As the nickel sulfide ore deposits become decreasingly viable as a source of nickel metal, increasing attention is being paid to the exploitation of the nickeliferous laterite ores. Attempts to produce a high grade ferronickel concentrate from these ores by pyrometallurgical methods face several challenges, in particular the selective recovery of the highly disseminated nickel from the reduced ore. The current work explores strategies for maximizing the size of ferronickel particles formed in order to improve the selective recovery of the ferronickel by magnetic separation. The effect of various coal, elemental sulphur, pyrite and sodium sulphate additions on ferronickel particle formation and size at 1000°C have been investigated. It has been observed that increased coal additions leads to a moderate improvement in the size of the ferronickel particles, while the presence of any sulphur bearing reagent leads to a significant increase in particle size. The retention of sulphur in the reduced material has also been studied, showing sodium sulphate has the highest retention, followed by pyrite and then elemental sulphur. An inverse trend was observed in the efficiency of sulphur retention on the basis of residual mass of sulphur per unit mass of reagent added.

A GPSS/H simulation is beeing done for a traditional smelter of copper, which envolves a reberberatory furnace, a set of Peirce Smith converters (PSC) and a refining furnace. The objective is to try different plant layouts, being the handling of liquid material at high temperature one the mainly concern, this envolves a study of the ladles and cranes used. Some of the modifications that can be evaluated through the model is the role of oxygen potential when tonnage oxygen is used, number of cranes, PSCs in operation, etc.

Each year, Florida mines approximately 40 million tons of phosphorite, most of which is ultimately converted to various commercial fertilizers. The phosphorite is mined from within the bottom portion of the 40-to 60-ft. thick surficial aquifer, using open pit mining techniques. The ore zone or "matrix" is generally overlain by relatively permeable fine sand to silty and slightly clayey fine sand. The ore itself is highly variable in nature but, in Central Florida, typically consists of less permeable clayey phosphatic sands and sandy clays with stringers of permeable sand. The ore is much more sandy in the north Florida mining area.

"Heap leaching, currently being applied in the treatment of low-grade ores in the south western United States, is shown to have potential for use in north western Ontario. The history and operation of the process are described, and cost comparisons are given.IntroductionHeap leaching is a simple, low-cost method of recovering gold from low-grade ore. Although it is not currently being used in Canada on a production scale, it is being used extensively, and successfully, in the southwestern United States as well as elsewhere in the world. Especially suited for large deposits of very low -grade ore, it also appears to be practical for use on small, high-grade deposits because it avoids the high capital costs of mills. Eveleth (1980) and others suggest that the capital and operating costs required for heap leaching are approximately 20% and 40% respectively of conventional milling methods.Northwestern Ontario is noted for its large number of undeveloped, small, high-grade gold deposits. Although there are a number o f larger and higher-grade deposits in the area as well, it is the relatively small undeveloped deposits which would benefit most from heap leaching, if it could be demonstrated to be a viable extraction method.To assess the significance of these small deposits, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources recently commissioned a consultants' study of the gold reserves in certain parts of northwestern Ontario. This report, titled ""Feasibility of Small-Scale Gold Mining in Northwestern Ontario"", by J.N. Neilson and R.C.E. Bray (1981, OGS Open File Report 5332), documents 106 known gold deposits having sufficient information to calculate gold reserves. A total of over 7.8 million tons having a weighted average grade of 0.19 oz of gold per ton were compiled in the proven, probable and possible categories, with an additional 8.2 million tons in the speculative category. Many of these deposits could be mined by open-pit methods."

INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid combustible mineral substance resulting from the alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. It occurs in nature with varying percentages of mineral matter associated with and incorporated into the coalified material. If the amount of this inorganic mineral matter is sufficiently small, and if selective mining can be practiced so as to avoid the incorporation of ash- bearing material from adjacent strata and/or parting seams, the coal can be used as-mined. Otherwise, it must be given a preparation treatment. In 1980 the bulk of the approximately 525 coal preparation plants were located in the eastern half of the U.S., largely in the Appalachian and to a lesser extent in the midwest coal fields (1). Only 17 of these preparation plants were located in the west; these were in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. In the past, however, a great many more preparation plants were operated in these and other western states. The upsurge in both the domestic and world- wide demand for quality coking and steam coal will certainly lead to an increase in the number of preparation plants in the west. In fact, there has been a massive development of coal mines and their associated preparation plants across our northern border in Alberta and British Columbia, largely to serve the export coking and steam coal market. Most of the tremendous increase in newly-mined coal in the western U.S. has come from thick seams of inherently low-sulfur, low- ash coal, easy to mine selectively without significant contamination with ash-forming minerals and requiring no preparation. The subject of quartz occurrences in respirable coal mine dusts has been of increasing concern in recent years. The primary impetus for this concern has been provided by better measurement technology that has detected an increased number of mines with high quartz content in their respirable dusts. This paper presents the results of statistical analyses of quartz levels in multi-stage impactor samples from eighteen different coal mining sections located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Colorado and Utah. The quartz and kaolinite determinations were then determined by combining impactor stage loadings to provide larger dust masses and applying the infrared spectrometry procedure outlined in Bureau of Mines/MSHA Method P7. The results will be presented using two categories of data collected during two separate phases of the research: (1) quartz concentration data from mines where quartz was known to be present in relatively high concentrations, and (2) quartz concentration data from mines chosen at random. The aspects of the occurrence of quartz in coal mine airborne dusts that will be reported include the size dependence of the quartz content, quartz variations with location in the mining section, and variations due to mining region. The results of the study show a strong pattern of size dependence of the quartz content in mines for which high quartz concentrations exist. A similar, though less pronounced, pattern exists in mines chosen at random. Quartz levels appear to have a varying relationship to section location and strong geographical patterns do not appear to exist in the data collected. Kaolinite content was found to be similar to that of quartz with patterns that are somewhat more consistent.

Debate on an appropriate, acceptable method of regulating mine and mineral processing wastes has been ongoing since Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) on October 21. 1976. Final regulatory determination on which mineral processing wastes are excluded from the RCRA hazardous waste regulations under the Bevill amendment was made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on June 13, 1991. Regardless of whether a mining or mineral processing facility?s waste stream(s) lost or maintained its exclusion status under the Bevill amendment, that facility can expect more stringent regulation of affected waste streams. These more stringent regulations will be added to an already complex regulatory maze, which includes the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), as well as state and municipal environmental regulations.

The rapid increase in reliability, the low cost of operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made. Methane can be a significant hazard in coal mine longwalling operations and extensive methane mitigation techniques are employed by coal mine operators. Reservoir modeling techniques are used to better understand the liberation and migration of methane from the surrounding rocks towards the mine ventilation system. The caved rock behind the advancing longwall face, known as the gob, can contain high void ratios, providing high permeability flow paths to the methane. The gob is progressively compacted by the weight of the overburden, resulting in a reduction in the void ratio and associated permeability. Estimating the permeability distribution within the gob poses challenges due to its complexity. The authors have developed a new methodology to determine both horizontal and vertical variations in the permeability of the gob. Variations of the permeability in the vertical direction are based on a model of caving and block rotation, which considers the effect of block dimensions and fall height on the void ratio. Gob compaction by the overburden and associated permeability changes are determined from a three-dimensional geo-mechanical model which simulates the gob as a strain hardening granular material. The resulting three-dimensional permeability distribution in the gob is then transferred to a reservoir model. The paper demonstrates the application of the method and shows that reasonable results are obtained when compared to empirical experience and measurements.

This report contains Bureau of Mines analyses of 291 samples of crude petroleum from the Gulf Coast Area of Louisiana and Texas. Included are 65 analyses from 51 Louisiana fields and 226 analyses from 216 Texas fields. Analyses from the Texas fields include 90 from 58 Upper Gulf Coast fields, 47 from 28 Middle Gulf Coast fields, and 89 from 40 Lower Gulf Coast fields. The analyses represent fields that produced 1,000 barrels or more per day during at least one of the years 19.57 through 1961, with the exception of 23 analyses from the Texas fields. The fields considered are listed by state and geographical groupings, with field names arranged alphabetically within each grouping. The tabulation also includes information concerning the geological sources of the samples. General characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses are summarized. Crude oil production data are given for the fields for 1960 and 1961 and are cumulative through 1961.

Nothing in Turkey is simple. Its his¬tory is long and convoluted, its culture fascinating, its metallogeny diverse, and its geology very complex. This article will focus on the geology of western Anatolia and the precious metals poten¬tial of this third of Turkey. Any gold produced by mines in Tur¬key since the early 1900s has been a by-product of the mining for other met¬als, such as copper from the massive sulfide deposits of the Pontics. Archaeological records, however, prove that gold was mined from the Pactolus (present day Gediz) River and refined by Croesus at Sardis in about 550 BC. Other records and legends make it possible that gold was mined before 1200 BC for the Homeric City of Troy (Priams treasure?) about 25 km (15 miles) east of Canakkale at Mad¬endag and Kartaldag. A final legend of antiquity suggesting gold in what is now Turkey relates to King Midas. And, indeed, the city-state belonging to a king of that name has been recognized near the city of Eskise¬hir. More recently, precious metals have been mined at Madendag-Kartaldag in the late 1800s. Arapdag, near Izmir, remains the only "authenticated" epith¬ermal precious metal deposit in Turkey (Mosier et al., 1985). With this spotty record, why the sud¬den interest shown by at least five Euro¬pean-based, three or four US-based, and several other international mining firms and their Turkish subsidiaries? Like other aspects of Turkey, the complete answer is not simple but, reduced to its basics, has three parts. Turkey, relative to many developing nations, has a stable, democratic form of government (although it also has a for¬midable bureaucracy) whose currency exchange rate is premised on the US dollar. New laws promulgated since 1983 have opened the country and welcomed foreign investment. Some have even provided investment incentives. The Mining Law of August 1985 made sweeping reforms of the old land tenure system. This law made it possible for a foreign-based company to have a wholly-owned Turkish subsidiary en¬gaged in mining. Equally important is the belated recognition that western Anatolia, while geologically compli¬cated, is today basically a province Neogene extensional tectonics having many of the geologic attributes of the leading gold producing province of the US - the Basin and the Range. Geologic rationale for precious metals exploration Tectonic/lithologic framework: Alle¬gorically and simplistically, Anatolia during early Neogene (middle Miocene) can be likened to a tube of toothpaste with the cap off. It is squeezed in the vise formed by the Arabian plate mi¬grating north toward the southwest end of a stable Asian platform. The "tube" was compressed. It could not expand to the east because it was sealed by what is now southern Russia and Iran. The filling of the tube escaped to the west, in the direction in which the cap was miss¬ing (Fig. 1). So developed during the middle to late Miocene the western-most struc¬tural province of Anatolia. This was done by a process aptly termed tectonic "escape" by Sengor et al (1985). This province is dominated by exten¬sional tectonics much like the Basin and Range of the western US and has an estimated extension of between 30% and 50%. The most striking manifesta¬tion of this extension is the 10 to 11 major east-west trending grabens (Ge¬diz, Buyuk Mendares, Kocuk Mendares, etc.) and intervening horsts, although a much greater number of smaller, gener¬ally northeast-striking grabens and half

"Zinc is the fourth most widely used metal in the world after iron, aluminum and copper. The primary zinc production is through flotation of zinc concentrate, roasting, leaching and electrowinning. Close to 60% of the metal produced is consumed in galvanizing the steel by making a thin layer of zinc coating on the steel surface by hot dip galvanizing. Process Research ORTECH Inc. has developed an efficient energy-saving sustainable technology for the recovery of zinc from secondary sources such as galvanized steel scrap, dross, dusts etc. The process consists of treating the zinc containing scrap in an alkaline solution to remove the zinc and thereby producing a zinc free steel scrap for recycle. The zinc containing leach liquor is subjected to a solvent extraction process to recover value added zinc oxide as the final product. In this paper, important industrial processes for the recycling of zinc including the PRO process will be discussed. BACKGROUNDZinc is the fourth most widely used metal in the world after iron, aluminum and copper. Global refined zinc output increased by 2.7 per cent to 13.16 million tonnes in 2011 and is expected to increase by an additional 2.4 per cent to 13.48 million tonnes in 2012 [1]. The primary zinc production is through flotation of zinc concentrate, roasting, leaching and electrowinning. Close to 60% of the metal produced is consumed in galvanizing steel by making a thin layer of zinc coating on the steel surface by hot dip galvanizing. Other major usages of zinc are in the production of brass and bronze, die casting and zinc-air batteries. The additional demand for zinc could come from its addition to fertilizers to increase crop yield.While the demand for zinc is increasing, many mines are scheduled to close in near future after being depleted of ore. The mines set to close between now and 2015 are Teck Resources’ Red Dog Mine in Alaska, Minmetals’ Century Mine in Australia and Vedanta Resource’s Skorpion Mine in Namibia [1]. The depletion of resources due to continued use and exploitation is becoming a great concern for the zinc industry. As a result, the sustainability of natural resources for continued societal care has become extremely important. Resource conservation and recovery by recycling with minimal environmental impact is a key element for sustainable development. In this paper, important industrial processes for the recycling of zinc including the PRO process are presented."

Surface mining operations use large off-road haul trucks extensively to move material at mining properties. Past research, using the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) emissions factors for unpaved haul roads, has shown that haul trucks generate the majority of dust emissions from surface mining sites, accounting for approximately 78%-97% of total dust emissions. Observations of dust emissions from haul trucks show that if the dust emissions are uncontrolled, they can be a safety hazard by impairing the operator’s visibility. This increases the probability for haul truck accidents (See photos above). However, the greatest long-term health hazard of dust generated from hauling operations is due to inhalation of the respirable dust [median diameter <4 micrometers (µm)] and tho­racic dust, which is equivalent to the EPA’s definition of PM10 [particulate matter with a median diameter <10 µm]. Exposure to respirable dust has long been considered a health hazard at surface mining operations, especially if silica dust is present. There are two legislative acts that regulate the air quality for mining operations: the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the Clean Air Act of 1970. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 established the limits for dust in the work place for health and safety pur­poses. The Clean Air Act of 1970 regulates air emissions from facilities from an envi­ronmental perspective.

It was noted that this equation was similar in form to that proposed originally2 by McVetty. This type of equation was also suggested by Andrade and Aboav3 in studies of the shear strain of cadmium. Calculation of the constants ?o, ?t, ?, and ?s, in Eq. [ l] is somewhat involved due to the slight complexity of this relationship. In the paper by Garofalo a computer approach based on a least-squares analysis was recommended. Such an approach involves a trial and error solution but when a computer facility is available the difficulties in this calculation are of little consequence. It does mean however that the evaluation of this type of equation would become quite tedious if computer facilities were not available. Some recent studies have identified a fairly straightforward method for calculating the constants in the Garofalo equation. A major problem during shovel excavation in oil sand mining is the variability of material diggability resulting in varying mechanical energy input, cycle time, energy consumption, wear, and stress loading of shovel dipper-andtooth assembly. This variability greatly influences the mining equipment performance. Different approaches such as empirical ground classification systems, analytical methods, and performance monitoring that are used to determine diggability of groundmass are reviewed. It is concluded that the existing empirical diggability classification systems are site specific and mostly based on rock and therefore, cannot be used for shovel excavation in oil sands. The O&K wedge test is a simple and useful index test for establishing correlations between cutting resistance and geotechnical properties of coal and other soft rock overburden material. But this test, when performed on small size unconfined oil sand samples, may not give reliable indication of diggability because of the boundary conditions on the specimens. Digging predictions made using analytical and laboratory digging models need to be verified with performance monitoring data to better understand the digging effort in oil sands.

Este tipo de venillas son más comunes en los pórfidos Cu – Mo, mientras que en los pórfidos con afinidad hacia el Au (Cu – Au / Au – Cu) suelen ser más escasas o no estar presentes, pero aun así su débil presencia puede servir como una herramienta de vectorización.

The limestone resources of Hawaii are derived chiefly from emerged fringing coral reef and coastal dune deposits of Pleistocene age. These deposits are most abundant on the island of Oahu and other older islands and least abundant on the island of Hawaii, the youngest. Their origin and depositional environment were influenced by glacio-eustatic rising and falling of sea levels during Pleistocene time. Dredged reef limestone deposits from two deep-water harbor projects have provided additional resources. Limestone uses include cement and lime manufacturing, concrete sand and aggregate, mad base material, beach sand replenishment, agricultural lime and golf course construction.

William Clinton Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.

LOCATION AND HISTORY The Lakeshore Copper property is located on the Papago Indian Reservation approximately 30 miles South of Casa Grande, Arizona. This major porphyry type deposit was discovered by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1966. Following an extensive diamond drilling program, El Paso invited several mining companies, including Hecla, to examine the property with a view towards participation. Hecla&apos;s examination, and the attendant feasibility studies, led to agreements, which were finalized in September 1969, whereby Hecla would acquire a 50% interest in the property, and would act as operator. The Lakeshore deposit covers an area approximately 3,000 feet in width by 6,000 feet in length. It consists of an upper zone of disseminated copper oxides, averaging approximately 100&apos; in thickness overlying a zone of disseminated copper sulfides up to 1,000 feet thick. Near the base of the disseminated ore is a blanket like zone of high grade copper sulfides, referred to as the tactite ore body. The mine is being developed to produce approximately 6,500 tons per day of oxide ore and 9,000 tons per day of sulfide ore. This represents a total daily production rate of 15,500 tons per day, which will be achieved by underground mining methods using rubbertired dieselpowered mining equipment. DEVELOPMENT LAYOUT The mine is being developed by two parallel 15° decline tunnels. The declines were collared 5,000 feet southeast of the ore body, and are being driven in a northwestery direction, to pass beneath the tactite ore zone.
