The impact of the work of Herty "et al" on modern liquid steel technology can only be evaluated by first setting the stage as it existed in 1926. It is important to briefly review not only the steel making process and viewpoints regarding methods of refining, but also to describe the tools which were available for research at the time. One must recall that only 15 years before the beginning of this program, the open hearth production exceeded that of the Bessemer in the United States. Many open hearths were still operating on producer gas (a very inefficient fuel), although some plants were converting to the use of natural gas and very few to oil. Continuous rolling of wide strip started this year. The Faraday Society in England held a World Conference on Physical Chemistry in Steel Making in 1925 and the contributions to this work created considerable interest throughout the world and it appeared that physical chemistry might convert the art of steel making into a science. These papers, however, attempted to solve the problems through the use of the older physical chemical concepts such as Nernst's numbers, etc. and considerable data were missing. In 1923, Lewis and Randall had published their book Thermodynanzicsl and this was later to establish and standardize the steps which are now accepted for the calculation of physico-chemical equations. At the time this research work was started, there were no small high frequency induction furnaces. Fragmentation in sublevel caving (SLC) is vitally important. Both gravity flow and any downstream processes are affected. Reasonably coarse fragmentation may lead to larger draw bodies (isolated extraction zones) and hence potentially higher primary ore recovery and depressed/delayed waste rock inflow from above. Fewer flow disturbances are expected by mitigating oversize. In addition, it requires less boulder handling and reduces wear and possible hang-up problems in orepasses. To assess the present-day functionality of large-scale SLC, a multiyear, comprehensive measurement program was initiated. It covers the main elements for SLC, namely blast function, fragmentation and gravity flow. The present paper focuses on fragmentation measurements. An image acquisition system was used to document the drawpoint and the load-haul-dump (LHD) bucket for each mucking cycle. At the beginning, four buckets (about 70 t total) were sieved to validate the results of both 2D and 3D image analysis techniques. The fundamental and specific problems are discussed herein. At the moment, fragmentation of the SLC rings is evaluated using a quick rating system and a 2D fragment delineation software. The results enable a description of fragmentation and its variation during mucking but also – combined with the gravity flow measurements – conclusions on the fragmentation for different parts of the SLC ring. Possible influences on flow disturbances and ore recovery/dilution are investigated. Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies and miners as well as the dilution of mine air contaminants and must stay open for many years. In this study, standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled and instrumented by researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

Electroslag remelting (ESR) today and into the future, will still be the main process for producing high-quality ingots by suppressing segregation, not just refining chemical composition from impurities. This paper analyses state-of-the-art electroslag refining with a focus on ESR with consumable electrodes, and recent technology with liquid metal supply (ESR LM) in view of their refining abilities and development trends, taking into consideration that the size of the ingots required by industry continues to grow, and the composition of new materials sophisticates to withstand increasingly higher mechanical and temperature loads . The yield of suitable metal in large ingots produced by conventional casting is low due to problems of element segregation by height and crosssection. For example, conventional ingots for nuclear powerplant rotors today reach nearly 700 t in weight. Attempts to directly replace such giant ingots with big-diameter ESR ingots weighing approximately 400 t were also unsuccessful because of growing segregation. Modern ESR equipment and technologies produce 200–250 t of ingots of satisfactory quality, reaching 2.5 m in diameter, implementing the change of consumable electrodes during remelting to increase ingot length. Another way to mitigate segregation is to enlarge the smaller diameter ESR ingot by a 500– 800 mm coaxial layer to the desirable diameter by ESR in the current-supplying mould (CSM). Modelling and experiments prove that refining from impurities and non-metallic inclusions at ESR most effectively occurs at the slag bath and liquid metal pool interface because the ESR LM has provided the same desulfurisation. ESR’s special refining capabilities in CSM come from the much longer time of LM residence shown at titanium purification from hard-melting nitride inclusions that are unremovable in vacuum arc remelting (VAR) and electron beam melting (EBM). Implementation of ESR technologies in CSM, especially with LM supply, is prospective to produce heavy enlarged and hollow forging ingots with prevented development of segregation due to dividing cross-section and reducing overheat of solidifying metal.

Carbonizing properties of the principal coalbeds of Elk, Clarion, Jefferson, Clearfield, and Centre Counties, Pa,, are described in this Bureau of Mines report, Twenty-six samples, representing the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, and Brookville beds, were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines--American Gas Association (BM-AM) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Expansion or contraction of the majority of the samples was measured in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Chemical analyses, agglutinating values, and free-swelling indexes are given for all samples. In this area the coals generally are characterized by high sulfur and moderately high ash content, and their suitability for metallurgical use would depend largely upon satisfactory cleaning. The samples from Elk, Clarion, and Jefferson Counties were high-volatile A bituminous In rank, whereas, most samples from Clearfield County and all those from Centre County were of medium-volatile rank. Coals from Clarion County had dry, mineral- matter-free fixed-carbon contents ranging from 56.5 to 60.3 percent and were weakly coking. With the exception of two samples which contained excessive ash, the medium-volatile coals of Clearfield and Centre Counties were strongly coking and, as indicated by sole-oven expansion results, would require blending with lower rank coal to avoid oven damage.

"The objective of this project was to investigate the application of Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology to provide real-time on-belt elemental analysis of feed ore in base metal sulphide processing, in this case at the Mount Isa Mines Zinc-Lead Concentrator Heavy Medium Plant (HMP). After initial exploratory testwork proved successful, a Geoscan On-Belt Elemental Analyser was retrofitted onto the existing HMP feed conveyor. Dynamic calibration of the Geoscan was conducted based on laboratory XRF analysis results of the HMP feed conveyor hammer autosampler samples from May to November 2013. Comparison of the Geoscan results to the laboratory XRF analysis results during and after dynamic calibration indicated the technology had acceptable accuracy to be incorporated into HMP process control. The variation between the two sets of data includes all primary sampling, sample preparation and XRF analysis errors as well as the Geoscan errors themselves. The Geoscan instrument precision must be calculated separately through a duplicate sampling campaign and independent laboratory analysis before extending the scope of its range of application beyond HMP process control. The expected benefits of integrating the Geoscan real-time data into HMP process control are optimised HMP metal recovery, improved cost efficiency and improved stability of the downstream processes (milling and flotation). Utilisation of the Geoscan will also enable improved feedback to mines on grade control and dilution, and provide additional information on individual ore types when fed as campaigns to HMP."

Construction of buildings, roads, and traffic activities generate vibrations to urban infrastructure. The vibrations produced by construction activities have an impact on the soil through which they are transmitted. These effects become much more significant in granular soils. The soil conditions in Florida consist mainly of sandy soil deposits and this makes driven piles a commonly used method. In the design of deep foundation installations, it is significant to consider the potential construction issues related to the driving process. This process generates vibrations in the surrounding soils and thus, its effects on nearby soils and structures must be considered. This paper presents a web-based survey conducted among geotechnical engineers in Florida to better understand the common practice and experience regarding the effects of pile driving on surrounding soils and structures. The perception of different practitioners in the state of Florida on ground deformations and damages to adjacent structures induced by deep foundation installations are investigated. The engineers who have experienced ground vibrations and deformations were asked to define the susceptible soil conditions and main triggering factors of large ground deformations induced by pile driving. Sandy soils with loose to medium relative densities were found to be the most susceptible soil condition to generate ground deformations. Conclusions are drawn regarding the importance of considering ground vibration monitoring during the design phase of deep foundations.

This paper details the extensive underpinning required to hold up the 39th street Bridge while demolishing its massive support piers and building a 30ft deep Cut/ Cover RR tunnel beneath it. The underpinning/SOE support required the construction of 16 large hand dug pits 36ft deep that were reinforced and concrete filled. In addition, an extensive steel support system was tied into the bridge super structure. All of the underpinning/tunnel construction was done while a 110ton crane sat directly atop the heavily trafficked – 66 ft. wide bridge. The tunnel excavation, concrete lining and final bridge pier support work will also be presented. All work was done within 5ft of active mainline tracks and that required tight grouting behind all lagging to eliminate any track settlement.

TITANIUM is estimated to be the ninth most plentiful element, ranking after iron, aluminum, and magnesium, and ahead of copper, lead, and zinc. Vast quantities of titanium are widespread throughout the world in ore deposits and beach sands. Before the war, processing plants were operated in England, France, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Russia, Australia, United States, and Japan. In spite of its widespread occurrence, however, the U. S. Department of Justice has held the titanium industry to be a world monopoly and action was taken in the Federal court during the summer of 1945 to enjoin international patent and marketing agreements and to restore free competition. Possibly the rather surprising lack of public familiarity with this industry of international importance arises from its astonishingly rapid development and growth in the strong hands of some of the greatest chemical companies in the world, including the important foreign companies, Imperial Chemical Industries (British), Montecatini (Italian), I. G. Farben (German), and Titan Kogko Kabushiki Kaisha (Japanese). The rapid growth of the titanium industry in the United States is indicated by a tenfold increase of ore imports in the 1930 to 1940 decade before the war began to affect shipments from overseas. The fact that the industry formerly derived practically all ore for chemical processing in American plants from foreign sources probably also accounts for lack of general public knowledge of titanium. In 1939, to meet the requirements of increasing demand for the white pigment. titanium dioxide, more than 250,000 tons of titanium concentrates moved to this country, principally from the Travancore coast of India where the ilmenite concentrate from the beach sand runs as high as 60 per cent in titanium dioxide. Global warfare put a stop to shipping and thus gave rise to the development of titanium mining on a substantial scale in the United States during 1941.

This paper describes the new iron and steelmaking process recently commissioned at NZ Steel. Ironsand mined and concentrated at Waikato North head is slurry pumped 18 km to the company's Glenbrook works. Ironmaking includes the direct reduction process pioneered at Glenbrook in the 1970s and a new continuous electric melter. The molten, high carbon pig iron produced is then fed to a vanadium recovery unit and on to the KOBM oxygen steelmaking vessel. Steel is cast into billets or slabs. The new plant, which is the first stage of a fully integrated works at Glenbrook, raises New Zealand Steel's production capacity from 150 000 t/y to 750 000 t/y.

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Maricunga mine in Chile presents an ideal opportunity to apply the SART process to a heap leach operation. Given increasing levels of cyanide complexed copper in current pregnant solutions from Maricunga heaps (over 300 ppm Cu), there is a need to reduce these levels and decrease cyanide consumption and cost. Additionally, a means of disposing of this copper is required, preferably as a saleable product. The well published SART process applied to gold-copper cyanide solutions was selected as it allows rapid precipitation of cyanide soluble copper as a relatively pure copper sulphide. The process also allows effective recovery and recycle of cyanide back to the heap leach operation.This paper reviews the SART process chemistry and presents a summary of SART bench-scale and pilot plant testwork completed by Kinross. Key design parameters and engineering aspects of the proposed plant at Maricunga are discussed. SART plant operating costs and net revenue analysis are included and illustrate the compelling economics of installing a SART process plant. Presented in this report are the experimental results of coarse coal slurry degradation data obtained from the Hydraulic Transport Research Facility (HTRF) at the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC), Bruceton, PA. This particle degradation report is a summary of the particle distribution data obtained at the HTRF for the period 26 November 1982 to 1 October 1983. The testing covered herein is for coarse Pittsburgh Seam coal in the 6-in (150 mm) and 12-in (300 mm) pipelines, at velocities ranging from 5 to 18 ft/s (1.5 to 5.5 m/s), and at concentrations by weight ranging from 15 to 55 pet. Particle size distribution samples were taken systematically throughout the testing.

The AMIRA International P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) project is an interdisciplinary research collaboration between 17 global mineral companies and four research organisations aimed at providing support for the emerging industry trend of geometallurgy. The main aim of the project is to develop predictive geometallurgical indices which can be incorporated into a resource block model to maximise the commercial value of an orebody and to minimise the social and environmental impact of mining operations.Researchers at the Parker Centre/CSIRO have been focusing on the development of predictive hydrometallurgical indices for the GeMIII project via rapid, small-scale, cost-effective tests and protocols for comparative ranking of attributes relevant to leach performance. The focus of the small-scale leach tests has been to determine the leach index (relative indication of leach performance), recovery, impurity deportment, reagent consumption, effect of size/degree of liberation and mineralogy of samples for their relative ranking. Predictive tests for heap leach hydrology (related to agglomerate characteristics) and slurry rheological behaviour are also being developed.

"Komatsu has been on the cutting edge of autonomous mining for the past 30 years and the company remains at the forefront of the technology that is changing from concept to a full-fledged reality.In 1996, Komatsu America Corp. (KAC) purchased a controlling interest in Modular Mining Systems; a move that enabled both companies to expand their product lines. It was through this effort that Modular helped to deploy the first autonomous haulage system (AHS) — the Komatsu FrontRunner system. In January 2008, the first commercial implementation of the FrontRunner system occurred at Codelco’s copper mine in Chile. Since then, Komatsu has put more than 130 haul trucks into seven sites on three continents to haul copper, iron ore and oil sands and its equipment has moved 1.8 Gt (2 billion st) of material with zero lost time incidents attributed to Komatsu’s autonomous trucks. The 1.8 Gt (2 billion st) is the most of any commercial mining autonomous haulage system and there is more to come. In November, Komatsu announced that an additional 150 autonomous haul trucks will be deployed to the Canadian oil sands over the next seven years.Komatsu has continued to pioneer autonomous haulage development, creating a range of autonomous options that includes semiautonomous and teleremote options all the way up to a haulage vehicle that stole the show at the world’s largest mining equipment trade show.In 2016, Komatsu advanced the concept of driverless haul truck to a new level when it displayed its Innovative Autonomous Haulage Vehicle (IAHV) at MINExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The concept vehicle is the first mega class haul truck designed to be fully autonomous, without an operators’ cab included on the vehicle.Unlike other haul trucks, the vehicle was developed exclusively as an unmanned vehicle designed to maximize the advantages of unmanned operation. Among other advancements, it was designed to distribute equal load to the four wheels, both when the vehicle is loaded and unloaded, and adopt four-wheel drive, retarder and steering. Komatsu said it is aiming for high-performance shuttling of this vehicle in both forward and reverse travel directions, thereby eliminating the need for K-turns at loading and unloading sites."

While costs of most commodities and services have increased markedly over the past 25 years, the cost of electricity has steadily declined. One of the reasons for this price decline is the improved efficiencies of generating plants which is shown in Fig. 1. 1,2 Another reason for this is the decline in coal production costs. Efficiencies for the best plant increased from about 32 percent in 1540 to about 40 percent in 1962 and then decreased slightly to 38 percent in 1965. The increase in efficiency for all plants (US average) has been even more notable, progressing from less than 15 percent in 1940 to about 32 percent in 1965. The chief reason for the improved efficiency is the change in operating steam temperatures. These increased about 12 F per year until 1200 F was reached in 1962. At this high temperature excessive corrosion of super-heater and reheater tubes was experienced and steam temperatures were dropped back to 1050 F and even 1000 F in some cases. To successfully compete against other energy sources for generating electricity, this corrosion problem must be solved so that operation at higher temperatures and thus, increased efficiencies will be possible.

The mine and mill of the Davis-Dunkirk Lines, Inc., are about 16 miles by road south of Prescott, Ariz., which is the nearest railroad point for receiving mine and mill supplies and for shipping concentrates to smelters. A good trucking road reaches within 2 miles off the property, but from that point the grade is very steep. Outgoing loads are limited to 2 tons. The topography near the mine is exceedingly rugged, and the area is slightly wooded. The climate is mild excepting in a few winter months, when the snowfall is heavy. Electric power is secured by way of a 4 1/2-mile, high-tension line connecting with the main line of the Arizona Power Co. The concentrator was intended to treat 60 tons or more daily of gold-silver-copper ore and make a single gold-silver-copper concentrate for shipment to a copper smelter.

This report covers the activities of a feasibility study of fiber optics technology fur use in mines. The objective of the study was to evaluate, both technically and cost-wise, the possible use of fiber optic technology for underground mine communication and monitoring systems. The first phase of the study was devoted to the collection of information on the present underground mine communication systems and monitoring techniques, and the status of applicable fiber optic technology. In the second ph se of the study, a communication and monitoring system for a hypothetical underground coal mine was designed and the costs estimated. The significant findings and conclusions are presented.

"Language barrier in a workplace affects workers’ productivity and safety. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) review the various approaches for breaking language barriers among miners; and (2) analyze the costs and benefits of these approaches, and make recommendations on the way forward. The authors achieve these objectives by reviewing the current approaches in breaking language barriers among miners. The review reveals that some of these approaches can be expensive with less benefits. Thus, it is concluded that mining companies should carefully select the optimal approach to break language barrier. INTRODUCTION Multi-national mining companies have expanded their operations into non-traditional mining destinations to grow and meet market expectations. For instance, Newmont Mining Corporation has about 14 operations and projects located in Africa, Asia, Australia and America (Newmont Mining Corporation Operations and Projects, 2015). Similarly, Freeport-McMoRan operates about 14 mines in North America, South America, Southern Asia, and Africa (Freeport-McMoRan Inc., 2015). Some mining companies have also attracted expatriate workers into their workforce. For example, Ma’aden, the Saudi Arabian mining company, in its 2013 annual report states that 34% of its total employees are expatriates (Ma'aden, 2013). Expatriates constitute a key source of skilled labor and facilitate skill transfer. The success of many international operations relies greatly on expatriate performance (Erbacher, D'Netto & Espana, 2006). Even companies that do not expand their operations into other foreign countries still have to deal with language barriers due to changing language demography of the country and the areas from which labor is sourced. For example, the language composition of the workforce and languages used in South African mines is diverse with miners proficient in Afrikaans, English, Zulu, Xhosa and others to varying degrees (Research Focus (Pty) Ltd, 2011). As a result of these trends, most mines today operate with a multinational workforce. This means cultural differences, including language barriers, exist among the miners. Marschan-Piekkari, Welch and Welch (1999) emphasize the fact that language problems become prominent as companies internationalize and grow their operations into more countries. According to a survey by Forbes, language barrier affects operations. For example, business owners acknowledge that language proficiency may promote a safer work environment (Rubin, 2011). A research has shown that language and cultural barriers in a workplace contributes to reducing workers’ productivity, increasing accidents, and hurts employers’ ability to recruit, hire and retain workers (Morris, 2002). Hence, mines are making efforts to break language barriers in their operating environments. Ma’aden, for instance reported in 2013 that 1,506 of its employees received training in English as a second language (Ma'aden, 2013)."
