry wall barriers and recharge by infiltration. As a result of these investigations, the infiltration method has been chosen and in a first phase during the next decade it will utilize as much as 55 x 106 m3/year. Using this approach, the survival of the wet lands is assured.

LOMBARDI, Berkeley, Cal.-Mr. Bell, I would ask you to state before the meeting what you said to me the other day, about the final recovery of oil from oil sands that have become inundated with water. A. F. L. BELL, San. Francisco, Cal: In stating my opinion, I give it with certain qualifications. In the Kern field, and possibly in some others, I think we will eventually get all the oil out, whether the water comes in or not, since it is peculiarly constructed, being in the form of a partial dome. In 1909, while I was field manager of the Associated Oil Co., I installed some large air compressors to handle the water. At that time the oil had migrated to the higher and more shallow portions of the field, because the water had inundated the deeper sections. The result was that the shallow districts within the center of the dome were in many, cases producing as much or more oil per well than the deeper wells. And in the inundated sections the water had slowly spread over large areas, so that nothing but water was pumped from them. Under these conditions, we decided to pump the wet. well with air, and installed four 2,000-cu. ft. compressors. The air was compressed and forced into the wet wells at, about 250 lb. pressure. Shortly the inundated district that had produced almost all water and only about 150 bbl. of oil a day increased its production to over 2,000 bbl. of oil per day. It was not-long before, we noticed that the production of the shallow territory was falling off to such an extent that in many cases the wells were abandoned; at the same time the area of the water-inundated district was greatly reduced, showing that when the water pressure was reduced the oil migrated back to the lower depth. The wells which at first had had the air jets put into them finally produced so much oil that we had to take the 'air jets out and return to the use of the beam pump, because it is not commercially feasible to pump, an oil of 14° gravity with air. To handle such oil profitably by air, it must carry with it 50 to 90 per cent. of water. The results have led me to believe that oil monoclines, where there is a gradual rise to a certain point, or in plunging anticlines, even though water gets into oil sands, eventually we get the larger percentage of the oil. However, the man with a small acreage in the deeper sections may find some morning that his oil has gone, another man in some higher portion of the district having gotten it.

The gradual increase in Cr2O3 levels of UG-2 ores has become a matter of concern for platinum producers in South Africa due to the formation of chromite spinels in melters. The effect of bulk FeOx/MgO ratio, Cr2O3, temperature and oxygen partial pressure on phase stability and composition in the system FeOx-MgOSiO2- Cr2O3-Al2O3-CaO has been studied between 1400°C and 1600°C using the drop-quench technique. An increase in temperature was found to result in a decrease in [Fe/Cr]spinel. An increase in bulk FeOx/MgO caused Mg, Al and Cr in spinel to decrease, forming more magnetite relative to other spinels. [Fe]spinel decreased and [Cr]glass increased with a decrease in oxygen partial pressure.

To further emphasis the bullish view they point to the emergence of India for follow through demand. The bears remain convinced China?s growth is unsustainable and with higher interest rates and high oil prices, the United States economy is poised to slow. Both groups can make a convincing argument and both will be proven right in the fullness of time. Profitability and balance sheet strength for the mining industry has rarely been better. Is this a time to be bold or cautious? In this paper, the author will address the dilemma facing today?s management as they pursue growth and try to minimize risk.

The White Pine Copper Company, subsidiary of Copper Range Company, is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The offices, plant, and mine are six miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County. Employing 1700 people, White Pine is the largest single industry in the Upper Peninsula. 970 underground employees produce 16, 700, tons of ore daily. From this tonnage 363,400 pounds of refined Lake Copper are produced in various shapes as specified by the customer. The following paper explains the geology of the ore body and briefly outlines present mining methods. It enumerates the reasons for considering longwall mining of a hardrock* ore body and the preliminary investigations leading to the decision to undertake the initial test panel. Selection of the initial test panel location is covered in detail. Equipment choice and reasons for that choice are described as well as selection and training of personnel.

The negative charges on diaphragms of quartz, tungstic oxides, stannic acid, acid dyestuffs, soaps, and glass have for a number of years been explained on the basis of chemical equilibria—a hydrogen ion or light metal ion passes into solution leaving the solid complex ion negatively charged. While there are a number of observations which indicate a proportionality between the ( potential and the streaming potential it should be recognized that all the experimental evidence thus far presented shows that if hydrogen ion concentration is kept at a constant value, electrokinetic phenomena are influenced by salts. The multivalent ions exert the greatest effect on the reduction of osmotic flow. In the interpretation of all electrokinetic data the assumption is made that the potential of the solid remains constant. That this is not true is evidenced by the values of [ potential for quartz in contact with conductivity water as reported by the several investigators and by the authors of this paper. It is apparent that the nonreproducibility of surfaces will always prevent the obtaining of exactly comparable data. At best the experimental technique described depends on a theory which is capable only of showing a trend—another quartz surface should exhibit similar but not identical potential curves. It seems entirely reasonable to assume that the negatively charged laurate ions should have little or no attraction for a negatively charged quartz surface. The weight of previous experience in selection of flotation activators points unerringly to the usefulness of the multivalent metallic ions. The primary reason why the divalent barium ion is not available to two negative charges on the quartz surface might easily be that of distance between such adjacent negative charges. Otherwise activation could not occur, and the quartz could not assume the remaining unit positive charge of the barium ion. For this case no electrical double layer theory seems necessary. Clearly this is, at the negatively charged quartz surface, a case of partial chemisorption of the cationically divalent barium ion followed by the anionic neutralization of the remaining cationic charge by the freely moving laurate ion. The most frequent causes of accidental injury and fatality are carelessness and ignorance; and the most common accidents are haulage accidents, fall, drowning, and fire. However, in this modern day and age, severe injury has become the dire consequence of an ever-increasing number of industrial and mining accidents as well as sport-, military- , etc. Mine accidents have declined dramatically in number and severity through decades of research, technology, and preventive programs. However, preventing recurrence of disasters like those of the past remains a top priority requiring constant vigilance by management, labor, and government. The goal of the present research is to investigate and identify root causes associated with types of mining accidents (victim being caught by an equipment, bodily motion, over exertion, etc) and nature of injuries such as (sprain and strains, fracture, dislocation, amputation, etc). Further, we hope to discover the impetus of the root causes occurring more and more often in this modern day of technology and quality awareness. With the different dimensions of accidents and injuries brought into the fold, there is the need for researchers and mining operators to comprehend and better still visualize significant patterns of associations among these variables of interest. We assume that, there is a high correlation between many dimensions of nature of injuries and types of accidents. This suggested a principal component analysis to reduce the dimensions for easy and amenable interpretation.

CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device. When the management decided to start open- pit operations in 1945 the ruggedness of the terrain was one factor that led to the purchase of the small 22-T model drill. The orebody lies on both sides of Copper Creek Canyon. The sides of the canyon are steep and are cut by numerous narrow branch gullies. The drill had to travel over roads that were narrow and steep. It proved adequate for drilling the capping formation and is still in use.

INTRODUCTION How accurate are past and present employee radondaughter exposure records of underground uranium miners employed in the United States? This often-debated question is essential for future substantiation of safe exposure limits. An apparent discrepancy between company-reported exposures and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) projected exposures was detected in 1977. For these reasons a need for an updated comparison of these exposure data was indicated. This paper gives some of the conclusions of the earlier study and compares more recent exposure records compiled by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc., with projected exposures based on sampling by Federal mine inspectors. EARLIER STUDY In its 1977 Annual Report (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978), MSHA's predecessor, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), reported that there was "an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company records." Both company records and MESA's projections from samples taken during routine Federal inspections indicated reductions in the average exposure of underground uranium miners from 1975 to 1977, but the MESA projections were over 4 times higher than the company-reported averages. This apparent discrepancy however, was based on a comparison of exposure data reported for all U.S. underground uranium miners. This projection more closely represented the average exposure of U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked 1,500 hours or more during the year. Exposures of such workers are reported each year by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (AIF) in summaries of exposure data reported to the AIF by uranium mining companies throughout the United States. (The AIF exposure summary for 1979 appears as tables A-1 and A-2 in the appendix of this paper.) Assuming that the average exposure for each exposure range category is the midpoint of each exposure range category, table 1 compares the estimated average exposures for U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked underground 1,500 hours or more each year in 1975 through 1977 with the exposures projected by MESA for those years. Slade, 1977, explained some of the discrepancy between company records and MESA projections of miners' average radon-daughter exposures as follows: 1) Concentrations of radon daughters in some work areas can vary greatly during any one day. A variation from 0.3 WL to 17.0 WL has been measured in the same stope on the same day. 2) Seemingly simple abatement problems indicated by the regular Federal and State inspections were solved simply by manipulating the mine ventilation. 3) The methods used by mine operators to compute cumulative exposures were such that high radiation readings were seldom or never reflected in the records. For example, a work area sampled on Monday indicated a radon-daughter level equal to 0.2 WL and this was recorded. It was sampled again on Wednesday of the following week and the level was 2.2 WL. The miners were withdrawn or told to fix the ventilation, and when this was accomplished the area was sampled and found to be at 0.2 WL again. Although the miners could have been working in the higher concentration up to 6 days, this reading might never be reflected in their records. If it was recorded, only a fraction of the day on which it was discovered would be entered into the cumulative exposure calculation (time-weighted average). 4) Some of the mines visited used a mine average radiation concentration, and every employee working underground was given the same exposure per unit of time spent underground. As a result of the 1977 study, more stringent sampling and recordkeeping standards were proposed and public hearings held in 1977. The resulting new and revised health standards on radon-daughter sampling and exposure recordkeeping became effective August 30, 1979 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 1979). Prior to these new regulations, radondaughter sampling requirements were on an "as often as necessary" basis (Code of Federal Regulations, 1978). The new regulations required practically all active work areas in underground mines to be sampled at least once every 2 weeks, with many areas requiring weekly sampling. "The Western Cape Mineral Processing Facility (WCMPF) is a collaborative educational initiative between the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and the Cape Technikon. The primary objective of the WCMPF is to facilitate the education, development and graduation of suitably qualified engineering graduates and diplomates for the mining industry. The WCMPF consists of academics and Technical Officers in the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the three tertiary institutions. The Technical Officers are usually metallurgists, with several years of industrial experience. The main objective of the Technical Officers is to improve the practical education of mineral processing students. In addition, the Technical Officers are responsible for organising an annual mineral processing student field trip for students from all three tertiary educational institutions. In recent years the WCMPF has embarked on a number of additional initiatives aimed at improving the quality of mineral processing education. These include the development of several new pilot plant practicals, an initiative in pyrometallurgy, the introduction of novel ‘end to end’ or ‘integrated’ practicals and the use of mineral processing simulation packages to complement the practical training.The WCMPF has been functioning for well over a decade and, by virtue of this, might be considered a successful collaborative educational initiative. The WCMPF has played a key role in the education of over five hundred mineral processing graduates and diplomates. During this time period, the WCMPF has gained a body of internal knowledge which might be of benefit to other educational institutions, viz."

Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), we showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/t of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp, respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits.

THE gains of society from the state of primitive conditions in the past to the standard of living which prevails in the advanced countries today have been accomplished mainly by the increasing productive capacity of the population under the leadership and services of the engineer. Without improvements in the arts and industries the growth of population tends to place succeeding generations always at a disadvantage. In this country we have been exploiting with reckless prodigality a wealth of soil and minerals and timber that has been in preparation for thousands of years. We know that the prices of all national products have been advancing, and were on a rising scale even before the phenomenal increases resulting from the war. Over against this depletion of natural wealth we have the influence of improvements made in the methods of production and distribution-and the accumulation of wealth in the form of productive equipment. The net result of these opposing influences determines whether society moves forward or backward.
