Knowledge based applications are becoming important to Associated Manganese for efficiently dispatching ore of appropriate grades to customers on time. The G2 expert system shell has been used to develop blending and scheduling applications using a combination of object-oriented rule based, procedural, and heuristic approaches. The blending application, for example uses a heuristic approach for creating blends from thousands of small stacks of manganese ore of various grades and sizes, to meet customer specifications while fully exploiting the available inventory. Data capture and data warehousing have become important issues, and the Internet shows strong potential for distribution of pre-processed information.

The Bureau of Mines studied pressure changes in coal pillars by using encapsulated hydraulic pressure cells to measure relative changes in stress developed during mining. The data indicate that (1) abutment stresses were detected when the pillar line is within 42 to 100 feet, (2) vertical pressure increases as coal is mined in the pillars, (3) at first pressure is higher at the edge of the pillar than in the core, but as mining progresses, the higher pressure is measured in the core of the stump, and (4) in the two instances where lateral pressures were measured, they remained lower than the vertical pressures during pillar extraction. The data also indicate that the mean vertical pressure increase, 6P, in a pillar is roughly related to the percent of pillar extracted, A, by the empirical parabolic equation

"Introduction1N THE FALL of 1951, Peace River Allied Fort St. John No. 1 well was drilled in Lsd. 1, Section 9 Township 83, Range 18, West of the 6th Meridian, on the flats of the north side of Peace river, six miles southeast of the village of Fort St. John, B.C. During this operation, non-commercial shows gas in three zones and of oil in one zone were obtained during the drill-stem tests. Further geological study indicated that this well was on the southeastern edge of the Fort St. St. John structure.Pacific Fort St. John No. 4, drilled shortly afterwards, obtained possible commercial gas flows on drill-stem test in five zones and thus encouraged development of what has become Canada's largest multizone gas field.In general, the productive horizons in this area possess fair per-meabilities and high porosities, a combination which provides for high reserves and moderate productivities. Development to date has therefore stressed experimental techniques in drilling and completion practice to provide high deliverability wells.Data and information of a specific nature apply, in all cases, to the pools in the Fort St. John structure."

Campbell,' in 1896 said: "The Birmingham district in Alabama has certain great advantages for there are few places in the world where fuel and ore are so near together, although, unfortunately, both are of inferior quality; the ore being low in iron and high in phosphorus and the coal giving a weak and impure coke." This statement could not have been questioned in 1894, but by 1896 several Robinson-Ramsay washers had been put into operation and weak and impure coke was a thing of the past. The Warrior coal field of Alabama contains six seams that yield coking coal of excellent quality. In descending order, they are Brookwood, Milldale, Pratt, America, Mary Lee, and Black Creek. In each of these, however, bands of rock and bone coal of varying thickness are stratified with the coal; and while some of these impurities can be separated from the coal by the miner, much of it must be loaded out with the coal. Consequently, unless the coal is washed before being coked, it will yield a coke of varying ash and sulfur content quite unsatisfactory for blastfurnace use. At present, the Gulf States Steel Co. is producing run-of-mine coal at its Virginia mine, from the America seam, that is uniformly low enough in ash to permit of coking without washing, but this is the only exception to the above statement. Alabama was the first state to experiment seriously with coal washers, was the first to install washers on a large scale and, up to the present, has maintained the lead. The Alabama State Mine Inspector reports that during 1923 20,919,303 tons of bituminous coal was mined in Alabama; 12,858,499 tons of which was delivered to coal washers for treatment.

"Over the years, mathematical modeling has been established as a viable tool for design and analysis of melting and solidification processes. Modeling of electromagnetic casting and melting systems involves three coupled problems -- determination of the containment field, the shape of the meniscus, and the temperature field -- which have to be solved simultaneously. One of the difficulties in numerical simulation of these systems is in defining and gridding the solution domain as the meniscus shape of the liquid region is not known a priori. This paper describes a methodology for solving these coupled problems in a two-dimensional electromagnetic containment field. This method is based on the solution of the electromagnetic, free surface dynamic, and heat transfer equations in a fixed domain in computational space by mapping the physical space into an invariant computational space during the search for the equilibrium shape using a variable non-orthogonal coordinate transformation. This approach, also, eliminates the need for regridding the liquid and solid regions during phase change. This methodology is demonstrated for two electromagnetic confinement systems -- the Magnetic Suspension Melting process and the electromagnetic casting of aluminum. The model predictions are in good agreement with available data for these systems. It is suggested that the methodology presented here is likely to provide a useful tool in the design, analysis, and optimization of electromagnetic confinement systems. It is generally recognized that the usefulness of modeling to study the interplay between the various process parameters without resorting to extensive experimentation relies heavily on accurate representation of the physical phenomena in these systems. In modeling electromagnetic confinement casting and melting systems, it is important that the model address all aspects of electromagnetic field interaction with the metal, if accurate predictions are to be obtained /3/. The electromagnetic field affects the heat transfer phenomena primarily through joule heating. In addition, the electromagnetic forces play a key role in heat redistribution in the molten pool via melt stirring, and, in confinement systems, support the molten metal pool."

ONE of the most important developments in the coal industry during 1940 was the continued uptrend in the production of bituminous coal. Estimated production for the year is 450,000,000 tons, with an additional production of anthracite of 50,000,000 tons making a total of approximately 500,000,000 tons. This is an increase of 12.5 per cent over 1939. Despite an estimated decrease of about 3.5 per cent in anthracite production, all of the major coal-producing states had increases in production for 9140. The national defense program, with the consequent increase in industrial activity, undoubtedly had an important effect on the increased demand for coal.

In todayÆs marketplace, with high metals prices, many operations are faced with the challenge of improving recovery in the particle size ranges which are normally difficult to recover. This presentation focuses on the various methods used to alter the flow dynamics in a mechanical flotation cell, thereby improving metallurgical results. Modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools have been used in the design phase, with subsequent validation at the plant. Some of the validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up. This presentation underlines how modern CFD analysis can be used to screen and select different approaches before commencing costly trial-and-error experiments at plant scale. Two methods of affecting flow dynamics are discussed û firstly, by altering the geometry of the rotor-stator area and, secondly, by fitting additional features in the tank. The rotor-stator area can be modified to provide more concentrated turbulent kinetic energy or, respectively, to provide more pumping efficiency with less attrition. The tank can be fitted with various additional features, aimed to create different particle suspension profiles. The benefit of both methods is that they can be applied not only to newly installed flotation technology, but also to existing plant cells, thus enabling potential improvement in the mixing profiles, solids suspension, tank sanding and metallurgical performance. Results of several sitesÆ tests are discussed in terms of flow variables measurement as well as metallurgy. This paper demonstrates the effects of different flow dynamics on the mixing profiles and metallurgical results of existing mechanical flotation cells.

This paper presents a unique stirred milling technology, Outotec HIGmill™, a modern, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding being tested in an industrial scale level. The test was performed at an iron ore pellet producing plant in Sweden (for confidentiality reasons, it will be referred to only as “the client”) where a pilot HIGmill™ unit (HIG25) was installed parallel to a conventional regrind circuit to compare its performance to the existing ball mill. By using a continuous test run procedure and evaluating the parameters of F80, P80, mill shaft rotation speed and power drawn it was determined its grinding capabilities, operational flexibility and energy efficiency. Outotec HIGmill™ outperformed the existing ball mill in the plant proving its capabilities to grinding finer, with steeper particle size distribution (PSD) and much higher energy efficiency. The tests performed showed that, with further refining of its operation, it is capable of consistently deliver the required PSD with up to 30% higher grinding efficiency.

Among the investigations that the Bureau of Mines is conducting witha view to increasing efficiency in the utilization of fuels belonging to or for the use of the Government is an investigation of the processesthat take place in a foundry cupola during a melt. Some observations on the results of cupola tests of cokes at the Government fuel-testing plant in St. Louis, Mo., the coke being fromcoal from many coal fields of the United States, have been stated in a previous bulletin.s Especial attention was given to the meltinglosses that resulted from the use of different grades of coke, light and porous or heavy and dense. These losses amounted in one instance to 52.5 per cent of the iron charged and showed, in convincing manner, the need of exact information in regard to conditions in the fuelbed of the cupola.b Melting losses of iron have been fully appreciated but little under-- stood. The fact that these losses were possible with either light or heavy coke led to the belief that by using small charges 80 placed that. melting would take place in that zone of the cupola where the highest heat and the smallest percentage of oxygen prevailed and by confiningall melting to this zone these losses would be eliminated and the economical use of practically any coke produced for metallurgical purposes would become possible. This widening of the field from whichcoke might be drawn for foundry purposes would serve to place the foundryman in an independent position as regards his source of supply, and would tend to conserve the better grades of coking coals, which are being rapidly exhausted, by making the poorer grades available for mixing with them. In order to investigate conditions within a cupola, the Bureau of Mines as a first step decided to install a commercial cupola, to sample the gases during their travel from the tuy~res upward, and to determine the temperature of the fuel bed.

The Lincoln Terminal System (LTS) is a stand-alone computerized training device that presents high quality visual displays, and audio messages to a student. A keyboard is provided for student input. A variety of student-machine interactive programs arc provided. These programs allow the author/instructor to evaluate numerical entries and responses to simple and compound multiple-choice questions (where a compound choice is defined to be more than one choice, ordered or unordered from one or more list(s) of choices. Descriptions of LTS applications, lesson development procedures, hardware provided and support facilities required are given. A contract history summary, and a bibliography of reports published under three successive BoM contracts supporting LTS development, is provided.

In 2009, Peter Munro and Peter Tilyard examined the “human capital” in the mineral processing sector in a paper entitled Back to the Future (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). One of their major concerns was a general decline in technical skills and process knowledge, exacerbated by lack of appreciation of the impact this can have on process plant performance and, ultimately, profitability or sustainability of the industry. There are many reasons for this decline, not least of which are the work schedules of today’s metallurgists which have a very different balance between technical and non-technical responsibility than those in the past. However, a shift towards a more technical focus has potential to deliver a range of benefits for industry at large and for the individuals in it This paper discusses some options for development of core metallurgical and process engineering skills that can be used by graduates, employers and training providers.Key skills are identified and mapped against available opportunities for development, such as existing graduate programs, on-the job training and external courses. The authors also review a number of past and present high-quality graduate development programs, including the graduate development program in place at Mount Isa Mines in the 1980s and the Anglo Platinum Graduate Development Program (AGDP) currently operating in South Africa.

Some operational difficulties have been encountered in the transfer of carbon-in-pulp technology to Australian conditions. Many gold mines? are located in remote and arid areas where the available ground water is highly saline. There is a gradual depletion of free milling oxidised gold ore reserves resulting in the necessity to treat deeper primary sulphide .deposits which can be refractory. Some near-surface ore-bodies and tailing dumps are contaminated by natural vegetative matter which can interfere with the adsorption of gold from the cyanided pulp,. Advances which have been? made include potable water conservation in elution, a new type of regeneration kiln, inter-stage screens, alternative leaching systems transportable carbon-in-pulp plants and efficient open-cut mining methods. Academic and applied research is well supported by government and industry and the results are normally rapidly disseminated and put into practice by the gold mining industry.

This paper is one of a series describing methods and costs of recovering sand and gravel from alluvial deposits in the United States and deals directly with the methods employed by the Portland Gravel Co. in operating a clamshell dredge on the Willamette River near Portland, Oreg., and a pump dredge on the Columbia River near Vancouver, Wash. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs may in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

"Minera Escondida operates two open pits on a porphyry copper district, southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. During 2005, ore will be delivered exclusively from one pit to two concentrators, while from 2006 both pits will provide ore to these plants. Annual testing programmes on drillhole samples, have allowed for the construction of hardness block models since 2000. These models have delivered two main hardness descriptors, the Bond work index and the SAG power index. These parameters and plant operational specifications have been used as input information to forecast, the expected throughput and ball mill product size (P80) for each block of ore. Two forecasting techniques have been used, an in house model, strongly dependant of bond work index and MinnovEx´s CEET2, dependant of Bond work index and Sag power index and other parameters. Model performance has been evaluated from reconciliating on a monthly basis, the forecasted throughputs against a recalculated plant throughput which accounts for losses in tonnage not caused by ore hardness but instead by unscheduled plant operation problems. The model performance for 2003 was ± 2% yearly and ± 5% quarterly, well within the expected ± 3% and ± 10%. As NI 43-101 is law in Canada, the SEC allows mineral resources and mineral reserves prepared under CIM Definition Standards for issuers that are reporting in Canada but are also registered with the SEC. The SEC places conditions on the disclosure of these estimates. US shareholders are cautioned that the requirements under NI 43-101 and the CIM Definition Standards differ significantly from those of Industry Guide 7.Note: this Guide contains the Commission's basic mining disclosure policy. The definitions and disclosure instructions contained in this Guide apply to all public mining entities and their public disclosures pursuant to the rules of Regulation S-K. "Considering overgrinding in a grinding process, the grinding characteristics of comminuted hematite products using a HPGR and a conventional CC were comparatively studied. The major properties including particle size, grinding kinetics and grinding technical efficiency (Et) were investigated. Individual size distributions (ISDs) of -2.0mm in a HPGR product showed a more significant “double-peak” characteristic than a CC product. As a result, HPGR products were finer and had a wider full-size distribution because of the greater proportion of fines. The parameters m and zi in m-th order grinding kinetics were analyzed by the partial-derivative method and the critical time tc(tc = exp (1/ zi)) was obtained. zi mainly affected the breakage rate when t < tc; otherwise, m mainly affected the breakage rate. In these tests, tc was considerably higher than the grinding times, and HPGR products yielded a higher zi-value than the CC product for the same sieve size. This indicated that HPGR products had a higher breakage rate and needed a shorter grinding time for a certain grinding fineness. Et was calculated by simulating the size distributions of batch grinding products. HPGR products gave a lower Et at a decreasing rate than the CC products for -2.0 mm feed and -0.5mm feed, and then showed a slightly higher Et for -2.0+0.5 mm feed. This indicated that overginding in HPGR full-size products was more serious under the condition of coarse grinding, whereas the efficiency was higher and overgrinding weakened significantly in HPGR coarse products because of screening-out fines. Based on the above research, a new process of “ultra-crushing in HPGR – classified grinding” was advanced, reducing ores tonnage into first stage ball mill significantly, improving grinding efficient and weakening overgrinding in the whole grinding process.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, comminution accounts for a substantial portion (approximately 60~70%) of the energy consumed in plants. As an ultra-fine crushing equipment,the application of the HPGR for industrial comminution has been paid close attention because of its low specific energy, low steel consumption, high capacity and high ratio of reduction, among others (Schonert, 1998; Norgate & Weller, 1994; Fuerstenau & Kapur, 1995). HPGRs comprise two counter-rotating rolls that draw feed material into the roll gap. One roll is fixed to the mainframe, while the other movable roll is mounted on slides and positioned by hydraulic rams. The specific pressing force (SPF) (i.e., total force divided by projected roller area) is typically in the range of 3~9 N/mm2 depending on the application, while pressures of up to 1000 N/mm2 have been measured within the operating gap (Maxton , Morley, & Bearman , 2003)."

I am Alfred E. Michon, Vice President- International for Burlington Northern Inc. I work for BN&apos;s holding company and my responsibilities include co-ordinating the activities of our eight subsidiary companies as they relate to international commerce--an increasingly important aspect of the overall business of our company. Until last April, I was President of the Fort Worth and Denver and Colorado and Southern railroads, subsidiaries of BN. Prior to that, I headed the marketing and pricing area of BN&apos;s coal transportation business. Based on my experience in the energy industry, both domestic and international, I would like to discuss the world-wide trend towards the reliance on low-sulfur coal in lieu of natural gas and oil for the generation of electricity. Since pontification on the energy scene world- wide is best left to consultants with scenario-spitting computers, let me in- stead emphasize this trend through two examples. First I will describe the regulatory and economic factors which have encouraged the replacement of natural gas by low sulfur coal as a boiler fuel in the US. BN&apos;s investments in track and equipment were instrumental in this conversion. Secondly, I will show how this same combination of factors has created a large demand for steam coal in the Far East. Again, our company&apos;s strategy is to facilitate conversion to coal overseas through timely and sufficient investments.

Balanced development of mining works at all the benches of a working zone by use of the excavator-automobile complex is achieved by transition to the technology of the bench excavating with cross panels by the two-sub-bench scheme with the changing levels of the working platforms (is patented in Kazakhstan). In deep quarries realization of this technology will allow to reduce the current volumes of the stripping ore excavation by 10?15 % and more, to increase the opened reserves of minerals by 20?50 % to decrease volume of mining-capital works for construction of stripping excavations by 2?4 times and to provide efficient use of powerful excavator-automobile complexes.

This paper presents a novel holistic healthy human framework for C-suite executives and senior leaders in the minerals industry. The value-add of the framework centres around the integration of inner holistic health and interpersonal holistic health to support and enhance environment, social, and governance transformation, with a focus on the social enterprise. The framework unpacks key components of holistic health and their interlinkages to environment, social, governance, and stakeholder engagement. Insights were gleaned from interviews with 10 C-suite executives, each with over twenty years of experience in mining or business leadership. By applying the holistic healthy human framework, industry leaders can strengthen the social licence to operate and positively transform the industry's public image. Broader application to other sectors is underway.
