The first reinforced earth railway bridge abutment in China has been successfully constructed of September, 1985 under the supervision of the Reinforced Earth Researth Group of Shanghai Institute of Railway Technology. In order to verify the reliability of the designed structure and its behaviuors, the 1:10 reduced scale model tests in laboratory and field tests on the actual structure during construction were proceeded. Various loads of different positions were charged, the vertical and lateral earth pressure in the filling soil, the stresses developed in the reinforcements, and the deformations of the models or the actual structure were recorded in those tests. The behaviors recorded are presented and discussed in this paper.

Enhanced concern for protection of the environment and attendant actions by environmental regulatory authorities in support of this concern are influencing to varying degrees the demand and supply of a range of industrial minerals in a number of jurisdictions. These influences take a variety of forms. In this paper, the author seeks to delineate certain broad trends which are occurring relative to industrial minerals and the environment and then, through a series of examples, outline opportunities, developments, and impacts respecting a number of industrial minerals produced and consumed in Canada and the United States.

THIS investigation was undertaken as a prerequisite to the study of sulphur activities in the liquid system Fe-Cu-Ni, a continuation of the work of Sherman, Elvander, and Chipman,¹ using the same equipment and the same experimental technique. Temperature measurements are made with a disappearing filament optical pyrometer, sighting through a prism onto the surface of the melt which is heated by induction. To obtain true temperatures by this means, a calibration is necessary, since, in the absence of true black-body conditions, the observed temperature is always lower than the true temperature. This calibration is actually an emissivity correction, since the emissivity is a function of both temperature and melt composition. The original furnace was used with a deeper metal bath to provide sufficient depth of immersion for the thermocouple which was inserted through the sampling hole. The atmosphere was a 50-50 mixture or argon and hydrogen passing through the furnace at a rate of 1000 ml per min, and preheated by means of a molybdenum resistance coil. It was assumed that the rapid gas flow effectively eliminated any error which might have resulted from the presence of metallic vapor. The charge in each case consisted of about 300 g of metal, contained in a high purity, dense alumina crucible. At each melt composition, readings of the optical pyrometer and of a thermocouple immersed in the molten metal were taken simultaneously. Calibration curves of optical vs. true temperature were then made for each melt composition investigated. Thermocouples were made of 0.010 in. platinum and platinum-10 pct rhodium. They were checked against the melting point of chemically pure copper. Silica protection tubes with an outer diameter of approximately 1/8 in. were used. The depth of immersion of the tip in the molten metal was approximately 1 14 in. The life of these small thermocouples was relatively short, varying from approximately 1 min at 1550°C to 10 min or longer at 1300°C. Melts containing iron corroded the protection tubes more than those without iron present. Measurements taken while heating checked those taken while cooling, indicating the absence of a temperature gradient between the molten metal and the thermocouple. Results The temperature range of the. measurements on copper-free metals extended from the melting point to 1600°C. For copper the upper limit was 1380°C, and the data were extrapolated linearly for comparison with observations on the other metals and alloys at 1535°C. Examples of typical calibration curves for various melt compositions are shown in Fig. 1. These curves, besides providing a calibration system for the given experimental conditions, also give a basis for the calculation of true emissivities at the effective wavelength of the pyrometer, 0.65 micron. The starting point of the calculations is the value of the emissivity of iron at its melting point. Taking the melting point of electrolytic iron under hydrogen as 1535°C, and using the corresponding emissivity value of 0.43, as determined by Dastur and Gokcen,² the emissivities can be determined as functions of composition (and temperature, if desired). The relationship used is the Wien equation: ln(Ea)=C2/?(1/T1-1/Ta where E is the emissivity; a, the transmissivity of the optical system; C,, the fundamental constant, 14,380 micron-degrees; A, the wave length of light used (0.65 micron); Tt, the true temperature, OK; and T., the apparent temperature, OK. At the melting point of iron the observed temperature was 1358"; this gives 0.62 for the transmissivity, which compares with 0.65 in the similar system used by Dastur and Gokcen. The emissivities of all the compositions investigated were determined at 1535°C, after obtaining from each calibration curve the corresponding temperature. These results

A proper management system of coal mine methane gas associated with underground mining activities is essential for the mine safety due to its nature of explosion. Optimum design of the mine ventilation and gas drainage need accurate prediction of gas flow rate emitted by mining activities. Permeability to gas, which is affected by stress conditions of surrounding rock mass, governs the emission rate of the gases. JCOAL has developed a three dimensional FEM simulation program named Mine Gas Flow 3D (MGF-3D). MGF-3D is designed to predict the volume of methane gas emitted from surrounding coal and rock seams based on stress distribution and permeability change which are determined by 3D stress analysis. In MGF-3D, stress change and/or expansion of fractured zone affected by mining is calculated at the first and then gas emission into roadways and longwall panels under the determined stress conditions is calculated using Darcy’s law. MGF-3D also can set up a number of pre-drainage holes and estimate drainage gas volume from each hole. This function makes MGF-3D remarkable program. These simulations for gas emission can contribute to mine gas utilization plan. Comparison between actual measurement of gas emission in the underground mine and simulation results has been performed and availability for the mine safety and problems with MGF-3D are discussed in this report.

In extracting base metals from orebodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries, on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environ-mental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur, despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur are emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coalmines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Key Structure Holdings have developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful by-product of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available, the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen, the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulphate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

JUDGING from the attitude of past and present Parliaments in Australia, it is a' reasonable assumption that encouragement of the principal industries has been adopted as a main principle in the government of the country, but while in most cases bonuses, subsidies, and other means have been proved successful and become recognized as established methods in the case of mining, which is undoubtedly one of the most important industries, the question is complicated by difference of conditions and variable quantities, and it can scarcely be said that any system has been proved generally successful. Indeed, it would not be a very extravagant statement to assert that problems connected with affording direct monetary assistance in aid of mining development, and at the same time devising a system adaptable to the varying conditions to be met, are, in every State of the Oommonwealth, matters continually exercising the minds of those concerned in providing and ailocating such assistance ie Parliament on the one hand, and the Department of Mines on the other.True, there are methods in vogue of granting State assistance to the mining industry which have undoubtedly been successful, but it is in most cases questionable whether the beneficial results following successful expenditure in one direction have compensated.

Geologic studies for the Federal and State governments in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district were begun in 1835, and subse¬quent surveys were made in the three states at in¬tervals until 1916, see Table I. The current study of the district, Fig. 1, by the U. S. Geological Survey was begun in 1942 in the hope that a systematic investigation would help in¬crease production of zinc and lead, then in ex¬tremely short supply. Major emphasis of the USGS program was on detailed mapping of the geologic structure and ore deposits. Preliminary maps and reports covering localities of intensive mining ac¬tivity have been published during the course of this study, Fig. 2. By 1950 the objectives of the study by the USGS were revised; 7Y2-min quadrangles of relatively unprospected localities as well as inten¬sively mined localities are now being mapped in Wisconsin. Since 1945 the investigation in Wiscon¬sin has been made in cooperation with the Wiscon¬sin Geological and Natural History Survey, and since 1951 the geologic mapping of areas of particu¬lar interest in Iowa has been performed in coopera¬tion with the Iowa Geological Survey. At intervals since 1943 the Illinois State Geological Survey has mapped the geologic structure and ore deposits of localities in the Illinois part of the mining district, see Fig. 2.

A simulation of a capper concentrate smelter was built with a capacity of 450,000 tons per year. The system's components to simulate were three : a Reverbetory furnace, a Wiente ' s modified converter ( TMC ) and two cranes. The system was classified as dynamic, stochastic and discrete. In the simulation language choice it was concluded that the most advantageous one was GPSS/H. The model verification was done through the interactive Debugger that the language has and the statistical validation was done through the result variables of sane activities, that as a whole characterize the system (charged matte and charged concentrate to the TMC, skimming white metal and skimning slag). The validation was done comparing the simulation results of these variables with the ones obtained for those variables in a specific month in the smelter. The comparison consisted in a difference of means test and in all cases the equality was accepted with a 95% of confidence. The animation tool was PROOF, a general purpose animator, that is used after processing the simulation.

"Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business (CPB) is comprised of Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO) in Northern Ontario, Canada’s only operating phosphate mine, and Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO) in Alberta, which manufactures the fertilizer from KPO’s concentrate.Production from KPO’s South Pit commenced in 2009 and introduced contaminant problems: high aluminium from crandallite and kaolinite clays. These issues caused a drastic decrease in P2O5 recovery and throughput in both plants. KPO attempted to reduce Al clays by means of aggressive desliming. Meanwhile RPO experienced high amounts of dissolved metals in their feed that are detrimental to fertilizer production.This paper covers the mineralogy of the problem, its impact on contaminant separation at KPO, on RPO’s process and on Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business as a whole.Potential solutions to the problem are discussed and analysed, including a process change to deslime high aluminium streams more aggressively and high grade ore flotation, which is atypical at KPO. The latter is a demonstration of the value of communication between the concentrator and the client, as KPO accepted a recovery loss and increased production costs in order to increase overall CPB profits. General lessons learned are discussed, followed by a section on ore blending.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the existence of the Kapuskasing phosphate deposit has been known since the 1970s, it’s only since 1999 that Agrium has been operating the Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO). The mine consists of three major pits (Center, North and South) from which a mining contractor hauls the apatite ore to the Agrium concentrator. The beneficiation plant processes the ore, separating contaminants such as Fe, Mg and Al which are detrimental to its client, Agrium’s Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO). This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at 'any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used In this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the product of auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Research work in the Bureau of Mines cryogenic laboratory requires the use of high-sensitivity galvanometers of the d'Arsonval type in a building that is subject to unusually severe vibrations. A modified form of the galvanometer suspension described by Julius3 has damped the vibrations so successfully that a short note concerning it is thought to be desirable, The laboratory is on the site of the Amarillo helium plant near a building that houses gas engines of from 180 to 250 hp., driving compressors and electric generators. The distances from the galvanometers to the individual engines range from about 80 to 180 feet. The subsoil, consisting of black clay loam, transmits the impulses without much damping. The usual methods of protecting galvanometers from vibration were tried and proved fruitless. A Julius suspension purchased on the market was carefully installed in the hope that it would overcome the difficulty, but the conditions were too severe even for this elaborate arrangement. Several mudifications of the original Julius suspension, which were then introduced, resulted in almost complete elimination of all vibrational effects.

In hard rock mining, large-scale bulk mining methods such as block or panel caving (BC/PC) and sublevel caving (SLC) typically generate significant surface deformations such as subsidence. Surface deformations need to be considered in the project evaluation and planning stages of cave mines, for example, planning and location of critical underground mine planning infrastructure such as portals, haulage and vent shafts, access roads, or potential damage to existing infrastructure, changes to surface water management, waste dump, stockpile and tailings dam stability, and environmental impacts. Assessing the impact and risks associated with subsidence is a key component in robust mine planning and operations management.

At the last meeting of the Institute, several contributions were made to the subject of miners' aid funds. Such matters will always form important factors in the administration of large industrial enterprises. From the frequently remote and isolated position of mining properties, it is a subject that often forces itself upon the attention of the mining engineer. Local conditions are usually so variable that no single method can be found equally well adapted to all localities. At the same time, a study of different types is often suggestive and valuable, and it is with this in view that these notes are presented. The Miners' Fund of New Almaden is a remarkably successful example of what may be done for miners by a wise and at the same time firm management, by simply directing their own efforts and without incurring any great expense to the stockholders,—a practical consideration not without importance in most cases. ThE subject of elcctric signals for the despatching of mining cagey through shafts has received cousiderable attention recently from various mining companies. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. has found it necessary to develop a system that is rcliable, safe and simple in operation, and easy to repair. The movement of all mine cages or skips is under the direction of a station tender, who rides on the cages when men or supplies are being lowered or raised; when ore is hoisted, he is stationed at a skip pocket for loading and despatching the skips. For the station tender's use, two signal systems are installed in cach hoisting compartment, and he is the only employee authorized to use them. One system is known as the "AC " or station bells, as it is operated from the 110-volt, 60-cycle, power service; the other system, called the "DC" or shaft bells, takes its energy from closed-circuit primary batteries. As a supplemcnt to the two main signals, a buzzer system is installed The general arrangement is similar to the main signal, except that there is a mine buzzer at each station. When a signal switch connected into the buzzer system is pulled down, all buzzers arc operated, thus notifying the station tender that he is wanted at seine particular level. Placed on the station posts, and within easy reach of the men on the cages are the signal pull switches for the main signals. The station, or "AC," pull switches are furnished with a short rope as shown in Fig. I, while the shaft, or "DC," pull switches are equipped with ropes that extend down the shaft past the next station. To avoid all confusion in the use of the three signal systems, a standard arrangement has been adopted in all mines for the location of the pull switches. Fig 2 illustrates the position of the pull switch at the various mine stations for the main signal systems, but it does not show the buzzer pull switch; this is fixed to the roof timbers about 25 ft. back from the shaft. If the skip pockets are a considerable distance below the station, a pull switch for each main shaft compartment is connected to the "AC" system and placed at this point. However, if the distance is short, a light cord is attached to the station pull switches and dropped down to the skip pocket.

Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. ORIGINALLY the Babbitt experimental plant grinding circuit consisted of one rod mill 10 ½ ft diam by 12 ft long in open circuit followed by two ball mills 10 ½ ft diam* 12 ft long in parallel circuit. Shortly after operations commenced it was apparent that the rod mill could not function satisfactorily at the required 125 gross tons of ore per hr. Attempts to operate at this rate produced: 1) excessive tramp material over rod mill trommel screen which could not be handled in this open circuit and 2) excess build-up of coarse ore in the ball mill circuits because of inadequate rod mill grinding. Since Reserve Mining Co. ore must be ground to 85 pct -325 mesh to produce a satisfactory iron concentrate, an efficient and controlled grinding circuit is highly important. The first step in trying to resolve this grinding problem was to determine which unit of the circuit was actually in trouble and to what extent. A series of tests conducted at a lower tonnage rate of rod mill feed indicated that one ball mill could grind satisfactorily at rates up to 70 gross tons of rod mill feed per hr.

Onsite hazardous waste processors often find obtaining a Treatment Storage and Disposal (TSD) permit one of their first major challenges. Some processors may spend the time and money required by the permitting process, only to find out later that a permit was not necessary. This paper will present and analyze four strategies that processors may use to avoid obtaining a TSD permit. Some facilities will be able to remove their waste streams from RCRA's oversight by ensuring the material is not "hazardous" waste. Parties that treat waste while it is in process may be able to avoid generating "waste" altogether. Certain treatment facilities have been specifically exempted by EPA. Finally, treatment of waste while it is in generator storage tanks may be allowed without a RCRA TSD permit. Hazardous waste point of generation, an important determination relating to these strategies, will also be discussed. Generators and processors will find this paper useful when evaluating their permit exemption potential

The object of this paper is to show how igneous intrusion is governed by definite mechanical laws. A distinction is made between dikes and fissures, and the various characteristics of intrusions are explained on an exact scientific basis. The modification of rock-stresses by intrusion is then considered and extensive isostress regions are recognized. Finally, a complete classification of intrusions is constructed covering all possible cases. The generalizations of observed data, taken from Geikie's Text-Book of Geology, confornl to the laws of intrusion herein stated, and the deductions based upon these lams. No authority, however, is quoted for the type which I hare named a corrugated intrusion. Its existence is a necessary deduction from the laws of intrusion, and even the entire absence of examples in technical publications cannot disprove its reality. In all probability, corrugated fissures would have remained undiscovered, but for the nrorking of mineral veins. As intrusions of tabular form are seldom worked for commercial purposes, it has been left for theory to anticipate the discovery of corrugated dikes. In the light of these laws of intrusion and the corresponding laws of fissures,' there seems to be a remarkable uniformity of stress-distribution in rocks at moderate depths. This renders possible the mathematical calculation which should help us to approximate exact science in this and kindred branches of applied geology.
