MINERAL EXPLORATION 'The Function of Exploration Mineral exploration aims at locating the presence of economic deposits and establishing their nature, shape, and grade. As all ore bodies are finite, exploration is essentially the lifeblood of the mining industry. It is divided into two phases, reconnaissance and target investigation. It involves geological mapping, geophysical prospecting (aerial and ground or both), geochemical surveys, prospect drilling, and/or exploratory under-ground workings. Successful exploration is followed by development drilling, mine development, and eventually operation. In underground mining, the term "ore" is applied rather loosely to metalliferous rock that can be profit- ably mined, but nonmetallic industrial minerals and energy related materials constitute a large and growing portion of the tonnage extracted by underground methods each year. It is appropriate, therefore, to consider exploration as the search for any useful substance occurring in the earth or in the oceans that is of sufficient value as to volume, grade, chemical and physical com- position, and location as to make extraction by mining commercially profitable for the investment required. The Selection Process The search for ore includes hundreds of mineral commodities. The more successful exploration organizations tend to restrict the search to the mineral commodities for which they have strong exploration expertise and which have a high probability of being concentrated in areas open to exploration and development in sufficient volume, grade, and proximity to the surface to warrant the large expenditures of risk capital in finding an ore body. Special expertise is needed to engage in mineral exploration and development for the extended periods required for success. Individual prospectors continue to discover mineral occurrences, but it generally takes an organization with strong financial resources to carry the exploration process forward to the point of developing "ore." Still greater corporate resources in the form of management, engineering, and sales capability are needed to develop an ore body into an operating mine. In the past, companies other than those engaged in mining rarely conducted exploration, since they lacked the technical skills and know-how to bring a mine to fruition. A notable trend in recent years has been the success of other resource-oriented firms, such as petroleum companies, that have not only acquired the necessary skills to engage in exploration for hard minerals, but are doing so on a far more intensive scale than known in the industry heretofore. The desire to diversify from increasingly regulated oil and gas, the potential for the discovery of a bonanza, and the large scale of mining projects for these capital-intensive firms are the attractions. US government and certain international organizations, such as the United Nations, have fielded sizable exploration programs in the past decade on behalf of Third World countries wherein many of the world's higher grade deposits and scarce mineral resources are located. The level of overall mineral exploration in the industry is, regrettably, closely geared to the business cycle. Accelerated search during the periods of strong demand, shortages, and high prices, together with the long lead times necessary to develop mineral finds, often creates surges in supply which invariably are followed by a collapse in prices. The trend is, therefore, to exploration funding by larger better-endowed firms having the staying power to weather the cyclical nature of mining. Tax incentives, tariff policies, and other incentives have a decided impact on the level and nature of exploration. Surface mining regulations and environmental forces have fostered a renewed interest in under- ground development despite the lower average costs of surface mining. Spiraling inflation has caused mining costs to outpace prices for many mineral substances. Organizations increasingly are directing their search away from high- grade but limited tonnage occurrences toward low-grade disseminated bulk tonnages amenable to mining on a vast scale. Mining continues, therefore, to grow even more capital-intensive with half-billion-dollar mine-mill- smelter complexes now commonplace, compared with the hundred-million-dollar projects of a decade ago. Reconnaissance Exploration Having elected to search for specific mineral commodities, the exploration company narrows its focus to a reconnaissance of those regions offering the best potential. A working hypothesis which is constantly up- dated concerning the geologic controls for ore occurrence guides the search. The possibilities for discovery are best in areas of existing mines and known ore bodies, where the probabilities are high for additional ore occurrences. In such areas, published data on the trends and geologic controls of known mineral occurrences aid the search. Even in some remote territories, a variety of geologic data is available to the explorationist. The major sources of basic geologic data are the libraries of the US Geological Survey (USGS), the state geological surveys, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the US Bureau of Mines, and various institutions such as Colorado School of Mines. Overseas, virtually all of the countries have their own geologic survey groups which are associated directly, or indirectly, with their respective ministries of mines. The objective of reconnaissance exploration is to narrow the search by pinpointing target areas having interesting mineralization. These favorable areas are then investigated in detail to delineate potential ore bodies.

The environmental compliance process affects all aspects of hardrock-mining operations, from exploration through post-closure. The primary components of the environmental compliance process are requirements under the National Environmental Protection Act of 1969 (NEPA) and the permitting requirements associated with various other federal, state and local laws. This study considers the Greens Creek Mine and the development of two other projects (Alaska-Juneau & Kensington). These mines were used as the foundation for a case study of the impacts of the environmental compliance process on hardrock-mining activity in Southeast Alaska. The case study presents the institutional and legal requirements, followed by a discussion of the impact of this process on the production and timing of the three mines. The results of this preliminary study reveal some interesting findings, some expected and others unexpected, regarding the impact of the permitting process on the exploration, development and (proposed) operation of the three mining projects in the Juneau area. Determining the cost of compliance with these requirements is an important step in evaluating the appropriate course of action to protecting the environment while providing the necessary raw materials needed for society. This preliminary study highlights the initial starting point for such an analysis.

The types of compounds present in aromatic concentrates derived from high-boiling petroleum distillates can be estimated from a gel permeation chromato-graphic (GPC) analysis by the use of tables developed from extensive GPC and mass-spectral analyses on fractions from four crude oils. For a fraction from the GPC analysis, the retention volume and the molecular weights (from mass spectrometer) suffice to indicate the types of compounds which predominate. The tables which show these qualitative analyses were developed through the use of pure compounds as well as the extensive analyses on Prudhoe Bay (Alaska), Gach Saran (Iran), Swan Hills (Canada), and Wilmington (California) crude oils. These tables provide a rapid method for determining which types of compounds are present in a GPC fraction before attempting to develop quantitative data.

A vast majority of longwall operations in the US use shield-type hydraulic supports to provide ground control along the longwall face. The three-dimensional, finite-element technique combined with a progressive failure approach was utilized to simulate interaction between shields and surrounding strata and determine various loading conditions. In addition, a separate finite-element model of the shield structure was made to study responses of each longwall shield to the different loading conditions. Shield responses under various loading conditions and the shield characteristics, such as shield stiffness, the ability of resisting horizontal forces, and the effect of shield height, were studied based on the results from finite-element analyses. The results can provide the basis of effective shield design and be used for evaluation of the shield performance. It is suggested that a technique incorporating the finite-element method be developed to evaluate real-time shield performance for the purpose of effective ground control.

For a number of years Russia, India and Brazil have outranked all other countries as producers of manganese ores. During the 5 years immediately preceding the European war, the average annual production of Russia was 844,000, of India 694,000 and of Brazil 200,000 long tons. Since the outbreak of the war there has been a considerable falling off in the Russian and Indian production, particularly in the former, whereas the production of Brazilian ores has been greatly increased, amounting in 1914 to over 250,000 tons and in 1915 to nearly 350,000, with conditions favorable for a still larger production in 1916. Manganese is one of the few industrially important metals that are not produced in the United States in quantity commensurate with our needs, so that we have been compelled to import annually about 300,000 tons, having a value of over $2,000,000, and these ores have been obtained from the three countries mentioned above. Their rank as contributors to our imports of manganese ores was India, Russia, Brazil; and in 1913, Brazil contributed only one-fifth. During the past 2 years Brazil has furnished rapidly increasing quantities to this country, and, with the falling off of imports from India and Russia, has become our principal foreign source. In 1914, Brazil furnished two-fifths of the imports and more than India or Russia, and in 1915 over nine-tenths. The manganese ores of Brazil are consequently of more than usual interest to us at this time. This study proposes a new blasting vibration estimation formula that reflects the vibration reduction characteristics of electronic detonators, which are not considered in the current MOLIT blasting vibration estimation formula. Test blasts were conducted across six types of Korean open-pit blasting designs. The results of the test blasts showed that the K value for electronic detonators decreased by approximately 30% compared to electric detonators. Predicted Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) analysis indicated a reduction effect ranging from 30% to 31% across various types. By incorporating this reduction in the K value into the MOLIT blasting vibration estimation formula (K=200), a new electronic detonator blasting vibration estimation formula (K=140) was proposed. Using this new formula, the blasting damage range (R) was calculated under various vibration limits to evaluate constructability improvement. On average, the R value for electronic detonators decreased by about 17%, with significant reductions of around 41% observed for TYPE I under certain vibration limits. In conclusion, the adoption of electronic detonators in open-pit blasting operations improves blasting efficiency, reduces economic costs, and significantly enhances constructability. Electronic detonators have demonstrated superior performance in minimizing damage to safety facilities compared to traditional electric detonators, thereby proving their practicality and effectiveness in blasting operations.

Many blasting companies are using simulated production ground vibration waveforms to aid them in the control of their vibration effects. The simulations are typically produced by using a seismograph to record a signature waveform from a single hole shot and subsequently applying the various delays to be used in a proposed production design. The ability of this simulation method to give good results usually depends on three primary factors. These are: 1) the homogeneity of the seismic travel path from hole to hole; 2) the consistency of the seismic energy release per unit of explosive from hole to hole; and 3) whether or not the delays fire as planned.

In zone-melting, a small molten zone or zones traverse a long charge of alloy or impure metal. Consequences of this manner of freezing are examined with impurerespect to solute distribution in the ingot, with particular reference to purification and to prevention of segregation. Results are expressed in terms of the number, size, and direction of travel of the zones, the initial intermsofsolute distribution, and the distribution coefficient. IF a charge of binary solid-solution alloy is melted and then frozen slowly from one end, as for example in the Bridgman method of making single crystals,' coring usually occurs, with a resulting end-to-end variation in concentration. Such coring, or normal segregation, is undesirable where uniformity is an object. On the other hand, for certain systems, it can be utilized to refine a material by concentrating impurities at one end of the ingot.'. ' In the present paper a different manner of freezing will be examined with respect to the distribution of solute in the ingot. A number of procedures will be indicated which have in common the traversal of a relatively long charge of solid alloy by a small molten zone. Such methods will be denoted by the general term zone-,melting, while the process described in the preceding paragraph will be called normal freezing. It will be shown that, in contrast to normal freezing, zone-melting affords wide latitude in possible distributions of solute. Segregation can either be almost entirely eliminated or it can be enhanced so as to provide a high degree of sttparation of solute and solvent. A number of simplifying assumptions will be invoked which, while not entirely realizable in practice, nevertheless provide a suitable point of departure for more refined treatments. Moreover, our own experience with zone-melting has shown that, for certain systems at least, the analysis holds quite well. The present paper will be confined to a discussion of principles and a general description of procedures. Comparison with experiment is planned for later publication. Normal Freezing Before considering zone-melting, segregation during normal freezing will be reviewed briefly. If a cylinder of molten binary alloy is made to freeze from one end as in Fig. 1, there usually will be a segregating action which will concentrate the solute in one or the other end of the ingot. If the constitutional diagram for the system is like that of Fig. 2, then the distribution coefficient k, defined as the ratio of the concentration in the solid to that in the liquid at equilibrium, will be less than one and the solute will be concentrated in the last regions to freeze. If the solute raises the freezing point, then k will be greater than one and the solute will be concentrated in the first regions to freeze. The concentration in the solid as a function of g, the fraction which has solidified, can be expressed by the relation: C = kC0 (1-g)k-1 [I] where C, is the initial solute concentration in the melt. Eq 1 is based on the following assumptions: 1—Diffusion in the solid is negligible. 2—Diffusion in the liquid is complete (i.e., concentration in the liquid is uniform). 3—k is constant. Concentration curves representing eq 1 for k's from 0.01 to 5.0 are plotted in Fig. 3. This equation, in one form or another, has been treated by Gulliver,³ Scheuer,4 Hayes and Chipman5 for alloys and by McFee2 for NaCl crystals. It is derived in Appendix I. It should be pointed out that the k which is calculated from the phase diagram will be valid only in the ideal case for which the stated assumptions are correct. In all actual cases, the effective k will be larger than this value for solutes which lower the melting point, smaller for solutes which raise the melting point, and will probably vary during the beginning of the freezing process. For simplification it will be assumed that the ideal k is valid. Zone-Leveling Processes The processes of this part are designed to produce a uniform, or level, distribution of solute in the ingot. Single Pass: Consider a rod or charge of alloy whose cross-section is constant and whose composition, C2, is constant, although permissibly varying on a microscopic scale." Although natural gas was first discovered in Northwest Arkansas in 1887, . near Fort Smith, Sebastian County, the literature contains very little information on the region, which is separated distinctly from the oil area of Southern Arkansas. For that reason this brief and concise report is a summary of developments from discovery to the present time. Northwest Arkansas produced 5,736,-ooo,ooo cu. ft. of natural gas during 1942, the trend of production having been generally upward over the past five years, as is shown in Fig. I. Since 1904 a reserve of 237 billion cubic feet of natural gas has been discovered in Northwest Arkansas, of which approximately 162 billion cubic feet have been expended, leaving a reserve of approximately 75 billion cubic feet available as of Jan. 1, 1943. A prolific new field discovered in Pope County Oct. 23, 1942, will add to the reserve of the region materially. Per well reserves, over-all, are unusually high because of the practice of multiple completion. As yet no commercial deposits of oil have been discovered in Northwest Arkansas. but the gas deposits have proved of immense value industrially, principally in the processing of zinc ore mined in the local area as well as that imported from distant states. With the war, new interest in the exploitation of the metallic ores of the region lends new significance to the gas reserves tabulated herein. Geological Discussion The region covered in this report comprises the Arkansas Valley from Pope County weslward to the Arkansas-Oklahoma state line as shown in Fig. 2. This valley is a westward trending structural trough with sharp-topped ridges and mesa-like mountains rising above the valley's undulating surface. It is bounded on the north by the Ozark Highlands and on the south by the Ouachita Mountains. The sedimentary beds of the Arkansas Valley are composed mainly of noniossil-iferous shales and sandstones. The rocks contain a high content of carbonaceous material and many coal beds are found in the region. The Gxed carbon ratios (ratio of fixed carbon to volatile combustible matter of surface coals) are very high and average about 80 per cent over the region covered in this report. Little or no calcareous material is present. Rocks of the Arkansas Valley are sharply folded, and igneous intrusive rocks cut the sedimentary beds at a few places. The Arkansas Geological Survey' made a detailed reconnaissance survey of the Arkansas Valley province in 1927, the purpose being to delineate the major structural features (Fig. 3) and to point out the possibilities of discovering addi. tional gas deposits. A lead smelter slag with high copper, lead, arsenic and silver contents was treated at laboratory scale for arsenic removal. The slag was first leached at atmospberic pressure with sulfuric acid and oxygen. According to arsenic contents leaching of most of the arsenic was achieved in either one or two stages, producing a lead-silver rich residue and a solution high in copper and arsenic concentrations. Alternative routes were considered to treat the resulting solution. Firstly, solvent extraction of arsenic with a mixture of TBP and 2-etbyl-bexanol was tested and extractions of over 95 percent of arsenic were achieved. Secondly, a copper arsenate precipitation treatment was done to eliminate arsenic and copper from solution.

"Quang Ninh province is located in the north east of Vietnam and the coal mining in the province generates two thirds of the province’s GDP. The coal is extracted from both open pit and underground mines for the country’s complete coal export and by a share of more than 90% for domestic coal usage. Overburden generated through open pit mines is piled up nearby in the form of large waste rock dumps. The side-hill fill dumping near open pit mines is the source of environmental degradation in the region. Among the current problems at solid waste rock dump sites are dust emissions during and after dumping as well as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). One of the major existing problems at waste rock dumps is dump stability (comprising erosion, sliding and subsidence issues). The RAME R&D project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam) is - among other activities - actively involved in the research for stabilisation and rehabilitation of mine waste rock dumps in Vietnam in the form of several sub-projects. The Institute of Mining Engineering I of RWTH Aachen University is leading the sub-project of mine waste dump stabilisation in co-operation with Chair of Geotechnical Engineering and Brenk Systemplanung GmbH. Mine waste dumping in the form of layers as an alternative to the side-hill fill dumping is expected to bring up environmental and economical benefits by minimising the problems of dump sites with the contribution to a sustainable development. Reduction of the post construction settlements, long term stable dump profile with minimum erosion, improvement of material parameters for geotechnical slope stability through compaction from hauling trucks as well as economical evaluation of new dumping concepts are the areas of the current research. The project has been financed by German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). The ultimate aim of the sub-project is the compilation of the project results in the form of a "Best Practice Guide" and software based "Decision Support System" for planning and management of solid mine waste dumps."

Many of the wastes produced by modern steel plants are pulps or sludges containing significant concentrations of iron and displaying some ferromagnetic characteristics. These waste materials are often suited to treatment by magnetic cycloning to produce a high solids content underflow and a clean water overflow. Alternatively in the classification mode, the magnetic cyclone can produce a high iron underflow product for recycling by discarding fine non-magnetic material to the overflow. Results for the treatment of a variety of steel plant wastes in 5.0cm, 2.5cm and 1.25cm diameter cyclones, operating with and without an applied magnetic field, are presented. It is demonstrated that the magnetic cyclone increases solids recovery to the underflow product, especially at finer particle sizes and for higher solids content feed pulps.

Gadolinium, dysprosium, and yttrium are difficult to electrowin as high-purity liquid metals because of their high melting points (>1,300° C). Samarium metal is difficult to prepare directly by electrolysis because the metal reacts with the electrolyte. In this Bureau of Mines study, the rare-earth metal was electrodeposited on a solid manganese, chromium, or iron cathode to form a low-melting alloy. The alloy was then vacuum distilled to separate the rare-earth metal from the ferrous metal. A typical samarium metal product, obtained as the distillate from vacuum distillation of a samarium-iron alloy, contained 150 ppm oxygen, 80 ppm carbon, and 50 ppm iron as impurities, Gadolinium metal, obtained as a residue from the distillation of a gadolinium-chromium alloy, contained 300 ppm oxygen, 200 ppm carbon, and 100 ppm chromium.

Pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite from deposits distributed within the Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces of North Carolina and adjacent areas were examined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for cobalt, nickel, manganese, lead, tin, chromium, molybdenum, and gold. The ore samples were also examined petrographically. Cobalt and nickel, in general, enter pyrite and pyrrhotite rather than chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Manganese generally enters sphalerite rather than the other phases where an alternative is possible. The presence of tin in sulfide minerals was noted in a group of deposits east of the known occurrences of tin oxide (cassiterite) in the Kings Mountain belt, which may indicate the presence of a more extensive tin belt in the southeastern Piedmont than was previously recognized. Pyrrhotite from a group of four deposits in Jackson and Clay Counties, North Carolina, differs from pyrrhotite from other Ducktown-type deposits in having cobalt/ nickel ratios less than one, finer grain sizes, and colloform texture. These differences suggest that that this group of deposits has had a history different from that of the other Ducktown-type deposits studied. No significant conclusions could be made based on the distribution of lead, chromium, molybdenum, or gold.

"The microstructural and mechanical properties of iron powders processed in an attrition mill are highly dependent upon the processing environment. Extended high-energy ball milling in argon resulted in nanocrystalline bcc-Fe microstructure, while processing in nitrogen or alloying with carbon resulted in both nanocrystalline bcc-Fe and bct-Fe microstructures. In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, both X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer analysis were used to show that the infused carbon and nitrogen concentrations were predominantly on the grain boundaries. Explosive consolidation resulted in a fully dense product with microstructure similar to the microstructure of the mechanically processed powder. Hardness values of the compacts correlated highly with grain size, independent of the processing conditions.IntroductionNanocrystalline materials have been theorized and shown to have unique properties that make them interesting for material scientists and promising for material engineering applications. Several conferences have been devoted solely to the techniques of preparing nanostructured materials have been held(l,2,3.). To date, most techniques used to generate nanocrystalline materials produce only a few grams of particles(1). High-energy ball-milling, however, is an efficient and effective technique that can produce substantial quantities of nanocrystalline materials with homogenous chemical composition that cannot be produced by conventional processing techniques(3).Applications and material evaluations of nanocrystalline materials require several grams of solid samples. Because nanocrystalline microstructures' are thermodynamically unstable, producing consolidated macro structures of nanocrystalline material has proved to be very difficult(2,3). In particular, retention of the nanocrystalline microstructure during consolidation of nanocrystalline particles has proven to be a problem. In contrast to many consolidation techniques that require elevated temperatures, explosive compaction uses a shock wave for consolidation( 4,5)."

"The French Mine (formerly the Oregon) is 4 miles by road south of the Nickel Plate Mine. It lies on the steep eastern slope of the Similkameen River valley at elevation 4,000 feet, between Cahill and Winters Creeks.The property was discovered in .1901 and bought 4 years later by Messrs. French and Deardorf. It was developed in a modest way by the owners and by several companies until 1947, without success. The spectacular showings of bornite and chalcopyrite in the outcrop drew attention to its possibilities for copper rather than gold. Diamond drilling by the owners in 1947 yielded several high-grade gold intersections and created new interest. In 1949 the property was purchased by Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited. Exploration drilling and geological mapping outlined sufficient ore to commence production in 1950. Except for a few months each winter the operation has been continuous, and to the end of 1954 had produced almost 30,000 tons of high grade ore. The ore is crushed at the mine and hauled 8 miles by truck to the Company mill at Hedley, where it is treated together with the ore from Nickel Plate.Regional GeologyThe country rock consists of brown tuff, flows, limestone, and cherty formations belonging to the Nicola group (Rice 1947) of Triassic age. West of and just below the mine is a large mass of granodiorite which is part of the same body that underlies Nickel Plate Mountain. Bedding attitudes in the mine area are locally complicated, but dips are generally less than 45 degrees. To the south and below the mine the beds stand almost vertical, continuing downward with this attitude for 2,000 feet to Winters Creek. The main granodiorite contact is also steep, conforming to the sedimentary formations, whereas northward towards Nickel Plate it dips gently to the northwest, slightly flattter than the thick westerly dipping pile of sediments above it. The interpretation of this structure by Billingsley (1936) is that the French mine lies near the crest of the large northeasterly trending asymmetrical anticline which contains in its gently dipping western limb the Nickel Plate orebodies. The granodiorite body conforming roughly to this shape seems to occupy the core of the anticline. Sill-like prongs of granodiorite extend upward to the east from the main mass, outcropping over wide areas at the head of Winters Creek (Figure 1). There is a possibility that overthrusting from the west, similar to that on Nickel Plate Mountain, occurs not far below the French mine.An interesting feature of the granodiorite-sediment contact is that where it dips gently westward no alteration exists in the sediments, but where it has a steep front pronounced heat effects are indicated by the presence of a thousand-foot-wide zone of reddish garnet skarn."

Silverton was the queen city of the western mining towns in the early 1900s. Located high in the San Juan Mountains, the town constantly grew and changed. Yet, it was subject to the vagaries and whims of economics, politics and disasters, natural or otherwise. Breweries, smelters and sawmills serviced Silverton's swelling mining population, which reached several thousand at its peak. Two trains a day ran from Durango to Silverton, in addition to trains running from Silverton over the top of Red Mountain on to Ironton. They ran up Cement Creek to the little town of Gladstone and up the Animas River Valley to Howardsville, Eureka and Animas Forks. During these prosperous times, construction flourished. There were plenty of wooden structures, and many of these stand today. The first brick buildings were built by bricklayer Patrick Stanley in 1877. It took quite a while for the first car to arrive. Almost 28 years passed from the coming of the first train to the arrival of the first car. It was brought over 3,840-m (12,600-ft) Stony Pass from Creede, CO, in an incredible journey retold years later by Louis Wyman. "Dad's daydreams were not the idle musings or the fantasies of a mystic," Wyman said. "They had a way of erupting into reality. He advocated and built good roads," he said. "During the summer of 1910, he was up to his sweatband in a project that took in half the state of Colorado. He envisioned an automobile highway, unheard of at that time, running southwest from Denver through the scenic grandeur of the high Colorado Rockies. The road would traverse a thousand miles or more of the state's finest recreational land finally circling back to Denver. Years later, when all of the county roads had been connected, it became known as 'Colorado's Thousand-Mile Circle Route.' Of course, Silverton and the San Juans were bright stars along the way."

"Delft University of Technology, RWTH Aachen, Helsinki University of Technology and Imperial College established the Federation of European Mineral Programs (FEMP) in 1999 as a legal body to coordinate joint M.Sc. education.By 2003 the number of participating universities in Europe has grown to 9 (in 7 countries) offering 3 different M.Sc. joint programs. Furthermore students from 8 universities in the USA, Canada, Australia and Chile participate through exchange agreements. About 25 companies are associated with FEMP. Further expansion with other clusters of universities is being investigated.So far some 160 students have taken the programs and are working in all parts of the world in a variety of jobs.The European Commission has recently announced the new “Erasmus World” program that will stimulate the offering of joint programs by European universities and offer third-country students and teachers a greater opportunity for mobility and an enhanced European added value. Host European postgraduate courses will be selected for a five-year period. They will receive funding from the Community and a “EU” seal. Around 250 “EU Masters Courses” will be established.The envisaged new Erasmus program and it’s network and operating practices are very similar to those being used by EMC, EMEC and EGEC. Erasmus World therefore offers a great opportunity for further developments with FEMP as the official body.INTRODUCTIONThe current situation in Europe is that globalisation of the supply of mineral resources has caused the larger mining and the manufacturing companies to expand and invest particularly outside Europe. However these industries still have a great significance for the European Union and its members, which means that mineral engineering know-how is still important in the E.U. It was therefore realised in the mid-nineties that is vital to maintain the very high level of knowledge and skill base in mining engineering and mineral technology that currently exists in the E.U., through good and well-balanced education programs."
