MANPOWER RESOURCES The optimisation of human effort has been an ongoing and significant process in the coal industry since industrialisation as we know it began. The extent to which the changes sought have been achieved has, over the years, been in the main determined by the economic and political forces existing at that time and the determination and character of the individuals involved. The question of optimisation is therefore not new in our industry. Hopefully this presentation will demonstrate to the reader the effect of previous measures adopted by industry to optimise all facets of its operation and in particular that of the human Resource.

A melting process was developed by which high purity electrolytic uranium crystals can be converted into sound ingots without serious contamination. Careful preparation of the crystals, melting in a high vacuum, and directional solidification led to a metal of better than 99.993 wt pct purity. The metallographic examination showed a substantially clean metal with only residual amounts of a second phase which responded to heat treatment. The density of high purity uranium is 19.05 g per cu cm. FOR the study of the fundamental properties of uranium and its alloys, a base metal of high purity is needed, and an investigation was started at Argonne several years ago to examine various methods of preparing high purity uranium. Early success was achieved by the fused salt electrolysis process in preparing high purity metal in crystal form,' and the problem became that of melting the crystals into ingots without contamination. The electrolytic crystals contained a few ppm of heavy metals, less than 15 ppm C, and large quantities of potassium and lithium in the form of trapped fused salt electrolyte. On melting in vacuo in magnesia or urania crucibles, the metal picked up considerable quantities of carbon and some iron, copper, and silicon but lost most of the potassium and lithium. It was not metallographically clean, and much research work was necessary to determine the optimum melting conditions for minimum contamination. This work has resulted in the development of a melting procedure by which sound ingots can be prepared with only a limited contamination by carbon. In the section entitled "Melting of the Electrolytic Metal," the equipment and processes that have been developed for melting the electrolytic crystals are described in detail. The "Metallography" section is devoted to the metallography of high purity uranium, and the section "Density of High Purity Uranium" contains the first property measurement on high purity uranium—a density determination. Melting of the Electrolytic Metal Apparatus—Melting and Vacuum Equipment: Uranium may be melted in either resistance or induction-type electric furnaces. Resistance heating was found to be preferable to induction heating for melting down the electrolytic crystals, for several reasons: Although induction heating permits fast heating, this advantage cannot be utilized when crucibles with limited thermal shock resistance are used. Temperature control of induction-heated melts is poor, and the stirring effect increases the rate of contamination of the melt from the crucible, slag, or the furnace atmosphere; liquation and controlled solidification are difficult to carry out. Because of these objections, resistance heating was chosen. A 10 kw Globar resistance furnace of low heat capacity permitted uniform heating of a uranium charge to its melting point in 45 min. The furnace was insulated with a removable aluminum shield so that, after melting and removal of the shield, the furnace could be quickly cooled to room temperature. The furnace was equipped with an apparatus for directional solidification; see Fig. la. The crucible was suspended in the center of the furnace; and when the melting was complete, the crucible was slowly lowered into the cold end of the furnace tube. Solidification took place upward from the bottom; and when the rate of lowering was small, a sound ingot free from sink holes and shrinkage cavities was produced. To remove the large quantities of gas contained in the electrolytic crystals, melting in a high vacuum is mandatory. While, from the standpoint of contamination, melting in a highly purified argon atmosphere appeared feasible, lithium and potassium removal proved less efficient under such conditions. Also, a vacuum-melted ingot has a cleaner surface than one melted in an inert atmosphere. The vacuum system must be of very high pumping speed and leak tight so that a vacuum of less than 2x10-7 mm Hg is attainable when the system is pumped down cold. The system must have a high pumping speed, so that the pressure maximum which may rise to 1x10-4 mm during heating can be quickly reduced

Raw non fuel minerals produced in the United States during 1981 had an estimated value of $25 billion, about the same as that of 1980. In terms of 1980 dollars. the value of minerals produced during 1981 was $23 billion.2 This chapter includes tables for 1980 that were not available for publication in the 1980 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include the corresponding tables for 1981. The underlying causes of the overall decline in U.S. nonfuel mine production during 1981 were varied, but the common factor was the worldwide recession. In some cases the decline was traced to foreign competition. For example, iron ore production was lower in part because of increased imports of steel products such as coiled steel sheet. Another problem experienced by the domestic mining industry was the continuing difficulty in attracting capital. This was due in part to the attractiveness of investments outside the mining industry, such as short-term, high-interest securities. Another reason was the importation of commodities from countries where overall costs were lower because of such factors as high ore grade, lower taxes, lower wages, government subsidies, and less stringent safety and environmental regulations.

Australasian mining companies expect a high standard of professionalism from their metals exploration teams. They also have, increasingly, a global perspective, employing explorationists of diverse cultural backgrounds and operating in diverse environments. Human resource development (HRD) of these professional explorationists needs to address all personal facets of functioning independently and interdependently in a modem working culture, as well as the needed technical competency. Creation of a learning organisation to promote this development is critical. Organisational consultants can support managers and supervisors as mentors facing the wide spectrum of development required by the explorationists; mentorship and guidance counselling can then complement training in the maturing of professionals from technical competence to professional independence and interdependence. Empowerment and clearly stated expectations are keys by which professionals can learn efficiently and effectively.

Industrial complexes rely on measurements of flow rates, qualities, and concentrations for monitoring and optimizing their operation. Corporations use the data from the various sensors and measurements to make business decisions, which affect the profitability of the operation. However, gross errors, due to a variety of reasons like faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration, or incorrect process models may corrupt the actionable information supplied to operations, quality managers, and maintenance personnel. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools to model the process, sift through the available data to locate the gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to validate the sensors and instruments. In this way the data are unified to give the most accurate plant information for use by the monitoring and decision making processes. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All of these depend on reliable and accurate data. The data unification methods validate the individual measurements by using the concept of balances and statistical techniques where each instrument is no longer independent of the other measurements in the facility. This paper refers to the data unification and analysis methods required for profitable plant operations. Continuous improvement and monitoring of the measurement system at the plant and analysis of the reconciled data provide the best information for the decision-making process. On-line gross error detection and elimination methods are required to ensure efficient evaluation of process performance and process optimization. An open discussion of the new methods for gross error detection and data unification will be presented.

"IntroductionIN THE preceding paper we have learned about Canada's resources of metallurgical coal. There is an adequate amount in Nova Scotia, a very large reserve on the eastern flank of the Rocky mountains, and a strictly limited supply on the Pacific coast. Added to these is an unknown quantity of coking coal in the Peace River district, at present rather isolated but possibly capable of industrial development in the future.The chief use of metallurgical coal is to make iron and steel. For this, an adequate supply of iron ore is required. So we should now scan the Canadian supply of iron ore, the possibility of its increasing use at home, and the probable markets abroad.Trade in iron ore tends to be international, as is the case with many other raw materials. The present tendency with iron and steel, in contrast, is to keep its manufacture within national boundaries, and there is no evidence that this will change much in the years to come. We should keep these two points clearly in mind when considering the disposal of iron ore from Canadian mines. We should remember, also, that the modern blast furnace and steel plant has such a large output that a correspondingly large population, reasonably compact, is needed to consume its products.Large Ore Supply in East, Small in WestCanada has now four major iron ore fields, well situated to serve adequately the eastern half of the country. Wabana .and Labrador are well placed to serve overseas markets and plants on the eastern seaboard and eastern interior of the United States and Canada."

The leaching of indium from refractory zinc oxide flue dust(ZOFD) is attempted to utilize microwave sulfating roasting process, followed by water leaching. The ZOFD and roasted product were characterized by XRD and SEM/EDS analysis. The effects of various roasting parameters, such as roasting temperature/duration, the proportion of sulfuric acid, as well as the leaching parameters such as the leaching duration and liquid/solid ratio, were assessed. The results indicate that nearly 97% of indium could be leached under the following conditions: mass ratio of concentrated sulfuric acid to ZOFD to be 0.5, roasting temperature of 150 ℃ and duration of 1.5 hours; while the optimal leaching conditions hold at temperature of 25 ℃ for 1 hour, with 4:1 of liquid/solid ratio. The indium leaching rate by the microwave roasting increased by 8% as compared with the conventional roasting process under identical conditions.

Over the years as surface mining operations have become more sophisticated, angle drilling has become a more popular blast design technique, especially in areas where overburden and stripping ratios have increased. Another method of blast design is the staggered pattern, which greatly improves explosives distribution within the blast. While both methods present some engineering challenges, this paper will discuss how the two methods can be combined to enhance fragmentation, improve cast percentage, drill production ratios and highwall control. A practical engineering approach will be presented as well as a discussion on the discipline required to maintain a quality blasting plan.

The simultaneous use of two or more families of collectors can sometimes improve one or more key flotation performance indicators, especially if the ore under consideration contains several minerals bearing the same metal. The maximum amount of collectors that can be used is limited by the need to maintain a high concentrate grade and selectivity. Therefore, when more than one collector is required, an experimental design that allows variations of both the proportions and the amounts with respect to other process factors has to be selected to find the optimum dosage. This type of design is known as "process factors in mixture amount experiment". It is a powerful design suitable for discovering the existence and evaluating the magnitude of the interactive effects between various flotation parameters. This paper elaborates the principles on which such a design is based, and demonstrates its usefulness with a case study.

Actual observations of rockburst damage, together with some theoretical considerations, strongly suggest that conventional approaches to the design of tunnel support are inappropriate where there is a significant seismic risk. The present widely used support systems, which are based on stiff, fully grouted re-bars, are inadequate where rock displacement velocities exceed 1 m/s. It is shown by means of a simple conceptual model that yielding of the support elements is essential to ensure their survival when they are subject to the high strain rates typical of severe rockbursts. The model proposes that the total load in the element is an impulsive tensile force imposed and sustained by a single 'tributary' block ejected from the tunnel wall. The stability of the system is determined from a comparison of the kinetic energy developed by the block with the energy of deformation absorbed by a grouted steel tendon. A novel test procedure was developed for the validation of this approach, and for an examination of the energy-absorbing capacity of stiff and yielding tendons. The results of an initial series of tests showed that the recently developed cone-bolt is an effective yielding device. It absorbs twenty times more impulsive-load energy than is consumed by the complete fracture of grouted re-bar of equivalent strength, and it remains totally unscathed. Importantly, the results demonstrate that the ejection model is not merely an explanatory concept, but can be used as a representative and valid design method.

Scientific knowledge of Mars’ surface morphology and internal geological structure has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander. Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults are existed and formed regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. We focus on the linear relationship between the fault spacing and the thickness of the mechanical layer as an approach to studying the internal structure from satellite images. Mechanical layer is a layer that composes of the same mechanical properties and is mainly bounded by lithology (Narr, 1991; Gross, 1993). The linear relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the joint spacing has been studied and its slope is called the Fracture-Spacing Index (FSI) (Narr and Suppe, 1991). Soliva, Benedicto and Maerten (2006) showed that the stress drop zone (stress shadow) due to the fault activities affects the fault spacing. Figure 1 shows the approach used to estimate the thickness of the mechanical layer from the fault spacing on Mars. This paper aims to better understand the internal mechanical structure of Mars estimated by the geometrical pattern of faults on the Martian surface. We report the initial studies of this work. The lab-scale physical experiments and numerical experiments were presented to demonstrate the relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the geometric pattern of fractures

MINING, to be precise, ends when the ore is delivered to a bin outside the mine. Usually the next step is concentrating; or, as it is more often called, milling. A few elementary definitions will help make clear the discussion that is to follow. A rock is an aggregate of minerals; copper ore is rock that contains copper-bearing minerals in quantity sufficient to make it profitable to mine and recover the copper in the form of marketable metal. Manifestly, under a literal interpretation, a mass of material might be copper ore one day and merely copper-bearing waste rock a week later, if the price of copper happened to drop in the interim. Emphasis already has been placed on the expansion that took place in the ore reserves of the Porphyry companies as a consequence of the great strides made in the technique of mining and ore treatment. So, even if one inserted a qualifying phrase, "at an average price for the metal," after the word "profitable," the definition would still be open to criticism. Place is another factor. It is evident that a body of excellent ore in Arizona might cease to be ore in the economic sense if it were moved intact to the interior of China. However, it is with ore in its technical and scientific aspect that this chapter is concerned. Speaking in general terms, the ton of Porphyry ore as it arrives at the surface contains 25 to 70 lb. of copper minerals in the form of disseminated particles or thin coats along fracture planes. When subjected to appropriate treatment this ton yields 12 to 40 lb. of metallic copper. These ranges take into account conditions of today and of 25 years ago. Two procedures are available: (1) concentration, followed by smelting of the concentrate, or (2) leaching and precipitation, usually by electrolytic deposition. "Ed Rapp is among those who believe in the saying that necessity is the mother of all invention. Rapp is the president of Caterpillar’s mining group. As such, he is tasked with leading the world’s largest mining equipment maker, and its customers, through this time of lower commodity prices, while also positioning his company to be prepared for better days that lie ahead.The decade-long mining boom fueled by growth in emerging markets and demand for commodities that led to record prices for some metals paused in 2008 with the global financial crisis. However, according to Rapp, thanks to stimulus packages around the world, and in particular the stimulus from China that was focused on infrastructure, the mining sector recovered fairly quickly, and from 2010 to 2012, mining was strong.And then the stimulus stopped. Credit dried up and global growth began to slow down and, in the three years since, commodity prices have declined by an average of 60 percent. Caterpillar expanded during the boom, acquiring Bucyrus, and investing billions into the mining sector. It has felt the pinch of the slowdown as much as any mining company in the world. These pages, and those of other mining publications as well as mainstream media, have been filled with stories of doom and gloom about the industry. But Rapp, while acknowledging that the difficult times have been painful, also said Caterpillar sees opportunity in the slow down and reaffirmed his company’s commitment to the mining industry as absolute."

THE development reported in this paper was begun by the author a number of years ago, while he was a lecturer on complex chemistry and metallurgy at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and in charge of that institution's research laboratory. Completion of the development and reduction to practice did not occur until last year at the Westport mill, laboratories and testing plant of the Dorr Company, where this method is now in general use for identifying and localizing the mineral constituents of both metallic and nonmetallic ores. It has proved to be a practical tool of the metallurgical staff at the Westport mill, devising unusual milling flowsheets for complex and refractory ore bodies. In a number of instances the findings have been successfully used as fundamental factors in the design and specification of complete metallurgical plants. Seven examples of the use of this method in solving practical milling problems are included in this paper. GENERAL OUTLINE The microscopic study of an ore, at first only of scientific interest, has proved extremely useful both in practical geology and in ore dressing. The binocular magnifying lenses for rough observation of the products of an ore-dressing plant have been in use for a long time; but only within the last few years has a systematic microscopical examination of ore samples become a normal tool of any research laboratory dealing with ore-dressing problems. Such an investigation avoids considerable loss of time as well as empirical trials and useless experimentation. It will generally indicate the correct grinding and often will suggest the proper method of treatment. The petrographic determination of transparent minerals in thin sections, or even in grains, has been perfected, and very accurate methods have been devised to meet any requirement, such as Feodorof's rotating stage on the petrographic microscope. Almost all transparent minerals can be positively identified by their optical properties; i.e., isotropism, anisotropism, color, pleochroism, refractory index, cleavage, crystal form, birefringence, and others. The identification of opaque minerals is a much more difficult problem and can be done only by using polished specimens. Unfortunately, most of the valuable metallic ores, and even some of the nonmetallic ones, are not transparent; therefore it has been necessary to develop a special technique for the determination of these minerals. Some optical properties-for instance, isotropism, anisotropism, color, cleavage, reflecting power-are often adequate in roughly classifying the mineral. Only "reflecting power" is a measurable value, provided special photometric equipment (ocular photometer or Orcel's photoelectric cell) is available. The use of rock bolts for the support and stabilization of coal mining excavations was introduced over 30 years ago and, since that time, has progressively increased until today it is the primary means of support and stabilization of large underground openings. Early analytical studies and work with photoelastic and physical models established that even highly fragmented rock could be stabilized by rock bolting and form a load-carrying structural member that would span an opening. For stability, interaction of the bolts is essential and it depends on the bolt tension, the length and spacing of the bolts, the characteristics of the rock, and the applied load. However, the development of an explicit functional relationship embracing all these factors proved to be elusive. A review of the early rock bolting investigations led to the concept that the basic element of a rock bolted roof is the reinforced rock unit (RRU), consisting of an individual bolt and the rock immediately surrounding and adjacent to it, and to the development of mathematical equations which give the minimum bolt tension required to ensure that the RRU's are stable relative to one another and act together as a structural member. Analytical procedures have been developed for integrating RRU's into a reinforced rock structural (beam-arch) member which spans an underground opening and providing a rational basis for the design and installation of rock reinforcement systems.

In order to improve the oxidation resistance of Cr–Mo–V steel for high-speed railway brake discs, a higher Cr was added to the steel. Effect of temperature on the oxidation behavior of brake disc steel with different Cr contents was studied by OM, SEM and XRD. The results show that the oxidation curves at 500 °C obey a linear oxidation law in 0–2 h and 2–20 h, respectively. The oxide layer is thin and the oxidation products are Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. The oxidation curve at 700 °C follows a linear law within 2 h. With the oxidation time extending, the oxidation curves follow a parabolic law and the oxide layer becomes thicker. Moreover, the oxide layer is divided into two layers. The outer oxide layer is loose and is mainly Fe2O3, while the inner layer is denser and consists of FeO and FeCr2O4. The oxide layer thickness reduces and the oxidation resistance of the steel is improved with Cr content is increased.

Equilibrium studies on the extraction of nickel and cobalt with kerosine solutions of naphthenic acid have shown that an exchange extraction reaction occurs at pH 5.5. The nickel/cobalt separation factor is constant at 1.8 for constant total metal molarity and varying nickel/cobalt ratios. The separation factor decreases with increasing total metal molarity in the organic phase beyond 0.2 M and also decreases with increasing temperature. From the equilibrium data, it has been possible to derive a mathematical model for the separation of nickel from cobalt by exchange extraction in multistage systems. Experimental data from a continuously operated multistage mixer/settler apparatus has shown a reasonable correspondence with computer-calculated data. The effective separation of nickel and cobalt in sulfate solution remains a problem in hydrometallurgy and the hope that this would be solved by solvent extraction has not yet been fulfilled. With chloride solutions, advantage may be taken of the ability of cobalt to form anionic complexes with the chloride ion. It can then be readily separated from nickel, which does not form stable chloro complexes, by extraction with a suitable long chain amine. However, in hydro metallurgical operations, sulfate solutions are generally obtained in which no extractable anionic species are present. Thus, the possibility of using cationic extractants must be considered, and in this paper attention is directed to the use of carboxylic acids. The method of separation studied has been termed exchange extraction, which involves replacement of a metal in the organic phase with a more acidic metal in the aqueous phase. Thus, (BR2).+ (Az+)aqt=(AR,).+ (B2+)aq (I) where metal A is more acidic than metal B, R represents the acidic radical derived from the acid RH, and the subscripts e and aq refer to the organic and aqueous phases, respectively. Ashbrook and Ritcey' have used this method for the separation of cobalt from nickel using the sodium salt of di-2 ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid, which preferentially extracts cobalt. Some nickel is coextracted, and this is removed by exchange with cobalt ions in the feed solution by suitable countercurrent operation in a pulsed column. Much work has been carried out by a number of workers in Russia on the general use of exchange extraction for the separation of metal ions using car-boxylic acids. Gindin et aL a have demonstrated that this technique could be applied to the separation of nickel from cobalt using a C--C. carboxylic acid and have applied the technique to the production of high purity cobalt solutions for electrolysis. Further worka was concerned with the development of a process for the separation of nickel from cobalt in a pulsed column. This system permitted the separation of iron and copper from nickel and cobalt in one system. The procedure involved center feeding with acid backwashing at the top and alkali addition lower down the column. Thus the system operated under a pH gradient and the metals were distributed in the column in the order of their basicities. A similar application was studied by Gel'perin et al,4,5 for the removal of copper and iron impurities from a nickel anolyte by means of a C10-C,12 fatty acid fraction. Ginden et al,' and Fletcher and Wilson' have studied the effect of pH on the extraction of a number of metals with carboxylic acids. These studies showed that metals such as iron, copper, lead, zinc, nickel cobalt, and manganese are extracted at pH values close to the pH of hydroxide precipitation. Nickel is extracted at a slightly lower pH than cobalt and thus the nickel/cobalt separation factor has a value not much greater than 1. More basic work on complex identification has been reported by Fletcher and Flett: by Tanaka; and Jay-cock and Jones." These studies have suggested that at low loadings in the organic phase, the nickel and cobalt carboxylates appear to be dimeric and solvated by free carboxylic acid molecules. The Ranger Uranium Mine is located in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics approximately 250 km east of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia (Figure 1). Mining of open-cut ore bodies commenced in 1980 (Pit 1) and ceased in 2012 (Pit 3) and milling and production are scheduled to cease by 2021. At the conclusion of mining and milling operations, mine tailings will be returned to the mined out pits 1 and 3, which must then be physically isolated from the environment for at least 10,000 years (Australian Government 1999). The final landform also needs to have sufficient mitigation measures in place to ensure that areas downstream are not impacted by erosion products from the mine site. The proposed post-mining rehabilitated landform will cover approximately 847 hectares (8.5 km2) which represents an area that has the potential to supply sediment to catchments and streams downstream. One method of reducing runoff and associated sediment is the construction of rip lines along the contour to slow down the runoff velocity and to also trap fine sediment and nutrients in the depressions to assist vegetation growth.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Lowry, J B C, 2018.
