An elevated location of a paste thickener on a ridge close to the disposal area is considered at a Swedish iron ore mine. About 0.7 M tonnes of thickened tailings are planned to be layered as paste in the vicinity of the thickener over several years with pipeline lengths of up to 900 m after about 20 years. In order to clarify the pipeline pumping characteristics of the tailings product for volumetric solids concentration from 40 to 50%, experiments in loop systems with pipeline inner diameters from 0.063 to 0.152 m have been carried out with various types of pumps. The results and comparisons carried out here showed that the performance of centrifugal pumps cannot simply be related to the rheology, but factors related to pump design and build-up tendencies of material within the pump and other particle properties may be of equal importance. During the first years of operation only one thickener underflow pump is required. The reliability and performance for various pump configurations are planned to be investigated systematically in order to meet the most effective long-term solution for paste thickener operation, pipeline distribution and placement in the disposal area as the discharge point advances over the life of the project.

"An acidification circuit was installed and operated at the Agnico-Eagle Silver Division refinery in Cobalt, Ontario, for treating ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution with the purpose of recovering its cyanide and metal values. The acidification circuit was designed from parameters determined experimentally at CANMET. Available refinery equipment was assembled according to a flowsheet developed by Agnico-Eagle Mines. The process produced a regenerated cyanide solution containing >15 g/L of free cyanide, which was used for leaching gold ore at another Agnico- Eagle operation. It was estimated that the value of the recovered cyanide offset the treatment cost. BackgroundThe Silver Division of Agnico-Eagle Mines needed an economic and effective method for disposing of ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution that had remained in the plant after the operation was shut down in 1989. As a result of extensive recycling and evaporation, the solution had become practically saturated with metals, cyanide, thiocyanate, sulphate and other components, and was, therefore, an environmental liability for the company. A partial analysis of the solution is presented in Table 1. Initially, the use of cyanide destruction methods was considered by Agnico-Eagle, but the estimates indicated a considerable cost with no credits to be gained. A research project carried out by CANMET showed that a simple procedure consisting of acidification, filtration and reneutralization was the most attractive option, because it enabled the recovery of a substantial portion of the cyanide. Furthermore, the metals would be recovered in the form of a solid precipitate. The research showed that conventional AVR was not applicable because of excessive cyanide degradation and low HCN volatilization obtained with this particular solution (Riveros et al., 1996). This paper describes the procedure used to treat the concentrated cyanide waste solution and the operating practices of the large-scale acidification circuit run at the Agnico-Eagle refinery."

A review of the the more common evaluation tests made on coal and how the test results are applied in commercial practice. Zirconium single crystals of various specific orientations were fabricated by rolling or drawing. The resulting textures were determined and are discussed with respect to the deformation modes that produced them. The crystals deformed in a predictable manner by combinations of up to third-order twinning with three twinning modes and by slip. Twinning was found to play a major role in initial texture formation. Texture changes produced by slip occurred only at the higher reductions. The twinning sequences that produced each intensity peak during the initial reductions could be identified. Schmid factor criteria were found useful in predicting which deformation modes to expect for each crystal orientation and fabrication procedure. The possible application of these data to poly-crystalline material is discussed. PREFERRED orientation or texture has a significant effect on the properties of most materials, causing anisotropy in fabricated cubic metals and enhancing the natural anisotropy of noncubic metals. This study evaluates the effects of several fabrication methods on the textures formed from specific starting orientations of zirconium single crystals and, it is hoped, gives an insight into the effects of the same operations on poly-crystalline material. BACKGROUND In fcc and bcc metals, texture changes take place by gradual lattice rotations caused by the operation of one or more slip systems. Deformation twinning plays an insignificant role in the deformation of such metals. In zirconium and its alloys, however, and in many other hep metals the ability to twin allows very rapid texture changes to be made with very small amounts of deformation. The deformation systems found in zirconium and its alloys are prism slip and three twinning modes.1 Slip occurs on the {1010}< 1120) system. There is little or no appreciable basal slip in zirconium. The twinning planes, illustrated in Fig. 1, are {1012}, {ll2l}, and {1122}. Two twinning modes, the {1012} and the {ll2l} operate for a tensile stress along the basal pole. A compressive stress parallel to the basal pole is required for {ll22} twinning. These twinning operations cause a 35- to 85-deg reorientation of the basal pole. The {1012} twin is the predominant tensile twin at room temperature. The twinning shears, S, are shown in the figure. A criterion for predicting which deformation system will operate when a grain is subjected to a known stress state is the Schmid (orientation) factor. This factor gives the fraction of the applied stress that computer program was written2 to calculate the Schmid factors for the four deformation modes in zirconium. It assumed three orthogonal stress axes and considered ninety-one different orientations of the basal pole in one octant of this stress space. At each basal pole position the Schmid factors were calculated for seven positions of rotation at 10-deg increments of the unit cell about the basal pole. Schmid factors were determined for a total of 637 orientations and for twenty-four deformation systems in each orientation. The program listed the Schmid factors for uniaxial stress parallel to each axis and, to approximate rolling, or-thonormal biaxial stress was also considered. Fig. 2 shows the range of orientations over which the various types of deformation would tend to predominate in biaxial plane strain with the stresses, equal magnitude. The exact boundary position between regions of different deformation modes depends, however, on the relative values of the critical shear stress for each deformation mode. Fig. 2 is drawn on the assumption that they are equal and it therefore may be only approximately correct. It is also recognized that the biaxial stress analysis may not be applicable in certain crystal orientations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of zone-refined zirconium, produced by Wilson of this Laboratory,3 were electrical-discharge-machined to form specimens for rolling, tube-drawing, and rod-drawing studies. Specimens were rolled at room temperature on 2-|--in.-diam hand-powered rolls from three different starting orientations: 1) the basal plane parallel to the rolling plane and the [1120] in the rolling direction, (0001)[ll20]; 2) the (1120) plane parallel to the rolling plane and the basal pole in the rolling direction, (1120)[0001]; and 3)_the (1120) plane parallel to the rolling plane and the [1100] in the rolling direction, (1120)[ll00]. At Bougainville Copper Limited comparison testwork was conducted between "horizontal" cycloning and conventional vertical cycloning. Horizontal cycloning reduces circulating load and allows increased ball mill throughput. Cyclone efficiency is the same or better as a result of the reduction of fines short-circuiting to the underflow. Operationally, horizontal cyclones are less likely to suffer from blocked spigots and high cyclone feed pump sump levels. Cyclone feed pumping power is reduced. High horizontal cyclone underflow density provides the option to optimise grind by manipulating water addition to the ball mill feed.

In this study, coke oven tar additions over a range of 0?8 wt.% were evaluated as a possible substitute for imported coal fractions. The coke oven tar used was collected from tar decanters in the byproducts section of the coking plant. The moisture content in the tar varied depending on the residence time and water carryover from the coke oven tar separators to the storage tanks. Moisture contents of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% were investigated in order to evaluate the effect on coal blend, carbonization, and coke properties. At 6 wt.% moisture content with 6 wt.% coke oven tar, although the coke quality improved the yield showed a 4% decrease. On the other hand, 1 wt.% moisture content with coke oven tar of 6 wt.%, increased the yield by 1% and the coke quality improved. However, the latter process was characterized by an excessive increase in wall pressure and pushing energy, both of which are detrimental to the oven walls. The optimum moisture content in coke oven tar was found to be 3 wt.% with a coke oven tar addition of 6 wt.% in the coal blend. With these conditions, the coke properties improved and wall pressure and pushing energy were acceptable. However, a decrease in coke yield of up to 2% was observed. Despite this, coke oven tar addition is considered to be a viable option based upon economic factors of a reduction in the quantity and cost of imported coking coals that is required to achieve the same optimum final coke product. During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 19274 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil-, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein. Bulletin 2916 states that many oil producers and refiners use the word "base" much as it is used in pharmaceutical work. For example, the "base" or "basis" of an ointment or salve is the fatty material (lard, petroleum, or lanolin) used as a vehicle or carrier for the active medicinal principles. Apparently many of the pioneers in the petroleum industry considered crude oil similar in nature to these medicinal products in that it consists of a semisolid, nonvolatile base and 1 volatile portion can be distilled off to make gasoline, kerosene, and other products. Many crude oils when chilled slowly deposit a waxy material (paraffin); this fact may have been one reason for the use of the term "paraffin base" in referring to such oils. Almost all of the petroleum first discovered in the United States was of this nature; not until the oil industry was extended to California and along the Gulf coast was petroleum found that contained no wax but apparently did contain asphaltic material Accordingly, these oils were known as "asphalt-base" oils. The use of this term, however, seems unfortunate, as better-grade oils of this type contain little if any asphalt; the descriptive term "naphthene base" now seems to be a more desirable term than "asphalt base." The term "intermediate base" is also used commonly in referring to oils intermediate in oharacteristios between those of paraffin and naphthene base.

The subject article appears in the February, 1978, edition of Mining Engineering, and on page 190 carries the statement, "As most operators know, in a Water-Only cyclone, ability to adjust the vortex finder is quite important due to the sensitivity of this type of operations to variance in feed conditions and having to take them apart to make this adjustment is always a nuisance." Our experience as a manufacturer and supplier of Water Only cyclones does not agree with the above statement, and we offer the following brief discussion. Our company finds that the sensitivity of the Water-Only cyclone is a function of the fineness of the coal being washed, with the sensitivity to vortex finder length being greatest for coals coarser than 3/4-in. and virtually insensitive to raw coal finer than 1 mm. For coals finer than 1 mm, we find that we can use the shortest standard vortex finder in either our 10- or 15- in. Water Only cyclone without exception. For coals 5/8-in. x 1 mm ceramic vortex finders of fixed length have been satisfactory in all cases following an initial testing period in which the length was determined. Coals coarser that 5/8-in. are more sensitive to the vortex finder length, and two installations handling coals coarser than 1-in. continued to experiment with vortex finders of various lengths long after the initial startup period. For coals of all sizes, final adjustment of product quality has been achieved by determining the optimum size of apex orifice, which is accessible and readily changed, if necessary. Comments above assume no unusual change in the coal being washed or the required quality of clean coal.

A STUDY of the titanium-oxygen system&apos; involved an associated series of measurements of the lattice parameters of the a and TiO phases. The results permit some interesting deductions which are herein reported. A comprehensive survey of the physical PI-operties of the phases in this alloy system has been made by Ehrlich.2 However, only impure titanium was available at that time, so that some revision of his measurements is to be expected. The lattice parameters were calculated from the high angle lines of Debye-Scherrer patterns taken in a 14 cm camera and using filtered CuKa radiation. The specimens were prepared largely by crushing and screening of lump samples which had been quenched from elevated temperatures. Only in the case of low oxygen contents was it necessary to resort to filing and annealing. The results of the lattice parameter studies are graphically presented in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be seen that oxygen produces a pronounced distortion of the c parameter of the a phase (hexagonal close-packed). The trend is in general agreement with Ehrlich&apos;s work, although the divergence of actual parameter values strongly suggests that his titanium was very impure. It will be noted that the a phase of titanium can tolerate the unusually high saturation solubility of about 34 atomic pct 0. By virtue of this unique effect, it is possible to make a calculation of the effective atomic diameter of oxygen when dissolved in a lattice with metallic bonding. This has not been possible before. Ehrlich&apos;s2 density measurements demonstrated that oxygen occupies interstitial positions in the a lattice and the trend of the lattice parameters would certainly support this. In a hexagonal close-packed unit cell the largest interstitial positions lie at (2/3, 1/3, 1/4) and (2/3, 1/3, 3/4). Accordingly, if both of these positions were occupied, the ratio of titanium to oxygen would be 1:1. The extrapolated c parameter may be taken as between 4.93 and 4.99?. The a parameter appears to reach a constant value of 2.955? at low oxygen contents. The distance of the center of a titanium atom site from the [vc2/16+a2/3-1.448] Then the atomic diameter of the oxygen atom is represented by the function: where the radius of the titanium atom is 1.448A,

Introduction.-The special object of these notes is to describe the mixing, testing, and use of mud-ladened water for rotary drilling in such a way as to make them helpful to the driller, the operator, or the engineer in solving his own special drilling problems. The structures, apparatus and tools used are indicated in a general way. No attempt is made to describe the art of rotary drilling; only such description as are necessary to make plain the use of mud are given. The information is the result of actual experience in drilling in Coastal Plain formations. The materials encountered in the wells drilled were unconsolidated sands, gravels, and clays, in which thin layers of sandstones, shell conglomerates, and shales began to appear at about 1,200 ft. in depth, although one well was drilled to 3,018 ft. without encountering any cemented or indurated materials. Unusual Conditions.-The general surface of the ground where the drilling was done being hardly a foot above mean tide, and the daily tidal variation being about 15 in., it was found necessary to plank over the sod surface with 3-in. plank to work from. A 30 by 30 ft. planked area was sufficient to carry the derrick with equipment and 2,500 ft. of 4-in. drill pipe stacked in it. The derrick was set up 3 ft. on cribbed blocking arranged to spread the load over the planking. The engine, boilers, and pipe yard were also carried on 3-in. planking. Drilling Outfit.-This consisted of a derrick, 20 by 20 ft. and 84 ft. high, two 35 h.p., "oil country" boilers, one double 8 ¼ by 10 in. reversible engine, two 10 by 6 by 12 in. duplex mud pumps, one 15-in. rotary, "hoisting works" with chain drive, hoisting block with line, crown block with pulleys, rotary&apos; jetting swivels, hose, complement of tools, pipes and connections, and. a mud mixer, with engine.

Since 1950 Stockton Open Cast Mine has excavated over 60 million tonnes of Brunner Coal Measures overburden sandstones and mudstones. The current operator, Solid Energy New Zealand, recognises that acidic drainage from this overburden and from historic underground mines has led to depressed pH levels and elevated levels of metals in streams draining the Stockton Plateau. These streams report to the Ngakawau River. To quantify the effects of mine site acid drainage remediation/mitigation on the lower Ngakawau River water quality, a catchment hydrogeochemical model has been field calibrated and ecotoxicology tests have been undertaken. The hydrogeochemical model indicates that pre-mining and present pH values in the lower Ngakawau River are similar but present aluminium and iron concentrations are elevated. Ecotoxicology tests have semi-quantified the critical metal concentrations and interim water quality targets to achieve ecological recovery are presented. Analyses of long-term total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity monitoring in the lower Ngakawau River and St Patrick&apos;s Stream indicate that TSS of 120 mg/L and turbidity of 20 NTU are exceeded for &lt;20% per cent of the time. Hence, specific criteria to protect migratory native fish from turbid water are currently met in the Ngakawau River and St Patrick&apos;s Stream.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for loading shovels. Approach An automatic fire, sensing and suppression system using both dry chemical and Halon 1301 was developed. It is more rugged than similar industrial-type fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors detect heat from a fire, and trigger the system. These sensors are located inside the machinery house and under the house and shovel frame where it rotates around the crawler chassis ring gear. An alarm is sounded, and extinguishing agents are released either in the machinery house or in the ring gear area. The system can also be triggered by a manual control. If the fire Is detected in the machinery house, all power is shut down to the motor-generator sets, ventilation fan, and all electrical controls. Doors are automatically closed. After a delay to allow time for the ventilation fan to stop, Halon 1301, a gaseous fire extinguishing agent, is released inside the machinery house until it reaches a concentration of about 7 percent. This concentration is sufficient to extinguish a fire, but isn&apos;t toxic to personnel

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer&apos;s con- trolling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, for good plant control, two basic requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

A method is outlined for the analysis of large cores, developed primarily for the purpose of obtaining reliable data on fractured or vugular limestones. Porosity and fluid saturations are determined by a modified Dean-Stark extraction after initially bringing the samples to 100 per cent liquid saturation by a vacuum-pressure method. Horizontal permeabilities on the whole samples are determined in two directions, parallel and perpendicular to the di-rection of principal fracturing. Results are presented for various types of formations. A comparison is made between data obtained by this special method and the method of conventional analysis, and discussion is given of the relative advantages and limitations of each. In view of this comparison a modified method for the analysis of fractured and vugular formations is proposed, which method retains the advantages of the previously outlined techniques but gives promise of speeding up the analysis. INTRODUCTION For many years the greater part of the production in the Permian Basin was from formations of Permian and Pennsylvanian age. While production from these formations is still the predominant production. deeper prospecting has brought to light older formations with oil productive characteristics. Attempts to core these deeper horizons were at first usually characterized by poor recovery. The old rule of thumb, "good core recovery — poor well" was originated and remained in effect until recently. With the advent of diamond coring and the increased efficiency in drilling and coring operations. the old adage has lost its significance. Formations of Devonian. Silurian and Ordo-vician ages were successfully cored with varying degrees of recovery. The cores thus obtained were surprising and in some case; disappointing. Good recovery from these formations led to speculation as to the feasibility of analysis and the meaning of data obtained from conventional analysis. Commercial laboratories were engaged to analyze these cores. and their results indicated that data obtained by conventional methods would be of little value. From visual inspection it was apparent that in many cases the effective porosity for storage of hydrocarbons. and permeability. were contained largely in fractures and solution cavities rather than in the primary crystalline structure of the formation. In other cases the solution cavities augmented the effective porosity of the primary crystalline structure, or fractures enhanced the permeabiilty of the latter so that the formation might respond favorably to acidization and become commercially productive. Since the spacing of the cavities and fractures was often comparable to the core diameter, it was evident that the entire core should he analyzed instead of small fragments. On the basis of these observations, commercial laboratories were requested to devise a system of analysis which would yield data of practical value. Pro- cedures have accordingly been developed which seem to meet this requirement, and to date nearly 12,000 large core samples have been analyzed. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods used, to present typical results for several fractured formations and to compare the data obtained by this special analysis with that obtained by conventional analysis. Certain modifications and alternative procedures are finally suggested to speed up the analysis. CORE ANALYSIS PROCEDURE Fluid Saturations and Porosity The core sample, in segments up to 15 in. in length. is marked, weighed and examined under ultra-violet light to determine the presence of oil saturation. If present, the approximate quantity of oil and its location on intercrystalline, fracture or vugular surfaces is noted. This information is carefully recorded. The degree of fracturing and/or vugular development is also noted. The sample is then placed in a pressure cell and the air evacuated with a high speed vacuum pump. This evacuation is continued only long enough to reduce the pressure to approximately the vapor pressure of water in order not to remove excessive amounts of water. Water is admitted to the cell and allowed to penetrate the sample under atmospheric pressure, filling the pore space initially occupied by air and replacing the small amount of water removed by evacuation. THE object of this paper is to review recent geological work in the Cariboo district and to present notes on the recent development of mineral properties. The Geological Survey has done considerable work in the Cariboo district, extending over a period of years. In 1885 and 1886, Bowman (1) mapped the geology of a large area. In 1922 and 1923, Johnston and Uglow (2) mapped Barkerville area in some detail and prepared a report on the placer and lode gold deposits. In 1931 and 1932, Cockfield and Walker (3) mapped the Quesnel Forks area. In 1933, Hanson reported on Willow River area ( 4), and in 1934 made a detailed examination of part of the Barkerville area (5). In 1935, Lang commenced work on the Keithley area, lying to the southeast of the Barkerville area, and in 1936 published a preliminary re-port (6). The work on Keithley area was continued in 1936 by both authors of the present paper. As the results of the earlier work have been published, this paper will be concerned largely with Keithley area, that is, the part of the region lyinp between longitudes 121° 00&apos; and 121° 30&apos;, and latitudes 52° 45&apos; and 53° 00 . This area lies astride Cariboo (Swamp) river and extends north some 17 miles from Keithley, which is situated near the southern border of the map-area (see sketch-map). Points in the western part of the map-area are fairly accessible. A road extends from Barkerville to upper Cunningham creek, and from this a trail crosses Snowshoe plateau to Keithley. A second trail from this road leads to the lower falls on Cariboo river. From this road, a branch road leads to upper Antler creek, with a trail leading from this branch road to Keithley. Part of this western half of the area is made up of the Snowshoe plateau, which constitutes a gently rolling surface, at or above timber line, where trails are largely unnecessary.

A solidificação do aço no molde é determinante para a qualidade superficial da placa, considerando que os principais defeitos tendem a se formar nos primeiros estágios de formação da pele. Assim, diversos parâmetros do processo que afetam a solidificação no molde devem ser considerados e um deles é a oscilação do molde. A partir de amostras da face estreita de placas obtidas no processo industrial, duas técnicas para avaliar o efeito da oscilação foram desenvolvidas com base em perfilometria a laser e metalografia. Em relação à perfilometria a laser, desenvolveuse um método de análise da profundidade das marcas de oscilação. Foi comprovada a correlação da profundidade média dessas marcas com o tempo de estripamento negativo. A segunda técnica refere-se ao ataque metalográfico à base de ácido pícrico, que se mostrou eficiente para visualização, via microscopia ótica, do gancho na base da marca de oscilação. Bolhas de argônio e partículas de pó fluxante podem ser aprisionadas na região do gancho de oscilação, e eventualmente ocasionar defeitos nos produtos laminados. The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM mining a pair of subway tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations and modern buildings on deep foundations, one constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, and technical basis for excavation support and tunneling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans, geotechnical baseline report development, and risk management will also be discussed.

A computerized heuristic model for an efficient and economic design of belt haulage networks in underground coal mines is discussed. The model is versatile, easy to use, and is valid for all mining methods singly or in combination. It may be used to design new networks or to analyze existing networks. The input data required are 1. maximum production rates from a section, 2. probabilities of production rates, 3. equipment costs, and 4. data necessary for network coding to represent different cases. The objective function is the "expected minimum cost per ton of coal hauled" while meeting production requirements. The output includes belt width, motor horsepower, bin size etc. and also values of operating parameters for each belt such as belt speed, effective tension, power consumption etc. A detailed account of the cost involved is also provided for each unit as well as for the entire network. Description of the model and an example of the design of a belt network in a mine with two longwall and four development sections are presented.

A Outotec está desenvolvendo em escala piloto o queimador de baixa emissão de NOx desde 2012, resultados expressivos foram atingidos (o pedido de Patente já foi depositado). Em 2014 utilizando simulações CFD, os resultados atingidos em escala piloto foram reproduzidos com boa aderência e os resultados em escala industrial se mostram com os mesmos comportamentos em tendências dos resultados da escala piloto, se mostrando promissores também. O presente trabalho apresenta os passos de desenvolvimento, os promissores resultados e o próximo passo deste desenvolvimento é realizar um teste em escala industrial com o queimador desenvolvido.
