Mill crushing drive systems are essential to cement producers. With the increased emphasis on operating efficiency, it is vital that these systems be dependable and reliable. No one needs the costs or headaches associated with unscheduled downtime or inefficient machinery operation. A reliable drive system starts with the proper selection of the ring, or girth, gear and continues through proper maintenance. Ideally, selecting the right girth gear brings together the gear manufacturer, the system designer and the end user. The gear manufacturer must know the details of the application, the demands that will be placed on the gear and the nature of the equipment to be driven. Similarly, the user and the system designer must be familiar with the variables that affect gear drive performance and service. For example, an application that places a torque load on the drive in excess of its rated capacity will result in gear tooth distress and, in severe cases, breakage.

Este trabalho apresenta os resultados parciais de uma tese de doutorado desenvolvida no PPGE3M da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), com as Empresas Produtoras de Resíduos perigosos (EPRs) do setor metal mecânico da região de São Leopoldo/RS e suas Empresas Prestadoras de Serviços Ambientais (PSAs). A maioria das empresas PSAs iniciaram suas atividades com o apoio de grandes EPRs, principalmente, em função das suas necessidades de atender às exigências legais do órgão ambiental estadual, a Fundação Estadual de Proteção Ambiental (FEPAM), para a adequada disposição de resíduos perigosos. É importante salientar que não existe um diagnóstico sobre o setor de prestação de serviços ambientais no RS para resíduos industriais perigosos. Desta maneira, o objetivo deste trabalho foi o de identificar e priorizar as características da qualidade dos serviços ambientais de nove PSAs selecionados pelas próprias EPRs, durante o ano de 2013, por meio da adoção do Quality Function Deployment (QFD). O resultado piloto aponta a proatividade do setor nas características de empreendedorismo e inovação e no atendimento à legislação ambiental.

A COMMITTEE, representing a number of the larger oil companies in California, met in San Francisco on Nov. 12, 1919, for the purpose of discussing the depletion deductions to be allowed in computing the Federal income taxes under the Internal Revenue Act of 1918. It was the general sense of the committee that a system based on sound engineering principles should be formulated for estimating the value of oil properties, so that better and more uniform results might be obtained by the various companies in filing their returns with the' Bureau of Internal Revenue. A subcommittee, consisting of five petroleum engineers, was thereupon appointed to collect information and draft a report. The committee consisted of G. C. Gester, Carl H. Beal, J. H. G. Wolf, E. G. Gaylord, and E. D. Nolan; this report is the work of that subcommittee.

In the mid-to-late 1800’s the U.S. mining industry was on the threshold of nearly a century of golden times. Nearly every state had a prosperous and growing mining sector. The importance of the industry was reflected in the creation of the state school of mines. Today, with the depletion of readily available mineral reserves, much of the U.S. metals mining industry is considered to be in a sunset phase. The same is true with the mining schools that serve the industry. However, the United States is still a major consumer of the world’s minerals and requires a dependable supply of both minerals and minerals professionals. In his 2002 Jackling Lecture “You Can’t Make a Silk Purse Out of a Sow’s Ear” the author presented a list of concerns, propositions and recommendations. In this follow-up paper, the author further explores the subject through the presentation of a detailed case example focusing on the iron mining industry of Minnesota and minerals education at the University of Minnesota.

The leaching of heaps or sub-marginal waste ore dumps as it is practiced throughout the Southwest as well as other parts of the world, is the major method of secondary recovery of copper. In 1970, twenty percent of all domestic copper was produced by dump leaching operations (l). In recent years, this method has been successfully extended on a limited scale, for the recovery of uranium from low-grade ores (2). It is inevitable that this technique will be increasingly employed in metal production to satisfy the insatiable demand of our mineral based society. Although dump and heap leaching has been used effectively for some time (3) , its application has been more of an art than a science. Therefore, it is essential that we learn about the important factors and parameters affecting this versatile process so that we may make increasing use of this technique in the future. The dump or heap leaching process encompasses the preparation of ore for-subsequent inplace leaching, the flow of solutions and ionic species through porous rock masses, the leaching of minerals with inexpensive and, if possible, regenerable lixiviants under prevailing conditions of the inplace environment, and the recovery of metals from the pregnant liquors. It is evident that this comprehensive scope of dump or heap leaching falls under the realm of interdisciplinary science and engineering requiring the application of the principles of physics, mineral engineering, hydrology, computer modeling, operations research, economics, and allied disciplines. It is indeed a pleasure to be here this morning to open the 4th Mill Operators' Conference. It is no mean feat to organise such an event and I would like to congratulate the committee for the work that they have done. I am sure that the Conference will be an outstanding success. I welcome overseas visitors and hope that they gain and share in the openness of this Conference. There is personal satisfaction for me to speak to you as a mining engineer addressing a large group of metallurgists and mill operators. I would have thought that it would be impossible for a mere mining engineer to inform a metallurgist of anything. I will desist from using such derogatory terms as "xanthate munchers", "bubble makers" and "glorified mathematicians". Terms of endearment as these may not be seen with much equanimity. Such is the warm association that the two professions have enjoyed over the years. The economic climate that we at present face is a major problem to all of us. I wonder how many people here come from mining operations that are in trouble financially or that are cutting back in one form or another. This is the recession that we needed to have. When the world's greatest treasurer can tell us that then we truly have a lot to fear. The present downturn can be seen as a normal adjustment in the cycle of our business. Yet the world does not experience such severe adjustments as frequently as we experience ours. The root cause for the regular adjustments can be placed at the feet of inflation. Until the politicians of this country of ours can come to grips with inflation, we will continue to experience downturns on a 5 to 7 year cycle. This, in my opinion, is the basic reason why we appear to experience more downturns than the rest of the world. We simply price ourselves out of the market. This takes about 5 to 7 years to be highlighted and then we need to make adjustments. However, this recession is worldwide. The adjustments usually take the form of redundancies, retrenchments and early retirements. What is the solution?

In the latter part of the 1980?s Outokumpu Chrome in Tornio, Finland, was in a situation when its twenty-year-old ferrochrome plant was becoming inefficient to sustain economically sound production. The company made extensive studies on the then available processing methods to find out the best possible processing route. As a result the whole plant was practically rebuilt and expanded. When equipment was proven in practical operation an application for FeMn production was developed. Now when Tornio FeCr-plant is considering the expansion the same type of exercise is to be performed with today?s challenges, which will be discussed in the paper. These challenges include increasing costs or decreasing quality of raw materials, increasing energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and demand of better working conditions. The possibilities to respond to these challenges will be discussed in the paper. The future and continuing development with FeCr includes the better utilization of process dusts and a lower consumption of energy. By adapting the latest automation tools to better control of the process even higher efficiencies can be achieved with present technology. New processes are considered for development in the future and some possible technologies will be described.

Coal mining is one of the major sources of methane release to the atmosphere by human industrial activities and is believed to contribute to -30% of the total methane emissions from industrial activities. In 1993, world saleable black coal production, attained almost 3.5 billion tonnes from which around 65% was produced underground. Coal in underground mines can contain high quantities of methane and some deep coal seams have methane content as high as 50 cubic meters per tonne of coal. Gas is re- leased during coal mining from the mined seam and in a higher degree from the neighboring unmined seams and gas bearing strata which are fractured as mining advances. This paper de- scribes a study which was undertaken to estimate the extent of methane emissions from coal mining in the world. Measured emission related data were collected from most underground coal producing countries in the world. The data included methane flows in the ventilation system, methane flows in gas drainage system, in-situ gas content, methane utilization and coal production. More comprehensive data were collected from a range of gassy and non-gassy Australian mines. Residual gas content of samples from run of mine were also measured. Using the Australian data, mathematical expressions were established to evaluate methane emissions as a function of coal production and in-situ gas content for other mines. These emission models were then used to evaluate the emissions for the countries or coal basins without measured emission data. Trends in methane emissions from underground mining for the year 2000 and beyond were also estimated.

MINERAL industry activities have not been seriously hampered by a lack of men with higher training. The balance between opportunities for employment and advancement and available personnel has been a happy one, with enough competition to stimulate effort but not the unfortunate conditions arising from an overabundance. of employment seekers. Nearly all mineral industry educational institutions have been concerned about the falling enrollment in mining and metallurgical courses of study during the past decade. But industry has drawn upon a supply of many types of technically trained men apart from those who prepared their careers specifically in the mineral industry. Some schools have made this possible by uniting geologists, mineralogists, and others with students in mining and engineering. On the other hand, some schools have combined their department of mining engineering with an over-all engineering department and continue to send their graduates into the mineral industry by another route. On the whole, this seems to be a good trend and is likely to result in men better trained for current problems than would have been possible under the older rigid curricula.

DURING the morning session," on Feb. 17, papers were presented and discussed regarding a recent wire saw installation, cement rock quarry operations, hydration factors in gypsum deposits and the status of the phosphate industry of the West. Oliver Bolvles presided and there were about twenty-five members present. W. M. Weigel's paper (T. P. 262), "The Application of the Wire Saw in Marble Quarrying," was read by the author. He described the recent installation of the St. Clair Marble Co., near Guion, Ark. Since the use of the wire saw for quarrying is comparatively new and the fact that it has been almost entirely limited to slate quarries heretofore, ?he description and data given in this paper were of much interest.

Mechanochemical activation of starting minerals and their effect on the solid-phase synthesis and properties of ceramics with lower thermal expansion coefficient was examined. The mineral mixture, pyrophyllite-gibbsite-lithium carbonate, was prepared for the synthesis of ?-eucryptite (Li2O•Al2O3•2SiO2). Dry grinding using a planetary ball mill promoted the amorphization of the starting mixtures. XRD and FT-IR results showed that the crystallization of the target materials occurred from the ground mixtures by calcination. The crystallization of them increased with increment of grinding time and calcination temperature. In the synthesis, the trace of undesired phases such as quartz and cristobalite once formed during calcination at the temperature range from 750 to 850 °C almost disappeared and monophase ?-eucryptite was formed in the ground mixture at 950 °C. "The Dumont deposit is a large (1066 Mt probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the deposit through pre-feasibility. And updated, revised pre-feasibility was released in July 2012.The disseminated nickel sulphide and alloy mineralization is hosted within the serpentinized dunite subzone of the Dumont Sill; a differentiated, pervasively serpentinized, ultramafic sill of komatitic affinity. Pentlandite, heazlewoodite and awaruite are the dominant nickel-bearing, metallic phases and can be recovered by conventional methods (flotation, mag separation). Non-recoverable nickel is also present within the silicate matrix of the serpentinized dunite and is locked in serpentine (Fe and Mg-rich variants) and minor olivine.A detailed mineralogical program including 1097 QEMSCAN® samples and 4300 electron microprobe points were undertaken to increase the understanding of the nickel deportment in the various recoverable and non-recoverable phases in a spatial context across the deposit. Eighty-three (83) metallurgical tests performed under a standard procedure have linked the mineralogy to metallurgical performance. This has allowed the creation and modelling of geometallurgical domains on a block by block basis to understand the recovery variation and metallurgical performance throughout the deposit. Understanding the spatial variability of Ni deportment in recoverable and non-recoverable phases through mineralogy is the key to understanding metallurgical performance thus, unlocking the value of the Dumont deposit and other large tonnage low grade ultramafic nickel deposits."

ONE of the problems encountered in working with metals at elevated temperatures is the instability resulting from solid-solid diffusion at a -common interface. A determination of the nature and magnitude of this phenomenon is important as related to structural properties of materials potentially useful in high temperature applications. This paper is concerned with the solid state reaction between metallic molybdenum and beryllium at elevated temperatures. In the older literature,' there were no known inter-metallic compounds in the system Be-Mo, and the list of beryllium intermetallics was rather small. New compilations have been made by Smithells' and by Taylor," listing all the then known beryllium binary intermetallic compounds. In addition to these, some new phases have just been reported' in the system Zr-Be and some further compounds of the type MBe,3 have been currently described. The new compound MoBe,, which is reported upon in this paper differs considerably from the above mentioned MBe13 group, and will be discussed in detail. Diffusion Study The nature of the solid diffusion at a Mo-Be interface was determined by sealing a beryllium rod inside a molybdenum capsule and heating at a temperature of 2000°F' (1100°C) for 100 hr. The molybdenum capsule was fabricated from % in. swaged molybdenum rod obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. The beryllium metal was obtained from Brush Beryllium Corp. as % in. cold-drawn rod. This material assayed 99.05 pct Be and contained as impurities 0.84 pct Be0 and 0.19 pct Be2C. The molybdenum capsule was % in. in OD x 2 in. long. To prepare it, a concentric hole 0.250 in. + 0.001 in. — 0.000 in. in diam was drilled and reamed in one end of a rod to a depth of 1 '/2 in. A 1 in. long beryllium rod 0.250 in. + 0.000 in. — 0.001 in. in diam was pressed into the molybdenum capsule. A molybdenum plug 0.250 in. & 0.001 in. in diam x 9/16 in. long was then used to seal the beryllium in place. The capsules were placed in a molybdenum resistance furnace and heated at 2000°F (1100°C) for 100 hr. On cooling, the specimens were cut and examined metallographically. Fig. 1 is a micrograph at X250 of a portion of the interface from a transverse section. Four phases are clearly visible, with sharp boundaries between them. Phase A is a section of the molybdenum capsule; phase B is the molybdenum-rich intermetallic composition MoBe,; phase C is the beryllium-rich compound MoBe13; phase D is a section of the beryllium rod. All phases were readily polished to a high metallic luster. The molybdenum-rich phase has a pronounced purple tinge. The beryllium-rich phase (C) is only slightly darker than the pure beryllium. In polarized reflected light, however, it shows striking birefringence between crossed Nicols. The black areas represent flaws or pores in the material. A small representative amount of powdered material from each of the phases was carefully removed under the microscope with a diamond tool. With this material, powder X-ray diffraction patterns were made for the identification of each phase. Table I lists the X-ray diffraction spacings and corresponding indexes characteristic of these intermetallic compounds. Synthesis To establish the formula of the new intermetallic compound, X-ray diffraction patterns were made from powders obtained from solidified melts of known composition. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resinsmay serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. To prevent coal dust explosion propagations, rock dust needs to be lifted and suspended in the air with the coal dust during an explosion. The addition of anti-caking agents prevents caking of rock dust in the presence of water. Mining and rock dusting processes can frequently create alternating layers of rock dust and float coal dust on mine surfaces. For this test series, a thin layer of coal dust was distributed on top of a layer of either treated or non-treated rock dust in the Experimental Mine Barbara, Poland. The experimental results compare the effectiveness of treated and non-treated rock dusts to attenuate a propagating coal dust explosion initiated with either strong or weak methane explosions. Experimental results indicate that the treated rock dust performs better than non-treated rock dust in arresting a propagating explosion, especially in the presence of moisture.

Introduction The Red Dog zinc/lead deposit in northwest Alaska is the second largest zinc deposit ever discovered. Being developed by Cominco Alaska, with startup scheduled for early 1990, it will ultimately be the largest zinc mine in the Western World. Table 1 shows the reserves of the deposit. Bob Baker, a local bush pilot, discovered Red Dog in 1968. The US Geological Survey assessed the find. But the Red Dog site had been withdrawn from staking by provisions in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA). Under the terms of ANCSA, the deposit was selected by the NANA Regional Corporation, one of 13 native corporations established by the Act. Then, in 1980, the US Congress confirmed this selection, in the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. In 1982, Cominco and NANA reached an agreement that has led to the development of the mine. Under the agreement, Cominco leases the property from NANA, develops and operates the mine, and markets the concentrate produced. In return, NANA receives royalties and, after capital recovery, participates in the net proceeds from the operation. The Alaska State Government is also playing a role in the development of the mine. Under the auspices of the Alaska Industrial Development Authority (AIDA), the state will construct, own, and operate the DeLong Mountains Regional Transportation System. This consists of a 84-km (52¬mile) road from the minesite to the Chukchi Sea. Located here are the port facilities necessary to store and ship the annual concentrate production and receive the mine fuel and supplies. For using this transportation system, Cominco will pay an annual toll fee. Over the anticipated 50 year life of the operation, the fee will provide a 6.5% return to the State of Alaska. In late 1986, Cominco's Board of Directors approved the Red Dog project. And, during the summer of 1987, road construction began. In February 1988, initial stripping began at the ore body and construction started at the millsite. Project setting The project site is approximately 1000 km (600 miles) northwest of Anchorage, 84 km (52 miles) east of tidewater on the Chukchi Sea, and 192 km (120 miles) north of the Arctic Circle (Fig. 1). The countryside consists of low, rolling hills that lead into mountains north and east of the deposit. The vegetation is typical tundra mat. And the site is in an area of permafrost. However, the permafrost is relatively warm and some areas have been found to be thawed. Examples would be creek bottoms and the site of the main waste dump.
