HOW the Engineers' Memorial clock and carillon at Louvain has impressed the people of that city is indicated by the following letter sent by the Secretary of the University of Louvain to the Secretary of the United Engineering Society. We are still full of the memories of that splendid July 4, when we came into such .delightful contact with our American friends and more specially with the representation of the engineering societies of the United States. It was a great joy for all the members of the University to see those, American friends who have given to us such a splendid memorial in honor of- the brave men who fell in the Great War.

Your interesting and well-written paper brings up the issue of the purpose or use of a mineral property appraisal, specifically the value of these evaluations when the quality and quantity of the mineral resource to be exploited have not been thoroughly investigated. I am not a practicing professional in regards to valuation of limestone investment opportunities. I simply wish to make a few generic observations about the appraisal process in order to stimulate meaningful thinking by appraisal professionals whose reports may be reviewed by professional investors and "laypersons" alike. It is my contention that the analysis given in your paper is very thorough, considering the data that was made available to you. But I would not like to be the person responsible for investment decision making without having a feel for the risk involved. Therefore, the reviewer must classify this type of analysis as relatively "subjective" because they have not received an indication of the inherent risk involved in exploiting a mineral resource. This risk can best be quantified by using probabilistic methods in conjunction with the quality and quantity of the mineral to be produced. Most appraisals passively ignore this problem. Specifically, you have accurately identified the various costs and values entering the economic appraisal process. These can usually be quantified with a great deal more certainty than the capability of the resource to provide 25 years of quality material. Also, in Cases A (West Virginia)and B (Alabama), you are fortunate enough to have previous operations data. What if there had never been production from these properties? How does a potential mineral property investor evaluate the resource capability to meet various projected financial outcomes without spending a good deal of up-front capital to drill and delineate enough quality resources for a 20-plus year operation. These questions pose a substantial risk to any potential mineral investor. Only probabilistic methods should be used to quantify this type of problem, short of drilling and metallurgical testing. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace be direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. THIS paper is the second of a series on the effect of various elements on hot-working characteristics of Fe-C alloys to be issued by this laboratory. The investigations being conducted at the Ferroalloy Research Branch of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Redding, Calif., involve fundamental research on the effects of various alloying materials and impurities on the physical properties of high purity Fe-C alloys. This paper deals with the determination of the limit of forgeability of steels containing varying amounts of manganese and sulphur. A paper discussing the hot-working characteristics and the physical properties of the forgeable alloys is being prepared. One of the principal impurities in all steels is sulphur.. The phenomenon, hot-shortness, commonly attributed to sulphur, has long been a source of expense and inconvenience to both the maker and user of steels. In steelmaking practice, this effect of sulphur has been overcome by the addition of manganese which, apparently, acts as a desulphurizer. Manganese is also used as a deoxidizer and alloying material. The critical and strategic position of man- ganese gives added importance to research which may contribute to its conservation and more effective utilization. It is not the purpose or intention in the present paper to give any explanation of the mechanism of either hot-shortness or its prevention but rather to report the results of forging high purity Fe-C alloys of the range of compositions near the limit of hot-forgeability. Temperatures for each phase of reduction were duplicated within 20" to 30°F for all tests. The starting material was sponge iron, which, after melting and purification, gave a high purity iron containing about 0.001 pct each of silicon and phosphorus. Scrap iron was not considered suitable because of its high percentage of contaminants and wide variation in analyses. The sponge iron was melted and refined for melting stock in a three-phase, direct-arc, size ST, Moore Rapid Lectromelt furnace with a 500 kva rating as described in the preceding paper. Additives were carefully selected to avoid addition of contaminants. The sulphur was added as resublimed flowers of sulphur or purified roll sulphur of analytical grade. The manganese used was dehydrogenated high purity electrolytic material produced by the Bureau of Mines plant at Boulder City, Nev. High purity aluminum in the form of wire was used for deoxidation. The limestone was obtained locally and had the following analysis: CaO, 53.7 pct; MgO, 0.8; ignition loss, 42.4; R2O3, 0.2; SiO2,3.0; and P2O5, 0.014.

This paper summarizes the results of treating arsenic­bearing refractory gold concentrates from six gold Mines of Chi­na by using bioleaching method and discusses the conditions of bioleaching processes. Results indicate that Thiobacillus fer­rooxidans T-3 Strain can intensely oxidize arsenopyrite, how­ever oxidation rate and degree differe considerably for different. During initial inoculation of 5 X 106 cell/ml. FeH contration generaly 4 -8 g/1. Sample size > 80 % - 3 20 mesh and pulp density 10 % ( w /v) and leaching time ,1 -- G clays, arsenic re­moval rate reached more than 80 % , Fe extraction ,10 - GO% desulfurization rate 30-45% after bacterial oxidation of 4-G days.

Reliable prediction of dynamic deformations is important when planning to undermine important structures that cannot tolerate large relative deformations and or large horizontal strains. This paper presents examples of dynamic deformation profiles that include subsidence, horizontal displacements, and horizontal strain for a number of points over a retreating longwall panel in the eastern United States. The prediction points are located at different distances from the excavation rib and therefore present a different response in terms of dynamic movements. The formulation is based on the influence function method as implemented in the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS). Results show that the subsidence development curve may be reliably predicted for surface points in the middle of the panel. However, in cases where points may be affected by the magnitude of the edge effect offset, subsidence predictions may be very conservative, that is, higher than actual movements.

Acid mine drainage containing heavy metal ions is a large environmental problem facing the mining and mineral processing industry. The femte coprecipitation is a novel technique for removing heavy metal ions from waste water, recently applied to acid mine drainage. The fenite precipitation is usually performed at high temperature and therefore if applied in conventional manner, it becomes uneconomical to treat large quantities of acid mine drainage. In this paper the ferrite precipitation at ambient temperature-is &died. The possible mechanism of ferrite formation is discussed Experimental results from Noranda Tailing and Berkeley Pit water treated by this process are presented.

"This paper presents an analysis technique for the solidification of metal castings. This method, based on a modified finite difference scheme with an irregular mesh, is capable of dealing with the complex geometries of castings. The nonlinearities in material properties of specific heat and thermal conductivity, arising from the phase change during solidification, are accounted for in the step-by-step calculations. Two solidification problems are solved with this analysis technique and the calculated results compare satisfactorily with experimental data. IntroductionCasting process design engineers are often faced with the difficult problem of designing castings to be produced porosity-free. Since the solidification of metal is affected by many interacting variables such as the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of both the molten metal and the mold, it is easily seen why this is a difficult task.Typically, casting tooling design is an intuitive process which builds on past successful methods. After processing equipment is constructed, trial castings are made and examined for dimensions and integrity. Changes in the tooling are generally required to improve casting soundness or to reduce cycle time. In the permanent mold process, tooling is complex and difficult to alter after initial construction. The water-cooled steel molds are part of the complete automated system. Associated holding furnaces, pouring ladles, casting conveyers, and utility connections all make other than minor adjustments a costly and time consuming task. An analytical method for using the principles of heat transfer for predicting solidification patterns would be of great value in the permanent mold process by minimizing costly changes."

Leachates from gold heap-leaching mines may contain selenium concentrations as high as 2 mg/L. Previous studies report satisfactory selenium adsorption by activated alumina from relatively "clean" drinking waters. However, the findings of these studies cannot be directly applied to the treatment of mine leachate where other ions compete for the alumina adsorption sites. This study evaluated the adsorption of selenium from a mine leachate to develop design parameters for a full-scale activated alumina process. The study revealed that 68% of the selenium in the leachate could be removed by alumina at pH levels greater than 5.0. At pH levels less than 4, silica was poorly adsorbed by alumina, and selenium adsorption was improved. Silica adversely affected the selenium adsorption capacity.

THIRD-LAW entropy data for zirconium-containing compounds are sparse. Kelley a lists entropies at 298° K. for the oxide, tetrachloride, nitride, and silicate, as well as for the metal. The present paper presents heat capacities between 51° and 298° K. and entropies at 298.15° K. for the zirconates of the alkaline-earth metals-calcium, strontium, and barium. The authors believe magnesium zirconate does not exist as a stable compound at room temperature. Entropies of formation from the constituent oxides also are given. MATERIALS The materials used in this investigation were synthesized and analyzed in the Berkeley Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Calcium zirconate was prepared by heating an intimate mixture of reagent-grade calcium carbonate and pure zirconia for 30 hours between 1,200° and 1,300° C. and for 32 hours between 1,400° and 1,500° C. As part of the heating schedule, the sample was ground and mixed seven times. Periodic analyses and minor adjustments of composition were made. Analysis of the final product gave 31.19 percent calcium oxide (theoretically 31.28 percent) and 68.67 percent zirconia (theoretically 68.72 percent). The X-ray diffraction pattern agreed with that in the ASTM catalog.

These analyses are preliminary to a study of fluid and energy relations in the Basal Sundance reservoir of that field, and the determinations of porosity will be used in subsequent studies requiring calculations of the volumetric capacity of the reservoir and estimation of the reserves of oil and gas.]

AN EDITORIAL on the Strike Situation in the Coal mining industry in the New York Evening Post of Nov. 4, 1919, gave what purported to be statistics of the Department of Labor, for a period of two weeks, which showed an average for the year, based on these two weeks, of 32% hours per week. This mode of arriving at the number of hours per week, while not accurate, is not so far off from the facts as to call for any special comment. The report of the U. S. Geological Survey, Department of Coal Statistics, give so the number of days worked in 1917 as 243; reducing the same to hours per week, assuming 8 hours per day, shows a weekly operation of mines at an average of 36J4 hours. But this assumption is not exactly correct, for the reason that it is not very often that the miners work the full 8 hours per day. There are many explanations for this, but it is not pertinent to this statement to discuss them now, as the important thing to consider is whether a 30-hour week would be for the best interest of not only the men themselves, but the public or country in general.

Os aços baixo carbono microligados representam uma parcela significativa da produção de placas de aço na ArcelorMittal Tubarão e sua participação na produção total tem sido crescente ao longo dos últimos anos. Entretanto, grande parte da necessidade do mercado por este tipo de material se dá em larguras pequenas, o que inviabiliza a sua produção em equipamentos de grande escala, como é o caso da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. Neste trabalho será apresentado um resumo das ações tomadas na ArcelorMittal Tubarão visando viabilizar a produção deste tipo de aço em pequenas larguras, através do aumento de sua velocidade de lingotamento e análise constante da qualidade interna das placas. Uma vez consolidado o aumento de velocidade, com a consequente redução do tempo de lingotamento, foi possível reavaliar a aceitação de placas com menor largura e padronizar esta nova condição. Também, durante a execução deste trabalho, foram reavaliados os critérios de retirada de amostras para os ensaios de macro-ataque nos aços de baixo carbono e baixa liga.

A comprehensive understanding of the rocks associated with coal seams, and also of the coal itself, is essential in assessing the likely behaviour of the materials before, during and after the mining process. The nature of the rock materials involved in coal mining can give rise to risks from adverse geomechanical properties, create problems in coal quality control and produce difficulties with environmental impacts, all of which may affect the profitability, impact and safety of the operation. Examples of issues associated with rock composition include slaking and degradation leading to roof, floor, pit wall or spoil pile instability, ignition of methane in mine atmospheres by frictional processes, liberation of quartz-rich dusts into ventilation systems, production of coal with unfavourable preparation or marketing characteristics, and escape of suspended solids or potentially toxic leachates from spoil piles and other types of emplacements. Methods for evaluating rock composition include microscopic examination, chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction, with the latter being especially useful for fine-grained rocks or for clay-bearing materials. Other techniques, such as geomechanical testing and down-hole geophysical logging, are also useful, but give less direct information about the actual composition of the materials involved. Indeed, understanding of rock composition, through microscope or quantitative X-ray diffraction studies, provides a basis for checking information from other sources, explaining different aspects of rock behaviour, and an essential link in relating geophysical or geotechnical data to broader-based geological models as part of the risk assessment process.

Introduction Between 1903 and 1905, W. Mclnnis, of the Geological Survey of Canada, made a micrometer traverse of the Kawinogans (Crow) river from Kapkichegimaga lake to its junction with the Otoskwin river. He reported that a belt of Keewatin rocks, 1 to 4 miles wide, was exposed along the course of the river for 17 miles east of Kapkichegimaga lake. Prospectors and exploration companies paid little attention to the mineral possibilities of this belt until the summer of 1928 when, with the adoption of airplane transportation, the area became readily accessible. Within a short time widespread interest was aroused by the announcement of attractive finds, and a mild rush followed. During the winter months, hundreds of claims were staked on either side of Crow river for 12 miles east of Pickle lake. In the summer of 1929, much of this ground was systematically explored and a considerable amount of development work was done on the known deposits.

THE Jacksonville plant of Humphreys Gold Corp., operating under leases from National Lead Co. and Rutile Mining Co. of Florida, recovers rutile, ilmenite, zircon, and monazite from an ancient beach deposit containing about 2.5 pct of these minerals in combination. The location of the plant is unique, being situated about ten miles from the center of Jacksonville, Fla., surrounded by a thriving suburb. Two four-lane highways pass within 1 ½ miles of the plant. An expressway now under construction will pass over the tailing pile, within 500 ft of the mine office. The elevation at the plant site is approximately 50 ft above sea level. This is one of two mines producing titanium minerals and zircon in Florida. Another mine is also operated by Humphreys at Starke, about 50 miles southeast of Jacksonville. The Jacksonville deposit extends about six miles in a north-south direction, averaging approximately one half mile wide and twenty ft thick. The ever increasing number of vehicles is leading to slow-moving and even stationary traffic sitting longer in traffic jams over extensive city areas. This traffic situation causes a sharp increase in pollutant emissions from vehicles, and high levels of pollution usually result throughout the built-up area. Reducing the pollution level by using traffic routing measures to speed up the flow of traffic in the existing street network is only possible in exceptional cases.In many cases the only option for achieving a significant improvement in traffic conditions is to shift the traffic underground using a road tunnel or underpass. Such tunnel routes suck off the traffic from large sections of the city, thereby easing the overall traffic flow. Thus on the one hand it produces a sharp reduction in pollution levels in the area of the tunnel route, but on the other hand it can result in locally increased exhaust pollution levels from longer tunnel systems that require mechanical ventilation. The air extracted by the ventilation system is blown out into the atmosphere either directly through the tunnel portal, or via a venting tower. Pollution can therefore occur in the area surrounding such exhaust air outlets.Thus if a tunnel is planned in a city, then closer investigation is required of both aspects: the reduction in pollution in the area of the tunnel route thanks to relocating the traffic and easing congestion, and the increased short-range pollution around the tunnel portals (shafts).

Jet grout column formation at large depths are prone to several uncertainties, such as inaccuracy in setting out boreholes, drilling deviation, soil variability and reduced jetting energy at the nozzle. This would result in shorter cutting distance of the jet, with potential lack of interlock between grouted columns. A design strategy for mitigating the risk should include a soil investigation program aimed at discovering potential variability in soil conditions at the locations of jetting. Determination of soil strength profiles with depth would be useful for evaluation of jetting parameters and prediction of the achievable cutting distance at any depth. Selection of design column spacing should include allowance for setting out accuracy, verticality of the boreholes and the achievable jet cutting distance. For deep jet grouting operations, it would be necessary to take into account the energy losses at the nozzle inlet; however the increase in the presiding pressure at the nozzle outlet at depth is small relative to the range of jetting pressures commonly employed and would not affect the cutting distance to any significant degree. Design column spacing should not be so close as to cause problems with ?masking? which may lead to localized ungrouted zones of soil. For effective field control, boreholes should be cased up to the top elevation of the grouted zone so that the orientation of the borehole can be measured prior to grout injection. An analytical equation for calculating the cutting distance is proposed for adjusting jetting parameters where necessary to compensate for drilling deviation and changes in soil conditions. It is preferable that jet grouting trials be executed at elevations that correspond to the actual production jet grouting depths for accurate evaluation of jet cutting performance.

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. "Underground blasting operations are challenging from the standpoint of the distribution of explosivesenergy representative of ring blasting. Energy from both shock and pressure regimes of commercialexplosives may appear concentrated in the collar region of a typical ring blast and diluted at the toes of holes due to the oblique geometries of blastholes. The non-homogenous nature of ore in whichexplosives are distributed via drillholes, adds to the complexities of generating particulate profiles from fragmented material with consistencies that are predictable from blast pattern to blast pattern - well suited for specific underground handling equipment and mill processing. In an ideal world, it would be the blasting operations themselves that represent the primary crushing mechanism, or at least mitigate mechanical crushing that can comprise a large component of the cost in generating suitable muck. This paper presents a dynamic break view in 3D that allows a planner to visualize the potential break zone around a blasthole generated by an explosive load using a Kleine field. Simple as it sounds, this methodology provides information that can be used in conjunction with cavity monitoring surveys (CMS) to potentially judge dilution due to overbreak as well as recovery for a typical blast. As examples, there are two break geometries that are examined regarding circular breaks and elliptical breaks around blastholes. Using a Kleine field to define break, a planner generated isosurface can be generated and compared to CMS data for calibration and prediction, using AEGIS 3D ring design software."
