In 2023, an Indonesian coal mine experienced significant contamination of an emulsion blend explosive by dynamic mud and water flow, triggered by flooding due to exceptionally high rainfall. This intrusion into explosive columns compromised the stability and efficiency of blasting operations, thereby impacting overall mining productivity. The extent and impact of these contaminants on the stability and performance of the emulsion blend explosive were rigorously analyzed through a robust assessment methodology that included comprehensive field measurements and controlled laboratory experiments designed to replicate the challenging site conditions. Utilizing a combination of theoretical calculations and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, this study evaluates the kinetic interactions between dynamic mud flows and emulsion explosives within drill holes. The methodology integrates Torricelli’s theorem for velocity assessments and Darcy’s Law for understanding the penetration mechanics of mud into the emulsion blend. CFD simulations are further correlated with actual blast data to assess discrepancies between theoretical predictions and real-world outcomes. Results demonstrate a significant reduction in the velocity of detonation (VOD) of the explo-sives, traced directly to mud contamination levels, which align with the quantified penetration rates in the study. Practical measures for mitigating such contamination are proposed, including the reinforcement of water-ways, culverts, and bund walls at drilling locations based on validated simulation data. Additionally, rec-ommendations for operational adjustments during high rainfall events are discussed, aiming to enhance blasting safety and efficiency. The paper concludes by suggesting future research directions towards the development of more resilient emulsion formulations and enhanced predictive modeling techniques to better forecast the impacts of en-vironmental variables on explosive performance in mining operations

BLISTER formation on wrought aluminum products has been a matter of concern to aluminum fabricators for many years. The fact that blisters make their appearance during the final stages of fabrication means that much time and effort have been expended before it is evident that the material must be scrapped. This and the loss of production are ample reasons for embarking on a research program to find out more about blistering and possible methods of control. Many excellent papers on this subject have appeared in the technical literature in the last few years. In one of the more recent papers, Kostronl gives a fairly complete review of the problem of gas in aluminum and blistering in general. From the work of the various investigators, a general mechanism for the formation of blisters has evolved and may be summarized briefly as follows: Hydrogen gas is usually present in the cast ingot, in the atomic or ionic state, in excess of the solid solubility. At room temperature the gas atoms are relatively immobile, but at elevated temperatures they become mobile and diffuse to free surfaces where they associate to form molecules. If these free surfaces are discontinuities within the ingot then the associated gas molecules collect and build up considerable pressure until equilibrium is reached with the dissolved gas around the discontinuity. Since the solubility of the gas is proportional to the square root of the partial pressure it is evident that large pressures may be built up at the discontinuities. When the metal is rolled to sheet the pressure of the gas in these, discontinuities is sufficient to deform the surface of the sheet and form a blister, particularly when the strength of the material is reduced during the annealing. Although the mechanism of the formation of blisters was fairly well known, the actual impor- tance of the individual roles played by the gas and the discontinuities was not so well established that positive methods for control of blistering were at hand. It was the object of the investigation to learn more about the nature of the discontinuities giving rise to blistering and to develop methods of control. The investigation was carried out in three stages as follows: a) A study of the more commonly used methods of removing hydrogen from aluminum, such as fluxing and holding, and their effects on blistering. b) Location of the discontinuities giving rise to blistering. c) A study, by indirect methods, of the movement of gas in the metal and its effect on blistering, and the development of methods of blister control during fabrication. Removing Gas and Reducing Blistering by Fluxing or Holding-—The work of removing gas and reducing blistering by fluxing or holding was carried out on metal of Alcan 2s (1100) composition with an artificially high gas content. The high gas content was obtained by introducing water into the melt prior to casting; the water reacted with the aluminum forming A12O3 and hydrogen. The procedure was to raise the gas content by introducing water into an aluminum melt and using half the melt to cast one ingot immediately. The remaining metal was treated again with water to make up for the reduction in gas content during holding, while the first ingot was being cast, and then given a fluxing or holding treatment and cast into an ingot. Samples for gas determination were cast from the molten metal before and after the gassing operation; before, after, and during fluxing, and while casting. Samples were also cut from sections of the ingots. Gas determinations were made on these samples using the well known vacuum fusion technique. All ingots were hot rolled at 500°C to 0.250-in. slab which, in turn, was cold rolled to 0.040 in. sheet. This paper presents a technique for representing and analyzing random motions and hazardous events in a computer simulated three-dimensional workplace, providing machine designers and safety analysts with a new technique to evaluate ways to reduce operator-machine interaction hazards. Technical data in this paper is based upon a project striving to reduce workers' risks from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. By simulating motions of an operator's random behavior and a machine's appendage, researchers can accurately identify hazards, and use that information to form safe designs for mining equipment appendage velocity. Validating the model provided improvements in the operator's optimal viewing area, work task- starting positions, and operator's motions for a more accurate random behavior. Preliminary simulation results provided (1) an interesting approach to research data gathering in that there was no need for live subjects and test sites and costs associated with experiments become insignificant and (2) that the model was versatile by showing it was capable of accurately mimicking the range collision forces versus speed, operators' size, and risk behaviors found in actual industrial situations and showed (I) that response time significantly affects the number of collisions experienced by the virtual subject and (2) that analysts must be discerning with the model and not read more From the databases than what the simulation model was designed to deliver. A detailed morphological study has been made of the pro-eutectoid TiCr, and the eutectoid reactions in a Ti-17.42 pct Cr alloy isothermally transformed at temperatures from 775° through 5561°C. The morphologies of proeute,ctoid TiCr2 were found to be subject to description by the Dube morphological classification system. Grain boundary allotriomo.lphs are the dominant plpoeutectoid morphology throughout the temperature range investigated. lntragranular plates, and especially Widmanstatten sideplates, form only in small numbers. This morphological pattern differs markedly from that of the proeutectoid a reaction in hypoeutectoid Ti-Cr alloys (AIME Trans., 1957, vol. 209, p. 1227; 1958, vol. 212, p. 624), in which plates form prolifically throughout wide ranges of temperature. The eutectoid reaction is nonlamellar in character at 675°C. An increasingly prominent lamellar component develops at lower temperatures. The proeutectoid TiCr 2 and the eutectoid transformations have been studied metallographically in a hypereutectoid titanium-chromium alloy. This investigation was undertaken with the immediate objective of comparing these transformations with their counterparts in hypoeutectoid titanium-chromium alloys, studies of which have been recently completed.1,2 It was also intended, however, to contribute to the general literature on transformations of these types. Especially in the proeutectoid case, this literature is still sufficiently sparse to make difficult the testing of generalizations on the mechanisms of these transformations. TiCr, is the only intermetallic compound in the titanium-chromium system.3-5 The TiCr2 phase field extends to a maximum temperature of 1350°C) and encompasses the approximate composition range of 62 to 68 pct Cr at lower temperatures.3'4 At temperatures below 1000°C, TiCr2 has a MgCu,-type fcc structure, with 24 atoms comprising a unit cell.6,7 Only fragmentary observations on the morphology of proeutectoid TiCr2 have been previously reported. An observation which is of considerable importance with respect to the results obtained during the present investigation was made, however, on anisother-mally transformed alloys with high chromium (48 to 70 pct Cr) contents.3"8 Despite the occurrence of extensive impingement, it is apparent that a substantial proportion of the proeutectoid TiCr, which precipitated in these alloys grew in the form of Widmanstatten plates. Midwest is a unique uranium deposit with exceptionally high arsenic content. The ore body is located 17km west of the McClean Lake operation. The McClean Lake mill will be modified to process Midwest ore and handle solid wastes coming from the Midwest water treatment plant. This paper describes the modifications required of the McClean Lake mill, process challenges associated with treatment of the arsenic, and the possibility of recovering nickel and cobalt as a by-product. It also reviews the complexity in the design of the Midwest water treatment facility which incorporates reverse osmosis technology with conventional physical-chemical water treatment.

This report outlines the modifications that have been carried out to the original prototype rectangular shaft sinking equipment for its use in a circular shaft. The surface testing of the machine is described where seven, 24 ft. diameter shafts were excavated to an average depth of 21 ft. at rates ranging between 1 ft/hr and 1.9 ft/hr depending upon the prevailing conditions. The durability and productivity standards for the equipment were established indicating that the objectives of the project had been realized. That is, when using the machine the sinking rates could be increased by 25% and costs reduced by a corresponding amount compared with conventional drill and blast methods. In addition it was shown that the machine had been developed to a state of fitness for sustained underground use.

For the past 3 years Waihi as a community has been actively engaged in consultation about its future with regard to the environmental, cultural, economic and social viability. This has been made possible through the implementation of the Waihi Community Vision (WCV) process which bought together a diverse range of people and interests.   Through their collaboration and collective energies, they produced a montage of possibilities for the future of Waihi, known as the 2020 Vision. A proceeding evaluation process was adopted by the group to enable the myriad of projects to be assessed and prioritised in terms of the communityÆs social, economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual values.   From this came the desire to be involved in the implementation of these ideas and create an organisation that could facilitate the successful manifestation of the 2020 Vision and other suitable projects.   The Vision Waihi Trust (VWT) was formed in February 2006 and is intended to be a tool through which the community can address issues about its future sustainability. They will work collaboratively with community groups, Hauraki District Council and Newmont Waihi Gold to develop and implement innovative and practical solutions. It should be acknowledged that such outcomes are subject to influence by both external and internal factors and it is important to consider this when looking at sustainability issues.   Waihi is now at a very interesting stage of its development and has the opportunity to proactively design and implement plans to determine its future rather than just let things evolve. A town with a strong sense of its roots and with a strong community identity may be a more attractive as a place live and work. There are additional business opportunities which may also be stimulated by a community that takes charge of its own destiny.   The process that has been worked through over the past three years gives a solid foundation on which to build and must be viewed as positive community development. Waihi certainly has a unique proposition to take to the marketplace, based on its rich gold mining heritage and current modern day mining operations. This requires investigation, refinement and implementation and Vision Waihi Trust looks forward to building to a vibrant and prosperous Waihi in the years to come.

The hydrogen embrittlement and stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of an a -titanium alloy and its two kinds of welding samples have been investigated. The results show that this alloy has very low susceptibility to SCC, and the values of Kiscc for the alloy are 46.4 MPa ? m' 65.86 MPa ? mu2 in the direction of T-L and L-T, respectively. The scanning electron fractographs show transgranular and quasi-cleavage fracture. The hydrogen embrittlement results show that the notch sample of the alloy is not sensitive to hydrogen, but the electro-beam welding and diving-arc welding samples are sensitive.

"Attempts have been made to produce hardened structures of a pseudomorphic type in various carbon and alloy steels. In order to obtain martensite with a fine distribution of cementite, an initial structure of fine lamellar or nodular pearlite is required; this may be obtained by conventional means. This is followed by partial austenitization and quenching.Two methods have been tried to induce partial austenitization:(a) A resistance (direct current) heating method involving rapid entry into the austenite field.(b) A new method, described as the ""threshold"" technique, involving homogenization of temperature just below A 1, followed by entry into the austenite field; two furnaces are required.The resulting structures have been examined for microstructures, hardness, tensile, and impact values. The tensile properties are comparable with those obtainable by conventional treatment methods. Impact values are disappointing, but this is explainable from the nature of the manifold changes occurring."

In a study of the principal factors affecting the transport of coal-water mixtures through a centrifugal pump and a pipeline, the interrelation between solids concentration, velocity, and pressure drop was established for a minus 2-in. bituminous lump coal in concentrations up to 48% by weight. Optimum concentrations were found to exist for maximum capacity of a given pipeline and for minimum energy requirements per ton of coal. Coal size degradation by particle fracture took place in the pump; abrasion and attrition to form fines took place in both pump and line. A novel system of studying flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipelines by the determination of relative sound intensities was developed. The hydraulic transport of minerals is in part an established art and in part a relatively new field of industrial technology. The established art developed especially where the mineral was under water, where water was used in hydraulic mining, or where large quantities of water had to be pumped from the mining site to expose the mineral. Power requirements and limited life of pumps and pipelines, under such conditions, were relatively unimportant. Examples may be found in dredging, and in hydraulic mining and transportation of phosphate rock.' In the design of a coal pipeline the most needed information relates to flow characteristics, power requirements, pressure drop, size degradation, and size segregation as a function of solids-water ratio and size distribution of the mineral. A considerable amount of information has become available concerning pressure drop and energy requirements.2'3 These topics were therefore not studied intensively. Coal degradation, however, has not been clearly delineated. Lammers and coworkers4 showed that coal may be severely degraded in size but did not distinguish between degradation produced in the pump and in the line. It is the primary purpose of this paper to outline techniques used to acquire some of the much needed design data. A full report of the investigation is to be published by the Bureau of Mines at a later date. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus for circulation tests (hereafter referred to as Type III tests) consisted essentially of a loop and a centrifugal solids handling pump, with attendant instrumentation, and coal weighing and feeding equipment. It also included an adequate water supply, as shown in Fig. 1. The selection of 6-in., schedule 40, carbon steel pipe was based on the top size of coal to be used. Assuming that the top size of coal should not exceed 1/3 the inside diameter of the pipe, a 6-in. pipe would accommodate 2-in. coal, a realistic size for transport from the mine face. An 872-ft loop was constructed first. Later a few tests were made with a lengthened circuit of 1361 ft by superimposing an additional loop on the original one. All bends used were of 3-ft radius. A noisemeter microphone, taped to the pipe at various points, but generally about 50 ft downstream of the pump, was used to sense segregation of the coal and the length of slugs of coal in water. To measure the stream velocity, radioactive sources were encapsulated in plastic cubes. The specific gravity of the blocks was adjusted to 1.3 and 1.8 to simulate low ash and high ash coal particles. Their passage through the pipeline was detected by a Geiger counter. This paper makes no claim to any new idea; it simply reviews the Treasury Department Regulations pertaining to the practical application of depreciation and depletion and other allowances governing taxation of oil and gas properties. Other methods may be existent, but as they may not conform to the legal status they must be discarded. In complying with the present laws governing the industry with regard to taxation and the allowable deductions therefrom, the following considerations are essential: Depletion, depreciation, amortization, other allowances, and items not, deductible. It is definitely understood that depletion is the loss or exhaustion sustained in the continuous operating of an oil and gas property, and that each unit of oil or gas taken out reduces the value of the property until its final exhaustion. Depletion applies only to the natural deposits of oil and gas due to their removal in the course of exploitation of any property. Depreciation is defined to cover the waste of assets due to exhaustion, wear and tear, and obsolescence of the physical property, and is separate and distinct from depletion; its allowance is that amount which should be set aside for the taxable year in such sums as for the useful life of the property will suffice to repay its original cost—or its value as of Mar. 1, 1913, if acquired by the taxpayer before that date—less the salvage value at the end of such useful life. Amortization is allowed for such facilities as were built or acquired on or after Apr. 6, 1917, for the production of articles contributing to the prosecution of the war and, in the case of vessels, those built and acquired after that date. The amount to be extinguished, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value under stable post-war conditions. Claims for amortization must be unmistakably differentiated in the returns from all other claims of depreciation. The taxpayer is also required to furnish full information with the claims for amortization to the full satisfaction of the Commissioner. Further reference is directed to the specific rules and regulations for making these claims.

Gravity-fed three-product dense medium cyclone(GTDMC)is usually used as the main coal washing equipment in coking coal preparation plant. It can produce three products with a low density suspension at the same time. Raw coal and dense medium are fed separately into the cyclone. Only the qualified low-density medium suspension is pumped into the cyclone while the raw coal is fed into the first-stage 1200mm cyclone axially at the top end by gravity. The 1200mm cyclone with a cylindrical form is for low-density separation. The clean coal with light density and slower-settling velocity moves directly towards the low pressure zone along the axis and is carried through the vortex-finder to the overflow. Only the heavy products pass through the "separating zones" to the wall of 1200mm cyclone and then migrate into the series-connected second-stage 850mm cyclone through the tangential outlet. The medium suspension from the first-stage cyclone is thickened and contains more magnetite coarse particles. The second-stage cyclone typically consists of a cylindrical section and conical part. These are all favorable for the second-stage cyclone to separate at a high density. Production practices show that the clean coal and the gangue rarely mixed in the middling, the lower limit of the separation is 0.2 mm, the Organic Efficiency and the Ecart probable of the first stage is 98.30% and 0.026 kg/L respectively.

For the 22nd year, the chance to exchange knowledge, experience and business cards drew hundreds of mining and phosphate professionals for a two-day regional Phosphate Conference in Lakeland, Florida Nearly 400 people participated in the October conference, which focused on the phosphate industry?s future success. There were 41 exhibitors, 13 program advertisers and 23 sponsors among those supporting the conference. It was chaired by David Gossett, 2006-2007 SME Florida Section Chairman. In the opening panel session that he chaired, John Garlanger (SME) of Ardaman and Associates posed the questions; ?How successful has the industry been? How do we measure it and what factors contributed to the industry?s success? How long will the ethanol boom last? Can the industry obtain the permits it needs to mine for the next 30 years? Can the industry attract and retain the quality of workers it needs??

The expanded west pit of the 15 Mta (13.6 stpy) El Cerrejon mine will eventually reach a maximum depth of 270 m (890 ft). Slope-stability evaluations indicated that this depth, combined with structural complexities, would create a serious risk of footwall instability. Stabilization calls for anchoring the footwall by the installation of 9- to 33-m- (30- to 108 ft-) long multistrand steel cable bolts. For each of the 15-m- (50-ft-) high mining benches, a row of bolts is installed with variable horizontal spacing, depending on the dip magnitude. Cable bolting is now standard operating practice, and an estimated 11,800 bolts will be installed during the life of the mine. Results to date have been satisfactory in terms of the stability condition of the bolted slopes.

The oxygen uncoupling property of the oxygen carrier is essential for the chemical looping gasification process. In this paper,the combined Cu-based oxygen carrier were prepared by mechanical mixing method. XRD and SEM were used to characterize the oxygen carrier prepared. TG experiments were performed in a thermal analyzer to investigate the oxygen uncoupling property. The XRD pattern of the fresh oxygen carriers showed that the phases of the oxygen carriers were stable.The active phase of oxygen carrier was CuMnO. With the increasing of x 3-x 4 heating rate, the starting and ending temperatures of the reduction reaction increased. However, the reaction time decreased and the reduction rate increased. With the increasing of oxygen concentration, the starting temperatures of the reduction reaction shifted to high level. Temperature had great effect on the reduction rate and the reduction rate increased with increasing of the reduction temperatures.

Fluidized bed roasting of copper concentrates from Mt. Morgan, Mt. Lyell, Mt. Isa, and Peko was performed in a 3 ft 6 in diameter, slurry fed, pilot plant roaster operated under autogenous conditions to produce calcines with desirable leaching properties. A 12 in. diameter, externally heated roaster, provided with a dry feed system, was also used.An account is given of important factors which influence roaster behaviour and performance, and the effects of operating variables on calcine composition and leaching properties are described. Due to copper ferrite formation, a maximum of approximately 50 per cent of the copper in the calcines may be in the form of CuO before the copper leach efficiency falls significantly below lOO' per cent. Recovery of gold by cyanidation of leach residues was consistently high and independent of roasting conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn traditional practice copper is produced by pyrometallurgical techniques when the ,copper minerals in the ore or concentrate are predominantly sulphides, and by hydrometallurgy when the minerals are oxidized. Copper smelting is most suited to large scale operations, and for many years small to medium size mines with sulphide orebodies have been interested ill; alternative processes.Since hydrometallurgical plants (ie. leaching and electrowinning plants) are essentially unitized, they may be scaled down in output without much loss in efficiency or increase in processing cost, and many proposals have been made for the application of this type of process following roasting of the sulphides to render the copper soluble. However, until the advent of fluidized roasting, it was not possible to control the roasting operations sufficiently precisely to produce calcines consistently of the required leaching characteristics.

The mining industry has undergone a profound and transformative shift in recent years, driven by the rapid advancement of emerging technologies such as automation, digitalisation, and electrification. These technological innovations have not only revolutionised operational efficiency and productivity but have also introduced an imperative need for new and innovative approaches to conducting mining activities. Specifically, the mines of the future face a new series of complex challenges when planning and developing greenfield or brownfield mining projects in the 21st century. These challenges include greater operational depths, higher seismicity levels, higher rock temperatures, increased environmental constraints and sustainability requirements, a higher degree of interoperability, lack of skilled workforce, and the need for sustainable and eco-friendly mining practices. Consequently, there is an essential need to formulate novel strategies and robust planning methodologies that re-evaluate how mines are planned, executed, and managed, from the early exploration stages to the post-mining era and the consequent uses of mine sites. This research focuses on identifying the factors influencing the implementation of modern technologies, such as autonomous machinery in mining operations, and their impact on mining method selection and longterm mine planning. The findings underscore a crucial need for a paradigm shift in how mines are planned and developed, going beyond mining method selection, which primarily focuses on geological and economic factors, and must evolve to incorporate the multifaceted implications of modern mining operations.
