THIRTY years ago, when I stood on the cliff of red fossil iron-ore, on Red mountain, Jefferson county, Ala., I asked what were the geological relations of this remarkable deposit. In reply I was told that it was a limestone colored and saturated by some unknown but wholly external influences, and that at a reasonable distance from the surface the color would disappear. I could find no satisfactory explanation either of the nature of this wonderful external permeating influence, or of the cause of such a ferrous impregnation selecting this one particular bed of limestone, to the exclusion of the higher and lower beds of the same material which are not even stained. I. THE PRESENT THEORY. Referring to this subject, Dana says:' "The clays, clayey sandstones and limestones of the Clinton epoch, through New York and the Appalachians, show that the mud-flats and sand-banks, and hence the shallow seas of the coast region, still continued. . . The beds of argillaceous iron-ore, which spread so widely through New York and some of the other States, south and west, could not have formed in an open sea, for clayey iron-deposits do not form under such circumstances. They are proof of extensive marshes, and, therefore, of land near the sea-level. The fragments of crinoids and shells found in these beds are evidence that they were, in part at least, salt-water marshes, and that the tides sometimes reached them." At first, this explanation seemed satisfactory, but the more I studied the ore the less satisfying the explanation became. 1. In considering slurry transportation for Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine in Northern West Virginia, many things were taken into account. The advantages of slurry transportation in comparison to shuttle car, belt and rail transport have been given in previous publications." These include increased safety and the potential for increased productivity. In addition to these considerations, the slurry transport system installed in an existing mine provides an alternate or additional transportation mode to the one already existing. In the Loveridge Mine, this is rail haulage. Since the rail system is a single track system and the distances involved are several kilometers, it is not always possible to provide for haulage of loaded cars, return of empties, supplies and maintenance in an efficient manner. Slurry transport of the coal from the production faces to the preparation plant allows the rail system to fulfill the remaining transportation needs in an efficient manner. Consol initiated development work in slurry transportation in the early fifties leading to the construction and operation of the 174-km (108-mile) Cadiz-to-Cleveland pipeline which carried 1,200,000 metric t/y (1,300,000 t/y) from 1957 to 1963. Development work on coarse coal slurry transportation for underground mines started in 1970 with feasibility tests on coarse coal at Conoco's Ponca City, Oklahoma, slurry test facility. A series of tests were conducted in several locations as development work proceeded on the various subsystems, mechanical equipment and controls required to produce a working system to follow a continuous miner in a room-and-pillar type mine, then to combine the coal production from several mine faces for mainline transportation to the preparation plant. The face system, including the crusher-pump vehicle, hose hauler vehicle, slurry booster pump units, return water unit and 900 to 1,200 m (3,000 to 4,000 feet) of pipeline was brought together for the first time and tested as a system at Consol's Robinson Run Mine in northern West Virginia in 1975. A pipeline wear test at the Loveridge Mine where 300,000 tonnes (330,000 tons) of minus 127-mm (5-inch) run-of-mine coal were pumped from the raw coal bin into the preparation plant and a large scale test in Ponca City on a multiple feed sump where several slurry flows could be combined to provide surge capacity and a constant reclaim rate for mainline transportation completed the preliminary testing for a complete system. A decision was made to commit the system to a mine, and the south half of the Loveridge Mine was chosen. This site required the transporting of coal from one longwall and two continuous miner development faces. To prevent startup and unexpected problems in the slurry system from shutting down production of coal from the longwall face, the rail car loading point from the main section belt was chosen as the feed point for the slurry system and the design would allow for rapidly switching from one transport mode to the other. Scheduling of required development entry work and the developmental nature of the system led to a decision to install only one continuous miner face slurry transport system rather than two for this first system. The type of continuous miner in use at the mine for the foreseeable future was the Joy 2BT6 twin boring machine. This machine cuts a stable, arch-shaped entry and was therefore allowed to mine about 26 m (85 feet) of entry before roof bolting was re¬quired. Since peak production from this type of machine was not high, a smaller transport system could be used with it.

"In the case of treating phosphatizing wastewater containing zinc, zinc had an impact on the solution chemistry, especially on pH. Fe2(SO4)3 and CaCl2 were used as precipitators to remove phosphate from zincic phosphatizing wastewater and the optimum pH was investigated. Zinc ion had a significant effect on the optimum pH. The optimum pH ranges were 12.10(inlet concentration of 15.67mg/L, outlet concentration of 9.53mg/L), 3.04-5.50(inlet concentration of 11.97mg/L, outlet concentration of 0.44-0.26mg/L), and more than 10.72(inlet concentration of 12.24mg/L, outlet concentration of less than 0.47mg/L) under the conditions without precipitator, with Fe2(SO4)3 and with CaCl2 respectively.Introduction Phosphate coating is commonly used for protective coating of machine elements. Including oil removal by caustic washing, rust removal by acid washing, phosphatization and inactivation, the phosphatization process produces wastewater containing inorganic salt of high concentration, especially the phosphate, beyond the environmental standards and polluting environment seriously. What’s more, the wastewater from zincic phosphatizing technology also contains another pollutant, zinc. At present, Chemical Precipitation (CP) and Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) are two of most common technologies of phosphate removal. BNR, such as A/O, A2/O and UCT technology, is suited for wastewater containing organ phosphorus of low concentration and CP for wastewater with phosphate of high concentration [1]. Researches on CP treating wastewater containing phosphate of high concentration, mainly focus on adding quantity of precipitators[2-5] and coagulants[2-4] and the choice of technologies[3-9]."

The recovery of copper by leaching from relatively low grade ores containing both oxidized and sulphide minerals is rapidly gaining in commercial importance. There is an economic limit below which certain ores can not be treated by concentration methods, and material with values below this limit must be discarded, possibly to be treated later, or the copper must be extracted by wet processes. Heap leaching has been carried out by the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Copper Queen Branch, for several years, and to-day its plant is a large producing unit. The Ohio Copper Coy at Bingham, Utah; has been leaching in place since 1919. Many other leaching operations are also being; carried out in various parts of the United States and in foreign countries. The plant at Rio Tinto, Spain, may be considered the father of heap leaching.

A new flotation system has been developed to improve the generally slow separating differentials of fine bubbles and fine particle suspensions. The new technology is based on established pneumatic flotation designs called Imhoflot which use intensive in-line pre-aeration to aerate the flotation pulp prior to its introduction to the separating cell. In the new system (see figure 1) this separation is speeded up dramatically by the introduction of centrifugal motivation in the separating vessel, without the use of internal moving parts. The design focuses on providing increased differential forces on buoyant mineralised bubbles and hydrophilic fines. The commercial benefit to industry is much reduced residence time, less than 30 seconds, which offers considerable cost savings in equipment and infrastructure.

Five full-scale horizontal loading tests of piles carried out by the LCPC in France are interpreted in order to analyse P-Y load-transfer curves. The experimental piles are either bored or jacked into quite homogenous sandy soils and instrumented by strain gauges for measuring bending moments along the pile. Successive differentiation and integration of bending moment profiles have led to derive respectively lateral soil reaction and displacements then to construct the load-transfer P-Y curves. The initial horizontal lateral reaction modulus was derived from these curves and shows linear variation with depth in accordance with Gibson soils profiles. P-Y curves are validated by back-computation of the pile on the basis de these curves and the horizontal reaction modulus was compared to the recommendations frequently used in pile design practice.

The bulk flotation behaviour of an industrial rougher bank has been determined with a view to characterising the size iepend ent behaviour of the identifiable nineral groups present. A relatively simple flotation model, based on first order kinetics and the assumption of perfect mixers in series ias been used to provide a fit to the operation of the cells. The adequacy of the model is discussed in relation to the characteristics of the ore and the size iependancy of the parameters. It is shown that improved fits are possible if the model accounts explicitly for this size dependancy and demonstrated how the model may be of use in prediction of the grade recovery relationships for different operating conditions as an aid to plant optimisation.

Chlorine-containing minerals are commonly present in coal. Associated minerals such as pyrite can undergo exothermic reactions. Consequently, it is of great significance to study the effect of inorganic chloride on the spontaneous combustion of coal. In this study, the effects of five inorganic chlorides (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and zinc chloride) on the spontaneous oxidation of coal were investigated. Analysis of the gaseous products of coal oxidization at low temperatures (323K to 453K) showed that the presence of inorganic chlorine in coal markedly decreases O2 consumption and the generation of CO and CO2. Samples of raw coal and chlorine-loaded coal were oxidized for 36 hours under the same experimental conditions. Infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results showed that inorganic chloride can inhibit the oxidative decomposition of some functional structure components (methyl, methylene, methine, and hydroxy) in the coal. The influence of inorganic chloride on the oxidation characteristics of the functional groups in coal during spontaneous combustion was investigated using benzyl alcohol and 1-phenylpropanol as model compounds, which were tested under the same experimental conditions as the coal samples. The oxygen consumption of model compounds with and without the addition of inorganic chloride further suggested that inorganic chloride may hinder the oxygenolysis of these structures during low-temperature oxidation. This phenomenon can be attributed to the radical reaction from the perspective of radical chemistry. It can therefore be concluded that inorganic chlorides play an inhibitory role in the spontaneous combustion of coal.

There are four main types of base metal and gold mineralisation recognised in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. These are stratiform, polymetallic veins, stockwork/concordant gold-quartz veins and unconformity related uranium-gold-platinoid mineralisation. The stratigraphy of the central Palaeoproterozoic Pine Creek Geosyncline has been simplified into three groups comprising the Batchelor, Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups in ascending order. Stratiform mineralisation occurs within the Frances Creek Group. The earliest mineralisation is found adjacent to circular faults ringing basement highs. Higher in the stratigraphy, stratiform mineralisation is often associated with zones of high compression in the vicinity of basement highs. A synsedimentary-diagenetic origin for stratiform mineralisation is proposed. Polymetallic vein mineralisation occurs within the Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. Its composition changes systematically through the stratigraphy similar to the stratiform mineralisation. The mineralisation is structurally controlled and usually occurs in the vicinity of basement highs. Stockwork-concordant gold-quartz vein mineralisation is hosted by the upper Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. It occurs within compressional zones and along the Pine Creek Structure corridor around, above and particularly between basement highs. Mineable reserves occur in thick continuous semi concordant quartz-sulphide veins and/or stockworks. Unconformity related uranium-gold-platinoid mineralisation shows a close spatial relationship with the Palaeoproterozoic/Mesoproterozoic unconformity. The mineralisation is localised by structures formed during Mesoproterozoic deposition and is commonly adjacent to Archaean basement or its remobilised equivalents. The type of mineralisation (stratifom/polymetallic vein) is a reflection of local stress regimes, structure and physio-chemical conditions. An initial phase of stratiform mineralisation is postulated to have occurred with the first significant marine transgression in a tensional regime. A second phase occurred later during a compressive regime. "Ihermochemical sulphate reduction of mineralising fluids by hydrocarbons is invoked as the precipitation mechanism for the polymetallic vein type of mineralisation. Hydrocarbon generation is postulated to have occurred within the Frances Creek Group, in many places contemporaneously with the movement of mineralising fluids and basin compression. Polymetallic veins formed from the interaction of mineralising fluids and hydrocarbons which were trapped in suitable structures. An abundant, continuing supply of hydrocarbons was necessary to form significant deposits. Where these conditions were not net, the mineralising fluids largely continued their ascent to the near surface environment to form stratiform deposits. The stockwork/concordant gold-quartz vein mineralisation is a later event and occurred during the relaxation of compressional defonnation after deposition of the 1-inniss River Group.

Comminution devices such as rod or ball mills are characteristically nonselective in their operation in that all material fed to a mill is ground to some extent. This is unfortunate when the object of comminution is liberation, for not only is energy expended in breaking pure gangue particles wasted, but, since gangue is frequently the predominant phase, the opportunity for such loss is great. Ideally, in this application a comminuting device should develop fracture only in locked particles. In the present investigation an attempt was made to use the large density difference which may exist between minerals to prevent comminution of one while grinding the other. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT The two minerals used in this work were -8-mesh galena and -8+ 20-mesh quartz. All tests were made on 2000-g charges containing 50 pct by weight of each mineral. Heavy media suspensions consisted of -100-mesh ferrosilicon in water. For grinding, a laboratory mill 10 in. diam by 12 in. long was filled to about 30 pct of its volume with either a ball or a rod charge. The balls ranged in size from 3/8 to 1 1/8 in. in diam; the rods ranged from 5/8 to 1 1/4 in. diam by 11 in. long. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In all tests employing heavy media, the ground pulps were treated as follows: 1) After recovering the ground charge from the mill but before drying, the pulp was wet screened on 200 mesh. 2) After drying the + 200-mesh product from step 1, the ferrosilicon was removed magnetically. 3) The nonmagnetic quartz and galena product from step 2 was sized on 10-mesh through 200-mesh screens. 4) The mineralogical composition of each screen fraction was determined by measuring its specific gravity. A process has been evaluated, on a continuous pilot plant scale, to treat refractory gold arsenopyrite/pyrite concentrates. The process consisted of biological leaching to partially oxidise sulphides, followed by pressure leaching for complete sulphide oxidation and arsenic precipitation, followed by liquor neutralisation and cyanidation of the autoclave residue for gold recovery. This paper provides a brief description of the treatment flowsheet and discusses some of the main parameters and results of the process. During integrated pilot plant campaigns, it was confirmed that acceptable sulphide oxidation and gold extraction of 96-98% could be achieved by a two-stage oxidation with BIOX® (4 days total retention time) followed by PDX (40 minutes retention time at 220°C). Only partial arsenic precipitation was achieved in the autoclave, followed by complete precipitation by neutralization under atmospheric conditions. The overall process could be significantly simplified, and capital and operating costs reduced, with a flowsheet modification allowing all of the BIOX® liquor to bypass the autoclave directly to the neutralization circuit.

The present contribution investigates the way of applying benchmarking for large-scale open-pit mining operations based on sustainability indicators proposed by numerous institutions or groups of experts. These indicators have been developed taking into consideration the legal and regulatory framework that are in force. However, their scope is not only to declare the mining company?s compliance with all legal requirements but also to represent its economic, environmental, and social performance. In this way, sustainability indicators allow assessment of a company?s capacity to produce commodities, to meet the environmental quality requirements and to contribute to a long-term economic, cultural and social development of the local communities.

I was delighted to be invited, and to accept the invitation, to welcome to this specialist meeting on an intriguing subject, the local participants and - most importantly - the international contributors. Technical o analysis of blast furnace operations has for many years formed the basis of intense research throughout the iron and steel industry, world wide, because the efficiency of blast furnace operation estab- lishes the foundation for all subsequent processes in a steel plant. So much depends on the constant, efficient performance of iron melting units in relation to costs, quality, regularity of operations and reli- able delivery performance to our customers.

Crushing has proven to be of fundamental importance in mine mill integration at Highland Valley Copper (HVC). Highland Valley Copper has achieved large throughput and good quality control through the gyratory crushers by proper blast design and better gap control. The next step, in optimizing the mine mill relationship, is evaluating the crusher liner wear and its shape influence on performance and product size reduction. To do this a laser measurement device has been developed and data is being recorded on the concave and mantle liner wear. This paper will outline the work to date and indicate specific objectives of the work.

The aspect of sustainability of ferroalloy processes has long been a serious matter for consideration in many of the world?s industrialized countries. A number of countries can be named where ferroalloy plants that were once flourishing, have all but disappeared. One of the most important factors playing a role in this type of occurrence is the cost and availability of quality raw materials. Given that all natural resources will be depleted with time, users are compelled to develop new processes that are sustainable in the changing environment. The DC arc smelting furnace is one such process that has proved itself, and has gained increasing popularity over the past two decades. This process, amongst other benefits, directly addresses the use of more readily available and more affordable raw materials in ferroalloy production. Since early in the new millennium, GLPS has been involved in various studies for different clients of furnaces for the production of ferroalloys. Two of these recent studies have culminated in the design, construction and commissioning of DC arc furnaces for the production of ferrochrome. One of these furnaces is a 10 MW unit at Mogale Alloys, and the other a 60 MW unit at the Middelburg plant of Samancor Chrome. This paper discusses the approach taken in the design and construction of these two furnaces, which, although varying significantly in size and capacity, are very similar in many other aspects of their design. Networks of monitoring wells were established prior to mining at four longwall mine sites in the Appalachians to monitor the effect of mining on water levels, water quality and well yield. Two of the sites were located in stream valleys and the other two sites were located on hilltops. The depth to the mined seam ranged from 500-850 feet with the deeper cover being associated with the hilltop sites. Maximum declines in groundwater levels during and after mining were an order of magnitude less in the stream valley aquifers than in the hilltop aquifers. However, water levels in hilltop wells located outside the area immediately above the panel were unaffected. Water quality changes in wells as a result of longwall mining were negligible at all four sites. Increases in aquifer transmissivity and well yield were much more pronounced in the stream valley aquifers than in the hilltop aquifers. The significantly larger recharge area for the stream valley aquifers than that for the hilltop aquifers may partially account for the differing responses of these two classes of aquifers to longwall mining. These observations appear to be consistent with the stress-relief fracture model for Appalachian Plateau groundwater hydrology proposed by Wyrick and Borchers in 1981.

Despite the recognised importance of tailings management, there remain little data on the potential benefits of biological treatments compared with physical and chemical treatments. The operation of the majority of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continues to employ mainly physical solutions, such as sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition, with increasing adoption of thickening, paste and filtration to dewater the tailings involving the addition of chemicals such as flocculants and coagulants. However, with tailings production continuing to escalate rapidly due to the increasing demand for commodities and reducing ore grades, available technologies have not demonstrated cost-effective performance at high tailings production rates. This paper examines the emerging role of bacteria to better manage tailings, reducing risks and optimising storage capacity. Bacteria have the potential to enhance tailings dewatering, maintain their permeability, delay the onset of desiccation cracking, and improve their shear strength. Bacteria-treated tailings may be suitable for use as construction materials. Bacteria also have potential in limiting the dusting of tailings and facilitating rehabilitation on closure. The paper describes a series of laboratory involving the addition of harmless bacteria to a range of tailings. The bacteria form a compact material called calcite (a common and stable form of calcium carbonate), which immobilises the tailings particles, releases water, and cements the tailings in a stable and natural matrix. The water released can be recovered or evaporated, depending on site objectives. The bacterial reactions are linked to physical and chemical processes, providing the potential for an optimal mix of technologies for particular tailings and site conditions.CITATION:Cifuentes, H and Williams, D J, 2018. Devido a sua alta demanda de produção e padrão de qualidade a indústria automotiva tem utilizado ao longo da história robôs nas mais diversas atividades como montagem, soldagem, pintura e inspeção. No intuito de levar esta realidade para a sala de aula de alunos de Engenharia Mecânica, foi desenvolvido um braço robótico didático, apresentando configuração semelhante à um modelo industrial, a ser utilizado como ferramenta de apoio ao ensino de robótica e outras disciplinas correlacionadas. Para isto, fez-se o uso associado da placa eletrônica Arduino e do software Matlab. Inicialmente foram obtidas as equações de cinemática direta e inversa. Os resultados mostraram que a posição teórica obtida apresentou um comportamento esperado conforme a metodologia adotada e o resultado experimental mostrou pequena variação de posição. Para a cinemática inversa, o tempo de resolução do conjunto de equações foi comparado à resolução do problema através de um método numérico. Com base nos resultados experimentais, foram feitas algumas sugestões de melhoria para o braço robótico didático e considerações relacionadas a acurácia de um robô industrial.
