The small town of Bruce Mines lies a few miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on the north shore of Lake Huron. This was the site of the first copper mine. This copper smelter used a reverberatory furnace, based on the Welsh process, and operated in the period of 1849 to 1850, when the plant was destroyed by fire. During the period of 1850 to about 1869, crushed and sorted ore was shipped to England and later to the United States. In 1869, a roastleach plant, based on the Henderson Process, was constructed at Bruce Mines and was operated until about 1872. This short article describes the early development of this historic operation. Although the rich copper ore found in the vicinity of Bruce Mines was known to the Indians, its discovery in or about 184 7 was credited to Mr. Keating, who named the area Bruce in honour of Lord Elgin (James Bruce), Canada's Governor General. In 1848, the property was acquired by the Montreal Mining Company for 40 000 pounds sterling and the company immediately sent a small party to investigate the deposit. The party sank a shaft on a lode within a hundred yards of the lake and also reported two adjacent lodes farther inland, which were left undeveloped until the turn of the century. Initially, the foundation of the headframe and hoist was built above the frost line and when the machinery was set in motion it collapsed. Eventually, the shaft was to reach a depth of 300 feet. By 1849, the property was well established and the small settlement consisted of 77 miners, 65 labourers, 4 boys, 11 tradesmen, including blacksmiths and carpenters, 2 mining captains, 1 engineer, 2 clerks and 1 superintendent. The community, including the workers' families, numbered about 250.

The close area! relationship of Cretaceous or later intrusive porphyries to larger hydrothermal deposits of Pb, Zn, Au, fig, Cu, Mo, Hg,, and U of similar age in the Basin Range Province, was statistically shown in a recent paper (Stringham1) During the past year this study has been expanded to cover p11 of the larger hydrothermal deposits of similar nature occurring in the entire western United States. The sandstone type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau and Wyoming have been excluded since considerable controversy exists regarding their origin. The close relationship between intrusives in general and hydrothermal ore deposits has long been-recognized, but the association involving intrusive porphyry only, was suggested in 1954 when Sales concluded that the formation of porphyry may be an intermediate stage of activity between the development of granitoid rock and certain types of copper deposits. However: he applied this concept to only a few copper deposits. The relationship appears to be true also for a great majority of the hydrothermal deposits of the other metals mentioned above of Cretaceous and later age, at least in the western United States. This situation then leads to the conclusion then when exploring for similar types of hydrothermal deposits of the metals considered one may feel reasonably sure that if an intrusive porphyry of considerable size is. not present he may be facing much greater risk of finding an ore body than if a prophyry were presents Since, there are many intrusive porphyritic rocks which do not seem to be associated with hydrothermal deposit, it is believed that some distinct value can come from the recognition of intrusive porphyry which might be barren as well as the intrusive prophyry which might be productive This paper deals with that problem.

This paper deals with specifying and evaluating fans for mine ventilation projects. Topics such as fan and equipment design life, operating points, and operating conditions are discussed. Common operating problems, such as vibration, parallel operation, mechanical failure, erosion, corrosion, and deficient fan performance are covered. Apart from identifying the potential operating problems, likely causes and suggested remedies are given. Fan type, fan accessories, and likely system effects and fan testing are discussed. Suggestions on what should be covered when evaluating different fan options and proposals and suggestions on the verification of supplier claims and guarantees, including cost of operation, the evaluation of initial capital cost, estimate on maintenance costs, and likely replacement expenditure over the life of the fans. In addition, fan reliability, operational flexibility, suggested construction details and fan vendor past history and experience are reviewed.

In-pit identification of neutral waste rock at the Zortman and Landusky minesites in Montana, by visual and chemical analy­ses, will assist in proper segregation and placement of rock so that soil and water resources can be protected. The use of too few or very general segregation criteria to identify neutral waste rock can result in ineffective waste rock segregation. Conversely, the use of overly restrictive criteria can result in the unnecessary loss of valuable reclamation material that would otherwise have to be mined elsewhere and hauled to the site. Recognition of nonre­active materials can be accomplished on a site specific basis with the use of visual observation and simple chemical analyses. The choice of chemical parameters used to analyze rock samples is constrained by the length of time needed to conduct the test. These analyses must require no more than 24 hours to complete so mining can proceed without delay. Limits set for the chosen parameters must be reasonable and defensible. To achieve these objectives over one thousand samples were collected at the Zortman and Landusky minesites and clas­sified by rock type, total sulfur content, paste pH, and net neu­tralizing potential (NNP). In addition, over 22 humidity cell kinetic tests were conducted to help corroborate static results for waste rock. Another 8 humidity cells were configured in series to test waste rock blending and waste rock/limestone capping alternatives as mitigation for acid rock drainage. Leachates were analyzed for pH, conductivity, alkalinity, acidity, sulfate, Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Mg, and Cr in some cases. Petrographic analysis, as well as total sulfur content, paste pH, and static and kinetic test results identified three geochem­ically different waste rock groups: 1) Archean amphibolite gneiss and Paleozoic carbonates and shales, 2) Tertiary syenite porphyry, and 3) other less abundant Tertiary igneous and Archean metamorphic rocks.

Given the limited number of new plant construction, focus is turning to the optimization of existing metallurgical roasting plants. To meet the goals of high process efficiency with limited capital expenditure, plant owners are looking for new strategies, including digitization and expert support. As a supplier for numerous roasting, gas cleaning and sulfuric acid plants, Outotec has intensified its effort in recent years to develop solutions to accommodate increasing customer need. This article presents a short review on how Outotec is applying advanced control tools for the fluidized bed industry. Focus will be given on how to transfer the existing technology (used in selected Zinc roasting plants for over a year now) to copper roasting. Outotec has developed the Pretium Roaster Optimizer, a system based on heat and mass-balanced simulation models. Direct experience with this technology will be shared and will highlight similarities to the Partial and Sulfate Copper roasting processes. Pretium detects equipment and plant bottlenecks and provides consistency in process development. The Pretium program combines 24/7 advanced online digitalization tools, along with expert personal support when required. INTRODUCTION Fluidized bed reactors have been used for commercial-scale zinc and copper roasting since the 1950s. While the principles of roasting remain unchanged, over time, the technology has advanced to improve process control of roasting plants. In the past, environmental and safety standards were the driving forces for improvement of equipment and plant design. Today, the emphasis is on plant efficiency and optimization. Another change has come in process control philosophy. While plant control and operation have traditionally been the responsibility of owner/operators, they have now shifted to include both integrated digital tools and specific know-how from engineering companies. This can be seen from the earliest design stages through commissioning and into production, as evidenced by zinc roasting plants in Mexico, Brazil and Turkey.

"The processing behaviours of ores such as their liberation characteristics in comminution and their response in separation processes are affected by their mineralogical characteristics. Key ore characteristics which are relevant to processing, such as mineral proportions, mineral grain size, grain shape and mineral associations are routinely measured at the micro-scale in polished section using optical microscopes and SEM-based automated mineralogy systems. The application of X-ray micro-tomography to mineral processing provides the means to quantify these important micro-textural characteristics in three dimensions, removing the stereological issues encountered when measuring volumetric information in two-dimensional polished sections. In this paper we present several examples of ore textures to illustrate where X-ray micro-tomography can be applied successfully to obtain quantitative measures of ore characteristics which are useful in a variety of process modelling applications.INTRODUCTION X-ray tomography has been used as a tool in medicine for some years and is being applied in a wider range of fields including geology, palaeontology and mineralogy. In this paper we present some applications of X-ray tomography in mineral processing applications being developed at JKMRC. The availability of SEM-based automated mineralogy systems such as MLA and QEMSCAN has seen the increased use of quantitative mineralogical data measured in two dimensions in the design, operation and simulation of mineral processing plants. When the ore is amenable to measurement by X-ray tomography this technique can provide quantitative data for characteristics such as mineral grain size, shape, mineral associations and liberation in three-dimensions. The advantage of measuring these characteristics in three-dimensions is that the stereological issues which bias measurements made on polished sections are removed. X-ray tomography also quantifies the location of mineral grains relative to one another in space - a useful descriptor of ore texture. Like many measurement techniques X-ray tomography has advantages and disadvantages when compared to other techniques. One limitation is that the ability of the X-ray tomography system to discriminate between minerals is a function of the X-ray attenuation of those minerals. While the X-ray attenuation of many common minerals is sufficiently different for X-ray tomography to distinguish between them, there are some where the overlap in X-ray attenuation makes discrimination on the basis of this characteristic alone impossible. An example of this would be chalcopyrite and magnetite. However where the ore mineralogy is suitable to apply X-ray tomography, the technique provides some exciting opportunities to explore the relationship between texture and ore processability."

"An approach slab is the roadway segment that immediately follows a bridge intended to provide a smooth transition between the two elements. Some approach slabs have developed rough rideability with time due to differential settlement between the roadway embankment and the bridge. Soils in south Louisiana are generally poor and highly compressible and, therefore, pile-supported approach slabs were occasionally used. Timber piles of variable lengths are driven into the soft soils where no appreciable toe support exists. This resulted in the soils both supporting loads through shaft resistance and yet experiencing long-term consolidation settlement. Field testing and review of the records of over 120 approach slabs constructed in south Louisiana yielded the conclusion that their performance is primarily governed by negative skin friction (downdrag) imposed on the relatively short timber piles. A software (TU-DRAG) was developed to evaluate the deflection profile of a pile-supported approach slab based on its geometry and conditions of the underlying soils. It evaluates the effect of dragload considering the number and spacing of the piles at each transverse row and their variable lengths along the approach slab. TU-DRAG was utilized in the design of two transportation related projects which have been in service for more than 10 years.INTRODUCTIONThe problem of differential settlement at bridge approaches or “the bump at the bridge” has been recognized for many years. Research studies (1986, 1989, 1997, 2009 and 2013) by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provided comprehensive evaluations of the performance of bridge approach slabs by assessing their field conditions and construction and maintenance records. Various states have also performed their own studies to investigate the performance of bridge approach slabs. The studies considered various types of structures including soil- and pile-supported approach slabs, integral bridge abutments and open-end abutments. Recommendations were provided for the design of new structures and for maintaining and repairing existing structures. Guidelines were offered regarding tolerable movements of bridges and their foundations based on measurements of vertical and horizontal movements of 580 bridges Moulton (1986). Vertical and horizontal movements greater than 102 mm (4 inches) and 51 mm (2 inches), respectively, were considered intolerable. Tolerable limits for angular distortion (differential settlement to span length) were suggested to be 1/250 and 1/200 for continuous and simple spans, respectively. It was reported that a differential settlement greater than 13 mm (0.5 inch) at the bridge interface would be sufficient to constitute a “bump” requiring mitigation."

Tais filmes finos são em sua maioria constituídos de ligas metálicas, metais puros e materiais cerâmicos, como óxidos e nitretos. As propriedades físicas e químicas de cada camada afetam diretamente as propriedades ópticas e a performance do produto. Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo das propriedades ópticas de filmes finos de Nitreto de Silício, depositados por Magnetron Sputtering Reativo sobre substrato de vidro Soda-Cálcio.

Coal was produced in this state, by white men, at an earlier date than in any state west of the Mississippi River, and for many years its production was larger than that of any state in that area. The coal immediately adjacent to St. Louis was mined commercially earlier than elsewhere because of a ready market which could be reached by teams. Generally the coal seams are more or less "spotty" in character, and in many places openings made in thick coal could only be mined for a few years. All of the data available from state survey reports, county histories and a few other sources are shown in Table 66.

IN spite of a world production of lead amounting to 1,300,000 tons, of which the United States produces slightly less than one-half, it appears that the mines at present are hardly able to supply the demand. For this there are several reasons. The lead deposits, geologically speaking, were formed comparatively near the surface under conditions of lower temperatures, with the richer deposits often residuary; that is, enriched by surface water, and consequently soon exhausted. Lead is practically absent from a great part of the world. The great Canadian shield, the eastern part of the Dominion, contains practically none. Scandinavia contains no lead. It is absent from geo- logical formations of great age, but does occur in large quantities in the deposits in the Rocky Mountain region. These deposits are, more or less directly, of igneous origin, but here, too, there is a tendency of the lead shoots to concentrate in the upper part, and when they go down the deposits turn to zinc-copper and some other metals. This is one of the best established facts of economic geology. The deposits of the Mississippi Valley district, from Kansas-Oklahoma, to Canada, are in comparatively accessible limestone beds, at a depth seldom more than 500 ft. Therefore, the lead is easily mined but more easily exhausted.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, ROMA, Norway, furnace, fines The ROMA project is a competence project on optimizing the usage of raw materials and energy in the ferromanganese, silicon, and aluminium industries. One of the items investigated in this project is the effect of fines on the furnace, and the usage of agglomerates versus lumpy ore. From lab-scale experiments it is shown, that for the charge to agglomerate in the furnace, the charge has to be exposed to a temperature higher than about 1200°C, independent of fines content. The fines less than 1 mm also showed higher agglomeration properties, compared to 2?4 mm, which showed no agglomeration property at all. The properties of agglomerates are very dependent on the pre-treatment of the agglomerate. Sinter and pellets, which have been heated to high temperatures, show a better strength, but also a lower CO reactivity. Sinter also shows a lower melting temperature compared to the ore.

New developments have occurred in Wyoming's industrial minerals industry since the 32nd Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals in Laramie, Wyoming in 1996. The soda ash trona and bentonite industries have experienced overall growth. Gypsum and limestone production have remained constant, but have the potential for dramatic growth. The mining of zeolite ceased in 1997. The struggling dimension stone industry has increased production, but development has lagged behind the schedule predicted in 1996. The construction of a container glass plant and associated production of glass raw materials, as predicted in 1996 and imminent in 1998, is now on hold due to unforeseen market factors. Increases in railroad and highway construction have, and will, greatly increase the production of construction aggregate for local uses. An iron carbide industry, not foreseen in 1996, is in the planning stages.

The dissolution behaviors of valuable metals, lead and zinc, from secondary fly ash generated in municipal incineration plants were investigated using some lixiviants: sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, acetic acid and some chelating reagents including L-asparaginic-N,N-diacetic acid (ASDA), a biodegradable, and therefore, environmentally benign novel chelating reagent. It was found that zinc exists mainly as ZnO, whereas Pb probably as PbOHCI and PbO, and the easily soluble components in SFA are KCI and NaCl. Suitable amount of HCI can dissolve all of lead and zinc from SFA. Sulfuric acid can selectively extract zinc leaving lead in the residue. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is an effective chelating reagent to extract both zinc and lead. Although ASDA and diethylene¬triaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) can selectively extract more than half of lead from SFA, it would by no means be regarded as highly effective reagents for the extraction of these metal values. Fe-V alloys with small percentages of vanadium show no deviations from Sieverts' Law up to P~, = 1 atm in the 1600º to 1750ºC region. At somewhat under 8 pct V and up to at least 20pct V, at 1604" and 1661 °C, nitrogen absorption follows Sieverts' Law at low Pn2 values, but deviates from this law beyond critical values of pn2, due to formation of a nitrzde phase of approximately VN composition. The behavior below these solubility limits can be described at all temperatures by the equations: RAO and parlee1 suggested that the nitrogen absorption curve for liquid iron alloys takes the general form shown in Fig. 1 when an alloy nitride precipitate is formed. They showed that the precipitation of 6 titanium nitride from liquid Fe-Ti alloys follows this general scheme and dealt with the general theory involved. Recently, Evans and Pehlke2 reported their research on the precipitation of aluminum nitride from liquid Fe-A1 alloys. Fountain and Chipman's recent paper3 on the precipitation of boron nitride from solid solution contains a fine example of the analogous behavior which they have been studying in the solid state. Researches on the absorption of nitrogen by liquid Fe-V alloys have been described by various authors.1,4-7 Most of this work has been confined to fairly low vanadium concentrations and rather high temperatures because of difficulties variously described as, formation of surface scums, bridging, and so forth. This behavior and the rough thermo- dynamic calculations made by chipman,8 over eleven years ago, indicated that excessively high vanadium concentrations should not be required for vanadium nitride precipitation. It seemed desirable to look for and study this precipitation in order to fill out the thermodynamically interesting nitrogen absorption data on these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The general method used was essentially the same as employed by Rao and parlee,1 in which a Sieverts type of apparatus was used and the precipitation of the nitride detected by the "break-point" in the Sieverts' Law line, and by the visual observation of the formation of the new phase on the surface of the melt. There were, however, a few differences in apparatus and technique as described below. The oil manometer used by Rao and parlee' to measure low partial pressures of nitrogen was not employed. The present authors sought to avoid as much as possible the exposure of the liquid alloy to low total pressures of gas during the 6 to 10 hr long runs because of the heavy iron evaporation-loss errors involved. This was achieved, partly by keeping evacuation times to a minimum with fast pumping but largely by the use of two burettes, one for argon and one for nitrogen, and using them to equilibrate the alloy with mixtures of argon and nitrogen rather than nitrogen alone. This study presents the procedure of mine modelling and reserve evaluation by means of statistics, computer interpolation methods and aerophotography interpretation. All data are from Carbonifera Treviso, Laura Muller City, Santa Catarina State, southernmost Brazil. From 22 bore holes and nine trenches opened in the coal seam outcrops, a data base including level references and thickness of all rock formations was created.Using this information, basic statistic analysis was carried out, showing that there are three different populations (three modal distribution). These populations defined three geological blocks with different characteristics of overburden removal and mining methodology. This mathematical approach for analysing geological data is very important for correct mine planning and complementary prospection.

To determine the nahcolite and dawsonite content in oil shales, the Bureau of Mines compared X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermal methods, and a previously published method by Smith and Young based on the selective solubility of sodium compounds. The Smith and Young method and a new method based on the weight of carbon dioxide produced by thermal decomposition are recommended for determining nahcolite. X-ray diffraction and the Smith and Young method are recommended for determining dawsonite. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis were useful for identifying other minerals in the samples.

This is the more appropriate, since Mr. Morse has mentioned me by name, and has cited my "Review of the Russell Process,"* so that silence on my part might be taken as indicating an assent which I cannot give. On the first page of his paper Mr. Morse says that the " goingback " of chlorination was " the only difficulty encountered at Aspen," and adds that he has " never seen any explanation " of the cause. Mining is both a high risk and a long term business. This is dramatically illustrated by the fact that, on average, the explorer will expend over $30 million in a ten year period for each significant economic discovery. The time required to complete the exploration process is one of the most substantial commitments made by any mining company. For example the time lag between the implementation of an exploration programme and an economic discovery is variously estimated to take two to ten years. The ore definition phase following discovery currently takes between two and five years while subsequent mine development may take one to two years in easy situations and up to 8 in difficult environments. In most countries the critical path through the early stages is determined largely by technical considerations but in almost all countries the path through the later phases is dictated by the plethora of permits, licences and community involvement steps.
