It has been stated, by Sir James M. Barrie, that "the man of science appears to be the only man who has something to say, just now-and the only man who does not know how to say it". The friendly jibe of the novelist contains enough exaggeration to make it humorous to the followers of Huxley and Spencer; but could any litterateur poke similar fun at the exponents of the avowedly utilitarian branches of science-the men of technology-without suggesting an unpleasant truth? Indeed the engineer does bungle language deplorably. He makes a fetish of efficiency, yet he shows no regard for the effective use of one of his most important tools-the pen; he believes devoutly in accuracy, yet he employs an instrument of precision as carelessly as a small boy handles a gun. This inconsistency may be due to causes such as were indicated by the Academic Senate when it undertook to explain the defective writing of the; students in this university.* The Senate suggested that the student is "constantly subjected by his environment to the unedifying influence of myriad examples of poor English", and that he is also affected by "a certain public prejudice against correctness of expression ". With these statements most of us will agree. Our local newspapers, for instance, tend to spoil the student's taste for good English; later in life, as an engineer, his daily contact with illiterate men inclines him to careless speech and slovenly writing. The principal causes of many methane-gas explosions that have occurred in anthracite mines, especially in thick pitching veins, during recent years can be traced to lack of a satisfactory method of testing for such gas in areas adjacent to those in which blasting is to be done or other sources of ignition introduced. As coal-mine officials and inspectors are required to make examinations for methane in all accessible open workings, including high places, and permissible flame safety lamps have been used almost universally for making these examinations, considerable difficulty has been experienced in proper testing of atmospheres at elevations beyond the normal reach of the examiner, and resultant explosions have often indicated perfunctory tests. The accepted practice of testing for gas in voids or high places generally consists of raising a flame safety lamp, suspended from the end of a long drill, stick, or pipe, into the atmosphere to be tested. Disadvantages noted are: Action of the flame within the lamp cannot be seen readily when the lamp is more then 18 inches overhead, the flame will not be extinguished when less than about 4-1/2 percent of methane is present, and indications of small percentages of methane within the lamp may disappear entirely while the lamp is being lowered slowly to view; the examiner must usually be exposed unnecessarily to falling material; and the lamp may fall and be broken. Thus, the need for a more reliable, safe method of testing for gas in out-of-reach places is apparent. Several electrical methane detectors, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines, have been used satisfactorily, though infrequently, for making the aforementioned gas tests. Some of these detectors employ a rubber aspirator bulb and rubber tubing of suitable length to draw the atmosphere from high places through and over energized parts of the detector. However, the original expense, susceptibility to damage, and awkwardness of tarrying these instruments in steep-pitch workings has precluded their general use in everyday examinations. Although not as efficient as the electrical detector for determining small percentages of methane or as reliable because of the limitations imposed by oxygen-deficient atmospheres, the modern per¬missible flame safety lamp can, it is believed, be used safely with the rubber aspirator bulb and tubing to greater advantage and with comparative reliability in testing for gas in out-of-reach places. Slight reference to this method of introducing air into a safety lamp is made in a Bureau of Mines publication of l921,2/ and it is quite possible that the method has been utilized in some manner by individuals in American mines during the intervening years. A similar method was used in connection with a nonpermissible Wolf flame safety lamp in at least one coal mine in Japan before World War II. "INTRODUCTION The Shatin to Central Link (SCL) is a new rail line being constructed by the MTR Corporation for the Government of Hong Kong to cater for the growing passenger demand between the North-East New Territories and the urban areas of the city. Contract 1103, which will provide the 4 km of running tunnels between the new Hin Keng and Diamond Hill Stations, was tendered in a design-build framework and awarded to Vinci Construction Grands Projets (VCGP) in October 2012, with Arup as Vinci’s lead designer. One of the most challenging pieces of work on the contract involved the construction of 133m of SEM mined tunnel on the northern end of the project. The Northern Mined Section (NMS) is an undrained, twin-track, single bore profile, broken out through the southern pipe pile wall of the Hin Keng Station cut-and-cover box, Figure 1. The tunnel has maximum excavated dimensions of 14.5m span x 12m height, with track spacing of 6.175m. The general excavation sequence consisted of 3 stages; a 6m high top heading (73.1m2), followed by bench (27.3m2), and invert (26.7m2). A risk-based approach to the design was taken given the large variation in rock level, cover, and an active stream course above tunnel crown. Ultimately, six different temporary support types were utilized in order to optimize the construction process through continually changing ground while maintaining a safe and stable excavation. Three main support types were developed during the initial design phase, along with a “contingency” case, which utilized a partial heading excavation sequence and enhanced face support. The purpose of the contingency support type was to have a robust, engineered design available for immediate implementation should unexpected ground behavior develop, leading to the breaching of instrumentation trigger levels. This support type was never implemented on site. Drill- and-blast tunneling commenced once 6m of rock cover was verified through forward probing. A robust instrumentation and monitoring scheme provided valuable data throughout excavation and the means to carry out a geotechnical back-analysis of the ground behavior and support performance."

The truck haulage data from open-pit mine sites are usually massive and multidimensional with multi-peak Gaussian distributions. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are well-known machine learning algorithms to handle massive and multidimensional data for building models. Moreover, Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM) is a suitable option for processing the data under multi-peak Gaussian distributions and improving model accuracy. For the first time, this study used a back propagation neural network (BPNN), an extreme learning machine (ELM), and a Bayesian regularized neural network (BRNN) coupled with GMM to deal with the complex truck haulage data and build three weighted ensemble models (WE-BPNN, WE-ELM, and WE-BRNN models) to predict truck productivity at mine sites. Decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were used to build models to be compared with the weighted ensemble models. The results showed that the WE-BRNN had a higher accuracy than the WE-BPNN and WE-ELM models. The proposed weighted ensemble models performed better than the benchmark models in predicting truck productivity, indicating that a weighted ensemble approach based on the GMM analysis significantly improved the model accuracy. Based on the relative importance analysis, haul distance was the most crucial input variable for predicting truck productivity. This study provides a new approach to predicting truck productivity, which will help mining companies make sound budget decisions and improve mine planning.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s(NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), RAG Pennsylvania and Strata Control Technologies of Australia have collaborated to conduct an extensive study of roof bolt strata interaction at the Emerald mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The primary goal of the project was to obtain detailed data on the interaction between the mine roof and the support elements for use in modeling studies. The study site was a longwall tailgate subjected to high horizontal stress. Three arrays of instruments were installed at the site, one in the tail-gate entry and two in an adjacent crosscut. Pumpable concrete cribs were present in the tailgate array, and cable bolts were installed in one of the crosscut arrays. The instruments included mechanical and sonic extensometers for measuring roof movement, instrumented roof bolts, and three-dimensional roof stress cells. The study was ultimately successful in determining the magnitude of the horizontal stress concentration, the height of roof failure and the roof failure sequence, and the loading history of the primary roof supports.

ShouSteel Mining Ltd., a subsidiary of ShouSteel (Group) Co., was founded in 1959 and is located in QianAn City in Hebei Province, China. ShouSteel?s pelletizing plant uses iron ore as a raw material combined with limestone, dolostone, or olivine, with bentonite as a binder. After mixing the raw materials and forming them into small, spherical balls, ShouSteel then fires pellets in kilns for hardening. The company sells the finished pellets as raw materials for blast furnaces used to produce industrial metals such as iron. ShouSteel?s handling capacity is approximately 24.5 Mt/a (27 million stpy) of ore. The company?s production capacity is 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of oxide pellets and 560 Mt (650 million st) of sinters. Until recently, ShouSteel Mining had not replaced its electronic scales in its series of ingredient chambers. Because of the wear and tear on these older scales, the weighing system began to encounter regular problems. The company experienced a high failure rate from the integrator, an unstable signal, weak anti-interference ability and low accuracy. ShouSteel also found that spare parts required during repairs were consistently high in cost and that system calibration was becoming increasingly frequent.

Nuisance caused by perceived high vibration levels as a result of blasting on quarries and opencast coal mine is now the number one environmental concern of residents living adjacent to such operations. The intrinsic nature of blast vibration monitoring and prediction is that it is impossible to accurately forecast the vibration levels that will be experienced by a given blast at a given location. Thus it is that a statistical approach to the problem is the only viable option. Unfortunately, persuading local residents living adjacent to a project that requires blasting that this is the best way of safe guarding both their homes and their quality of life is not an easy task. Thus routine monitoring involving both operators and regulators play a key role in building trust. However, public confidence is often shaken when regulators and operators use two different blast monitoring instruments side by side to record a blast at a local resident’s house and arrive at different results. To make certain that this does not happen in future, what is needed is a protocol that ensures that any two different blasting seismographs give the same peak particle velocity values at the same observation point. To do this all the equipment manufacturers, regulators and relevant professional explosive engineering bodies need to be involved.

As part of the goal to maximize minerals and metals recovery from primary domestic resources, design factors associated with minimizing current leakage in bipolar cell configurations were studied by the Bureau of Mines as a means of improving the efficiency of bipolar e1ectrooxidation cells. Initial studies that were conducted in a small bipolar cell operating at 140 to 145 volts and 15.4 amp indicated how design factors could be employed to minimize cur-rent leakage around adjacent electrodes during cell operation. Based on these results, a 40-electrode, 108-kva prototype of an industrial-sized cell was constructed and tested for extracting metal values from offgrade molybdenite concentrates. The feasibility of recovering molybdenum and rhenium from the oxidized pulp also was determined. Feed to the process sequence consisted of flotation concentrates containing 16 to 35 pet Mo as molybdenite and 6 to 15 pct Cu. E1ectrooxidation in the prototype cell resulted in 84 to 97 pct Mo and Re extraction with a corresponding energy consumption of 9 to 13 kwhr/1b Mo extracted.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has had an ongoing interest in developing new reagent schemes for floating Stillwater, MT, chromite ore. Previous reagent schemes have been unsuccessful in achieving complete separation, primarily because little is known about the surface chemistry of the minerals in this ore. In order to design a rational reagent scheme, a study of the binding of various functional groups (R = -H, -OH, -CO2H, -NH2) on the two components (chromite and forsterite) of the Stillwater chromite was undertaken. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectroscopy was used to determine the adsorption isotherm, from a cyclohexane solution, of spin-probes which contained the functional group of interest. This was complemented by studies of the saturation surface coverage of the spin probe on the two minerals. In each case, more sites existed on chromite than forsterite; however, the forsterite sites were more strongly binding for each functional group. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for flotation.

The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists seven beds that are being mined in Mingo County, of which the Cedar Grove is the most important. The Cedar Grove, Alma, and Coalburg contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,007 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 2,396 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

Premature failure of armoured face conveyor (AFC) chains due to corrosion is a significant proportion of the unplanned downtime experienced on longwall equipment. The AFC chains are constantly in contact with water and wet coal. The premature failure issue of AFC chains has become more prominent since the introduction of longwall top-coal caving with its additional AFC. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a popular water treatment method for reducing salinity and dissolved solids, but its impact on the corrosion of the AFC chains is unclear. This study has been commissioned to investigate the direct effects of RO water on the corrosion of AFC chains. An immersion test was carried out using AFC chain steel submerged in two water samples: untreated dam water and treated water from an RO treatment plant. Elemental analysis was conducted for both water samples, and four corrosion indices were measured for both water samples. The RO water more vigorously dissolves calcium carbonate scales leading to increased corrosion of the AFC chains although the dam water has much higher levels of calcium, chloride, sulphate, sodium, and magnesium. Bicarbonate ions are the main alkaline factor of water that provides the buffering capacity to acids. Decreased alkalinity without balancing other ions in water causes high corrosivity and decreased scaling tendencies.

The horizontal cold chamber die casting process can produce a wide range of near-net shape, non-ferrous castings with small dimensional variation, excellent surface finish and very complex geometries. However, top quality die castings can be achieved only when optimal performance of the cold chamber and plunger is maintained during the molten metal injection phase of the process. Cold chambers (shot sleeves) are known to deteriorate fast and sometimes fail catastrophically because of poor design. Catastrophic fracture and wear due to deformation are leading causes to degrade quality, increase downtime and thereby decrease productivity and profitability. Therefore, a systematic approach to minimize irregular and adverse conditions which prevent an intended injection profile, is highly desirable. To eliminate them, design criteria for shot sleeves were developed using analytical tools and available experimental data. The correlation between design and mechanical failures of shot sleeves was shown by the data obtained from the die casting industry. Also, the relationship between die casting process parameters and deterioration/ failure mechanisms were carefully evaluated.

Deep coal mines with strong roof and floor rock frequently encounter face and rib bursts. The burst problem is becoming more severe as mining depth increases, prompting efforts to relieve high stress areas ahead of mining. Successful stress relief reduces the occurrence of uncontrolled coal bursts. This report by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, presents a review of the most widely used methods to detect and destress high stress zones along coal faces. Stress-related burst problems and destressing efforts at a cooperating mine were investigated. Laboratory tests of the drilling yield method for high stress detection were conducted to determine the correlation between the volume of cuttings obtained and the magnitude of the applied stress at various confining pressures. A three- dimensional, multiple-seam computer modeling program, "MULSIM?, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of stress relief methods. Modeling results and guidelines for destressing are presented. Results indicate that dangerously high stress areas can be controlled by either proper planning or destressing. Proper mine planning guidelines and destressing methods such as volley firing, hydraulic fracturing, and auger drilling are discussed.

It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area. Rockbursts and rockfalls cause very large safety and productivity losses in underground mines. One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical rock support in underground mining has been that of maintaining anchorage during dynamic rock loading conditions or seismic related occurrences. It is recognized that the large displacements and high strain rates in excavation walls and underground structures cannot be countered by increasing the strength of stiff rock-reinforcing systems but must be accommodated by introducing yieldability into the support elements. This paper introduces a low cost yieldable support system which provides viable solutions to dynamic support loading. Such system should not only provide a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improve mine safety and reduce losses.

A limpeza e a reoxidação de um aço SAE 1055 modificado foram avaliadas durante a sua produção em uma aciaria elétrica. Escória A no sistema óxido CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-CaF2 (CSMA-F) e escórias B e C no sistema óxido CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 (CSMA) foram analisadas. Duas amostras de aço foram coletadas em ambiente industrial: forno panela e barra laminada. ASPEX Explorer foi utilizado para obter informações sobre as inclusões, organizando-as por composição química, tamanho, densidade e tipo. FactSage v7.2 calculou as inclusões formadas durante a solidificação do aço, fração líquida e sólida das escórias e viscosidade da fração líquida. Após o refino secundário, o tipo mais comum de inclusão encontrada foram os aluminatos de cálcio. Na barra laminada, o espinélio foi o tipo de inclusão mais frequente, indicando um possível produto de reoxidação. Sua formação pode ser causada devido a interação com os materiais utilizados no distribuidor e molde. A redução da temperatura também favorece a formação de espinélios, como demonstrado pelo FactSage. As inclusões de espinélio foram analisadas pelo método Função de Densidade Populacional (PDF), que identificou que as corridas A1, A2, C1 e C2 apresentavam inclusões de espinélio formadas por reoxidação. Uso de escória no sistema CSMA é indicado já que eventos de reoxidação foram diminuídos nas corridas B1 e B2. No entanto, é necessária uma análise mais profunda dos materiais utilizados no distribuidor e molde para melhorar a limpeza do aço SAE 1055.

"The processing of nickel laterites has been a topic of major interest at CSIRO for almost twenty years. During this period CSIRO has collaborated with other researchers and industry in developing a better understanding of existing processes and been actively involved in testing/developing new beneficiation and process options for these ores. The current paper summarises the results of selected studies and highlights improvements that have been achieved. Key topics to be discussed include enhancements in the mineralogical characterisation, beneficiation approaches, improvements in the understanding and application of leaching technologies, the development of synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) for the recovery of nickel/cobalt from laterite leach liquors and the collaborative development of the Direct Nickel process. Future opportunities and key research questions will be briefly examined.INTRODUCTION Nickel laterite ores comprise a significant resource in Australia and according to United States Geological Survey data nearly a quarter of world reserves are located there (USGS, 2016). More specifically, around 95% of Australian nickel resources (laterite and sulfide) are located in Western Australia (Australian Government, 2017). Given the recent closure of Queensland Nickel, essentially all of Australian nickel production occurs in Western Australia and the primary producers of processed nickel products include Nickel West (Kwinana) with ~84,000 t saleable nickel metal in 2016 (BHP Billiton, 2017), Minara Resources (Murrin Murrin) with 46,700 t nickel metal produced in 2015 (Glencore Australia, 2017), and First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Ravensthorpe) who sold 25,882 t nickel as mixed hydroxide product in 2016 (First Quantum Minerals, 2017). The total sales of nickel from Western Australia in the 2015-16 financial year were 175,722 t. The study of nickel laterites at CSIRO recommenced at the time second generation High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) plants were being commissioned at Bulong, Cawse and Murrin Murrin in the late 1990’s. A combination of technical and engineering issues meant that the ramp-up times at these operations were slower than expected and the outcomes resulting from the attendant problems are well documented (e.g. Griffin & Becker, 2000; Reid & Barnett, 2002; O’Callaghan, 2003) while the issues faced at the BHP-Billiton-built Ravensthorpe plant have been addressed by the current owners of this project, First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Piper, 2012)."

Improvements in production of high-purity chromium metal by magnesium reduction of anhydrous chlorides and by hydrogen treatment of electrolytic chromium are reported. Hydrogen-treated chromium has been arc-melted, and the arc-melted material has been successfully forged, rolled, and swaged. The material also has been forged at liquid-air temperatures. X-ray and metallographic studies indicate the recrystallization temperature of rolled chromium sheet to be about 750° C. Preliminary investigation of hot-bending characteristics of rolled chromium sheet shows the minimum bending temperature to be about 325° C. The heat resistance of chromium has been investigated.
