THE most outstanding property of ammonia liquors, used in the ammonia leaching process is their very limited ability to dissolve all compounds present in reduced ore except nickel and cobalt. Although they do have such a high degree of purity, even the smallest amounts of impurities contaminate the precipitate of basic nickel carbonate that may be obtained from pregnant liquors by straight distillation. Figures have been given in a separate paper regarding the extent of such contamination. The product of straight distillation is likely to contain small amounts of Fe, Mn, MgO and SiO2 as well as some sulphate and sulphide. The sulphur can be readily eliminated by calcination of the product at the proper temperature and MgO and SiO2 by reduction and melting of the metal with a suitable flux. After such treatment the metal is relatively pure, and the iron and manganese content will be very small. The cobalt content, however, may vary considerably, depending upon the ore treated. The metal obtained from pure true garni-erite ores usually has only a small cobalt content of less than 1 pct. Metal obtained from medium grade iron-rich nickel ores may show cobalt values from 2 to 3 pct, and the alloy obtained from laterite is likely to contain as much as 10 pct cobalt. By proper treatment a good deal of cobalt may be recovered from lateritic nickeliferous iron ores, and cobalt will become the major constituent of the pregnant liquor if asbolan ores or similar products are treated. The pregnant liquor of "run of mine" nickel ores may have a pinkish shade, indicating the presence of cobalt. It is evident that from such liquors the metals should be recovered separately. Even if cobalt is present in only very small amounts, it would probably be economically justifiable to recover both metals as pure as possible if a suitable process could be devised. The author has made investigations along this line and has patented some processes adapted to the treatment of this type of solutions. Selective Dissolution of Nickel from Basic Nickel Carbonate Containing Some Cobalt: Basic nickel carbonate obtained from true garnierite ores by straight distillation of the pregnant liquors, always contains some cobalt as well as the normal impurities. In. order to improve the quality of the nickel product and to recover most of the cobalt, the following process has been devised. By using liquors with a low CO2 to NH3 ratio, nickel can be redis-solved preferentially to cobalt. It is not a sharp and clean separation but a selective one, for the bulk of the nickel may be redissolved with a small amount of cobalt, and a small residue may hold the bulk of the cobalt. The greatly increased cobalt content of the residue is indicated by a pronounced olive green color, in contrast with the light green color of pure basic nickel carbonate. The following example is given from Dutch patent No. 52788, Klasse 40a. 43 granted June 17, 1942: The original precipitate contained about 0.55 pct cobalt calculated on total nickel + cobalt. Eight hundred and fifty grams of the basic nickel carbonate were redissolved in leach liquor containing 7.12 pct NH3 and 2.12 pct CO2. The weight of the dry residue was about 3.5 pct of the original weight. By analysis it was found that the residue contained: Fe 1.93 pct, Co 6.01 pct, Ni 34.87 pct and also a certain amount of silica. The clear filtered blue liquor was distilled and the precipitate of basic nickel carbonate from this analyzed: Fe 0.008 pct, Co 0.0146 pct, Ni 42.37 pct. A novel ilmenite collector, tert-butyl benzoic hydroxamic acid (TBHA), was investigated in this paper. The flotation performance and adsorption mechanism of TBHA to ilmenite were evaluated through pure mineral flotation tests, ?-potential measurement and IR spectrum analysis. The experiment results indicated that TBHA exhibited strong collecting capability to ilmenite under pH 6.0-8.5. At pH 7.0-10.0, TBHA existed in the form of anionic species in aqueous solution, and the ?-potential measurement results showed the surface of ilmenite maintained negative and more negative after the adsorption TBHA on it, which inferred that TBHA might adsorb on the surface of ilmenite through chemical interaction. The IR spectrum analysis further confirmed the chemical interaction between TBHA and ilmenite surface. The success of any blast is dependent on the accuracy of the blast design and field controls placed at the shot location. The procedure by which the data is collected and analyzed is paramount to accomplishing the anticipated blast results. lf the geometry of the blast is not measured correctly, then the results will not meet expectations. Measuring the geometry and compensating for bole hole deviations is crucial not only to the lnitlal blast but also for any consecutive blasts. Excessive bore hole deviation can cancel any new technology in use. However the instruments and skills required solving this Issue are readily available.

This paper identifies the components of belt conveyor shifting force as a vertical force. Pv, horizontal force, Ph, and longitudinal force, P1. A method for estimation of these forces is proposed, which relates their value to the properties of the conveyor structure and rails, shifting operation parameters, and other site-specific conditions. The effect of this force on shifter behaviour is analysed and guidelines are developed for selection of a suitable shifter. Also discussed are the requirements of the shifting operation for other equipment.

"Zinc metal is primarily produced by electrowinning from sulfate solution. Zinc electrowinning is very sensitive to impurities such as Co and Ni. These impurities have to be removed to produce high-quality zinc and maintain a high zinc current efficiency. Zinc dusts are used to remove these impurities by cementation. However cobalt cementation is extremely slow and it is typically activated by the addition of Cu and Sb. Even with the use of Cu-Sb activation, cobalt is still difficult to remove. The zinc dust used for cobalt cementation is negligible compared to that consumed for hydrogen evolution. In some plants up to 6-7% of electrolytic zinc is used for cementation. This is a great waste of energy. Cu-Sb activation is not well understood. The objective of this study was to further understand the Cu-Sb activation and then find a way to reduce hydrogen evolution and promote cobalt cementation. The investigation reveals how hydrogen evolution (or zinc dissolution) and cobalt cementation and re-dissolution change with temperature, zinc dust dosage, the concentrations of copper and antimony and time. In the Cu-Sb activation, copper is deposited on a zinc particle to produce a porous shell. The zinc particle as an anode dissolves while the shell as a cathode provides a place where cobalt cementation and hydrogen evolution occur and they are catalyzed by antimony. A certain level of antimony (around 0.1 mg/L) is a key to maintain the catalytic effect of the shell. At a higher antimony concentration, cobalt cementation is accelerated slightly while hydrogen evolution is increased greatly. When a zinc particle dissolves to a certain degree, cobalt loses its cathodic protection and starts to re-dissolve. The change in cobalt concentration is determined by the rates of cobalt cementation and re-dissolution. The operation conditions can be optimized to maximize the cobalt removal and minimize the zinc dust dosage.INTRODUCTIONMost of the world’s zinc metal is produced by electrowinning from sulfate media. Many impurities such as iron, copper, cobalt and nickel are co-extracted into solution with zinc. Iron, mercury, indium, lead and tin are removed by co-precipitation as hydroxides. Copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic and germanium are partially co-precipitated with iron while cadmium, magnesium and chloride remain in solution. Decreasing ore grades and increasing labor and material costs have seriously eroded the economic vitality of many mining operations. Coupled with global economic stagnation and recession in the early 1980's, these conditions have forced reevaluation of operating strategies and methodologies with the objective of remaining competitive in a world marketplace. A concept offering large potential benefits is hardrock portable crushing and conveying. Implementation of this system at Duval Corporation's Sierrita open pit copper-molybdenum mine (Figure 1) has significantly reduced mining costs, becoming a major part of Sierrita's cost reduction strategy. Located 48 km south of Tucson, Arizona, the 209 000 t/d property has one portable 60x89 gyratory ore-crusher in operation with tentative plans for two additional units.

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. The Palabora Mining Company has successfully extended the life of its operation by developing a 30,000tpd block cave underground mine below the now closed open pit. The process of transitioning from surface to underground mining has been technically, operationally and managerially challenging. This has been due to a number of factors; in particular, the development of a block cave in a very competent rock mass. The competence of the rock mass is clearly demonstrated in the open pit that preceded the block cave, one of the steepest deep open pit excavations in the world. With cave breakthrough, however, the pit was ?instantaneously? deepened by 400m causing a major failure of the northwest wall involving close to 100Mt of waste material.

Analysis of piles groups loaded with large bending moments and both vertical and batter piles can be best performed by matrix analysis. In this paper, a case history about a tall marine control tower is presented. The soil conditions at the site and the results of the computer analysis of the piled foundation are summarized. It is shown that the pile loads are indeed less than the allowable load for a single pile. Pile head loads and moments are used in the analysis of the raft foundation.

This paper presents some research results of pile foundation performance. Measurements on the bearing behaviour and driving effects of piles have been carried out during pile testing and pile driving. It has been found that the ratio of end resistance to the ultimate load depends on the pile length, and the ratio in general is less than 40% for single piles. However for pile group, the end resistance seems to be greater than skin friction. The characteristic curves of skin friction and end re­sistance appear as interaction between soils and pile. The contribution of skin friction to the pile bearing capacity not only depends on soil properties but also on the relative position of the soil layer. The pore pressure and the lateral pressure in ground have been observed during the stage of driving piles. Based on the available data, the radius of plastic region and the coefficient of pore pressure A can be found analytically. The pore pressure time process curves which may be used for practice have been predicted by means of numerical method.

The Bureau of Mines investigated palygorskite, a natural asbestiform material, to accumulate knowledge that might serve as a foundation for future synthesis of a similar material. Unit cell, chemical analysis, DTA, TGA, optical constants, and electron microscopy data were obtained. Selected palygorskite samples of bettor than 97-percent purity were used to obtain this information. Chemical analysis revealed the following formula: (OH2)4 (OH)2 Ca0.01Fe0.02K0 .c3Mg2.10A12.00Si7.93020.3.91 H2O. The optical constants for sodium light are a = 1.522; S = 1.530; ?=1.533; biaxially (-). The following orthorhomibic unit cell constants were determined: ao = 12.690 A, Z = 2, bo = 17.857 A, Dx = 2.327. co = 5.207 A, Identical diffraction patterns resulted from the three palygorskite samples that were studied. X-ray, chemical, DTA, TGA, and optical data were compared with literature values for similar fibrous materials. X-ray diffraction lines were indexed. Several electron micrographs were made to compare the structures of palygorskite and attapulgite with that of chrysotile. The micrographs revealed extremely short laths for attapulgite, very long flexible laths for palygorskite, and tubular structure for chrysotile.

In order to achieve high recovery of Cu and Co during cobalt-bearing copper sulphide ore smelting process, reducing agent (coke) and sulphidizing agent (pyrite) were added into molten smelter slag for reducing-sulphidizing smelting to product Cu-Co matte. Effects of reductive atmosphere, pyrite dosage, smelting temperature and smelting duration on Cu, Co, Fe distribution behaviours were investigated. The results show that the distributions of Cu and Co are mainly enriched in Cu-Co matte, and the distribution ratio, LCu and LCo, improve with increasing of coke amount or pyrite addition, whereas above 6 wt.% coke or 20 wt.% pyrite, Cu and Co tend to transfer from matte to cleaned slag. A properly high temperature(1300) and smelting duration(3h) are beneficial to the enhancement of the distribution ratio of valuable metals, and under the given set of conditions, LCu > LCo generally. However, an undesired high Fe contents in matte limit further increase of LCu and LCo.

The installation of truck turntables at above-ground crushers has the potential to yield gains in efficiency and productivity by eliminating the need for the trucks to turn around and reverse up to the crusher to dump their loads. The benefits include savings in time, fuel consumption and tyre wear. In addition, having a smaller area near the crushers dedicated to manoeuvring the trucks can be a significant benefit at some sites. Safety is also enhanced using turntables.This paper describes a project with the Australian Turntable Company to develop software that generates near-optimal layouts for the paths taken by the trucks in the vicinity of the crushers when turntables are present or absent. The geometry of the paths is constrained by the turning radius of the trucks and by the boundary of the manoeuvring area. The software quantifies the benefit of installing turntables by generating a design for paths with turntables and comparing it with the layout in current or planned use by the mining company. Managers are demanding efficient use of their resources and part of this demand is leading to the idea of integrated audits for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), quality and the environment. It is possible to construct audits which test the compliance in this area with standards established by management systems and it may be that such an integrated audit of a site could reduce the time of auditing and be equally effective as three separate audits. However, this is only a maybe. To do an audit on all three aspects when they are not fully integrated results in more time wastage than doing three separate audits. But organisations are not structured around the audit process (some financial managers may query this statement). The organisational management systems are put in place to achieve the organisational goals - presumably in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

"The high temperature reduction of solids through the use of reactive gas atmospheres has application in a wide range of industrially important processes. Whilst significant advances have been made in understanding and describing these processes, some key aspects of the chemical reactions and reaction mechanisms operating in these systems, for example, the transformation from metal oxide to metal, remain poorly understood. A number of different product morphologies have been identified in these reaction systems and the reaction rates have been shown to be critically dependent on the product structure.Theoretical examination of the elementary process steps taking place in the region of the gas/metal/metal oxide interface, combined with electron microscope studies of the resultant product microstructures, have enabled the key process and material variables responsible for the development of the various product morphologies to be identified. By considering i) established criteria for the stability of moving interfaces in a thermodynamic potential gradient, ii) the relative rates of chemical reactions on the oxide and metal surfaces, and iii) key process phenomena and physico-chemical properties of the solid phases, the mechanisms and conditions for the formation of various product morphologies are identified. Interestingly the analysis points to direct analogies between these phase transformations and, the phenomena and microstructures observed in metal solidification, and the potential to develop generic models of these fluid/solid reaction systems."

One of the major problems with deep Polish hard coal mines are deformations of close-to-wall galleries since they are necessary and must he kept open for emergency situations and are largely responsible for work disturbances. In order to ensure safe and effective working operations, it is necessary to often rebuild galleries which, apart from the inevitable stoppage of operations, is greatly disadvantageous for the operation of a mine. The largest problems with maintaining the galleries open occur in Lower Silesian Coal Field mines where sometimes it is necessary to reconstruct the galleries several times [(Fig. 1)]. In light of what has been said above, the aim of this article is to present the reader with methods and ways of determining deformations occurring in close-to-wall galleries. Squeezing or convergence of headings is only a portion of the entire process of ground movement caused by ground disturbance due to workings. The term "squeezing of headings" is to be understood as a shortening of the distance between a point set on the roof of a heading and the corresponding one on the floor. It is very important to know the rules governing the process of squeezing in a particular mining system since it affords possibilities to define changes of the process and its parameters at any moment for a given system. This is of utmost importance because convergence of a heading is one of the most significant manifestations of ground pressure which has already been proved by studies performed by Everling (1). On the basis of those studies it has been observed that there exists an almost linear relation between the rate of convergence and loading [(Fig. 2)]. This, in turn, means that the deformations of the already exploited portion of heading are proportional to the pressure changes.

The Nena high sulphidation deposit, located in the Sandaun Province, PNG, contains a measured and indicated resource of 51 Mt of copper ore grading 0.5% Cu and 0.6 g/t Au at a 0.5% Cu cut-off. The copper orebody is overlain by an 18Mt oxide gold resource grading 0.1 % Cu and 1.4 g/t Au at a 0.6 g/t Au cut-off. The deposit is hosted in advanced argillic altered pyroclastics interstratified with lavas, volcanoclastics, epiclastics and sediments of the Debom Volcanics within the Frieda River Intrusive Complex. Foraminiferal sediments indicate the Debom Volcanics to be Early-Middle Miocene in age. Alteration is elongated along, and concentric about a northwest trending structure (Nena Structural Corridor) which is about 7km in length. The inner two alteration types, residual and massive silica-alunite are strongly brecciated and host the bulk of later hypogene Cu-Au mineralisation. Weakly mineralised weak silica- alunite and barren peripherally zoned clay alteration surround the inner mineralised alterations. The hypogene sulphide deposition was polyphasal, episodic and is zoned from north to south from covellite-enargite ¦ chalcocite (5600N to 5200N) to a mixed enargite-luzonite (5200N to 4700N) to luzonite-stibioluzonite (4700N to 4400N) in the south within a 1200m long by 300m diameter sub horizontal pipe like body. Paragenesis studies indicate that pyrite ¦ marcasite were introduced early with barite and black native sulphur before deposition of banded pyrite (melnicovite) with barite during a period of brecciation. Continued brecciation allowed bladed covellite ¦ chalcocite followed by enargite-luzonite-stibioluzonite ¦ pyrite (brassy) and minor acicular covellite deposition. Yellow native sulphur and trace amounts of galena were deposited in remaining pores. Pre-acid alteration intrusives domed the mainly volcanic stratigraphy in the southwest and post-mineralisation porphyries in the northeast truncate mineralisation. Supergene processes and erosion have modified the top of the deposit, creating a 45m thick goethitic-scoroditic-haematitic gold cap above a 40m thick (on average) chalcocite rich supergene blanket. Lesser amounts of digenite, covellite native copper and rarely seen malachite occur in the supergene copper zone.

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations for the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest.

The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10 km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal orebody, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralization has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been subdivided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 potholefacies, FW3 pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralization. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralization located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the orebody.
