The Bureau of Mines Investigated the Copper Bullion claims at Rua Cove on the east coast of knight Island in Prince William Sound, Alaska, during November-December 1948 and March-April 1949. This project was part of the Bureau of Mines program for developing critical and strategic minerals in Alaska, Mineralization at the copper deposit on the Copper Bullion group of claims is mainly pyrrhotate and chalcopyrite, confined to a northeast-trending shear zone in the greenstone 2,000 feet northwest of Rua Cove. The property has been partly developed by two adits, by a number of crosscuts from the upper adit, and by several diamond-drill holes.

F. AT. FARMER*, New York (written discussion?)- The paper presents many phases of the welding art concerning which there are very divergent views. In many cases, the wide differences of opinion are based on the results of mechanical tests, but an examination of the mechanical test data discloses a wide variation in character of the tests made and in the details of procedure, so that it is frequently not only difficult to analyze and check the basis of the conclusions but impossible to correlate various groups of test results. It would seem, therefore, that the technique of testing welds is one of the phases of the welding art that should be studied and standardized in order that the results of mechanical tests made by different people may be strictly comparable and have the same significance to all. The vital difference between testing a specimen of steel that includes a welded joint and testing an ordinary specimen is the non-homogeneity of the weld specimen. The weld specimen has at its center a section composed of material that usually has physical, chemical, and metallurgical characteristics distinctly different from the adjoining metal. Furthermore, the section of added metal is more or less irregular and the ratio of added metal to original metal in the section is quite variable. Consequently the details of procedure and of recording data should be more minutely prescribed than in the testing of ordinary specimens. A conspicuous example f a mechanical test that requires standardization is the cold bending test, a standard test for mild steel. With the usual method, the specimen is bent around. a pin of prescribed diameter and, as all specifications usually require bending to 180° without fracture, the manner of applying the load is immaterial because the specimen is ultimately completely wrapped around the pin. But a specimen containing a welded joint at the center will usually not withstand bending to 180° because of the much lower ductility of the deposited metal in the weld. It is therefore obvious that the farther apart the points of support are the greater will be the angle attained before cracking occurs, simply because most of the bending will take place in the original metal. It is therefore highly desirable that there be prescribed a standard test that fixes exactly the distance between the supports, the curvature of the surface of supports, and the relation between this curvature, that of the loading surface, and the thickness of the specimen.

Webster's dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. While such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to "varieties" of portland cement including "portland-pozzolan" cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far corners of their Empire, such as Hadrian's Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton's carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin's patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England's south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry between 1756 and 1972 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today's technology. As part of the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, this chapter on utilization focuses on inferred interests of the anticipated readers. The main period for which statistics are cited generally is that since the 3rd edition (1960) of this same volume. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or "burning") step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyro processing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relate to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. The year 1972 witnessed a test of the adaptability of cement industry statistics. This was the year of conversion from barrels and sacks of cement as the units of measure to tons and hundredweights. The barrels and sacks related to volumetric measures in that a sack was judged to be 1 cu ft (weighing a "standard" 94 lb). A barrel was 4 sacks. Volumes of concrete are stated in cubic yards, and the number of cubic feet of cement in a cubic yard of concrete was a sensible approach to the mensuration involved. However, cements do not weigh the same amount from plant to plant or from type to type, and the buyer was more interested in getting an assured weight for his money than in "buying air." Thus, a sack, in accepted practice, became 94 lb instead of 1 cu ft, and a "barrel" became 376 lb, regard- less of whether it would fit into 4 cu ft of space. I've talked a number of times in the past year or so to audiences like today's about culture -about thinking of it, understanding it, respecting it. So, rather than talk just yet about your laws for mining on Aboriginal land and the successes some of us and some of you have been able to achieve, I'd like to first of all talk about cul- ture as I understand it. Anyone who proposes any kind of development on Aborigi- nal land needs to have some basic understanding of what we, the traditional owners of that land, are about. Without that under- standing, you will find difficulty in coming to terms with us. Many people have experienced this difficulty and, unless we can do something about it together, many more will continue to find it.

The challenge; to design production facilities and in particular separation equipment which have the ability to deal effectively with the ever changing composition of well fluids, over the life time of the field in which it is operating, ensuring maximum uptime of the asset coupled with consistently effective separation. Design engineers are, however, continually confronted with a dilemma when selecting materials of construction for Oil/Gas separation equipment, since they are generally obliged to select an acceptable material of construction, based on ?predicted? operating conditions, at the lowest acceptable cost. Consequently many designs are somewhat basic and do not take into account the constantly varying dynamics of the well fluids being released into the separator. As oil fields mature, oil companies endeavour to maximize revenue by maintaining oil and gas throughputs. This often results in an associated increase in water and sand volumes and, in order to maintain efficient separation, an increase in operational temperature and pressure; subjecting the equipment to operational conditions for which it was never designed. In reality, therefore, the limitations and constraints placed upon new construction design often result in Maintenance Engineers having to solve the ensuing problems in difficult ?in-field? environments. Should refurbishment or upgrade be required then the status of the platform and that of the vessel during shutdown will dictate how this is achieved. Hotwork on the vessel is generally not preferred due to the requirement for post weld heat treatment and re-classification of the pressure vessel, not to mention the added risk in terms of safety. Unfortunately, until recently, there have been few alternatives to conventional ?hotwork? repair and protection systems, especially since the performance of cold curing polymer based repair and coating systems, for use in oil and gas process equipment, has, until recently, been limited by their resistance to temperature and pressure in immersed conditions. In line with the continued development of high temperature / high pressure oil and gas fields however, recent breakthroughs in polymer technology can now offer both repair and protection solutions which are able to function effectively at temperatures up to 180°C in immersed conditions combined with resistance to the destructive forces of explosive decompression from pressures in excess of 90 bar. This paper will look at recent work that has been undertaken to determine the suitability of modern polymer based repair and protection systems as an alternative to hotwork; thus enabling newly designed and upgraded internals to be cold bonded into position and further protected with temperature resistant coatings, in order to minimize the downtime of the asset and further to protect the vessel internals from the Erosive Corrosive environment.

THE highly publicized shortage of students enrolled in engineering curricula has brought about a rapid increase in the enrollment in engineering schools in many parts of the country. Though most of the various curricula in the mineral industries field have participated in this increase, the experience at Pennsylvania State University has been that the nonmineral types of engineering have been increasing at a much more rapid rate than those in the College of Mineral Industries. [ ] It has been a matter of some concern to the staff of the College of Mineral Industries that enrollment in the curricula of the school has not been increasing at a rate commensurate with that experienced in the College of Engineering. If the lack of trained young graduates for our vital mineral industries is to be overcome, this situation must be remedied.

"This chapter outlines the organization of mine/ mill complexes in Canadian mining companies. Many factors unique to the Canadian mining industry will affect the design of the organization in the future: geographic location, the size and the type of orebody, etc. Mining companies cannot choose where new operations will be located, that is dictated by the location of the orebody. New mines are seldom started near established communities. Rather, the towns usually grow up near the mines. The remoteness of most Canadian mining operations has caused severe problems in attracting and/ or retaining all levels of employees. This means that training has a high priority within each operation.Another factor affecting mine/ mill organizations is the size of the operation. Larger operations generally require more departments and increased specialization to manage equipment and manpower effectively. Thus, for mine/mill complexes, organizational charts are less standardized than in other industries. It is often necessary to organize around the work force rather than develop a chart and then acquire the trained personnel to fill the diagrammed positions.The information presented in this chapter has been derived from the responses received from a survey of Canadian mining operations.Principles of OrganizationOrganization can be defined as deployment of personnel to accomplish definite goals. In the mining industry, the major goals are typically the projected number of tons and grade of ore mined on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Organizing involves establishment of authority relationships with provisions for both vertical and horizontal co-ordination within the company structure. Vertical co-ordination is the delegation of responsibility and communication of goals and reporting of progress between the supervisor and subordinate. Horizontal co-ordination is communication between departments at positions of equal authority to determine methods of achieving predefined goals. The organization structure must reflect the objectives and plans of the company, and must clearly define areas of authority.Two criteria for effective organization are departmentalization and manpower planning."

The steadily increasing interest in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) as a legitimate alternative comminution technology for hard rock applications has led to a proportional increase in the demand for trade-off studies comparing HPGR with more established approaches, typically SAG-based but including AG and stage-crushing designs. The primary trade-off is between a) the higher capital cost typically incurred with HPGR-based designs and b) the higher operating costs of the more traditional technologies. However, if, through circuit design innovation, the capital cost penalty of HPGR circuits could be eliminated or reversed, then the need for trade-off studies would diminish.

WILLIAM H. KOBBÉ (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with much interest the discussion of my paper by Arthur Knapp and I. N. Knapp published in the March Bulletin. These discussions apparently assume that my paper advances a. number of ideas that are not intended: 1. That the total sandbody or pay is to be removed. 2. That upon bringing this sand and oil to the surface 100 per cent., or perfect separation, can take place. 3. That this tremendous quantity of sand is then hauled away in wagons and distributed as road material. The paper raider discussion is not a theoretical treatment of the subject but is the result of actual experience in oil production under the conditions mentioned.. That wells that produce sand produce in ore oil, and the best operating methods to bring this about are fully treated. It is, of course, impossible to remove all the oil sand underlying a property, but the greater the amount removed the greater becomes the production of oil. As stated in my paper, the surface disposal of this large volume of sand is a problem and the only use to which it can be put is road surfacing; but I did not intend to convey the idea that all this sand was thus used. Only a very small quantity was required on the company's roads, and two wagons only were employed for this purpose. The remaining sand accumulated in the numerous "washes" and sumps. Although this sand contained sufficient oil to stain the hands, it was, surprisingly dry and could be easily shoveled. As stated in the paper, "the piles of sand are gradually freed of their oil content and a crust forms on their surface which will bear the weight of a man." I consider this a high degree of separation. A small amount of oil necessarily remains in the sand and is held there by capillarity. Otherwise it would be useless as a road binder, and, furthermore, to recover such oil special processes of treating are required. Arthur Knapp says, "of the total volume produced by pumping, not more than 4 or 5 per cent. can possibly be sand." I cannot agree with this statement as I have managed many properties where the wells were so operated that the amount of sand produced was five times this figure.

All the mining machinery of the Penn Iron Mining Co. has been operated by electric power for several years and when another shovel for stockpile loading was required the advantages of an electric shovel were naturally considered. After considerable study, serious objections suggested themselves the use of a shovel operated directly by electrical apparatus by reason of the complicated control, severe service on the motors and the heavy surges of current required from the line. It was finally decided to construct an electro-hydraulic shovel using water under pressure to perform all the necessary operations except that of propelling, for which a separate motor was best suited. A car body with boom, dipper handle and dipper of late design, but without any of the steam machinery, was purchased. A motor-driven centrifugal pump, a pressure tank, an air tank, a small air compressor and water cylinders with plungers, pistons and valves, were installed in place of the steam equipment. This paper presents a combined analytical and experimental study of chisel penetration vs time during chisel impact on rock, a problem of fundamental importance in improving the performance of roller-cone bits or percussion drilling toots. For a given force-time relationship between chisel and rock, the problem of determining the penetration (displacement) vs time of the chisel is formidable. This is so because the rock is a nonlinear system with distributed mass and distributed damping (friction, dissipation of energy due to rupture, etc.). Since the literature does not contain adaptable solutions, the rock behavior to impact was simulated approximately by an "equivalent" lumped system, that is, an "equivalent" mass, spring, dashpot system. With this assumption, an analytical solution was found for chisel penetration vs time due to a sinusoidal load between chisel and rock. From this solution were found curves, in terms of dimension-less variables, for the maximum depth of penetration vs the frequency of the sinusoidal loading and for the energy transfer vs frequency. The results of this analysis were used to predict the penetration rate of rotary rock bits us rotary speed. The curve indicated that an optimum speed exists. To verify this analysis, an experimental apparatus was constructed and used to apply a sinusoidal pulse to a chisel penetrating a rock specimen under atmospheric conditions. Strain gauges were mounted on the chisel shank and a velocity transducer was mounted between the chisel and the rock surface. The velocity was integrated electrically and picked up simultaneously with the strain gauge signal on an oscilloscope. Permanent records were made photographically to provide simultaneous records of force us time and penetration us time. In comparing the experimental results for limestone and dolomite with the theoretical results, good agreement was found in the frequency range of the experiments. Unfortunately, the inertia effect (peak penetration) indicated by the theory occurs at a frequency much higher than could be obtained experimentally with the apparatus constructed. A "rate-of-loading" effect is indicated theoretically, but has not yet been verified experimentally. INTRODUCTION The process of drilling with percussion tools or rotary rock bits is basically related to the transient response of rock to surface impact. Each time a bit tooth contacts the rock, high stresses are developed which result in penetration and rock removal. As the tooth moves on, stresses are relieved and a new cycle begins as the next tooth contacts the rock. Thus the drilling process, which consists of an endless succession of these cycles, can be studied in terms of a single cycle. It is apparent, therefore, that the study of single-chisel impact on rock is fundamentally important in improving the performance of roller-cone and percussive-type drills. Previous studies in this area have been conducted by Simon1 and Hartman2 by means of drop tests. In these tests a chisel was attached to a weight and allowed to fall, due to the force of gravity, so that the chisel was driven into a rock specimen upon impact. Strain gauges were attached to the chisel shank and the resulting force-vs-time curves were recorded photographically from an oscilloscope screen. The depth of penetration and crater dimensions were also measured. These tests have provided much valuable information but, as mentioned by the investigators, have not provided complete information on the effect of "rate of loading'! This is partly due to the fact that the chisel motion during drop tests is not a controlled motion which can be varied in form and frequency. Therefore, it seemed that additional information could be obtained by studying chisel impact under conditions where both the motion and the frequency of loading could be controlled. We prepared the CuCr alloy by thermit reduction-electromagnetic casting. But there are the defects such as stomata and oxide inclusions in CuCr alloy. In this paper, the existing state and distribution of inclusions and stomata in CuCr alloy are systematically analyzed. The alloy was characterized via SEM, EDS and metallographic microscope, in which the existing state and micro-structural defects of inclusions are analyzed. The results show that: there are three distinct areas: copper-rich areas, chromium-rich areas and the inclusion areas. Inclusions are mainly in the form of stomata and Al2O3 phase, mainly locating in the copper-rich phase and the interface area of chromium-rich phase and the copper-rich phase. Then, the composition of phases of the smelting slags and alloy were characterized via XRD. The results show that: the slag consists of Al2O3 and a little of Cr, the alloy consists of Cr, Cu and a little of Al2O3.

In the municipality of Rio Quito, department of Chocó, Colombia, alluvial gold has been illegally exploited by suction dredging. The project consists of using geospatial techniques to identify degraded areas and analyze the viability of remediation dredging to mitigate environmental liabilities. The area has sediments contaminated by mercury and cyanide, so it is necessary to reconform the riverbed with the remediated material. Variations in ore grade, mineralogy, and copper pricing structures over the life of the Inspiration mine have mandated many modifications to the treatment methods to maximize process economics. In the 1970's, copper prices generally declined, while inflation, wages, and interest rates increased. A metallurgical treatment route had to be developed for this continuing economic climate which would be capable of minimizing labor, energy, and capital cost requirements. After many years of development, the patented "Ferric Cure" process was introduced to satisfy these requirements. This dump leach process for treatment of mixed oxide/sulfide ore includes: strict mineralogical control of ore placed for leaching, controlled leach pad construction, solution saturation and curing of the pads with higher acid concentrations, and, finally, rinsing of the cured pads for removal of dissolved copper. Leach solutions, high in sulfuric acid during the cure application and low in sulfuric acid during the rinse, contain sufficient ferric iron to enhance the leaching of chalcocitic sulfide minerals.

"Centrifugal casting offers a route to high quality products in difficult to cast high temperature low superheat alloys and thin section molds. Under centrifugal forces metal is forced into thin sections and can fill thicknesses of less than a millimeter. However, due to the high liquid metal velocities there is a high risk of surface turbulent flow and air entrainment within the liquid metal. The combination of interacting flow-thermal-solidification phenomena and associated defects is a challenging modeling task which the authors have previously described and validated. Capturing the metal-air interface, on what are inevitably complex three dimensional geometries, results in highly computationally expensive simulations and simulating a single cast can take weeks on a single processor. This contribution reports on modeling a complex centrifugal cast, gas entrainment, bubble transport and solidification, employing meshes of up to a million elements and investigates the scalability of the model on high performance clusters.Introduction The ultimate goal of any casting procedure is to produce a defect-free product. For difficult to cast alloys, such as Titanium, centrifugal casting has a number of advantage over conventional gravity methods [1]. In the casting of thin sections, such as turbine blades, the metal is forced into the thin sections under centrifugal forces. The centrifugal force can overcome the backpressure due to surface tension and the metal can fill mould sections with thicknesses substantially less than a millimeter. However, the materials used in these castings [2] tend to be highly reactive and requires low superheat. High liquid metal velocity gives rise to a high risk of free surface turbulent flow and of associated entrainment through free surface turbulence [3] and trapping of gas present in the flow [1]."

"The property of Francoeur Gold Mines, Limited, lies directly west of the Armfield mine in Beauchastel township, Abitibi district, and 12 miles west and slightly south of Noranda. The gold deposits are of particular interest because of their replacement character and close association with fault zones. The property was originally staked in 1923 following the discovery oi a mineralized zone near the eastern boundary. This became No. 1 orebody. Later discoveries in 1936 of No. 2 and No. 3 orebodies led to underground development and actual mining in July, 1938. A fourth orebody, No. 8, was found in 1939.The following is the production record up to December 31st, 1947:Beginning in September, 1944, ore was shipped to Noranda as siliceous flux, but late in 1946 milling of low-silica ore from No. 1 orebody was undertaken until operations were temporarily suspended in 1947.The four main ore deposits, Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 8, consist of siliceous ferrocarbonate and albite replacement bodies mineralized with fine pyrite and specularite in schistose fault zones in Keewatin volcanics. Barren to low grade quartz veins though present in some are uncommon, but small stringers of quartz are usually present wherever here and there visible gold is found. Nos. 1, 2, and 3 deposits lie in a major fault zone that extends completely across the property from west to east (over 7,000 feet) and dips N.40° to 50°, and are separated by intervals of 1,800 to 2,000 feet respectively. The fourth lies in a smaller fault zone striking east and dipping on the average 65°S.No. 1 orebody has been explored by mining to a depth of 500 feet, No. 2 to 400 feet, and No. 3 to slightly less than 300 feet . The greater part of No. 8 lies above a depth of 200 feet, but a raise has recently .been driven through from the west end of the 5th level of No. 1 to the 2nd level on No. 8 zone. Most of the ore of No. 8 zone above the 2nd level and of Nos. 2 and 3 above the 3rd levels has been removed."

The Plant Metallurgist is faced with a library of complex theories relating to optimisation. The practical reality of optimisation lies in a combination of steady state simulation to ensure that the process route will permit maximum productivity and an appropriate process control system which will permit achievement of the production and quality objectives.

Most high, purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz-generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found which is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies - Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco, Inc. - mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, Illinois. Both companies mine from various locations within a ten mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Company mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Flotation, as we know it today, is a physiochemical method of concentrating finely ground ores. The process involves chemical treatment of an ore pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain mineral particles to air bubbles which are carried to the surface of the ore pulp for removal. Frother reagents, combined with air and the agitation mechanism, produce the effective bubbles in a flotation cell. A method of analysis is presented to evaluate the effect of frother reductions and additions on a bank of flotation cells, and to economically determine if and to what extent frother reductions and additions are justified. Comparative evaluations of different frother systems, as well as the amount of frother used in a given flotation machine, cannot be made on the frother cost alone. An indepth study must be made to evaluate any given frother as applied to a particular ore body. The recovery of a given mineral is as dependent on the amount of frother as on the type of frother used. An actual case study follows in which the amount of frother required by two different flotation machines was used to make a decision as to which unit performed more efficiently based on costs. This same method may be used to evaluate new frothers as well as to determine if a larger frother addition is advisable.
