It is shown that the cellular substructure observed in binary alloy crystals grown from a melt of known concentration can be eliminated by the proper choice of growth conditions. For a given solute concentration, there exists a critical ratio of temperature gradient G in the melt to the rate of solidification R of the crystal, i.e., of G/R, which must be exceeded before the cellular structure can be eliminated. A secondary substructure is observed which is related to the cellular substructure. IN crystals grown from the melt, a prismatic substructure has been observed by Buerger,1 Pond and Kessler,2 and Rutter and Chalmers." This structure is columnar in the direction of growth and appears as a network of hexagonal cells in the plane of the solid-liquid interface. Rutter and Chalmers3 have shown that this substructure occurs as a result of the presence of a layer of high impurity concentration in the melt adjacent to the solid-liquid interface. The formation of the substructure is accompanied by a redistribution of this impurity in the neighborhood of the interface. The structure can be controlled by proper adjustment of the variables in the solidification process such as a rate of solidification and the temperature gradient in the liquid. "In the cement deep mixing (CDM) method, one approach to joint construction is creating a surface-contact joint. In this study, an unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression test was performed on cement-treated soil specimens with joints artificially created by successive pouring. The effects of the presence or absence of such successive pouring joints on the strength of the specimens were then examined. The results showed that the compressive strength of the specimen decreased by approximately 0%–30% with a successive pouring joint.INTRODUCTIONIn the block type and wall type improvement patterns of the CDM(Cement Deep Mixing Method) application, an integrated body of soil-cement columns is constructed by partially overlapping individual treated soil columns. The overlapping operation should be implemented before the hardening of soils by cement progresses and thus, this operation is routinely performed in construction sites usually within 24 hours or within 48 hours at a maximum. However, when the operation is forced to be interrupted on account of a typhoon or any other adverse weather conditions, it is impossible to carry out the overlapping operation within the above time limitations. In such a case, it is necessary to improve the integrity between the treated soil columns solidified first and the treated soil columns to be constructed later.One of the methods that can be adopted is to prior agitate the target area by mixing blades “without cement”, integrating the preceding treated soil columns and the subsequently treated soil columns at construction joints. This method has been adopted so far in numerous sites because no additional materials or equipment are necessary. However, its effectiveness has scarcely been evaluated quantitatively in conventional studies.In the circumstances, the authors investigated in the present research the effect of the presence or absence of construction joints on the specimen strength by performing unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests using specimens of cement treated soil artificially provided with surface-abutting construction joints.Therefore, this study examined the effects of the presence or absence of artificially created successive pouring joints on the strength of cement-treated soil specimens through an unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression test."

If any portion of a concrete structure is required to remain in its original form and retain its structural integrity, the use of explosives is usually forbidden and the portion to be dismantled is demolished by mechanical means, using various techniques and equipment that are tedious and expensive.

The major development in stabilization of the oil industry during 1933 was the transition in the United States from state control to federal control in many of the functions that government is presumed to exercise. A brief review of the influences leading to that transition is given here to suggest its significance and to assist in forecasting its further development. Bitumens were known to the ancients and have been applied to minor uses since earliest historic times, but it was not until after the discovery of oil in considerable quantities near Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859 that it was made the basis of extensive commercial undertakings. In 1859 little was known about the origin of oil and gas, the nature of these deposits, and the physical laws that controlled their accumulation. Scientists soon began to study them, but 50 years or more of active oil-field development had elapsed before sufficient geological information had been accumulated to point the way toward efficient recovery of these products. In fact, only within the past five years has the function of reservoir energy become widely understood, yet it is a primary factor in oil recovery. discovery near Titusville, this infant industry has developed into an industrial giant. In complete ignorance of their destructive effect, wasteful development methods were initiated in Oil Creek and these became industrial habits. These habits in turn became oil and gas law. Under that law vast sums of money have been expended, rights have become vested and development methods fastened on a great industry that not only bring upon it periodic demoralization but cause ruthless destruction of the nation's reserves of these important natural resources. This is occurring in the midst of a petroleum era when oil is essential to the nation's security, its industrial supremacy, and the personal convenience of every citizen. Its conservation, therefore, has become a question of grave national concern. INTRODUCTION With the world media full of predictions that the price of gold will quadruple in three years (Maybury, R.J., 1988), and with financial forecasters and strategists touting opportunities to make 400% in gold (Skousen, M., 1988), explorationists and entrepreneurs are scurrying to find enough gold to feed the global gold fever created. At the same time, gold deposits in the United States and other developed and intermediate countries are becoming less attractive because of environmental restrictions, radical reductions in tax incentives, and depleting reserves, causing people in the mining industry to begin looking at opportunities for foreign investment in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs). Meanwhile, LDCs are responding with chamber-of-commerce aplomb in marketing their opportunities. In the face of all this frenzy and hype, targeting gold mining concessions in LDCs for foreign investment may be done more objectively by employing a systematic approach. For this paper the SHOP rating system (Corbin, R.K., 1987), which considers factors of the LDC's stability, hospitability, ore occurrence, and profitability potential is used. The result is that a tiny banana-growing republic in Central America, first discovered by Columbus and named the "Rich Coast'' because of the many gold adornments worn by its Indians, has been rediscovered and emerges as a classic LDC gold target.

This paper is an engineering case study of a blast performed on a highly weathered sandstone isthmus in an area sensitive to vibration and airblast, the challenges associated with such a blast, the methods used to understand rock characteristics, the blast design considerations and a discussion of the blast results. The purpose of the blast was to remove approximately 12 feet (3.7 m) of surface material in order to install a pumping station. The isthmus provided several challenges due to the weathering of the rock and multiple open faces with surrounding water. The highly fractured and weathered rock was subject to about ten years of freeze thaw cycles, influx of water and seasonal submersion. As such, all actual rock conditions were indefinite, including fracturing, rock properties, degradation and competency. The isthmus also had immediate neighbors who were unused to the environmental effects of blasting. To help continue to keep the social license to operate in the area, it was important to reduce the ground vibration, blast duration, dust and airblast. These factors required a better understanding of how the rock would respond to blasting. In order to do this, test blasts were performed on the same geologic formation in a different location of the quarry that was less sensitive to vibration and airblast effects, allowing the blast parameters and design to be verified and refined. The test blasts were performed while monitoring vibration, air blast, material movement and overall shot performance, and the blasting parameters were adjusted accordingly. The isthmus blast was performed based on the final design from these test blasts. The drilling and loading of the shot all met acceptable criteria and were comparable to the test blasts. The blast performance, however, was not as expected; the depth impacted by the blast was substantially more than expected. Since the test blasts were performed in the same formation, but in material that was significantly less weathered than the isthmus, the actual effect of this weathering was the only difference between test blasting and the isthmus blast. Thus, these results can be used for future reference to highlight the effects of blasting such highly weathered rock and help instruct the blast design in similarly complex conditions.

Coal mining has an impact on the water management of the water scarce Upper Olifants River Catchment. A prefeasibility study was carried out by Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited to establish the water supply and demand in the catchment. A geohydrological model was used for the coalfields to determine the stored water and excess water available. Two distinct collective and treatment systems were proposed for the Witbank and Middelburg municipalities to treat excess water from the Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited. The Emalahleni Water Reclamation Project for Witbank was initiated first. Water management and treatment experience gained at Anglo Coal was the cornerstone to develop the collection, treatment and distribution system. A full enquiry was issued to Keyplan, Veolia, Bateman Africa and IST Technik to construct, commission, operate and maintain a 20 ML/day desalination plant to treat acidic, saline mine waters to a South African National Standard (SANS) 0241 Class 0 potable water. After the technical and financial adjudication, Keyplan were awarded the contract. An integrated regulatory process was adopted through consultation with all the relevant regional and head office staff of the Department of Minerals and Energy, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the Mpumalanga Department of Land Affairs via an authorityÆs steering committee. A rock engineering evaluation was done to select both the plant and waste disposal sites as all possible sites are undermined. Various contracts are required with the individual mines for water supply, the Emalahleni Local Municipality for the delivery of potable water and for the disposal of wastes.

Mining is a risky business. The cost of exploring for new mineral deposits is high and the success rate of finding one worthy of development is relatively low. And once a deposit is identified, there is no guarantee that it will become a mine. Mining companies have to spend a lot of time and money on due diligence, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and sustainable development and environmental issues before deciding whether the deposit will become a profitable mine. And then there are the millions of dollars spent in developing the deposit and building a mine. No wonder the mining industry has trouble attracting investment capital. Companies take a large risk in developing reserves and investors take a similar risk in investing in them. So mining companies must be as accurate as possible in determining mineralization that makes it to reserve status. After all, reserves are a company’s most important asset and one of the critical factors analysts and funding sources look at when determining if a mine or mining company is worth the risk.

A fabricação de componentes de aços para a indústria mecânica, como por exemplo, indústria petrolífera, requer um rigoroso controle de qualidade através de técnicas de ensaios destrutivos e não destrutivos com o objetivo de caracterizar os aços quanto suas microestrutura/propriedades mecânicas e sua integridade estrutural e dimensional. Neste estudo foram utilizados dois aços C-Mn empregados na fabricação de tubos para extração e condução de óleo e gás. Foi realizada análise microestrutural utilizando microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Dureza foi realizada em amostras de diferentes microestruturas, tais como estado como temperado e como temperado e revenido em diferentes temperaturas. Medidas de velocidades ultrassônicas usando ondas longitudinais foram realizadas em todas as amostras. Observou-se uma significativa influência da microestrutura na velocidade de ondas ultrassônicas, principalmente para o aço que contem médio teor de carbono, enquanto que para o aço baixo carbono, a variação da velocidade ultrassônica foi insignificante para os diferentes tratamentos térmicos. A velocidade de onda ultrassônica na martensita foi inferior quando comparada com a martensita revenida. De maneira análoga, quanto maior a temperatura de revenimento, menor a dureza e maior a velocidade ultrassônica.

The transformation of eutectoid beryllium bronze has been quantitatively investigated at 550° and 592°C, the temperature region where the products of p decomposition are a fine lamellar eutectoid and a coarse lamellar aggregate which replaces the fine eutectoid with prolonged annealing. Metallographic evidence indicates that the coarse lamellar aggregate forms preferentially in the most densely lamellated regions of the fine eutectoid and favors the hypothesis that the development of the coarse lamellar aggregate in the fine eutectoid is due to the occurence of a cellular segregation reaction. WHEN eutectoid beryllium bronze (Cu-94 pct, Be-6 pct) is isothermally transformed at high temperatures in the and y region after quenching from the fl field, the principal initial decomposition process is G one of growth of approximately spherical nodules composed of a number of lamellar colonies of the a and y phases. After the initial reaction has proceeded substantially or completely, depending on the transformation temperature, a second reaction occurs wherein the fine lamellar eutectoid is replaced by a coarser lamellar aggregate composed of the same oand yphases.' This reaction is not simply a spheroidization of the initial fine eutectoid but the nucleation and growth of a coarser, structurally different, and more stable distribution of the @and yphases. Fig. 1 illustrates the replacement of the initial fine lamellar structure by a coarse lamellar aggregate. The a phase is the dark mottled constituent; the light constituent the y phase. The phase diagram for the copper-rich end of the Cu-Be system2 is shown in Fig. 2. The a phase has the face-centered cubic structure characteristic of copper-rich solid solutions. The B phase is a disordered body-centered cubic structure, while the y phase is body-centered cubic, ordered (CsC1, B2 type). A. viswanathanS investigating Debye patterns of Cu-6 pct Be discovered that a transitory phase appeared on very rapid quenching from the /3 region which was absent when the quenching velocity was moderate. The phase could be assigned a body-centtred cubic structure with a lattice parameter of 2.876. Tempering at 100°C for 2 hr after quenching resulted in complete disappearance of the phase. The work of Fillnow and Mack' is the only previously published study of the isothermal transformation of eutectoid beryllium bronze. Their study elucidated the nature of decomposition at various subcritical temperatures in an exploratory fashion. The purpose of the research reported in this paper was principally to obtain quantitative information on the isothermal decomposition of the fl phase and to clarify the relationships existing between the fine lamellar eutectoid and the coarse lamellar aggregate. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was an almost eutectoid Cu-Be alloy bar furnished by D.J. Mack. The alloy had been melted under a protective carbon cover and centrigugally cast into a graphite mold preheated to 490 "C. Segregation was minimized by violent agitation during melting and pouring. The analysis of the casting was 93.85 pct Cu, 5.60 pet Be with traces of Si, Mg, Mn, Co, and Al. To determine the minimum soaking time necessary to insure specimen homogeneity, a number of specimens were held in the P region at 788OC for times fron 1 min to 12 hr and isothermally transformed at 550°C. Ok Tedi Mine is a high production open pit porphyry copper mine located high in the Star mountains of Papua New Guinea. The mine produces an average of 160 000 tonnes of ore and waste daily at a 1:1 strip ratio. Full scale drilling and blasting began in 1988, prior to which time all material was ripped and dozed.Drilling and blasting procedures at Ok Tedi underwent a major review commencing mid-1989. As a result of a mutual commitment by management at Ok Tedi and the mines explosives supplier ICI, significant reductions in overall blasting costs have been realised. These cost savings are primarily the result of the introduction of air bags, expanded patterns and better field execution.

The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

In late 1989, LAC Minerals purchased 65% of Bond International Gold and as a result became controlling shareholder of the El Indio Mine through Bond and San Jose. El Indio is a world class, complex sulphide gold deposit located in the hydrothermal alteration belt of the Andes mountains in the 4th Region of Chile. The mine is located in the high Andes about 185 km east of La Serena at an elevation of 4000 meters. The 1450 workers at El Indio live in the mine camp at 3200 m and on days off are bussed to La Serena. The El Indio mine was started in 1979 by St. Joe Minerals Corp., bought by Bond in 1987 and subsequently by LAC in 1989. The mine has produced 2.7 million oz. of gold, 9. 5 million oz. of silver and 170,000 t of copper since start of operation. The mill is currently operating at a rate of 2850 t/d and producing a copper/gold concentrate which is roasted to produce a copper/gold calcine and high quality, saleable crude As203• A small proportion of the precious metals are also produced as bullion from the leach circuit. Total production during 1989 was 224,197 ounces of gold, 1,309,342 ounces of silver and 26,968 tonnes of copper. The average cash cost of production for the period was U.S. $96 per ounce of gold, net of by-product credits. The average realized price was $5.30 per ounce of silver and $1.14 per pound of copper.

An experimental investigation was carried out to determine the various gas flow characteristics of bituminous coal samples. Adsorption and desorption tests were first conducted to estimate the quantity of methane that is retained by coal, and the rate at which it is released. Experiments were then carried out to study the variation in coal permeability with changes in applied stress and gas pressure - factors that change continuously with time. To further understand the phenomena involved in retention, release, and flow of gas, electron microscopy was used to study the microstructure of coal and how it affects these characteristics of coal.

F. D. Richardson—The authors are to be congratulated on this further contribution to our knowledge of the thermodynamics of the interaction between sulphur and carbon and silicon in liquid iron. As the authors state, the influence of carbon and silicon on the activity coefficient of sulphur in liquid iron is clearly of great importance in the blast furnace, since it must cause a three to fourfold improvement in the partition of sulphur between slag and metal. The influence of increasing temperature in further increasing the activity coefficient of the sulphur in the metal in the blast furnace by increasing the carbon content is also of interest. This effect, however, is probably only part of the reason for the general observation in blast furnace practice, that the sulphur content of the metal is lowered by increasing temperature. Other contributing factors are the lowering of the oxygen potential in the presence of carbon by increasing temperature and the probable increase in the activity coefficient of the lime in the slag for the same reason. The former of these effects, which works via the (CaO) + [S] = (CaS) + [O] equilibrium, might possibly account for a 70 pct improvement in the sulphur partition and the latter might give a further 50 pct improvement. C. Sherman—I would like to compliment the authors on their very careful research. If I may, I would like to show results of calculations on the carbon-sulphur-iron system similar to the ones that were shown in our paper for the silicon-sulphur-iron system. For Fe-S-C ternary system k=PHgs/PH2 x 1/(f1°) (f2°) (%S) where fs = sulphur activity coefficient fs' = fs for Fe-S system of equal pct S f3° = f2/f2 for Fe-S-C ternary system This same analysis has been used on other systems, but the results shown in fie.- 7 are for carbon and silicon. L. S. Darken—I would like to make two brief comments in addition to complimenting the authors on an apparently very precise and accurate investigation. The first is that the present work is in agreement with a calculation by Larsen and myself." Our calculation (much less precise than the present work) was based on: (1) Unpublished work on the sulphur content of molten iron (1.5 pct at 1500°C) in equilibrium with graphite and an iron sulphide slag; (2) the distribution coefficient of sulphur between slag and carbon-free liquid iron. We expressed the result in a form equivalent to log 7. = 0.18 [%C] which gives an activity coefficient (?s.) of sulphur only slightly higher than the authors find and certainly within the precision of the earlier work. My second comment concerns the correlation of the thermodynamic findings with atomistics. A rough pic- ture of the atomic arrangement in the liquid solution is rather easily conceived for this particular liquid solution containing iron, carbon, and sulphur. Carbon has a very much stronger affinity for iron than for sulphur. Hence we may conclude that a sulphur atom will but seldom be adjacent to a carbon atom—since this would be a position of high energy. From the metallic radii of iron and carbon we know that six iron atoms pack neatly around one carbon atom. Thus each carbon atom in retaining this shell of iron atoms (which latter may not be replaced by sulphur on account of the high energy requirement) decreases the available positions for each sulphur atom by six. Hence each atomic percent of carbon decreases the equilibrium sulphur content by 6 pct (of itself). Or, at low concentration each atomic percent of carbon increases the activity coefficient of sulphur by 6 pct. This is in good agreement with the observed increase (6 or 7 pct at low carbon content). It is indeed gratifying to find a case where, by such simple reasoning, quantitative agreement is found between precise data and the modern picture of the atomistics of the metallic state. J. P. Morris (authors' reply)—We would like to point out that there is an error in the equation on p. 322 of the paper. The third equation should read: ½S2 (gas) + H2 (gas) = H2S (gas) The authors wish to thank everyone for the interest they have shown in the paper. In regard to the general observation in blast furnace practice, that the sulphur content of the metal is lowered by increasing the temperature, Dr. Richardson is correct in stating that the cause can be attributed only in part to the increase in activity coefficient of sulphur resulting from the rise in carbon plus silicon content of the metal with rise in temperature. However, this factor is probably an important one. The results of one experiment, performed since this report was written, indicate that at a constant temperature the addition of silicon to a melt saturated with carbon causes an increase in the activity coefficient of sulphur even though the carbon solubility is lowered. In this test, 2.5 pct silicon was added to a melt saturated with carbon and maintained at 1400°C. Although the carbon content dropped from 4.85 to 4.1 pct, the activity coefficient of sulphur was increased by about 20 pct.

The dissolution of mercury during gold cyanidation is the cause of many environmental, health and processing problems. A study was undertaken to find a suitable reagent for the removal of mercury bearing complexes from the leach liquor. Removal of mercury from synthetic solutions and process water from a gold mine was investigated using sodium sulfide, sodium and potassium dimethyl dithiocarbamates as precipitating reagents. The results have shown that efficient mercury removal could be achieved by addition of potassium dimethyl dithiocarbamate (KDTC), by formation of stable mercury compounds. The resultant mercury-potassium dimethyl dithiocarbamate precipitates are stable under present plant operating conditions and do not have any deleterious effect on gold adsorption by activated carbon. Furthermore, it is also possible to stabilize the mercury in the heap during cyanidation by adding dimethyl dithiocarbomate.

The oxygen blast furnace is a new technology for ironmaking, where the oxygen and CO2-stripped blast furnace top gas are blown into the blast furnace replacing the conventional hot air. The oxygen blast furnace could reduce the consumption of coke and emission of carbon dioxide. In this chapter, a three-dimensional numerical model was developed to simulate the lance-blowpipetuyere-raceway region of a blast furnace, and the flow and combustion behaviors of coal particles were investigated based on an oxygen blast furnace. Compared with the traditional blast furnace, the combustion characteristics in the raceway of the oxygen blast furnace were different. In addition to the combustion of coal and coke, the combustion of large amounts of reducing gas was included. The coal combustion of different oxygen content (70, 80, 90, 100%) were investigated. The simulation results indicated that the coal burnout was only 21.64% at an oxygen content of 70%, a decrease of 51.52%, compared with a traditional blast furnace. The coal burnout was increased with the increase of oxygen content. When the oxygen content is 100%, the coal burnout was 90.38%, an increase of 17.22%.

"In early 2015 the Seed Waveform method was used to measure the Geologic response of the MesabiIron Formation to explosives energy input. This single charge wave form was then used to design acritical first blast at a newly developed Taconite mine. This initial blast had several irregular restrictions on design and performance. It had a very unusual “Frying Pan” shape, the regulatory agency required that no fly rock land in State owned waters less than 200 feet (61 m) away, there was no open face to blast to. Design criteria included the need to detonate the blast with two sinking cuts, and have the sinking cuts meet through a narrow neck between the cuts. All these had to be met using a 16 inch (406mm) diameter hole."

The Smelting and Converting El Teniente Process for copper concentrates as well as Slag Cleaning Furnace Technologies to treat slags coming out from the El Teniente Furnaces are widely applied today in Chile and around the world. Several industrial applications of this process have shown their capability to treat copper concentrates in a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Main operational parameters determining performance of the process are: oxygen enriched air flow rate, degree of oxygen enrichment, moisture content of the solid materials processed, molten material levels inside the vessel, frequency of molten materials tapping, bath temperature and copper losses in slags. In this work, the copper losses in the slags from El Teniente pyrometallurgical process are predicted by calculation from thermodynamic data and compared with those determined by microscopic examination and slag industrial data. Results obtained show that the main part of copper losses in the slag from El Teniente Furnace are mechanically entrapped or floated unsettled droplets of the coexisting matte phase. by the contrary the very low copper losses in the slag from slag cleaning furnace are limited by the physico-chemical form.
