IN THIS paper, as in so many other discussions of historical nature, there is little chance for original material and much has had to be rewritten from older papers, documents, accounts, reports, and the like, some of which are of doubtful authorship or contain conflicting statistics. Fully aware of these little historical pitfalls, the authors have tried to quote the origin where possible, and also to seek further confirmation when the statement warranted it, but cannot assume responsibility for certain facts and dates. The Encyclopedia Britannica was frequently consulted. The Calsinter process for recovery from fly ash involves sintering the fly ash with calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate at 1200°C, followed by a dilute sulfuric acid leach step. Flue gas desulfurization sludge containing calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, and unreacted calcium carbonate may be substituted for the calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate. Conversion of aluminum in fly ash by the sintering process to an acid-leachable species was measured as a function of sintering time and temperature in the range of 800°-1200°C The sinter-leach steps were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. SEM photographs indicated that the glassy spheroids in the original fly ash were converted to a crystalline structure by the sintering reaction.

During the next 15 years, US coal production is expected to double, with the increased production evenly divided between the East and the West. Along with greater production, coal export markets should increase dramatically from East, West, and Gulf Coast ports. The annual overseas export capacity of US coal-loading terminals is expected to rise from 147.1 Mt (162.1 million st) in 1981 to a minimum of 278.1 Mt (306.6 million st) in 1985, according to the US Maritime Administration. Increased coal production and use will lead to more development of import and export terminals, a vital link in the coal transportation chain. With continually escalating capital costs and the competitive markets that the terminals will serve, a well designed and efficient terminal is necessary. This article begins a two-part series that presents concepts presently used in coal export terminal design. Part I looks at site selection factors and equipment needs, while Part II will examine environmental considerations in building a terminal as well as typical capital and operating costs. The world is nearing the end of the oil era. In a few years oil will not be available to sustain the growth rate and increasing standard of living we have known in our lifetime. The big question is what energy era are we moving into? With the decline of readily available oil reserves and rapidly increasing prices, many countries are trying to switch to alternate energy forms. While intensive efforts to find new oil reserves continue, alternate energy sources such as natural gas, coal, synthetic fuels, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power are being developed. Recent indications are that coal is expected to bridge the energy gap over the next 25-30 years until the technology and economics of the alternate energy forms reach satisfactory levels. Use of coal for energy is receiving strong attention due to its long-term availability (200-300 years minimum), relative ease of development, and its low cost per unit of power produced. By the year 2000, it is expected that 25% of world energy supply will be met by direct coal combustion and possibly another 5-10% by synthetic fuel from coal. Coal's expanding share in the world energy market, along with an increase in coking coal requirements, will result in a large increase in the world's seaborne coal trade. Recent statistics and projections for the future are shown in Table 1. This phenomenal development rate includes increases in both coking and thermal coal requirements. Because of the rapid increase of seaborne coal trade during the last 10 years and the even greater projected increase of trade to 2000, various sectors of the coal industry are faced with enormous technical challenges and huge investments in equipment, land, transportation systems, and port facilities. Very large bulk terminals are under development throughout the world. Latest surveys indicate that there are about 30 new coal export and import terminals under consideration and at least 30 existing terminals have expansion programs planned or underway. With the high cost of borrowed capital and rapid inflation rates there is great emphasis on new planning and design techniques to minimize capital and operating costs of coal transportation systems. Terminals A total coal supply system can be considered to consist of one or more mines; a train, barge, truck, or other haulage system; an export terminal; a fleet of bulk carriers; a receiving terminal; and possibly, local inland distribution networks that include barges and railways. Terminals, though only a small link in the total transportation system, play a key role in overall system efficiency. At ports or inland distribution centers, terminals act as transportation links bringing trains, ships, barges, or trucks together for cargo transfer and temporary storage. A well-designed terminal can provide maximum independence between two modes of transportation and optimum freedom for intermodal interference. A terminal acts as a buffer between the two transportation modes by providing sufficient storage capacity so a ship need not wait for its cargo on, for example, a train-by-train basis, but can load immediately from the ready stock. Similarly, a train need not wait for a ship to unload its contents but can dump immediately into storage. Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, located in a semi-arid climate in Arizona, continually struggles with a water problem. This applies to quality as well as quantity. When the EPA considered installing a new centralized sewage plant to handle the combined waste from the municipalities of Globe and Miami, Arizona, they automatically assumed that He could use the sewage effluent for process water in flotation. The treatment plant was to be a tertiary system producing 1600 gpm of sewage effluent. Inspiration decided that this could possibly be a source of additional process water. It was decided to test sewage effluent from Miami Treatment Plant at the rate of 400 gpm since it was only a primary treatment plant. The 400 gpm was combined with the 5000 gpm of process water going to the Concentrator. After one week the results were disastrous. The recovery and final grade had each dropped approximately 5%. With the results from this brief run, it was concluded that sewage effluent from a primary treatment plant could not be used. Research was then brought into the problem to begin an evaluation of sewage effluent in flotation.

Some rock mechanics theorists believe that if a hydraulically placed backfill can be introduced in a stoped out area, which will minimize wall closure by taking high stresses across the fill with minimum compaction, then heavy ground and rock burst phenomena will be minimized. The paper will discuss a large scale laboratory project when fill strength was increased over four times by the head vibrated method and up to well over 20 times by the double placed, cemented, vibrated head method when compared to conventionally placed fills. The only preconditioning of the 60% solids by weight slurry was the addition of cement in some tests.

THE upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead area was the first major lead-producing section in the United States. The lead ore, found near the surface in crevices, was relatively pure galena that could be smelted directly into lead, at first in log hearth furnaces and later in more efficient blast type furnaces. French Canadian fur traders encouraged the Indians to mine the lead ore and showed them how to smelt it into lead that had a high value for bullets1 Nicholas Perrot found lead ore on the Mississippi River bluffs near the junction of Wisconsin and Illinois and in 1690 established a trading post on the Wisconsin side of the river opposite the present site of Dubuque, Iowa.2 Shortly after 1720 discovery of Mine La Mott in Missouri diverted considerable attention from the Upper Mississippi area. Mining continued on a desultory basis with operations concentrated in the Galena, Illinois-Dubuque, area. In 1740 at least 20 miners were at work in the Fever River area around Galena and are reported to have shipped 2500 70-lb pigs of lead to Kaskaskia in 1741." Julien Dubuque established a mining and smelting operation in 1790 near the city that bears his name and was granted sole right to exploit the mining operations on the lands of the Sauk and the Fox Indians. He is reported to have produced 30,000 70-lb pigs of lead in 1805. Following the death of Dubuque in 1810 the Indians refused to let the white miners enter their lands, and little was done on the Iowa side of the river until the Indians were removed by treaty with the United States government in 1832." Early mining was entirely for lead but as the crevices were followed down, increasing percentages of zinc sulphide and zinc carbonate were encountered and at first discarded. Later a market became available for the zinc ores, and hand jigging devices were made to separate the lead, the zinc, and the rock or waste materials. The first record of zinc production from the area is for 1860. Production of zinc passed that of lead before 1900, reached a peak of 64,000 short tons in 1917, fell off rapidly and continually to about 2000 short tons in 1938, and since 1940 has ranged from 11,000 to 19,000 short tons. Lead has been of considerably less importance since 1900, and at present only about 10 pct as much lead as zinc is produced. Practically all of the zinc ore has come from orebodies that are rather flat and wide with considerable length as compared to width. Most of the early lead came from the crevice type deposit, but present production is from the predominately flat zinc orebodies. The Graham-Snyder orebody, scene of Eagle Picher operations, is practically all zinc with little or no lead being recovered. Marcasite, present in varying amounts, makes production of finished concentrates by gravity separation impractical. Satisfactory lead and zinc concentrates have been produced since flotation was introduced in the area in 1927. An acid recovery plant was operated for about 20 years after World War I, but it has been dismantled, and no recovery of the iron sulphides in the ores of the district is being made at the present time. In June 1950 there were three companies operating mines and mills, Tri-State Zinc Co., Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., and Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. had completed a shaft at a new orebody and had started to develop the mine which will supply the Cuba City mill. The Cuba Mining Co. was holding the Andrews Mine inactive. The Dodgeville Mining Co. was not operating but was exploring for additional reserves. Several small mines were selling ore to the Eagle Picher mill. A general area map is given in Fig. 1. "The Quesnel Trough is underlain by a thick sequence of mainly Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic volcanic-clastic and sedimentary rocks that lie between the highly deformed Proterozoic and Paleozoic rocks in the Omineca Geanticline to the east and the Upper Paleozoic Cache Creek Group in the Pinchi Geanticline to the west. Broad areas of the Trough between Kamloops and Williams Lake are covered by Eocene volcanics and sediments and by Miocene-Pliocene plateau lava. Granitic intrusions were apparently mainly confined to two major episodes; one about 200 m.y. ago (coeval with the Guichon batholith) and one about 100 m.y. ago. In addition, the region includes small granitic and syenitic intrusions, some porphyritic, that may be all or partly still younger. Exposures in the region are generally small and scattered, obscured by widespread, not necessarily thick glacial deposits. This, together with the extensive Tertiary cover, makes prospecting difficult. The part of the Quesnel Trough discussed here is the direct northwest-ward extension of the copper-rich Kamloops-Merritt-Princeton region. It contains the Boss Mountain molybdenum mine, related to a breccia zone induced in a batholith of the oldest group by a younger intrusion, and the Cariboo Bell copper deposit in Lower Jurassic volcanic-elastic rocks and syenitic intrusions. The Gibraltar deposit, in a 200-m.y. intrusion, is within the Pinchi Geanticline close to the margin of the Trough. Molybdenum prospects are mainly restricted within or near the 100-m.y. granitic rocks. Copper prospects, on the other hand, are most prominent in the volcanic-elastic rocks and in the 200-m.y.-old granitic rocks, although they can also be spatially related to younger intrusions. Copper thus has a wide potential distribution.The writers believe that the region is deserving of careful and comprehensive exploration by directly applying the knowledge and techniques developed in the important producing areas to the south. All of the major pre-Tertiary geological elements seem to have potential for mineral deposits; none should be ignored. A thorough knowledge of the thickness and distribution of the Tertiary rocks and the development of geophysical methods to ""see through"" them is of particular importance."

Finite-element structural analyses were performed to determine the stress distribution and displacements around a single rectangular coal mine opening in a multilayered rock system. The effects of changes in mechanical properties of roof and coal layers, roof layer and mine opening geometry, horizontal-to-vertical load ratio, and structural geologic features on the stress distribution about the opening were studied. Variability in the stiffness and relative thickness of the immediate roof layers can produce a considerable difference in the stress distribution about the opening as compared with that of a homogeneous material. Changes in opening width and horizontal-to-vertical load ratio have different effects on the stress distribution about the opening depending on the composition of the roof layers. In general, where a stiff layer exists in the roof at the surface of the opening, the stresses are higher in the roof and ribs around the opening. Horizontal changes in facies in the roof layers produced by structural geologic features can also greatly alter the stress distribution about the opening compared with the simple layered cases.

Construction projects are becoming more demanding both in terms of time and complexity. This necessitates intricate planning and sequencing of activities at the macro and micro level and continuous flow of resources across the project in order to achieve planned targets. Work and Resource planning need to be done in such a way that limited resources give optimal output. Currently dominant activity-based scheduling techniques like Critical Path Method (CPM) and Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) do not model work-flow or resource-flow through a project life cycle. An extension to the conventional activity based planning is Location Based Management System (LBMS). LBMS has been explored and utilised in the case of repetitive and cyclic projects such as high rise buildings. This study focusses on the application of LBMS to repetitive and non-repetitive components of Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) projects involving construction of substation and cable laying. This paper presents the findings on comparing the current planning practice for cable laying with an LBMS based approach. A key finding of the study was that the conventional practice resulted in a schedule with several coordination issues that could not be identified in the planning reports. Using the LBMS based approach these issues could be identified and decisions required for resolving these could be made.

"Lonmin Platinum has experienced several cases of large-scale hangingwall instabilities during the extraction of the Upper Group 2 Chromitite Layer (UG2) at a number of the Marikana operations along the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex. These instabilities were all attributed to the presence and interaction of prominent geological features and highlighted that assumptions made in the design of the stable pillars and stable span were potentially overly simplistic in these areas. Investigations into the various case studies over the past ten years have resulted in the identification and classification of the rock mass characteristics of the geological structures causing the instabilities.In order to get a better understanding of these instabilities, it is important to understand the structural geology in general, and the sequence of events that led to the formation of the Bushveld Complex in particular. The tectonics involved in the formation of the various layers around the economic mineralized layers has been investigated, and the influence of these tectonic events on the stability of the UG2 stopes hypothesized.Following this investigation, the behaviour of the various layers in the hangingwall of the UG2 is better understood. This paper presents a description of the ground conditions being experienced in the underground stoping environment, the possible source of the associated structures and the resultant behavioural mechanism of these structures causing the rock mass instabilities."

General History The first jaw crusher in the US was patented about 1830, but the Blake crusher that has maintained a substantial advantage over other types was invented in 1858 by Eli Whitney Blake. For going on 150 years the jaw crusher has been an invaluable machine; even today, when gyratory crushers have assumed most of the burden of crushing large tonnages of large rock and ore, the jaw crusher has a firm place in the mining industry. It is interesting that soon after the invention of the Philetius Gates gyratory crusher in 1881, a contest between the first No. 2 Gates and Blake jaw crushers of equal gape showed the gyratory to be 3.2 times as fast. This foretold a day not far in the future when the jaw crusher would not be adequate on the largest jobs. In his Textbook of Ore Dressing (1909) R. H. Richards recom¬mended that the word breaker be used for all machines breaking to relatively large sizes (say to 5 in. or greater), and crusher be used for finer work. Even in the 1968 US Bureau of Mines dictionary of mining terms the work breaker is defined by Richards in this context. However, in modern US usage it is nearly limited to coal breaking. Over the years the jaw crusher has been developed in a variety of forms but it appears today in these three general forms: (I) Blake type, (2) Dodge type, and (3) single toggle (or overhead eccentric) type. All of these crushers have a fixed jaw and a moving jaw, between which the coarse rock fragments are intermittently caught and crushed. The three types are differentiated by the manner in which the movable jaw is moved in relation to the fixed. Types The Blake-type crusher is shown in cross section in Fig. 1. The simplicity and strength that have made it first among jaw crushers are evident. The movable jaw is suspended from a cross-shaft at its upper end, this shaft being carried in bearings on the sides of the frame. The actuating mechanism consists of an eccentric shaft, also supported in frame-mounted bearings, which imparts through a pit¬ man and a pair of toggles a reciprocating motion to the bottom of the swing jaw, the return movement being effected by several spring¬loaded rods. The whole is built into a box frame with the crushing chamber at one end. As in all jaw crushers, the eccentric shaft is equipped with a heavy flywheel that maintains an even speed through¬out each stroke. The Dodge-type crusher illustrated in Fig. 2 is simple, mechani¬cally. Its movable jaw, being pivoted below the discharge opening, has minimum movement at crusher discharge and maximum at crusher feed. Because the choke point coincides with the point of least motion, these crushers are of relatively low capacity, and the rapid action in the feed area gives the machine the advantages of large reduction ratio and closely sized product. Thus, it fits well into low-capacity operations like sample reduction. Besides low capacity, its principal disadvantages are tendency to pack and make fines. The single-toggle or overhead-eccentric type of jaw crusher (see Fig. 3) has gained in usage, starting as a modification of the Dodge idea in that the greatest movement of the movable jaw occurs at the top, and being gradually improved and strengthened to its position today where it covers just as wide a field of application as the Blake type from the standpoint of feed opening. The motion of the movable jaw is the result of the circular motion of the eccentric shaft at the top of the swing jaw combined with the rocking action imparted to the bottom by the inclined toggle plate. Because of light weight and mechanical simplicity, it is economical in small mills and portable plants where the rock is not as tough and abrasive as to punish the machine with excessive impact from shocks, or excessive wear result¬ing from the pronounced vertical component of motion.

OPEN-PIT mining of coal is relatively a recent innovation; men still active in the industry can trace its development. Re- viewing the growth of operations from the original horse-drawn scrapers, through the various stages of power equipment to the huge strip- ping shovels of today, one also notes changes in the methods of what the coal man calls preparation at the face. We really should not call it face preparation because, in contrast to underground mining, a face does not exist in strip mining. Further, preparation of the coal for market at the loading point has already, in but a few years, become largely of historic interest only and modern mines as well as old mines recently modernized rely almost entirely on separate and elaborate preparation plants to produce marketable coal. In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such subprocesses as: transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed; the stressing of particles to a level high enough for breakage; removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone; and prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. Breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult subprocess to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. Two important features of the "Science of Communition" are discussed: the fracture physics and crushing under controlled conditions with special reference to single particle crushing, packed bed crushing, measurement of energy needed for fracture, fragment size distribution, and new surface area produced. The important features of these aspects are detailed, namely, energy balance of a crack, influence of environment, specimen size problems, and energy utilization in single particle crushing.

The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the CaF2-Y203 system for which solidus and liquidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. All specimen compositions were blended from high-purity materials and encapsulated in Mo or Pt20Rh prior toheat treatment. Liquidus temperatures were determined by ceramographic examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Solidus temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis and by electron microprobe analysis of quenched specimens. Terminal solid solubilities were derived by parametric methods. The peritectic system was found to be pseudobinary due to the formation of yttrium oxyfluoride at temperatures near the liquidus. The peritectic point occurs at 7 mole pct Y203 and 1,438° ± 5°C. The terminal solid solubility of Y203 in CaF2 decreases from 7 mole pct at 1,438° C to 1 mole pct at 1,100° C, and the solubility of CaF2 in Y203 decreases from 9.5 to 7 mole pct over the same temperature interval.

A LITERATURE survey1-' of sintering metal pow-A ders and powder compacts indicates that studies have so far been confined primarily to the latter stages of sintering in relatively coarse powders. Presumably this is due to the difficult techniques associated with studies of the early stages of sintering. Recent experimental and theoretical investigationsL-" on the preparation and the magnetic properties of ultrafine ferromagnetic powders suggest the possi- bility of following the sintering process from a very much earlier stage than has previously been considered. It is now well-known that ferromagnetic powder particles which are below a critical size behave as single domains and exhibit permanent magnet qualities characterized by a very high coercive force. When the same particles are fully sintered, the coercive force decreases to very low values corresponding to those of the solid metal. The potential use of the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig to clean fine coal has been studied. It was found capable of cleaning coal at very fine sizes, at least to 0.038 mm at relative densities as low as 1.6. This effect was however very dependent upon the solids feed rate and the absence of significant amounts of clay slimes. Comparisons with a spiral and a laboratory scale Jameson Flotation Cell were made. The concept of recleaning spiral product was investigated. Use of a spiral to reclean the coarse fraction, and a centrifugal jig or flotation to treat the fine fraction, gave significant improvements in final ash values over spiral recleaning of the full size. Future R&D needs include improving feed rate capacity, and application to problems like pyrite removal that are difficult to solve via flotation.

Four samples of manganese-bearing material from the Aroostook County, Maine, deposits were tested at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., to determine their amenability to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods. The samples represented material from the Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit, the Dudley farm, and the Burnham farm and contained 11 to 14 percent manganese. None of the tests produced appreciably enriched concentrates suitable for further treatment for the production of ferromanganese. The intimate association of the manganese minerals with iron and siliceous minerals requires extremely fine grinding to liberate the manganese minerals in these ores and prevents efficient concentration by physical means.

The transformation which steel undergoes in slow cooling, from the condition of austenite whelk above the transformation rage into that of pearlite plus either ferrite or cementite below that range, is subject to great lag. This transformation is essentially the pearlitizing of the austenite. Indeed the hardenillg of steel is due to this lag, which is made so great by extremely rapid cooling that a very large part of the transformation itself is restrained, so that the rapid cooling catches the metal in an only partly transformed state, that of martensite, and under favorable contditions even in an almost wholly untransformed state, as in the cases of Maurer's austenitic manganese steel. Hadfield's austemtic. manganese steel, 25 per cent. nickel steel, and other anstenitic alloy steels, arc austenitic even after slow cooling. It has long been known that this lag increases (1) with the rapidity of cooling, (2) with the presence of certain retarding elements, notably manganese and nickel, and (3) with the temperature from which cooling starts. The present inquiry touches the last of these influences, but incidentally it throws light on the first also. This influence of higher heating ill increasing lag manifests itself in different ways which, though they may at first seem unrelated, are in fact hut different aspects of one and the same thing.
