Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Australia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are beginning to experience where industry no longer 'calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a 'high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a 'distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas-of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to eliminate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "The molybdenite associated with copper porphyry ores is generally treated in a flotation circuit consisting of a separation and a cleaning section. In the last few years column flotation cells have replaced the numerous counter-current stages that were previously used in the cleaning section. Despite this, little has been published regarding the number of column cleaning stages required. Therefore a Moly flotation database is assembled with the objective of verifying the existence of a common upgrading profile. This can then be used as a guide in the prediction of the number of stages required to achieve a given concentrate grade.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the first use of Column Flotation was on copper flotation products, the popularity and understanding of their operation was not really achieved until they were widely implemented in Moly circuits in early 1983. The use of columns in Moly plants has since left a legacy of information, both published and unpublished. The data collected since that time has been used primarily used to establish column operating parameters and to determine upgrading potential within the circuit.Byproduct Moly generally occurs with porphyritic copper ores in concentrations less than 0.1% MoS2. As such, piloting a new moly ore to produce, say 5 Kg/Hr MoS2, in a slurry approximately 1 Lt/min (at 10% solids), requires a moly plant feed of about 570 Kg/Hr, which translates to a mill feed rate of 200 to 800 Tonnes per day (depending whether you deal with Chilean or Canadian ores). Piloting Moly for any lower tonnage would reduce the accuracy of the testwork.Thus a need exists to collect operating data in order to establish the existence of process relationships that could be used for feasibility and design purposes.The object of this paper is to expose a preliminary relationship that could be used for the purposes described above and to apply the findings to a preliminary design of a moly cleaning circuit flowsheet."

A series of in situ pull tests has been conducted to determine the holding capacity of the standard SS46 Split Set Stabilisers. The experiments have been conducted in a wide range of geological conditions ranging from bedded rock to blocky ground. The results presented in this paper indicate that cement grouted split sets bolts are likely to provide up to three times the initial bond strength per metre of embedment length provided by the ungrouted bolts. The increased load transfer capacity of the grouted bolts provides an alternative for permanent excavation support using split set stabilisers.

This paper presents the shielding effectiveness (SE) of woven continuous carbon/epoxy composite materials. The theoretical and physical concepts behind the experimental results are demonstrated in details. The influence of frequency, the overlapping angle between overlapped layers and the number of overlapped layers upon the EMI shielding of composite sheets are discussed. In this work, in particular, the epoxy layers are considered as dielectric apertures of the conducting carbon fiber slab for the interpretation of the experimental results. The experimental results, using ASTM standard D4935-89, indicate that the SE can reach values greater than 90 dB above 500 MHz.

Este trabalho apresenta a análise, o projeto e o desenvolvimento de um manipulador robótico industrial de baixo custo para linhas de produção. O aparato proposto possui potencial para contribuir na melhoria das condições de utilização de células robóticas no cenário industrial nacional, auxiliando na superação dos desafios existentes na implantação de células robóticas por pequenas e médias empresas, nomeadamente, custos de implantação, manutenção e reprogramação/reconfiguração. O manipulador robótico industrial foi projetado considerando uma estrutura metálica leve de baixo custo, com elementos mecânicos de precisão média e não dedicados, facilmente encontrados no mercado nacional. Além disso, o manipulador robótico foi projetado para ser capaz de alcançar velocidades médias provendo tempos de ciclo de operação quase equivalentes aos apresentados por robôs polares articulados convencionais, nas mesmas aplicações. O sistema de controle foi concebido para não empregar o dispendioso sistema convencional de hardware centralizado de controle de eixos, sendo esta operação realizada por algoritmo computacional executado no mesmo PC responsável pela gestão e integração dos processos. Assim, a operação emprega dispositivos acionadores descentralizados considerando o envio dos sinais de referência diretamente aos acionadores, possibilitando a compensação das restrições dos esforços da estrutura com recursos de suavização de trajetórias. A integração com o usuário foi projetada para possuir uma interface gráfica de manipulação amigável e que permita facilmente os processos de operação, manutenção e de reconfiguração. Fornecendo ainda, recursos de supervisão, histórico de falhas e assistência remota. Por fim, um protótipo do manipulador robótico industrial proposto é apresentado demonstrando as principais características construtivas e operacionais.

The effect of pressure on the extension of the ? loop in the FeSi system has been determined by means of metallogvaphic studies and hardness measurements performed on a series of high-purity Fe-Si alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 at. pct Si, respectively. These mensurements, performed at 42 kbar and temperatures up to 1200oC, indicate that the ? loop is expanded to about 10 at. pct Si at 42 kbar as opposed to a maximum extension of 4 at. pct Si at 1 atm. Comparison of the experimental results with thermodynamic predictions of the pressure shifts yields satisfnctory results. DURING the past few years, several studies have been performed in our laboratory1-' in order to determine the effect of high pressure on phase equilibrium in pure iron and iron-base alloys. The purpose of these studies has been to elucidate the effects of high pressure experimentally and to compare the observed results with predicted pressure effects derived on the basis of known thermody-namic and volumetric data at 1 atm. These studies have included work on pure iron2,5,7 as well as Fe-Ni,1,5 Fe-cr,l,5 and Fe-c4-6 alloys. In addition, Tanner and Kulin3 have reported results of pressure studies on two Fe-Si alloys containing 2.0 and 6.25 at. pct Si. At the time of this latter study, no detailed information was available concerning the difference in volume between the a (bcc) and ? (fcc) phases in the Fe-Si system as a function of silicon content. In order to compare their observations with calculated pressure shifts, Tanner and Kulin were forced to assume that silicon had no effect on the difference in volume between a and ? iron. The resulting discrepancy between their calculation of the a/? phase boundary at 42 kbar and the observed results led them to the conclusion that silicon additions probably decrease the difference in volume between a and ? iron. Recently: Cockett and Davis8,9 have reported de- tailed studies of the lattice parameters of a series of Fe-Si alloys at temperatures ranging from 20" to 1150°C. These measurements, performed on alloys in the bcc and fcc range, show that silicon does indeed decrease the difference in volume between a and ? iron. By correcting the calculations of Tanner and Kulin in line with the observed effect of silicon they were able to show improved agreement between computed and observed pressure shifts.' The present measurements were undertaken to provide additional corroboration of this effect, by extending the range of composition, in addition to exploring a situation where large extensions of a ? loop could result in impingement of the ? field with an ordered bcc phase (based on Feo.75Sio.25). I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS The alloys investigated were obtained from Dr. F. Kayser of M.I.T. They were prepared at the Ford Scientific Laboratory by vacuum melting electrolytic iron and high-purity silicon. The melts were poured under an argon atmosphere into hot-topped steel molds. Subsequently the ingots were hot-worked down to 1/2-in.-diam rods. Three alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 pct Si were studied. Carbon, regarded as the principal impurity, analyzed at, or below, 0.001 wt pct for all of the alloys. Prior to pressure-temperature treatment, the rod was annealed for 24 hr in vacuum at 1000°C, water-quenched, and subsequently machined into 0.100-in.-diam by 0.100-in.-long specimens. Subsequent to machining, the specimens were again annealed and then examined metallographically. They were found to exhibit a clear coarse-grained ferrite similar to Figs. 10 and 110 of Ref. 1 and Fig. 2 of Ref. 3. Subsequently, specimens of each alloy were equilibrated at 42 kbar at various temperatures in supported piston apparatus.1,3,4,6 Three specimens, one of each alloy, were wrapped in platinum and exposed simultaneously. The pressure-temperature cycle consisted of increasing the pressure from ambient to 42 kbar at 25oC, heating rapidly to the desired temperature, holding for 15 min, and quenching to 100°C, followed by slower cooling to 25°C and pressure release. Conventional roof bolting may be giving ground to a new technique that utilizes only the ground itself to stabilize mine openings. This newly developed stress control technique (SCT) has initially been used in sedimentary ore bodies that are both overlain and underlain by weak strata. The technique is also suited to the design of production panels and main entry systems, and is readily adaptable to room and pillar as well as total- extraction mining, including both shortwall and longwall coal mining. In applications where the technique has been used, the requirements for roof bolting and floor renewal were virtually eliminated. The SCT comprises three basic methods and covers a wide range of problems associated with failing roofs and heaving floors in underground mines (see Table 1).

"A flexible model involving perfect mixers, stagnant zones, plug flow, material bypassing and recycling zones has been developed for interpreting mixing phenomena in mineral processes. The mixing properties are described by the residence time distributions which can be subsequently interpreted by the flexible model. User-friendly computer programs (for 1MB-PC or compatible) have been developed for simulation and modelling of RTDs using the proposed model. Seven mineral processing case studies are discussed in terms of experimental procedure, model calibration results and application of the estimated mixing model to process modelling, diagnosis, and performance evaluation. IntroductionIn any mineral processing plant there are continuous-flow machines that transform or separate the ore components. Grinding mills, flotation cells, conditioning and leaching tanks are examples of such machines. The performances of these vessels or reactors are controlled by the rate at which the reaction proceeds and the time spent in the environment where the reaction occurs. This paper deals with the latter aspect of mineral processes operation.Since most of the reactions occurring in mineral processing units are time dependent, knowledge of the residence time of the material in process vessels is important for modelling and diagnosis purposes. Due to the random mixing phenomena involved in the process equipment, there is a distribution of the residence time of the ore particles and the fluid in the vessel. The probability density function E(t) that a micro-element of the material flowing through a processing unit stays a time t in the vessel, is the residence time distribution (RTD) of the corresponding component."

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) INTRODUCTION CRUDE oil attracted attention because of its excellence as a fuel for open-hearth furnaces; for making crucible steel and brass; for melting copper, lead, tin, zinc, nickel, silver, malleable iron, gray iron; and for the production of steam in all sizes and types of boilers. For heating furnaces, mold-drying ovens, core ovens, ore roasters, calciners, hot-air furnaces, sand drying, asphalt road work, etc., its superiority over other fuels is due to the fact that the heat is at all times under perfect control, so that a constant temperature may be attained and maintained at the will of the operator. This means a maximum amount and uniform quality of work. Crude oil is of two kinds, paraffine base and asphaltum base, and varies from 11 to 46 gravity Baumé. The light-gravity oil does not require heating before use; but oil of less than 20 gravity Baumé should be heated to just below its vaporizing point, in order to reduce its viscosity and to obtain the highest efficiency of combustion. Heavy California oil vaporizes at 230°'F., Mexican crude oil at from 175° to 210° F., and Beaumont, Texas, oil at 142° F. Fuel oil vaporizes at 130° F.

With the rapid development of renewable energy technology, such as electricity reserves, to store energy for electric or electric vehicles, environmentally friendly energy sources are expected to continue to be fulfilled according to mobility and stationary energy needs. Lithium is the most attractive candidate for energy storage development. The presence of lithium in Indonesia in the Sidoarjo mud content is interesting to be used as an alternative source of raw materials. During the research, sulfuric acid acted as a solvent, and hydrogen peroxide acted as an oxidation agent. Lithium recovery will be studied using a leaching process at various temperatures (30, 45, and 60 °C) and sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 mol/L). The increasing temperature, sulfuric acid concentration, and hydrogen peroxide concentration will directly affect the lithium recovery. An increase in sulfuric acid concentration will be directly proportional to the recovery of lithium in the solution. Optimum conditions were obtained at varying 6 mol/L sulfuric acid concentrations and 60 °C temperature variations. The shrinking core model (SCM) studied leaching kinetics, and ash layer diffusion acted as a rate-controlling process. The activation energy of the leaching process was obtained at 38.90 kJ/mol.

Touched off by spectacular and well-publicized diamond-drilling results on the property of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd., mining companies and the general public are competing for mining claims and for the shares of companies owning mining claims in the area, with little regard for values. Such a stock-market boom has various unfortunate consequences but undoubtedly one beneficial result is that considerable amounts of money are made available for serious development. The Yellowknife mining area lies on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, in the Northwest Territories, at a latitude of approximately 62°30' north. THESE days of great industrial and social problems in America produce many suggested solutions and great changes. The practical engineer and employer of labor views these problems differently from the labor leader or the social reformer, but as never before he is sincerely interested in solving them in a way that will be just to all. The inevitable tendency of the day is toward "industrial betterment," "safety," "industrial education," "efficiency," and the many other things' which have become so familiar to progressive employers. There is no longer any question that these things are worth while from both the hu¬man and economic standpoints. They "pay" in dollars and cents. The very center of final success in improving conditions and increasing the efficiency of workingmen must be the spirit of fairness and a knowledge on the part of the employer of how to deal sympathetically and intelligently with his employees. Every progressive employer knows how greatly he desires foremen, superintendents, managers and others who possess these qualities. On the other hand, we are all familiar with serious mistakes made by young graduates of engineering schools who have had no opportunity to develop these qualities, and who have no real appreciation of the worth of the workers. Indeed, one wonders whether much ill-feeling, labor difficulties, and many strikes could not be avoided if such men had the right attitude. Is there any way of remedying this condition? If this particular difficulty can be solved, if these young engineers, many of whom are our coming leaders of industry, can be given the right perspective and the right understanding of these other problems in addition to fair, sympathetic methods of handling men, many of our other problems will be solved-not at once, but gradually and permanently, as these men make good and become influential in paths of industrial righteousness and industrial peace. Many progressive employers of to-day have enlarged their own perspective and realize the great importance of enlarging the perspective of those who shall follow them.

WeissThe reasons for failure of computer applications in the mineral industry and the direction of future developments.The Chairman opened the discussion by elaborating on the disappointment felt by some authorities with the lack of progress in the application of computers in the mineral industry during the last ten years, and posed the question to the panel : 'Do you agree that the computer age has not come up to expectations?'Mr Langton said that although there seemed to be a tremendous amount of brainpower applied to the theoretical side, he thought that the production men had not got all the help from computers that could have been given to them. The computer, said Prof Griffiths, is as yet a new tool which should not be used to do old things in old ways. To learn to use the computer will take time. After all, he said, it had taken 400 years after the introduction of the printing press to achieve general literacy, and perhaps it will take 40 years after the introduction of the computer to achieve `numeracy'.In Mr Weiss' view, the reason for the feeling of disappoint¬ment lay in the focussing of attention on the computer. The blame, if any, lay with the people surrounding the computer, that is, the analysts and programmers, to whom the emphasis should be shifted.Prof Hawkins said that he thought that some applications of the computer in the mineral industry had been successful, such as, for example, the compilation of payrolls. Reasons for failures in other areas were to be sought in the fact that the people connected with computers had failed to realise that they were merely part of a system. They had not understood the power structure of the organization which their work tended to change, and were therefore not prepared for the inevitable conflict with the production men.In Mr Splaine's view the production man had not received the assistance he could have had from the computer people because he may possibly not have allowed this to happen.Prof Bleksley concluded from these opinions that the promise which computers had ton years ago had not been fulfilled and added that the opinions expressed by the panel had intruded on his next question which was: 'Is the reason for this that people are involved?Prof Hawkins elaborated on his previous theme, namely, that of computer people in relation to management. Com-puter people, he said, were trying to impose change on management but were not prepared to share the responsibility for these changes. In fact, they wanted their work to be distinct and separate, and, as far as management was concerned, changes would be made when management believed that these would be less agonizing than no change at all."

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several stages—basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States for 2006 was 3.2 percent. The nominal GDP was about $13.2 trillion. The value of minerals mined in the United States in 2006 rose significantly because of increased unit price for some metals—particularly copper, zinc and other base metals. There was also a significant reduction in metals stocks. Infrastructure expansion and manufacturing in China and India have been absorbing a significant portion of world output. THE technological interest attaching to light, age-hardening alloys for structural uses has been pointed out to one of us.1 A potentially interesting alloy would be titanium-rich Ti-Mg alloy, provided that sufficient solid solubility exists. or could be induced at high pressure. and provided also that age hardening can be induced by proper temperature and/or pressure annealing. It was decided therefore to explore the feasibility of producing a Ti-Mg alloy in the high-pressure apparatus. Experimental. Three high-pressure runs have been carried out. Heavy minerals recovered from recently discovered deposits in the Murray Basin are proving to be somewhat more difficult to process into saleable ilmenite products than ilmenites from existing operations. This is due to the nature of the gangue minerals present, the impurities in the valuable minerals and the size distribution of the mineral assemblages. Ilmenite product quality, in particular, can be adversely affected by any of these factors. Over the past two years the authors have been involved in assessing the potential to manufacture ilmenite products from a variety of mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin. The steps undertaken to define the potential products and develop suitable flowsheets have evolved in parallel to the exploration efforts, in cooperation with companies undertaking exploration in the Murray Basin. A combination of an understanding of detailed mineralogy, application of magnetic fractionation and modification of magnetic susceptibility of the ilmenites has in all cases, been successful in improving ilmenite product quality. The targeting of particular ilmenites to specific downstream processes for TiO2 pigment manufacture is the most challenging aspect of this development.

The formation of the gas emission zone in longwall mining and the potential amount of gas in this zone are factors of local geology and spatial variability within this geology. Therefore, geostatistical methods can be used for modeling and prediction of gas amounts and for assessing its uncertainty in the gas emission zone of longwall mines. This study used core data obtained from 64 exploration boreholes drilled from the surface to the bottom of the Pittsburgh coal seam in a mining district in the Northern Appalachian basin. After identifying important coal layers for the gas emission zone, semivariogram modeling was conducted for different coal seams to define the distribution and continuity of various attributes. Sequential simulations were performed for stochastic assessment of these attributes to calculate gas-in-place (GIP) in each coal seam. GIP calculations for coals of various gas emissions zones were combined and ranked for their cumulative distribution function to find GIP in the caved zone and in the fractured zone at the 5%, 50%, and 95% quantiles. Fifty percent quantile results were later used to isolate a panel from the whole area and create a mosaic representation corresponding to the daily advance rate of the longwall face. This approach helped to estimate the daily emissions of this panel from the caved zone and from the fractured zone. Results showed that gas-in-place in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the caved zone, and in the fractured zone showed spatial correlations that could be modeled and estimated using geostatistical methods. This study showed that gas-in- place volumes in the study area may be as high as 12.3 Bscf and as much as 3.5 MMscf per acre of mining.
