U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently initiated the Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project. This is a multidisciplinary study along the Rocky Mountain Front Range from Pueblo, Colorado, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is designed to collect, compile, and analyze new and existing data on natural aggregate (stone, sand, and gravel), as well as water, and energy resources. To identify aggregate resources in the Front Range, a 1:500,000-scale reconnaissance map showing locations and quality of both bedrock and surficial sources of natural aggregate in the Front Range urban corridor was prepared by processing the digital geologic maps of Colorado and Wyoming. The first step of the process was to identify map units as either bedrock or unconsolidated material. Bedrock was classified according to type (i.e., limestone, granite, gneiss, etc.), which in turn was classified based on the suitability of the bedrock for use as crushed stone. Unconsolidated materials were classified according to relative age, with the older, more weathered materials being defined as less suitable for use as aggregate than younger materials. As a spin-off from the Front Range Project, the techniques developed for analyzing the Front Range geology have been modified and expanded to include all of Colorado and New Mexico. More detailed digital aggregate maps (1:24,000 scale) are being prepared in collaboration with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS). Maps from the CGS "Atlas of Sand, Gravel and Quarry Aggregate Resources, Colorado Front Range Counties" show the distribution of potential resources of sand and gravel and provide general information about the physical properties of the resources. These maps are being digitized and merged into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) data base. In addition, the project is adding more specific information to the maps about deposit thickness, volume, and quality. This additional information is being obtained through field-characterization studies and modeling activities. The GIs data base can be displayed and queried using off-the-shelf software such as ArcInfo?, ArcView?, and Map Professional?. In addition, the USGS is developing a decision-support system to assist users in analyzing various land-use options on resource availability.

This paper discusses pore pressures in the embankments of tailings dams by comparing real world data with common design assumptions. Assessment of pore pressures has implications on material behaviour interpretation from CPT investigations and, therefore, on the design. For example, the assumption of hydrostatic pressure is conservative for limit equilibrium stability analyses but may be un-conservative in assessing the potential for contractive behaviour and strength loss during shearing. This paper presents some real world data, the investigation methods to determine the pore pressures, and subsequent interpretation of CPT data and material parameters such as the state parameter. It also examines the design implications of assuming a hydrostatic pressure distribution, by comparing results from that assumption with those obtained using the real pore pressures.CITATION:Johns, D and Murray, L, 2018. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior of oil securities during the six-year period January 1932 through December 1937. This period was selected because of its varied character. It includes the depths of the depression, the broad and spasmodic recovery, and the recession collapse. The first part of the analysis is devoted to the correlation of a number of economic factors with an index of 13 oil stocks. The second part is a comparison of the different,ial behavior of 6 oil stocks. The relationships developed here are only a few of many that might be considered in a complete analysis. The stock market is regarded as a barometer of business confidence and as such exerts an important influence upon corporate policies, particularly upon industrial expansion. The complex and continuously changing nature of its price structure, the ebb and flow of influences and the effects of impacts require dynamic rather than static analysis. When treated in this way, many of the important fluctuations in market prices and changes in the relationships between securities appear quite logical. The market for oil securities has varied widely in recent years. The Standard Statistics index of 13 oil stocks made a bull market peak of 166.7 in September 1929. The collapse of the boom and the ensuing bear market finally carried the index down to a low of 36.4 in June 1932. From this point oil stocks made an irregular recovery; they reached a top at 139.7 in March 1937, and after maintaining this approximate level through August, declined precipitously to 93.3 in December 1937. The prices of these 13 oil stocks have gone up and down under the influence of numberless variables. These variables are of two kinds, those external to the industry, and those that are solely due to its internal condition. The external factors are political, social, and economic, both domestic and foreign. These are the influences that induce the ebb and flow of all prices in general and security prices in particular. Among the internal factors are the regulation of industry, the development of new reserves and processes, and the disequilibrium due to lack of balance between supply and demand. Some of the simpler relationships are examined in this paper.

The attapulgite industry saw a year of solid growth after a weaker 2003. Demand was up between 5 percent and 6 percent driven by almost all of the key markets. Construction continued to show record new housing demand, assisted by continued low interest rates. That drove strong growth in construction related markets like coatings, tape joint compounds and other construction materials applications. The agricultural markets rebounded modestly to increase sales for suspension fertilizers, animal feeds and pesticide carriers. Oil drilling also showed strong growth due to high oil and gas prices. Sales to molecular sieve applications grew due to petrochemical and construction demand. The export markets were assisted by further depreciation of the dollar. The only weak area was in nonagricultural granular sorbents, where other sorbent materials continued to dominate.

Magmatic-hydrothermal deposits rich in magnetite and/or hematite form a broad group that includes monometallic Fe deposits and polymetallic (mainly Cu and Au) deposits. They show a considerable variation in deposit characteristics, but share the genetic processes of magmatic differentiation and related hydrothermal activity in intermediate to felsic melts, and in some cases involve brines and/or meteoric waters during mineralization. They include several world-class deposits. They range in age from Proterozoic to Recent, and form important metallogenic districts in Scandinavian, Canadian, Brazilian and Australian Shields, Circum-Pacific regions, and in China, Iran and Turkey. Monometallic deposits have been important sources of iron in the past and still contain significant resources of the metal, e.g., the Kiirunavaara deposit in Sweden. The giant Olympic Dam Cu-Au-Ag-U-REE deposit was discovered in 1975, and since then explorationists have focussed on search for analogues worldwide. This has brought to light a number of economically important new deposits and prospects, including examples in Canada. The discoveries have in turn prompted considerable research on individual deposits and the group as a whole. This short paper is an attempt to summarize the main aspects of the group from the literature cited in Gandhi and Bell (1996), and from the papers published recently in two milestone volumes on these deposits, edited by Porter (2000 and 2002).

MULTIPHASE diffusion has been studied for many years in two-component systems1,2 and many of the experimental aspects are now fairly well understood.314 Although by no means all of the problems connected with the two-component case have been solved,' attention has recently been directed to the more complex situation involving three components. The pioneer work of Clark and Rhines6 yielded a qualitative picture of the types of behavior that can occur, and Clark7 has suggested conventions for describing the various phenomena. Kirkaldy and co-workers8,9 have made quantitative studies in several ternary systems and have offered explanations of the occurrence of isolated and nonisolated precipitates. At present, however, there is no comprehensive theory for the variety of phenomena observed in ternary, multiphase diffusion. By analogy with several studies that have been made of multiphase diffusion in the binary Cu-Zn system,2'10'11 a similar exploratory study was made of Cu-Zn-Ni alloys lying along the line in the ternary diagram from the point 80 Cu-20 Ni to the zinc corner of the diagram, Fig. 1. A principal question to be answered was whether initially plane interfaces would remain plane during the course of one-dimensional diffusion. The diffusion specimens studied are described in Table I. The five separate alloys from which they were made were melted in evacuated Vycor capsules from 99.9 pct purity copper, zinc, and nickel. Since some of the alloys were too brittle to be swaged, all of the alloys were used in the cast condition. To facilitate later homogenization, the molten alloys were solidified by plunging the capsule in water. Homogenization heat treatment was done at 720°C for 20 hr. The five nominal compositions in weight percent zinc and nickel, respectively, were: 37.5, 12.5; 44.0, 11.2; 50.0, 10.0; 55.0, 9.0; 65.0, 7.0. Ln Table I the alloys are identified only by their zinc content. Sandwich-type diffusion specimens were prepared by pressure welding disk specimens, each about 3 mm high by 10 mm in diameter. Welding was done in a special threaded vise which was heated at 500°C for about an hour in an atmosphere of flowing hydrogen. A measurement of the separation of the phase interfaces was made on a polished flat on the welded specimen, and then the specimen was sealed in an evacuated capsule and given the diffusion treatment shown in Table I. INTRODUCTION Coal is forecast to be an increasingly important and economical source of energy for the future as the supply of oil and gas declines relative to overall energy demand and perhaps in absolute quantities produced. With the decline in productivity, especially in underground mining, in the early seventies coinciding with the need to produce greater quantities of coal for market, a gradual change from room-and-pillar mining to longwall mining has been taking place in the United States. Consolidation Coal Company (Consul) produces about 50 million tons of coal per year with approximately 66% being from underground mines. Most of the mines are located in the Appalachian Region in the States of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, and in Ohio and Illinois. Coal is produced by the room-and-pillar mining method with continuous mining machines in addition to an increasing number of longwall mining faces. Continuous mining machines will continue to be used for driving longwall development entries as well as in areas where partial extraction must be practiced in order to support the overburden rock because of surface structures or in areas that cannot be subsided, or where unfavorable geologic conditions limit the application of the longwall mining methods. ROOM-AND-PILLAR MINING METHOD Some background in the room-and-pillar mining method may be helpful to provide perspective. This method has been widely practiced since the beginning of coal mining in the region. It is a flexible system because it can provide either partial or nearly complete extraction, and coal pillars can be left where needed to support surface structures or oil or gas wells or because of unfavorable geologic conditions (Choi, Dahl and McCain, 1980).

"Blasting in high sulphide content ores presents at least two major safety considerations: (1) compatibility of the explosives with the ore while resident in the borehole; and (2) introduction of a flame and shock producing explosive into this environment, while minimizing the risk of reactive ignition in the chemical reaction products/sulphide dust cloud resulting from the detonation. This paper will discuss only the second consideration, i.e. post detonation reactivity.The ETI (Explosives Technologies International) Technical organization, in consultation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, reasoned that the most relevant considerations in the development of an explosive for this application are:• minimization of reactive gaseous detonation reaction products;• flame duration reduction;• flame temperature reduction;• increased explosive sensitivity;• reduced probability of ""low order"" detonation; and• maintenance of energy level as high as possible.Obviously, not all of these are totally independent properties, i.e. increased sensitivity will reduce the probability oj low order detonation as will higher energy levels. However, these considerations were examined separately as if they were independent."

The potential for roof falls in underground mines remains a clear and present danger for mine workers. An investigation of ground conditions in nearly 50% of the nation’s underground stone mines found that the state of roof stability is primarily determined in a limited and subjective manner. These large opening mines, with roof heights typically of 7 m or more, make physical observation difficult. Although some mines use monitoring techniques to gain additional information on roof stability, this practice is usually short-term and localized to address ground conditions in a particular section or part of the mine. A methodology to assess the risk for a roof fall is proposed in a preliminary fashion based on engineering judgment acquired from extensive underground stone mine experience and examination of related literature. The proposed method utilizes an observational technique to identify the risk of roof falls in three categories. Case study scenarios provide a realistic picture of model implementation. Providing the mine level decision maker with an accurate assessment tool to ascertain the level of risk related to ground conditions is expected to reduce mine worker injuries and fatalities. Moreover, the presences of danger can be overcome with a clear picture of quantified ground conditions.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating a method to recover Ni, Cu, and Co from low-grade domestic laterites through reduction roasting, leaching, sol-vent extraction, and electrowinning unit operations. The objective of this research is to develop processing technology that can convert low-grade domestic deposits containing critical metals into national reserves. As a part of this research, a solvent extraction system was investigated for the extraction of nickel and copper, followed by the separation and production of suitable electrolytes. Nickel and copper were coextracted from ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquors (pH~9.5) with LIX 64N extractant in a laboratory-size mixer-settler continuous circuit. Three extraction stages resulted in >99-pct extraction of nickel, substantial copper extraction, and essentially no cobalt extraction from leach liquors. A crowd stage reduced the ammonia loading on the solvent by maximizing nickel loading. Residual ammonia was removed from the loaded solvent with a pH-controlled scrub. Nickel and copper loaded on the solvent were separated by selective stripping. Typical nickel strip circuit operation using electrolyte containing 90 grams per liter (g/l) Ni and 11.9 g/l H2S04 yielded >99.9 pct Ni stripped from the solvent in five stages. The copper loading on the recycled solvent was controlled in a copper strip stage using electrolyte containing 25 g/l Cu and 160 g/l H2S04,

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. This paper discusses the application of a video technique to construct stability diagrams for the combustion synthesis of ceramic-metal composites. Several model exothermic combustion synthesis reactions have been used to investigate the effect of the reaction parameters, eg. stoichiometry, green density, etc, on the stability of the propagating combustion reaction front and subsequent product morphology. The effect of varying the reactants and their stoichiometry to provide a range of reactant and product species ie. solids, liquids and gases, in the synthesis of both dense and expanded (foamed) ceramic and ceramic-metal composites was also investigated with respect to their corresponding combustion front stabilities.

The gold concentration profiles which develop inside the activated carbon particles during the adsorption process were measured, so as to obtain additional direct proof of intra-particle mass transfer rate-control and to determine how individual carbon particles in a population vary in their gold uptake behaviour. The observed gold concentration profiles inside the activated carbon particles were typical of situations where an intra-particle mass transfer mechanism is rate-controlling. Gold di-cyanide penetrated the carbon particles with a wave-like front until it was uniformly distributed throughout the particle. This corresponds with the profiles predicted by the film and surface diffusion model. However, the rate with which gold di-cyanide was transported inside the individual carbon particles varied within the population of carbon particles. This variation was characterized by a lognormal distribution in surface diffusivity. Because the estimated variances of these surface diffusivity distributions were small, the dynamic adsorption behaviour of the carbons used in the present study did not deviate significantly from that predicted by a model based on film mass transfer and a single surface diffusivity. Van Deventer (1984, 1985 and 1986a) reported data that could not be adequately described by a model based on film mass transfer and a single surface diffusivity. In this study a model based on film mass transfer and a wide lognormal distribution of surface diffusivity values was applied to his data. It was shown that a population of carbon particles with a wide distribution in surface diffusivity values could offer an alternative explanation to the mechanism proposed by Van Deventer which was based on film mass transfer, with partitioning of the carbon into micro- and macropores with surface diffusion in the macropores and slow mass transfer into the micropores.

The coal-bearing strata of Oklahoma occur in the eastern part of the state over an area of 14,500 square miles, 20.7 percent of the state's total area. Commercially valuable deposits of bituminous coal cover about 8,000 square miles in seams ranging from ten inches to five feet thick. Estimated reserves in Oklahoma are 1.6 billion tons, representing 0.3 percent of U.S. coal reserves. The vast majority of coal mined in Oklahoma used in a single power plant within the state. Oklahoma gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 19, 1981. Authority for the state to administer the Abandoned Mine Land program was granted January21,1982. On April 30,1984, the Office of Surface Mining substituted direct federal enforcement of the inspection and enforcement portions of the Oklahoma program. This substituted enforcement was based upon a finding by OSM that Oklahoma had not operated the inspection and enforcement portions of its program effectively. As of January 1, 1986, Oklahoma inspection and enforcement authority was reinstated. Full program authority was granted to Oklahoma on January 14, 1986.
