This presentation addresses some of the problems encountered in estimating the capacity of drilled shafts and augered, cast-in-place piles in soft rock. Methods to quantify side and base resistance are suggested. However, the methods that are described should always be verified locally by performing load tests.

Sheets of the magnesium alloys AZ31B, HK31A, and ZE10A in several different tempers were tested in tension and determinations were made of the ratio of width-to-thickness strain. A marked increase in the ratio with tensile straining and a dependence upon alloy and test direction are rationalized in terms of a balance between the amounts of basal and prism-plane slip. All such variations are related, in turn, to the prevailing crystallographic texture. Fracture appearance is explained on the basis of anisotropy in plastic flow, and implications for developing texture -hardening effects in these alloys are discussed. ThE crystallographic texture or preferred orientation of a given material is determined by details of processing history. Such texture is known to influence many aspects of material behavior, in particular both the yielding and strain-hardening characteristics which are of special interest in the present work. Traditionally, the resulting plastic anisotropy has not been regarded as especially desirable. Earing in drawn sheet is perhaps the most common example of an unwanted effect of texture. However, it has also been recognized that suitable textures may be usefully employed to improve drawability,1,2 as a specific example, and generally to control yielding resistance under combined-stress loading.374 Texture would seem to be a detail of structure not yet exploited to nearly the fullest extent. A convenient basis for characterizing anisotropy in plastic behavior is the ratio of width-to-thickness strains obtained in a tension test;5&apos;6 the parameter is frequently labeled "R" and its value is revealing with respect to the nature of the prevailing texture. R gives a useful measure of a material&apos;s "thinning resistance". For an isotropic material, R = 1. With R > 1 the increased through-thickness strength in a sheet means greater resistance to yielding under biaxial tension, or "texture hardening";3&apos;4 if R < 1 the result may be a "texture softening" under the same loading conditions.4 Most R data relate to steel sheets for deep-drawing applications. Values for steel and other materials of cubic structures are not often much greater than 1 and nearly constant with strain in testing.1,2,7,8 To explore the implications of plastic anisotropy further, it was felt that experiments with much more strongly textured materials would be useful, and this led to the choice of magnesium alloys. The "ideal" sheet texture for magnesium contains the (0001) plane in the rolling plane, which ought to lead to R values approaching infinity. However, departures from the ideal texture, the possibility of slip in non-close-packed directions, and deformation by twinning would all be expected to introduce some range of R. Accordingly, studies on these materials were undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys in sheet form, Table I, were selected to obtain a variation in crystallographic texture, in the expectation that this would be reflected in differences in plastic anisotropy. Pole figures constructed by the Schulz surface-reflection technique9 were provided with the experimental materials by the Dow Metal Products Co. Profiles of pole density along great circles through the rolling (0 deg) and transverse (90 deg) directions were prepared from the pole figures and are collected in Figs. 1 and 2; considerable departure from the "ideal" (0001) alignment in the rolling plane is evident, with the largest angular spread in both directions being found in the ZEl0 alloy. Results of tensile tests on full-thickness specimens of 6-in. gage length by 1/2-in. width are given in Fig. 3 as engineering stress-strain curves* in rolling and transverse directions. All tests but one were made at a constant drive rate of 0.02 in. per min, and the final values of percent elongation at fracture, over the initial 6-in. gage length, are noted at the ends of the curves; one test on ZE10A-

Minerals are the basis of modern civilization: their exploitation and effective utilization are a yard- stick for measuring the comparative prosperity of different nations. This is particularly true in India where industrialization is just beginning to pick up speed. Production targets for our Fourth Five Year Plan (1966-71) are far ahead of the figures for, say, 1950 (the year we won independence) and show the extent of the expansion. Many problems remain to be solved, not least of which is the shortage of raw materials. India is no novice at utilizing minerals. Archaeological ruins at Harappa and at other historical places in the country show evidence of the fact that the ancient Indians not only knew the art of winning minerals from the ground over 6000 years ago-they were also well acquainted with metallurgy. Some of the present sites of mineral exploitation are the same as those our ancestors worked for many centuries.

Because several new and unusual synthetic minerals were found in the system MgO-MgF₂ - SiO2 with Li * , or Nat a similar system with Geo₂ replacing Sio , plus Lit was investigated . In addition to the expected compounds of germanium , Ge - fluor - hectorite and a Ge - fluor- chrysotile were synthesized . Protoamphibole was not observed . Data are given for 69 compositions prepared in the system MgO- MgF₂ - Ge02 at 6.94 percent LiF .

IN experiments on tantalum strained in tension, Bechtold did not observe deformation-twinning even at a temperature as low as that of liquid air.&apos; This is an unexpected behavior for a metal of body-centered-cubic structure. Therefore, it is desirable to determine whether the lack of twinning is an inherent characteristic of this particular metal, or whether the reluctance to twin can be overcome under suitable conditions. The following experiments were performed under conditions favorable to twinning and cleavage in their competition with slip, namely, with impact loading on large-grained sheet at low temperatures. The crystallography of cleavage in tantalum sheet was also investigated carefully because of the remarkable ductility of tantalum at low temperatures and because recent tests on oxygen-embrittled tantalum had disclosed unusual cleavage behavior for a metal of this structure: cleavage primarily on (110) planes and only occasionally on {100}.2 The tantalum, supplied by Fansteel, was of 99.9 pet purity, with the chief impurities being iron (0.03 pet) and carbon (0.03 pet). Coarse grains were produced by the strain-anneal method, the anneal being 4 hr at 2000°C in a vacuum of 10-3 mm Hg, followed by furnace cooling. Impact deformation was applied in various ways: a) by hammer blows on an anvil, the specimen and anvil being immersed in liquid nitrogen ( —196°C), b) by driving a precooled center-punch into the sheet, and c) by bending around a crystallographically determined axis with a hammer blow. The impact-deformation produced bands and slip lines on the surface, Fig. 1. The bands have every appearance of being deformation twins, a) They are tilted with respect to the untwinned surface. b) They have the appearance of Neumann bands in iron, thin lens shape, some having serrated edges. c) The orientation in each is different from that of the surrounding matrix and uniform within a given band, see slip lines within them in Fig. 1. d) Upon repolishing and etching, the difference in orientation and the resemblance to Neumann bands is again evident, Fig. 2. (In this micrograph the slight bend in the bands as they cross grain boundaries was noted frequently and results from the high degree of preferred orientation in the sheet.) e) The bands persist after annealing treatments that would have removed them had they been a low-temperature martensitic phase, e.g., after an anneal of 1/2 hr at 900°C. When back-reflection Laue data were plotted for single-surface analysis of several grains, every trace of the bands in each grain could be explained by (112) planes. In addition, two of the bands were located in space by traces on two surfaces, and these also were found to lie on (112) planes within the error of the stereographic plot. Since (1 12) is the anticipated composition plane for deformation twins in body-centered-cubic metals it is felt that the observations listed above are conclusive evidence for the identification of the bands as twins. Similar tests with impact at —77° and at 25°C produced no twinning. It is concluded that the critical shear stress for slip at the rates of straining used was always low enough to prevent the applied stress from reaching the value required for twinning at these temperatures. It was noted that the serrations along the edges of the twin bands exhibited parallel crystal facets. Several similarly oriented notches are visible in Fig. 1, and a remarkable set is shown in Fig. 3. It appears from Fig. 1 and similar areas that notches are frequently associated with the intersection of a slip line with a twin, although not all such intersections are at notches. In some instances a slip line appears to enter the twin, cross it, reflect from the opposite side and recross it, producing a pattern resembling a notch but without producing the notch itself, see Fig. 1. It is suggested that the stress concentration at the end of a slip line is responsible for these details. Safety management, both personal and that associated with catastrophic hazard, helps to define the success of mining companies. Personal safety management, often categorised by slips, trips and falls, has been widely addressed, with numerous approaches successfully adopted. Catastrophic hazard can lead to a single accident (eg ground collapse, underground fires etc) causing multiple fatalities. Catastrophic hazard management in mining is an emerging discipline, and as such there are various pitfalls to demonstrate its effectiveness and success; it is much more than simply meeting regulatory requirements. Various standards, guidelines, and leading practices are available for reporting key performance indicators. While measuring and reporting safety related key performance indicators (KPIs) such as Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR), Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR), are important, they often lack detail, and give little insight into the effectiveness of catastrophic hazard management strategies and controls. Catastrophic hazards are low likelihood, high consequence events, and as such demand a different management approach. Companies cannot use the suite of personal safety metrics to help demonstrate management of catastrophic hazards. In-field verifications have revealed that senior management commitment to safety is often clear, well organised, and resourced. However, there are often some inconsistencies between what management promotes and plan, to what the operational teams understand and implement. Communication and clear understanding of expectations were the common themes identified to help empower supervisors to reinforce requirements of catastrophic hazard management. A lack of specific, measurable, and time-sensitive goals and objectives for the short- or medium-term, making it challenging to track progress was another key observation. Development of an integrated, multi-disciplinary auditing process executed by an experienced team of technical subject matter experts, provided an in-depth understanding of the requirements of catastrophic hazard management. Areas such as underground fire prevention, explosive storage, electrical safety, mobile vehicle interactions, ground control, inrush, and shafts and winders management have substantial overlap and intertwined processes, and similar strategies for emergency responses. Auditing of catastrophic hazards and safety management systems compliance is only the first step in safety assurance. Completing operational performance audits in technical areas and benchmarking the site verification of safety management documents and verifications forms a critical part to clearly demonstrate industry leading safety practices. No longer is it the external inspection or regular hazard management plan review requirements that dominate, but rather the culture of continual hazard identification, management, controls verification, underpinned by improvement and follow-up verifications of the corrective actions.

Geotechnical investigations have played a key role in influencing decisions for development of the Porgera Gold Project in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera is located 130 km west-northwest of Mt. Hagen in steep mountainous terrain with high rainfall. Much of the site is underlain by weak mudstone of the Chim Formation and creeping colluvial soils. Landsliding is common on the steeper slopes and in the valley floors. Structures have had to be sited to avoid areas susceptible to these movements. Early stage feasibility investigations included studies of tailings dam and waste rock dump sites, processing plant sites and hydroelectriic schemes. Further studies, leading into the design stage included the Enga Highway upgrading, water supply and power supply schemes. As construction for the project proceeds geotechnical input remains at a high level, with emphasis now on maintaining viable stable sites and refining data on which designs were based.

Since the organization of the Federal Bureau of Mines, part of the duties of the field men of the Safety Division has been to teach those connected with the minerals industries how to render the proper assistance to an injured worker between the time of the accident and the time when the injured receives medical attention--in other words, "first aid to the injured." For a number of years after the training was introduced, the response of mine officials and workers was very slow. Many times Bureau instructors devoted at least a week to training 5 to 15 or a few more men. However, in recent years since the companies and the Bureau of Mines have had an opportunity to study the results of first aid training, it has been found that in addition to taking care of an injured worker after an accident and thereby greatly reducing the severity rate, the tendency is for the majority of those who take the training to be more careful in their work, or to be more "safety conscious."

MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

The iron production has generated many tonnes of very fine residues with high concentration of iron. In addition, during the recycling of galvanised steel scrap in the steel making processes the zinc and lead are largely concentrated in the dust. These kinds of dusts are usually dumped beside the metallurgical plants and cause environmental problems. Therefore the metal recovery from the metallurgical residues has become a major interest not only from the viewpoint of metals recycling but mainly from the viewpoint of environmental land protection. The thermodynamic analyses and laboratory experiments suggested that the metals could be recovered from metallurgical wastes by reduction roasting and by plasma smelting processes. The iron rich pellets with very high metallization may be obtained from metallurgical wastes by the reduction roasting and the inert slag and pig iron could be produced by plasma smelting processes. In both cases the iron rich products are suitable for the steel production. During the reduction roasting or plasma smelting the high volatile zinc and lead metals were removed and enriched as a secondary dust, Zn-Pb concentrate, which is suitable for processing in zinc and lead smelters. Suggested processes are commercially feasible and environmentally friendly without any solid or liquid waste.

One of the lithium minerals most widespread in the earth&apos;s surface is spodumene (Li20-A1203-4Si02), a lithium aluminium silicate. For some time, deposits of this mineral were known to exist in the Black Hills of South Dakota, but it was only quite recently that Hess4/ pointed out the great magnitude of the low-grade deposits in forth Carolina. The theoretical lithia (Li20) content of spodumene is 9.04 percent. The only other minerals with such high lithia content are the phosphates, but these occur only in pockets and are not in extensive deposits5/. Actually, however, the lithia content in spodumene is never found to be this high, being nearly always below 7 percent for the pure mineral, and part of the lithia is apparently replaced by other alkalies.

Conveyor equipment beyond its prime chronically suffers from a lack of understanding in today&apos;s plant environment regularly delivers more material than original designers ever expected. A case in point is a belt conveyor in a major hard rock mine/milling operation asking to bring the unit up to current standards while eliminating spillage and reducing airborne dust. The challenge was to keep the system going by revamping the system while keeping the same footprint and allowing for higher production rate. Thirty years of daily maintenance and dust collection costs have virtually disappeared by the end of this challenging upgrade.

A brief address of welcome was delivered by the Alderman and responded to by President Hammond. The President then requested Dr. James Douglas to present to the honoured Secretary of the Institute, Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, an oil portrait.

IN THE present day manufacture of glass nearly pure quartz sands are used almost exclusively as the source of the silica, which is the major constituent of all common varieties of glass. Ordinary soda-lime, such as bottle, common tableware, plate, and window glasses, contain from 65 to 75 per cent. of silica. OCCURRENCE Glass sands occur in nature either in the form of loose, unconsolidated sediments or in deposits in which the individual grains have been more or less thoroughly bound together by some cementing agent so as to form sandstones. While deposits of sand and sandstones occur both widely and abundantly distributed, deposits that are sufficiently free from other constituents than quartz grains, so that they can be employed in the manufacture of the better grades of glass, are, comparatively speaking, of rare occurrence. The major portion of the glass sand produced in the United States comes from sandstones. In order to be suitable for glass sand, they should be rather friable. The rock should break down readily along the cementing material between the grains and should not break across the grains rather than along the bond. Some of the sandstones used are so friable that only light shots of slow-burning dynamite are necessary to disintegrate them sufficiently for hydraulic mining, while others have to be passed through crushers in order to disintegrate the rock into its individual grains.

Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers&apos; uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn&apos;t mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method. However, in comparing the paper with stress control studies conducted in other similar failing grounds, the stress control method appears to be able to solve the problem more effectively. Therefore it is advisable that the mine not give up its efforts to solve the problem. The “EE-Quarry” European project, supported by the European Commission (EE stands for Energy Efficient), develops a new and highly effective modelling and monitoring Energy Management System technique to improve Energy Efficiency and move to a low CO2 emission rate in the nonmetallic mineral industry.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

The symposium on production for the year 1943 contains few papers on the foreign situation. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. A noteworthy feature of the reports on Texas this year is the map on page 469, which shows the districts covered by the statistics. Excerpts from Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each place in the table may represent one of three possibilities; either the proper entry is determinable and can be supplied by the author, or an approximate figure can be supplied which is the author&apos;s best guess and should be entered followed by an x, or it does not apply to the particular field and the space is left blank. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determina-tion. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are suficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on &apos;&apos;Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone. The net thickness of the producing formation should be the thickness of the producing zone, less the estimated amount to cover the portions of the zone that do not yield oil, such as dense shales, etc. It is recognized that for some fields the authors can only make rough guesses; in such cases, they should enter their best estimate followed by an x. Average production per acre-foot need not be reported as it can be calculated by those interested from the figures given. In classifying wells as to producing methods, enter all wells that are not "flowing" in the column headed "Artificial Lift." If possible, add footnotes to indicate whether the lift is "pumping," "gas lift" or "air lift."

In order to secure good results in the prevention of accidents, it is generally recognized that the desire for such accomplishment, as well as the aggressive and constructive action to achieve it, must emanate from the Top Management and permeate successively down through the "Chart of Authority" to the workmen. Several years ago, with the above as a basis and with full support of the Top Management, the Mining Department started a program of selling the foremen and bosses the idea that safety could be achieved and that it was desired and required. Using psychology, persistence and numerous other methods, the foremen and bosses were finally impressed with the idea that "It can be done" and "It will be done." With this in mind, new ideas were brought forth by the foremen and bosses regarding the caving operation and the specific jobs in the operation. These new ideas were taken up in round-table discussions and resulted in certain changes in the undercutting method and the actual drawing of the blocks. These changes resulted in increasing fragmentation of the blocks which prevented the usual hang-up areas in the blocks. With the rock smaller in size and within reasonable reach from the tapping drifts, accidents were prevented in the tapping section. At the same time, an enforced campaign of housekeeping throughout the mine was undertaken with very beneficial results. The foremen and bosses then, in turn, educated and trained the workers themselves to become safely conscious. In so doing, a constant re- minder was given on all jobs assigned that the job was to be done safely as well as efficiently. No man is assigned a job who is not qualified for the type of work required. Efficiency and safety go hand in hand.
